Abstract:Foundation species such as seagrasses modulate critical ecosystem processes, promote biodiversity, and structure community spatial and temporal dynamics. Hence, they play a key role in mediating the response of biodiversity to environmental changes. The breadth of their contribution to biodiversity maintenance and the potential cascading effects of their alteration remain unclear as we lack a comprehensive understanding of the intricate mechanisms governing their response to environmental changes and that of their associated fauna. Indeed, the mechanisms involved are often studied in isolation or at scales that only provide incomplete representations of the complex functioning of these ecosystems. This study aimed to clarify the direct and indirect relationships linking the environment, seagrass, and their associated faunal assemblages, using structural equation modeling (SEM). To this end, we review the literature to derive theoretical models of the functioning of seagrass ecosystems and test them using long‐term monitoring data covering 14 years of nine different Zostera marina seagrass beds across 500 km of coastline. We show that contradictory relationships and ambiguities regarding seagrass–biodiversity relationships emerge from the currently available literature (covering experimental, observational, and modeling studies). The SEM approach allowed us to clarify these direct and indirect relationships and resolve most ambiguities. In particular, we show that seagrass mediates the effect of the environment on its associated communities. However, this mediating effect is different, both qualitatively and quantitatively, for epifauna and infauna. Unexpectedly, the diversity of benthic macrofauna appeared to be controlled and promoted by the biomass rather than by the shoot density of the seagrass beds. We also provide quantitative estimates for the direct and cascading pathways linking seagrass biodiversity to environmental changes. Overall, by synthesizing, clarifying, and quantifying the multiple relationships linking a foundation species such as seagrass to its environment and associated biodiversity, we contribute to a better understanding of seagrass meadows functioning and help predict the potential consequences of foundation species alteration on their associated fauna.

Abstract:Aim Biogenic structural complexity increases mobile animal richness and abundance at local, regional and global scales, yet animal taxa vary in their response to complexity. When these taxa also vary functionally, habitat structures favouring certain taxa may have consequences for ecosystem function. We characterised global patterns of epifaunal invertebrates in eelgrass (Zostera marina) beds that varied in structural and genetic composition. Location North America, Europe and Asia. Time Period 2014. Major Taxa Studied Peracarid crustaceans and gastropod molluscs. Methods We sampled epifaunal invertebrate communities in 49 eelgrass beds across 37° latitude in two ocean basins concurrently with measurements of eelgrass genetic diversity, structural complexity and other abiotic and biotic environmental variables. We examined how species richness, abundance and community composition varied with latitude and environmental predictors using a random forest approach. We also examined how functional trait composition varied along with community structure. Results Total species richness decreased with latitude, but this was accompanied by a taxonomic shift in dominance from peracarid crustaceans to gastropods, which exhibited different sets of functional traits. Greater eelgrass genetic diversity was strongly correlated with both richness and abundance of peracarids, but less so for gastropods. Main Conclusions Our results add to a growing body of literature that suggests genetic variation in plant traits influences their associated faunal assemblages via habitat structure. Because peracarids and gastropods exhibited distinct functional traits, our results suggest a tentative indirect link between broad‐scale variation in plant genetic diversity and ecosystem function.

Disentangling the effects of eutrophication and natural variability on macrobenthic communities across French coastal lagoons

Abstract:Coastal lagoons are transitional ecosystems that host a unique diversity of species and support many ecosystem services. Owing to their position at the interface between land and sea, they are also subject to increasing human impacts, which alter their ecological functioning. Because coastal lagoons are naturally highly variable in their environmental conditions, disentangling the effects of anthropogenic disturbances like eutrophication from those of natural variability is a challenging, yet necessary issue to address. Here, we analyze a dataset composed of macrobenthic invertebrate abundances and environmental variables (hydro-morphology, water, sediment and macrophytes) gathered across 29 Mediterranean coastal lagoons located in France, to characterize the main drivers of community composition and structure. Using correlograms, linear models and variance partitioning, we found that lagoon hydro-morphology (connection to the sea and lagoon surface), which affects the level of environmental variability (salinity and temperature), as well as lagoon-scale benthic habitat diversity (using macrophyte morphotypes) seemed to regulate macrofauna distribution, while eutrophication and associated stressors like low dissolved oxygen, acted upon the existing communities, mainly by reducing species richness and diversity. Furthermore, M-AMBI, a multivariate index composed of species richness, Shannon diversity and AMBI (AZTI’s Marine Biotic Index) and currently used to evaluate the ecological state of French coastal lagoons, was more sensitive to eutrophication (18%) than to natural variability (9%), with nonetheless 49% of its variability explained jointly by both. To improve the robustness of benthic indicators like M-AMBI and increase the effectiveness of lagoon benthic habitat management, we call for a revision of the ecological groups at the base of the AMBI index and of the current lagoon typology which could be inspired by the lagoon-sea connection levels used in this study.

