Abstract:Background: COVID-19 forced nurse educators across the world to rapidly shift clinical experiences from face-to-face to the virtual world without identification of best practices to guide this transition. Purpose: The purpose of this review was to identify best practices in virtual clinical experiences for undergraduate and graduate nursing students using the Community of Inquiry model as a framework. Method: A scoping review was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute Scoping Review process. Ten databases were searched systematically for literature related to virtual nursing student clinical experiences. The 36 articles retained for review were appraised using evidence-based rapid critical appraisal tools. Results: The literature suggests virtual clinical experiences may positively impact clinical reasoning and judgement; knowledge gain, retention, and application; affective learning; communication and teamwork; competence; engagement; confidence; and satisfaction. However, increased anxiety, frustration with technology and access, difficulty asking questions, and increased cost were reported. Additional considerations included appropriate faculty training, student support, and accreditation and board certification requirements. Standards related to virtual clinical experiences and simulation for advanced practice registered nurses needs further study. Conclusion: Virtual clinical experiences resulted in positive student learning outcomes. Through the provision of quality virtual clinical experiences, nurse educators have the potential to maximize student learning and professional growth.
Supporting engagement and retention of online and blended-learning students: A qualitative study from an Australian University

Abstract:Enrolment numbers in online higher education courses have continued to increase over the last decade. The challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic have further accelerated the growth in online and blended course offerings. The development of institutional support services, however, does not reflect this growth. Many students are not equipped with the skills or given adequate support to engage and succeed in their courses, leading to student disengagement and attrition. This study investigated the perceptions of students in online and blended subjects, regarding both the academic and institutional support they were provided. The research team collected interview data from 41 online and blended-learning students and then analysed these data using an iterative thematic analysis approach. This article introduces the key findings with two models: one presenting support strategies at multiple levels within this university; the other presenting three key elements of subject-level teacher support, which were identified by the interviewees as the most significant, effective, and relevant support mechanism in this context. The findings will inform higher education institutions who aim to engage and support online and blended students better, through an improved understanding of how support is perceived by this student cohort. This study was conducted at one Australian university; however, the findings are relevant to higher education institutions in other countries that strive to bring about positive experiences and enhance retention rates for online and blended students.

Identifying Dimensions and Components for the Enhancement of Virtual Educational Leadership in the Islamic Azad University Branches of Tehran Province Using Thematic Analysis

Abstract:Purpose: The primary objective of this article is to identify the dimensions and components for the enhancement of virtual educational leadership in the Islamic Azad Universities of Tehran province using thematic analysis. Methodology: The research method employed is mixed (qualitative-quantitative). In addition to document analysis, the thematic analysis technique with MAXQDA12 software was used to identify factors and components. The study population included all faculty members with at least an assistant professorship in educational management, higher education management, and educational technology, as well as administrators of Islamic Azad Universities, with theoretical saturation achieved after 15 interviews. Ultimately, base, organizing, and comprehensive themes were extracted, and in the quantitative section, structural equation modeling was used to determine the impact and ranking of the dimensions and components. Findings: Based on semi-structured interviews, four dimensions (knowledge of educational leadership in virtual environments, performance management and coaching in virtual environments, team leadership ability in virtual environments, ethical behaviors in virtual environments) and 24 components (organizing themes) were identified for virtual educational leadership in the Islamic Azad Universities of Tehran province. Subsequently, based on a researcher-made questionnaire, it was determined that the dimension of ethical behaviors in virtual environments with a coefficient of 0.905, team leadership ability in virtual environments with a coefficient of 0.879, performance management and coaching in virtual environments with a coefficient of 0.877, and knowledge of educational leadership in virtual environments with a coefficient of 0.805 are prioritized from first to fourth, respectively. Conclusion: The findings underscore the significance of adaptability, digital proficiency, and effective communication as pivotal traits for successful virtual leaders. Notably, the study also sheds light on the potential for gender to influence leadership effectiveness in virtual environments, with female leaders possibly having an edge in fostering collaboration and inclusivity.

