Abstract:The development of transition-metal sulfides, such as nickel sulfides (e.g., Ni3S2), as catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction is one potential solution to environmental pollution and energy crisis. However, its limited utilization of visible light and high recombination ratio of photoinduced electron–hole pairs suppress its photocatalytic activity. The key issue in improving photocatalytic efficiency lies in fabricating a p–n heterojunction with efficient interfacial contact and broadband absorption. Here, we developed a method for fabricating an interlaced Ni3S2/MoS2 heterostructure with close interfacial contact. In our fabrication approach, a porous Ni3S2 scaffold is prepared by chemical vapor deposition and a hydrothermal method is used to prepare a Ni3S2/MoS2 photocatalyst with close interfacial contact. The numerous interfaces of the interlaced Ni3S2/MoS2 heterostructures promote effective electron–hole pair separation and facilitate electron transfer. Meanwhile, the hybrid Ni3S2/MoS2 nanostructures favor broadband absorption extending from 300 to 800 nm. As a result, the hybrid Ni3S2/MoS2 exhibits a remarkable rate of hydrogen evolution (540.75 μmol g−1 h−1), which is 5.71 and 3.89 times greater than those of pure Ni3S2 and MoS2, respectively, under otherwise identical conditions. The results of this work are significant for developing promising transition-metal sulfide heterostructures in the field of hydrogen evolution by photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:Integrating carbon nitride with graphene into a lateral heterojunction would avoid energy loss within the interlaminar space region on conventional composites. To date, its synthesis process is limited to the bottom-up method which lacks the targeting and homogeneity. Herein, we proposed a hydrogen-initiated chemical epitaxial growth strategy at a relatively low temperature for the fabrication of graphene/carbon nitride in-plane heterostructure. Theoretical and experimental analysis proved that methane via in situ generation from the hydrogenated decomposition of carbon nitride triggered the graphene growth along the active sites at the edges of confined spaces. With the enhanced electrical field from the deposited graphene (0.5%), the performances on selective photo-oxidation and photocatalytic water splitting were promoted by 5.5 and 3.7 times, respectively. Meanwhile, a 7720 μmol/h/g(graphene) hydrogen evolution rate was acquired without any cocatalysts. This study provides an top-down strategy to synthesize in-plane catalyst for the utilization of solar energy.
Constructing a ZnIn2S4 nanoparticle/MoS2-RGO nanosheet 0D/2D heterojunction for significantly enhanced visible-light photocatalytic H2 production

Abstract:A zero-dimensional (0D)/two-dimensional (2D) heterojunction has an excellent advantage of boosting the photo-generated carrier separation and obtaining enhanced photocatalytic activities. Here, a ZnIn2S4 nanoparticle/MoS2-RGO nanosheet 0D/2D heterojunction was prepared by a rapid and low temperature hydrothermal method. TEM characterization results reveal that ZnIn2S4 nanoparticles are uniformly dispersed on the surface of MoS2-RGO nanosheets, which can provide abundant active sites and shorten the charge-migration distance, while the MoS2-RGO nanosheet acts as a support to avoid the aggregation of 0D ZnIn2S4 nanoparticles and also serves as a low-cost cocatalyst for effective hydrogen evolution. Through optimizing the MoS2-RGO composition and content, the highest hydrogen evolution rate of 425.1 μmol g-1 h-1 was obtained over the ZnIn2S4/MoS2-RGO 0D/2D heterojunction photocatalyst under visible light irradiation (λ > 420 nm), which is about 34.6 times higher than that of pure ZnIn2S4. Efficient charge separation can be attributed to the significantly enhanced photocatalytic performance, which originates from the favorable properties of the ZnIn2S4/MoS2-RGO 0D/2D heterojunction. This study provides an effective method to improve the photocatalytic performance of the ZnIn2S4 photocatalyst based on the 0D/2D heterojunction.
Highly Efficient Noble-Metal-free NiS/rGO/Cd0.3Zn0.7S Nanorods in Visible-Light-driven H2 Evolution with Enhanced Surface Photoinduced Charge Transfer

