Abstract:The objective of this work was to evaluate the insecticidal and repellent effects of Eugenia uniflora (Myrtaceae) essential oil (EUEO) on Sitophilus zeamais (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and to identify the chemical compounds of this oil. Three experiments were carried out to evaluate the insecticidal effect (immersion of the insect, volatilization and spraying on corn grains) and one for the repellent effect. Different concentrations of EUEO (0; 0.31; 0.62; 1.25; 2.5; 5; 10%) were prepared. Seven plates (replicates) were prepared per treatment, containing 15 adult insects each. For the immersion of the insect and spraying experiment on corn grain, the evaluations were performed at intervals of 1; 6; 12; 24; 48; 72; 96 h. For the volatilization experiment, the evaluation was done at intervals of 12; 24; 48; 72 and 96 h, quantifying the dead insects. In the repellency experiment, the E. uniflora oil was evaluated at 2.5% in an arena consisting of five polyethylene containers. The evaluation was performed after 24 h, quantifying the number of insects in each container. In order to identify the chemical compounds of the EUEO, gas chromatography analysis was performed by mass spectrometer. In the immersion experiment, mortality was found at 10% concentration, differing significantly from the control. In the volatilization experiment, there was no significant mortality within and between the application times in any of the treatments. In the spraying experiment on corn grains, it was found that the concentrations 2.5%, 5% and 10% caused the highest mortality rates, respectively, of 85.71%, 100% and 100%, differing from the control. The 2.5% EUEO has a repellent effect for S. zeamais adults. Regarding the identification of the essential oil compounds, the major compounds identified were sesquiterpenes of Calamen-10-one and Silfiperferol-6-in-5-one. The EUEO spraying on corn grain has acute insecticidal and repellent effect on S. zeamais, and containing sesquiterpenes as major constituents.

Abstract:Introduction Worldwide, morbid obesity incidence has increased dramatically in the last decade and surgery is at this moment recognized as the only effective treatment with long-term sustained weight loss and resolution or significant improvement in comorbidities. Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG) was successfully carried out by several groups as a bridge to future laparoscopic bariatric procedures with acceptable weight loss and reduction in comorbidities. LSG is considered a safe procedure with sporadically reported complications, such as bleeding or leakage from the staple line, strictures, delayed gastric emptying, gastric dilatation and vomiting. The aim of this publication is to describe complications of this procedure analyze different treatments of these events especially the surgical ones, reporting the technical management based on our experience and on the literature. Material and Methods From March 2003 to December 2009, 294 patients underwent LSG in our Department. Complications are reported prospectively. Results In our series 294 patients were operated and stapler line leak was observed in 11 patients (3.7%). The mean time from the first surgery up to the first reintervention was 15.6±22 days (2 to 78). Only 2 patients (0.68%) had to be operated owing to severe reflux related with the sleeve gastrectomy and the symptomathology was solved with the gastric bypass. Intraabdominal bleeding was observed in 7 patients (2.38%), being reoperated 3 (1.02%) of them. All patients were reoperated by laparoscopic approach and the bleeding vessel was identified in all of them. We identified 3 of 294 patients with strictures (1.02%). One of them was located in the gastroesophageal junction and the other 2 had a central location. The patient with high stenosis required endoscopic dilatation and the other 2 were resolved by a gastric bypass cutting the stomach proximal to the stricture. The global mortality was 0%. All of the patients were reoperated by laparoscopy. Conclusion LSG is a feasible bariatric procedure carried out increasingly in the last few years with low postoperative complications. Regardless, the knowledge of the potential complications associated to LSG and their management is crucial for patient's safety.
An alternative to reduce the use of the synthetic insecticide against the maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais through the synergistic action of Pimenta racemosa and Citrus sinensis essential oils with chlorpyrifos

