Abstract:AIMS:The electroencephalography (EEG) microstates are indicative of fundamental information processing mechanisms, which are severely damaged in patients with prolonged disorders of consciousness (pDoC). We aimed to improve the topographic analysis of EEG microstates and explore indicators available for diagnosis and prognosis prediction of patients with pDoC, which were still lacking.METHODS:We conducted EEG recordings on 59 patients with pDoC and 32 healthy controls. We refined the microstate method to accurately estimate topographical differences, and then classify and forecast the prognosis of patients with pDoC. An independent dataset was used to validate the conclusion.RESULTS:Through optimized topographic analysis, the global explained variance (GEV) of microstate E increased significantly in groups with reduced levels of consciousness. However, its ability to classify the VS/UWS group was poor. In addition, the optimized GEV of microstate E exhibited a statistically significant decrease in the good prognosis group as opposed to the group with a poor prognosis. Furthermore, the optimized GEV of microstate E strongly predicted a patient's prognosis.CONCLUSION:This technique harmonizes with the existing microstate analysis and exhibits precise and comprehensive differences in microstate topography between groups. Furthermore, this method has significant potential for evaluating the clinical prognosis of pDoC patients.
Cross-Task Consistency of Electroencephalography-Based Mental Workload Indicators: Comparisons Between Power Spectral Density and Task-Irrelevant Auditory Event-Related Potentials

Abstract:Mental workload (MWL) estimators based on ongoing electroencephalography (EEG) and event-related potentials (ERPs) have shown great potentials to build adaptive aiding systems for human–machine systems by estimating MWL in real time. However, extracting EEG features which are consistent in indicating MWL across different tasks is still one of the critical challenges. This study attempts to compare the cross-task consistency in indexing MWL variations between two commonly used EEG-based MWL indicators, power spectral density (PSD) of ongoing EEG and task-irrelevant auditory ERPs (tir-aERPs). The verbal N-back and the multi-attribute task battery (MATB), both with two difficulty levels, were employed in the experiment, along with task-irrelevant auditory probes. EEG was recorded from 17 subjects when they were performing the tasks. The tir-aERPs elicited by the auditory probes and the relative PSDs of ongoing EEG between two consecutive auditory probes were extracted and statistically analyzed to reveal the effects of MWL and task type. Discriminant analysis and support vector machine were employed to examine the generalization of tir-aERP and PSD features in indexing MWL variations across different tasks. The results showed that the amplitudes of tir-aERP components, N1, early P3a, late P3a, and the reorienting negativity, significantly decreased with the increasing MWL in both N-back and MATB. Task type had no obvious influence on the amplitudes and topological layout of the MWL-sensitive tir-aERP features. The relative PSDs in θ, α, and low β bands were also sensitive to MWL variations. However, the MWL-sensitive PSD features and their topological patterns were significantly affected by task type. The cross-task classification results based on tir-aERP features also significantly outperformed the PSD features. These results suggest that the tir-aERPs should be potentially more consistent MWL indicators across very different task types when compared to PSD. The current study may provide new insights to our understanding of the common and distinctive neuropsychological essences of MWL across different tasks.

Abstract:This study examined whether there are neural markers of individual differences in working memory (WM) capacity and whether these differences are only manifest when performing a demanding WM task or at all levels of difficulty. Each subject's WM capacity was estimated using a modified digit span task prior to participation in an N-back task that varied difficulty from 1- to 4-back. While performing the N-back task, subjects wore scalp electrodes that allowed measurement of both event-related potentials (ERP) and event-related synchronization and desynchronization (ERS/ERD). Those subjects classified as low WM were more affected by the higher cognitive demands (many more errors in the 4-back task and generally slower responses) than those classified as high WM. These behavioral differences between the two groups were also apparent in the neural markers. Specifically, low WM subjects, when compared with high WM subjects, produced smaller P300 amplitudes and theta ERS, as well as greater alpha ER]) at the most difficult level. Importantly, the observed differences in electrophysiological responses between the two groups were also observed at the lowest difficulty level, not just when the task challenged WM capacity. In addition, P300 amplitudes and alpha ERD responses were found to correlate with individual WM capacities independent of the task difficulty. These results suggest that there are qualitative neural differences among individuals with different WM capacities when approaching cognitive operations. Individuals with high WM capacities may make more efficient use of neural resources to keep their attention focused on the task-relevant information when performing cognitive tasks. Abstract:Mental workload (MWL) assessment is crucial in fatigue evaluation applications to avoid potential health problems or serious accidents. This article proposes an MWL recognition approach developed with a topological investigation of the electroencephalography (EEG)-based brain functional connectivity (FC) network. In this work, the graph-filtration-based features are extracted to reveal the brain state variations using the persistent homology technique from the topological data analysis (TDA) area. Three public open benchmark datasets are used to test and verify the recognition ability of the proposed method, which are developed with the MWL assessment experiments of Simultaneous Capacity (SIMKAP) test tasks, arithmetic calculations, and Multi-Attribute Task Battery II (MATB-II) MWL tasks. The experimental results show that the proposed topological FC network analysis scheme shows excellent distinguishing ability in brain state recognition, comparable to or better than the state-of-art results with similar settings. This work is the first investigation of EEG-based MWL evaluation with the persistent homology analysis of multivariate time series. The proposed topological features are effective and robust brain states' indicators, providing an alternative feature in designing novel brain–computer interface systems.

