Abstract:Artificial Z-scheme system inspired by the natural photosynthesis in green plants has attracted extensive attention owing to its advantages such as simultaneously wide range light absorption, highly efficient charge separation and strong redox ability. In this paper, we report the synthesis of a novel all-solidstate direct Z-scheme photocatalyst of Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 by depositing Ag3PO4 nanoparticles (NPs) on CeO2/TiO2 hierarchical branched nanowires (BNWs), where the CeO2/TiO2 BNWs act as a novel substrate for the well dispersed nano-size Ag3PO4. The Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 photocatalyst exhibits excellent ability of photocatalytic oxygen evolution from pure water splitting. It is suggested that the Z-scheme charge transfer route between CeO2/TiO2 and Ag3PO4 improves the redox ability. On the other hand, the cascade energy level alignment in CeO2/TiO2 BNWs expedites the spatial charge separation, and hence suppresses photocatalytic backward reaction. However, it is difficult to realize a perfect excitation balance in Ag3PO4/CeO2/TiO2 and the composite still surfers photo-corrosion in photocatalysis reaction. Nevertheless, our results provide an innovative strategy of constructing a Z-scheme system from a type-II heterostructure and a highly efficient oxygen evolution catalyst. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Boosting Solar Photothermal Synergy for Efficient Overall Water Splitting Based on Mg, Al Codoped and Rh/Cr2O3/CoOOH Coloaded SrTiO3

Abstract:The synergistic coupling of light and heat in solar energy has attracted increasing research attention. In this work, both codoping and coloading were applied to SrTiO3-based catalysts to improve their solar photo and thermal conversion, respectively, and maximum productivities of 51.55 and 25.59 mmol.g(-1).h(-1) were achieved for H-2 and O-2 in photothermal synergistic water splitting. The yield of H-2 was nearly double that achieved via pure photocatalysis. In addition to many experiments and characterizations, DFT calculations were also performed to clarify the photothermal synergy. It was found that both the light absorbance and mobility of photoinduced carriers could be promoted by solar thermal effects in the material. Meanwhile, the energy barriers of the key steps were reduced with increasing temperature in the hydrogen production driven by solar photo effects. This work offers new ideas for designing catalysts for solar hydrogen production with photothermal synergistic strategies.
Ti, Zn Co-Doped Hematite Photoanode for Solar Driven Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation

Abstract:Although there have been many reports of metal doping to ameliorate the drawbacks of hematite as the photoanode for water oxidation, most of them focused on monometallic doping, and only a few of them payed attention to bimetallic doping. What is worse, the synergetic mechanism between two metal dopants was not sufficiently studied, especially the density functional theory(DFT) calculation. In this work, the n-type hematite was synthesized by introducing Ti dopant into hematite through the hydrothermal method, and dipping-sintering treatment was employed to further introduce homogeneously dispersed Zn dopant into that, forming the Ti, Zn co-doped hematite. Under the optimal condition, Tidoped hematite photoanode reached approximately 2-times enhancement of the photocurrent density compared with the pristine one at 1.23 V vs. RHE, while Ti, Zn co-doped hematite anode obtained another25% elevation. UV–Vis spectroscopy, Mott–Schottky plots, EIS analysis, photo-oxidation of hole scavenger(H 2 O 2 ), and DFT calculation were employed to understand the role of Ti, Zn dopant. Based on the obtained results, the synergetic mechanism of two dopants was discussed, i.e., the improvement of PEC performance of Ti, Zn co-doped hematite photoanode was possibly attributed to greater carrier density and improved charge separation efficiency at the surface of hematite. This work provides new strategy and understanding of the improvement of PEC performance of hematite by doping engineering.
Facile Construction TiO2/ZnIn2S4/Zn0.4Ca0.6In2S4 Ternary Hetero-Structure Photo-Anode with Enhanced Photo-Electrochemical Water-Splitting Performance

