Abstract:Background Due to language limitations, little is known about the reporting quality of randomized clinical trials (RCTs) on the treatment of coronary heart disease (CHD) with traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) in Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine (CJITWM). Objective In this study, we utilized the CONSORT 2010 statement to understand the reporting quality of RCTs on CHD with TCM from the CJITWM. Methods The China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) electronic database was searched for CJITWM RCTs on the treatment of CHD with TCM, published between Janurary 1, 2006 and December 31, 2011. We excluded articles reported as “animal studies,” “topic review,” “diagnostic test,” “editorials,” or “others.” The CONSORT checklist was applied to evaluate the reporting quality of all eligible articles by two independent authors after extensive discussion. Each item was graded as either “yes” or “no” depending on whether the authors had reported it or not. Results We identified 21 articles meeting our inclusion criteria. The percentage of 11 of the 37 items was 4.8∼95.2%, 14 of the 37 items were reported in all included articles, while 12 items were not mentioned at all. The average reporting percentage for the “title and abstract” section was 52.4%, for the “introduction” section 100.0%, for the “methods” section 45.4%, for the “results” section 57.1%, for the “discussion” section 79.4%, and for the “other information” section 17.5%. Conclusion In general, the reviewed RCTs were not consistent with the CONSORT 2010 statement. Authors should adhere to the CONSORT statement in reporting RCTs; editorial departments may consider the CONSORT statement as a guideline and should instruct authors to write manuscripts, and reviewers to judge them according to CONSORT statutes.

Abstract:Background: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) affects the quality of patients' life in many ways. The aim of this study was to develop and validate a mainland Chinese version of IBD quality-of-life questionnaire for ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD).Methods: A draft questionnaire containing 30 items was generated from a descriptive qualitative study, literature review and consulting with IBD patients and experts. The validity, discriminant ability, reliability, and sensitivity to change were validated in 336 patients with IBD.Results: A 22-item IBD quality-of-life questionnaire (IBDQOL-22) with 4 domains was developed. The 4 domain scores of the IBDQOL-22 correlated well with the related SF-36 (36-Item Short Form Health Survey) dimensional scores in UC (r = 0.42-0.75) and CD (r = 0.41-0.66). The total scores of the IBDQOL-22 correlated well with the physical component summary scores of the SF-36 in UC (r = 0.74) and CD (r = 0.74), the mental component summary scores of the SF-36 in UC (r = 0.77) and CD (r = 0.71), the colitis activity index in UC (r = 20.61) and the CD activity index (r = 20.53). It was able to discriminate between patients with active and inactive disease. Cronbach's alpha for the 4 domains of the IBDQOL-22 ranged from 0.77 to 0.90 in UC and from 0.76 to 0.89 in CD. Test-retest reliability was excellent (intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.88-0.95 in UC and 0.72-0.90 in CD). The 3 domains of the IBDQOL-22 (emotional function, symptoms and discomfort, bowel symptoms and its influences) were able to detect changes in patients whose clinical activity index changed more than one point.Conclusions: The IBDQOL-22 is a valid, reliable, and responsive instrument for assessing disease-specific quality-of-life in patients with IBD in Mainland China.

Abstract:With the successive release of the CONSORT extensions for acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, and Tuina/massage, this review aims to assess the reporting characteristics and quality of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) based on these specific guidelines. A comprehensive review was conducted by searching multiple databases, including Embase, Ovid MEDLINE(R), All EBM Reviews, AMED, CNKI, VIP Chinese Medical Journal Database, and Wanfang Data, for publications from January 1 to December 31, 2022. Two reviewers independently evaluated the eligibility of the records, extracted predetermined information, and assessed the reporting based on the STRICTA, STRICTOM, STRICTOC, and STRICTOTM checklists. Among the included 387 studies (acupuncture, 213; Tuina/massage, 85; moxibustion, 73; cupping, 16), the overall reporting compliance averaged 56.0%, with acupuncture leading at 62.6%, followed by cupping (60.2%), moxibustion (53.1%), and Tuina/massage (47.9%). About half of the evaluated items showed poor reporting (compliance rate < 65%). Notably, international journals demonstrated significantly higher reporting quality than Chinese journals (P < 0.05). Although acupuncture trials had relatively higher compliance rates, deficiencies persist in reporting non-pharmacological therapies of Chinese medicine, particularly in areas like treatment environment details and provider background information.
Evaluation of Early and Midterm Results of Offpump Coronary Artery Bypass in Patients with Left Main Disease