Abstract:Coastal zones are biodiversity hotspots and deliver essential ecosystem functions and services, yet they are exposed to multiple and interacting anthropogenic and environmental constraints. The individual and cumulative effects of these constraints on benthic communities, a key component of coastal ecosystems, and their variability across space and time, remains to be thoroughly quantified to guide conservation actions. Here, we explored how the presence of biogenic habitats influences the response of benthic communities to natural and anthropogenic constraints. We investigated this effect in both intertidal and subtidal habitats exposed to different pressures. We used data collected in the North-East Atlantic over 15 years (2005-2019) as part of the REBENT monitoring program, covering 38 sites of bare sediments, intertidal seagrass beds and maerl beds. We collected a range of environmental variables and proxies of anthropogenic pressures and used variation and hierarchical partitioning with redundancy analyses to estimate their relative effect on macrobenthic communities. We used descriptors modeling spatial and temporal structures (dbMEMs) to explore the scale of their effects and potential missing predictors. The selected variables explained between 53 % and 64 % of macrobenthic β diversity depending on habitat and depth. Fishing pressures, sedimentary and hydrodynamics variables stood out as the most important predictors across all habitats while proxies of anthropogenic pressures were overall more important in intertidal habitats. In the intertidal, presence of biogenic habitat strongly modulated the amount of explained variance and the identity of the selected variable. Across both tidal levels, analysis of models' residuals further indicated that biogenic habitats might mitigate the effect of extreme environmental events. Our study provides a hierarchy of the most important drivers of benthic communities across different habitats and tidal levels, emphasizing the prominence of anthropogenic pressures on intertidal communities and the role of biogenic habitats in mitigating environmental changes.

Abstract:Understanding the relative importance of biotic interactions, multiple environmental drivers, and neutral processes in shaping community diversity and composition is a central question for both theoretical and applied ecology. We analysed a dataset describing 125 earthworm communities sampled in 10 localities in French Guiana. DNA barcodes were used to delimit operational taxonomic units (OTUs) that we considered as species surrogates to avoid the taxonomic deficit and calculate community-scale species richness and pair-wise Sorensen beta-diversity. We used log-ratio and generalised linear models to highlight the effects of biotic interactions and environment as drivers of alpha diversity, and generalised dissimilarity models to figure out the relative contribution of space and environment to beta-diversity at different spatial extents. Community-scale alpha diversity was mainly explained by habitat filtering (soil texture) and interspecific competition that limit the number of locally co-existing species. Beta diversity between pairs of communities was mainly explained by distance when comparing communities in similar habitats, by topography and available soil phosphorus when comparing communities in different habitats, and by distance, elevation and climate when comparing all possible pairs of communities. While community composition is determined locally by neutral processes and environmental filtering, biogeographic processes linked to dispersal limitation and adaptation to local environment are the most influential on a regional scale. This highlights the complex interplay of dispersal limitation, biotic interactions and environmental filtering during the process of community assembly.

Abstract:The present study describes macroinvertebrate assemblages in three Zostera noltei meadows, following a salinity gradient along the Aveiro lagoon (Portugal). The main environmental descriptors and Z. noltei biometrics were studied to provide a model of the multivariate macroinvertebrate assemblage structure. The macroinvertebrate assemblage structure in the meadow close to the lagoon opening was significantly different. This could be explained by its higher organic matter content and salinity values. Our model highlighted that 72% of the variation on macroinvertebrate assemblage structure was explained by the studied variables, being organic matter, salinity and sediment median grain size the most relevant factors. Moreover, the number of Z. noltei shoots, and cover of the invasive species Agarophyton aff. vermiculophyllum were also significant. The strong relationship between macroinvertebrates, environmental descriptors and Z. noltei biometrics validates the usefulness of macroinvertebrates as indicators of the seagrass condition in intertidal environments. This study provides baseline data that will be crucial to detect anthropogenic disturbances and preserve Z. noltei meadows, including their associated biodiversity. These data will also allow focusing on certain environmental factors and Z. noltei biometrics that have proved shaping the macroinvertebrate assemblages' structure.
Changes in maerl-associated macroalgal community dynamics as evidence of anthropogenic pressure

