Abstract:Topological swirling spin textures, such as skyrmions and merons, have recently attracted much attention as a unique building block for high-density magnetic information devices. The controlled transformation among different types of such quasi-particles is an important challenge, while it was previously achieved only in a few non-centrosymmetric systems characterized by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Here, we report an experimental discovery of multi-step topological transitions among a variety of meron and skyrmion crystal states in a centrosymmetric magnet GdRu$_2$Ge$_2$. By performing the detailed magnetic structure analysis based on resonant X-ray and neutron scattering experiments as well as electron transport measurements, we have found that this compound hosts periodic lattice of elliptic skyrmions, meron/anti-meron pairs, and circular skyrmions as a function of external magnetic field. The diameter of these objects is as small as 2.7 nm, which is almost two orders of magnitude smaller than typical non-centrosymmetric magnets. Such an intricate manner of topological magnetic transitions are well reproduced by a theoretical model considering the competition between RKKY interactions at inequivalent wave vectors. The present findings demonstrate that even a simple centrosymmetric magnet with competing interactions can be a promising material platform to realize a richer variety of nanometric magnetic quasi-particles with distinctive symmetry and topology, whose stability may be tunable by various external stimuli.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are particle-like spin-swirling objects ubiquitously realized in magnets. They are topologically stable chiral kinks composed of multiple modulation waves of spiral spin structures, where the helicity of each spiral is usually selected by antisymmetric exchange interactions in noncentrosymmetric crystals. We report an experimental observation of a distorted triangular lattice of skyrmions in the polar tetragonal magnet EuNiGe$_3$, reflecting a strong coupling with the lattice. Moreover, through resonant x-ray diffraction, we find that the magnetic helicity of the original spiral at zero field is reversed when the skyrmion lattice is formed in a magnetic field. This means that the energy gain provided by the skyrmion lattice formation is larger than the antisymmetric exchange interaction. Our findings will lead us to a further understanding of emergent magnetic states.

Field-induced transformation between triangular and square skyrmion crystals in a tetragonal polar magnet

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions with topologically nontrivial spin textures form a variety of periodic structures depending on microscopic interactions and lattice symmetry. We theoretically investigate a transformation between triangular and square skyrmion crystals against an external magnetic field in a polar tetragonal magnet. By performing the simulated annealing for a classical spin model, we show that the competition of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction at multiple wave vectors is a key ingredient in inducing the structural transition in terms of the skyrmion crystals. The present results indicate the importance of magnetic frustration in momentum space as the origin of exotic topological phase transitions.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmion is a topologically stable particle-like swirling spin texture potentially suitable for high-density information bit, which was first observed in noncentrosymmetric magnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Recently, nanometric skyrmion has also been discovered in centrosymmetric rare-earth compounds, and the identification of their skyrmion formation mechanism and further search of nontrivial spin textures are highly demanded. Here, magnetic structures in a prototypical skyrmion-hosting centrosymmetric tetragonal magnet GdRu<sub>2</sub> Si<sub>2</sub> is exhaustively studied by performing the resonant X-ray scattering experiments. A rich variety of double-Q magnetic structures, including the antiferroic order of meron(half-skyrmion)/anti-meron-like textures with fractional local topological charges are identified. The observed intricate magnetic phase diagram is successfully reproduced by the theoretical framework considering the four-spin interaction mediated by itinerant electrons and magnetic anisotropy. The present results will contribute to the better understanding of the novel skyrmion formation mechanism in this centrosymmetric rare-earth compound, and suggest that itinerant electrons can ubiquitously host a variety of unique multiple-Q spin orders in a simple crystal lattice system.