Abstract:Abstract Purpose: This study evaluated the early and midterm results of offpump coronary artery bypass (OPCAB) for left main coronary artery (LMCA) stenosis. Methods: Patients treated between November 2001 and December 2006, during which isolated coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) was performed without cardiopulmonary bypass in principle, were included. Isolated CABG was performed in 206 patients, of whom 62 (30.1%) had LMCA stenosis >50%. Results: The in‐hospital mortality rate (LMCA stenosis > 50%, 1.6%; LMCA stenosis ≦50%, 0.7%, p = 0.512), the incidence of postoperative complications, and the midterm survival rate (LMCA stenosis≻50%, 86.7 ± 5.2%/5 years, LMCA stenosis≦50%, 89.6 ± 3.8%/5 years, p = 0.21) did not significantly differ between the two groups. Conversion was significantly frequent in patients with LMCA stenosis >75% and severe stenosis >90% in the right coronary artery (RCA) trunk. Conclusions: Patients with LMCA stenosis can undergo OPCAB safely and the midterm results are good. As conversion was significantly frequent in patients with severe LMCA and RCA trunk stenosis, adequate preparation for pump application is necessary.
Impact of the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) checklist on reporting of randomized clinical trials in traditional Chinese medicine

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To examine the reporting characteristics and key methodological factors of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in the field of traditional Chinese medicine and assess whether use of the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) statement is associated with improvement in the quality of reports of RCTs.METHOD: RCTs published in two major traditional Chinese medicine journals were retrieved and were systematically reviewed. Of those journals, one adopted the CONSORT statement (Journal of Chinese Integrative Medicine (JCIM)) and one did not (Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine (CJIM)). Items within the CONSORT 2001 and the CONSORT 2010 statements were taken to develop a 63-item coding manual. The Jadad scale was also used to assess methodological quality of RCTs. Two observers assessed the reporting of reports and extracted data independently. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. SPSS was used for all analyses.RESULTS: A total of 76 RCTs were included for the analysis (38 from JCIM and 38 from CJIM). Significant improvements both in the overall quality of reporting (CONSORT score) and reporting of methodological items (Jadad scale) over time were observed in adopter journal (JCIM) (P = 0.001). Overall CONSORT score of studies published during 2010 to 2011 (post-CONSORT) increased 15.30 averagely with 95%CI 8.34 to 22.26 (P = 0.001). Of those, items addressed on reporting of methodological quality were different significantly too. JCIM had more 1.30 items addressed than CJIM in average (95% CI 0.52 to 2.08, P = 0.003). In the multivariate analysis regression, the page length and CONSORT-promoting status have statistically significant associated with the (P = 0.001 and P = 0.040, respectively).CONCLUSION: Although a large room needs to improve the reporting of randomized clinical trials in traditional Chinese medicine, the impact for improvement of reporting of TCM RCTs has been proven in some extent.

Abstract:Background While Integrated Chinese and Western Medicine (ICWM) has become widely accepted as a necessary intervention for treating various diseases, key information about ICWM interventions is often missing in published clinical trials. To facilitate complete, transparent, and consistent reporting of clinical trials with ICWM interventions, an extension of the CONSORT guideline is necessary to be developed: the CONSORT-ICWM guideline. Methods The CONSORT-ICWM guideline will be developed in five stages in accordance with recommendations for the development of reporting guidelines from the EQUATOR (Enhancing the QUAlity and Transparency Of health Research) Network, including (1) project launch and registration; (2) literature review and checklist draft; (3) Delphi survey; (4) consensus meeting; and (5) finalization of the guideline. Additionally, the working group will be composed of professors with expertise in integrated medicines, traditional Chinese medicines, biomedical informatics, statistics, methodology, development of reporting guidelines, epidemiology, health economics, and paper publications. Discussion The CONSORT-ICWM guideline is to improve the reporting quality of clinical trials with ICWM interventions by ensuring the reports are complete, informative, clear, and transparent.