Abstract:Abstract Background and Aims Maerl-associated communities have received considerable attention due to their uniqueness, biodiversity and functional importance. Although the impacts of human activities are well documented for maerl-associated macrofauna, the spatio-temporal variations of macroalgae have comparatively been neglected, and the drivers that influence their dynamics are poorly known. We investigate the links between maerl-associated macroalgal communities, anthropogenic pressures and environmental conditions, and hypothesize that sites under human pressure would exhibit different dynamics when compared to reference site. Methods In order to better understand community variation through space and time, four subtidal maerl beds under different pressures were consistently monitored over one year in the bay of Brest, Brittany, France. Both macroalgae communities monitoring and environmental data were acquired through field sampling and available models. Key Results Higher macroalgal biomass was observed within eutrophic sites, especially in summer (more than 10 times higher than in Unimpacted site), caused by free-living forms of opportunistic red macroalgae. The Dredged site also exhibited distinct macroalgal communities during summer from the Unimpacted site. Nutrient concentrations and seasonality proved to be key factors affecting the macroalgal community composition, although dredging and its effects on granulometry also had strong influence. Over the long term, less than half of the species identified during historical surveys were found, indicating major temporal changes. Conclusions Human pressures have strong impact on maerl-associated macroalgal communities. Nutrient concentrations and dredging pressure appear as the main anthropogenic factors shaping maerl-associated macroalgal communities. Additionally, our results suggest historical changes in maerl-associated macroalgal communities over 25 years in response to changes in local human pressure management. This study suggests that maerl-associated macroalgal communities could be used as indicators of anthropogenic-driven changes in this habitat.

Abstract:Although the composition of invertebrate assemblages associated with kelps has motivated several studies in the recent past, little is known about assemblages associated with smaller, understorey macroalgae in these ecosystems. Here, the composition of invertebrate assemblages living within understorey macroalgae of a kelp (Laminaria digitata) forest has been studied over two sampling dates, and the structure of the food web investigated using stable isotopes. A total of 145 species of mobile fauna, mainly amphipods and gastropods, were identified. Although differences were date-dependent, we showed that the three species considered (Palmaria palmata, Mastocarpus stellatus, Ellisolandia elongata) sheltered different associated assemblages, including high host-specificity, which suggests that the animal diversity associated with rocky shores is enhanced by a high algal diversity. Overall, a dominance of gastropods was observed for the two-dimensional, leaf-like P. palmata, while the three-dimensionally structured species (M. stellatus, E. elongata) were characterized by a dominance of amphipods. Stable isotopes highlighted different trophic structures; E. elongata-associated assemblages were most likely relying on a dominant food source, sediment organic matter, while other assemblages were based on a wider diversity of food sources (algae, sediment, suspended organic matter). Our results illustrate the need to consider the microhabitats formed by understorey macroalgae in order to thoroughly assess the diversity and understand the functioning of coastal rocky ecosystems.

