Abstract:The rapid evolution of neuromodulation techniques includes an increasing amount of research into stimulation paradigms that are guided by patients' neurophysiology, to increase efficacy and responder rates. Treatment personalisation and target engagement have shown to be effective in fields such as Parkinson's disease, and closed-loop paradigms have been successfully implemented in cardiac defibrillators. Promising avenues are being explored for physiologically informed neuromodulation in psychiatry. Matching the stimulation frequency to individual brain rhythms has shown some promise in transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Matching the phase of those rhythms may further enhance neuroplasticity, for instance when combining TMS with electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings. Resting-state EEG and event-related potentials may be useful to demonstrate connectivity between stimulation sites and connected areas. These techniques are available today to the psychiatrist to diagnose underlying sleep disorders, epilepsy, or lesions as contributing factors to the cause of depression. These technologies may also be useful in assessing the patient's brain network status prior to deciding on treatment options. Ongoing research using invasive recordings may allow for future identification of mood biomarkers and network structure. A core limitation is that biomarker research may currently be limited by the internal heterogeneity of psychiatric disorders according to the current DSM-based classifications. New approaches are being developed and may soon be validated. Finally, care must be taken when incorporating closed-loop capabilities into neuromodulation systems, by ensuring the safe operation of the system and understanding the physiological dynamics. Neurophysiological tools are rapidly evolving and will likely define the next generation of neuromodulation therapies.

Abstract:Neurological disorders such as Parkinson's disease, stroke, and spinal cord injury can result in impairments of motor function, consciousness, cognition, and sensory processing. Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology, which facilitates direct communication between the brain and external devices, emerges as an innovative key to unlocking neurological conditions, demonstrating significant promise in this context. This comprehensive review uniquely synthesizes the latest advancements in BCI research across multiple neurological disorders, offering an interdisciplinary perspective on both clinical applications and emerging technologies. We explore the progress in BCI research and its applications in addressing various neurological conditions, with a particular focus on recent clinical studies and prospective developments. Initially, the review provides an up-to-date overview of BCI technology, encompassing its classification, operational principles, and prevalent paradigms. It then critically examines specific BCI applications in movement disorders, disorders of consciousness, cognitive and mental disorders, as well as sensory disorders, highlighting novel approaches and their potential impact on patient care. This review reveals emerging trends in BCI applications, such as the integration of artificial intelligence and the development of closed-loop systems, which represent significant advancements over previous technologies. The review concludes by discussing the prospects and directions of BCI technology, underscoring the need for interdisciplinary collaboration and ethical considerations. It emphasizes the importance of prioritizing bidirectional and high-performance BCIs, areas that have been underexplored in previous reviews. Additionally, we identify crucial gaps in current research, particularly in long-term clinical efficacy and the need for standardized protocols. The role of neurosurgery in spearheading the clinical translation of BCI research is highlighted. Abstract:It has been suggested that the field of biomedical engineering has been instrumental in creating new therapeutic modalities in rehabilitation of neurological disorders as well as motor dysfunction. Much of this can be attributed to advancements in the scientific research of the cranial nerves. This paper has an objective which is to combine all the efforts including and not limited to the use of electrical stimulation, imaging technique and various cranial imaging techniques in the repair of the cranial nerves. The narrative of this article will look at the synergistic effects of the use of such technology including how it may enhance certain working parameters in the patient through electrical stimulation, autologous nerve and bio-mimic engineered/derived recell scaffolds and Brain-Computer interfaces. Multidisciplinary approaches other than comprehensive examination and analysis of peer reviewed articles, clinical experiments, tests etc. which were relevant to seizures were also used for seaching of the topics of study. Qualitative and Quantitative methods were deployed to evaluate the outcome of applying electrical stimuli, BCIs as well as tissue-engineered scaffolds in the improvement of patient performances. The results consequence of the studies state that for instance electrical stimulation of cranial nerves can improve and restore cognitive abilities and also can be used for treatment of the neurologic disorders that are in existence. Neuromodulation is one of the applications that has some effects of improvement in the brain of the individual and direct treatment for disorders of neurology. There are thus many therapies that are directed for treatment of neurologicTissue engineering methods showed an effective strategy for restoring function in motor cranial nerves; however, the challenges of therapy are due to problems such as misdirection of reinnervation. Brain computer interfaces on the other hand offer a solution for the restoration of lost motor function with significant improvements. It is possible to achieve an increase in the recovery rate by up to 25% using the techniques of motor imagery and neurofeedback. Although the said positive attributes are present in reality, the document credences that more work still needs to be done in the investigation of new technologies, free from the bias on these existing technologies.

