Abstract:Food retail outlets, by making food accessible, available and affordable, contribute significantly to consumers’ food choices, including snack food choices, and ultimately their longer-term health status. Therefore, the food retail environment may represent an opportune place to harness marketing power to implement anti-obesity measures. The study aimed to understand consumers’ purchasing decisions for confectionery and savoury snack food items both on and off promotion. Associated objectives sought to identify what influences consumers’ food buying decisions and understand if these differ by food product category or promotional status, particularly in respect of single versus multi-pack confectionery/savoury snack food items, to inform retail promotional strategies and anti-obesity policymaking. In order to gain an insight into consumers’ motivations, attitudes and behaviours, an ethically compliant, quantitative survey was designed which collected data from 302 respondents aged 18-75. Three-quarters (76%) of those surveyed believed promotions are more prevalent for less healthy foods compared to healthy foods. Promotions were found to have a significant impact on consumer behaviour, causing 64% to purchase greater volume of an item and 76.5% to purchase confectionery and savoury snacks more readily. Respondents made unintended purchases regularly with the highest incidence among those shopping four to six times per week, while 72% of all unintended purchases were attributed to promotional activity. Findings highlight the clear effect promotions have on consumers’ buying behaviour. The main enabler reported to encourage consumers to make healthier food choices was “if healthy food was cheaper”. Additionally, the findings also suggest that increasing the price of less healthy foods (such as confectionery and savoury snacks) could also impact positively on consumers’ purchasing behaviours. The research indicates the potential for future supermarket health promotion initiatives to encourage consumers to make healthier food choices which could play a vital role in improving public health and subsequently reduce obesity levels.

Abstract:Background: Dietary changes are necessary to improve population health and meet environmental sustainability targets. Here we analyse the impact of promotional activities implemented in UK supermarkets on purchases of healthier and more sustainable foods. Methods: Three natural experiments examined the impact of promotional activities on sales of a) no-added-sugar (NAS) plant-based milk (in 199 stores), b) products promoted during 'Veganuary' (in 96 stores), and c) seasonal fruit (in 100 non-randomised intervention and 100 matched control stores). Data were provided on store-level product sales, in units sold and monetary value (£), aggregated weekly. Predominant socioeconomic position (SEP) of the store population was provided by the retailer. Analyses used interrupted time series and multivariable hierarchical mixed-effects models. Results: Sales of both promoted and total NAS plant-based milks increased significantly during the promotional period (Promoted:+126 units, 95%CI: 105-148; Overall:+307 units, 95%CI: 264-349). The increase was greater in stores with predominately low SEP shoppers. During Veganuary, sales increased significantly for plant-based foods on promotion (+60 units, 95%CI: 37-84), but not for sales of plant-based foods overall (dairy alternatives: -1131 units, 95%CI: -5821-3559; meat alternatives: 1403 units, 95%CI: -749-3554). There was no evidence of a change in weekly sales of promoted seasonal fruit products (assessed via ratio change in units sold: 0.01, 95%CI: 0.00-0.02), and overall fruit category sales slightly decreased in intervention stores relative to control (ratio change in units sold: -0.01, 95%CI: -0.01-0.00). Conclusion: During promotional campaigns there was evidence that sales of plant-based products increased, but not seasonal fruits. There was no evidence for any sustained change beyond the intervention period.
Product promotional strategies in supermarkets and their effects on sales: A case study of breakfast cereals and drinks in New Zealand

Abstract:Aims: To examine the frequency of promotions on breakfast cereals and drinks in a major New Zealand supermarket chain, determine the healthiness of promoted versus non-promoted products, and quantify the effects of promotions on sales. Methods: Weekly data on product promotions and sales were collected in six Auckland supermarkets for 198 breakfast products over 12 weeks. The healthiness of products was determined using the Health Star Rating system, and the effect of promotions on sales was estimated using linear mixed models. Results: On average, 47% of breakfast products in a given week were promoted using on-shelf tickets, 12% in weekly mailers, and 9% via promotional displays. The healthiness of promoted and non-promoted breakfast products was comparable. In relation to weekly sales of non-promoted products, all three promotional strategies had substantial (2 to 2.5 times higher sales) and statistically significant (P < 0.001) effects on product sales. Conclusion: Promotions are frequently used and effective at increasing sales. Marketing strategies focusing solely on promoting healthier products could be an important nudging strategy to improve the healthiness of supermarket food purchases.

