Abstract:S-RNase-mediated self-incompatibility (SI) prevents self-fertilization and promotes outbreeding to ensure genetic diversity in many flowering plants, including pear (Pyrus sp.). Brassinosteroids (BRs) have well-documented functions in cell elongation, but their molecular mechanisms in pollen tube growth, especially in the SI response, remain elusive. Here, exogenously applied brassinolide (BL), an active BR, countered incompatible pollen tube growth inhibition during the SI response in pear. Antisense repression of BRASSINAZOLE-RESISTANT1 (PbrBZR1), a critical component of BR signaling, blocked the positive effect of BL on pollen tube elongation. Further analyses revealed that PbrBZR1 binds to the promoter of EXPANSIN-LIKE A3 (PbrEXLA3) to activate its expression. PbrEXLA3 encodes an expansin that promotes pollen tube elongation in pear. The stability of dephosphorylated PbrBZR1 was substantially reduced in incompatible pollen tubes, where it is targeted by ARIADNE2.3 (PbrARI2.3), an E3 ubiquitin ligase that is strongly expressed in pollen. Our results show that during the SI response, PbrARI2.3 accumulates and negatively regulates pollen tube growth by accelerating the degradation of PbrBZR1 via the 26S proteasome pathway. Together, our results show that a ubiquitin-mediated modification participates in BR signaling in pollen and reveal the molecular mechanism by which BRs regulate S-RNase-based SI.

Abstract:Gametophytic self-incompatibility (SI) is regulated by S-allele recognition; that is, pollen in a style with the same S-genotype will undergo programmed cell death and stop growing so that it is unable to complete double fertilization, ultimately resulting in the SI response. S-RNase is the female determinant of SI in pear (Pyrus). In the Pyrus genome, there are two different S-RNase alleles at the S-locus, which generate two different S-RNase products in the pistil. The extracted S-glycoprotein is actually a protein complex. In this study, artificial self-pollination was conducted at the bud stage to overcome SI in 'Huanghua' (S1S2) pear. Seven plants homozygous for S1-RNase and four homozygous for S2-RNase were selected from the selfed progeny of 'Huanghua' by S-gene molecular identification biotechnology. We investigated the function of single S-RNases isolated from the pistils of S-gene homozygous Pyrus germplasm. The pollen of 'Huanghua' could smoothly pass through the style of the S-gene homozygous germplasm and complete fertilization. S-RNases were extracted from flower styles of different genotypes and used to treat different types of pollen. The S-RNase from 'Huanghua' completely inhibited the growth of S1S2, S1S1, and S2S2 pollen, while the S-RNase from homozygous germplasm allowed some S1S2 pollen and different single genotypes of pollen to continue growing. These results further validate the core events of SI including cytoskeleton depolymerization and programmed cell death. By iTRAQ-based proteomic analysis of style proteins, a total of 13 S-RNase-related proteins were identified. In summary, we have created reliable S-RNase gene homozygous germplasm, which will play a crucial role in further research on SI in pear and in the development of the pear industry.

Abstract:In flowering plants, male meiosis produces four microspores, which develop into pollen grains and are released by anther dehiscence to pollinate female gametophytes. The molecular and cellular mechanisms regulating male meiosis in rice (Oryza sativa) remain poorly understood. Here, we describe a rice pollen semi-sterility1 (pss1) mutant, which displays reduced spikelet fertility (similar to 40%) primarily caused by reduced pollen viability (similar to 50% viable), and defective anther dehiscence. Map-based molecular cloning revealed that PSS1 encodes a kinesin-1-like protein. PSS1 is broadly expressed in various organs, with highest expression in panicles. Furthermore, PSS1 expression is significantly upregulated during anther development and peaks during male meiosis. The PSS1-green fluorescent protein fusion is predominantly localized in the cytoplasm of rice protoplasts. Substitution of a conserved Arg (Arg-289) to His in the PSS1 motor domain nearly abolishes its microtubule-stimulated ATPase activity. Consistent with this, lagging chromosomes and chromosomal bridges were found at anaphase I and anaphase II of male meiosis in the pss1 mutant. Together, our results suggest that PSS1 defines a novel member of the kinesin-1 family essential for male meiotic chromosomal dynamics, male gametogenesis, and anther dehiscence in rice.

