Abstract:Background Neurosurgery is a surgical discipline that demands comprehensive knowledge in other specialties. It is regarded as one of the most competitive specialties. However, there is a new trend toward considering life-style friendly specialties. Therefore, this study aims to assess the neurosurgery perception and identify potential factors influencing such attitudes. Methods An observational, survey-based study was conducted on medical students at the College of Medicine, Imam Abdulrahman bin Faisal University, Dammam, Saudi Arabia. An online-based questionnaire was administered to the participants. It consisted of two main parts: the first part collected demographic data, while the second part included 20 Likert scale-based questions. Pearson's Chi-square test was utilized, with statistical significance set at p<0.05. Results A total of 305 medical students from various academic years participated in the questionnaire survey, with nearly an equal gender distribution. Remarkably, a significant majority (76.72%) expressed uncertainty or disagreement regarding the adequacy of neurosurgery education during their medical studies. While a substantial portion of participants (69.5%) found neurosurgery intriguing, almost half (47.87%) indicated that they would not pursue it as their future specialty. The consideration of neurosurgery as a career path showed statistically significant differences in relation to both gender and academic year (p=0.009 and p<0.001, respectively). Conclusion This study emphasizes how gender and academic year affect choosing neurosurgery as a career but notes limitations like self-reporting bias and a single-institution scope, which may affect generalizability. Future research might consider national summer training programs to engage more students in neurosurgery.

Abstract:Background: Gender equity in healthcare ensures equal access to services and resources for all individuals, regardless of gender. Studies show that patients' gender influences their healthcare experiences and decisions, and societal gender preferences impact surgeon selection. Therefore, the objective of this study was to address the surgeons' gender preferences among Saudi Arabia's population. Methods: This study used a cross-sectional research design and survey methodology to gather data from a representative sample of adults aged 18 and older from the general population in Saudi Arabia. This study used SPSS version 26 for statistical data entry and analysis, employing descriptive and inferential statistics, frequency distributions, descriptive statistics, and multivariate analysis using multiple logistic regression for variables significantly associated with population gender in univariate analysis. Results: This study involved 2085 participants, with 51.2% aged 18–25, 18.4% aged 26–35, 16.7% aged 36–45, and 13.8% aged 45 and above. The majority were Saudi Arabian, with a majority holding a university degree. The majority worked in the healthcare sector, while the remaining 29.7% were unemployed. This study found that there were significant gender preferences among survey respondents for different types of surgical procedures. Male participants preferred male surgeons for routine non-emergency visits and sensitive obstetric, genital, sexual, and minor procedures (p < 0.001). Female participants, on the other hand, had no preference for emergency surgeries and major surgical procedures (p < 0.001). This study found that participants were more likely to prefer female surgeons for regular non-emergency visits to the surgery clinic (p < 0.001; aOR = 2.344). Additionally, participants had a high preference for female surgeons for sensitive cases (p < 0.001; aOR = 7.064) and minor surgical procedures (p < 0.001; aOR = 2.489). Conclusion: This study underscores the significance of cognizance and the incorporation of a patient's gender preferences when selecting surgical procedures, thus fostering an environment that is more accommodating and focused on the patient.

Abstract:Background Choosing a medical specialty poses a significant challenge for students, with initial fascinations often evolving during their academic journey. Despite its inherent appeal, neurosurgery faces hesitancy among undergraduate students, potentially due to perceived difficulties and time demands. This study aims to investigate the factors influencing medical students' intentions toward neurosurgery at two institutions in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia. Methodology A cross-sectional study design was employed, utilizing a validated, anonymous questionnaire distributed electronically to medical students and interns in the eastern province of Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire comprised two sections, namely, demographic and academic profiles, and participants' intentions, knowledge, and attitudes toward neurosurgery. Data analysis involved descriptive statistics, and chi-square tests to explore relationships and identify significant predictors. Results Of the participants, 197 (34.1%) expressed interest in neurosurgery, but only 94 (16.3%) had a comprehensive understanding of the field. Motivations included high income, specialty prestige, and positive impact on patients, while stress and work-life balance were common deterring factors. Age and academic years were associated with a gradual decrease in interest, except for initial medical school students. Participants were attracted to innovative technological aspects, while high competition and neurophobia were deterring factors. Conclusions This study provides a comprehensive analysis of determinants influencing medical students' and interns' interest in neurosurgery. Early exposure, clinical training, and personal motivations play significant roles in shaping career preferences. Challenges, such as perceived difficulties and concerns related to work-life balance, need targeted interventions to enhance neurosurgery's attractiveness. Considerations extend beyond technical and academic facets to encompass personal and lifestyle dimensions.
From classroom to operating room: What attracts medical students to neurosurgery