Eelgrass structural complexity mediates mesograzer herbivory on epiphytic algae

Abstract:Structural complexity mediates ecological processes such as predation, competition, and recruitment in marine systems, but relatively little is known about its effects on herbivory. In temperate seagrasses, such as eelgrass (Zostera marina), the primary herbivores are small crustacean and gastropod mesograzers that promote seagrass persistence by preferentially consuming competing epiphytic algae. We used a laboratory grazing experiment, a field colonization experiment, and stable isotope analysis to determine whether one component of eelgrass structural complexity, shoot density, dictates the strength of mesograzer top-down effects on epiphytic algae, and whether this is influenced by mesograzer community composition. Our results suggest that increasing structural complexity shifted eelgrass communities from a bottom-up to a top-down controlled system. In the lab, mesograzers reduced epiphyte standing stock only in high-shoot density experimental communities, though grazing impact varied among different combinations of dominant mesograzer taxa. In our field experiment, epiphyte biomass was inversely correlated with mesograzer density in high but not in low-shoot density eelgrass plots. High-shoot density plots contained lower epiphyte biomass despite housing lower densities of mesograzers, when compared to low-density plots, suggesting potential effects of mesograzer behavior, community composition, or self-shading on epiphyte growth. Our results suggest that structural complexity can strongly influence rates of top-down and bottom-up processes in eelgrass habitat, and should be incorporated into future experiments on the role of herbivores in seagrass ecosystems.

Abstract:Plant microbiomes depend on environmental conditions, stochasticity, host species, and genotype identity. Eelgrass ( Zostera marina) is a unique system for plant–microbe interactions as a marine angiosperm growing in a physiologically-challenging environment with anoxic sediment, periodic exposure to air at low tide, and fluctuations in water clarity and flow. We tested the influence of host origin versus environment on eelgrass microbiome composition by transplanting 768 plants among four sites within Bodega Harbor, CA. Over three months following transplantation, we sampled microbial communities monthly on leaves and roots and sequenced the V4–V5 region of the 16S rRNA gene to assess community composition. The main driver of leaf and root microbiome composition was destination site; more modest effects of host origin site did not last longer than one month. Community phylogenetic analyses suggested that environmental filtering structures these communities, but the strength and nature of this filtering varies among sites and over time and roots and leaves show opposing gradients in clustering along a temperature gradient. We demonstrate that local environmental differences create rapid shifts in associated microbial community composition with potential functional implications for rapid host acclimation under shifting environmental conditions.

Similar trait structure and vulnerability in pelagic fish faunas on two remote island systems

Abstract:The link between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning has been the topic of considerable research, but it remains unclear how biodiversity decline is compromising ecosystem functionality, particularly in the pelagic realm. Here, we explore how pelagic fish species diversity relates to functional diversity by sampling two locations, which, on the basis of biogeography, environmental conditions and human pressures, were expected to host pronounced differences in species composition and abundances and therefore functionality. Strings of five drifting mid-water Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems were used to survey pelagic vertebrate diversity and abundance in two isolated oceanic island systems, the Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary—a large, 25-year-old marine protected area—and an unprotected area in Cape Verde. Functional diversity, which offers insight into a community’s resilience against disturbance, was analysed using six key functional traits of marine fishes. Abundance was recorded as MaxN, the maximum number of individuals of a given species in a single frame during the 2-h deployment time. Cape Verde showed high overall abundance (Total MaxN 873) and low biomass (3559 kg), with a predominance of smaller fishes. Malpelo showed high biomass (7839 kg) but lower abundance (Total MaxN 465), with a predominance of large species. Species and functional diversity were marginally different between locations. Multivariate analysis of species relative abundances showed significant divergence between locations, although community functional traits overlapped strongly, suggesting that both communities share a similar structure and vulnerability. The existence of a common functional ‘backbone’ in diverging species communities across the oceans, under different productivity regimes, and under different protection levels, suggests that although pelagic communities may differ considerably in terms of species composition, this does not translate into a differing functional structure and resilience potential. Whether this vulnerability is a common feature of pelagic communities and how this contrasts with benthic systems warrants further research.

Influence of local environmental gradients on ecological strategies of herbaceous communities in riverine side channels