Abstract:Effectively improving the separation efficiency of photoinduced carriers is of crucial importance for the design of photocatalysts with excellent hydrogen evolution activity. Herein, by combining CdZnS nanorods with rGO and further depositing NiS as cocatalysts, the separation and transfer of photoinduced carriers for CdZnS is significantly improved. Without using any noble metals as cocatalysts, the optimal NiS/0.5%rGO/Cd0.3Zn0.7S exhibits an outstanding H-2 evolution activity of 1058 mu mol h(-1) under visible light illumination, which is evidently better than that of pure CdZnS nanorods and most CdZnS-based photocatalysts reported previously. Our study indicates that the introduction of rGO can effectively assist the transfer of photoinduced electrons and evenly distributed NiS on the surface, as the active center for H-2 evolution reaction, can easily capture photoinduced electrons to participate in photocatalytic process. Thus, the synergistic effect of rGO and NiS is considered to be the main cause for the improved photocatalytic performance. This work could offer a facile and low-cost strategy for the construction of composite photocatalysts with high-efficiency hydrogen generation activity.
Efficient visible-light-driven H2 evolution induced by P-doped Cd1-xZnxS porous nano-spheres decorated with Ni2P and reduced graphene oxide

Abstract:Exploiting visible-light-responsive photocatalysts for highly-efficient water-splitting is a very promising way to achieve the renewable hydrogen energy. To this end, the rational manipulation on the composition and structure of semiconductor nanomaterials appears extremely necessary. Herein, we construct a unique hybrid consisting of P-doped CZ0.10S-0.5P porous nano-spheres coupled with Ni2P and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) cocatalysts (CZ0.10S-0.5P@Ni2P/rGO), which exhibits an outstanding performance for H2 evolution reaction (HER) under visible-light (λ > 420 nm) irradiation. Noticeably, the CZ0.10S-0.5P@2Ni2P/1.5rGO with 2 wt%-Ni2P and 1.5 wt%-rGO delivers an exceptional HER rate of 616.8 mmol∙h−1∙g−1 (the apparent quantum efficiency reaches 77.0% at 475 nm), outperforming that of Pt-loaded CZ0.10S-0.5P and the great majority of CdS-based composites reported previously. In addition, the CZ0.10S-0.5P@2Ni2P/1.5rGO composite also presents a steady H2 generation activity under prolonged irradiation. The superior photocatalytic property of CZ0.10S-0.5P@Ni2P/rGO could be associated with the abundant active sites provided by Ni2P, excellent visible-light absorption, and effective charge transfer and separation enabled by the Schottky junctions formed between CZ0.10S-0.5P and Ni2P/rGO. The findings indicated here could promote the design and manufacture of advanced semiconductor nanostructures for sustainable energy applications.

Abstract:With the increasing scarcity of resources, the search for green and available energy has become an urgent need. Among them, photocatalytic decomposition of water to hydrogen production has been widely studied. According to zeta potential and XRD characterization, NiCo2O4 and CuS were successfully reassembled by electrostatic self-assembly to construct S-scheme heterojunction induced by built-in electric site, which can accelerate the reaction. At the same time, under simulated visible light irradiation, the composite catalyst can rapidly decompose aqueous triethanolamine solution to produce hydrogen. The composite catalyst has high photocatalytic activity and shows a durable and efficient hydrogen generation effect. By studying the photogenerated carrier separation and transfer of the catalyst, the results show that the composite catalyst can accelerate the photogenerated carrier separation and transfer, so that it can participate in the photocatalytic reaction faster. It provides various insights into the construction of different heterojunctions in binary composite catalysts.

Abstract:In this work, unique γ-In2Se3 nanoparticles/α-In2Se3 nanosheets (In2Se3 NPS) homojunction was prepared to facilitate the transfer and separation of internal carriers, and then reduced graphene oxide (rGO) was introduced to enhance the photocatalytic activity of In2Se3 NPS by in-situ solvothermal method. The obtained In2Se3 NPS/rGO homo-heterojunctions exhibited 3.25 times higher H2 evolution rate (4497.24 μmol g−1 h−1) and good stability compared with pristine In2Se3 NPS, which was ascribed to efficient separation and migration of photogenerated electron-hole pairs, abundant active sites and reduced overpotential of H2 evolution over the above homo-heterojunction structure with strong interaction between rGO and In2Se3 NPS. This work provides a promising approach and new insight to fabricate homo-heterojunction photocatalyst with an excellent electronic structure toward photocatalytic water splitting.