Abstract:Background: The specialties chosen by medical students after graduation are critical to their professional trajectories. This study investigates the perceptions of medical students at Jazan University in southwestern Saudi Arabia toward neurosurgery, focusing on the factors that influence their inclination to pursue this specialty. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted among 342 medical students from the Faculty of Medicine at Jazan University during the 2022-2023 academic year. The participants included students ranging from second- to sixth-year levels. Results: Among the 342 students, 207 (60.5 %) were males, and 135 (39.5 %) were females, with 169 (49.4 %) expressing interest in neurosurgery. Over time, there was a trend of decreasing interest in neurosurgery. The primary reasons for choosing this specialty were market demand for neurosurgeons and potential for substantial income, while stress was the main deterrent. Multivariate analysis revealed that third-, fourth-, and fifth-year students were significantly less likely to pursue neurosurgery, with reductions of 89 % [OR=0.11, 95 % CI: (0.04-0.29), p < 0.001], 83 % [OR=0.17, 95 % CI: (0.07-0.43), p < 0.001], and 74 % [OR=0.26, 95 % CI: (0.11-0.61), p = 0.002], respectively. The strongest motivating factors for choosing neurosurgery were research opportunities [OR=2.37, p < 0.001] and the prestige associated with the specialty [OR=2.35, p < 0.001]. Conclusions: The study provides valuable insights into medical students' perceptions and career aspirations related to neurosurgery in southern Saudi Arabia. It highlights key factors such as research opportunities, prestige, and competitiveness that motivate students to consider neurosurgery as a specialty. The study also addresses common misconceptions and stereotypes about neurosurgery, promoting a more accurate understanding of the field among students. These findings have significant implications for medical education, career guidance, and healthcare policy, helping to shape initiatives that enhance patient care and support the development of neurosurgery.

Abstract:We sought to evaluate the impact of crossing strategy on the incidence of periprocedural myocardial infarction (PMI) during chronic total occlusion (CTO) percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Background: The optimal technique for crossing coronary CTOs remains controversial. Methods: We retrospectively examined the incidence of PMI among 184 consecutive patients who underwent CTO PCI at our institution between 2012 and 2015. Creatine kinase‐myocardial band fraction (CK‐MB) and troponin were measured before and after PCI in all patients. PMI was defined as CK‐MB increase ≥3× upper limit of normal (ULN). Results: Mean age was 65 ± 8 years, 98% of patients were men, 57% had diabetes mellitus, 36% were current smokers, 38% had prior heart failure, 31% had prior coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG), and 55% had prior PCI. The retrograde approach was used in 38% of cases. As compared with antegrade wire escalation and antegrade dissection/re‐entry, use of the retrograde approach was associated with higher J‐CTO (Multicenter CTO Registry of Japan) scores (P < 0.0001), higher frequency of moderate or severe calcification (P = 0.0061), longer CTO length (P < 0.0001), more frequent proximal cap ambiguity (P < 0.0001), and lower technical (P = 0.0007) and procedural (P = 0.0014) success. The frequency of PMI for the antegrade‐only and retrograde cases was 10% and 33%, respectively (P = 0.0001). On multivariate analysis, use of the retrograde approach and moderate/severe calcification were independently associated with higher incidence of PMI. Conclusions: As compared with antegrade‐only crossing techniques, the retrograde approach is used in patients with more complex anatomy but may carry higher risk for PMI. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:Dental care accessibility is subject to a dentist's qualification, practice and intention to treat patients, regardless of whether those patients have special healthcare needs (SCN) and should receive treatment in a dental setting. This multicentre study aimed to evaluate the characteristics of patients with SCN, their access to dental care and behaviour towards dental care from their caregiver's perspective. In addition, the perspective of dental care providers who care for patients with SCN and the factors affecting the provision of treatment was also appraised. The Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia served as the site of this cross-sectional study from 1 February 2020 to 31 January 2022. Caregivers of 272 patients with SCN, regardless of age and gender, were recruited in the study. The caregiver's proforma sought information on the demographic characteristics, type of disability, cooperation, medical history, occupation of the parent and patient's behaviour towards oral hygiene and dental healthcare. The second proforma had the dental care provider's perspective about the common disabilities, factors that affect the decision to provide treatment, difficulties patients face in getting their dental treatment and, from the dentist's experience, recommendations to improve the access to dental care for patients with SCN. Statistical analysis was carried out by using SPSS version 22.0. The demographic features, caregiver's perception about oral healthcare accessibility and dental professional's point of view were presented as frequencies and percentages. Chi-square test was applied to compare the proportions. The majority of the caregivers were satisfied with the dental service providers (91.9%) for their patients with SCN. The dental care provider's survey results indicated a shortage of dentists (54.7%) in the region and other factors that pose challenges to special care, like the severity of the disability of patients with SCN (50%), family structure (46.7%), treatment cost (35.6%) and transportation (32.8%). Patients with SCN in Saudi Arabia had a high appraisal of access to dental care and were very satisfied with dental treatment results. However, the presence of a dental care provider in the same rehabilitation centre was a major concern. The severity of the disability and the patient's cooperation were the major factors that may have affected the decision of the dental care provider.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: A low neurosurgeon-to-patient ratio persists in many developing nations including Pakistan. We aimed to investigate the perceptions of medical students regarding neurosurgery as a first step toward recognizing this problem and potentially suggesting ways to solve it.METHODS: A questionnaire was designed comprising 3 sections: 1) demographics, 2) possible challenges and perceptions regarding neurosurgery as a profession, and 3) general perceptions about neurosurgery. Statistical analysis was conducted, and a P value < 0.05 was considered significant.RESULTS: Of 387 responses received, 44.4% of male respondents and 50.6% of female respondents revealed intent to consider opting for neurosurgery as a profession. Regression analysis revealed inadequate dexterity (P = 0.001) and inability to carry out private practice (P = 0.002) were responsible for increased likelihood of opting out of neurosurgery by medical students.CONCLUSIONS: This study identified the perceptions that may influence the decision to pursue neurosurgical training among physicians early in their careers. Interventions including availability of day care facilities for children and introduction of curricula to promote neurosurgical knowledge in clinical training are expected to encourage the decision to pursue neurosurgery among medical students in Pakistan.