Abstract:Former and secondary arms concentrate strong environmental gradients and plant diversity at fine spatial scale. The role of disturbance and stress‐related parameters for community structure and ecological strategies was assessed. Results highlighted five structuring parameters for taxonomic composition. Interactions between them shaped ecological strategies. Moreover, sediment grain size and light deprivation along the inundation gradient were key drivers of niche homogenization. Questions In riverine side channels (secondary and former arms), the alternation of lotic, lentic and dry phases produces disturbance and resource gradients that filter species and community strategies. To better understand the impact of this alternation of functioning on plant communities at a fine spatial scale, we tested for the effects of elevation (linked to water level), slope, longitudinal position, light availability and sediment grain size on (i) taxonomic composition and (ii) competition, stress tolerance, and ruderal strategies (C, S and R strategies) at the community level. We hypothesized that fewer resources would increase the stress‐tolerant prevalence (i.e., community‐weighted mean value), while topographic gradients would affect ruderal prevalence. In addition, we hypothesized that strong and directional environmental filtering should reduce the co‐occurrence of species with different CSR strategy values (i.e., low C, S and R functional dispersion). Location Fourteen side channels on the lower reach of the Loire river (France). Results Taxonomic composition of the herb layer and environmental variables were assessed on 474 plots. The relations between species composition and environmental gradients were investigated by a constrained analysis of principal coordinates. The effects of environmental gradients on community CSR strategies were assessed using mixed‐effects models and a model‐averaging procedure. Results Taxonomic community composition was shaped mainly by light availability, topographic elevation and sediment grain size. Slope and the interaction between light and elevation influenced the community‐weighted mean and functional dispersion values of S and R strategies. Among other interactions, those involving sediment grain size shaped the dispersion values for C and R strategies. Conclusion The study identified shading and fine sediment grain size as key drivers of biotic homogenization in the riverscape. Increasing the disturbance frequency and magnitude would limit the progression of the ecological succession and favor the co‐occurrence of taxonomically and functionally diverse communities within the side channels.

Abstract:In a time of accelerated species and habitat loss, understanding and protecting species and habitats that contribute to biodiversity is critical. A unique strain of the widespread Irish moss ( Chondrus crispus ), the giant Irish moss, is found exclusively in an Atlantic Canada Marine Protected Area. This strain lacks a holdfast, but its strands entangle with blue mussels ( Mytilus edulis ) to create small complex habitats (clumps) surrounded by extensive bare sediments, which may contribute to local invertebrate biodiversity. This study used a field survey to examine the community of macroinvertebrates that colonize giant Irish moss-mussel clumps (IMBM) and blue mussel clumps (BM) in comparison to those colonizing bare sediments. In addition, a field experiment quantified colonization rates on clumps prepared with live mussels and giant Irish moss and on artificial mimics of both types of clumps. Two hypotheses were tested: that more complex habitats support higher levels of invertebrate diversity, and that living clumps support higher diversity levels than mimics. The results supported both hypotheses. The survey showed that the most complex habitats (IMBM) are colonized by more diverse and abundant assemblages than BM clumps and bare sediments, and that the three of them differed in species composition and abundance. The results of the field experiment showed that living clumps supported greater diversity and abundance than mimics for both IMBM and BM habitats. Overall, giant Irish moss-blue mussel associations provided the best habitat for diverse and abundant local communities, so efforts to restore these near extinct patchy habitats should be further supported.

Our current knowledge of BEF relies heavily on theoretical and experimental studies, typically conducted on a narrow range of spatio-temporal scales, environmental conditions, and trophic levels. Hence, whether a relationship holds in the natural environment is poorly understood, especially in exploited marine ecosystems. Using large-scale observations of marine fish communities, we applied a structural equation modelling framework to investigate the existence and significance of BEF relationships across northwestern European seas. We find that ecosystem functioning, here represented by spatial patterns in total fish biomass, is unrelated to species richness—the most commonly used diversity metric in BEF studies. Instead, community evenness, differences in species composition, and abiotic variables are significant drivers. In particular, we find that high fish biomass is associated with fish assemblages dominated by a few generalist species of a high trophic level, who are able to exploit both the benthic and pelagic energy pathway. Our study provides a better understanding of the mechanisms behind marine ecosystem functioning and allows for the integration of biodiversity into management considerations.
Similar Trait Structure and Vulnerability in Pelagic Fish Faunas on Two Remote Islands