Abstract:Inspired by natural photosynthesis, the Z-scheme photocatalyst is a promising approach to extend the absorption spectra of photocatalysts and reduce the recombination of photo-generated electrons and holes. However, the fabrication of well-structured efficient multi-component Z-scheme photocatalysts is still a big challenge. We report here a facile one-pot method to synthesize graphene-based Z-scheme photocatalysts. The one-pot method guarantees good distribution of well-structured individual components on thin-layered rGO sheets with excellent connections. With inactive WO3 nanorods and inactive β-In2S3 nanosheets attached to the surface of the rGO sheets, the synthesized In2S3/WO3/rGO tertiary nanocomposite shows excellent visible-light catalytic activity for hydrogen production at 1524 μmol g(-1) h(-1), demonstrating unambiguously the Z-scheme catalytic mechanism. To prevent cross-reactions and interferences, our strategy was to choose no more than one ionic precipitation reaction for the one-pot process, as unwanted cross-reactions could become inevitable if many cations and anions were present. This fabrication strategy should be applicable generally to synthesize other multiple-component nanocomposites, as demonstrated also by the preliminary results of the successful synthesis of the BiVO4/WO3/rGO nanocomposite (one ionic precipitation reaction and one hydrolysis reaction) and WO3/TiO2/rGO nanocomposite (two hydrolysis reactions).
In Situ Photochemical Fabrication of CdS/g-C3N4 Nanocomposites with High Performance for Hydrogen Evolution under Visible Light

Abstract:Stable photo catalysts with high performance for hydrogen evolution under visible light are important in the field of renewable energy. Herein, a hybrid composite of CdS/g-C3N4 with a tunable density of CdS was made through in situ photochemical deposition of CdS nanodots onto g-C3N4 nanosheets. The resulting material was much more active under visible light than CdS and g-C3N4 , not only for the photocatalytic evolution of H-2 in the presence of lactic acid but also for the photo electrochemical oxidation of water. The maximum rate of H-2 production was 2537 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which was 2-10 times higher than the reported values. Importantly, the present CdS/g-C3N4 material was very stable during continuous irradiation for 55 h. The enhanced activity and stability are attributed to precise regulation of the position of CdS on the g-C3N4 surface and the formation of a type II heterojunction, increasing visible light absorption, favoring band overlapping, and promoting charge separation for interfacial reactions. This study opens a new avenue for the in situ engineering of stable photo catalysts to produce rich and active heterointerfaces for H-2 and O-2 evolution.
Facile Urea-Assisted Precursor Pre-Treatment to Fabricate Porous G-C3n4 Nanosheets for Remarkably Enhanced Visible-Light-driven Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Hydrogen generation photocatalyzed by low-cost graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a fascinating and effective route to solve energy crisis, but is mainly limited by the few reactive sites, low carrier separation efficiency and mediocre visible-light utilization. In this work, these limitations were tackled through a facile eco-friendly precursor pretreatment by tuning bulk g-C3N4 into porous structure. This pretreatment restricted agglomeration in the subsequent condensation and created more porous channels for charge carrier transfer and more surface active sites for reaction. The modified g-C3N4 has larger surface area, broader visible-light response, enhanced electron migration capacity and prolonged lifetime of photogenerated carriers. These well-amended g-C3N4 nanosheets possess an average hydrogen evolution rate 5.7 times that of bulk g-C3N4. This work affords a facile, eco-friendly and scalable strategy to design or synthesize other porous materials.
Unique 1D Cd1-xZnxS@O-MoS2/NiOx Nanohybrids: Highly Efficient Visible-Light-Driven Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution Via Integrated Structural Regulation