Abstract:Constructing hetero-junction on TiO2 is an effective way to overcome the fast charge recombination and slow charge transfer kinetics, but how to design the junction is still a significant challenge in photo-electrochemical (PEC) water splitting. In this study, a considerable improvement in PEC performance for TiO2 nanotubes was achieved following the introduction of a ternary hetero-junction through depositing ZnIn2S4 (ZIS) and Zn0.6Ca0.4In2S4 (ZCIS) in sequence via a facile hydrothermal method (TiO2/ZIS/ZCIS). The optimized photo-anode exhibited a photocurrent density of 1.07 mA cm(-2) at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), to be 3.96 and 1.25 times enhanced compared to that of TiO2 and TiO2/ZIS, respectively. Meanwhile, the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) and applied bias photon-to-current efficiency (ABPE) of TiO2/ZIS/ZCIS were also increased in contrast with its counterparts. The merits of appropriate band alignment of TiO2, ZIS, and ZCIS and fewer interface defects built an internal electric field among the ternary hetero-junction, leading to an enhanced conductivity and efficient interface charge separation. These results were supported by a series of photo-electrochemical measurements. Among others, the shortened average lifetime of photo-generated electron-hole pairs from 1.51 (TiO2) to 1.17 ns (TiO2/ZIS/ZCIS) according to time-resolved photoluminescence reveals that the charge carriers generated in TiO2 would have an additional decay pathway in the hetero-structure, which benefits for the charge separation. Our strategy could be extended to many low-efficiency semiconductors for the design and synthesis of effective photo-anodes in PEC water splitting.

Abstract:The design and synthesis of efficient photocatalysts for overall water splitting is a promising research topic. By reasonable modification, the hydrogen evolution photocatalyst can have the ability for overall water splitting. Both ZnIn2S4 and TiO2 have shown great potential in the field of photocatalytic hydrogen evolution, but their use for efficient overall water splitting is challenging. In this work, a Z-scheme heterojunction material of Cu-doped ZnIn2S4 composite TiO2 with rich oxygen vacancies was synthesized. Cu doping enhanced the light absorption, reduced the bandgap, and improved photocatalytic activity. In addition, the oxygen vacancies in TiO2 were conducive to the separation and migration of electron-hole pairs, and the construction of a Z-scheme heterojunction between ZnIn2S4 and TiO2 can also effectively promote the separation and migration of carriers. Therefore, the photocatalytic activity of this material was significantly improved and exhibited excellent overall water splitting activity without any sacrificial agents and co-catalysts. The optimized hydrogen and oxygen evolution rates were 589.64 μmol/g/h and 292.75 μmol/g/h, respectively. This work provided favorable evidence for metal element doping to promote the photocatalytic activity of composite heterojunction materials and provided a new strategy for the development of heterojunction photocatalysts for overall water splitting.

Abstract:Photocatalytic (PC) / Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting under solar light irradiation is considered as a prospective technique to support the sustainable and renewable H2 economy and to reach the ultime goal of carbon neutral. TiO2 based photocatalysts with high chemical stability and excellent photocatalytic properties have great potential for solar-to-H2 conversion. To conquer the challenges of the large band-gap and rapid recombination of photo generated electron-holepairs in TiO2, non-metal doping turns out to be economic, facile, and effective on boosting the visible light activity. The localized defect states such as oxygen vacancy and Ti3+ generated by non-metal doping are located in the band-gap of TiO2, which result in the reduction of band-gap, thus a red-shift of the absorption edge. The hetero doping atoms such as B3+, I7+, S4+/S6+, P5+ can also act as electron donors or trap sites which facilitate the charge carrier separation and suppress the recombination of electron-hole pairs. In this comprehensive review, we present the most recent advances on non-metal doped TiO2 photocatalysts in terms of fundamental aspects, origin of visible light activity and the PC / PEC behaviours for water splitting. In particular, the characteristics of different non-metal elements (N, C, B, S, P, Halogens) as dopants are discussed in details focusing on the synthesis approaches, characterization as well as the efficiency of PC and PEC water splitting. The present review aims at guiding the readers who want quick access to helpful information about how to efficiently improve the performance of photocatalysts by simple doping strategies and could stimulate new intuitive into the new doping strategies.

