Abstract:Objectives The increase in the aged population, associated with various diseases and problems that threaten physical and mental health, as well as the social and economic developments and changes in individual and family lifestyles, have caused inappropriate emotional responses such as stress, anxiety and depression in the elderly in Iran. The present study aims to determine the relationship of perceived social support with sleep quality and mental health in elderly people referred to health centers in Tehran, Iran. Methods & Materials This is a descriptive-analytical study with a cross-sectional design that was conducted on 420 elderly people referred to health centers affiliated to Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences in Tehran in 2021, who were selected by a multi-stage random sampling method. A demographic form, the pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI), the depression anxiety stress scale-21 (DASS-21), and the multidimensional scale of perceived social support (MSPSS) were used to collect information. Data analysis was done using Pearson’s correlation test and descriptive statistics (frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, skewness, and kurtosis) in SPSS software version 25 and path analysis in EQS software, version 6.4. Results The findings indicated that 54.5% of the elderly had depression, 64% had anxiety, 49.3% had stress, and 91.4% had sleep disorders. A negative and significant correlation was found between perceived social support and mental health components (depression, anxiety, and stress) in the elderly (P<0.001). and also between perceived social support and sleep quality (P<0.001). Conclusion Considering the positive relationship of perceived social support with mental health and sleep quality of the elderly in Tehran, there is a need to pay more attention to their perceived social support.

Abstract:Background: Aging is associated with several health concerns, including sleep problems. Hence, the current study was conducted to determine the factors related to the performance of sleep hygiene behaviors among the elderly in Malair based on the social support theory. Methods: Data for this cross-sectional study were collected from 298 older adults who referred to comprehensive health centers in Malair, Iran, in 2022. Participants were selected by multi-stage random sampling method. Data collection tools included demographic information, social support theory, and sleep hygiene behaviors questionnaires. Data were then analyzed by SPSS software version 18 using independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and linear regression. Results: According to the findings, among sleep hygiene behaviors, light and sound control behaviors to the minimum possible extent during sleep time (71.1%) and proper bedroom temperature control (68.5%) had the highest frequency. Furthermore, regular exercise behaviors such as walking outside homes in the evenings (16.4%) and examining the effect of drugs on sleep (24.8%) were the least frequent performance by the elderly. The results of linear regression analysis showed that instrumental support (β=0.297), informational support (β=0.224), and emotional support (β=0.15) are the best predictors of performing sleep hygiene behaviors. Moreover, the constructs of social support theory explained a 44.2% variance in sleep hygiene behaviors of the elderly. Conclusion: Considering the unfavorable level of some sleep hygiene behaviors among the elderly, it seems necessary to emphasize the importance of performing sleep hygiene behaviors. It is also suggested to pay attention to instrumental, informational, and emotional support when designing educational programs to increase the amount of the performance of these behaviors.
Socio-cognitive Determinants of Healthy Sleep Behaviors Among Iranian Elderly: Application of the Theory of Planned Behavior

Abstract:Background: Sleep quality and quantity disorders are among the most important problems in old age. Healthy sleep behaviors are among the best ways to deal with sleep disorders among the elderly. This study aimed to determine the socio-cognitive determinants predicting healthy sleep behaviors among the elderly who had been referred to the retirement centers in Hamadan, Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed among 288 elderly people who had been referred to the retirement centers in Hamadan, Iran in 2020, and were selected through stratified random sampling. Data were collected online using a self-administered questionnaire with items on demographic characteristics and the theory of planned behavior (TPB) constructs. Data were analyzed by SPSS software (version 16) using Pearson correlation, independent t test, one-way ANOVA, and linear regression tests at the significance level of 0.05. Results: The mean (±standard deviation) age of respondents in this study was 67.2 (±6.3) years. Perceived behavior control (β=0.409), attitude (β=0.251), and subjective norms (β=0.205) were stronger predictors of healthy sleep behavior intention among the elderly, respectively; collectively, they accounted for 28.5% of the variation in sleep health behavior intention. Behavioral intention (β=0.429) and perceived behavioral control (β=0.167) were also predictors of healthy sleep behaviors among the elderly. There was a statistically significant relationship between the educational level and healthy sleep behaviors (P<0.05). Conclusion: It seems that the development and implementation of educational programs based on the TPB for the improvement of attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavior control can play an effective role in promoting healthy sleep behaviors and sleep quality among the elderly.

