Abstract:As one of the most efficient, low-cost, and readily available electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in alkaline environments, the nickel-iron electrocatalyst is of great significance to commercial water splitting. In this study, NiFe-layered double hydroxide loaded on nickel foam (NiFe-LDH/NF) was synthe-sized via a simple one-step hydrothermal method, whose OER catalytic performance could be successfully optimized by further electrochemical reconstruction. The results show that NF is an effective precursor to loading crystallized Ni(OH)2 nanoparticles during hydrothermal synthesis, leading to the generation of high-performance NiOOH during OER reconstruction. Under the optimal Ni:Fe feeding ratio, Ni2Fe1-LDH/NF requires an ultra-low OER overpotential of 239 mV at 50 mA cm-2 and 260 mV at 100 mA cm-2 , whose Tafel slope is only 64.1 mV dec-1. Impressively, Ni2Fe1-LDH/NF also achieves an ultra-low voltage of 1.44 V at 10 mA cm-2 with excellent long-term stability for overall water splitting. Unlike the previous viewpoint that only Ni species dominate surface reconstruction of NiFe-LDH, in this article the decisive influence related to Fe species on the reconstruction layers' activity and stability is confirmed by electrochemistry, Raman, and XPS analysis during reconstruction process. During OER reconstruction, the surface Ni:Fe ratios can be "self -adaptively" regulated to an appropriate region, thus the stable reconstruction layers rich in NiOOH can be formed as the protective shells for NiFe-LDH. Furthermore, such "self-adaptive" reconstruction, assisted with appropriate initial Ni:Fe feeding ratios, can also stimulate more Ni3+ active sites for OER, benefitting the outstanding catalytic performance of NiFe-LDH/NF for overall water splitting and prospective large-scale application.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:The electrochemical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) holds paramount significance as a pivotal stage within electrochemical water-splitting processes, particularly in hydrogen production. Highly efficient OER electrocatalysts with inherent capability to effectively lower the energy barrier and promote fast kinetics are in high demand. In this research, we have introduced a novel strategy of modifying the non-precious metal benchmark catalyst, NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH), through multiple oxyanions. Our approach involved incorporating MoS 4 2− as a source of modified anions to enhance the performance of LDH in OER. Under specific conditions of the hydrothermal reaction, a majority of the sulfur (S) within the MoS 4 2− anions underwent oxidization, resulting in the formation of SO 4 2− and MoO x S 4-x 2- groups. As a result, NiFe LDH composites that were modified with multiple oxyanionic moieties, were successfully fabricated. Thanks to the synergistic effects of these oxyanions, which accelerate the generation of active NiOOH species, the optimized NiFe LDH-MoS 4 -0.1/NF sample exhibited a significantly low overpotential of 228 and 270 mV at current densities of 10 and 100 mA cm −2 , respectively, along with a low Tafel slope of 35.5 mVdec −1 in 1 M KOH electrolyte solution. Our study underscored the importance of embracing diverse oxyanions modification strategy to amplify the performance of OER, opening up numerous opportunities for energy conversion and storage applications.

Abstract:Developing a high-performance and low-cost precious metal-free catalyst for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the key to solve the problem of hydrogen production via water electrolysis, but it is still faced with low energy efficiency due to slow dynamics. Herein, we report a novel and efficient (Fe,Mn)Ni2P-ECO electrocatalyst for OER through the artificially regulated reconstruction of the as-prepared Ni2P by the controlled electrochemical oxidation in an electrolyte containing Fe and Mn ions. The synergistic effect between Fe and Mn effectively promoted the formation of Ni and P oxidation states, reduced the Gibbs free energy of rate-limiting step, and promoted the formation of *O intermediate species. As a consequence, the developed (Fe,Mn)Ni2P-ECO shows excellent OER electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential of 207 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and 100 h stability at 20 mA cm-2. This work provides an effective strategy for designing efficient nonprecious metal OER catalysts for water electrolysis.