Abstract:AIM The aim of thos paper was to determine the effect of oral supplementation (OS) with a nutraceutical, containing methionine, Echinacea, zinc, probiotics and other antioxidant and immunostimulating compounds, on the response of cutaneous warts to conventional standard therapy (CST). METHODS This was an open-label study in adults and adolescents aged 14 years or more and with a body weight ≥40 kg, who had at least one cutaneous viral wart. Eligible patients were consecutively allocated to CST (topical therapy with a preparation containing salicylic acid and lactic acid or liquid nitrogen cryotherapy) alone or CST combined with nutraceutical OS for 4 months. RESULTS A total of 172 patients were enrolled: 83 received CST alone and 89 CST+OS. During the 6-month observation period, a statistically significant reduction of the mean number of warts was obtained in each treatment group and subgroup. The addition of nutraceutical OS was associated with a significantly lower number of warts at 6 months as compared to CST alone. Complete remission was obtained in 54.5% and 86% of patients in the CST group and CST+OS arm, respectively (P<0.001). The influence of the nutraceutical on the response rate appeared to be more prominent in the subgroup of patients treated with topical therapy. The development of new warts during the study period occurred significantly less frequently with CST+OS compared to CST (9% versus 25%; P=0.004). No adverse events possibly related to the nutraceutical administration were observed. CONCLUSION Our pilot experience seems to suggest that nutraceutical OS is safe and beneficial in patients with cutaneous warts, and capable of enhancing the response to CST.

Abstract:Objective: Prior research has shown that there are more supermarket displays of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB) during times when Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits are distributed ('issuance periods'). This may contribute to inequitable purchasing and consumption. This study examines whether SSB marketing in weekly supermarket circulars, which retailers use to advertise products, is more prevalent during issuance periods compared to non-issuance periods. Design: We conducted longitudinal, difference-in-differences analyses of data extracted from weekly supermarket circulars of randomly selected SNAP-authorised retailers in six states. Analyses tested whether SSB advertisements ('ads') were more prevalent during SNAP issuance periods compared to non-issuance periods within states with distinct issuance periods (3, 5, 10 or 15 d), compared to one state with continuous benefit issuance (28 d; the 'control' state). Setting: Weekly online supermarket circulars collected from August to September 2019 were analysed in 2021. Participants: The study sample included 5152 circulars from 563 SNAP-authorised retailers in the states California, Connecticut, Nebraska, New Jersey and Texas (distinct issuance period states) as well as Florida ('control' state). Results: The estimated mean percentage of beverage ads classified as SSB ads during issuance days was 51·5 % compared to 48·4 % during non-issuance days (P < 0·001). In difference-in-differences analyses comparing to the 'control' state with continuous issuance, SSB ad counts were 2·9 % higher (95 % CI 1·9 %, 3·9 %) during SNAP issuance relative to non-issuance. Conclusions: SSB ads are slightly more prevalent in weekly supermarket circulars during SNAP issuance periods. Future research should explore the linkages between circular ads and SSB purchasing and consumption.

The normative power of food promotions: Australian children's attachments to unhealthy food brands

Abstract:Objective: The formation of food brand associations and attachment is fundamental to brand preferences, which influence purchases and consumption. Food promotions operate through a cascade of links, from brand recognition, to affect, and on to consumption. Frequent exposures to product promotions may establish social norms for products, reinforcing brand affect. These pathways signify potential mechanisms for how children's exposure to unhealthy food promotions can contribute to poor diets. The present study explored children's brand associations and attachments for major food brands. Design: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted. Fourteen study brands were used, with each child viewing a set of seven logos. The questionnaire assessed perceptions of food brands and perceptions of users of brands, using semantic differential scales, and perceived brand 'personalities', using Likert scales. Setting: New South Wales, Australia, October-November 2014. Subjects: Children aged 10-16 years (n 417). Results: Children demonstrated strong positive affect to certain brands, perceiving some unhealthy food brands to have positive attributes, desirable user traits and alignment to their own personality. Brand personality traits of 'smart' and 'sporty' were viewed as indicators of healthiness. Brands with these traits were ranked lower for popularity. Conclusions: Children's brand associations and attachments indicate the potential normative social influences of promotions. While children are aware of brand healthiness as an attribute, this competes with other brand associations, highlighting the challenge of health/nutrition messaging to counter unhealthy food marketing. Restricting children's exposure to unhealthy food marketing and the persuasive nature of marketing is an important part of efforts to improve children's diet-related health.