Abstract:Solar-driven photocatalytic hydrogen production from water splitting holds significant potential in addressing the energy crisis and environmental pollution. However, rapid recombination of photogenerated carriers and insufficient surface catalytic reaction kinetics hinder the photocatalytic process. Constructing the catalytic systems with multi-channel charge-separation can effectively alleviate those issues. In this work, ternary PdO@TiO2-Cu2O composites have been synthesized through precursor calcination and low-temperature reduction, where PdO and Cu2O nanoparticles couple with the TiO2 nanorods. Comparing to single TiO2, binary PdO@TiO2 and TiO2-Cu2O, the PdO@TiO2-Cu2O hybrid exhibits enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen production performance (5831 mu mol g(-1)h(-1)), with a hydrogen production rate more than three times that of single TiO2. Based on the band structures of TiO2 and Cu2O, along with the photochemical/electrochemical, in-situ EPR, Photoluminescence (PL) tests, and work function calculations, the formation of an S-scheme heterojunction at the TiO2-Cu2O interface under light illumination facilitates the recombination of electrons in the conduction band (CB) of TiO2 with holes in the valence band (VB) of Cu2O. In this regard, the established built-in electric field significantly accelerates the transfer of photogenerated charges while preserving their respective strong oxidation and reduction capabilities. Meanwhile, the introduction of PdO enriches the holes and further enhances the rate of charge separation. This S-scheme heterojunction with directional charge transfer and oxidation cocatalyst collectively form multi-channels of charge separation, optimizing charge migration and enabling efficient hydrogen production, thus improving the photocatalytic capability of pristine TiO2. This study provides a rational approach to construct efficient S-scheme heterojunction/oxidation cocatalyst multi-component catalytic systems for water splitting into hydrogen.
Synergistic effects of carbon doping and coating of TiO2 with exceptional photocurrent enhancement for high performance H2 production from water splitting

Abstract:The “one pot” simultaneous carbon coating and doping of TiO2 materials by the hydrolysis of TiCl4 in fructose is reported. The synergistic effect of carbon doping and coating of TiO2 to significantly boost textural, optical and electronic properties and photocurrent of TiO2 for high performance visible light H2 production from water splitting has been comprehensively investigated. Carbon doping can significantly increase the thermal stability, thus inhibiting the phase transformation of the Titania material from anatase to rutile while carbon coating can suppress the grain aggregation of TiO2. The synergy of carbon doping and coating can not only ensure an enhanced narrowing effect of the electronic band gap of TiO2 thus extending the absorption of photocatalysts to the visible regions, but also promote dramatically the separation of electron-hole pairs. Owing to these synergistic effects, the carbon coated and doped TiO2 shows much superior photocatalytic activity for both degradation of organics and photocatalytic/photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting under simulated sunlight illumination. The photocatalytic activity of obtained materials can reach 5, 4 and 2 times higher than that of pristine TiO2, carbon doped TiO2 and carbon coated TiO2, respectively in the degradation of organic pollutants. The carbon coated and doped TiO2 materials exhibited more than 37 times and hundreds of times photocurrent enhancement under simulated sunlight and visible light, respectively compared to that of pristine TiO2. The present work providing new comprehensive understanding on carbon coating and doping effect could be very helpful for the development of advanced TiO2 materials for a large series of applications.

Abstract:Aiming to the unwanted photocatalytic hydrogen production systems using sacrifice agents, a well-design S-scheme O-ZnIn2S4/TiO2- x heterojunction was fabricated to realize photocatalytic hydrogen production via water reduction coupled with organic oxidative dehydrogenation. As supported by DFT calculations and experimental analysis, owing to the synergistic effect of oxygen defect and doping engineering, a tailored energy band structure alignment with higher redox potentials and larger Fermi level potential difference are achieved, resulting in more efficient S-scheme interface charge transfer and separation efficiency, thus improving the photocatalytic activity of O-ZnIn2S4/TiO2- x . The optimal O-ZnIn2S4/TiO2- x photocatalyst shows remarkable H2 and benzaldehyde production rate of 2584.9 μmol g-1h−1 and 2880.5 μmol g-1h−1 under visible light, which are 52.5 and 66.4 times as high as those over blank TiO2. Interestingly, this coupled reaction system also displays superior H2 evolution activity compared to sacrificial reagent systems of Na2SO3/Na2S and triethanolamine. Further quenching and EPR experiments reveal that both water and organic molecules provide protons for H2 production.