Abstract:Highly active, cost-effective, and stable electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is of primary importance in electrochemical water splitting. Although the direct growth of active components on the substrate is an effective strategy to enhance the catalytic activity, the weak adhesion between active material and substrate tremendously hampers their long-term utilization with excellent performance. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) hollow structure of NiFe-layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) on NiFe foam (NiFe LDH@NiFe) is designed via acid-corrosion-induced strategy. The self-supported electrode was obtained through a process based on an autologous NiFe foam, in which the electrode/gas/electrolyte interface and electrocatalyst/substrate interface are delicately engineered. Remarkably, the NiFe LDH@NiFe only needs an ultralow overpotential of 201 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) for OER in 1 M KOH electrolyte, along with superb stability. The high catalytic activity is attributed to the intimate connection between the nanosheet arrays and substrate, superior intrinsic activity, and fast electron transfer. More importantly, the excellent hydrophilicity and aerophobicity of NiFe LDH@NiFe enables significantly improved infiltration of electrolytes, quick release of oxygen bubbles, and remarkably enhanced charge transfer. Thus, the obtained NiFe LDH@NiFe holds promise for electrocatalytic applications. Finally, the growth mechanism of NiFe LDH@NiFe is investigated and discussed in detail.

Abstract:The inherent sluggish kinetics of water oxidation is the core issue for electrochemical hydrogen production from water splitting. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) with tunable porous structures, abundant coordination metal centers and large specific surface area are expected as efficient electrocatalysts. In this paper, FeNi-LDH/MOF composite nanostructures were successfully constructed on carbon cloth (CC) through partially converting iron-nickel layered double hydroxide (FeNi-LDH) into FeNi-MOF (NiFe(CN) 5 NO) by an in-situ semi-etching method. The MOF nanocrystals in this material are in-situ decorated on the surface of FeNi-LDH nanosheets, providing abundant open active sites and mass transfer channels for electrocatalysis. Thanks to the synergistic effect of the LDH and MOF, as well as the exceptional hierarchical architecture, the FeNi-LDH/MOF/CC as a self-supported electrode exhibits distinguished electrocatalytic OER performance, with a low overpotential of 263 mV@100 mA cm −2 and a small Tafel slope of 50.2 mV dec -1 in 1.0 M KOH. In addition, the catalyst exhibits good durability with almost constant current density during 24 h OER test. This work provides an effective way to design high-performance MOFs-based composite electrocatalytic materials.

Abstract:Rational construction of efficient and stable transition-metal (TM)-based electrocatalysts for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is extraordinarily favored and crucial to water/seawater splitting. Interface and heteroatom engineering are powerful strategies for improving the performance of the OER. Herein, we report a unique hydroxide/oxide heterostructure catalyst with P doping (Ni(OH)2/NiFe2O4–P) by an in situ growth strategy, following low-temperature phosphorylation for boosting water oxidation. The Ni(OH)2/NiFe2O4–P electrode, featuring an abundance of nanosheets, provides a greater number of functional active boundaries and enhances contact with the electrolyte for accelerated charge transfer. The incorporation of a P anionic modulator induces electron redistribution at heterogeneous interfaces, thereby tailoring the strong metal–anion interactions. Detailed electrochemical analysis further demonstrates that the Ni(OH)2/NiFe2O4–P heterostructure is an outstanding OER electrocatalyst, presenting low overpotentials of 224, 253, and 274 mV at 100 mA cm–2 in alkaline solution, alkaline simulated seawater, and alkaline natural seawater, respectively. The cell voltage of the assembled two-electrode electrolyzer (Pt/C ∥ Ni(OH)2/NiFe2O4–P) to deliver 10 mA cm–2 is only 1.62 V and can operate reliably for 150 h in an alkaline electrolyte.