Abstract:Background and aims: Poor quality of sleep and daily activity in elderly people are associated with many physical and psychological problems that increase disability and need to use health services. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between daily activities and quality of sleep in the elderly people. Methods: This Study was a correlational-descriptive study on390 elderly people in Zanjan in 2013. The sampling was done using a cluster and multistage method. Data were collected via face-to-face interview, using Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and a questionnaire on “activities of daily living” (ADL) and “instrumental activities of daily living” (IADL). Data analysis was performed using descriptive statistic including number, percentage, mean, standard deviation, and inferential statistical tests including Spearman's rank correlation coefficient, independent t-test and one-way analysis of variance. Results: The mean score of ADL and IADL was 11.58±0.81 (score range 0–14) and 11.23±2.93 (score range 0–18), respectively. In addition, 85.7%of the subjects in the study had poor sleep quality and only 14.3% had good sleep quality. The results also indicated no significant relationship between the daily activities and quality of sleep in the elderly, while Instrumental activities had a weak positive and significant correlation with their sleep quality (P≥0.05). Conclusion: Although the elderly in this study have poor sleep quality, they are independent in performing ADL and IADL. Furthermore, there is a weak and direct correlation between sleep quality and instrumental activities of the old people. Improvement of activity in the elderly can improve their quality of sleep.

Abstract:Background & Aims: One of the problems affecting elderly people's quality of life is sleep problems which has an adverse impact on their social, occupational and other activities. This study was conducted aiming to determine the prevalence of poor sleep quality among the elderly in ..., northern Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study is part of the second phase of ... Health and Ageing Project (...HAP) which is a cohort study that has been conducted on all elderly people aged 60 and over in ... city, north of Iran since 2011. The sleep quality and its related factors were assessed through Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI-P) and interviews, respectively. Results: Of the 1675 elderly people, 914 (54.6%) were male and 761 (45.4%) were female, among them 714 (42.6%) had poor sleep quality. The prevalence of poor sleep quality in women and men was 56.9% and 30.7%, respectively (p <0.001). Poor sleep quality was significantly more frequent among unmarried elderly (50.4%) (p = 0.004), ones with lower education level (p<0.001), and individuals who were living alone (51.3%)(p<0.001) and those with more chronic disease (p<0.001), relative to other groups. Logistic regression analysis revealed that sex, (OR = 2.34, 95% CI (2.85-95.95)) and chronic diseases (OR=4.48, 95% CI (2.02-9.93)) had the most important roles poor sleep quality. Conclusion: This study showed relatively high prevalence of poor sleep quality in elderly people, particularly among females. Abstract:Background: Perceived social support (PSS) plays a considerable role in mental health. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (MSPSS) is one of the most widely used scales, leading to much research evidence. The present study investigated its measurement model, equivalence across gender (male and female) and age groups (older patients= above 60 and non-older patients= below 60), and concurrent validity. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted between March and October 2020, on patients hospitalized due to COVID-19 in Tehran, Iran. The scales were administered to 328 COVID-19 patients (54.6% male, aged 21 to 92) from two general hospitals; participants completed MSPSS (including friends, family, and significant others subscales), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI, include sleep latency, subjective sleep quality, habitual sleep efficiency, sleep duration, use of sleep medication, daytime dysfunction, and sleep disturbances subscales), and the Perceived Stress Scale-10 (PSS-10, to assess patients' appraisal of stressful conditions). Results: The MSPSS three-factor structure was confirmed among COVID-19 patients by Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). The results support the MSPSS internal consistency and configural, metric, and scalar invariance across gender and age groups. Nevertheless, small but significant differences were found across ages based on the latent factor mean of the MSPSS from friends, with a lower mean level in older patients. The coefficients of Cronbach's alpha (ranging from.92 to.96), the ordinal theta (ranging from.95 to.98), and Omega (ranging from.93 to.97) suggested high internal consistency of MSPSS. The concurrent validity of MSPSS was evidenced by its significant negative correlation with PSS-10 (τ b = -.13, p <.01) and also subjective sleep quality (τ b = -.22, p <.01), sleep disturbances (τ b = -.26, p <.001), and daytime dysfunction (τ b = -.26, p <.001). Conclusions: The MSPSS was valid and reliable for measuring individuals' perception of social support between males and females and older and non-older COVID-19 patients.