Abstract:Sitophilus zeamais attacks stored corn kernels and is traditionally controlled using synthetic pesticides. However, the frequent use of these toxic compounds leads to environmental and health damage and to the development of resistant insect populations. Essential oils (EOs) represent an alternative to conventional pesticides for pest control. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effect of the combination of EOs with chlorpyrifos against S. zeamais in order to reduce the effective applied dose of the synthetic insecticide. The most active EOs against S. zeamais were Rosmarinus officinalis, Pimenta racemosa var. ozua and Citrus sinensis. Moreover, all the binary mixtures (1:1 volume of EO/volume of EO) of these EOs (P. racemosa–R. officinalis, P. racemosa–C. sinensis and R. officinalis–C. sinensis) showed a higher fumigant activity and repellency than the individual EOs, with the combinatory index (CI) values of these binary mixtures indicating synergism for fumigant activity. The P. racemosa–C. sinensis–chlorpyrifos (16:1 volume of binary mixtures of EOs/volume of chlorpyrifos) combination had a lower LC95 value compared to the respective binary mixtures of EOs, revealing a synergistic effect. In addition, this combination did not produce phytotoxicity on maize grains. The binary mixture P. racemosa–C. sinensis in combination with chlorpyrifos synergized the effect of the synthetic pesticide without affecting germination of the maize grains. In addition, the use of this mixture (P. racemosa–C. sinensis–chlorpyrifos) decreased the net quantity of the synthetic insecticide, thus making it an interesting alternative for the control of the maize weevil S. zeamais.

Abstract:Essential oils (EOs) obtained from plants have the potential to be environment-friendly alternatives to synthetic insecticides in agriculture. Tribolium castaneum (Herbst) is a cosmopolitan pest that causes the loss of a major proportion of stored crops. Therefore, we studied the insecticidal and repellent effects of EOs derived from the plants viz . Eucalyptus rudis , Eucalyptus crebra, and Melaleuca genistifolia against larvae and adults of T. castaneum . Essential oils were derived from the leaves of each plant using hydro-distillation. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) of the extracted EOs revealed that eucalyptol, viridiflorol, α-terpineol, and eugenol methyl comprised the major components of the EOs. However, the composition and quantity of the compounds varied across EOs. Specifically, EOs derived from E. rudis exhibited the highest fumigation toxicity against adult and larval T. castaneum , followed by M. genistifolia and E. crebra. In the presence of wheat grains, fumigation toxicity against T. castaneum declined by nearly threefold. Contact toxicity assays revealed that EOs from E. rudis were overall the most effective against the pest (LC 50 : 0.392 μL/cm 2 for adult; LC 50 : 0.471 μL/cm 2 for larva) followed by M. genistifolia (LC 50 : 0.424 μL/cm 2 for adult; LC 50 : 0.478 μL/cm 2 for larva) and E. crebra (LC 50 : 0.471 μL/cm 2 for adult; LC 50 : 0.515 μL/cm 2 for larva). The LC 50 value of each EO was up to five times lower in adults than in larvae. Melaleuca genistifolia was the most effective repellent against T. castaneum adults; however, its effectiveness decreased with increasing exposure time. In conclusion, the EOs of E. rudis , E. crebra , and M. genistifolia were all viable green biopesticide alternatives to synthetic insecticides.

Abstract:The two-spotted spider mite, Tetranychus urticae, causes damage to crops grown in northeast Brazil. The adoption of biological control methods and curative methods (plant-based insecticides) is an essential practice for pest management in agroecological systems. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to investigate the chemical properties, toxicity, and ovicidal activity of essential oils (EOs) from Lippia sidoides, Croton rhamnifolioides, Croton grewioides, Citrus sinensis, Citrus limon, Citrus aurantiifolia and Piper divaricatum for the control of T. urticae and determine the selectivity of these EOs regarding the predator mite Neoseiulus californicus. The chemical analysis (gas chromatography–mass spectrometry) of the EOs enabled the identification of 98 compounds. The major constituents were carvacrol (L. sidoides), β-caryophyllene (C. rhamnifolioides), (E)-anethole (C. grewioides), limonene (Citrus spp.), safrole and methyl eugenol (P. divaricatum). All oils exhibited satisfactory toxicity to the eggs and females of T. urticae and were even more toxic than the commercial product Azamax. The L. sidoides oil exhibited greater toxicity compared to the other oils, with LC50 values of 0.05 and 0.09 μL mL-1 for females and eggs, respectively. All oils tested were selective to N. californicus, with RS values ranging from 3.61 to 23.28 for C. aurantiifolia and C. grewioides, respectively. Therefore, the use of products based on the EOs studied in combination with the natural enemy N. californicus is a viable option in agroecological systems for the management of T. urticae.