Color bar indicates mZ magnitude and scale bar indicates ρSK magnitude. Recently a large variety of non‐collinear spin textures have been revealed in various crystals with different symmetry groups. Of particular interest are crystals with D2d symmetry that exhibit a complex variety of stable and metastable spin textures that includes antiskyrmions, elliptical Bloch‐skyrmions, fractional‐antiskyrmions, fractional Bloch‐skyrmions, and type‐II trivial‐bubbles. The observation of these structures necessitates their stabilization via magnetic field and temperature protocols which demands a thorough understanding of their creation, transformation, and collapse dynamics. Utilizing the real‐space imaging capabilities of Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, the generation and annihilation of diverse spin textures in a single D2d Heusler compound are demonstrated. It is showed that antiskyrmions and elliptical Bloch‐skyrmions can be deformed into more elaborate elongated magnetic nano‐objects through a collapse mechanism. Their elongation is governed by the intrinsic antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii‐Moriya vector exchange interaction and dipolar energy present in the system. Furthermore, antiskyrmions are found to be metastable at all temperatures on field‐cooling, while a topological phase transformation from elliptical Bloch‐skyrmions to antiskyrmions rather takes places on field‐heating. These results are corroborated by micromagnetic simulations and demonstrate the efficient manipulation of different spin textures in a D2d compound by varying field and temperature protocols and represents a critical step toward the application of magnetic skyrmions.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are topologically protected chiral spin textures which present opportunities for next-generation magnetic data storage and logic information technologies. The topology of these structures originates in the geometric configuration of the magnetic spins - more generally described as the structure. While the skyrmion structure is most often depicted using a 2D projection of the three-dimensional structure, recent works have emphasized the role of all three dimensions in determining the topology and their response to external stimuli. In this work, grazing-incidence small-angle neutron scattering and polarized neutron reflectometry are used to determine the three-dimensional structure of hybrid skyrmions. The structure of the hybrid skyrmions, which includes a combination of Néel-like and Bloch-like components along their length, is expected to significantly contribute to their notable stability, which includes ambient conditions. To interpret the neutron scattering data, micromagnetic simulations of the hybrid skyrmions were performed, and the corresponding diffraction patterns were determined using a Born approximation transformation. The converged magnetic profile reveals the magnetic structure along with the skyrmion depth profile, including the thickness of the Bloch and Néel segments and the diameter of the core.

Hybrid skyrmion and anti-skyrmion phases in polar $C_{\rm 4v}$ systems

Abstract:We investigate the stability of the skyrmion crystal phase in a tetragonal polar system with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction by focusing on the symmetry of ordering wave vectors forming the skyrmion crystal. Our analysis is based on numerical simulations for an effective spin model, which is derived from the weak-coupling regime in the Kondo lattice model on a polar square lattice. We show that a hybrid square skyrmion crystal consisting of Bloch and Néel spin textures emerges even under polar $C_{\rm 4v}$ symmetries when the ordering wave vectors correspond to low-symmetric wave vectors in momentum space, which is in contrast to the expectation from the Lifshitz invariants. We also show the instability toward the anti-skyrmion crystal and rhombic skyrmion crystal depending on the direction of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vector in momentum space. Furthermore, we show that the regions of the skyrmion crystal phases are affected by taking into account the symmetric anisotropic exchange interaction. Our results open the potential direction of engineering the hybrid skyrmion crystal and anti-skyrmion crystal phases in polar magnets.

High-topological-number skyrmions and phase transition in two-dimensional frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ magnets

Abstract:With the rapidly expanded field of two-dimensional(2D) magnetic materials, the frustrated magnetic skyrmions are attracting growing interest recently. Here, based on hexagonal close-packed (HCP) lattice of $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg spins model, we systematically investigate the frustrated skyrmions and phase transition by micromagnetic simulations and first-principles calculations. The results show that four spin phases of antiferromagnetic, labyrinth domain, skyrmion and ferromagnetic textures are determined by the identified ranges of $J_1$-$J_2$. Importantly, skyrmion phase with an increasing topological number ($Q$) covers a wider $J_1$-$J_2$ area. Then, the diameter of skyrmions can be tuned by the frustration strength ($|J_2/J_1|$) or external magnetic field. Besides, a phase transition from N$\acute{e}$el to Bloch type skyrmion is observed due to the change of the helicity with the variation of $|J_2/J_1|$. Furthermore, as increasing magnetic field, the skyrmions with high $Q$ ($\ge 3$) tend to split into the ones with $Q=1$, thereby achieving a lower systematic energy. Additionally, we find that the CoCl$_2$ monolayer satisfies the requirement of the frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ magnet, and the related magnetic behaviors agree with the above conclusions. The frustration-induced skyrmions are stable without the manipulation of temperature and magnetic field. Our results may open a possible way toward spintronic applications based on High-topological-number and nanoscale topological spin textures of skyrmions.

