Abstract:Biological denitrification is the most economical and effective way to meet the requirements of standard discharge of urban domestic sewage. However, the reaction mechanism of nitrogen (N) and oxygen (O) and the measurable total nitrogen loss cannot be accurately and quantitatively analyzed during the denitrification process. The new anaerobic ammonia oxidation (Anammox) technology makes the migration and conversion of N and O in the system more complex, and the mechanism of biological transformation is still unknown. In this study, the biological nitrogen removal system was divided into shortcut nitrification, full-range nitrification, shortcut denitrification, nitrous oxide (N 2 O) pathway distribution, and new Anammox technology. The reaction process was analyzed using the N and O dual isotope method to understand the reaction mechanism, and the theoretical technology was summarized in detail, combined with a mathematical model to explain the migration and transformation of N and O in the reaction system, and coupled with other isotope techniques (site preference (SP), C and S isotopes) to comprehensively describe the biological denitrification process. The insights gained in this study provide a reliable theoretical basis and analytical means for understanding the material changes in the actual biological wastewater treatment process. Additionally, the challenges and opportunities of using dual isotope technology to reveal the denitrification process are discussed.

A family with massive acute vitamin D intoxication

Abstract:Acute massive vitamin D overdosage occurred in a family after eating food cooked in a nut oil containing 5 million units of vitamin D3/ml. The plasma vitamin D was 55 and 60 i.u./ml in the father and mother respectively, and 9·6 i.u./ml in their 11-month-old infant (normal range, 0-1·6 i.u./ml). All the family presented with symptoms of hypercalcaemia and the infant responded quickly to prednisone. After steroids had failed to control the hypercalcaemia in the parents, neutral phosphate was successful, although necessary for 9 months. Before phosphate therapy it was shown that both parents were in strongly negative calcium balance, indicating that the vitamin D was mobilizing calcium from bone. Eleven years later all 3 patients are well but a renal biopsy in one of them shows persistent nephrocalcinosis.

Abstract:The realization of low-carbon and energy-efficient partial nitrification (PN) under mainstream conditions continues to face serious challenges due to the complex symbiotic and competitive relationships between various bacteria and the stressful energy crisis. The microaerobic condition could provide a significant reduction in aeration and thus energy savings. This study investigated the effect of different dissolved oxygen (DO) enrichment culture conditions on the establishment of partial nitrification under subsequent microaerobic conditions. The sludge was cultured using two sequencing batch reactors (SBR) with low DO (R1) and high DO (R2) concentrations during the enrichment culture phase. After enrichment culture, a traditional and low-energy combination strategy was used to achieve inhibition of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) and washing out: intermittent aeration and low sludge retention time (SRT). At the end of the experiment, the disparity in activity between ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and NOB was much more pronounced in R1 compared to R2. The final average nitrite accumulation rate (NAR) for R1 and R2 were 82.13 % and 44.79 % from day 181 to 210, respectively. The abundance of Nitrosomonas within R1 and R2 on day 210 were 20.25 % and 10.96 %, and the abundance of Nitrospira were 0.21 % and 0.70 %, respectively. This suggests that enrichment culture conditions for low DO concentrations contribute to the establishment of PN in subsequent combined strategies. Additionally, this study investigated changes in the physicochemical characteristics, kinetic parameters, and composition and content of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) during long term operation to demonstrate the feasibility of the combined strategy.

Development and Validation of a Fluoroimmunoassay for Urinary Normetanephrine

Abstract:The development of a separation fluoriommunoassay for urinary normetanephrine is described. Antiserum specific to normetanephrine was coupled, using cyanogen bromide, to magnetizable cellulose; and fluorescein labelled normetanephrine was synthesized from fluoresceinthiocarbamylethylene diamine and a previously described normetanephrine derivative. Using these reagents it was possible to construct a reproducible standard curve, covering a wide range of concentrations, and to accurately measure the concentration of this metabolite in acid-hydrolysed urine samples. Cross-reactivities of structurally similar compounds were low and the fluoroimmunoassay showed good correlation with an established gas-chromatographic assay. The procedure is rapid; it is possible to accurately determine the normetanephrine concentration of urine samples approximately 2 h after hydrolysis, resulting in an overall assay time of approximately 4 h. This is the first report of a non-isotopic immunoassay for normetanephrine.