Abstract:Objectives: Older adults are more likely to have poor sleep quality and be socially isolated. The present study examined the potential benefits and disadvantages of social media use (SMU) with respect to sleep quality and perceived social isolation among Iranian late-middle-aged and older adults with focus a on both the mediating and moderating role of psychological distress. Methods: A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 900 older community-dwellers living in Shiraz using a structured questionnaire. Social media use was assessed by estimating the frequency of social networking site visits per week. Data concerning self-rated physical health, chronic medical and mental health conditions, perceived social isolation, sleep quality, and psychological distress were also collected. Multiple linear regression was used to identify independent variables associated with outcomes. Then, mediation and moderation models were used to examine the potential mediating and moderating effects of psychological distress and SMU on their relationships with the study variables. Results: Higher social media use was associated with better sleep quality and less perceived social isolation. Nevertheless, the relationships between SMU and participants' sleep quality and perceived social isolation were largely mediated by their level of psychological distress. Furthermore, SMU had a significant moderating effect in the relationship between the psychological distress and the levels of perceived social isolation, so that participants with higher frequency of SMU per week felt less loneliness. Conclusions: The study findings suggest that SMU has a positive buffering effect regarding late middle-aged and older adults' mental health mainly through moderation of their perceived social isolation. The mediating role of psychological distress in research examining the relationship between SMU and older adults' mental health outcomes should be considered in future research.

Abstract:Introduction: Sleep is one of most essential cycle in a day that has a complex biological pattern. Sleep and sleep disorders have an important role in people's life. Sleep disorders have adverse effect on social performance in addition mental health threat .Prevalence of sleep disorders is increasing specially in young people. Some groups like students have more sleep disorders. This study aimed to assess the relation between mental healths with sleep quality in students. Methods and Materials: In this case-control, dormitories students of kashan university of medical science were studied from 2013 to 2014. We selected 200 students include 100 person with sleep disorder and 100 students without sleep disorder by randomized sampling. Three questionnaires used includes: Demographic information, Pittsburgh and GHQ. All data improved with EPIINFO program and were analyzed by SPSS 16. We used chi-square and t-test for analysis of dependent and independent changeable data and regression methods used to control confounding data. Results: This persons were108 female (54%) and 92 male (46%). 22 person were married, and 177 person were single. Mean age in person with sleep disorder was 22.61, and without sleep disorders was 22.35 without significant difference. Psychological disorders like anxiety, depression and physical health have significant relation with sleep disorders (P 0.05). Suicidal ideation was 35% in people with sleep disorders and 7% without sleep disorders. Ideation of suicidal attempts was 32% in people with sleep disorder and 7% without sleep disorder (P<0.001) Conclusion: Sleep quality have important role in different items of mental health. Pay attention to improve sleep quality of dormitories students, and necessary actions like advice and training of sleep health is important to improve health status.