Abstract:Pummelo (Citrus grandis L. Osbeck) exhibits S-RNase-based self-incompatibility (SI), during which S-RNase cytotoxicity inhibits pollen tubes in an S-haplotype specific manner. The entry of S-RNase into self-pollen tubes triggers a series of reactions. However, these reactions are still poorly understood in pummelo. In the present study, we used S-RNases as baits to screen a pummelo pollen cDNA library and characterized a myo-inositol oxygenase (CgMIOX3) that physically interacts with S-RNases. CgMIOX3 is highly expressed in pummelo pollen tubes and its down-regulation leads to a reduction in pollen tube growth. Upon entering pollen tubes, S-RNases increase the expression of CgMIOX3 and enhance its activity by directly binding to it in an S-haplotype-independent manner. CgMIOX3 improves pollen tube growth under oxidative stress through ascorbic acid accumulation and increases the length of self-pollen tubes. Furthermore, over-expression of CgMIOX3 increases the relative length of self-pollen tubes growing in the style of petunia (Petunia hybrida). This study provides intriguing insights into the pumelo SI system, revealing a regulatory mechanism mediated by CgMIOX3 that plays an important role in the resistance of pollen tubes to S-RNase cytotoxicity.

Abstract:Selfish genetic elements are pervasive in eukaryote genomes, but their role remains controversial. We show that qHMS7 , a major quantitative genetic locus for hybrid male sterility between wild rice ( Oryza meridionalis ) and Asian cultivated rice ( O. sativa ), contains two tightly linked genes [ Open Reading Frame 2 ( ORF2 ) and ORF3 ]. ORF2 encodes a toxic genetic element that aborts pollen in a sporophytic manner, whereas ORF3 encodes an antidote that protects pollen in a gametophytic manner. Pollens lacking ORF3 are selectively eliminated, leading to segregation distortion in the progeny. Analysis of the genetic sequence suggests that ORF3 arose first, followed by gradual functionalization of ORF2 . Furthermore, this toxin-antidote system may have promoted the differentiation and/or maintained the genome stability of wild and cultivated rice.

Abstract:S-RNase plays vital roles in the process of self-incompatibility (SI) in Rutaceae plants. Data have shown that the rejection phenomenon during self-pollination is due to the degradation of pollen tube RNA by S-RNase. The cytoskeleton microfilaments of pollen tubes are destroyed, and other components cannot extend downwards from the stigma and, ultimately, cannot reach the ovary to complete fertilisation. In this study, four S-RNase gene sequences were identified from the 'XiangShui' lemon genome and ubiquitome. Sequence analysis revealed that the conserved RNase T2 domains within S-RNases in 'XiangShui' lemon are the same as those within other species. Expression pattern analysis revealed that S3-RNase and S4-RNase are specifically expressed in the pistils, and spatiotemporal expression analysis showed that the S3-RNase expression levels in the stigmas, styles and ovaries were significantly higher after self-pollination than after cross-pollination. Subcellular localisation analysis showed that the S1-RNase, S2-RNase, S3-RNase and S4-RNase were found to be expressed in the nucleus according to laser confocal microscopy. In addition, yeast two-hybrid (Y2H) assays showed that S3-RNase interacted with F-box, Bifunctional fucokinase/fucose pyrophosphorylase (FKGP), aspartic proteinase A1, RRP46, pectinesterase/pectinesterase inhibitor 51 (PME51), phospholipid:diacylglycerol acyltransferase 1 (PDAT1), gibberellin receptor GID1B, GDT1-like protein 4, putative invertase inhibitor, tRNA ligase, PAP15, PAE8, TIM14-2, PGIP1 and p24beta2. Moreover, S3-RNase interacted with TOPP4. Therefore, S3-RNase may play an important role in the SI of 'XiangShui' lemon.