Phase Shift in Skyrmion Crystals

Abstract:The skyrmion crystal is a periodic array of a swirling topological spin texture. Since it is regarded as an interference pattern by multiple helical spin density waves, the texture changes with the relative phases among the constituent waves. Although the phase degree of freedom is relevant to not only magnetism but also transport properties, its effect has not been elucidated thus far. We here theoretically show that a phase shift can occur in the skyrmion crystals to stabilize tetra-axial vortex crystals with staggered scalar spin chirality. This leads to spontaneous breaking of the lattice symmetry, which results in nonreciprocal transport phenomena even without the relativistic spin-orbit coupling. We show that such a phase shift is driven by long-range chirality interactions or thermal fluctuations in spin-charge coupled systems.

Abstract:Theoretical studies have predicted that interactions between magnetic skyrmions and antiskyrmions give rise to various properties, such as unique arrangements, pair annihilation, topological transformation, and rectilinear and trochoidal motions that do not appear in only skyrmions or antiskyrmions. Recently, experimental studies have discovered that a Heusler material with the anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction shows a coexisting phase at 268 K and in-plane magnetic field-induced topological transformation of elliptical skyrmions and square-shaped antiskyrmions. Therefore, experimentally observing the coexisting phase and the topological transformation could be promising for developing skyrmion–antiskyrmion-based spintronics. However, such interactions and the detailed transformation mechanism remain unrevealed and unclear, respectively. Using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy experiments and micromagnetic simulations, we comprehensively study the properties in a coexisting phase of skyrmions and antiskyrmions in a Heusler material, Mn1.3Pt1.0Pd0.1Sn. Control of dipolar interaction (the sample thickness) allows us to realize a room-temperature coexisting phase. We find that the topological transformation occurs stochastically rather than deterministically, which can be explained by considering the magnetic point group and the direction of an in-plane magnetic field. We further observe isotropic long-range repulsive interaction between skyrmions and antiskyrmions in contrast to the conventional thought of the relative-position- and helicity-dependent short-range pairwise interactions, and deformation of skyrmions and antiskyrmions depending on the distance between them. Our simulations show that the deformation exerts significant influence on the magnetic energies and the energy landscape, contributing to the interaction. Our results provide insight into coexisting phases of skyrmions and antiskyrmions and a guide for developing skyrmion–antiskyrmion-based spintronics.

Abstract:Abstract Skyrmions and skyrmioniums are topologically non-trivial spin textures found in chiral magnetic systems. Understanding the dynamics of these particle-like excitations is crucial for leveraging their diverse functionalities in spintronic devices. This study investigates the dynamics and evolution of chiral spin textures in [Pt/Co] 3 /Ru/[Co/Pt] 3 multilayers with ferromagnetic interlayer exchange coupling. By precisely controlling the excitation and relaxation processes through combined magnetic field and electric current manipulation, reversible conversion between skyrmions and skyrmioniums is achieved. Additionally, we observe the topological conversion from a skyrmionium to a skyrmion, characterized by the sudden emergence of the skyrmion Hall effect. The experimental realization of reversible conversion between distinct magnetic topological spin textures represents a significant development that promises to expedite the advancement of the next generation of spintronic devices.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions are vortex-like topological spin textures often observed to form a triangular-lattice skyrmion crystal in structurally chiral magnets with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Recently $\beta$-Mn structure-type Co-Zn-Mn alloys were identified as a new class of chiral magnet to host such skyrmion crystal phases, while $\beta$-Mn itself is known as hosting an elemental geometrically frustrated spin liquid. Here we report the intermediate composition system Co$_7$Zn$_7$Mn$_6$ to be a unique host of two disconnected, thermal-equilibrium topological skyrmion phases; one is a conventional skyrmion crystal phase stabilized by thermal fluctuations and restricted to exist just below the magnetic transition temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$, and the other is a novel three-dimensionally disordered skyrmion phase that is stable well below $T_\mathrm{c}$. The stability of this new disordered skyrmion phase is due to a cooperative interplay between the chiral magnetism with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the frustrated magnetism inherent to $\beta$-Mn.