Abstract:Aging as a major challenge can affect the development and growth of countries all around the world. This study aimed to identify the subgroups of the elderly based on the quality of life (Qol), sleep quality, and common mental disorders and assess the role of demographic characteristics on the membership of participants in each latent class. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 1064 people over the age of 60 years. The sample was selected through cluster sampling in northern Iran. All participants completed six sets of checklists and questionnaires. Data analysis was performed using latent class analysis. Three latent classes were identified; namely, (1) healthy (66.8%), (2) anxious and with poor sleep quality (28.6%), and unhealthy (4.6%). Being Female significantly increased the odds of membership in classes 2 and 3 compared to class 1. Furthermore, living in urban areas increased the odds of belonging to class 2 and class 3 compared to class 1. Illiteracy was also shown to increase the odds of being in class 3 in comparison to class 1. Results from the present indicate that the co-occurrence of health problems in 33.2% of the elderly was observed in various forms. The results of this study can be used in prioritizing health programs for the elderly and emphasizing high-risk groups.

Abstract:Objectives This study aims to assess the effect of music therapy (MT) and sleep hygiene (SH) education on sleep disorders of the elderly in Urmia, Iran. Methods & Materials This is a randomized controlled clinical trial. Participants were 150 older adults referred to health centers in Urmia, Iran. They were divided into three groups of SH+MT, SH, and control using the block randomization method. To measure their sleep quality, the standard Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) was used. The intervention was conducted for two months. Data analysis was conducted in SPSS software, version 21. To know the baseline difference in the qualitative variables among the three groups, chi-square test was used. Kolmogorov Smirnov test was used to check the normality of data distribution and then one-way ANOVA test was used to compare the seven dimensions of PSQI among the three groups. Results The comparison of seven PSQI dimensions showed that subjective sleep quality (F=14.34, P=0.0001), sleep latency (F=10.05, P=0.0001), sleep duration (F=21.91, P=0.0001), habitual sleep efficiency (F=24.98, P=0.0001), sleep disturbances (F=15.37, P=0.0001), use of sleep medication (F=1.840, P=0.04) and daytime drowsiness (F=1.181, P=0.02) were significantly different among the three groups. The combination of SH education and MT improved the sleep quality of participants more than the SH education alone. Conclusion It seems that sleep disorders of the elderly can be reduced by teaching sleep hygiene and listening to favorite music before going to sleep.

Abstract:The quality of sleep changes with age and a reduction in sleep duration is observed in the elderly. Mizaj (temperament) is a fundamental theory in traditional Persian medicine. It is defined as all sides of personality describing a person’s morphological, psychological, and physiological situations. Although the evidence showed that temperament and sleep quality are related, no research has evaluated this issue statistically so far. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the correlation between sleep quality and temperament. This cross-sectional study included 1,359 elderly people (aged 60) in Tabriz, Iran in 2019. An interviewer accomplished the Tabriz Older People Survey (TOPS), Temperament and Sleep Quality Test, and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). A p value less than 0.05 was considered as significant. Our findings indicated that there was a significant relationship between global PSQI and wet temperament (p value = 0.036). In addition, hot-cold temperament was statistically related to demographical items like gender, marital status, and occupational status (p value ≤ 0.05). A similar statistically significant relationship was also seen for wet-dry temperament (p value ≤ 0.05). Moreover, the global PSQI score in female and illiterates subjects and those who lived in detached houses was high, meaning that the sleep quality was poor in these groups. According to our findings, Mizaj affects the quality of sleep in older adults. Also, living conditions of the elderly, such as gender, type of residence, level of education, and job, affect the Mizaj of the elderly people.
Evaluation of the sleep hygiene index and physical activity states of the elderly living in nursing homes