Abstract:The S-RNase gene plays an essential role in the gametophytic self-incompatibility (GSI) system of Pyrus . It codes for the stylar-expressed S-RNase protein which inhibits the growth of incompatible pollen tubes through cytotoxicity and the induction of programmed cell death in the pollen tube. While research on the Pyrus GSI system has primarily focused on the S-RNase gene, there is still a lack of insight into its spatiotemporal expression profile and the factors that regulate it. Previous studies have suggested that S-RNase expression in the style is influenced by pollination and is dependent on the compatibility type. We here continue on this basic hypothesis by analyzing the spatiotemporal expression of the S-RNase alleles in Pyrus communis "Conference" styles in response to different types of pollination; namely, upon full- and semi-compatible pollination and upon incompatible selfing. The results revealed that temporal dynamics of S-RNase expression are influenced by the pollen's compatibility type, indicating the presence of a signaling mechanism between pollen and style to control S-RNase production during pollen tube growth. In our experiment, S-RNase expression continuously decreased after cross-pollination and in the unpollinated control. However, after a fully incompatible pollination, S-RNase expression remained constant. Finally, semi-compatible pollination showed a initially constant S-RNase expression for both alleles followed by a strong decrease in expression. Based on these results and previous findings, we propose a regulatory mechanism to explain the effect of pollination and the associated compatibility type on S-RNase expression in the style. This proposed mechanism could be used as a starting point for future research.

Abstract:Apple (Malus domestica) exhibits classic S-RNase-mediated gametophytic self-incompatibility. Previous studies have shown that the S-RNase secreted from style cells could trigger signal transduction and defense responses mediated by Ca2+ and reactive oxygen species (ROS) after entering into the pollen tube. In this study, we investigated the downstream genes activated by ROS during S-RNase-mediated gametophytic self-incompatibility in pollen tubes. A substantial increase in ROS, as well as up-regulated expression of a serine-threonine protein kinase gene, OXIDATIVE SIGNAL-INDUCIBLE1 (MdOXI1), was detected in apple pollen tubes treated with self-S-RNase. A kinase assay-linked phosphoproteomics (KALIP) analysis suggested that MdOXI1 could bind and phosphorylate the downstream protein kinase Pto-interacting protein 1-like (MdPTI1L). The phosphorylation level of MdPTI1L was significantly reduced after silencing MdOXI1 with antisense oligonucleotides in the pollen tube. Silencing of either MdOXI1 or MdPTI1L alleviated the inhibitory effect of self-S-RNase on pollen tube growth. Our results thus indicate that MdPTI1L is phosphorylated by MdOXI1 in the pollen tube and participates in the ROS signaling pathway triggered by S-RNase.

Abstract:Pear has an S-RNase-based gametophytic self-incompatibility (SI) system. Nuclear DNA degradation is a typical feature of incompatible pollen tube death, and is among the many physiological functions of vacuoles. However, the specific changes that occur in vacuoles, as well as the associated regulatory mechanism in pear SI, are currently unclear. Although research in tobacco has shown that decreased activity of diacylglycerol kinase (DGK) results in the morphological change of pollen tube vacuole, whether DGK regulates the pollen tube vacuole of tree plants and whether it occurs in SI response, is currently unclear. We found that DGK activity is essential for pear pollen tube growth, and DGK4 regulates pollen tube vacuole morphology following its high expression and deposition at the tip and shank edge of the pollen tube of pear. Specifically, incompatible S-RNase may induce cytoplasmic acidification of the pollen tube by inhibiting V-ATPase V0 domain a1 subunit gene expression as early as 30 min after treatment, when the pollen tube is still alive. Cytoplasmic acidification induced by incompatible S-RNase results in reduced DGK4 abundance and deposition, leading to morphological change of the vacuole and fragmentation of nuclear DNA, which indicates that DGK4 is a key factor in pear SI response.

Abstract:Most plants in the Brassicaceae evolve self-incompatibility (SI) to avoid inbreeding and generate hybrid vigor. Self-pollen is recognized by the S-haplotype-specific interaction of the pollen ligand S-locus protein 11 (SP11) (also known as S-locus cysteine-rich protein [SCR]) and its stigma-specific S-locus receptor kinase (SRK). However, mechanistically much remains unknown about the signaling events that culminate in self-pollen rejection. Here, we show that self-pollen triggers high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in stigma papilla cells to mediate SI in heading Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa L. ssp. pekinensis). We found that stigmatic ROS increased after self-pollination but decreased after compatible(CP)- pollination. Reducing stigmatic ROS by scavengers or suppressing the expression of respiratory burst oxidase homologs (Rbohs), which encode plant NADPH oxidases that produce ROS, both broke down SI. On the other hand, increasing the level of ROS inhibited the germination and penetration of compatible pollen on the stigma, mimicking an incompatible response. Furthermore, suppressing a B. rapa FERONIA (FER) receptor kinase homolog or Rac/Rop guanosine triphosphatase (GTPase) signaling effectively reduced stigmatic ROS and interfered with SI. Our results suggest that FER-Rac/Rop signaling-regulated, NADPH oxidase-produced ROS is an essential SI response leading to self-pollen rejection.