Abstract:This study verified the feasibility of simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox, denitrification and fermentation process under intermittent aeration in a single reactor, and explored the impact of dissolved oxygen (DO) on the synergy between fermentation and nitrogen removal. An advanced nitrogen removal efficiency of 92.8 % and a low observed sludge yield of 0.0268–0.1474 kgMLSS/kgCOD were achieved. In-situ test showed that nitrate and ammonium decreased synchronously in the absence of organic matter, indicating the possibility of simultaneous partial denitrification, anammox and fermentation. Additionally, the abundance of functional genes for acetate production was 66,894 hits, while the key genes relevant to methanogenesis were only 348 hits, which suggested that fermentation might stop at the acid-producing stage and promote partial denitrification-anammox reaction, achieving simultaneous sludge reduction and advanced nitrogen removal performance. When DO increased from 0.1–0.3 to 0.4–0.6 mg/L, the nitrogen removal efficiency was increased (63.9 %→92.8 %) while sludge reduction was negatively affected.

Abstract:Partial nitrification to nitrite is technically feasible and economically favourable, especially when wastewaters contained high ammonium concentrations or low C/N ratios. Partial nitrification can be obtained by selectively inhibiting nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) through appropriate regulation of the pH, temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) concentrations. The effect of pH, DO levels and temperature on ammonia oxidation rate and nitrite accumulation was investigated in order to determine the optimal conditions for partial nitrification of synthetic wastewater with high ammonia concentration. The experiments performed at low DO levels to lower the total oxygen needed in the nitrification step, which means great saving in aeration. During the start-up stage pH and DO were set at 7.0–7.4 and 0.5mg/l, respectively. The reactor was operated until complete partial nitrification was achieved. The effect of pH, DO on partial nitrification was studied, as pH was kept at 6.5, 7.5, 8.5, 9.5 and DO at 0.5±0.2, 1.5±0.2 and 2.5±0.2mg/l, and temperature at 30°C. The influence of temperature on ka value was studied by keeping pH=7.5, DO=1.5mg/l and temperature was controlled at 12, 20 and 30°C, respectively. The results showed that partial nitrification to nitrite was steadily obtained and the optimal operational parameters were pH=7.5, DO=1.5mg/l, T=30°C based on ammonia oxidation rate and nitrite accumulation rate. The maximum ka was achieved and to be 115.1×10−3mg NH4+–N(mg VSSh)−1 under this condition.

Abstract:The nitritation step is the fundament for the biological nitrogen removal regardless of the traditional nitrification and denitrification process, the nitrite shunt process or the anammox process. Thus, exploring the effective nitritation performance is an important aspect of biological nitrogen removal. This study explored the upper limit of nitritation rate by increasing hydraulic residence time with the well-mixed and continuous granular sludge-type reactor characterized with low complexity and easy operation. The results showed that with the nitrogen loading rate of 1.0 kg/m 3 /d, the nitrite production rate could reach up to 0.65 kg/m 3 /d with the nitrite production efficiency of 63.49%, which is remarkable compared to that in the previously similar research. The microbial analysis indicated that ammonia-oxidizing bacteria was successfully enriched (13.27%) and genus Nitrosomonas was the dominant bacteria type. Besides, the activity of ammonium oxidizing bacteria in the continuous flow reactor was higher than that of other reactor types. The growth of vorticella on the sludge was also found in the reactor. The test of specific sludge activity and the microbe analysis both indicated that the nitrite-oxidizing bacteria was well inhibited during the whole experiment, which indicated the strategy of simply adjusting the dissolved oxygen is effective for running of nitritation process. The phosphorus removal performance was also achieved with a removal efficiency of 23.53%. The functional composition of the microbial community in the samples was predicted and finally transformation mechanism of nitrogen in sludge was drawn. In sum, this study indicated the superior performance of the granule sludge-type nitritation process and give a reference for the application of biological nitrogen removal technology.