Abstract:This systematic review broadly attempted to synthesize all relevant evidence residing in the Scopus, IEEE Xplore and MDPI databases, in order to inform the related Research Questions of this work. More precisely, the review protocol includes a broad and comprehensive search for eligible data sets from the Scopus, IEEE Xplore and MDPI databases, published from January 2017 to December 2022 by using inclusion/exclusion search criteria. Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument (MERSQI) was commissioned to assess and analyze the quality of 69 quantitative studies. The findings generally received positive feedback and there was a discussion about the results. This work was an original contribution guided by pedagogical theory and the validity of the evaluation constitutes a proposal for future improvement.

Abstract:Background and Aim: With the rise of digital tools, education has moved away from its traditional form and is advancing towards non-physical learning modalities. Distance learning leads to flexibility and easy access through digital media. Thus, the purpose of this study was to understand the lived experiences of students, teachers, and professors regarding the effectiveness of assessment in distance education. Methods: This qualitative research was conducted using a phenomenological approach. The method of data collection involved semi-structured interviews. For this purpose, data were collected through interviews with 30 students, teachers, and professors and analyzed using the method of Streubert and Carpenter (2003). Results: The analysis of the interviews revealed four main themes including support and backing components, content, infrastructure and ethical, and 22 subthemes such as technical support, enhancing the motivation of teachers and students, continuous training of teachers and students, improving computer literacy of students and teachers, overcoming teachers' resistance to virtual assessment methods, using interactive methods, focusing on learners' depth of thinking, timely and rapid feedback, attention to individual differences, familiarity with virtual assessment methods in teachers, adapting to virtual assessment methods in teachers, availability of electronic infrastructure, ensuring security of assessment in the virtual space, providing high-speed internet, quick and easy access to mobile or computer for students, digitalization of the entire assessment process, promoting the culture of virtual assessment among teachers and students, avoiding cheating due to anonymity, providing agreed-upon criteria and standards in assessment, considering students' backgrounds in virtual assessment, perceiving the student as the core of assessment, and connecting assessment to the student's environment. Conclusion: Given the above results, it is clear that performance assessment in non-physical education requires adherence to specific principles and components. Neglecting them can lead to the sterilization of this type of assessment.
Virtual global health education partnerships for health professional students: a scoping review

Abstract:Introduction: Although there is rising interest in virtual global health (GH) education in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been no report on the body of literature describing virtual education partnerships for health professional students. This scoping review examines virtual GH partnerships involving health professional students, including any barriers identified or best practices and ways to address them. Methods: We searched PubMed for studies describing virtual GH education partnerships using keywords related to GH, virtual learning, and partnerships. Inclusion criteria were that the activity was virtual, involved health professional students in two or more countries, and was reported in English or Spanish. In-person clinical electives and interventions that had not yet occurred were excluded. Study quality was assessed using the Medical Education Research Study Quality Instrument (MERSQI). Results: The search algorithm yielded 308 articles. Seventeen studies met full inclusion criteria. Four studies described asynchronous formats, whereas 13 were synchronous. Common challenges included scheduling challenges, language barriers, and technological limitations. Suggested improvements included having increased faculty support and expanding partnerships to multiple languages. The median MERSQI score was 8.25 out of 18 possible points. Conclusion: There are limited studies investigating the effectiveness of virtual GH education partnerships, and more robust evaluation is needed to further understand the optimal role of virtual education in teaching GH skills. Despite logistical challenges, virtual partnerships can provide innovative GH education through bidirectional educational exchanges that students find valuable.