Abstract:Water splitting by electrolysis is an environmentally friendly and promising method to gain hydrogen energy. Since both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) process and hydrogen evolution reaction process of electrolysis are kinetically sluggish and need to overcome a large potential barrier, it is imperative, especially for the poor kinetic OER, to explore available electrocatalytic materials. Here, this paper proposed a preparation of copper-doped nickel–iron-layered double hydroxide (NiFeCu LDH) with sheet-like nanostructure arranged perpendicularly to nickel foam matrix (NiFeCu LDH/NF) through a facile hydrothermal process. Benefitting from the combination with nickel foam and doping with copper, the poor conductivity of pure NiFe LDH is remedied and the quantity of exposed catalytic active sites on the electrocatalyst is increased. Hence, the as-prepared NiFeCu LDH/NF possesses outstanding OER catalytic capacity in 1.0M KOH, and when applying a mere overpotential of 183mV, it can convey a current density of 10mA cm −2 . Furthermore, both at 10 and 80mA cm −2 , this electrocatalyst could maintain long-term durability at least for 24h. In our preparation, a simple approach was applied to bolster the OER catalytic performance of electrocatalysts based on NiFe LDH.

Abstract:Background Tumor-to-liver contrast is low in images of chronically diseased livers because gadolinium-based hepatocyte-specific contrast agents (Gd-EOB-DTPA) accumulate less to hepatocytes. Purpose To determine whether phase-sensitive inversion recovery (PSIR) could improve the T1 contrasts of Gd-based contrast agents and liver parenchyma and simultaneously provide accurate T1 values for abdominal organs. Material and Methods The image contrasts of phantoms with different Gd concentrations that were obtained using PSIR were compared to conventional turbo field echo (TFE) results. T1 value was estimated using PSIR by performing iterations to investigate the two IR magnetization evolutions. The estimated T1 values were validated using IR-spin echo (IR-SE) and Look-Locker (L-L) sequences. In an in vivo study, the liver-to-spleen and liver-to-muscle contrasts of the PSIR and TFE images of seven volunteers were compared, as were the T1 values of liver parenchyma, spleen, and muscle obtained using PSIR and L-L sequences. Results The PSIR images showed T1 contrasts higher than those in the TFE results. The PSIR and IR-SE T1 values were linearly correlated. Additionally, the R1 estimated using PSIR were correlated with those measured using IR-SE and L-L. In the in vivo study, the liver-to-spleen and liver-to-muscle contrasts of PSIR were significantly higher than those obtained using TFE. T1 values of abdominal organs obtained using PSIR and L-L were clearly correlated. Conclusion PSIR may be capable of improving liver image T1 contrasts when Gd-based contrast agents are employed and simultaneously yielding accurate T1 values of abdominal organs.

Abstract:High-performance and cost-effective catalysts for water splitting are key components of hydrogen-based energy technologies. As a classical catalyst, NiFe-LDH is confirmed as the ideal answer to the dynamic slow oxygen release reactions (OER). While, how to take best advantage of the electrocatalyst came to a non-negligible challenge. Herein, NiFe-LDH/Ni 3 /CP electrode was assembled with Ni 3 as a juncture layer for optimized performance. An overpotential of only 233 mV was needed to drive a current density of 100 mA cm -2 , with a very low Tafel slope of 25.8 mV dec -1 and excellent durability of 150 hours. The superior performance was ascribed to the optimized conductivity, accelerated charge transfer kinetics and enlarged ECSA for the juncture layer of Ni 3 This work provides brand-new ideas for the rational design of electrodes for water splitting.

Abstract:Nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) is hindered in its further development in water splitting due to its slow kinetics of oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). In this study, the synthesis of OER (FeO(OH)/NiFe-LDH) and HER (Fe7S8(NiS)/NiFe-LDH) catalysts endowed with inherent electric fields exhibited exceptional electrocatalytic properties. The presence of the built-in electric field modulated the redistribution of electrons within the catalyst, while the formation of a heterostructure preserved the intrinsic characteristics of the catalyst. Moreover, this electron redistribution optimized the catalyst's adsorption of reaction intermediates (O*, OH*, OOH*, and H*) during the catalytic process, thereby enhancing the performance of both OER and HER. The electrolytic cell, equipped with these catalysts, achieved the current density of 10 mA cm-2 at a remarkably low potential of 1.409 V under industrial temperature conditions and demonstrated an ultra-long-term stability of 200 h.
Partial Sulfidation Strategy to NiFe‐LDH@FeNi2S4 Heterostructure Enable High‐Performance Water/Seawater Oxidation