Abstract:Using thick-target, thick-catcher recoil range techniques, target residues from the interaction of copper with 40 MeV/nucleon [sup 14]N, 35 MeV/nucleon [sup 16]O, and 25 MeV/nucleon [sup 22]Ne have been studied. Isobaric and mass yield distributions as well as longitudinal momentum transfer information have been determined from measured cross section, average forward range, and forward-to-backward ratios. Comparisons with previously reported reactions involving copper and lighter ions have been made. Comparisons of the data with the interaction-evaporation model Boltzmann-Vehling-Uhlenbeck-PACE are presented.
Improving Consumption and Purchases of Healthier Foods in Retail Environments: A Systematic Review

Abstract:This review examines current research on manipulations of U.S. food retail environments to promote healthier food purchasing and consumption. Studies reviewed use marketing strategies defined as the 4Ps (product, price, placement, promotion) to examine results based on single- and multi-component interventions by study design, outcome, and which of the "Ps" was targeted. Nine electronic databases were searched for publications from 2010 to 2019, followed by forward and backward searches. Studies were included if the intervention was initiated by a researcher or retailer, conducted in-store, and manipulated the retail environment. Of the unique 596 studies initially identified, 64 studies met inclusion criteria. Findings show that 56 studies had at least one positive effect related to healthier food consumption or purchasing. Thirty studies used single-component interventions, while 34 were multi-component. Promotion was the most commonly utilized marketing strategy, while manipulating promotion, placement, and product was the most common for multi-component interventions. Only 14 of the 64 studies were experimental and included objective outcome data. Future research should emphasize rigorous designs and objective outcomes. Research is also needed to understand individual and additive effects of multi-component interventions on sales outcomes, substitution effects of healthy food purchases, and sustainability of impacts.
Association of a Community Campaign for Better Beverage Choices With Beverage Purchases From Supermarkets

Abstract:Importance: Data are needed to evaluate community interventions to reduce consumption of sugary drinks. Supermarket sales data can be used for this purpose. Objective: To compare beverage sales in Howard County, Maryland (HC), with sales in comparison stores in a contiguous state before and during a 3-year campaign to reduce consumption of sugary beverages. Design, setting, and partipicants: This observational experiment with a control group included 15 HC supermarkets and 17 comparison supermarkets. Weekly beverage sales data at baseline (January 1 to December 31, 2012) and from campaign years 1 to 3 (January 1, 2013, through December 31, 2015) were analyzed. A difference-in-differences (DID) regression compared the volume sales per product per week in the HC and comparison stores, controlling for mean product price, competitor's product price, product size, weekly local temperature, and manufacturer. Exposures: The campaign message was to reduce consumption of all sugary drinks. Television advertising, digital marketing, direct mail, outdoor advertising, social media, and earned media during the 3-year period created 17 million impressions. Community partners successfully advocated for public policies to encourage healthy beverage consumption in schools, child care, health care, and government settings. Main outcomes and measures: Sales were tracked of sugary drinks highlighted in the campaign, including regular soda, sports drinks, and fruit drinks. Sales of diet soda and 100% juice were also tracked. Sales data are expressed as mean fluid ounces sold per product, per store, per week. Results: Regular soda sales in the 15 HC supermarkets decreased (-19.7%) from 2012 through 2015, whereas sales remained stable (0.8%) in the 17 comparison supermarkets (DID adjusted mean, -369 fl oz; 95% CI, -469 to -269 fl oz; P < .01). Fruit drink sales decreased (-15.3%) in HC stores and remained stable (-0.6%) in comparison stores (DID adjusted mean, -342 fl oz; 95% CI, -466 to -220 fl oz; P < .001). Sales of 100% juice decreased more in HC (-15.0%) than comparison (-2.1%) stores (DID mean, -576 fl oz; 95% CI, -776 to -375 fl oz; P < .001). Sales of sports drinks (-86.3 fl oz; 95% CI, -343.6 to 170.9 fl oz) and diet soda (-17.8 in HC stores vs -11.3 in comparison stores; DID adjusted mean, -78.9 fl oz; 95% CI, -182.1 to 24.4 fl oz) decreased in both communities, but the decreases were not significantly different between groups. Conclusions and relevance: A locally designed, multicomponent campaign to reduce consumption of sugary drinks was associated with an accelerated decrease in sales of regular soda, fruit drinks, and 100% juice. This policy-focused campaign provides a road map for other communities to reduce consumption of sugary drinks.