Abstract:Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) are at the forefront of medical technology, with transformative potential for neurological rehabilitation [1]. Motor imagery-based braincomputer interfaces (MI-BCIs) hold significant clinical value in neurorehabilitation [2,3]. By facilitating direct communication between the brain and external devices, BCIs are broadening the scope of neurorehabilitation, particularly for individuals with conditions such as spinal cord injury (SCI), stroke, and unilateral spatial neglect (USN) [4][5][6]. This special topic aims to highlight recent advancements, diverse applications, and the complex challenges associated with BCIs in managing neurological disorders. It includes four notable contributions, each providing unique insights into the potential of BCIs to enhance quality of life and functional abilities for those affected.In the study by Guo et al. on spinal cord injury (SCI), the authors explored a novel approach combining epidural electrical stimulation (EES) with near-infrared nerve stimulation (nINS) to enhance motor function specificity in SCI rats. The results revealed that adding optical stimulation to conventional EES could selectively activate target muscles with reduced stimulation intensity, offering an effective strategy to mitigate unwanted muscle activation and improve movement control. This dualstimulation approach presents a promising new avenue for addressing motor dysfunctions associated with SCI, paving the way for more precise neuromodulation in rehabilitation settings [7].patients. Using graph theory, the study assessed cortical reorganization in individuals undergoing VR-assisted therapy. The results demonstrated that the VR-based rehabilitation tool, Gesture Collection, significantly enhanced functional connectivity within motor-related brain regions compared to standard therapy. The improvement in connectivity, particularly within the frontoparietal and somatosensory networks, highlights the potential of VR to promote neuroplasticity and facilitate motor recovery in stroke survivors. By providing engaging and targeted motor exercises, VR-assisted rehabilitation could serve as a valuable complement to traditional stroke recovery programs [8].Wang et al. investigated the neural characteristics associated with neuropathic pain and numbness in SCI patients. Using electroencephalography (EEG), the study identified distinct brain network patterns differentiating patients with neuropathic pain from those experiencing numbness. Notably, individuals suffering from pain exhibited reduced power in lower frequency bands (θ and α) and increased power in the higher frequency band (β), accompanied by altered network connectivity. These findings suggest that EEG-based metrics could serve as valuable biomarkers for distinguishing different neuropathic symptoms in SCI patients, thereby informing personalized intervention strategies to improve chronic pain management in this population [9].The article by Gouret et al. provides a focused review of brain-computer interface (BCI) applications in the context of unilateral spatial neglect (USN), a common yet often underrecognized consequence of stroke. The review emphasizes the limited use of BCIs in addressing cognitive deficits, particularly visuo-attentional impairments, and underscores the need for expanded research in this area. The authors propose integrating VR with BCIs as a rehabilitation tool for USN, leveraging the cognitive engagement provided by VR to support attentional recovery. This perspective advocates for broadening the scope of BCI applications beyond motor rehabilitation to include cognitive therapy, thereby addressing a significant gap in current neurological treatment approaches [10] Collectively, these studies highlight the versatility and potential of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) in neurological rehabilitation. By enhancing motor recovery, managing pain, and supporting cognitive restoration, BCIs represent a multidimensional tool capable of addressing various aspects of neurological impairments [11]. However, several challenges remain, including the need for improved user accessibility, device usability, and ethical considerations. As BCI technology continues to advance, interdisciplinary collaboration will be crucial for translating experimental insights into real-world solutions that can be widely adopted in clinical practice. Abstract:Brain-computer interface (BCI) is a term used to describe systems that translate biological information into commands that can control external devices such as computers, prosthetics, and other machinery. While BCI is used in military applications, home control systems, and a wide array of entertainment, much of its modern interest and funding can be attributed to its utility in the medical community, where it has rapidly propelled advancements in the restoration or replacement of critical functions robbed from victims of disease, stroke, and traumatic injury. BCI devices can allow patients to move prosthetic limbs, operate devices such as wheelchairs or computers, and communicate through writing and speech-generating devices. In this article, we aim to provide an introductory summary of the historical context and modern growing utility of BCI, with specific interest in igniting the conversation of where and how the neurodiagnostics community and its associated parties can embrace and contribute to the world of BCI.