Manipulation of Magnetic Skyrmion in a 2D van der Waals Heterostructure via Both Electric and Magnetic Fields

Abstract:As a promising candidate for the much-desired low power consumption spintronic devices, 2D magnetic van der Waals material also provides a versatile platform for the design and control of topological spin textures. In this work on WTe2/CrCl3 bilayer van der Waals heterostructures, a complete Néel-type skyrmion–bimeron–ferromagnet phase transition is demonstrated, accompanied by the evolution of the topological number. This cyclic transition, mediated by a perpendicular magnetic field, is largely driven by the competition between the out-of-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy and magnetic dipole–dipole interaction. In the presence of a driving current, the Néel-type skyrmion gains a higher velocity yet larger skyrmion Hall angle, in comparison to the bimeron. By incorporating a ferroelectric CuInP2S6 monolayer as a substrate, writing and erasing of skyrmions may be regulated using a ferroelectric polarization. This work sheds light on a novel approach to the design and control of magnetic skyrmions on 2D van der Waals materials.

Observation of a non-reciprocal skyrmion Hall effect of hybrid chiral skyrmion tubes in synthetic antiferromagnetic multilayers

Abstract:Topological spin textures in magnetic materials beyond two-dimensional skyrmions have attracted attention for electronics beyond CMOS technologies. In particular, three-dimensional (3D) topological spin textures are promising due to the expected complex non-linear dynamics as well as high static and dynamic thermal stability. In multilayer heterostructures, a hybrid chiral skyrmion tube is a well-known example of a 3D topological spin texture, exhibiting an intriguing chirality transition along the thickness direction. This transition progresses from left-handed to right-handed Néel-type chirality, passing through a Bloch-type intermediate state. Such an exotic spin configuration potentially exhibits distinctly different dynamics from that of the common skyrmion tube that exhibits a homogeneous chirality; yet these dynamics have not been ascertained so far. Here we reveal the distinct features of current-induced dynamics that result from the hybrid chiral skyrmion tube structure in synthetic antiferromagnetic (SyAFM) multilayers. Strikingly, the SyAFM hybrid chiral skyrmion tubes exhibit a non-reciprocal skyrmion Hall effect in the flow regime. The non-reciprocity can even be tuned by the degree of magnetic compensation in the SyAFM systems. Our theoretical modeling qualitatively corroborates that the non-reciprocity stems from the dynamic oscillation of skyrmion helicity during its current-induced motion. The findings highlight the critical role of the internal degrees of freedom of these complex skyrmion tubes for their current-induced dynamics.

Abstract:Spontaneously emergent chirality is an issue of fundamental importance across the natural sciences. It has been argued that a unidirectional (chiral) rotation of a mechanical ratchet is forbidden in thermal equilibrium, but becomes possible in systems out of equilibrium. Here we report our finding that a topologically nontrivial spin texture known as a skyrmion--a particle-like object in which spins point in all directions to wrap a sphere--constitutes such a ratchet. By means of Lorentz transmission electron microscopy we show that micrometre-sized crystals of skyrmions in thin films of Cu2OSeO3 and MnSi exhibit a unidirectional rotation motion. Our numerical simulations based on a stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation suggest that this rotation is driven solely by thermal fluctuations in the presence of a temperature gradient, whereas in thermal equilibrium it is forbidden by the Bohr-van Leeuwen theorem. We show that the rotational flow of magnons driven by the effective magnetic field of skyrmions gives rise to the skyrmion rotation, therefore suggesting that magnons can be used to control the motion of these spin textures.
Square and rhombic lattices of magnetic skyrmions in a centrosymmetric binary compound