Abstract:Abstract The link between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning has been the topic of considerable research, but it remains unclear how biodiversity decline is compromising ecosystem functionality, particularly in the pelagic realm. Here, we explore how pelagic fish species diversity relates to functional diversity by sampling two locations, which, on the basis of biogeography, environmental conditions, and human pressures, were expected to host pronounced differences in species composition and abundances, and therefore functionality. Strings of five drifting mid-water Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems were used to survey pelagic vertebrate diversity and abundance in two isolated oceanic island systems, the Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary – a large, 25-year-old marine protected area – and an unprotected area in Cape Verde. Functional diversity, which offers insight into a community’s resilience against disturbance, was analysed using six key functional traits of marine fishes. Cape Verde showed high overall abundance (Total MaxN 873) and low biomass (3,559 kg), with a predominance of smaller fishes. Malpelo showed high biomass (7,839 kg) but lower abundance (Total MaxN 465), with a predominance of large species. Species and functional diversity were marginally different between locations. Multivariate analysis of species relative abundances showed significant divergence between locations, although community functional traits overlapped strongly, suggesting that both communities share a similar structure and vulnerability. The existence of a common functional ‘backbone’ in diverging species communities across the oceans, under different productivity regimes, and under different protection levels, suggests that although pelagic communities may differ considerably in terms of species composition, this does not translate into a differing functional structure and resilience potential. Whether this vulnerability is a common feature of pelagic communities and how this contrasts with benthic systems warrants further research.

Abstract:Background Zostera marina (also known as eelgrass) is a foundation species in coastal and marine ecosystems worldwide and is a model for studies of seagrasses (a paraphyletic group in the order Alismatales ) that include all the known fully submerged marine angiosperms. In recent years, there has been a growing appreciation of the potential importance of the microbial communities (i.e., microbiomes) associated with various plant species. Here we report a study of variation in Z. marina microbiomes from a field site in Bodega Bay, CA. Methods We characterized and then compared the microbial communities of root, leaf and sediment samples (using 16S ribosomal RNA gene PCR and sequencing) and associated environmental parameters from the inside, edge and outside of a single subtidal Z. marina patch. Multiple comparative approaches were used to examine associations between microbiome features (e.g., diversity, taxonomic composition) and environmental parameters and to compare sample types and sites. Results Microbial communities differed significantly between sample types (root, leaf and sediment) and in sediments from different sites (inside, edge, outside). Carbon:Nitrogen ratio and eelgrass density were both significantly correlated to sediment community composition. Enrichment of certain taxonomic groups in each sample type was detected and analyzed in regard to possible functional implications (especially regarding sulfur metabolism). Discussion Our results are mostly consistent with prior work on seagrass associated microbiomes with a few differences and additional findings. From a functional point of view, the most significant finding is that many of the taxa that differ significantly between sample types and sites are closely related to ones commonly associated with various aspects of sulfur and nitrogen metabolism. Though not a traditional model organism, we believe that Z. marina can become a model for studies of marine plant-microbiome interactions.

Local adaptation in a marine foundation species: Implications for resilience to future global change

Abstract:Environmental change is multidimensional, with local anthropogenic stressors and global climate change interacting to differentially impact populations throughout a species' geographic range. Within species, the spatial distribution of phenotypic variation and its causes (i.e., local adaptation or plasticity) will determine species' adaptive capacity to respond to a changing environment. However, comparatively less is known about the spatial scale of adaptive differentiation among populations and how patterns of local adaptation might drive vulnerability to global change stressors. To test whether fine-scale (2-12 km) mosaics of environmental stress can cause adaptive differentiation in a marine foundation species, eelgrass (Zostera marina), we conducted a three-way reciprocal transplant experiment spanning the length of Tomales Bay, CA. Our results revealed strong home-site advantage in growth and survival for all three populations. In subsequent common garden experiments and feeding assays, we showed that countergradients in temperature, light availability, and grazing pressure from an introduced herbivore contribute to differential performance among populations consistent with local adaptation. Our findings highlight how local-scale mosaics in environmental stressors can increase phenotypic variation among neighboring populations, potentially increasing species resilience to future global change. More specifically, we identified a range-center eelgrass population that is pre-adapted to extremely warm temperatures similar to those experienced by low-latitude range-edge populations of eelgrass, demonstrating how reservoirs of heat-tolerant phenotypes may already exist throughout a species range. Future work on predicting species resilience to global change should incorporate potential buffering effects of local-scale population differentiation and promote a phenotypic management approach to species conservation.