Abstract:Throughout life, the central nervous system (CNS) interacts with the world and with the body by activating muscles and excreting hormones. In contrast, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) quantify CNS activity and translate it into new artificial outputs that replace, restore, enhance, supplement, or improve the natural CNS outputs. BCIs thereby modify the interactions between the CNS and the environment. Unlike the natural CNS outputs that come from spinal and brainstem motoneurons, BCI outputs come from brain signals that represent activity in other CNS areas, such as the sensorimotor cortex. If BCIs are to be useful for important communication and control tasks in real life, the CNS must control these brain signals nearly as reliably and accurately as it controls spinal motoneurons. To do this, they might, for example, need to incorporate software that mimics the function of the subcortical and spinal mechanisms that participate in normal movement control. The realization of high reliability and accuracy is perhaps the most difficult and critical challenge now facing BCI research and development. The ongoing adaptive modifications that maintain effective natural CNS outputs take place primarily in the CNS. The adaptive modifications that maintain effective BCI outputs can also take place in the BCI. This means that the BCI operation depends on the effective collaboration of two adaptive controllers, the CNS and the BCI. Realization of this second adaptive controller, the BCI, and management of its interactions with concurrent adaptations in the CNS comprise another complex and critical challenge for BCI development. BCIs can use different kinds of brain signals recorded in different ways from different brain areas. Decisions about which signals recorded in which ways from which brain areas should be selected for which applications are empirical questions that can only be properly answered by experiments. BCIs, like other communication and control technologies, often face artifacts that contaminate or imitate their chosen signals. Noninvasive BCIs (e.g., EEG- or fNIRS-based) need to take special care to avoid interpreting nonbrain signals (e.g., cranial EMG) as brain signals. This typically requires comprehensive topographical and spectral evaluations. In theory, the outputs of BCIs can select a goal or control a process. In the future, the most effective BCIs will probably be those that combine goal selection and process control so as to distribute control between the BCI and the application in a fashion suited to the current action. Through such distribution, BCIs may most effectively imitate natural CNS operation. The primary measure of BCI development is the extent to which BCI systems benefit people with neuromuscular disorders. Thus, BCI clinical evaluation, validation, and dissemination is a key step. It is at the same time a complex and difficult process that depends on multidisciplinary collaboration and management of the demanding requirements of clinical studies. Twenty-five years ago, BCI research was an esoteric endeavor pursued in only a few isolated laboratories. It is now a steadily growing field that engages many hundreds of scientists, engineers, and clinicians throughout the world in an increasingly interconnected community that is addressing the key issues and pursuing the high potential of BCI technology.

Abstract:Brain stimulation technology has become a viable modality of reversible interventions in the effective treatment of many neurological and psychiatric disorders. It is aimed to restore brain dysfunction by the targeted delivery of specific electronic signal within or outside the brain to modulate neural activity on local and circuit levels. Development of therapeutic approaches with brain stimulation goes in tandem with the use of neuroimaging methodology in every step of the way. Indeed, multimodality neuroimaging tools have played important roles in target identification, neurosurgical planning, placement of stimulators and post-operative confirmation. They have also been indispensable in pre-treatment screen to identify potential responders and in post-treatment to assess the modulation of brain circuitry in relation to clinical outcome measures. Studies in patients to date have elucidated novel neurobiological mechanisms underlying the neuropathogenesis, action of stimulations, brain responses and therapeutic efficacy. In this article, we review some applications of deep brain stimulation for the treatment of several diseases in the field of neurology and psychiatry. We highlight how the synergistic combination of brain stimulation and neuroimaging technology is posed to accelerate the development of symptomatic therapies and bring revolutionary advances in the domain of bioelectronic medicine.