Abstract:This study was conducted to compare the repellent effect and contact toxicity of eight essential oils (EOs), including Syzygium aromaticum, Allium sativum, Eucalyptus camaldulensis, Lavandula officinalis, Simmondsia chinensis, Matricaria chamomilla, Citrus limon, and Prunus dulcis, against adults of Tribolium castaneum Herbst. Four concentrations (1, 5, 10, and 15% in acetone solvent) of each EO were tested. The 5, 10, and 15% concentrations of S. aromaticum EO had a high repellency effect against T. castaneum compared with A. sativum, E. camaldulensis, L. officinalis, S. chinensis, M. chamomilla, C. limon, and P. dulcis after 30 min of exposure. The repellency test of the S. aromaticum, E. camaldulensis, L. officinalis, M. chamomilla, C. limon, and P. dulcis EOs on T. castaneum has shown that the mortality percentages enhanced with the increase in the EOs concentration and also with the exposure time. The 15% concentration of P. dulcis and M. chamomilla EOs have a significant impact on the mortality rate of T. castaneum compared with S. aromaticum, A. sativum, E. camaldulensis, L. officinalis, and S. chinensis after the 24 h of contact test. Moreover, the 15% concentration of the C. limon EO caused a greater mortality percentage compared with S. aromaticum, A. sativum, E. camaldulensis, and L. officinalis. It could be concluded that using the S. aromaticum EO as a repellent oil and using P. dulcis, M. chamomilla, and C. limon for contact toxicity to treat the flour infested by T. castaneum can play an important role in protecting stored grains and their products.

Abstract:The risk of using synthetic insecticides to the environment, human health, and the emergence of new genera of pests resistant to that kind of drugs, have led to attention in natural compounds. The present study aimed at evaluating the insecticidal activity of 0.25–6 mg/cm2 of basil (Ocimum basilicum), black seeds (Nigella sativa), and lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oils (EOs) against one of the major stored product pests, Sitophilus oryzae (L.). This was done by assessing mortality and repellent percentage assay in the adult stage, as well as analysing up and down-regulated genes associated with toxicity effect of selected EOs. The three studied EOs showed a toxic effect on S. oryzae; where O. basilicum and L. angustifolia EOs explicated 100% mortality at 6 mg/cm2 after 48 and 24 h, respectively. The highest repellence activity was recorded for O. basilicum EO at 0.75 mg/cm2 with value 82.3% after exposure time 5 h. In the highest dose (6 mg/cm2), the maximum up-regulated expression level of detoxification DEGs genes (CL1294 and CL 8) and cytochrome p45o gene (CYP4Q4) in Lavandula angustifolia EOs exhibited 8.32, 6.08, and 3.75 fold changes, respectively, as compared with 4.76 fold at 10 ppm malathion and 1.02 fold change in acetone control.
Potential fumigant toxicity of essential oils against Sitotroga cerealella (Olivier) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) and its egg parasitoid Trichogramma evanescens (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae)