Abstract:Development of noble-metal-free photocatalysts for highly efficient sunlight-driven water splitting is of great interest. Nevertheless, for the photocatalytic H-2 evolution reaction (HER), the integrated regulation study on morphology, electronic band structures, and surface active sites of catalyst is still minimal up to now. Herein, well-defined 1D Cd1-xZnxS@O-MoS2/NiOx hybrid nanostructures with enhanced activity and stability for photocatalytic HER are prepared. Interestingly, the band alignments, exposure of active sites, and interfacial charge separation of Cd1-xZnxS@O-MoS2/NiOx are optimized by tuning the Zn-doping content as well as the growth of defect-rich O-MoS2 layer and NiOx nanoparticles, which endow the hybrids with excellent HER performances. Specifically, the visible-light-driven (>420 nm) HER activity of Cd1-xZnxS@O-MoS2/NiOx with 15% Zn-doping and 0.2 wt% O-MoS2 (CZ(0.15)S-0.2M-NiOx) in lactic acid solution (66.08 mmol h(-1) g(-1)) is about 25 times that of Pt loaded CZ(0.15)S, which is further increased to 223.17 mmol h(-1) g(-1) when using Na2S/Na2SO3 as the sacrificial agent. Meanwhile, in Na2S/Na2SO3 solution, the CZ(0.15)S-0.2M-NiOx sample demonstrates an apparent quantum yield of 64.1% at 420 nm and a good stability for HER under long-time illumination. The results presented in this work can be valuable inspirations for the exploitation of advanced materials for energy-related applications.
Boosting hydrogen evolution under simulated sunlight via constructing close electron transfer interface between 1D CdxZn1-xS nanorod and 2D MoS2@MoOy nanosheet

Abstract:Designing an efficient non-noble metal photocatalyst, which utilizes solar energy, has great potential to produce clean energy hydrogen. The microstructural refinement of 1D Cd0.2Zn0.8S nanorod was induced by doping with 2D MoS2@MoOy layer during microwave hydrothermal treatment. The maximum H2 production rate of the composite prepared at optimum conditions was 186 mmol g−1 h−1, which increased by 34.8% compared with that of Cd0.2Zn0.8S (138 mmol g−1 h−1). The apparent quantum yields of the optimized composite were 10.3% and 15.6% at 365 and 420 nm, respectively. The tight S-scheme heterojunction contributed to the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs effectively, as confirmed by the characterization analysis of ·OH and ·O− 2 radicals, surface potential under illumination and darkness and in situ XPS spectra. Moreover, the active species of sulfur coordinated-Mo5+ as low-coordinate center promoted the dissociation of water and decreased the over potential of H2 production. Furthermore, the optimal composite showed excellent stable catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution, and the H2 production rate was 176.7 mmol g−1 h−1 after five cycles (95% of the first cycle). Overall, this work provides a promising strategy for improving the effectiveness of H2 production by preparing non-noble metal composite photocatalysts.

Abstract:The creation of junctions between 0D and 2D materials can be an efficient strategy to enhance charge separation for solar hydrogen production. In this study, a simple in situ growth method has been used to synthesize a series of 0D/2D Zn-Ag-In-S quantum dots/reduced graphene oxide (ZAIS QDs/RGO) heterojunctions. The developed heterojunctions were characterized for structural characteristics, morphology, and photocatalytic performance, while varying the content of RGO. We observed that photocatalytic hydrogen production reached a maximum at an RGO content of 30 μL (342.34 μmol g−1 h−1), surpassing that of pure ZAIS QDs (110.38 μmol g−1 h−1) by 3.1 times, while maintaining excellent stability. To understand this enhancement, we performed time-resolved fluorescence and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The fluorescence lifetime of RGO loaded at 30 μL (417.76 ns) was significantly higher than that of pure ZAIS QDs (294.10 ns) and had the fastest charge transfer, which can be attributed to the charge transfer and storage capacity of RGO to extend the lifetime of photogenerated carriers and improve the charge separation efficiency. This study offers a simple synthesis method for constructing 0D/2D QDs/RGO heterojunction structures and provides a valuable reference for further enhancing the activity and stability of I-III-VI sulfide QDs.