Abstract:Ni2Fe‐LDH/FeNi2S4/NF is prepared by a partial sulfidation of Ni2Fe‐LDH/NF. Abundant hydroxide/sulfide interfaces boost the alkaline water oxidation. Impressively, cyclic voltammetry activation results in the formation of a sulfate layer that largely enhances the corrosion resistance of the catalyst in the alkaline salty‐water electrolytes. The development of a high‐performance electrocatalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is imperative but challenging. Here, a partial sulfidation route to construct Ni2Fe‐LDH/FeNi2S4 heterostructure on nickel foam (Ni2Fe‐LDH/FeNi2S4/NF) by adjusting the hydrothermal duration is reported. The heterostructures afford abundant hydroxide/sulfide interfaces that offer plentiful active sites, rapid charge and mass transfer, favorable adsorption energy to oxygenated species (OH− and OOH) evidenced by the density functional theory calculations, which synergistically boost the alkaline water oxidation. In the 1.0 m KOH solution, Ni2Fe‐LDH/FeNi2S4/NF exhibits an excellent OER catalytic activity with a much smaller overpotential (240 mV) to reach the current density of 100 mA cm−2 than single‐phase Ni2Fe‐LDH/NF (279 mV) or FeNi2S4/NF (271 mV). More impressively, 2000 cycles of cyclic voltammetry scan for water oxidation results in the formation of a sulfate layer over the catalyst. The corresponding post‐catalyst demonstrates better OER activity and durability than the initial one in the alkaline simulated seawater electrolyte. The post‐Ni2Fe‐LDH/FeNi2S4/NF delivers smaller overpotential (250 mV) at 100 mA cm−2 and longer stability time than the original form (260 mV). The post‐formed sulfate passivating layer is responsible for the outstanding corrosion resistance of the salty‐water oxidation anode since it can effectively repel chloride.

Abstract:A composition and structure‐modulated Ni3Fe layered double hydroxide (LDH) exhibits an optimal local chemical environment to trigger the oxygen evolution reaction. Compared with commercial Ir electrodes, the water electrolyzer fabricated by Ni3Fe LDH as anode shows superior current density, as well as a robust lifespan at 1 A cm–2 for 400 h. Water splitting is an environmentally friendly strategy to produce hydrogen but is limited by the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop highly efficient electrocatalysts. Here, NiFe layered double hydroxides (NiFe LDH) with tunable Ni/Fe composition exhibit corresponding dependent morphology, layered structure, and chemical states, leading to higher activity and better stability than that of conventional NiFe LDH‐based catalysts. The characterization data show that the low overpotentials (249 mV at 10 mA cm–2), ultrasmall Tafel slopes (24 mV dec–1), and high current densities of Ni3Fe LDH result from the larger fraction of trivalent Fe3+ and the optimized local chemical environment with more oxygen coordination and ordered atomic structure for the metal site. Owing to the active intermediate species, Ni(Fe)OOH, under OER conditions and a reversible dynamic phase transition during the cycling process, the Ni3Fe LDH achieves a high current density of over 2 A cm–2 at 2.0 V, and durability of 400 h at 1 A cm–2 in a single cell test. This work provides insights into the relationship between the composition, electronic structure of the layer, and electrocatalytic performance, and offers a scalable and efficient strategy for developing promising catalysts to support the development of the future hydrogen economy.