Abstract:The aim: the sleep quality and physical performance play a vital role in older adults’ well-being to maintain good overall health. Therefore, the parameters that have a role in sleep and physical capacity are crucial to achieve a healthy aging outcome. In this study, we aimed at comparing the quality of sleep and physical activity state of the elderly living in 5 nursing homes. Methods: the 181 elderly individuals living in 5 nursing homes were included in this cross-sectional study. Physical activity, sleep hygiene index and demographics were analysed using SPPS 23.0. Results: overall, 68.5 % of the participants were male, and 31.5 % were female. There was no significant correlation between the sleep hygiene scores and physical activity states (p >0.05). Those who were divorced, those who were on at least one type of medication, those who smoked and those with poor perception of health had statistically significant difference in terms of the Sleep Hygiene Index (p<0.05). Conclusion: other than findings of the presented study that influence sleep and physical activity, the many other factors in different geographical areas or cultures could be a reason that is interrelated with sleep quality and physical performance of older adults. In this study, for primary care and family physicians to boost the sleep quality of the elderly, we recommend improving their health perception, quitting smoking, discontinuing unnecessary medications, and increasing their social interactions
Impact of Sleep Disorders and Other Factors on the Quality of Life in General Population: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:The study objective was to assess if insomnia , along with other factors, can impact the physical and mental quality of life (QOL) of the Lebanese general population. This cross-sectional study, conducted between November 2017 and March 2018, enrolled 756 community-dwelling participants. A first linear regression, using the SF-12 PCS score as the dependent variable, showed that having a family history of insomnia problems (β = 1.107, p = 0.026) was significantly associated with higher physical QOL (higher SF-12 PCS score), whereas increased stress (β = 0.048, p = 0.015) was significantly associated with lower physical QOL. A second linear regression, using the SF-12 MCS score as dependent variable, showed that having increased age (β = −0.079, p < 0.001) was significantly associated with lower mental QOL. Despite its cross-sectional design and the modest sample size, this study adds to the evidence that insomnia , along with other factors (including sociodemographic and psychological factors), can have a detrimental impact on both physical and mental QOL of participants.

Combined Effect of Daily Physical Activity and Social Relationships on Sleep Disorder Among Older Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study Based on Data From The Kasama Study

Abstract:Abstract Background: This cross-sectional study investigated whether the daily physical activity of older adults, combined with social relationships, is associated with the risk of sleep disorder. Further, it determined whether a high level of one variable with a low level of the other leads to a significantly lower risk of sleep disorder than low levels of both. Methods: The sample comprised 988 community-dwelling older Japanese adults (mean age: 73.1 ± 5.5 years). The level of daily physical activity and range of social relationships were assessed using the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly and the Lubben Social Network Scale, respectively. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was used to assess sleep disorder. To test linear trends and the combined effect of the two variables, both variable values were divided into tertiles. To test the combined effects, medians were calculated for the respective scores, based on which the participants were categorized into the following groups: (1) inactive with a narrow range of social relationships (n = 307), (2) inactive with a wide range of social relationships (n = 183), (3) active with a narrow range of social relationships (n = 205), and (4) active with a wide range of social relationships (n = 293). After adjusting for potential confounders, a logistic regression analysis was conducted. Results: Participants who were more physically active (odds ratio [OR]: 0.694, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.484–0.997) and those with a wide range of social relationships (OR: 0.690, 95% CI: 0.481–0.988) showed a lower prevalence of sleep disorder than those in the first tertile; these effects were independent of each other. The combined effect analysis revealed that the active group with a wide range of social relationships showed a significantly lower prevalence of sleep disorder (OR: 0.585, 95% CI: 0.404–0.847) than the inactive group with a narrow range of social relationships.Conclusions: Our findings suggest that being physically active with a wide range of social relationships is favorably associated with sleep quality. However, a high level of one variable with a low level of the other is inefficient in improving sleep quality among older adults.