Abstract:Sitotroga cerealella is a serious pest of a wide range of stored cereal grains. An essential element of an integrated pest control approach is the application of plant oils as a substitute for chemical insecticides. This study aimed to investigate the fumigant toxicity of Allium sativum and Mentha piperita essential oils against S. cerealella adult moths and the egg parasitoid Trichogramma evanescens . Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analyses detected that Diallyl trisulfide (37.97%) and dl -Menthol (47.67%) as main compounds in A. sativum and M. piperita , respectively. The results showed that, A. sativum at 10.0, 5.0, and 2.5 μL/L air resulted in 100% insect mortality after 24 h exposure. The concentrations of 10.0 and 5.0 μL/L air of M. piperita oil resulted in 100 and 96% insect mortality, respectively. The parasitoid adult emergence in the F1 reduced when exposed to LC 99 of A. sativum and M. piperita oils by 10.89 and 9.67%, respectively. Also, the parasitism of emerged parasitoid decreased by 9.25 and 5.84% (class I-harmless), respectively. Therefore A. sativum and M. piperita have the potential to be used as bio-fumigant for the management of S. cerealella and can be used alongside the T. evanescens in integrated pest management.

Abstract:Studies on the effect of essential oils for the control of melon leaf miner adults (Liriomyza trifolii Burgess) and the phytoxicity on melon plants (Cucumis melo L.) were carried out under green house and laboratory experiments with the aim to find the effectivity of essential oils to control this pest. Essential oils (treatments) used in the tests belonged to the following plant species: Ocimum basilicum, Ocimum kilimandshanicum, Lippia alba, Ocimum gratissimum, Cymbopogon citratus, Ocimum micrantum, Lippia sidoides, Pipper aduncum, Citrus sinensis, Ocimum selloi and water as the control. In addition, two mixtures were evaluated: Mix 1 (Ocimum selloi + Pipper aduncum) and Mix 2 (Ocimum kilimandshanicum + Ocimum gratissimum). Each essential oil evaluated had the following dilutions: 0.125%, 0.25%, 0.5%, 1.0%, 3.0%, 5.0%, 7.0%, and 10.0%. The dilution 0.125% of Ocimum basilicum, Ocimum kilimandshanicum, Ocimum seloi, Cimbopogon citratus, Lippia alba, Peper aduncum and Mix 2 presented the best results by not causing any phytotoxicity damage to melon leaves. The other dilutions were significantly different from the pattern water. As result, the essential oil of the species Ocimum kilimandshanicum with 0.125% caused 100.0% of mortality to melon leaf miner adults and it did not cause any phytotocixity damage to melon leaves. Therefore, these results suggest that this essential oil presents a high potential to be a future commercially friendly product against melon leaf miner pest.
Chemical composition and repellent activity of essential oils from the leaves of Cinnamomum zeylanicum and Eugenia uniflora against Diaphania hyalinata L. (Lepidoptera: Crambidae)

Abstract:Diaphania hyalinata is an important pest in organic melon crops and has caused considerable harm to growers in northeastern Brazil. The aim of the present study was to determine the chemical composition of essential oils from Eugenia uniflora (pitanga) and Cinnamomum zeylanicum (cinnamon) as well as evaluate the repellant action, oviposition deterrence and effect on body mass caused by the oils and the constituents linalool and β-pinene in D. hyalinata. The essential oils from pitanga and cinnamon had a predominance of sesquiterpenes and phenylpropanoids, respectively. The pitanga oil was more effective as a larval repellent than the cinnamon oil and the constituents tested exhibited low repellent activity. In the evaluation of oviposition deterrence, the response of D. hyalinata exposed to the cinnamon oil did not vary with the distance between the treated and untreated leaf disks, but varied significantly when exposed to the pitanga oil. Linalool exhibited greater long-distance oviposition deterrence in comparison with β-pinene. In the experiments on body mass gain, second-instar larvae were more susceptible to the cinnamon oil than the pitanga oil and constituents tested. The findings suggest that these oils, especially the pitanga oil, could be an alternative for the control of D. hyalinata in the larval and adult phases. Further studies are needed to evaluate the effect on natural enemies and pollinating insects as well as the cost–benefit of the formulation of an insecticide for use on organic crops in northeastern Brazil.