Abstract:As the proliferation of technology dramatically infiltrates all aspects of modern life, in many ways the world is becoming so dynamic and complex that technological capabilities are overwhelming human capabilities to optimally interact with and leverage those technologies. Fortunately, these technological advancements have also driven an explosion of neuroscience research over the past several decades, presenting engineers with a remarkable opportunity to design and develop flexible and adaptive brain-based neurotechnologies that integrate with and capitalize on human capabilities and limitations to improve human-system interactions. Major forerunners of this conception are brain-computer interfaces (BCIs), which to this point have been largely focused on improving the quality of life for particular clinical populations and include, for example, applications for advanced communications with paralyzed or locked in patients as well as the direct control of prostheses and wheelchairs. Near-term applications are envisioned that are primarily task oriented and are targeted to avoid the most difficult obstacles to development. In the farther term, a holistic approach to BCIs will enable a broad range of task-oriented and opportunistic applications by leveraging pervasive technologies and advanced analytical approaches to sense and merge critical brain, behavioral, task, and environmental information. Communications and other applications that are envisioned to be broadly impacted by BCIs are highlighted; however, these represent just a small sample of the potential of these technologies.

Abstract:Since the implementation of deep-brain stimulation as a therapy for movement disorders, there has been little progress in the clinical application of novel alternative treatments. Movement disorders are a group of neurological conditions, which are characterised with impairment of voluntary movement and share similar anatomical loci across the basal ganglia. The focus of the current review is on Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease as they are the most investigated hypokinetic and hyperkinetic movement disorders, respectively. The last decade has seen enormous advances in the development of laboratory techniques that control neuronal activity. The two major ways to genetically control the neuronal function are: 1) expression of light-sensitive proteins that allow for the optogenetic control of the neuronal spiking and 2) expression or suppression of genes that control the transcription and translation of proteins. However, the translation of these methodologies from the laboratories into the clinics still faces significant challenges. The article summarizes the latest developments in optogenetics and gene therapy. Here, I compare the physiological mechanisms of established electrical deep brain stimulation to the experimental optogenetical deep brain stimulation. I compare also the advantages of DNA- and RNA-based techniques for gene therapy of familial movement disorders. I highlight the benefits and the major issues of each technique and I discuss the translational potential and clinical feasibility of optogenetic stimulation and gene expression control. Abstract:The kinetic-plot approach, in which experimental t(0) and N-values are extrapolated to the performance at maximum system pressure by increasing the column length, was validated by coupling 250×3 mm columns packed with 3 μm particles. The extra-column volume introduced by coupling columns could be neglected with respect to the peak volumes. Plate numbers of up to 132,000 were experimentally achieved by coupling four columns. The maximum deviation between the experimental and predicted plate numbers was 7% for two coupled columns, and decreasing to 0.1% for four coupled columns. Kinetic plots were used to find the conditions to separate a critical pair, with a preset value for the effective plate number, in the shortest possible time. For high-efficiency separations yielding 100,000 effective plates, the optimum critical-pair retention factor was around 4.5. Kinetic plots are presented to find the optimal column length to obtain the fastest possible 100,000 effective-plate separation, taking into account the effect of mobile-phase viscosity on column pressure, and consequently the optimum column length.

Abstract:Abstract Brain–computer interfaces (BCIs) make possible to interact with the external environment by decoding the mental intention of individuals. BCIs can therefore be used to address basic neuroscience questions but also to unlock a variety of applications from exoskeleton control to neurofeedback rehabilitation. In general, BCI usability depends on the ability to comprehensively characterize brain functioning and correctly identify the user’s mental state. To this end, much of the efforts have focused on improving the classification algorithms taking into account localized brain activities as input features. Despite considerable improvement BCI performance is still unstable and, as a matter of fact, current features represent oversimplified descriptors of brain functioning. In the last decade, growing evidence has shown that the brain works as a networked system composed of multiple specialized and spatially distributed areas that dynamically integrate information. While more complex, looking at how remote brain regions functionally interact represents a grounded alternative to better describe brain functioning. Thanks to recent advances in network science, i.e. a modern field that draws on graph theory, statistical mechanics, data mining and inferential modeling, scientists have now powerful means to characterize complex brain networks derived from neuroimaging data. Notably, summary features can be extracted from brain networks to quantitatively measure specific organizational properties across a variety of topological scales. In this topical review, we aim to provide the state-of-the-art supporting the development of a network theoretic approach as a promising tool for understanding BCIs and improve usability.

