Abstract:Electronic waste (e-waste) contains valuable rare earth elements (REEs) essential for various high-tech applications, making their recovery crucial for sustainable resource management. This review provides an overview of the occurrence of REEs in e-waste and discusses both conventional and emerging green technologies for their recovery. Conventional methods include physical separation, hydrometallurgy, and pyrometallurgy, while innovative approaches such as bioleaching, supercritical fluid extraction, ionic liquid extraction, and lanmodulin-derived peptides offer improved environmental sustainability and efficiency. The article presents case studies on the extraction of REEs from waste permanent magnets and fluorescent powders, highlighting the specific processes involved. Abstract:Rare earth elements (REE) are considered critical metals due to their supply risk and growing demand in various industrial segments. Waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) is a potential secondary source for recovering REE which remains unexplored on a commercial scale. Moreover, the process lacks consolidated routes, and the literature has only studied the recovery of some of the 15 REE. This systematic review describes the conditions and procedures applied to fluorescent lamps, cathode-ray tube phosphors, neodymium magnets, nickel-metal hydride batteries, printed circuit boards, LED waste, and other secondary sources to identify the challenges and gaps of recovering REE. Yttrium, neodymium, and cerium are the most commonly recovered elements. With the highest concentration of REE in its composition, NdFeB magnet residues are the most investigated as a secondary REE source. The literature highlights the use of hydrometallurgical processes to recover these elements and sulfuric acid as the most used leaching agent. The absence of studies evaluating sequential processes to recover base metals and precious and rare earth elements is well known. Note also the lack of studies investigating recovery from a mix of different residues. Additionally, to make the process more attractive to the market, researchers must conduct studies on the scale-up and economic viability of these processes.

Abstract:Rare earth elements (REEs) are critical components of numerous products widely used in many areas, and the demand for REEs is increasing dramatically in recent years. Physical-chemical leaching is commonly adopted for the recovery of REEs from ores and solid wastes, but concerns over the generation of hazards, operation safety, and environmental pollution have urged the transition to greener and more sustainable leaching methods. Bioleaching is considered an excellent alternative for the recovery of REEs. This review provided an overview on the REEs recovery from primary and secondary resources via different bioleaching strategies. The techno-economics of bioleaching for REEs recovery were highlighted, and key factors affecting the economic viability of bioleaching were identified. Finally, strategies including the utilization of low-cost substrates as feedstocks, non-sterile bioleaching, recycling and reutilization of biolixiviants, and development of robust bioleaching strains were proposed to improve the economic competitiveness of bioleaching. It is expected that this review could serve as a useful guideline on the design of more economically competitive bioleaching processes for the recovery REEs from different resources.

Abstract:The increasing demand for modern technologies has led to a growing reliance on rare earth elements (REEs). To address this issue, recycling used products such as permanent magnet waste containing REEs. However, this approach necessitates the development of advanced extraction and separation techniques to ensure high yields and purity of the REEs extracted. This review provides an overview of the latest extraction and separation technologies, with a particular focus on the hydrometallurgical approach for extracting REEs from secondary sources, notably permanent magnets. Hydrometallurgy, which involves leaching followed by solvent extraction for purification, has gained widespread use for obtaining REEs from secondary sources, as evidenced by its reported high recovery efficiencies. We found that the recovery of REEs using chemical leaching varied between 80% and 99%, influenced by factors such as type of source material, leaching solvent, leaching conditions, impurities, reaction kinetics and solid-liquid ratio. However, effectively employing this process on a larger scale still faces certain challenges due to the excessive use of corrosive solvents for leaching magnet waste and the generation of toxic chemicals as end products in the form of leachate. Additionally, the current process exhibits deficiencies in the targeted recovery of REEs from magnet waste, specifically in achieving purity and selectivity by eliminating iron impurities. This article concludes that the future prospects for the selective recovery of REEs from neodymium iron boron magnet waste lie in green and environment-friendly solvents. One such approach revolves around the utilization of biodegradable organic acids and salt aqua regia for leaching. These solvents are less corrosive and have high dissolution efficiency, which results in less chemical consumption and an overall environment-friendly and cost-effective recovery process.