Abstract:Tasks with high mental workload often involve higher cognitive functions of the human brain and complex information flow involving multiple brain regions. However, the dynamics of functional connectivity between brain regions during high mental workload have not been well-studied. We use an analysis approach designed to find repeating network states from gamma-band phase locking value networks built from electroencephalograph data collected while participants engaged in tasks with different levels of mental workload. First, we define network states as results of clustering based on the closeness centrality node-level network metric. Second, we found that the transition between network states is not completely random. And, we found significant differences in network state statistics between low and high mental workload. Third, we found significant correlation between features calculated from the network state sequence and behavioral performance. Finally, we use dynamic network features as input to a support vector machine classifier and obtain cross-participant average decoding accuracy of 69.6%. Our methods provide a new perspective for analyzing the dynamics of electroencephalograph signals and have potential application to the decoding of mental workload level.

Abstract:While the term task load (TL) refers to external task demands, the amount of work, or the number of tasks to be performed, mental workload (MWL) refers to the individual's effort, mental capacity, or cognitive resources utilized while performing a task. MWL in multitasking scenarios is often closely linked with the quantity of tasks a person is handling within a given timeframe. In this study, we challenge this hypothesis from the perspective of electroencephalography (EEG) using a deep learning approach. We conducted an EEG experiment with 50 participants performing NASA Multi-Attribute Task Battery II (MATB-II) under 4 different task load levels. We designed a convolutional neural network (CNN) to help with two distinct classification tasks. In one setting, the CNN was used to classify EEG segments based on their task load level. In another setting, the same CNN architecture was trained again to detect the presence of individual MATB-II subtasks. Results show that, while the model successfully learns to detect whether a particular subtask is active in a given segment (i.e., to differentiate between different subtasks-related EEG patterns), it struggles to differentiate between the two highest levels of task load (i.e., to distinguish MWL-related EEG patterns). We speculate that the challenge comes from two factors: first, the experiment was designed in a way that these two highest levels differed only in the quantity of work within a given timeframe; and second, the participants' effective adaptation to increased task demands, as evidenced by low error rates. Consequently, this indicates that under such conditions in multitasking, EEG may not reflect distinct enough patterns to differentiate higher levels of task load.

Abstract:Mental workload (MWL) can affect human performance and is considered critical in the design and evaluation of complex human-machine systems. While numerous physiological measures are used to assess MWL, there appears no consensus on their validity as effective agents of MWL. This study was conducted to provide a comprehensive understanding of the use of physiological measures of MWL and to synthesize empirical evidence on the validity of the measures to discriminate changes in MWL. A systematical literature search was conducted with four electronic databases for empirical studies measuring MWL with physiological measures. Ninety-one studies were included for analysis. We identified 78 physiological measures, which were distributed in cardiovascular, eye movement, electroencephalogram (EEG), respiration, electromyogram (EMG) and skin categories. Cardiovascular, eye movement and EEG measures were the most widely used across varied research domains, with 76%, 66%, and 71% of times reported a significant association with MWL, respectively. While most physiological measures were found to be able to discriminate changes in MWL, they were not universally valid in all task scenarios. The use of physiological measures and their validity for MWL assessment also varied across different research domains. Our study offers insights into the understanding and selection of appropriate physiological measures for MWL assessment in varied human-machine systems.