Abstract:The development of brain-machine interface technology is a logical next step in the overall direction of neuro-prosthetics. Many of the required technological advances that will be required for clinical translation of brain-machine interfaces are already under development, including a new generation of recording electrodes, the decoding and interpretation of signals underlying intention and planning, actuators for implementation of mental plans in virtual or real contexts, direct somatosensory feedback to the nervous system to refine actions, and training to encourage plasticity in neural circuits. Although pre-clinical studies in nonhuman primates demonstrate high efficacy in a realistic motor task with motor cortical recordings, there are many challenges in the clinical translation of even simple tasks and devices. Foremost among these challenges is the development of biocompatible electrodes capable of long-term, stable recording of brain activity and implantable amplifiers and signal processors that are sufficiently resistant to noise and artifact to faithfully transmit recorded signals to the external environment. Whether there is a suitable market for such new technology depends on its efficacy in restoring and enhancing neural function, its risks of implantation, and its long-term efficacy and usefulness. Now is a critical time in brain-machine interface development because most ongoing studies are science-based and noncommercial, allowing new approaches to be included in commercial schemes under development.

Abstract:Abstract Almost 100 years ago experiments involving electrically stimulating and recording from the brain and the body launched new discoveries and debates on how electricity, movement, and thoughts are related. Decades later the development of brain-computer interface technology began, which now targets a wide range of applications. Potential uses include augmentative communication for locked-in patients and restoring sensorimotor function in those who are battling disease or have suffered traumatic injury. Technical and surgical challenges still surround the development of brain-computer technology, however, before it can be widely deployed. In this review we explore these challenges, historical perspectives, and the remarkable achievements of clinical study participants who have bravely forged new paths for future beneficiaries.

Abstract:The brain-computer interface (BCI) is one of the most powerful tools in neuroscience and generally includes a recording system, a processor system, and a stimulation system. Optogenetics has the advantages of bidirectional regulation, high spatiotemporal resolution, and cell-specific regulation, which expands the application scenarios of BCIs. In recent years, optogenetic BCIs have become widely used in the lab with the development of materials and software. The systems were designed to be more integrated, lightweight, biocompatible, and power efficient, as were the wireless transmission and chip-level embedded BCIs. The software is also constantly improving, with better real-time performance and accuracy and lower power consumption. On the other hand, as a cutting-edge technology spanning multidisciplinary fields including molecular biology, neuroscience, material engineering, and information processing, optogenetic BCIs have great application potential in neural decoding, enhancing brain function, and treating neural diseases. Here, we review the development and application of optogenetic BCIs. In the future, combined with other functional imaging techniques such as near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), optogenetic BCIs can modulate the function of specific circuits, facilitate neurological rehabilitation, assist perception, establish a brain-to-brain interface, and be applied in wider application scenarios.

Abstract:Brain-computer interface (BCI) can be used as a real-time bidirectional information gateway between the brain and machines. In particular, rapid progress in invasive BCI, propelled by recent developments in electrode materials, miniature and power-efficient electronics, and neural signal decoding technologies has attracted wide attention. In this review, we first introduce the concepts of neuronal signal decoding and encoding that are fundamental for information exchanges in BCI. Then, we review the history and recent advances in invasive BCI, particularly through studies using neural signals for controlling external devices on one hand, and modulating brain activity on the other hand. Specifically, regarding modulating brain activity, we focus on two types of techniques, applying electrical stimulation to cortical and deep brain tissues, respectively. Finally, we discuss the related ethical issues concerning the clinical application of this emerging technology.

Abstract:Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) has evolved into a well-accepted add-on treatment for patients with severe Parkinsons disease as well as for other chronic neurological conditions. The focal action of electrical stimulation can yield better responses and it exposes the patient to fewer side effects compared to pharmaceuticals distributed throughout the body toward the brain. On the other hand, the current practice of DBS is hampered by the relatively coarse level of neuromodulation achieved. Optogenetics, in contrast, offers the perspective of much more selective actions on the various physiological structures, provided that the stimulated cells are rendered sensitive to the action of light. Optogenetics has experienced tremendous progress since its first <i>in vivo</i> applications about 10 years ago. Recent advancements of viral vector technology for gene transfer substantially reduce vector-associated cytotoxicity and immune responses. This brings about the possibility to transfer this technology into the clinic as a possible alternative to DBS and neuromodulation. New paths could be opened toward a rich panel of clinical applications. Some technical issues still limit the long term use in humans but realistic perspectives quickly emerge. Despite a rapid accumulation of observations about patho-physiological mechanisms, it is still mostly serendipity and empiric adjustments that dictate clinical practice while more efficient logically designed interventions remain rather exceptional. Interestingly, it is also very much the neuro technology developed around optogenetics that offers the most promising tools to fill in the existing knowledge gaps about brain function in health and disease. The present review examines Parkinson's disease and refractory epilepsy as use cases for possible optogenetic stimulation therapies.