Abstract:The use of rare earth elements (REE) in many various fields, including high-tech products, increases the demand for these materials day by day. The production of REE from primary sources has expanded in response to increasing demand; however, due to its limited, a more sustainable supply is also started to offer for the REE demand by using secondary sources. The most commonly used metallurgical method for REE recovery is hydrometallurgical processes. However, it has some disadvantages, like pyrometallurgical methods. In the review, studies of the environmental impacts of REE production from primary sources and life cycle assessments of products containing REE were investigated. According to the results, it has been seen that those studies in the literature in which hydrometallurgical methods have changed to more environmentally friendly approaches have begun to increase. In this review, mine wastes, which are secondary sources, were defined, conventional methods of recovery of rare earth elements were discussed, greener approaches to the recovery of REE from these sources were comprehensively examined and studies in the literature were evaluated. Furthermore, it was stated that there are limited studies on green approaches and REE recovery from mineral wastes and that this field is developing with an emphasis on the current outlook and future perspectives.

Abstract:Rare earth elements (REEs) are among the important elements in various high-technological appliances globally. Recently, the recovery of REEs from the waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) has gained significant interest for the sustainability of global electrical and electronic industrial markets. The fast-evolving and rapid changing of technology has made many of these hi-tech equipment become obsolete with high disposal rates. Rising concerns over the depletion of REE sources have led to the need to extract and recover the REEs from WEEE. However, many studies still need to be carried out to optimize the recovery processes of the REEs in terms of the extraction methods employed and to minimize the environmental impact and hazard towards the flora and fauna. This review outlines the various REEs available in a wide range of electrical and electronic equipment, the various types of REE recovery methods, as well as their environmental impacts. The future perspectives and research directions in terms of the circular economy, policy and regulatory framework and research roadmap for REE recovery from WEEE are also discussed.

Abstract:Essential for smartphones, computers, batteries of hybrid and electric cars, medical scanners and weaponry, rare earth elements (REEs) play a pivotal role in every sphere of life globally. The race is on to develop alternative ways to utilize secondary sources, open new mines, reduce waste and recycle more. From being entirely dependent on China's REE resources, the researchers and entrepreneurs globally are working towards development of alternative strategies to explore their indigenous resources to be self-sufficient. However, the existing strategies to extract these valuables rely on usage of mineral acids/alkalis. Continued effort on development of sustainable leaching methodologies led to the exploration of organic acids as a potential alternative. Low-molecular-weight carboxylic acids and organosulphonic acids have emerged as highly potent class of lixiviants for REE extraction. The knowledge of their variation in chemical structure and their complex potency towards lanthanides is essential towards development of an industrially viable process. In this review, the efficiency of the different organic acids in leaching REEs from various primary and secondary sources, along with their respective structural relevance has been summarized. This is expected to ameliorate the existing momentum of advancing nature-friendly industrial processes.

Abstract:There is a growing interest in electronic wastes (e-wastes) recycling for metal recovery because the fast depletion of worldwide reserves for primary resources is gradually becoming a matter of concern. E-wastes contain metals with a concentration higher than that present in the primary ores, which renders them as an apt resource for metal recovery. Owing to such aspects, research is progressing well to address several issues related to e-waste recycling for metal recovery through both chemical and biological routes. Base metals, for example, Cu, Ni, Zn, Al, etc., can be easily leached out through the typical chemical (with higher kinetics) and microbial (with eco-friendly benefits) routes under ambient temperature conditions in contrast to other metals. This feature makes them the most suitable candidates to be targeted primarily for metal leaching from these waste streams. Hence, the current piece of review aims at providing updated information pertinent to e-waste recycling through chemical and microbial treatment methods. Individual process routes are compared and reviewed with focus on non-ferrous metal leaching (with particular emphasis on base metals dissolution) from some selected e-waste streams. Future outlooks are discussed on the suitability of these two important extractive metallurgical routes for e-waste recycling at a scale-up level along with concluding remarks.

The Role of Microorganisms in Mobilization and Phytoextraction of Rare Earth Elements: A Review