Abstract:Background: Virtual reality has been gaining ground in health professions education and may offer students a platform to experience and master situations without endangering patients or themselves. When implemented effectively, virtual reality technologies may enable highly engaging learning activities and interactive simulations. However, implementation processes present challenges, and the key to successful implementation is identifying barriers and facilitators as well as finding strategies to address them. Objective: This scoping review aimed to identify the literature on virtual reality implementation in health professions education, identify barriers to and facilitators of implementation, and highlight gaps in the literature in this area. Methods: The scoping review was conducted based on the Joanna Briggs Institute Evidence Synthesis methodologies. Electronic searches were conducted in the Academic Search Elite, Education Source, and CINAHL databases on January 5, 2022, in Google Scholar on February 2 and November 18, 2022, and in PubMed database on November 18, 2022. We conducted hand searches of key items, reference tracking, and citation tracking and searches on government webpages on February 2, 2022. At least 2 reviewers screened the identified literature. Eligible studies were considered based on predefined inclusion criteria. The results of the identified items were analyzed and synthesized using qualitative content analysis. Results: We included 7 papers and identified 7 categories related to facilitators of and barriers to implementation—collaborative participation, availability, expenses, guidelines, technology, careful design and evaluation, and training—and developed a model that links the categories to the 4 constructs from Carl May's general theory of implementation. All the included reports provided recommendations for implementation, including recommendations for careful design and evaluation, training of faculty and students, and faculty presence during use. Conclusions: Virtual reality implementation in health professions education appears to be a new and underexplored research field. This scoping review has several limitations, including definitions and search words, language, and that we did not assess the included papers' quality. Important implications from our findings are that ensuring faculty's and students' competence in using virtual reality technology is necessary for the implementation processes. Collaborative participation by including end users in the development process is another factor that may ensure successful implementation in higher education contexts. To ensure stakeholders' motivation and potential to use virtual reality, faculty and students could be invited to participate in the development process to ensure that the educational content is valued. Moreover, technological challenges and usability issues should be resolved before implementation to ensure that pedagogical content is the focus. This accentuates the importance of piloting, sufficient time resources, basic testing, and sharing of experiences before implementation.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Background</h3><p>Contemporary healthcare systems are in dire need of teamwork and interprofessional collaboration, however, existing curricula of health education programs offer few opportunities to build these capabilities. Virtual simulations enable interaction and cooperative learning for students pursuing health majors.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Objective</h3><p>To explore the effectiveness of immersive virtual reality simulation (IVRS) in interprofessional education (IPE) and the experience of students from various disciplines in a virtual clinical environment.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Design, data sources and methods</h3><p>A scoping review was conducted. Literature was systematically searched from CINAHL, EMBASE, ERIC, MEDLINE/PubMed, ProQuest, PsycINFO, Scopus, Science Direct, Cochrane Library and Open Grey databases. Among 2,352 records, 12 research articles were found and analyzed.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Results</h3><p>The experiences of students participating in IVRS centered on enhanced cooperation and communication across their disciplines. They obtained a more accurate picture of the patient and developed an interdisciplinary care plan. After the IPE session, they had greater appreciation of the importance of a team approach and shared learning. Students acknowledged the usability of virtual worlds (VWs) and appreciated the immersive learning experience that was offered. They gained valuable insight into mutual roles and believed that this experience would benefit their role as a health care team member.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Conclusions</h3><p>This study supports the usability of VWs for IPE. As a new teaching modality, the IVRS experience effectively promotes interprofessional collaboration and communication. Future advances in the use of these technologies are expected to revolutionize health science education.</p>

Abstract:Virtual simulation (VS) as an emerging interactive pedagogical strategy has been paid more and more attentions in the undergraduate medical education. Because of the fast development of modern computer simulation technologies, more and more advanced and emerging VS-based instructional practices are constantly increasing to promote medical education in diverse forms. In order to describe an overview of the current trends in VS-based medical teaching and learning, this scoping review presented a worldwide analysis of 92 recently published articles of VS in the undergraduate medical teaching and learning. The results indicated that 98% of included articles were from Europe, North America, and Asia, suggesting a possible inequity in digital medical education. Half (52%) studies reported the immersive virtual reality (VR) application. Evidence for educational effectiveness of VS in medical students’ knowledge or skills was sufficient as per Kirkpatrick’s model of outcome evaluation. Recently, VS has been widely integrated in surgical procedural training, emergency and pediatric emergency medicine training, teaching of basic medical sciences, medical radiation and imaging, puncture or catheterization training, interprofessional medical education, and other case-based learning experiences. Some challenges, such as accessibility of VS instructional resources, lack of infrastructure, “decoupling” users from reality, as well as how to increase students’ motivation and engagement, should be addressed.