Abstract:Stroke is one of the most common and debilitating neurological conditions worldwide. Those who survive experience motor, sensory, speech, vision, and/or cognitive deficits that severely limit remaining quality of life. While rehabilitation programs can help improve patients' symptoms, recovery is often limited, and patients frequently continue to experience impairments in functional status. In this review, invasive neuromodulation techniques to augment the effects of conventional rehabilitation methods are described, including vagus nerve stimulation (VNS), deep brain stimulation (DBS) and brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). In addition, the evidence base for each of these techniques, pivotal trials, and future directions are explored. Finally, emerging technologies such as functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and the shift to artificial intelligence-enabled implants and wearables are examined. While the field of implantable devices for chronic stroke recovery is still in a nascent stage, the data reviewed are suggestive of immense potential for reducing the impact and impairment from this globally prevalent disorder.

Abstract:BackgroundBrain-Computer Interface (BCI) is a set of technologies that are of increasing interest to researchers. BCI has been proposed as assistive technology for individuals who are non-communicative or paralyzed, such as those with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or spinal cord injury. The technology has also been suggested for enhancement and entertainment uses, and there are companies currently marketing BCI devices for those purposes (e.g., gaming) as well as health-related purposes (e.g., communication). The unprecedented direct connection created by BCI between human brains and computer hardware raises various ethical, social, and legal challenges that merit further examination and discussion.MethodsTo identify and characterize the key issues associated with BCI use, we performed a scoping review of biomedical ethics literature, analyzing the ethics concerns cited across multiple disciplines, including philosophy and medicine.ResultsBased on this investigation, we report that BCI research and its potential translation to therapeutic intervention generate significant ethical, legal, and social concerns, notably with regards to personhood, stigma, autonomy, privacy, research ethics, safety, responsibility, and justice. Our review of the literature determined, furthermore, that while these issues have been enumerated extensively, few concrete recommendations have been expressed.ConclusionsWe conclude that future research should focus on remedying a lack of practical solutions to the ethical challenges of BCI, alongside the collection of empirical data on the perspectives of the public, BCI users, and BCI researchers.

Abstract:Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is one of the most important clinical therapies for neurological disorders. DBS also has great potential to become a great tool for clinical neuroscience research. Recently, the National Engineering Laboratory for Neuromodulation at Tsinghua University held an international Deep Brain Stimulation Initiative workshop to discuss the cutting-edge technological achievements and clinical applications of DBS. We specifically addressed new clinical approaches and challenges in DBS for movement disorders (Parkinson's disease and dystonia), clinical application toward neurorehabilitation for stroke, and the progress and challenges toward DBS for neuropsychiatric disorders. This review highlighted key developments in (1) neuroimaging, with advancements in 3-Tesla magnetic resonance imaging DBS compatibility for exploration of brain network mechanisms; (2) novel DBS recording capabilities for uncovering disease pathophysiology; and (3) overcoming global healthcare burdens with online-based DBS programming technology for connecting patient communities. The successful event marks a milestone for global collaborative opportunities in clinical development of neuromodulation to treat major neurological disorders.

Abstract:A brain–computer interface (BCI) serves as a direct communication channel between brain activity and external devices, typically a computer or robotic limb. Advances in technology have led to the increasing use of intracranial electrical recording or stimulation in the treatment of conditions such as epilepsy, depression, and movement disorders. This indicates that BCIs can offer clinical neurological rehabilitation for patients with disabilities and functional impairments. They also provide a means to restore consciousness and functionality for patients with sequelae from major brain diseases. Whether invasive or non-invasive, the collected cortical or deep signals can be decoded and translated for communication. This review aims to provide an overview of the advantages of endovascular BCIs compared with conventional BCIs, along with insights into the specific anatomical regions under study. Given the rapid progress, we also provide updates on ongoing clinical trials and the prospects for current research involving endovascular electrodes.