Abstract:Acoustic stimulation vibrates the cochlear basilar membrane, initiating a wave of displacement that travels toward the apex and reaches a peak over a restricted region according to the stimulus frequency. In this characteristic frequency region, a tone at the characteristic frequency maximally excites the sensory hair cells of the organ of Corti, which transduce it into electrical signals to produce maximum activity in the auditory nerve. Saturating, nonlinear, feedback from the motile outer hair cells is thought to provide electromechanical amplification of the travelling wave. However, neither the location nor the extent of the source of amplification, in relation to the characteristic frequency, are known. We have used a laser-diode interferometer to measure in vivo the distribution along the basilar membrane of nonlinear, saturating vibrations to 15 kHz tones. We estimate that the site of amplification for the 15 kHz region is restricted to a 1.25 mm length of basilar membrane centered on the 15 kHz place.
Mechanistic insight into the synergy between platinum cluster and indium particle dual cocatalysts for enhanced photocatalytic water splitting

Abstract:Photocatalytic H 2 production is envisioned as a promising pillar of sustainable energy conversion system to address the energy crisis and environmental issues but still challenging. Herein, a strategy is proposed to design a dual-metal cocatalysts consisting of Pt nanoclusters (Pt NCs) and In nanoparticles (In NPs) anchored on polymeric carbon nitride (Pt-In/CN) for boosting photocatalytic water splitting. As expected, the designed Pt-In/CN photocatalyst exhibits an impressive H 2 production rate of 6.49 mmol·h −1 ·g −1 with an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 33.56 % at 400 nm, which is 2.8- and 11.2-fold higher than those of the Pt/CN and In/CN, respectively. Combining experimental characterization with theoretical calculation demonstrates the synergistic mechanisms underpinning the enhanced photocatalytic activity. The Pt NCs and In NPs serve as photogenerated electron and hole trapping sites, respectively, which achieves the spatial separation of charge carriers and induces the polarized surface charge distribution, thus fostering optimal adsorption behavior of intermediates. More importantly, the p-block In NPs modulate the electronic microenvironment of Pt NCs to attenuate the adsorption behavior of H* intermediates for accelerated H 2 evolution kinetics. This work unveils a versatile strategy to regulate the electronic structures of dual-metal sites with synergy by establishing charge transfer mechanism for dual-metal cocatalysts.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2)-based photocatalysts are a class of hottest materials in solar water splitting, while limited achievements have been gained to date due to its broad band-gap only responding in UV region and sluggish charge transfer. Here, we reported a ternary TiO2-graphene-Ta3N5 hybrid photocatalyst synthesized via an ultrasonic-hydrothermal method. Compared with pristine TiO2 and Ta3N5, the prepared TiO2-graphene-Ta3N5 present remarkably enhanced photocatalytic pure water splitting behavior with an optimal H2-evolution rate of 180 μmol h−1 g−1. In conjunction with systematic characterizations, we demonstrated the boosted photocatalytic performance is ascribed to both improved visible light utilization and charge transfer behavior. Particularly, it is found that water splitting is achieved through a Z-scheme mechanism, in which the two-dimensional lamellar graphene served as a bridge accelerating the electron transfer from TiO2 to Ta3N5. This work opens avenues to design efficient TiO2-based photocatalyst by embedding conducting layer for rapid electron transfer during solar-fuel conversion.