Abstract:Background: Electronic learning (e-learning) is a broader approach to learning that opens up new avenues for studying and teaching in many sectors of education outside of the standard classroom setting. This paper might enhance cultural competence among nursing students and the perspective of the lecturer. Methods: Literature databases of Cinahl "Ebsco", Pubmed, and Science Direct were searched, and 326 potentially relevant nursing research articles were reviewed between 2017 and 2022. Fourteen papers were found to meet the inclusion criteria. Results: Fourteen articles were included for scoping review, themes include blended E-learning, nursing students' e-learning readiness, and The challenges with the E-learning system. First: Blended learning may be a beneficial educational strategy in nursing education but it also requires a cautious and carefully planned approach with sufficient time for each student. Second: E-readiness is an important component of academic success, and prospective e-learning users' capacity to use a new learning environment, as well as alternative technologies, is referred to as e-learning readiness. In addition, continuous readiness assessment is required to ensure the successful deployment of e-learning. Thirdly, Accessibility is the most significant challenge students experience; many other issues also challenge e-learning, such as Infrastructure, Ineffective Time Management, and a lack of Instant Communication. Conclusion: E-learning, on the other hand, can provide an alternate mode of education, blended learning Proven to be effective as a modern learning method, students' e-learning readiness was a significant predictor of their satisfaction and motivation in the classroom, there are still concerns about the instructional veracity of e-Learning, as well as how to analyze and overcome hurdles and fears in e-Learning. Implications: Specialized implications for practical ramifications include strategic management planning, curriculum enhancement, and raising standards at the lecturer level in several specific areas.
Investigating the Social Sustainability of Immersive Virtual Technologies in Higher Educational Institutions: Students' Perceptions toward Metaverse Technology

Abstract:The Metaverse technology (MVTECH) is an immersive virtual sphere where people interact with each other via avatars. The MVTECH promised to provide a number of potentials for various sectors including higher education. Despite the fact that MVTECH promotes virtual social interaction between people (e.g., university students), there is a lack of knowledge on what affects users' perceptions regarding its social sustainability in HEIs, specifically in developing nations. Therefore, this research paper aims to determine the variables that affect the learners' perceptions toward social sustainability (SS) of MVTECH in higher educational institutions (HEIs) in Jordan. A study model was formulated by integrating the core factors of the "unified theory of acceptance and use of technology" (UTAUT) ("performance expectancy, PE; effort expectancy, EE; social influence, SI; and facilitating conditions, FC") with "perceived curiosity" (PC) and "extraversion" (EXT) factors. Both PC and EXT were included as context-related variables that may possibly contribute to enhancing the applicability of UTAUT to a wide range of information technologies and settings. Data were collected from 422 students enrolled in Jordanian universities based on an online survey. The analysis of the "structural equation modeling" (SEM) found that students' perceptions toward Metaverse were significantly influenced by PE, FC, and EXT. Furthermore, the PC construct significantly affected the EE construct. However, EE and SI were revealed to have no significant impact on SS. Drawing from these results, the study makes a number of theoretical advances and clarifies a number of practical implications for those involved in the development, design, and decision-making processes that support the use of the Metaverse in HEIs.

Use and Effectiveness of Virtual Simulations in Nursing Student Education: An Umbrella Review

Abstract:Computer-based virtual simulation in nursing is a rapidly developing field. A summary of current research could benefit nursing faculty who are incorporating this pedagogy into online teaching due to social distancing requirements. This umbrella review aimed to explore the use and effectiveness of virtual simulations in prelicensure nursing education. Our umbrella review approach was informed by The Johanna Briggs Institute guidelines. The 18 included reviews captured the experiences of over 7600 nursing students who engaged with five different virtual (screen-based) simulation modalities. Results indicated that virtual simulations can be effective in developing nursing students' knowledge and psychomotor and psychosocial skills, for example, in medication administration and communication. There was no study that showed a conclusive benefit of virtual simulations for developing clinical reasoning. Students enjoyed virtual simulations, claiming they were accessible, fun, and engaging ways to learn. Many benefits of virtual simulations and some technological challenges were identified in a mapped model. In the future, more rigorous and experimental studies are needed to confirm effects on learning outcomes. Nursing curriculum designers need to define the place and purposes of the pedagogy to ensure that knowledge and skills learned during virtual simulations can be applied to real-world, patient-centered care.
The impact of online education during the Covid-19 pandemic on the professional identity formation of medical students: A systematic scoping review