Abstract:Nickel‐iron based layered double hydroxides (NiFe LDH) have attracted tremendous research and industrial interests for oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysis (OER). However, methodologies on simultaneous regulation of performance‐influencing factors remain scarce and their real synergistic effects are not clear enough. Herein, we report a versatile polyoxometallic acids (POMs) etching approach to ingeniously reconstruct NiFe LDH, including three dimensional morphological nanotailoring, Fe3+ and α‐Ni(OH)2 active species reconfiguration, creation of multiple Ni, Fe and O vacancies and intercalation of POM polyanionic clusters. Our experimental and theoretical data collaboratively unveil that control of the key performance‐influencing factors and their multiple synergistic mechanism dominantly contribute to the step‐like OER performance enhancement. The reinforced electrocatalyst is further produced with low cost and high performance up to Ф180 mm in diameter, showing its feasibility and advancement of the promising configuration of NiFe LDH‐PMo12(+) ‖ Ni@NiFe LDH(‐) for alkaline anion exchange membrane (AEM)‐electrode‐stack cells. Furthermore, to mathematically evaluate the evolution, a novel empirical formula is proposed for quantitative identification of structure‐activity correlations, which offers an opportunity for first and fast reliability on materials screening.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) plays a crucial role in hydrogen production through water electrolysis. However, the high overpotential and sluggish kinetics of the OER pose significant challenges. Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) have been widely used as highly active electrocatalysts to tackle these issues. To further enhance the catalytic activity of LDHs and optimize their composition and morphology, the rational design of highly efficient electrocatalysts is desirable. Considering the flexibility of heterogeneous structures in terms of their electronic structure and surface chemistry, this study employs a simple and effective hydrothermal synthesis method. By leveraging van der Waals (vdW) interactions, a heterostructure is constructed between nickel-iron bimetallic hydroxide (NiFe LDH) nanosheets and black phosphorene (BPene). The OER electrochemical test results demonstrate the superior electrocatalytic properties of the NiFe LDH/BPene heterostructure. The heterostructure exhibits remarkably low overpotential (180 mV) and Tafel slope (72.36 mV dec−1) at a current density of 10 mA cm−2. Furthermore, the stability test conducted for 30,000 s showed a current retention rate exceeding 93.00%. This work provides new perspectives into the electronic structure regulation of 2D heterostructures and highlights new avenues for tuning the electrocatalytic adsorption of emerging phosphorus-based materials.

Abstract:Electrochemical water-splitting is widely acknowledged as a renewable strategy for hydrogen production, but it is primarily constrained by the sluggish reaction kinetics of the anode oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In our study, we employ a fast room-temperature corrosion engineering strategy for the construction of a sulfur-doped Ni-Fe layered dihydroxide catalyst (S-NiFe LDH). With the assistance of a sulfur source, microsphere morphology with an ultra-thin lamellar surface cross-arrangement can be rapidly grown on the surface of an iron foam substrate, ensuring a substantial electrochemical interface. The composition of Ni species in the catalysts can be regulated by simply adjusting the amount of Ni2+ and reaction time. Functioning as an OER catalyst, the S-NiFe LDH demonstrates high activity and reaction kinetics, featuring a minimal overpotential of 120.0 mV to deliver a current density of 10 mA cm−2, a small Tafel slope of 39.5 mV dec−1 and a notable electrical double-layer capacitance (Cdl) of 31.3 mF cm−2. The remarkable electrocatalytic performance can be attributed to its distinctive three-dimensional (3D) structure and sulfur dopants, which effectively regulate the electrochemical interface and electronic structure of NiFe LDH. This work provides valuable insights for expeditious materials design.

Abstract:The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the efficiency limiting half-reaction in water electrolysis for hydrogen production, which necessitates the use of an efficient and cost-effective catalyst. Nonmetal and metal element codoping is an effective way to profoundly modulate the electronic structure of transition metal oxide catalysts and the interaction with oxygen (O) adsorbates, which are crucial forOER efficiency. Herein, a sulfur (S), phosphorus (P) and iron (Fe) element codoped nickel oxide (NiO), denoted as S,P-NiO(Fe), was prepared as an OER catalyst, wherein the incorporation of P and Fe played significant roles in regulating the electronic structure of the NiO motif and reducing the activation barrier of the rate-determining step (RDS) during the OER process, thus substantially enhancing the catalytic capability. Concretely, the S,P-NiO(Fe) electrode displayed an overpotential of 230 mV at an OER response of 50 mA cm −2 , a low Tafel slope of 64 mV dec −1 and robust catalytic stability. Theoretical calculations showed that the incorporation of P and Fe downshifted the d-band center position, which mediated the adsorptive interaction strengths of O-intermediates and reduced the activation barrier of the RDS (from *O to *OOH), whereupon the low energy pathway led to rapid OER kinetics. This work offers a viable tactic to improve the OER catalytic capability of metal oxides through metal and nonmetal element codoping.