Abstract:Dissolved oxygen (DO) is an important parameter for partial nitritation-anammox process but previously not evaluated for the treatment of digested biosolid thickening lagoon supernatant. Using intermittent aeration we investigated nitrogen removal from such supernatant in an integrated fixed film activated sludge (IFAS) process operated under a variety of hydraulic retention times (1.2-2.5 days). The overall nitrogen removal rate (NRR) was significantly increased (P < 0.01) from 0.26 ± 0.01 kg N m-3 d-1 at HRT of 2.5 days to 0.50 ± 0.01 kg N m-3 d-1 at HRT of 1.2 day. Higher nitrogen loading rates needed higher DO concentrations in order to cope with the increased oxygen demand by ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AOB). Enhancing the DO concentration from 0.18 mg L-1 to 0.35 mg L-1 improved AOB activity. However, when the bulk liquid DO was in the range of 0.28-0.35 mg L-1, anammox activity inhibition was observed associated with a significant free nitrous acid (FNA) accumulation (21.70 ± 4.10 μg L-1). Batch studies confirmed the inhibition of anammox activity under high DO conditions (0.28-0.35 mg L-1). Aeration strategies, other than increasing the DO set points, should be investigated in order to be able to work at high nitrogen loading rates without compromising anammox activity.

Abstract:Sequencing batch reactors fed with low ammonium strength synthetic wastewater under C/N ratios of 0.5, 1.5, and 3.0 were used to investigate the transition from full to partial nitrification. Two strategies for establishing partial nitrification, aeration duration control and process parameter control, were compared. The effect of C/N ratio on nitrite accumulation was also evaluated. Results showed that partial nitrification established by controlling aeration duration presented better performance with higher nitrite accumulation. An increase of C/N ratio helped nitrite accumulation; however, non-filamentous bulking of sludge happened at high C/N ratio. Based on mass balances for nitrogen, results for nitrogen during full and partial nitrification were distinct from one another. For low C/N ratio, during full nitrification, almost 100% of NH(4+)-N was oxidized to NO(3-)-N without nitrogen loss; however, nitrogen loss increased obviously during partial nitrification, which indicated that dissolved oxygen concentration and C/N ratio influenced nitrogen loss significantly during nitrification.
Revealing Dissolved Organic Nitrogen Transformation and Microbial Evolution at Microscale in a Solid Carbon Source-Coordinated Simultaneous Partial Nitrification, Anammox, and Denitrification Bioreactor

Abstract:Denitrification coupled with anammox is an effective approach to improve total nitrogen removal from wastewater, especially by reducing the nitrate produced by anammox. Nevertheless, the behavior of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) is commonly ignored in this process. In the present study, poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), an alternative solid carbon source, was coupled with simultaneous partial nitrification, anammox, and denitrification (SNAD) to achieve complete nitrogen removal in a single reactor. After 90 days of continuous operation, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) removal efficiencies were 80.7 +/- 1.0% without PBS and 97.4 +/- 3.5% with PBS. Correspondingly, the effluent DON was reduced from 1.0 to 0.6 mg/L when PBS was provided. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry revealed that DON molecules with large, unsaturated and aromatic structures were preferentially transformed in SNAD when PBS was provided. Microbial analysis indicated that Candidatus_Jettenia (22.0%-17.7%) and Nitrosomonas (3.8%- 2.6%) were the predominant functional bacteria for anammox and nitrification, regardless of whether PBS was provided or not. Meanwhile, increased abundances of denitrifying bacteria, such as Denitratisoma (2.9%-4.0%) and Thauera (2.2%-3.3%), were observed and assumed to improve nitrate reduction. The results provide a practical alternative for nitrogen removal by coupling solid denitrification with anammox, and also reveals novel insights about DON characteristics at the molecular level.
Unignorable Enzyme-Specific Isotope Fractionation for Nitrate Source Identification in Aquatic Ecosystem.