EEG-Based Mental Workload Assessment in a Simulated Flight Task Using Single-Channel Brain Rhythm Sequence

Abstract:In real-world scenarios, quantitative assessment of mental workload level (MWL) is crucial for preventing performance degradation. Although prior research has explored the feasibility of EEG-based MWL assessment, the widely employed training-testing classification approach using multichannel EEG features limits its practical applications. Here, we introduced an analysis framework to explore the feasibility of detecting multiple MWLs by utilizing brain rhythm sequence (BRS) from the optimal single EEG channel. EEG data were collected from 32 participants undergoing a simulated flight task with three MWLs and two interfaces [i.e., computer screen (CS); virtual reality (VR)]. At an individual level, the BRS of each channel was estimated and compared with the template BRS that was obtained from a pre-defined 12-s window at each MWL. The optimal channel was determined individually as that with the highest similarity between the BRSs and the template BRS, whereas the accuracy was estimated as the ratio between the number of correctly identified BRSs and the total number. The proposed framework achieved a satisfactory classification accuracy above 70% from three MWLs (i.e., CS: 71.46% ± 11.83%, VR: 73.07% ± 11.47%) through averaging the performance of subject-dependent optimal channel. By further analysis of the spatiospectral patterns of the BRS, we revealed that delta and alpha bands residing in the frontal, temporal, and central areas played a key role in assessing MWL. Moreover, distinct spatio-spectral patterns were observed between the two interfaces, indicating the underlying complex neural mechanisms. Overall, our results represent a promising avenue for the development of practical lightweight detection systems that may benefit real-world operators whose performance is prone to overload/underload.

Abstract:Objective. Electroencephalogram (EEG) is an objective reflection of the brain activities, which provides potential possibilities for brain state estimation based on EEG characteristics. However, how to mine the effective EEG characteristics is still a distressing problem in brain state monitoring. Approach. The phase-scrambled method was used to generate images with different noise levels. Images were encoded into a rapid serial visual presentation paradigm. N-back working memory method was employed to induce and assess fatigue state. The irregular-resampling auto-spectral analysis method was adopted to extract and parameterize (exponent and offset) the characteristics of EEG fractal components, which were analyzed in the four dimensions: fatigue, sustained attention, visual noise and experimental tasks. Main results. The degree of fatigue and visual noise level had positive effects on exponent and offset in the prefrontal lobe, and the ability of sustained attention negatively affected exponent and offset. Compared with visual stimuli task, rest task induced even larger values of exponent and offset and statistically significant in the most cerebral cortex. In addition, the steady-state visual evoked potential amplitudes were negatively and positively affected by the degree of fatigue and noise levels, respectively. Significance. The conclusions of this study provide insights into the relationship between brain states and EEG characteristics. In addition, this study has the potential to provide objective methods for brain states monitoring and EEG modeling.
EEG microstate features according to performance on a mental arithmetic task

Abstract:In this study, we hypothesized that task performance could be evaluated applying EEG microstate to mental arithmetic task. This pilot study also aimed at evaluating the efficacy of microstates as novel features to discriminate task performance. Thirty-six subjects were divided into good and poor performers, depending on how well they performed the task. Microstate features were derived from EEG recordings during resting and task states. In the good performers, there was a decrease in type C and an increase in type D features during the task compared to the resting state. Mean duration and occurrence decreased and increased, respectively. In the poor performers, occurrence of type D feature, mean duration and occurrence showed greater changes. We investigated whether microstate features were suitable for task performance classification and eleven features including four archetypes were selected by recursive feature elimination (RFE). The model that implemented them showed the highest classification performance for differentiating between groups. Our pilot findings showed that the highest mean Area Under Curve (AUC) was 0.831. This study is the first to apply EEG microstate features to specific cognitive tasks in healthy subjects, suggesting that EEG microstate features can reflect task achievement.
Reliability and Individual Specificity of EEG Microstate Characteristics

Abstract:Electroencephalography (EEG) microstates (MSs) are defined as quasi-stable topographies that represent global coherent activation. Alternations in EEG MSs have been reported in numerous neuropsychiatric disorders. Transferring the results of these studies into clinical practice requires not only high reliability but also sufficient individual specificity. Nevertheless, whether the amount of data used in microstate analysis influences reliability and how much individual information is provided by EEG MSs are unclear. In the current study, we aimed to assess the within-subject consistency and between-subject differences in the characteristics of EEG MSs. Two sets of eyes-closed resting-state EEG recordings were collected from 54 young, healthy participants on two consecutive days. The Raven Advanced Progressive Matrices test was conducted to assess general fluid intelligence (gF). We obtained four MSs (labeled A, B, C and D) through EEG microstate analysis. EEG MS characteristics including traditional features (the global explained variances, mean durations, coverages, occurrences and transition probabilities), the Hurst exponents and temporal dynamic features (the autocorrelation functions and the partial autocorrelation functions) were calculated and evaluated. The data with a duration greater than 2 min showed moderate to high reliability and individual specificity. The mean duration and coverage of MS C were significantly correlated with the gF score. The dynamic features showed a higher identification accuracy and were more significantly correlated with gF than the traditional MS features. These findings reveal that EEG microstate characteristics are reliably unique in single subjects and possess abundant inter-individual variability.
Comparative analysis of multifaceted neural effects associated with varying endogenous cognitive load