Abstract:Despite the popularity of stable isotope analysis (Carbon and Nitrogen), the drivers of species isotopic niches and their consequences on food web functioning remained poorly described, especially in estuaries. Here, we hypothesised that species niche characteristics are influenced by ecosystem hydro-morphological features and the functional structure of fish assemblages. The trophic niches of four fish species (Dicentrarchus labrax, Pomatoschistus minutus, Sprattus and Platichthys flesus) and overlap between them were compared during two consecutive autumns in eight estuarine ecosystems of the northeast Atlantic Ocean. Our findings demonstrated a relative steadiness of trophic positions of fish in estuaries, despite a high level of interspecific variability. The seabass generally occupied the higher trophic position, followed by the sand goby, while the flounder and sprat were at the lowest position in the food web. Species isotopic niches and overlap were mediated by some estuarine features, including estuary size and intertidal extent, but also by biotic interactions at the intra- and inter-specific levels, as reflected by the influence of fish abundance and functional diversity metrics. Our results support the statement that the intertidal area is a pivotal factor in regulating trophic interactions, by promoting niche partitioning and diversification of trophic resources between species. Moreover, niche size and dietary divergence of species decreased with increasing regularity of trophic strategies within assemblages, suggesting that species occupied more restricted trophic niches when they were less subjected to competition for the same food resources. These findings emphasize the importance of local conditions and the functional composition of assemblages in modulating the trophic resources consumed by fish in estuarine environments.

Abstract:Seagrass form high productive ecosystems in coastal environments. However, the effects of these coastal plants on the structure and function of the belowground eukaryotic microbiome remain elusive. In this study, we characterized the community of microbial eukaryotes (microeukaryotes) in both vegetated and unvegetated sediments using 18S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing and quantitative PCR. Analysis of sequencing data showed that the eelgrass ( Zostera marina ) colonization decreased the alpha diversity indices of benthic microeukaryotes. Apicomplexa represented an average of 83% of reads across all samples, with a higher proportion at the vegetated sites. The taxonomic community structure was significantly different between these two types of sediments, for which the concentration of NH4+ in sediment porewater and salinity could account. Phylogenetic analyses of long 18S rRNA genes (around 1,030 bp) indicated these apicomplexan parasites are closely related to gregarine Lecudina polymorpha . Determination of 18S rRNA gene abundances provided evidence that the eelgrass markedly promoted the biomass of the gregarine and all microeukaryotes in the seagrass-colonized sediments and confirmed that the gregarine was hosted by a polychaete species. Significantly higher gene abundances of heterotrophs and mixotrophs were found at the vegetated sites, which could be explained by the finer sediments and short supply of dissolved inorganic nitrogen, respectively. The pigmented protists were more abundant in 18S rRNA gene copies at the lower and higher pH levels than at the intermediate. Nevertheless, the fractions of heterotrophs and phototrophs in the community were significantly related to porewater N:P ratio. These results indicate that seagrass colonization significantly induces an increase in overall biomass and a decrease in diversity of benthic microeukaryotes, making them more heterotrophic. This study also highlights that the hotspot of eukaryotic parasites could be linked with the high productivity of a natural ecosystem.

Abstract:Genetic diversity can modulate a population's response to a changing environment and plays a critical role in its ecological function. While multiple processes act to maintain genetic diversity, sexual reproduction remains the primary driving force. Eelgrass (Zostera marina) is an important habitat‐forming species found in temperate coastal ecosystems across the globe. Recent increases in sea surface temperatures have resulted in shifts to a mixed‐annual life‐history strategy (i.e., displaying characteristics of both annual and perennial meadows) at its southern edge‐of‐range. Given that mating systems are intimately linked to standing levels of genetic variation, understanding the scope of sexual reproduction can illuminate the processes that shape genetic diversity. To characterize edge‐of‐range eelgrass mating systems, developing seeds on flowering Z. marina shoots were genotyped from three meadows in Topsail, North Carolina. In all meadows, levels of multiple mating were high, with shoots pollinated by an average of eight sires (range: 3–16). The number of fertilized seeds (i.e., reproductive success) varied significantly across sires (range: 1–25) and was positively correlated with both individual heterozygosity and self‐fertilization. Outcrossing rates were high (approx. 70%) and varied across spathes. No clones were detected, and kinship among sampled flowering shoots was low, supporting observed patterns of reproductive output. Given the role that genetic diversity plays in enhancing resistance to and resilience from ecological disturbance, disentangling the links between life history, sexual reproduction, and genetic variation will aid in informing the management and conservation of this key foundation species.