Abstract:Evolving individual, contextual, organizational, interactional and sociocultural factors have complicated efforts to shape the professional identity formation (PIF) of medical students or how they feel, act and think as professionals. However, an almost exclusive reliance on online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic offers a unique opportunity to study the elemental structures that shape PIF and the environmental factors nurturing it. We propose two independent Systematic Evidence-Based Approach guided systematic scoping reviews (SSR in SEBA)s to map accounts of online learning environment and netiquette that structure online programs. The data accrued was analysed using the clinically evidenced Krishna-Pisupati Model of Professional Identity Formation (KPM) to study the evolving concepts of professional identity. The results of each SSR in SEBA were evaluated separately with the themes and categories identified in the Split Approach combined to create richer and deeper 'themes/categories' using the Jigsaw Perspective. The 'themes/categories' from each review were combined using the Funnelling Process to create domains that guide the discussion. The 'themes/categories' identified from the 141 included full-text articles in the SSR in SEBA of online programs were the content and effects of online programs. The themes/categories identified from the 26 included articles in the SSR in SEBA of netiquette were guidelines, contributing factors, and implications. The Funnelling Process identified online programs (encapsulating the content, approach, structures and the support mechanisms); their effects; and PIF development that framed the domains guiding the discussion. This SSR in SEBA identifies the fundamental elements behind developing PIF including a structured program within a nurturing environment confined with netiquette-guided boundaries akin to a Community of Practice and the elemental aspect of a socialisation process within online programs. These findings ought to be applicable beyond online training and guide the design, support and assessment of efforts to nurture PIF.

Abstract:The virtual learning environment (VLE) is essential today and widely used globally for information exchange. Compared to in-person lectures, a VLE aids distant learning, although it might be challenging to maintain constant student interest. Academic activities are not actively pursued by students, which has an impact on their learning curves. The primary goal of this review is to impart a thorough knowledge and comprehension of various techniques, including machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), which are utilized for predicting student progress and performance and, consequently, how these prediction techniques help to find the most crucial student attribute for prediction. Additionally, this analysis reveals a rising trend in the volume and diversity of this field’s research. At the same time, the assessment revealed several problems with research quality that highlight the need for the community to strengthen efforts to validate and replicate work and to describe methods and outcomes in greater detail. It can help teachers, parents, students, and tutors decide on the appropriate learning support for their charges when taking online courses.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Medical curricula are constantly evolving in response to the needs of society, accrediting bodies and developments in education and technology. The integration of blended learning modalities has challenged traditional methods of teaching, offering new prospects in the delivery of medical education. The purpose of this review is to explore how medical students adapt their learning behaviours in a Blended Learning environment to become more independent and self-regulated, in addition to highlighting potential avenues to enhance the curriculum and support student learning.METHODS: Using the approach described by Levac <i>et al</i>. (2010), which builds on Arksey and O'Malley's framework, we conducted a literature search of the following databases: MEDLINE (Ovid), ERIC, EBSCO, SCOPUS and Google Scholar, utilising key terms and variants of "medical student', 'self-regulated learning' and 'blended learning'. The search yielded 305 studies which were further charted and screened according to the Joanna Briggs Institute.RESULTS: Forty-four studies were identified and selected for inclusion in this review. After full analysis of these studies, underpinned by Self-regulation theory, five major concepts associated with students' learning behaviours in a Blended Learning environment were identified: Scaffolding of instructional guidance may support self-regulated learning; Self-regulated learning enhances academic performance; Self-regulated Learning improves study habits through resource selection; Blended learning drives student motivation and autonomy; and the Cognitive apprenticeship approach supports Self-regulated learning.CONCLUSION: This review uncovers medical students' learning behaviours within a Blended learning environment which is important to consider for curricular adaptations and student support.