Abstract:Contemporary neuroscience has firmly established that mental state variation concurs with changes in neural dynamic activity in a complex way that a one-to-one mapping cannot describe. To explore the scenario of the multifaceted changes in neural dynamics associated with simple mental state variation, we took cognitive load – a common cognitive manipulation in psychology – as a venue to characterize how multiple neural dynamic features are simultaneously altered by the manipulation and how their sensitivity differs. Electroencephalogram was collected from 152 participants performing stimulus-free tasks with different demands. The results show that task demand alters wide-ranging neural dynamic features, including band-specific oscillations across broad frequency bands, scale-free dynamics, and cross-frequency phase-amplitude coupling. The scale-free dynamics outperformed others in indexing cognitive load variation. This study demonstrates a complex relationship between cognitive dynamics and neural dynamics, which points to a necessity to integrate multifaceted neural dynamic features when studying mind-brain relationship in the future.

Assessment of Mental Workload Based on Multi-Physiological Signals

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Mental workload is one of the contributing factors to human errors in road accidents or other potentially adverse incidents. OBJECTIVE: This research probes the effects of mental workload on the electroencephalographic (EEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG) of subjects in visual monitoring tasks, based on which a comprehensive evaluation model for mental workload is established effectively. METHODS: Three degrees of mental workload were obtained by monitoring tasks with different levels of difficulty. 20 healthy subjects were selected to take part in the research. RESULTS: The subjective scores showed a significant increase with the increase of task difficulty, meanwhile the reaction time (RT) increased and the accuracy decreased significantly, which proved the validity of three degrees of mental workload induced. For the EEG parameters, a significant decrease of θ energy was found in Frontal, Parietal and Occipital with the increase of level of mental workload, as well as a significant decrease of α energy in Frontal, Central and Occipital, meanwhile a significant increase of β energy occurred in Frontal and Occipital. There was a significant decrease of α/θ in Occipital, and significant increases of θ/β and (α+β)/θ in Frontal, Central and Occipital, meanwhile (α+θ)/β and WPE decreased significantly in Frontal and Occipital. Among the ECG parameters, it was shown that Mean RR, RMSSD, HF_norm and SampEn decreased significantly with the increase of task difficulty, while LF_norm and LF/HF showed significant increases. These EEG indictors in Occipital and ECG indictors were chosen and constituted a multidimensional original sample. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to extract the principal elements and decreased the dimension of sample space in order to simplify the calculation, based on which an effective classification model with accuracy of 80% was achieved by support vector machine (SVM). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that the proposed algorithm can be applied to mental workload monitoring.
The impact of mental fatigue on brain activity: a comparative study both in resting state and task state using EEG

Abstract:Abstract Background Mental fatigue is usually caused by long-term cognitive activities, mainly manifested as drowsiness, difficulty in concentrating, decreased alertness, disordered thinking, slow reaction, lethargy, reduced work efficiency, error-prone and so on. Mental fatigue has become a widespread sub-health condition, and has a serious impact on the cognitive function of the brain. However, seldom studies investigate the differences of mental fatigue on electrophysiological activity both in resting state and task state at the same time. Here, twenty healthy male participants were recruited to do a consecutive mental arithmetic tasks for mental fatigue induction, and electroencephalogram (EEG) data were collected before and after each tasks. The power and relative power of five EEG rhythms both in resting state and task state were analyzed statistically. Results The results of brain topographies and statistical analysis indicated that mental arithmetic task can successfully induce mental fatigue in the enrolled subjects. The relative power index was more sensitive than the power index in response to mental fatigue, and the relative power for assessing mental fatigue was better in resting state than in task state. Furthermore, we found that it is of great physiological significance to divide alpha frequency band into alpha1 band and alpha2 band in fatigue related studies, and at the same time improve the statistical differences of sub-bands. Conclusions Our current results suggested that the brain activity in mental fatigue state has great differences in resting state and task state, and it is imperative to select the appropriate state in EEG data acquisition and divide alpha band into alpha1 and alpha2 bands in mental fatigue related researches.