Abstract:Herein, a novel ZnCo2O4/ZnIn2S4 composite was prepared through a novel one-pot refluxing wet chemistry process successfully. The phase structure, micro morphology and optical properties of photocatalyst were analyzed through XRD, SEM, XPS and UV-vis spectroscopy. The photocatalysis of the prepared specimens were assessed by the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution with visible-light (λ > 420 nm). Consequently, the ZnCo2O4/ZnIn2S4 photocatalyst displayed better photocatalysis than the original constituents for hydrogen evolution. Moreover, the corresponding maximized hydrogen production rate of ZnCo2O4/ZnIn2S4 composite loaded with 15% ZnCo2O4 was 3713.4 μmol · h−1 · g−1, which registered approximately 10.2 folds higher than pristine ZnIn2S4. Moreover, the ZnCo2O4/ZnIn2S4 composite manifested superior stability during the photocatalytic reactions. In addition, the underlying mechanism for the outstanding performance of hydrogen production was revealed as well. This research offers inspiration for the rational creation of high-efficiency photocatalytic agents for hydrogen evolution.
Constructing a Strong Interfacial Interaction in a Rh/RGO Catalyst to Boost Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution under Visible Light Irradiation

Abstract:Herein, we implanted the Rh2O3 nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) by a hydrothermal reaction. After sensitized by Eosin Y, the Rh2O3 transferred into metal Rh to construct a strong interaction interface between Rh NPs and RGO. The fabricated Rh/RGO catalyst exhibited high performance for photocatalytic H2 evolution under visible light irradiation. About 98.1 mmol·g–1·h–1 H2 evolution rate was achieved with a maximum apparent quantum efficiency of 79.3% at 520 nm, which was superior to that of Rh (13.9 mmol·g–1·h–1) and Rh mixed with RGO (32.7 mmol·g–1·h–1) catalysts. The enhanced H2 evolution performance was attributed to the excellent electron conduction ability of RGO and the strong interaction between Rh NPs and RGO, which could accelerate the electron transfer and prolong the charge lifetime. In addition, the strong interaction could ensure the strong anchoring to maintain the excellent stability of the Rh/RGO catalyst. Our work will provide an avenue to design high-performance catalysts by fabricating a strong interfacial interaction strategy for photocatalytic H2 evolution.

Nonetheless, developing earth-abundant and visible-light-responsive photocatalysts for efficient H2 production still remains a huge challenge. In this work, unique two-dimensional hierarchitectures of S-deficient CdS integrated with ultrafine CoP nanocrystals embedding in graphitic N-doped C (CoP-CN) nanosheets are fabricated for the first time. Noticeably, the graphitic CN electron mediator not only enhances the photocatalytic stability of CdS/CoP-CN composites by protecting CoP from external corrosion but also induces the formation of an ohmic junction to boost electron extraction from CdS to CoP efficiently. Meanwhile, the S vacancies in CdS serve as electron traps to further enhance the separation of photogenerated carriers. Such unique CdS/CoP-CN hierarchical hybrid nanosheets exhibited an extraordinary visible-light-induced (λ > 400 nm) photocatalytic H2-evolving performance, delivering a high apparent quantum yield (26.3% at 420 nm) and an excellent H2 generation rate of 54.01 mmol·g–1·h–1, much superior to those of a CdS/CoP Schottky junction, Pt-loaded CdS, and a vast amount of CdS-based photocatalysts ever reported. In addition, the outstanding H2-evolving durability of CdS/CoP-CN composites was verified by cycling and long-term photocatalytic tests. The findings presented here are anticipated to enlighten the rational design and synthesis of highly active photocatalysts with an ohmic junction for application in energy and environment-related domains.