Abstract:Narrow spectral response, low charge separation efficiency and slow water oxidation kinetics of TiO2 limit its application in photoelectrochemical and photocatalytic water splitting. Herein, a promising organic/inorganic composite catalyst Ag/PANI/3DOMM-TiO2–x with a three-dimensional ordered macro-and meso-porous (3DOMM) structure, oxygen vacancy and Ti3+ defects, heterojunction formation and noble metal Ag was designed based on the Z-scheme mechanism and successfully prepared. The Ag/PANI/3DOMM-TiO2–x ternary catalyst exhibited enhanced hydrogen production activity in both photocatalytic and photoelectrochemical water splitting. The photocatalytic hydrogen production rate is 420.90 μmol g–1 h–1, which are 19.80 times and 2.06 times higher than the commercial P25 and 3DOMM-TiO2, respectively. In the photoelectrochemical tests, the Ag/PANI/3DOMM-TiO2–x photoelectrode shows enhanced separation and transfer of carriers with a high current density of 1.55 mA cm–2 at equilibrium potential of 1.23 V under simulated AM 1.5 G illumination, which is approximately 5 times greater than the 3DOMM-TiO2. Abstract:Rational design and construction of highly effective Ti-based photoanodes with advantageous structures are crucial to enhance photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. In this work, we reported a CdS/Ti-Nb-O composite photoanode with satisfactory charge transfer and optical absorption for dramatically boosted PEC performance, which was constructed by bulk-phase Nb-doping synergistically with CdS quantum dots (QDs) sensitization of Ti-based oxide nanostructures. The composite system exhibited a remarkable photocurrent density of 16.11 mA cm- 2, which was 34 times higher than pure TiO2 (0.47 mA cm- 2). The electron lifetime was substantially increased and the solar-to-hydrogen (STH) conversion efficiency could be as high as 9.45%. Bulk-phase Nb-doping improved the conductivity of Ti-Nb-O, which enabled speedy and sustained charge separation in the composite-electrolyte solid-liquid interface. Meanwhile, CdS sensitization extended light absorption from 410 nm to 640 nm, thereby generating more photogenerated carriers. Simultaneously, Nb-doping negatively shifted the valence band (VB) and conduction band (CB) of Ti-Nb-O, which made the energy band more compatible with CdS. And the well-matched energy band structures of CdS and Ti-Nb-O not only improved separation-transfer properties of photogenerated electrons and holes but also increased overall optical absorption property of the composite system. This work involved dual-regulation charge separation strategy through bulk-phase doping synergetically with QDs sensitization may contribute to constructing high-efficient Ti-based photoanodes for PEC water splitting.

Metal-Free Boron Doped G-C3n5 Catalyst: Efficient Doping Regulatory Strategy for Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:Photocatalytic overall water splitting is a promising strategy for solving energy and environmental challenges. However, it’s usually restricted by two fatal drawbacks of photocatalysts: the conflict between the wide light absorption range and strong redox ability of photogenerated electrons and holes; and the fast recombination of charge carriers. Herein, based on the effective mass theory (EMT), we break the dilemma by designing the boron-doped g-C3N5 by the density functional theory simulation. The EMT indicates that the impurity levels in doped materials are dependent on the occupation of the atomic density of state at the doping site. We screen out two doping types to meet the needs of photocatalytic overall water splitting from 18 doping models. On the one hand, the suitable impurity levels induced by skillfully designed boron doping not only extend the light absorption range from ultraviolet to the visible light region, but also ensure the driving force of photogenerated electrons and holes for overall water splitting. On the other hand, the impurity states separate the photogenerated electrons and holes spatially which effectively suppresses the recombination of photogenerated carriers. Our research not only provides a promising photocatalyst of overall water splitting but also advances the development of doping strategy.
Interfacing CuO, CuBi2O4, and protective metal oxide layers to boost solar-driven photoelectrochemical hydrogen evolution

Abstract:This article reports the development of CuO|CuBi2O4 photocathodes stabilized by protective layers of TiO2, MgO, or NiO, with Pt or MoS2 nanoparticles serving as co-catalysts to facilitate H2 evolution. Most notably, this work demonstrates the first application of MgO as a protection/passivation layer for photocathodes in a water-splitting cell. All configurations of photocathodes were studied structurally, morphologically, and photoelectrochemically revealing that CuO|CuBi2O4|MgO|Pt photocathodes achieve the highest stable photocurrent densities of -200 μA cm−2 for over 3 hours with a Faradaic efficiency of ~90%. Bias-free tandem water splitting was then performed by pairing this photocathode with a dye-sensitized TiO2 photoanode, producing H2 from neutral water without an external bias. This paper demonstrates key stability findings and proposes the use of spin-coated MgO, TiO2, and NiO as feasible earth-abundant protective materials to aid in the formation of a cheap and scalable tandem water splitting system. Charge transfer dynamics have also been probed by combining spectroelectrochemistry and in-situ transient absorption spectroscopy.