The effect of EEG microstate on the characteristics of TMS-EEG

Abstract:Objective Differences in neural states at the time of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) can lead to variations in the effectiveness of TMS stimulation. Strategies that aim to lock neural activity states and improve the precision of stimulation timing in TMS optimization should gradually receive attention. One feasible approach is to utilize microstate locking for TMS stimulation, and understanding the impact of microstates at the time of stimulation on TMS response forms the foundation of this approach. Approach TMS-EEG data were extracted from 21 healthy subjects through experiments. Based on the different microstates at the time of stimulation, the trials were classified into four datasets. TMS-evoked potential (TEP), topographical distribution, and natural frequency, were computed for each dataset to explore the differences in TMS-EEG characteristics across different microstates. Main results The N100 component of microstate C group (−2.376 μV) was significantly higher (p = 0.003) than of microstate D group (−1.739 μV), and the P180 component of microstate D group (2.482 μV) was significantly higher (p = 0.024) than of microstate B group (1.766 μV) and slightly higher (p = 0.058) than of microstate C group (1.863 μV) by calculating the ROI. The topographical distribution of TEP components during microstate C and microstate D still retained the template characteristics of the microstate at the time of stimulation, and the natural frequencies did not differ among the four classical microstates. Significance This study showed the potential for future closed-loop TMS based on microstates and would guiding the development of microstate-based closed-loop TMS techniques.

Abstract:Major depressive disorder (MDD) may be driven by dysfunction in intrinsic dynamic properties of the brain, and EEG microstate is a promising method for analyzing brain dynamics. However, the alterations in EEG microstate is still not entirely clear, and its ability for MDDs detection is worth probing. Moreover, the mechanism behind the neural networks contributing to microstates remains poorly understood in MDDs. Therefore, we applied microstate analysis and Topographic Electrophysiological State Source-imaging (TESS) on EEG data of 27 MDDs and 28 healthy controls (HCs). Compared to HCs, MDDs had apparent increase in microstate C and decrease in microstate D. Furthermore, TESS results showed that the underlying network of microstate C in MDDs overlapped with the anterior cingulate cortex and left insula gyrus, whereas main source of microstate D was in the orbital part of inferior frontal gyrus. The reduced transition probability from C to D in MDDs may reveal an imbalance between the networks of microstates. The microstate parameters as features reached good performance in identifying MDD (89.09% accuracy, 92.86% sensitivity, 85.19% specificity), indicating their potential as biomarkers of depression pathology. Collectively, these results highlight alteration of brain activity patterns and provide new insights into abnormal EEG dynamics in MDDs.

Abstract:The phenomenon of mind wandering (MW), as a family of experiences related to internally directed cognition, heavily influences vigilance evolution. In particular, humans in teleoperations monitoring partially automated fleet before assuming manual control whenever necessary may see their attention drift due to internal sources; as such, it could play an important role in the emergence of out-of-the-loop (OOTL) situations and associated performance problems. To follow, quantify, and mitigate this phenomenon, electroencephalogram (EEG) systems already demonstrated robust results. As MW creates an attentional decoupling, both ERPs and brain oscillations are impacted. However, the factors influencing these markers in complex environments are still not fully understood. In this paper, we specifically addressed the possibility of gradual emergence of attentional decoupling and the differences created by the sensory modality used to convey targets. Eighteen participants were asked to (1) supervise an automated drone performing an obstacle avoidance task (visual task) and (2) respond to infrequent beeps as fast as possible (auditory task). We measured event-related potentials and alpha waves through EEG. We also added a 40-Hz amplitude modulated brown noise to evoke steady-state auditory response (ASSR). Reported MW episodes were categorized between task-related and task-unrelated episodes. We found that N1 ERP component elicited by beeps had lower amplitude during task-unrelated MW, whereas P3 component had higher amplitude during task-related MW, compared with other attentional states. Focusing on parieto-occipital regions, alpha-wave activity was higher during task-unrelated MW compared with others. These results support the decoupling hypothesis for task-unrelated MW but not task-related MW, highlighting possible variations in the “depth” of decoupling depending on MW episodes. Finally, we found no influence of attentional states on ASSR amplitude. We discuss possible reasons explaining why. Results underline both the ability of EEG to track and study MW in laboratory tasks mimicking ecological environments, as well as the complex influence of perceptual decoupling on operators' behavior and, in particular, EEG measures.