Abstract:Abstract Corn crop, due to its easy adaptation to the most diverse agroecosystems, spreads throughout the different regions of the world, making it one of the most important agricultural crops. In this crop, pest insects stand out for causing losses both in the field and in warehouses. The application of essential oils can be an important technique to be investigated in the management of insects due to its known insecticidal activity and low risk to the environment. The objective of the work was to value the insecticide and repellent effect of essential oils of exotic lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) and native lemongrass (Elionurus sp.) for the management of maize weevil (Sitophilus zeamais (Mots., 1855, Coleoptera: Curculionidae)). The chemical analysis of the oils made by CG-MS showed that the chemical composition of the native and exotic lemongrass is similar, however, the exotic species presented a greater number of compounds. The essential oils of native and exotic lemon grass have efficiency on maize weevil mortality, and it is verified that the increase in the applied dose reflects in a reduction in the insect's exposure time for death to occur. The essential oil of both species showed repellent capacity at all times evaluated. Thus, it can be said that both species have the capacity and potential to be used in the management of corn weevil, and can be an alternative for smallhorders farmers and organic production.

Abstract:PURPOSE To explore differences in the patterns of dose spillage to normal brain in stereotactic radiosurgery when using the Gamma Knife Perfexion (GKP) versus single-isocenter volumetric modulated arc radiosurgery (VMAS) to treat multiple metastases. METHODS Radiosurgery plans were generated on five T1-weighted MRI data sets for delivery with a Gamma Knife Perfexion (Elekta GammaPlan V10.1) and a Varian accelerator using VMAS (Philips Pinnacle V9.2). Each data set contained between three and five brain metastases. The percent of the target volume receiving the prescription dose (V100%) was >99% for each target. No heterogeneity corrections were used with either planning system. Following planning, the images, contours, and dose distributions were exported to an analysis program (VelocityAI). On each data set, the normal brain volumes receiving 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 90% of the prescription dose were determined and tabulated. Normal brain was defined as brain minus any target volumes. A percent change from GKP to VMAS was calculated for each dose level. Isodose lines and DVHs were generated for each modality and overlaid. RESULTS Dose spillage to normal brain was consistently higher for single-isocenter VMAS compared to GKP, even when the volume of brain receiving the prescription dose remained similar or decreased. This increase in dose spillage could be seen for all dose levels (V90%-V20%), and was more significant for lower dose levels. Levels V20-40% showed an average increase of+653% compared to GKP. Levels V70-90% showed an average increase of +355%. The average increase across all levels was +546%. CONCLUSION Dose spillage to normal brain is significantly increased when treating multiple metastases with single-isocenter VMAS compared to multi-shot treatment with GKP. The clinical implications of this increased spillage should be examined further, particularly in situations where patients may receive multiple SRS treatments or radiosurgery combined with whole-brain radiotherapy.
Copaiba oil and Neem extract can be a potential alternative for the behavioral control of Sitophilus zeamais

Abstract:Abstract Insects' ethology is an important factor when it is desired to carry out pest management. This knowledge makes it possible to manipulate behavioral activities, repel, or attract insects according to needs and interests. The maize weevil Sitophilus zeamais (Mots., 1855) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), one of the main stored grain pests, has been the target of studies of behavioral changes studies through natural substances due to its resistance to different insecticidal classes. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of sublethal concentrations of neem extract and copaiba oil on the locomotor behavior of S. zeamais. The behavioral characteristic considered were walking activity, the frequency of contact of insects with the treated grain mass, and the time spent for this behavior. The walking activity of the S. zeamais increased with exposure to Neem extract and Copaiba oil. In general, the Neem extract and Copaiba oil-induced more contact with grain mass than the control, suggesting an attractive effect on the insect, however more significant for the Neem oil. The insect's behavior was altered, presenting a specific path due to Copaiba oil and Neem extract stimuli. These results indicate that Copaiba oil and Neem extract can be a potential alternative for controlling S. zeamais on stored products since changes in this pests' behavior can reduce qualitative and quantitative grain damage. Thus, the development of products based on Copaiba oil and Neem extract may be helpful for storage pest management.