Abstract:Supermarkets have been described as having unprecedented and disproportionate power in the food system, influencing population diets through the products they have for sale, their price, store layouts, and other marketing activities (1) .There is growing evidence to suggest that changing the retail food environment to be more health-enabling via in-store interventions is possible. The purpose of this study was to review the available high-quality evidence reporting on the effectiveness of real-world supermarket-based interventions on improving the healthiness of consumer purchases and consumption. First, a systematic search across seven electronic databases was completed in April 2023 to identify reviews describing the effects of intervention strategies that aimed to improve the healthiness of consumer purchasing in supermarkets and grocery stores (overview of reviews). The methodological quality of reviews was assessed using the Risk of Bias In Systematic Reviews for systematic and scoping reviews, and the Scale for the Assessment of Narrative Review Articles for narrative reviews. Review findings were synthesised narratively. Next, high-quality, primary studies from these reviews were further inspected (review of primary studies). In-store interventions were categorised by strategy type (2) , and outcome effects were coded as effective (positive/promising), ineffective or mixed/unclear (3) . Results were synthesised narratively, and separately for population subgroups. Thirty-eight reviews published between 1989 and 2023 met the inclusion criteria. Most were systematic reviews (n = 29, 76%). The number of primary studies included in reviews ranged between eight and 211. Prompting (n = 19, 50%) and pricing (n = 15, 40%) were the most assessed strategy type, either alone or in combination with another strategy. From the overview of reviews, pricing strategies appeared to be the most promising at improving consumer purchasing. Twenty-three high-quality primary studies met the inclusion criteria for further review. In most studies (n = 21, 91%), the goal was to increase sales of healthy products, most commonly fruit and vegetables, or products with a higher nutritional ranking. Only two studies (9%) aimed to exclusively reduce sales of unhealthy/less healthy products. Promotion was the most assessed strategy type (n = 11, 48%), either alone or in combination with another strategy. Common promotion strategies included providing education to customers about the health benefits of selected products, offering samples of products and giving food demonstrations. From the review of primary studies, promotional strategies used in combination with another strategy appeared to be most successful in the general population, and pricing was successful in subgroups of the population, including socioeconomically disadvantaged individuals, and those living in regional/remote areas. Overall, the evidence reviewed shows that the implementation of health-promoting supermarket interventions are more likely to be successful if they include a substantial pricing initiative (particularly for some subgroups), or the inclusion of promotion in combination with another strategy.

Enhanced Measurement of Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Marketing to Young Immigrant Children in Grocery Store Environments

Abstract:The marketing of Sugar-Sweetened Beverages (SSBs) within grocers is an obesogenic factor that negatively impacts children’s nutritional behavior, specifically for people from racial and ethnic minority groups, such as immigrants. We aimed to develop and employ a methodology that more precisely assesses the availability, price, and promotion of SSBs to young immigrant children within independently owned grocery stores. A case comparison design was used to explore the differences in the grocery store landscape of SSB marketing by conducting an enhanced Nutrition Environment Measures Survey-SSB (NEMS-SSB) within 30 grocery stores in the Hispanic and Latino enclaves in Southwest Detroit, in the Arab and Chaldean enclaves in North-central Detroit, and in Warren, Hamtramck, and Dearborn, in comparison with 48 grocers in Metro Detroit. Unsweetened, plant-based, and organic toddler and infant beverages, as well as questions about marketing, were added to the original NEMS to capture the promotion tactics used in marketing SSBs. NEMS-SSB scores revealed that, in the immigrant enclaves, there was a significantly higher availability of SSBs in grocery stores (−2.38), and they had lower prices than those in the comparison group (−0.052). Unsweetened, plant-based, and organic beverages were unavailable in 97% of all participating grocery stores across both groups. Signage featuring cartoon characters was the most frequent in-store SSB marketing tactic across both groups. Widespread SSB marketing toward toddlers within the grocery stores in immigrant enclaves could be linked with the higher early childhood obesity prevalence among the immigrant population. Our findings can assist local and national organizations in developing and implementing healthy eating interventions. This study must be repeated in other immigrant enclaves across states to provide comparable results.