Abstract:Nitrate contamination in aquatic systems is a widespread problem across the world. The isotopic composition (δ15N, δ18O) of nitrate and their isotope effect (15ε, 18ε) can facilitate the identification of the source and transformation of nitrate. Although previous researches claimed the isotope fractionations may change the original δ15N/δ18O values and further bias identification of nitrate sources, isotope effect was often ignored due to its complexity. To fill the gap between the understanding and application, it is crucial to develop a deep understanding of isotopic fractionation based on available evidence. In this regard, this study summarized the available methods to determine isotope effects, thereby systematically comparing the magnitude of isotope effects (15ε and 18ε) in nitrification, denitrification and anammox. We found that the enzymatic reaction plays the key role in isotope fractionations, which is significantly affected by the difference in the affinity, substrate channel properties and redox potential of active site. Due to the overlapping of microbial processes and accumulation of uncertainties, the significant isotope effects at small scales inevitably decrease in large-scale ecosystems. However, the proportionality of N and O isotope fractionation (δ18O/δ15N; 18ε/15ε) associated with nitrate reduction generally follows enzyme-specific proportionalities (i.e., Nar, 0.95; Nap, 0.57; eukNR, 0.98) in aquatic ecosystems, providing enzyme-specific constant factors for the identification of nitrate transformation. With these results, this study finally discussed feasible source portioning methods when considering the isotope effect and aimed to improve the accuracy in nitrate source identification.
Enhanced aerobic denitrifiers in wastewater treatment: Optimization of aeration mode and mechanistic study

Abstract:The discovery of aerobic denitrification has subverted traditional denitrification, and oxygen is one of the most critical factors affecting aerobic denitrification. Therefore, it is significant to study the effect of aeration on aerobic denitrifiers' enrichment and enhanced denitrification. In this study, under two different aeration modes (R1: intermittent aeration, R2: continuous aeration), two lab-scale sequencing batch reactors (SBR) were operated for 60 days. On day 21, the difference in nitrogen removal efficiency between R1 (89.6 %) and R2 (31.6 %) was the largest. R1 and R2 entered the stable high nitrogen removal efficiency stage on days 24 and 32, respectively. In this stage, the average NRE of R1 (97%) was still higher than that of R2 (91%). Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) and 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed the enrichment of aerobic denitrifiers in two bioreactors (R1: 24.94 %, R2: 22.97 %). The absolute abundance of the napA gene detected in R1 (4.11 × 10 8 copies/g sludge) was 4.15 times that of R2 (9.9 × 10 6 copies/g sludge). This will help the expression of enzyme activity and enhance the competitiveness of aerobic denitrifiers. In addition, the ETSA of R1 (0.019 μg O2/(g·min)) was significantly higher than that of R2 (0.016 μg O2/(g·min)) on day 60. The total abundance of electron transfer-related complex genes in R1 (1.478 %) was higher than that in R2 (1.382 %). These results suggest intermittent aeration can improve nitrogen removal efficiency by increasing electron utilization and transfer efficiency for aerobic denitrification. These findings may facilitate the development of biotechnologies based on aerobic denitrifiers for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to evaluate the conversion of full nitritation to partial nitrification processes by altering the influent ammonium concentration in a sequencing batch reactor at ambient temperature. After 150 days' operation, full nitritation and partial nitrification processes were successfully achieved when the influent NH4-N concentrations up to 400 and 720 mg/L, respectively. Meanwhile, sludge volumetric index (SVI) gradually decreased from 127.4 to 63.4 mL/g, while the average size of sludge improved from 29.5 to 195.6 mu m by the strategy of reducing settling time. Ammonium-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) were the dominant nitrifying bacteria according to the fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis. Free ammonia (FA) and free nitrous acid (FNA) were the potential compounds for inhibiting the activity of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB). The obtained results may help to promote the development of new biological nitrogen removal processes in engineering, especially in relation to nitrogenrich wastewaters. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. Feasibility of double nitrite supply through partial nitrification and partial denitrification driven by sludge fermentation