Abstract:Rare earth (RE) elements are a group of 17 chemical elements including the 15 lanthanides plus Yttrium and Scandium. RE have been identified as critical elements due to their special properties (e.g., catalytic, metallurgical, nuclear, electrical, magnetic, and luminescent) and various applications in many modern technologies, environment and economic areas. Thus, the demand for RE has increased significantly during the last decades. This demand has induced an increase in mining activities and consequently a release of RE into the surrounding environment, causing a potential threat to human health and the environment. Therefore, investigations leading to new solutions for the RE recycling from alternate resources like electronic, mining and industrial wastes, has been rapidly growing. In spite of that, recycling stays extremely difficult, expensive and is currently not seen as a significant solution. The concept of phytomanagement is a promising solution when conventional mining methods are no longer cost-effective, not to mention all the ecosystem services provided by plants. The phytoextraction service allows the extraction and recovery of RE from soils or industrial wastes (e.g., phosphogypsum from phosphoric acid production) with the prospect of economic added value. To date, some twenty hyperaccumulator plant species (almost ferns such as Dicranopteris dicthotoma ) accumulate high concentrations of RE especially in their erial parts. While the potential roles of native bacteria in mobilization of RE from ores remains slightly documented, those of Plant Growth Promoting Rhizobacteria (PGPR) is much less. PGPR are indeed able to mobilize metals and/or to stimulate plant development in the aim to increase the amount of RE extracted by the plant with then a higher phytoextraction efficiency. Yet to date, only a few studies have been devoted to RE using coupled bioaugmentation-phytoextraction. This review summarizes the data regarding 1) the source of RE (RE-accumulating sediments, soils naturally rich in RE, wastes) and their bioavailability in these matrices, 2) plants identified as RE hyperaccumulator and their potential for RE phytomining, 3) isolation and selection of indigenous bacteria stemming from RE contaminated matrices, such as soil, for their potential ability to increase phytoextraction performances and 4) bioaugmentation-assisted phytoextraction studies dealing with RE.

Abstract:Abstract Efficient and sustainable secondary sourcing of Rare-Earth Elements (REE) is essential to counter supply bottlenecks and the impacts associated with primary mining. Recycled electronic waste (E-waste) is considered a promising REE source and hydrometallurgical methods followed by chemical separation techniques (usually solvent extraction) have been successfully applied to these wastes with high REE yields. However, the generation of acidic and organic waste streams is considered unsustainable and has led to the search for “greener” approaches. Sorption-based technologies using biomass such as bacteria, fungi and algae have been developed to sustainably recover REE from e-waste. Algae sorbents in particular have experienced growing research interest in recent years. Despite its high potential, sorption efficiency is strongly influenced by sorbent-specific parameters such as biomass type and state (fresh/dried, pre-treatment, functionalization) as well as solution parameters such as pH, REE concentration, and matrix complexity (ionic strength and competing ions). This review highlights differences in experimental conditions among published algal-based REE sorption studies and their impact on sorption efficiency. Since research into algal sorbents for REE recovery from real wastes is still in its infancy, aspects such as the economic viability of a realistic application are still unexplored. However, it has been proposed to integrate REE recovery into an algal biorefinery concept to increase the economics of the process (by providing a range of additional products), but also in the prospect of achieving carbon neutrality (as large-scale algae cultivation can act as a CO 2 sink). Abstract:The need for rare earths elements (REEs) in high tech electrical and electronic based materials are vital. In the global economy, deposits of natural REEs are limited except for countries such as China, which has prompted current attempts to seek alternative resources of REEs. This increased the dependence on major secondary rare earth-bearing sources such as scrap alloy, battery waste, spent catalysts, fly ash, spent magnets, waste light-emitting diodes (LEDs), and phosphogypsum (PG) for a substantial recovery of REEs for use. Recycling of REEs from these alternative waste sources through hydrometallurgical processes is becoming a sustainable and viable approach due to the low energy consumption, low waste generation, few emissions, environmentally friendliness, and economically feasibility. Industrial wastes such as the PG generated from the production of phosphoric acid is a potential secondary resource of REEs that contains a total REE concentration of over 2000 mg/kg depending upon the phosphate ore from which it is generated. Due to trace concentration of REEs in the PG (normally < 0.1% wt.) and their tiny and complex occurrence as mineral phases the recovery process of REE from PG would be highly challenging in both technology and economy. Various physicochemical pre-treatments approaches have been used up to date to up-concentrate REEs from PG prior to their extraction. Methods such as carbonation, roasting, microwave heating, grinding or recrystallization have been widely used for this purpose. This present paper reviews recent literature on various techniques that are currently employed to up-concentrate REs from PG to provide preliminary insight into further critical raw materials recovery. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of the different strategies are discussed as avenues for realization of REE recovery from PG at a larger scale. In all the different approaches, recrystallization of PG appears to show promising advantages due to both high REE recovery as well as the pure PG phase that can be obtained.

Abstract:To meet society's demands for technologies that use rare earth elements (including those that allow a decarbonized society), we need to increase the volume and efficiency of extraction by mining and recycling. Microbial rare earth biochemistry offers numerous enabling biotechnologies to achieve this. Rare earth elements (REEs) are critical for our modern lifestyles and the transition to a low‐carbon economy. Recent advances in our understanding of the role of REEs in biology, particularly methylotrophy, have provided opportunities to explore biotechnological innovations to improve REE mining and recycling. In addition to bacterial accumulation and concentration of REEs, biological REE binders, including proteins (lanmodulin, lanpepsy) and small molecules (metallophores and cofactors) have been identified that enable REE concentration and separation. REE‐binding proteins have also been used in several mechanistically distinct REE biosensors, which have potential application in mining and medicine. Notably, the role of REEs in biology has only been known for a decade, suggesting their considerable scope for developing new understanding and novel applications.