Abstract:Rational morphology design and electronic structure modulation can facilely boost the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) of NiFe layered double hydroxides (LDHs). Herein, hierarchical trimetallic NiFeCe-LDH intercalated with citrate anions was synthesized via a co-precipitation method. The self-supported porous LDH nanosheets (PNs) with abundant active sites exposed contributed to robust structural stability while the intercalated citrate and the introduction of Ce ions optimized intrinsic activity by modulating electronic structure through 3d-4f electron interaction. As a result, PNs with an optimized Ni:Fe:Ce molar ratio of 2:0.7:0.3 exhibited the best OER activity of delivering 10 mA cm-2 at an overpotential of only 185 mV with a Tafel slope of 54.0 mV dec-1. Experimental and theoretical investigations further confirmed a strong 3d-4f electron interaction, dramatically improving the adsorption/desorption properties of the oxygen-containing intermediates. This work provides a strategy to develop high-performance electrocatalysts through the rational synergism of 3d-4f electron interaction and appropriate anion composition.

Dual-Ligand Synergistic Modulation: A Satisfactory Strategy for Simultaneously Improving the Activity and Stability of Oxygen Evolution Electrocatalysts

Abstract:The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is the bottleneck of water electrolysis for hydrogen generation. Developing cost-effective OER materials with a high value of practical application is a prerequisite to achieve extreme performance in both activity and stability. Herein, we report a "dual ligand synergistic modulation" strategy to accurately tune the structure of transition-metal materials at atomic level, which finally achieves satisfactory results for the unity between robust stability and high activity. Remarkably, the elaborately designed S and OH dual-ligand NiCo2(SOH)(x) catalyst exhibits an excellent OER activity with a very small overpotential of 0.29 Vat a current density of 10 mA cm(-2) and a strong durability even after 30 h accelerated aging at a large current density of 100 mA cm(-2), both of which are superior to most of the state-of-the-art OER catalysts so far. The density functional theory (DFT) calculations disclose that the synergy of OH and S ligands on the surface of NiCo2(SOH)(x) can delicately tune the electronic structure of metal active centers and their chemical environment, which results in optimal binding energies of the OER intermediates (*OH, *O, and *OOH) and a strengthened binding energy between metal and anion ligands, thus leading to an excellent intrinsically enhanced OER activity and stability, respectively. Meanwhile, the special nonmagnetism of NiCo2(SOH)(x) can significantly weaken the resistance of O-2 desorption on the catalyst surface, thus facilitating the O-2 evolution proceedings.

Abstract:Water electrolysis encounters a challenging problem in designing a highly efficient, long durable, non-noble metal-free electrocatalyst for both oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Here, in our work, a two-step hydrothermal reaction was performed to construct a hierarchal NiFe-layer double hydroxide (LDH)/CuS over copper foam for the overall water splitting reaction. While employed the same as an anode material, the designed heterostructure electrode NiFe-LDH/CuS/Cu exhibits excellent OER performance and it demands 249 mV overpotential to reach a current density of 50 mA cm-2 with a lower Tafel slope value of 81.84 mV dec-1. While as a cathode material, the NiFe-LDH/CuS/Cu shows superior HER performance and it demands just 28 mV of overpotential value to reach a current density of 10 mA cm-2 and a lower Tafel slope value of 95.98 mV dec-1. Hence, the NiFe-LDH/CuS/Cu outperforms the commercial Pt/C and RuO2 in terms of activity in HER and OER, respectively. Moreover, when serving as both the cathode and anode catalysts in an electrolyzer for total water splitting, the synthesized electrode only needs a cell potential of 1.55 V versus RHE to reach a current density of 20 mA cm-2 and long-term durability for 25 h in alkaline media. To study the interfacial electron transfer, Mott-Schottky experiments were performed, representing that the electron is transferred from n-type NiFe-LDH to p-type CuS as a result of creating the p-n junction in NiFe-LDH/CuS/Cu. The formation of this p-n junction allows the LDH layer to be more active toward the OH- adsorption and thereby could allow the OER or HER with a less energy input. This work affords another route to a cost effective, highly efficient catalyst toward producing clean energy across the globe.