Abstract:Introduction: Moxibustion is clinically used for treating various chronic diseases; however, the reporting quality of current published RCTs of moxibustion is unclear. The objective of this study was to assess the reporting quality of RCTs focusing on moxibustion as a treatment for chronic diseases. Methods: Seven databases were searched to identify relevant RCTs. Criteria for evaluating the reporting quality of standard RCT elements and moxibustion intervention-related information were developed based on the CONSORT statement and its STRICTOM extension, respectively. Multivariate regression models were used to investigate factors impacting reporting quality. Results: A total of 310 RCTs were included, with 41 (7.6%) published in English journals and 269 (92.4%) in Chinese journals. The median CONSORT and STRICTOM scores of these RCTs, with a maximum score of 100, were 41.2 and 62.9, respectively. RCTs with a later publication year and protocol registration or ethical approval exhibited significantly higher CONSORT and STRICTOM scores. Higher CONSORT scores were also significantly associated with English language publication, funding support, and inclusion of a safety evaluation, while higher STRICTOM scores were additionally associated with an active control design. Conclusion: The reporting quality of RCTs focusing on moxibustion treatment for chronic diseases is subpar, with gradual but limited improvement over the last 25 years. To enhance the reporting quality of moxibustion RCTs, researchers should develop a comprehensive study protocol and standardize result reporting based on CONSORT and STRICTOM statements. Registration platforms, ethical approval organizations, funders, and journals can also contribute to this improvement by bolstering structured information reporting in the review process.

Abstract:Objectives: The impact of the Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials of Traditional Chinese Medicine (SPIRIT-TCM) Extension 2018 statement on the reporting quality of randomized controlled trial (RCT) protocols in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is not clear. This review aimed to assess the reporting characteristics and quality of RCT protocols involving interventions such as Chinese herbal medicine formulas (CHMF), acupuncture, and moxibustion published in the last 3 years. Methods: We conducted an extensive search among multiple databases, including All EBM Reviews, Allied and Complementary Medicine (AMED), Embase, Ovid MEDLINE(R), PubMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar, and ClinicalTrials.gov for publications in English from 1 January 2020 to 10 August 2023. Two reviewers independently assessed the eligibility of the publications, extracted predetermined information, and evaluated the reporting based on the SPIRIT-TCM Extension 2018 checklist. Results: Of the 420 eligible protocols (comprising 163 studies on CHMF, 239 on acupuncture, and 18 on moxibustion), the average reporting compliance rate was only 35.4%. Approximately half of the assessed items fell into the category of poorly reported, demonstrating a compliance rate below 65%. Notably, reporting compliance in acupuncture and moxibustion interventional studies exhibited higher scores than compliance in CHMF studies. Conclusion: Continued, concerted, and coordinated efforts are required by journals, editors, reviewers, and investigators to improve the application and promotion of the SPIRIT-TCM Extension 2018 reporting guideline.

Reporting Quality of Randomized Controlled Trials for the Treatment of Eczema with Chinese Patent Medicine Based on the CONSORT-CHM Formulas 2017