Using EEG Signals to Assess Workload during Memory Retrieval in a Real-world Scenario

Abstract:Objective: The Electroencephalogram (EEG) is gaining popularity as a physiological measure for neuroergonomics in human factor studies because it is objective, less prone to bias, and capable of assessing the dynamics of cognitive states. This study investigated the associations between memory workload and EEG during participants' typical office tasks on a single-monitor and dual-monitor arrangement. We expect a higher memory workload for the single-monitor arrangement. Approach: We designed an experiment that mimics the scenario of a subject performing some office work and examined whether the subjects experienced various levels of memory workload in two different office setups: 1) a single-monitor setup and 2) a dual-monitor setup. We used EEG band power, mutual information, and coherence as features to train machine learning models to classify high versus low memory workload states. Main results: The study results showed that these characteristics exhibited significant differences that were consistent across all participants. We also verified the robustness and consistency of these EEG signatures in a different data set collected during a Sternberg task in a prior study. Significance: The study found the EEG correlates of memory workload across individuals, demonstrating the effectiveness of using EEG analysis in conducting real-world neuroergonomic studies.

The Functional Aspects of Resting EEG Microstates: A Systematic Review

Abstract:A growing body of clinical and cognitive neuroscience studies have adapted a broadband EEG microstate approach to evaluate the electrical activity of large-scale cortical networks. However, the functional aspects of these microstates have not yet been systematically reviewed. Here, we present an overview of the existing literature and systematize the results to provide hints on the functional role of electrical brain microstates. Studies that evaluated and manipulated the temporal properties of resting-state microstates and utilized questionnaires, task-initiated thoughts, specific tasks before or between EEG session(s), pharmacological interventions, neuromodulation approaches, or localized sources of the extracted microstates were selected. Fifty studies that met the inclusion criteria were included. A new microstate labeling system has been proposed for a comprehensible comparison between the studies, where four classical microstates are referred to as A-D, and the others are labeled by the frequency of their appearance. Microstate A was associated with both auditory and visual processing and links to subjects' arousal/arousability. Microstate B showed associations with visual processing related to self, self-visualization, and autobiographical memory. Microstate C was related to processing personally significant information, self-reflection, and self-referential internal mentation rather than autonomic information processing. In contrast, microstate E was related to processing interoceptive and emotional information and to the salience network. Microstate D was associated with executive functioning. Microstate F is suggested to be a part of the Default Mode Network and plays a role in personally significant information processing, mental simulations, and theory of mind. Microstate G is potentially linked to the somatosensory network.
Cognitive Load During Multitasking Can Be Accurately Assessed Based on Single Channel Electroencephalography Using Graph Methods

Abstract:Mental workload has been widely estimated based on electroencephalography (EEG) in the frequency domain. However, simple frequency features are not entirely accurate indicators of the cognitive load because surface EEG signals are weak, nonstationary and randomness. We hypothesize that graph methods, which analyse the relationship between each point and other points of the EEG signals, may provide a more precise identification of the mental load. To investigate this hypothesis, we aim to identify the optimum graph features from 14 channel EEG recordings (sampling rate = 128 Hz) in order to detect the high cognitive load related to multitasking. Three graph features: mean degree $overline {d}$ , clustering coefficient $overline {c}$ , and degree distribution $p(k)$ , are extracted from 48 subjects EEG records. Each experimental subject conducts two tasks: without tasks and with a simultaneous capacity task, respectively. After the experiment is completed, the feeling of the subject with the cognitive load tags in three types: low load, medium load, and heavy load. The optimal features of these three levels of the subject sensation and two types of cognitive load in different tasks are selected on the basis of statistical analysis. Then all graph features are forwarded into a support vector machine (SVM) and a decision tree to conduct objective scoring classification and a three subjective rating classification, respectively. Based on the present results,channels O2, T8, FC6, F8, and AF4 are considered optimal for a more efficiently estimation of the cognitive load. $overline {c}$ associated with F8 and T8 during low cognitive load is significantly lower than th-se associated with high cognitive load (p < 0.001). Using three graph features, the accuracy of identifying two types of mental load is 89.6%. Current findings suggest that the mental workload associated with multi-tasks can be accurately assessed using the graph approaches to EEG data.