Direct Z-scheme TiO2–ZnIn2S4 Nanoflowers for Cocatalyst-Free Photocatalytic Water Splitting

Abstract:Constructing direct Z-scheme heterojunction (DZH) is significant in improving the efficiency and stability of catalysts for photocatalytic water splitting (PWS). In this work, ultrathin TiO2 nanosheets were integrated into the growth of ZnIn2S4 to produce TiO2-ZnIn2S4 heterostructure nanoflowers. Both the matched energy band and (- )TiO2/(+)ZnIn2S4 internal electric field promote the formation of DZH. The prepared heterojunction holds the highest redox potential in the system, avoids the charge consumption from occurring in the electron mediator, and suppresses the recombination of photogenerated charges, leading to more separated electrons and holes. The formed DZH can consume residual photogenerated holes of ZnIn2S4 and enable water oxidation to occur solely at the TiO2 site, improving the overall stability of the system. The optimized DZH nanoflowers show enhanced PWS activity (214.9 mu mol g-1 h-1 for H2 evolution and 81.7 mu mol g-1 h-1 for O2 evolution without any cocatalyst and sacrificial agent) and excellent stability (50 h).

Abstract:Constructing heterostructures plays a critical role in promoting separation and transfer of photo-generated carriers, which offers great potential in photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. Herein, on the basis of an interesting structure–property relationship, this work provides an effective strategy to improve the photoelectrochemical performance. A hierarchical heterostructure of intercrossed Bi2S3 nanosheets on hydrogen-treated TiO2 nanorods is fabricated via a facile solvothermal method. By virtue of hydrogen treatment, H2-treated TiO2 nanorods (H-TiO2) exhibit a higher PEC performance than bare TiO2 owing to the better charge separation and narrower band gap. Moreover, boosted by the intercrossed heterostructure, the Bi2S3/H-TiO2 heterostructure achieves an optimal photocurrent density of 2.35 mA/cm2 at 1.23 V vs. reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), which is 16 times that of TiO2 photoanode. PEC studies demonstrate that benefitting from the efficient electron transfer and charge separation within the novel intercrossed heterostructure, it exhibits much better photoactivity than 0D nanoparticle under visible light irradiation. Furthermore, the Z-scheme heterojunction formed between hydrogen-treated TiO2 and Bi2S3 can not only enlarge the photo-response range, but also decrease the recombination loss of photogenerated charge carriers. The synergistic effect of hydrogen treatment, intercrossed heterostructure as well as Z-scheme heterojunction ensures the excellent photoelectrochemical performance of Bi2S3/TiO2 photoanode. Based on the exciting result, this work provides a reliable strategy towards the fabrication and application of low-cost and noble-metal-free nanorod-based hierarchical architecture for solar energy conversion.

Abstract:The main challenge for acidic water electrolysis is the lack of active and stable oxygen evolution catalysts based on abundant materials, which are globally scalable. Iridium oxide is the only material which is active and stable. However, Ir is extremely rare. While both active materials and stable materials exist, those that are active are usually not stable and vice versa. In this work, we present a new design strategy for activating stable materials originally deemed unsuitable due to a semiconducting nature and wide band gap energy. These stable semiconductors cannot change oxidation state under the relevant reaction conditions. Based on DFT calculations, we find that adding an n-type dopant facilitates oxygen binding on semiconductor surfaces. The binding is, however, strong and prevents further binding or desorption of oxygen. By combining both n-type and p-type dopants, the reactivity can be tuned so that oxygen can be adsorbed and desorbed under reaction conditions. The tuning results from the electrostatic interactions between the dopants as well as between the dopants and the binding site. This concept is experimentally verified on TiO2 by co-substituting with different pairs of n- and p-type dopants. Our findings suggest that the co-substitution approach can be used to activate stable materials, with no intrinsic oxygen evolution activity, to design new catalysts for acid water electrolysis.