Abstract:Self-incompatibility (SI), an important barrier to inbreeding in flowering plants, is controlled in many species by a single polymorphic S-locus. In the Solanaceae, two tightly linked S-locus genes, S-RNase and SLF (S-locus F-box)/SFB (S-haplotype-specific F-box), control SI expression in pistil and pollen, respectively. The pollen S-determinant appears to function to inhibit all but self S-RNase in the Solanaceae, but its genetic function in the closely-related Plantaginaceae remains equivocal. We have employed transposon mutagenesis in a member of the Plantaginaceae (Antirrhinum) to generate a pollen-part SI-breakdown mutant Pma1 (Pollen-part mutation in Antirrhinum1). Molecular genetic analyses showed that an extra telocentric chromosome containing AhSLF-S ( 1 ) is present in its self-compatible but not in its SI progeny. Furthermore, analysis of the effects of selection revealed positive selection acting on both SLFs and SFBs, but with a stronger purifying selection on SLFs. Taken together, our results suggest an inhibitor role of the pollen S in the Plantaginaceae (as represented by Antirrhinum), similar to that found in the Solanaceae. The implication of these findings is discussed in the context of S-locus evolution in flowering plants.

Abstract:PURPOSE Endurance exercise may reduce blood pressure and improve vasodilatory capacity, thereby blunting the hypertensive response to stress. Therefore, we sought to test the efficacy of a novel model of low-impact endurance training, the aquatic treadmill (ATM), to improve blood pressure (BP) parameters. METHODS Sixty sedentary adults were randomized to 12-wk of either ATM (n = 36 [19 males and 17 females], 41 ± 2 yr, 173.58 ± 1.58 cm, 93.19 ± 3.15 kg) or land-based treadmill (LTM, n = 24 [11 males, 13 females], 42 ± 2 yr, 170.39 ± 1.94 cm, 88.14 ± 3.6 kg) training, three sessions per week, progressing to 500 kcal per session, 85% VO2max. The maximal Bruce treadmill test protocol was performed before and after training with BP measured before, at the end of each stage, and for 5 min after exercise testing. Twelve subjects (five ATM and seven LTM) volunteered for biopsies of the vastus lateralis before and after training, and muscle samples were assessed for endothelial nitric oxide synthase content. Data collected during exercise testing were analyzed using group by training ANCOVA repeated across training, α = 0.05. RESULTS ATM but not LTM training significantly reduced resting diastolic BP (-3.2 mm Hg), exercise systolic BP (range 9-18.2 mm Hg lower for each exercise stage), diastolic BP (3.2-8.1 mm Hg), mean arterial pressure (4.8-8.3 mm Hg, lower than LTM posttraining), and pulse pressure (7.5-15 mm Hg) during stages of exercise stress and recovery (P < 0.05). In addition, an increase (+31%) in skeletal muscle endothelial nitric oxide synthase content after training (P < 0.05) occurred in only the ATM group. Body mass (-1.27 kg) and VO2max (+3.6 mL · kg(-1) · min(-1)) changes were significant for both groups (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION ATM training can reduce BP reactivity to physical stress.

Abstract:To avoid inbreeding and promote out-crossing,many flowering plants have adopted self-incompatibility(SI) systems,through which incompatible(self or genetically related) pollen is recognized and rejected,whereas compatible(non-self) pollen is allowed to grow in the style to deliver the germ cells to the ovary for double fertilization.Among various SI systems,gametophytic SI in Solanaceae,Scrophulariaceae and Rosaceae appears to be the most common whereby the specificity of SI response is controlled by a single polymorphic S-locus.Recent studies have shown that the S-locus is organized in a haplotype fashion and carries at least two genes determining the recognition specificity:S-ribonucleases expressed in the pistil(pistil-S) and S-locus F-box(SLF) genes in the pollen(pollen-S).Here we discuss recent data on the possible molecular mechanisms eliciting the S-RNase-based self-incompatibility response.