Abstract:Objective . Chinese patent medicine (CPM) has been widely used to treat eczema in mainland China for decades. This study aims to investigate circulating CPM for eczema in mainland China and to evaluate the reporting quality of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of them by using the CONSORT-CHM formulas 2017 (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials for Chinese herbal medicine formulas 2017). Methods . Circulating CPM with the indication for eczema was selected by searching three drug databases and confirmed by contacting the manufacturers. RCTs for the treatment of eczema with CPM were selected in four Chinese literature databases and four English literature databases from their inception to August 31, 2019. The reporting quality of included RCTs was assessed based on the CONSORT-CHM formulas 2017. A univariate analysis was conducted to identify the factors associated with the reporting quality. Results . A total of 70 circulating CPMs had the indication for eczema. Among them, 21 CPMs with 144 RCTs reached the eligible criteria. The mean overall quality score (OQS) of 144 RCTs was 19.85 ± 2.73, which was much less than the maximum score of 38. Of the 38 items, 12 items were reported in over 70% of the trials, 6 items were reported in 50%–70% of the trials, and 16 items were reported in less than 50% of the trials. Publication after 2015 ( P < 0.001 ) and the first author from a university hospital ( P = 0.010 ) were associated with the better reporting quality. Conclusion . There are a lot of circulating CPMs with the indication for eczema in mainland China, but both the quantity and the reporting quality of RCTs regarding those CPMs are suboptimal. It is necessary that authors and journal editors learn and adhere to the CONSORT-CHM formulas 2017 to enhance the reporting quality of RCTs for the treatment of eczema with CPM.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: This study aimed to access the efficacy and safety of integrated Traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment for patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) combined diabetes.METHODS: This protocol adheres to the preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analysis protocol statement. We plan to search 8 electronic databases to identify qualifying studies published from database inception until December 1, 2020. The software of EndNote reference manager (X9) will be used to study selection. A pre-developed standardized data collection form will be used to extract from all eligible studies. For included studies, the quality will be assessed by Cochrane Risk of bias tool. The RevMan 5.3 software (Copenhagen: The Nordic Cochrane Centre, The Cochrane Collaboration, 2014) developed by the Cochrane Collaboration will be used for all statistical analysis. If possible, meta-analysis will be undertaken for each of the outcomes. For continuous variable data, we will used mean differences with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) as summary statistics. For dichotomous variable data, we will calculate Mantel-Haenszel odds ratio with 95% CIs as summary statistics from the numbers of events in control and intervention groups. We will consider a result to be statistically significant if P < .05. If outcomes cannot be meta-analyzed, we will performer a descriptive analysis.RESULTS: This study will be performed to test the efficacy and safety of integrated Traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment for patients with UC combined diabetes.CONCLUSION: The results of our study will be published in a peer-reviewed journals, and we will promotion results in domestic and foreign conferences.REGISTRATION NUMBER: INPLASY2020120087.ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: As a systematic review and meta-analysis which based on previously published literature, ethical approval, and informed consent from patients are not required.

Abstract:Placebo-controlled randomized trials are often used to evaluate the absolute effect of new treatments and are considered gold standard for clinical trials. No studies, however, have yet been conducted evaluating the reporting quality of placebo-controlled randomized trials. The current study aims to assess the reporting quality of placebo-controlled randomized trials on treatment of diabetes with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in Mainland China and to provide recommendations for improvements.China National Knowledge Infrastructure database, Wanfang database, China Biology Medicine database, and VIP database were searched for placebo-controlled randomized trials on treatment of diabetes with TCM. Review, animal experiment, and randomized controlled trials without placebo control were excluded. According to Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) 2010 checklists items, each item was given a yes or no depending on whether it was reported or not.A total of 68 articles were included. The reporting percentage in each article ranged from 24.3% to 73%, and 30.9% articles reported more than 50% of the items. Seven of the 37 items were reported more than 90% of the items, whereas 7 items were not mentioned at all. The average reporting for "title and abstract," "introduction," "methods," "results," "discussion," and "other information" was 43.4%, 78.7%, 40.1%, 49.9%, 71.1%, and 17.2%, respectively. The percentage of each section had increased after 2010. In addition, the reporting of multiple study centers, funding, placebo species, informed consent forms, and ethical approvals were 14.7%, 50%, 36.85%, 33.8%, and 4.4%, respectively.Although a scoring system was created according to the CONSORT 2010 checklist, it was not designed as an assessment tool. According to CONSORT 2010, the reporting quality of placebo-controlled randomized trials on the treatment of diabetes with TCM improved after 2010. Future improvements, however, are still needed, particularly in methods sections.
Chinese herbal medicines in the treatment of ulcerative colitis: a review

Abstract:Abstract Objective To investigate how the ulcerative colitis (UC) be treated with Chinese herbal medicines (CHM), using Chinese medicine (CM) pattern ( zheng ) identification, in the current clinical practice. Methods A total of 7 electronic databases were systematically searched for UC clinical studies with CHM interventions (including single herbs and CHM formulas) published in English and Chinese from the date of their inception to November 25, 2020. Descriptive statistics were adopted to demonstrate the characteristics of study design, and to collate the commonly CM patterns of UC and frequently used CHM herbs and formulas. Further, IBM SPSS Modeler 18.0 and Cytoscape 3.7.1 software were used to analyze and visualize the associations between different categories of CHM and their zheng indications. Results A total of 2311 articles were included in this study, of which most (> 90%) were RCTs with CHM formulas. The most common zheng of UC was Large intestine dampness-heat , while the basic type of CM patten was Spleen deficiency . The most frequently used classical formula was Bai-Tou-Weng-Tang , followed by Shen-Ling-Bai-Zhu-San , and the commonly used proprietary CHM was Xi-Lei-San (enema). Sulfasalazine and Mesalazine are commonly used as concomitant western medicines. The most frequently used single medicinals were Huang Lian and Bai Zhu , which also identified as the core herbs for different CM patterns. Conclusion This study examined the application of CHM interventions for UC and summarized their characteristics in clinical practice. These data indicated there were limited information about the safety assessment of CHM formulas and further RCTs including CM pattern(s) with strict design are necessary.