Consciously Constructing the Robust NiS/g-C3N4 Hybrids for Enhanced Photocatalytic Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:Selective growth of cocatalyst on the surface of photocatalyst has been attracted considerable attention due to their efficient charges transfer property. In this study, the robust NiS modified graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) hybrids were successfully synthesized by a facile surface photochemical deposition process. The structure and composition characterization results revealed that the NiS is highly dispersed loading on the surface of g-C3N4 nanosheets, and the NiS/g-C3N4 hybrids possess large surface areas and excellent optical properties. Under the visible light illumination, the NiS/g-C3N4 hybrids with 1.0% weight content of NiS cocatalyst exhibits the highest hydrogen evolution rate of 1346.1 μmol h−1 g−1 with an apparent quantum efficiency (AQE) of 7.67%. On the basis of photoluminescence (PL) spectra and photoelectrochemical methodology, the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution mechanism was proposed. The results demonstrated that the excellent activity arises from the strong electronic coupling, highly efficient charges separation and migration. This work demonstrates a facile photochemical deposition method to consciously construct the robust two-dimensional (2D) hybrids, so as to realize accurate deposition of cocatalyst and efficient migration of photo-generated carriers.

Abstract:Slow charge transfer and carrier recombination are key issues in photocatalytic reactions. The current solution is to load small-sized cocatalysts onto large-sized photocatalysts. Here a new strategy is proposed. Small-sized photocatalysts of cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanosheets are grown onto large-sized cocatalysts of N-doped amorphous carbon (a-CN) to construct CdS @ a-CN photocatalysts. Photoluminescence spectra and transient photocurrent demonstrate that optimized CdS @ a-CN shows effective charge separation compared with CdS. The corresponding photocatalytic H2 yield of optimized CdS @ a-CN is ∼244 μmol, which is 3.6 times higher than that of CdS. Besides, the hydrogen yield for CdS under visible-light irradiation is significantly improved from ∼44 μmol to ∼217 μmol for the optimized CdS @ a-CN. Our design strategy provides an effective way to construct photocatalytic systems with outstanding photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Using natural light energy to convert water into hydrogen is of great significance to solving energy shortages and environmental pollution. Due to the rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers after separation, the efficiency of photocatalytic hydrogen production using photocatalysts is usually very low. Here, efficient CdZnS nanoparticles@Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheet heterojunction photocatalysts have been successfully prepared by a facile in situ growth strategy. Since the CdZnS nanoparticles uniformly covered the Ti3C2Tx Mxene nanosheets, the agglomeration phenomenon of CdZnS nanoparticles could be effectively inhibited, accompanied by increased Schottky barrier sites and an enhanced migration rate of photogenerated carriers. The utilization efficiency of light energy can be improved by inhibiting the recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. As a result, under the visible-light-driven photocatalytic experiments, this composite achieved a high hydrogen evolution rate of 47.1 mmol h−1 g−1, which is much higher than pristine CdZnS and Mxene. The boosted photocatalytic performances can be attributed to the formed heterojunction of CdZnS nanoparticles and Ti3C2Tx MXene nanosheets, as well as the weakened agglomeration effects.

Abstract:Noble metal free MoS2/g-C3N4 catalyst has attracted intense attentions for visible light photocatalytic hydrogen evolution as a result of its earth abundance, low cost and unique heterojunctions stacked with two dimensional sheets. However, the low charge separation efficiency resulted from the poor conductivity of g-C3N4 and MoS2, and lack of abundant active sites from coordinative unsaturated atoms in MoS2, restricts the photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity and stability enhancement of MoS2/C3N4 composite catalysts. Herein, CoMoS2/rGO/g-C3N4 catalysts with ternary heterojunctions are prepared by facile solvothermal method, which exhibit high visible light photocatalytic activity and stability for hydrogen evolution. The optimal hydrogen evolution rate of CoMoS2/rGO/g-C3N4 catalysts is 684 mu mol g(-1) h(-1) when the content of CoMoS2 is 2% and the content of rGO is 0.5%. The stability of CoMoS2/rGO/C3N4 catalysts just decrease about 3% after 4 cycling runs for 16 h. The good catalytic performances of catalysts are attributed to the synergistic effect among the g-C3N4 nanosheets, rGO nanosheets and CoMoS2 nanosheets. The high conductivity of rGO nanosheets enhances the electron-hole separation and charge transfer, and Co doping increases the active sites for hydrogen evolution due to the increase of unsaturated atoms in CoMoS2 nanosheets.