Abstract:Self-incompatibility (SI) is a crucial mechanism that prevents self-fertilization and inbreeding in flowering plants. Citrus exhibits SI regulated by a polymorphic S -locus containing an S-RNase gene and multiple S -locus F-box ( SLF ) genes. It has been documented that S-RNase functions as the pistil S determinant, but there is no direct evidence that the SLFs closely linked with S-RNase function as pollen S determinants in Citrus . This study assembled the genomes of two pummelo ( Citrus grandis ) plants and obtained three novel complete and well-annotated S -haplotypes and isolated 36 SLF or SLF-like alleles on the S -loci. Phylogenetic analysis of 138 SLFs revealed that the SLFs were classified into 12 types, including six types with divergent or missing alleles. Furthermore, transformation experiments verified that the conserved S 6 -SLF7a protein can lead the transition of SI to self-compatibility (SC) by recognizing non-self S 8 -RNase in 'Mini-Citrus' plants ( S 7 S 8 and S 8 S 29 , Fortunella hindsii ), a model plant for citrus gene function studies. In vitro assays demonstrated interactions between SLFs of different S haplotypes and the Skp1–Cullin1–F-box subunit CgSSK1 protein. This study provides direct evidence that SLF controls the pollen function in Citrus , demonstrating its role in the 'non-self-recognition' SI system.

Abstract:Respiratory burst oxidase homolog (Rboh) family genes play crucial functions in development and growth. However, comprehensive and systematic investigation of Rboh family members in Rosaceae and their specific functions during pear pollen development are still limited. In the study, 63 Rboh genes were identified from eight Rosaceae genomes (Malus domestica, Pyrus bretschneideri, Pyrus communis, Prunus persica, Rubus occidentalis, Fragaria vesca, Prunus mume and Prunus avium) and divided into seven main subfamilies (I-VII) according to phylogenetic and structural features. Different modes of gene duplication led to the expansion of Rboh family, with purifying selection playing a vital role in the evolution of Rboh genes. In addition, RNA sequencing and qRT-PCR results indicated that PbRbohH and PbRbohJ were specifically high-expressed in pear pollen. Subsequently, subcellular localization revealed that PbRbohH/J distributed at the plasma membrane. Furthermore, by pharmacological analysis and antisense oligodeoxynucleotide assay, PbRbohH/J were demonstrated to mediate the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) to manage pollen tube growth. In conclusion, our results provide useful insights into the functions, expression patterns, evolutionary history of the Rboh genes in pear and other Rosaceae species.

Abstract:In pear (Pyrus bretschneideri), pollen tube growth is critical for the double fertilization associated with seed setting, which in turn affects fruit yield. The normal deposition of callose mediates the polar growth of pollen tubes. However, the mechanism regulating callose synthesis in pollen tubes remains relatively uncharacterized. In this study, we revealed that the typical pear pollen tube lifecycle has a semi-growth duration (GD50) of 16.16 h under in vitro culture conditions. Moreover, callose plugs were deposited throughout the pollen tube lifecycle. The formation of callose plugs was inhibited by 2-deoxy-D-glucose, which also accelerated the senescence of pear pollen tubes. Additionally, PbrCalS1B.1, which encodes a plasma membrane-localized callose synthase, was expressed specifically in pollen tubes and restored the fertility of the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) cals5 mutant in which callose synthesis is inhibited. However, this restoration of fertility was impaired by the transient silencing of PbrCalS1B.1, which restricts callose plug formation and shortens the pear pollen tube lifecycle. More specifically, PbrbZIP52 regulated PbrCalS1B.1 transcription by binding to promoter A-box elements to maintain the periodic formation of callose plugs and normal pollen tube growth, ultimately leading to double fertilization. This study confirmed that PbrbZIP52 positively affects pear pollen tube longevity by promoting callose synthesis. This finding may be useful for breeding high-yielding pear cultivars and stabilizing fruit setting in commercial orchards.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to examine whether S-RNase plays a specific role in the pre-germinated Pyrus pollen. Effects of exogenous RNase and endogenous S-RNase on concentration of cytosolic-free calcium ([Ca 2+ ] i ) variation of pre-germinated Pyrus pollen were studied. [Ca 2+ ] i variation caused by different RNases were complex. In 1 h after being cultured, exogenous RNase, RNase T 1 and RNase A, and endogenous incompatible ‘Hohsui’ RNase promoted the [Ca 2+ ] i of ‘Hohsui’ pollen. Acid proteins of ‘Hohsui’ had no remarkable influence on the [Ca 2+ ] i of self-pollen. Endogenous compatible ‘Kohsui’ RNase reduced the [Ca 2+ ] i of ‘Hohsui’ pollen, but compatible ‘Hohsui’ RNase can stimulate the [Ca 2+ ] i of ‘Kohsui’ pollen. RNase T 1 , RNase A and incompatible ‘Kohsui’ S-RNase can also make ‘Kohsui’ pollen [Ca 2+ ] i increase. Different from ‘Hohsui’ pollen, acid proteins of ‘Hohsui’ pull down the ‘Kohsui’ pollen [Ca 2+ ] i remarkably. Conclusion can be made that during the prophase of pollen germination, endogenous S-RNase has no specific effect on pollen [Ca 2+ ] i changes.
OsCNGC13 Promotes Seed-Setting Rate by Facilitating Pollen Tube Growth in Stylar Tissues.