The overall CONSORT and its CHM formula extension scores were calculated and expressed as proportions separately. We also analyzed the pre-specified study characteristics and performed exploratory regressions to determine their associations with the reporting quality. Results: Seventy-two RCTs were included. Overall reporting quality (mean adherence) were 53.56% and 45.71% on the CONSORT statement and its CHM formula extension, respectively. The strongest associations with reporting quality based on the CONSORT statement were multiple centers and larger author numbers. Compliance with the CHM formula extension, particularly regarding the disclosure of the targeted traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) pattern (s), was generally insufficient. Conclusion: The reporting quality of RCTs in CHM formulas for diabetes remains unsatisfactory, and the adherence to the CHM formula extension is even poorer. In order to ensure transparent and standardized reporting of RCTs, it is essential to advocate for or even mandate adherence of the CONSORT statement and its CHM formula extension when reporting trials in CHM formulas for diabetes by both authors and editors.

Reporting quality and risk of bias of randomized controlled trials of Chinese herbal medicine for multiple sclerosis

Abstract:Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common non-traumatic disabling disease affecting young adults. A definitive curative treatment is currently unavailable. Many randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have reported the efficacy of Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) on MS. Because of the uncertain quality of these RCTs, the recommendations for routine use of CHM for MS remain inconclusive. The comprehensive evaluation of the quality of RCTs of CHM for MS is urgent. Methods: Nine databases, namely, PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, EBSCO, Sinomed, Wanfang Database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and VIP Database, were searched from inception to September 2023. RCTs comparing CHM with placebo or pharmacological interventions for MS were considered eligible. The Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) and its extension for CHM formulas (CONSORT-CHM Formulas) checklists were used to evaluate the reporting quality of RCTs. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. The selection criteria of high-frequency herbs for MS were those with cumulative frequency over 50% among the top-ranked herbs. Results: A total of 25 RCTs were included. In the included RCTs, 33% of the CONSORT items and 21% of the CONSORT-CHM Formulas items were reported. Eligibility title, sample size calculation, allocation concealment, randomized implementation, and blinded description in CONSORT core items were reported by less than 5% of trials. For the CONSORT-CHM Formulas, the source and authentication method of each CHM ingredient was particularly poorly reported. Most studies classified the risk of bias as "unclear" due to insufficient information. The top five most frequently used herbs were, in order, Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, Radix Rehmanniae Recens, Herba Epimedii, Scorpio, and Poria. No serious adverse effect had been reported. Conclusions: The low reporting of CONSORT items and the unclear risk of bias indicate the inadequate quality of RCTs in terms of reporting completeness and result validity. The CONSORT-CHM Formulas appropriately consider the unique characteristics of CHM, including principles, formulas, and Chinese medicinal substances. To improve the quality of RCTs on CHM for MS, researchers should adhere more closely to CONSORT-CHM Formulas guidelines and ensure comprehensive disclosure of all study design elements.
An evidence mapping of systematic reviews and meta-analysis on traditional Chinese medicine for ulcerative colitis

Abstract:Background: Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been a proposed treatment option for ulcerative colitis (UC), however it has been difficult to understand the breadth and depth of evidence as various Chinese medicine therapies may produce effects differently. The aim of this evidence mapping is to visually understand the available evidence in the use of TCM in the treatment of UC, and to identify gaps in evidence to inform priorities of future research. Methods: A systematic electronic literature search of six databases were performed to identify systematic reviews (SRs) on different Chinese medicine therapies in the treatment in UC. Methodological quality of the included SRs was assessed using AMSTAR 2. Results: The mapping was based on 73 SRs, which included nine interventions that met eligibility criteria. The quality of the included SRs was very low. The diseases stages of patients with UC varied greatly, from active to remission, to non-acute outbreak, to not reported. The results mostly favored the method of intervention. Oral administration combined with enema was the most widely used route of administration in secondary research. Conclusion: Based on the current evidence, the treatment of UC with TCM can only be recommended cautiously. A majority of included SRs did not report the location of the disease, the disease classification, and the route of administration of the intervention. Further research is needed on the effectiveness of Chinese medicine alone in the treatment of UC. The effectiveness of combined Chinese and conventional medicine combined with different routes of administration cannot be confirmed. Attention should be paid to the methodological quality of the systematic review. Unifies the outcome indicators used in the evaluation of effectiveness.