While magnetic skyrmions were originally discovered in noncentrosymmetric systems with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, recently a nanometric skyrmion lattice has also been reported for centrosymmetric rare-earth compounds, such as Gd 2 PdSi 3 and GdRu 2 Si 2 . For the latter systems, a distinct skyrmion formation mechanism mediated by itinerant electrons has been proposed, and the search of a simpler model system allowing for a better understanding of their intricate magnetic phase diagram is highly demanded. Here, we report the discovery of square and rhombic lattices of nanometric skyrmions in a centrosymmetric binary compound EuAl 4 , by performing small-angle neutron and resonant elastic X-ray scattering experiments. Unlike previously reported centrosymmetric skyrmion-hosting materials, EuAl 4 shows multiple-step reorientation of the fundamental magnetic modulation vector as a function of magnetic field, probably reflecting a delicate balance of associated itinerant-electron-mediated interactions. The present results demonstrate that a variety of distinctive skyrmion orders can be derived even in a simple centrosymmetric binary compound, which highlights rare-earth intermetallic systems as a promising platform to realize/control the competition of multiple topological magnetic phases in a single material.

Abstract:Magnetic skyrmions promise breakthroughs in future memory and computing devices due to their inherent stability and small size. Their creation and current driven motion have been recently observed at room temperature, but the key mechanisms of their formation are not yet well-understood. Here it is shown that in heavy metal/ferromagnet heterostructures, pulsed currents can drive morphological transitions between labyrinth-like, stripe-like, and skyrmionic states. Using high-resolution X-ray microscopy, the spin texture evolution with temperature and magnetic field is imaged and it is demonstrated that with transient Joule heating, topological charges can be injected into the system, driving it across the stripe-skyrmion boundary. The observations are explained through atomistic spin dynamic and micromagnetic simulations that reveal a crossover to a global skyrmionic ground state above a threshold magnetic field, which is found to decrease with increasing temperature. It is demonstrated how by tuning the phase stability, one can reliably generate skyrmions by short current pulses and stabilize them at zero field, providing new means to create and manipulate spin textures in engineered chiral ferromagnets.

Abstract:Topological magnetic skyrmions in centrosymmetric systems exhibit a higher degrees of freedom in their helicity, hence possess a great potential in the advanced spintronics including skyrmion based quantum computation. However, the centrosymmetric magnets also display non-topological trivial bubbles along with the topological skyrmions. Hence it is utmost priority to investigate the impact of different magnetic ground states and their underlying interactions on the stabilization of magnetic skyrmions in cetrosymmetric magnets. Here, we present a combined theoretical and experimental study on the role of non-collinear magnetic ground state on the skyrmion stabilization in a series of exchange frustrated non-collinear ferromagnetic system MnFe1-xCoxGe. With the help of neutron diffraction (ND) and Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (LTEM) studies, we show that hexagonal skyrmions lattice emerges as a stable field driven state only when the underlying magnetic ground state is collinear with easy-axis anisotropy. In contrast, non-topological type-II bubbles are found to be stable state in the case of non-collinear magnetic ordering with partial in-plane anisotropy. Furthermore, we also find that the skyrmions transform to the non-topological bubbles when the system undergoes a spin reorientation transition from the easy-axis to easy-cone ferromagnetic phase. Our results categorically establish the significant role of in-plane magnetic moment/anisotropy that hinders the stability of skyrmion both in the case of collinear and non-collinear magnets. Thus, the present study offers a wide range of opportunities to manipulate the stability of dipolar skyrmions by changing the intrinsic characteristics of the materials.

Abstract:Since the discovery of ferromagnetic two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) crystals, significant interest on such 2D magnets has emerged, inspired by their appealing physical properties and integration with other 2D family for unique heterostructures. In known 2D magnets, spin-orbit coupling (SOC) stabilizes perpendicular magnetic anisotropy down to one or a few monolayers. Such a strong SOC could also lift the chiral degeneracy, leading to the formation of topological magnetic textures such as skyrmions through the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI). Here, we report the experimental observation of Néel-type chiral magnetic skyrmions and their lattice (SkX) formation in a vdW ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2 (FGT). We demonstrate the ability to drive an individual skyrmion by short current pulses along a vdW heterostructure, FGT/h−BN , as highly required for any skyrmion-based spintronic device. Using first principle calculations supported by experiments, we unveil the origin of DMI being the interfaces with oxides, which then allows us to engineer vdW heterostructures for desired chiral states.