Abstract:Seed-setting rate is a critical determinant of grain yield in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Rapid and healthy pollen tube growth in the style is required for high seed-setting rate. The molecular mechanisms governing this process remain largely unknown. In this study, we isolate a dominant low seed-setting rate rice mutant, sss1-D. Cellular examination results show that pollen tube growth is blocked in about half of the mutant styles. Molecular cloning and functional assays reveals that SSS1-D encodes OsCNGC13, a member of the cyclic nucleotide-gated channel family. OsCNGC13 is preferentially expressed in the pistils and its expression is dramatically reduced in the heterozygous plant, suggesting a haploinsufficiency nature for the dominant mutant phenotype. We show that OsCNGC13 is permeable to Ca2+. Consistent with this, accumulation of cytoplasmic calcium concentration ([Ca2+]cyt) is defective in the sss1-D mutant style after pollination. Further, the sss1-D mutant has altered extracellular matrix (ECM) components and delayed cell death in the style transmission tract (STT). Based on these results, we propose that OsCNGC13 acts as a novel maternal sporophytic factor required for stylar [Ca2+]cyt accumulation, ECM components modification and STT cell death, thus facilitating the penetration of pollen tube in the style for successful double fertilization and seed-setting in rice.
Ubiquitination of S 4 -RNase by S-LOCUS F-BOX LIKE2 Contributes to Self-Compatibility of Sweet Cherry ‘Lapins’

Abstract:Recent studies have shown that loss of pollen-S function in S4' pollen from sweet cherry (Prunus avium) is associated with a mutation in an S haplotype-specific F-box4 (SFB4) gene. However, how this mutation leads to self-compatibility is unclear. Here, we examined this mechanism by analyzing several self-compatible sweet cherry varieties. We determined that mutated SFB4 (SFB4') in S4' pollen (pollen harboring the SFB4' gene) is approximately 6 kD shorter than wild-type SFB4 due to a premature termination caused by a four-nucleotide deletion. SFB4' did not interact with S-RNase. However, a protein in S4' pollen ubiquitinated S-RNase, resulting in its degradation via the 26S proteasome pathway, indicating that factors in S4' pollen other than SFB4 participate in S-RNase recognition and degradation. To identify these factors, we used S4-RNase as a bait to screen S4' pollen proteins. Our screen identified the protein encoded by S4-SLFL2, a low-polymorphic gene that is closely linked to the S-locus. Further investigations indicate that SLFL2 ubiquitinates S-RNase, leading to its degradation. Subcellular localization analysis showed that SFB4 is primarily localized to the pollen tube tip, whereas SLFL2 is not. When S4-SLFL2 expression was suppressed by antisense oligonucleotide treatment in wild-type pollen tubes, pollen still had the capacity to ubiquitinate S-RNase; however, this ubiquitin-labeled S-RNase was not degraded via the 26S proteasome pathway, suggesting that SFB4 does not participate in the degradation of S-RNase. When SFB4 loses its function, S4-SLFL2 might mediate the ubiquitination and degradation of S-RNase, which is consistent with the self-compatibility of S4' pollen.