A scoping review to assess the effects of virtual reality in medical education and clinical care

Abstract:Due to the challenges and restrictions posed by COVID-19 pandemic, technology and digital solutions played an important role in the rendering of necessary healthcare services, notably in medical education and clinical care. The aim of this scoping review was to analyze and sum up the most recent developments in Virtual Reality (VR) use for therapeutic care and medical education, with a focus on training medical students and patients. We identified 3743 studies, of which 28 were ultimately selected for the review. The search strategy followed the most recent Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis for scoping review (PRISMA-ScR) guidelines. 11 studies (39.3%) in the field of medical education assessed different domains, such as knowledge, skills, attitudes, confidence, self-efficacy, and empathy. 17 studies (60.7%) focused on clinical care, particularly in the areas of mental health, and rehabilitation. Among these, 13 studies also investigated user experiences and feasibility in addition to clinical outcomes. Overall, the findings of our review reported considerable improvements in terms of medical education and clinical care. VR systems were also found to be safe, engaging, and beneficial by the studies’ participants. There were huge variations in studies with respect to the study designs, VR contents, devices, evaluation methods, and treatment periods. In the future, studies may focus on creating definitive guidelines that can help in improving patient care further. Hence, there is an urgent need for researchers to collaborate with the VR industry and healthcare professionals to foster a better understanding of contents and simulation development.

Abstract:The development of ICT has led to the use of simulation and visualisation (S&V) in various domains as a useful virtual interactive tool. Although there are many discussions and related studies on the relevancy of S&V in current applications, the tools and methods proposed do not sufficiently meet the needs of the different and dynamic users today. A literature study has identified five main components that may influence the STEM motivation among school children through the integration of S&V that are: a) Simulation and Visualisation for CAI; b) Motivation Level and Process; c) Green Environmental Data; d) Learning Outcome; and e) Adaption to Scenario. In this study, green environmental data are used as real scientific data. In order to validate the identified components, semi-structured interviews were conducted with three experts from different backgrounds, which are education, environment, and computer science. They were interviewed based on their experiences and the scope of their works. The interview aimed to gain in-depth information from the experts about the reliability and suitability of the identified components and the underlying elements. The design of the interview protocol and instrument is presented in this paper, which consists of demographics and background, application and factors that influence the usage of S&V, application and factors that influence motivation level and process, usage of environmental data, and current scenarios using S&V technique. Then, the interview data were transcribed, coded and categorised based on the identified themes. The result of the analysis reveals 17 groups of elements which further been The literature into 58 sub-elements.

Abstract:This scoping review was conducted to identify and describe constructs of frameworks and theories used to guide the design, implementation, and evaluation of simulation in nursing education globally, with a focus on their applicability to a low‐resource setting. Six electronic databases, three of which were on EBSCO Host (CINAHL, MEDLINE, ERIC), PubMed, Scopus, and ProQuest, as well as Google Scholar, were searched to retrieve studies published in English language between 2012 and February 2022. The review adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analysis extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA‐ScR) checklist, and was guided by Arksey and O'Malley's five‐step scoping review methodological framework (Scoping studies: Towards a methodological framework. International Journal of Social Research Methodology, 2005, 8(1), 19–32). Data was extracted from five studies (four frameworks and a theory) and narratively synthesized. Hence, seven constructs were identified and described: context, background, simulation design, educational practices, facilitator, participant, and outcomes. The four frameworks and theory were developed in the context of first‐world countries which reveals the lack of a context‐specific framework to guide the design, implementation, and evaluation of simulation in nursing education in low‐resource settings. Given resource limitations and the apparent gaps in applying simulation‐based framework(s) developed in first‐world countries to low‐resource settings, the findings of this review underscored the need for a context‐specific framework that is locally tailored to the needs and resources of low‐resource settings, to promote access to and use of simulation pedagogy in enhancing student learning, and the development of clinical competence.