Abstract:Abstract Fall armyworm (Spodoptera frugiperda) is the main species that causes damage to the maize crop in Brazil. In the perspective of studying alternatives of control of this pest that preserve the natural enemies, the aim of this research was to evaluate the insecticidal efficiency of the essential oils of Vanillosmopsis arborea and Lippia microphylla on S. frugiperda and verify the selectivity to the predator Euborellia annulipes. The bioassays were carried out in the Agricultural Entomology Laboratory of the Federal University of Paraiba, using insects, from 3rd instar of S. frugiperda and E. annulipes, originating from mass rearing in the laboratory itself. Dilutions of the oils were performed in Tween® 80 at concentrations of 0, 100, 150 and 200 mg mL-1. 1.0 μL from each dilution was applied to the prothoracic region of the insects. The S. frugiperda mortality was verified by topical contact of V. arborea oil with LC10 = 74.3 mg mL-1 and LC50 = 172.86 mg mL-1, for L. microphyla, LC10 = 51.26 mg mL-1 and LC50 = 104.52 mg mL-1. The observed lethal concentrations for E. annulipes were V. arborea LC10 = 71.3 mg mL-1 and LC50 = 160.2 mg mL-1. While L. microphyla, were LC10 = 50.3 mg mL-1 and LC50 = 134.67 mg mL-1. The essential oils of V. arborea and L. microphylla are efficient in the control of S. frugiperda, but are not selective to the predator E. Annulipes.

Subclavian Central Venous Catheters and Ultrasound Guidance: Policy vs Practice

Abstract:Purpose Policy statements recommend the use of ultrasound guidance (USG) to improve patient safety during placement of central venous catheters (CVCs). Studies have conclusively demonstrated greater success rates and fewer complications with the use of USG in catheter placement using the internal jugular vein approach. Data supporting the use of USG for the subclavian vein (SCV) approach, however, have been less conclusive, and USG for SCV cannulation is rarely used in clinical practice. We compared USG placement versus anatomic placement during subclavian insertion of a CVC. Methods A prospective randomized study was performed in March 2010 using a simulation model. Results Ultrasound guidance did not provide a statistically significant benefit for successful cannulation of the SCV (93.3% with USG and 100% without; P=0.15 or 2) or for rate of inadvertent arterial puncture (3.3% with USG and 0% without; P=0.31). Conclusions The use of USG to access the SCV utilizing a task trainer did not improve time to cannulation or success rates. Further study is required to delineate why USG for SCV cannulation has not been widely adopted in clinical practice.
Fumigation and repellency of essential oils against Callosobruchus maculatus (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae) in cowpea

Abstract:Abstract: The objective of this work was to assess the fumigant and repellent effects of essential oils on adults of Callosobruchus maculatus and to identify the chemical composition of two of the tested essential oils. For the fumigation test, the oils of Schinus terebinthifolius, Piper aduncum, Syzygium aromaticum, Piper hispidinervum, Cymbopogon citratus, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, and the eugenol compound were tested at different concentrations on C. maculatus adults. For the repellency test, the oils of S. terebinthifolius, P. aduncum, P. hispidinervum, S. aromaticum, Jatropha curcas, and Ricinus communis were evaluated. In the fumigation test, it was observed that P. aduncum and eugenol showed the highest and lowest LC50s, of 169.50 and 0.28 μL L-1 air, respectively. In the repellency test, the oils of S. aromaticum and P. hispidinervum were repellent to C. maculatus. Gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of these two oils identified 42 compounds, of which safrole was the main component of P. hispidinervum and eugenol of S. aromaticum. The essential oils of S. aromaticum, C. zeylanicum, and the eugenol compound are the most promising to control C. maculatus, via fumigation.

Adjuvants in micro- to nanoscale: current state and future direction.