Abstract:Challenges in obtaining stable nitrite have impeded the use of anammox in municipal wastewater treatment. This study explored the feasibility of using sludge fermentation products as carbon source and selective nitrification inhibitor to supply nitrite via partial nitrification (PN) and partial denitrification (PD). PD was initiated within 15 days, achieving nitrite transformation rate of over 90 % with a C/N ratio of 3 and a reaction time of 0.75 h. The dominant genus, Romboutsia, increased in relative abundance from 4.1 to 35 %. Organic acids in sludge fermentation products, like acetate (200 mg/L) and propionate (400 mg/L), selectively suppressed nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) more than ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), leading to PN. Combining anaerobic exposure with sludge fermentation products addition achieved PN with over 80.0 % nitrite accumulation. AOB increased tenfold in the long term, significantly outpacing NOB growth. This strategy simplifies difficulty of anammox application and shows broad application potential in municipal wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Partial nitrification has gained broad interests in the biological nitrogen removal (BNR) from wastewater, since it alleviates carbon limitation issues and acts as a shortcut nitrogen removal system combined with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Anammox) process. The occurrence and maintenance of partial nitrification relies on various conditions, which favor ammonium oxidizing bacteria (AOB) but inhibit or limit nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB). The studies of the AOB and NOB activities have been conducted by state-of-the-art molecular techniques, such as Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), Quantitative PCR, denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), Fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) technique, Terminal Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism (T-RFLP), Live/Dead BacLight, and quinone profile. Furthermore, control strategies for obtaining partial nitrification are mainly focused on the pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen concentration, real-time aeration control, sludge retention time, substrate concentration, alternating anoxic and aerobic operation, inhibitor and ultrasonic treatment. Existing problems and further perspectives for the scale-up of partial nitrification are also proposed and suggested.

Abstract:Nitritation/denitritation (Nit/DNit) is widely applied as a cost-effective nitrogen reduction strategy for ammonia rich wastewater treatment compared to conventional nitrification/denitrification processes. However, Nit/DNit processes have often been reported to lead to high nitrous oxide (N2O) emission. Here, N2O emissions were effectively suppressed in a single stage Nit/DNit sequencing batch reactor (SBR) treating ammonia rich digester sludge thickening lagoon supernatant at room temperature (20 °C). The impacts of alternating frequencies of aerobic/anoxic phases on reactor performance and N2O emissions were investigated. With the same hydraulic retention time (HRT), N2O production from 2 subcycles of aerobic/anoxic phases was 9.73% of the removed total inorganic nitrogen (TIN), whereas 14 subcycles of aerobic/anoxic phases reduced the N2O production to 1.53% of the removed TIN. Aerobic phases accounted for > 83% of the total N2O emission, whereas anoxic phases accounted for < 17% of the total N2O emission throughout the operation. Aerobic N2O emissions correlated positively with the nitrite accumulated, and anoxic N2O emissions correlated negatively with the nosZ/(nirK+nirS) gene ratio. Changes in the phase alternation frequency did not negatively impact the TIN removal efficiency, which was maintained at 98% throughout the reactor operation. Mechanisms associated with N2O emission suppression were also discussed in the present study.

Abstract:The main challenge for achieving the simultaneous nitritation, anammox and denitrification (SNAD) process is to optimize the concentrations of nitrite and dissolved oxygen (DO). This study explored the performance of SNAD biofilm reactor under three operational strategies. At Stage 1, 2 and 3, the average concentrations of DO were 0.7, 2.7 and 5.2 mg/L, respectively. The peak concentrations of NO2--N in the sequencing batch reactor (SBR) cycle were 5.3, 6.0 and 2.7 mg/L, respectively. The average removal rates of total inorganic nitrogen (TIN) were 0.30, 0.42 and 0.22 kg N/m3/d, respectively. Protein (PN) was the dominant extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) content on the SNAD biofilm. The PN concentration remained stable while the polysaccharide (PS) concentration changed rapidly under different operational strategies. High-throughput sequencing analysis indicated that high DO and long aeration period condition could lead to a slight decrease in the abundances of denitrifying bacteria and anammox bacteria.