Abstract:The escalating global demand for rare earth elements (REEs) and the overabundance of REE-containing waste require innovative technologies for REE recovery from waste to achieve a sustainable supply of REEs while reducing the environmental burden. Biosorption mediated by peptides or proteins has emerged as a promising approach for selective REE recovery. To date, multiple peptides and proteins with high REE-binding affinity and selectivity have been discovered, and various strategies are being exploited to engineer robust and reusable biosorptive materials for selective REE recovery. This review highlights recent advances in discovering and engineering peptides and proteins for REE recovery. Future research prospects and challenges are also discussed.

Abstract:Rare earth elements (REEs) are a group of critical minerals and extensively employed in new material manufacturing. However, separation of lanthanides is difficult because of their similar chemical natures. Current lanthanide leaching and separation methods require hazardous compounds, resulting in severe environmental concerns. Bioprocessing of lanthanides offers an emerging class of tools for REE separation due to mild leaching conditions and highly selective separation scenarios. In the course of biopreparation, engineered microbes not only dissolve REEs from ores but also allow for selective separation of the lanthanides. In this review, we present an overview of recent advances in microbes and proteins used for the biomanufacturing of lanthanides and discuss high value-added applications of REE-derived biomaterials. We begin by introducing the fundamental interactions between natural microbes and REEs. Then we discuss the rational design of chassis microbes for bioleaching and biosorption. We also highlight the investigations on REE binding proteins and their applications in the synthesis of high value-added biomaterials. Finally, future opportunities and challenges for the development of next generation lanthanide-binding biological systems are discussed.

Abstract:Recent advances in electrochemical methods show promise for more sustainable recycling of rare earth elements (REEs) from end-of-life NdFeB permanent magnets. Demand for NdFeB magnets is rapidly growing for clean energy applications, motivating recycling efforts to diversify REE supplies. Core electrochemical steps involve selective dissolution of REE-rich phases at the anode and reduction of REE ions at the cathode. Pretreatment including demagnetization, mechanical size reduction, and leaching help liberate and concentrate the REEs. Thermal demagnetization and mechanical crushing make the magnets brittle and improve leachant penetration. Acid leaching dissolves REEs but co-dissolves iron. To facilitate high-temperature recovery of REEs, molten salt electrolytes such as chlorides are utilized, whereas ionic liquids enable recovery under milder conditions, albeit with a caveat of potential decomposition during the process. Aqueous solutions have been most thoroughly investigated for versatility and affordability. Fluoride-based molten salt electrolytes effectively dissolve RREs and provide stable environments for high-temperature electrodeposition, enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of rare earth element recovery. Additional purification is needed to isolate high purity REE oxides and metals, using techniques like solvent extraction, selective precipitation, and electroseparation. Key factors for optimal electrochemical recycling are maximizing selectivity for REEs, minimizing energy use and waste generation, and simplifying integration. While technical challenges remain, recent advances demonstrate electrochemical technologies can improve the sustainability of recycling critical REEs from permanent magnets.

Abstract:The vulnerability of the rare earth element (REE) supply in a global context of increasing demands entails important economic and political issues, and has encouraged several countries to develop their own REE production projects. This study comparatively evaluated the production of REEs from primary and secondary resources in terms of their sustainability and contribution to the achievement of the Geoethics concept as responsibility towards oneself, colleagues, society, and the Earth system. Twelve categories of potential environmental and social impacts were selected: human health toxicity, global warming or climate change, terrestrial and aquatic eutrophication, acidification potential, particulate matter, resource depletion, water consumption, fresh water ecotoxicity, ionizing radiation, fossil fuel consumption, and ozone depletion. The results showed that the environmental impact of REE production from secondary sources is much lower relative to primary sources. A comparison of conventional and non-conventional REE resources showed that significant impact categories were related to particulate matter formation, abiotic resource depletion, and fossil fuel depletion, which could result from avoiding the tailings disposal before reuse. Based on these findings, governments and stakeholders should be encouraged to increase the recycling of secondary REE sources with Geoethics in mind, in order to balance the high demand of REEs while minimizing the overexploitation of non-renewable resources.