Abstract:Adjuvants have been used in vaccines for over 70 years to promote long-lived and sterilizing immunity. Since then, various adjuvant systems were developed by combining nanotechnology with natural and/or synthetic immunomodulatory molecules. These systems are biocompatible, immunogenic, and possess higher antigen carrying capacity. This article showcases advancements made in the adjuvant systems formulations, their synthesis routes, and the improvement of these adjuvants have brought in response to combat against ongoing global health threats such as malaria, hepatitis C, universal influenza, and human immunodeficiency virus. This review also highlights the interaction of adjuvants with the delivery of antigens to cells and unfolds mechanism of actions. In addition, this review discusses the physicochemical factors responsible for the efficient interaction of nanoadjuvants with antigen receptors to develop more effective, less reactogenic, and multifunctional systems for the next generation vaccines.
Chemical composition, insecticidal and biochemical effects of Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil on the Helicoverpa armigera

Abstract:Pesticide resistance has developed as a result of long-term and extensive use of chemical pesticides. Essential oils from aromatic plants may provide a new and safe alternative to conventional insecticides. In this study, the insecticidal activities of the essential oil of Melaleuca alternifolia and their chemical constituents against Helicoverpa armigera Hubner were investigated, and the underlying mechanisms were studied. The essential oil showed distinct antifeedant (AFC(50)=8.93mg/ml) and good contact (LD50=50.28 mu g/larva) activities against H.armigera at 24hr. Ten chemical components were identified using a gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer, and mainly included terpinen-4-ol (40.09%), alpha-terpinene (21.85%), alpha-terpinene (11.34%), -terpineol (6.91%), alpha-pinene (5.86%), terpinolene (3.24%) and 1,8-cineole (1.83%). Among them, five components were determined and results showed that these constituents possessed obvious antifeedant activities. The activities of acetylcholinesterase and glutathione S-transferase were notably inhibited by the essential oil, as compared with the control, with strong dose- and time-dependent effects. The results provide a basis for their development and utilization in the control of insects in the future.

Abstract:Storage pests influence food production and conservation worldwide. The common control measures for these pests involve the use of synthetic pesticides, but these pesticides are harmful to the environment and human health. Thus, biological insecticides can substitute or reduce dependence on synthetic insecticides. This work aimed to study the insecticidal activities of essential oils (EOs) from leaves, fruits and stems of Melicope pteleifolia and their main compound against three kinds of pests, Tribolium castaneum, Lasioderma serricorne and Liposcelis bostrychophila. The Gas Chromatography - Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS) detection showed that β- cis -ocimene was the major compound in EOs from leaves and fruits of M. pteleifolia (26.96, and 65.99%, respectively). The main compound of stems EO is origanene (77.00%). In the fumigation test, EO of fruits and β- cis -ocimene were toxic to L. serricorne , and β- cis -ocimene was toxic to T. castaneum . The EOs and β- cis -ocimene had significant contact toxicity and repellent effect on these three species of pests. The results indicated that M. pteleifolia EOs are potential biological insecticides for controlling storage pests.

Abstract:Epicauta atomaria is a phytophagous insect pest of agricultural crops controlled through the application of synthetic insecticides that cause serious human health and environmental damage. Bioinsecticides formulated from essential plant oils are suitable as an alternative to synthetic insecticides in the control of pest insects. For this reason, the objective of this work is to determine the fumigant insecticidal activity of a screening of plant essential oils against E. atomaria and determine the chemical composition of the essential oils with greater toxicity. The fumigant insecticidal activity was evaluated at different concentrations; the chemical composition of the essential oils with greater toxicity was determined by gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Mentha spicata and Salvia rosmarinus essential oils showed strong fumigant activity against E. atomaria with LC50 values of 21.7 and 23.3 μL/L air, respectively, followed by Laurus nobilis and Pascalia glauca essential oils showing strong fumigant activity with LC50 value of 32.8 μL/L air in both cases. The major components identified in the M. spicata essential oil were pulegone (55.08%) and isopulegone (12.57%) and those in the S. rosmarinus essential oil were camphor (19.42%), 1.8-cineole (18.72%), α-pinene (15.87%) and camphene (11.88%). In conclusion, M. spicata, S. rosmarinus, L. nobilis and P. glauca essential oils could be considered as components in bioinsecticide formulations for future integrated pest management (IPM) programmes.