Abstract:This study developed an innovative process for the treatment of low-ammonium wastewater in a single-stage bioreactor over 250 days. Partial nitritation-anammox and partial denitritation-anammox (PN/A-PDN/A) processes were combined under aerobic/anoxic operation, and a high nitrogen removal efficiency (94.6%) was obtained at a nitrogen removal rate of 0.54 kg N m–3 d–1 and a chemical oxygen demand to total inorganic nitrogen (COD/TIN) ratio of 0.28. Mass balance analysis identified anammox as the dominant nitrogen removal pathway, achieving 88.3% nitrogen loss. The abundance of anammox bacteria and their bioactivity rapidly increased and were effectively maintained, as indicated by qPCR and bioactivity tests. The PN/A-PDN/A process provided two pathways of nitrite production for anammox, which favored the enrichment of anammox bacteria and stable processing. In addition, the enrichment of anammox bacteria was promoted by selective floc discharge since anammox bacteria are mainly located in granules (relative abundance of 29.64 ± 7.89%). Competitive organisms (including heterotrophic bacteria and nitrite oxidizing bacteria), enriched in flocs, were washed out. Abstract:This study focused on the horizontal distribution of nitrogen removal characteristics of biofilm and sludge floc in anaerobic/anoxic/oxic (AAO) process. Fixed carriers were placed in a full-scale AAO system, and the nitrogen removal kinetics associated with microbial community between biofilm and sludge floc along the process were investigated. The results showed sludge floc exhibits superior nitrification capability, particularly around the middle of aerobic tank with specific NH 4 + -N (NO 2 − -N) oxidation rates of 1.67 mg·g −1 ·h −1 -3.46 mg·g −1 ·h −1 (1.32 mg·g −1 ·h −1 -1.56 mg·g −1 ·h −1 ). The biofilm exhibits superior denitrification ability, particularly in anoxic and middle of aerobic tank with specific NO 3 − -N (NO 2 − -N) reduction rates of 4.34 mg·g −1 ·h −1 -10.16 mg·g −1 ·h −1 (2.95 mg·g −1 ·h −1 -4.93 mg·g −1 ·h −1 ). In aerobic tank, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) of sludge floc was positively correlated with specific oxidation rates of NH 4 + -N ( R = 0.93) and NO 2 − -N ( R = 0.89), but EPS of biofilm was negatively correlated with specific NH 4 + -N oxidation rate ( R = -0.68). Nitrospira was the dominant nitrifying bacteria in sludge floc which distributed evenly in the AAO process with the relative abundance of 4.28 %–5.95 %, while in biofilm it mainly enriched in anoxic (2.33 %–3.27 %) and aerobic tank (1.04 %–1.89 %). Dechloromonas and Thauera were main denitrifying bacteria in sludge floc (2.77 % ± 0.61 % and 1.80 % ± 0.25 %), while Saccharibacteria was dominant denitrifying bacteria in biofilm (4.44 % ± 1.51 %). Candidatus Kuenenia was Anammox bacteria in both sludge floc (0.01 % ± 0.01 %) and biofilm (0.02 % ± 0.01 %). The nitrogen removal potential in each tank was evaluated through comparing the differences between actual concentrations of NH 4 + -N, NO 2 − -N, NO 3 − -N and the associated half-saturation constants, and the strategy of specifically installing fixed carriers to improve nitrogen removal was proposed.

Abstract:A partial-denitrification coupling with anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) process (PD/A) in a continuous-flow anoxic/oxic (A/O) biofilm reactor was developed to treat carbon-limited domestic wastewater (ammonia (NH4+-N) of 55 mg/L and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 148 mg/L in average) for about 200 days operation. Satisfactory NH4+-N oxidation efficiency above 95% was achieved with rapid biofilm formation in the aerobic zone. Notably, nitrite (NO2−-N) accumulation was observed in the anoxic zone, mainly due to the insufficient electron donor for complete nitrate (NO3−-N) reduction. The nitrate-to-nitrite transformation ratio (NTR) achieved was as high as 64.4%. After the inoculation of anammox-enriched sludge to anoxic zones, total nitrogen (TN) removal was significantly improved from 37.3% to 78.0%. Anammox bacteria were effectively retained in anoxic biofilm utilizing NO2−-N produced via the PD approach and NH4+-N in domestic wastewater, with the relative abundance of 5.83% for stable operation. Anammox pathway contributed to TN removal by a high level of 38%. Overall, this study provided a promising method for mainstream nitrogen removal with low energy consumption and organic carbon demand.