Relationship between sleep quality and marital satisfaction of working women during the premenopausal period

Abstract:Sleep disorders can adversely affect physical, sexual, and marital health, particularly among middle-aged women. This study aimed to determine the relationship between sleep quality and marital satisfaction of working women during the premenopausal period. In this cross-sectional study, we selected 150 women working at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in Iran was selected using random cluster sampling. A demographic information form, the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and the Evaluation and Nurturing Relationship Issues, Communication, and Happiness (ENRICH) marital satisfaction scale were used for data collection. The Data were analyzed using SPSS.22 software at a significance level of P < 0.05. Multiple linear regression analysis was employed to predict sleep quality based on marital satisfaction. Our results showed that 79 (52.7%) of the participants had undesirable sleep quality, 87 (58%) had high marital satisfaction, and 32 (21.3%) had very high marital satisfaction. Regression analysis revealed that the total marital satisfaction score could not predict the sleep quality score of the participants. However, as dimensions of marital satisfaction, personality issues negatively (β = 0.327, P < 0.05) and ideological orientation positively (β = 0.336, P < 0.01) predicted the sleep quality score. Based on the prediction of the sleep quality score by personality issues and ideological orientations among the dimensions of marital satisfaction, it seems that life skills training, especially in these two dimensions, may improve the quality of sleep and, as a result, the physical and mental health of working women.

Abstract:Background: Health literacy and e-health literacy are important factors helping people shape awareness of health behaviours in different aspects, including sleep hygiene behaviours. Good sleep hygiene behaviours promote sleep quality and are beneficial to overall mental wellbeing. Objective: We aimed to examine if sleep hygiene behaviours may mediate the association between health literacy/e-health literacy and mental wellbeing. Methods: Adult Iranian subjects (n = 9775; mean [SD] age = 36.44 [11.97] years; 67.3% females) completed the Health Literacy Instrument for Adults, eHealth Literacy Scale, three items on sleep hygiene behaviour that have been used in prior research and the Short Warwick Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale. Data were then subjected to structural equation modelling (SEM) including 500 bootstrapping resampling to examine whether sleep hygiene is a mediator in the relationship between health literacy/e-health literacy and mental wellbeing. Findings: Both health literacy and e-health literacy were significantly associated with mental wellbeing (r = .63 for health literacy and .39 for e-health literacy; p < .001) and sleep hygiene behaviours (r = .58 for health literacy and .36 for e-health literacy; p < .001). Sleep hygiene behaviours were significantly associated with mental wellbeing (r = .42; p < .001). Moreover, SEM that incorporated bootstrapping approaches indicated that sleep hygiene behaviours were significant mediators in the association between health literacy/e-health literacy and mental wellbeing. Conclusions: We conclude that health literacy and e-health literacy are associated with mental health wellbeing in the Iranian population. Additionally, the association could be mediated via sleep hygiene behaviours. Moreover, the women's health volunteers were involved in the design of the study.

Abstract:Abstract Background Diabetes type 2 is a chronic metabolic disease with major physical and health problems that is on the rise. The aim of this study was to evaluate the factors affecting sleep quality in patients with type 2 diabetes in Iran. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 160 patients with type 2 diabetes referred to the diabetes clinic of Kosar Hospital of Semnan city (Iran) in 2018. The sampling was convenient. The data collection tools were four questionnaires including demographic-clinical variables, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire, Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and Beck depression inventory II questionnaire. The data was analyzed by STATA 14 and the crude and adjusted coefficient regression ( β ) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) were reported. Results The mean (± S.D) of age was 58.70 (± 12.16) years and 60% were female. The multivariate linear regression model showed depression ( β = 0.11; 95% CI 0.07–0.16) and sex ( β = 1.24; 95% CI 0.17–2.30) are the most important predictors of sleep quality in diabetic patients. However, only underlying disease ( β = 1.73; 95% CI 0.33–3.12) was the most important predictors of daily sleep disorder in diabetic patients. Conclusions Depression and sex were the most important predictors of sleep quality in diabetic patients; therefore, it seems necessary to pay attention to these factors in the design of sleep disorder prevention and control programs.