Abstract:BACKGROUND:The incidence of ulcerative colitis (UC) is increasing year by year worldwide, and it is listed as one of the refractory diseases by World Health Organization. In addition to typical intestinal manifestations such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, mucus, pus, and bloody stool, it can also accompany multiorgan and multisystem extraintestinal manifestations, seriously affecting the life and work of patients. Furthermore, UC patients with a tremendous psychological pressure and affects their physical and mental health. In recent years, many complementary and alternative therapies have been used for treatment of UC, but only pair-wised drugs have been evaluated in the traditional meta-analyses and some results are inconsistent. Consequently, it is essential to propose a protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis to discuss the efficacy and safety of complementary and alternative therapies in the treatment of UC.METHODS:We will search Chinese and English databases comprehensively and systematically from the establishment of databases to May 2020, free of language or publication restrictions. All randomized controlled trials on complementary and alternative therapies for UC will be included. Two researchers will independently screen titles, abstracts, full texts, and extract data, then assess the bias risk of each study. We will conduct pairwise meta-analyses and Bayesian network meta-analyses to the relative outcomes of the efficacy and safety. Data analysis will use STATA and WinBUGs 1.4.3 software in this meta-analysis.RESULTS:This study will evaluate the efficacy and safety of complementary and alternative therapies for UC based on changes in symptoms, clinical efficacy, quality of life and adverse events.CONCLUSION:This study will provide evidence for whether complementary and alternative therapies are beneficial to the treatment of UC. Abstract:ObjectiveTo evaluate the completeness of reporting of acupuncture interventions in trials for functional constipation (FC) following the STandards for Reporting Interventions in Clinical Trials of Acupuncture (STRICTA) guidelines.MethodsWe searched eight databases for all published trials, including clinical trials, pilot/feasibility studies, observational studies, and case studies, for acupuncture in patients with FC up to June 31, 2021. The completeness of reporting was evaluated using the STRICTA guidelines.ResultsFinally, 99 studies were included and analysed based on the latest STRICTA guidelines. Out of the 17 analysed STRICTA sub-items, only five were found to be appropriately reported in more than 90% of the trials, while five were completely reported in less than 30%.ConclusionsThe reporting completeness of acupuncture trials for FC in accordance with STRICTA guidelines is moderate, with poor guideline adherence for several items. Clinical trial reports should be further improved in accordance with STRICTA guidelines to enhance the completeness of evidence. There is also a need to explore the underlying reasons as to why the authors did not report these items and to develop strategies for improving guideline compliance.

Abstract:Abstract Objective To assess the reporting quality of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of massage, particularly whether necessary elements related to massage interventions were adequately reported. Methods A total of 8 electronic databases were systematically searched for massage RCTs published in English and Chinese from the date of their inception to June 22, 2020. Quality assessment was performed using three instruments, namely the CONSORT (Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials) 2010 Checklist (37 items), the CONSORT Extension for NPT (Nonpharmacologic Treatments) 2017 checklist (18 items), and a self-designed massage-specific checklist (16 items) which included massage rationale, intervention and control group details. Descriptive statistics were additionally used to analyse the baseline characteristics of included trials. Results A total of 2,447 massage RCTs were identified, of which most (96.8%) were distributed in China. For the completeness of CONSORT, NPT Extension, and massage-specific checklists, the average reporting percentages were 50%, 10% and 45%, respectively. Of 68 assessed items in total (exclusion of 3 repeated items on intervention), 42 were poorly presented, including 18 CONSORT items, 15 NPT items, and 9 massage-specific items. Although the overall quality of reporting showed slightly improvement in articles published after 2010, the international (English) journals presented a higher score of the CONSORT and NPT items, while the Chinese journals were associated with the increased score of massage-specific items. Conclusion The quality of reporting of published massage RCTs is variable and in need of improvement. Reporting guideline “CONSORT extension for massage” should be developed.