Testing a conceptual Hierarchy of Effects model of food marketing exposure and associations with children and adolescents' diet-related outcomes

Abstract:Objective: Children's exposure to unhealthy food marketing contributes to poor diets by influencing the foods that children like, request, buy and consume. This study aimed to use confirmatory mediational analyses to test a hypothetical model of marketing effects, to better understand the mechanisms behind food marketing's impacts on children. Design: Children responded to a cross-sectional online survey about their attitudes towards, and purchase and consumption behaviours of, ten frequently promoted food/beverage brands and their media use. Structural equation modelling tested a priori potential pathways for the effects of food marketing exposure on children's diets. Participants: 10-16-year-old children (n 400). Setting: Australia. Results: There was a significant positive correlation between children's commercial screen media use and their attitudes towards brands (related to perceived social norms) and their brand purchasing behaviours, including their own purchases and requests to parents. The use of strategies to avoid advertising in commercial screen media reduced but did not remove the association between media use and brand purchases. Other brand exposures (on clothing, outdoor advertising, sponsorships) had a positive association with children's perceived social norms about brands and their brand purchases and requests. Non-commercial screen media use was not associated with any brand-related outcomes. Conclusions: Commercial screen media use and other brand exposures were strongly positively associated with children's perceptions and purchasing behaviours of frequently marketed food/beverages. Regulations to restrict children's exposures to food marketing on-screen and through other media are required to reduce the effect of marketing exposure on children's food purchasing behaviours.
Nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs and the risk of keratinocyte skin cancer among women

Abstract:We read with great interest the study by Johannesdottir and coworkers, who report that a high-intensity and long-term use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAID) is associated with a decreased risk of squamous cell carcinoma. Their observation is highly intriguing in the light of the reported higher frequency of keratinocyte skin cancer (ie, actinic keratoses and squamous cell carcinoma) among men compared with women. To date, the sex-related different frequency of keratinocyte skin cancer has been solely attributed to a higher occupational sun exposure of men compared with women. The study by Johannesdottir et al provides the first evidence for an alternative explanation, which could be linked to the chronic use of painkillers and menstrual cycle–related symptoms. It has been estimated that as many as 2.5 million women each year are affected by menstrual disorders such as primary dysmenorrhea, which often cause excessive pain shortly before or during the menstruation. The use of NSAIDs have been shown to effectively reduce the pain and represents first-line treatment. Given that approximately 25% of women will presumably use NSAIDs on a monthly basis for several years, if not decades, the observation made Johannesdottir et al supports the hypothesis that NSAIDs may represent a currently unrecognized factor associated with a lower incidence of keratinocyte skin cancer in women compared with men. Although the authors did not investigate such correlation, their data strongly emphasize the need to look closer at the potential role of NSAIDs in the prevention of keratinocyte skin cancer in the future.

Abstract:Background: Food is one of the most frequently promoted commodities, and promoted foods are overwhelmingly unhealthy. Marketing normalizes unhealthy foods, creates a positive brand image, and encourages overconsumption. Limited research is available to describe the extent of food marketing to children on web-based media, and measuring actual exposure is challenging. Objective: This study aims to monitor the extent of children's exposure to web-based media food marketing as an essential step in increasing the accountability of industry and governments to protect children. Methods: Children aged 13-17 years were recruited from October 2018 to March 2019. Children recorded their mobile device screen for 2 weekdays and 1 weekend day any time they visited relevant web-based platforms. After each day, the participants uploaded the video files to a secure server. Promoted products were defined using the World Health Organization European Region nutrient profile model. Results: The sample of 95 children uploaded 267.8 hours of video data. Children saw a median of 17.4 food promotions each hour on the internet. Considering the usual time spent on the internet on mobile devices, children would be exposed to a median of 168.4 food promotions on the web on mobile devices per week, 99.5 of which would not be permitted to be marketed based on nutrient profiling criteria. Most promotions (2613/4446, 58.77%) were peer endorsed and derived from third-party sources. Conclusions: Exposure to brand content that is seemingly endorsed by peers or web-based communities likely heightens the effects of marketing on children. Regulations to protect children from this marketing must extend beyond paid advertising to paid content in posts generated through web-based communities and influencers.
Measuring Micro-Level Effects of a New Supermarket: Do Residents Within 0.5 Mile Have Improved Dietary Behaviors?

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Local and national policies to encourage supermarket opening or expansion are popular strategies for improving access to healthy food for residents in neighborhoods lacking these types of stores, yet few evaluations of such initiatives exist.OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to test whether a newly opened supermarket in the Bronx, NY, changed household availability of healthy and unhealthy food items and reported daily consumption of these items among respondents residing in close proximity (≤0.5 mile) to the new supermarket.DESIGN: This quasi-experimental study evaluated changes in purchasing and consumption habits of residents within 0.5 mile of the new supermarket as compared to residents living more than 0.5 mile from the supermarket. Data were collected through street intercept surveys at three different times: once before the store opened (March to August 2011) and in two follow-up periods (1 to 5 months and 13 to 17 months after the store opened). This study analyzed a subset of successfully geocoded resident intersections from the larger study.PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: We surveyed 3,998 residents older than the age of 18 years in two Bronx neighborhoods about their food-purchasing behaviors before the store opened and in two follow-up periods. Responses from residents whose intersections were successfully geocoded (N=3,378) were analyzed to examine the consumption and purchasing behaviors of those in close proximity to the new store.INTERVENTION: A new supermarket opened in a low-access neighborhood in the Bronx with the help of financial incentives through New York City's Food Retail Expansion to Support Health (FRESH) program.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: The primary outcome evaluated was the change in percent of respondents reporting that the following food items were "always available" in the home: milk, fruit juice, soda, pastries, packaged snacks, fruits, and vegetables. As a secondary outcome, we explored changes in self-reported daily servings of these items.STATISTICAL ANALYSIS PERFORMED: A difference-in-difference analysis was performed, controlling for age, education, marital status, income, sex, race, and ethnicity.RESULTS: Residents within 0.5 mile of the store had increased household availability of both healthy and unhealthy foods. After the introduction of the supermarket, the percent of residents in close proximity to the store who reported always having produce available in the home increased by 8.8% compared to those living >0.5 mile from the store in the first post-period and by 10.6% compared to those living >0.5 mile from the store in the second post-period. A similar positive increase in household availability of salty snacks and pastries was observed. Residents living in close proximity also reported greater consumption of healthy foods like produce and water, and lower intake of soft drinks and pastries.CONCLUSIONS: Given the financial support at the national and local levels to encourage supermarket development and expansion in high-need communities, it is imperative to evaluate the impact of such initiatives. Although the findings have so far been equivocal, our findings give weight to the argument that, at a micro-level, the siting of a new supermarket can indeed impact local purchasing and consumption behavior. Although purchasing for both healthy and unhealthy food items increased, reported consumption showed an increase in servings of healthy items (water, vegetables, and fruit) and a decrease in servings of unhealthy foods (soft drinks, salty snacks, and pastries).

Abstract:<p>Policies to restrict unhealthy food and beverage price promotions have been recommended, as part of a broader strategy to reduce obesity, but little evidence underpins such recommendations. We aimed to synthesize the literature on the prevalence of healthy and unhealthy food and beverage price promotions and their potential influence on purchasing behaviour. Eight scientific databases (covering health, business, and marketing) and grey literature were systematically searched using search terms related to "food and beverage price promotions" up until July 2019. Articles were included if they examined prevalence of, and/or consumer response to, food and non‐alcoholic beverage price promotions, from a nutritional perspective. Of the 16 included studies, eight examined the prevalence of price promotions and eight examined the potential influence of price promotions on purchasing behaviour. Seven of the "prevalence" studies found that price promotions were more common for unhealthy foods and beverages. Seven "influence" studies found a greater proportion of price‐promoted purchases were for unhealthy compared with healthy products. Policies that reduce the prevalence and/or influence of price promotions on unhealthy foods and beverages may shift consumer purchasing away from unhealthy foods and beverages. Empirical studies are required to better understand how consumers and industry may respond to such policies.</p>

Abstract:The retail food environment plays an important role in shaping dietary habits that contribute to obesity and other chronic diseases. Food and beverage manufacturers use trade promotion—incentives paid to retailers—to influence how products are placed, priced, and promoted in stores. This review aims to: (1) catalogue trade promotion practices that manufacturers use to influence retailer marketing strategies, and (2) describe how these retailer marketing strategies affect consumer purchasing behavior and attitudes. Researchers searched five databases, Academic Search Ultimate, Business Source Ultimate, PsycINFO, PubMed, and Web of Science, to identify literature from industry and academic sources published in English through November 2019. Twenty articles describing manufacturer trade promotion practices were synthesized and provided insight into four types of trade promotion practices: category management, slotting allowances, price discounts, and cooperative advertising. Fifty-four articles describing the impact of retailer marketing on consumers were synthesized and graded for quality of evidence. While comparison across studies is challenging, findings suggest that retailer marketing strategies, such as price promotions and prominent placement, lead to increased sales. Results can guide efforts by policymakers, public health practitioners, and food retailers to design retail environments that improve healthy eating while maintaining retailer financial interests. Additional research should measure the impact of retailer marketing strategies on consumer diet quality and retailer outcomes (e.g., return-on-investment).