Abstract:BackgroundThe Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has seen an increase in chronic diseases. International evidence suggests that early intervention is the best approach to reduce the burden of chronic disease. However, the limited research available suggests that health care access remains unequal, with rural populations having the poorest access to and utilisation of primary health care centres and, consequently, the poorest health outcomes. This study aimed to examine the factors influencing the access to and utilisation of primary health care centres in urban and rural areas of Riyadh province of the KSA.MethodsA questionnaire survey was carried out to identify the barriers and enablers to accessing PHCS in rural (n = 5) and urban (n = 5) areas of Riyadh province, selected on the classification of the population density of the governorates. An adapted version of the NHS National Survey Programme was administered that included 50 questions over 11 sections that assessed a wide range of factors related to respondent’s access and experience of the PHCS. A total of 935 responses were obtained with 52.9% (n = 495) from urban areas and the remaining 47.1% (n = 440) from rural areas of Riyadh province.ResultsThis study highlights that there are high levels of satisfaction among patients among all PHCS. In relation to differences between urban and rural respondents, the findings indicated that there were significant variations in relation to: education level, monthly income, medical investigations, receiving blood tests on time, extra opening hours, distance, cleanliness and health prevention. Core barriers for rural patients related to the distance to reach PHCS, cleanliness of the PHCS, receiving health prevention and promotion services, which should serve to improve health outcomes.ConclusionsThis study highlighted important differences in access to and utilisation of PHCS between urban and rural populations in Riyadh province in the KSA. These findings have implications for policy and planning of PHCCs and reducing inequalities in health care between rural and urban populations and contributing to a reduction in the chronic disease burden in Riyadh province.

Abstract:Background: Preoperative anxiety is a prevalent concern among surgical patients, significantly impacting their well-being and recovery. Common sources of anxiety include fears related to pain, anesthesia, and surgical outcomes. Despite the importance of addressing this issue, there is limited research on preoperative anxiety in Jazan, Saudi Arabia. This study explores the prevalence, determinants, and coping strategies for preoperative anxiety among surgical patients in this region. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using an online survey distributed to patients scheduled for surgery at healthcare facilities in Jazan. The survey collected data on demographics, surgical history, anxiety symptoms, sources of anxiety, and coping strategies. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Results: The study included 312 participants, primarily young adults aged 18-24 years. The majority reported experiencing anxiety symptoms such as nausea (47.8%), sweating (47.8%), and irritability (41.3%). Pain (54.2%), surgical outcomes (49.0%), and anesthesia (32.4%) were the most common sources of anxiety. Support from family and friends (66.7%) and relaxation techniques (26.6%) were identified as the most effective coping strategies. A significant proportion (71.8%) expressed a need for additional support. Conclusion: Preoperative anxiety is common among surgical patients in Jazan, driven mainly by concerns about pain, anesthesia, and surgical outcomes. Effective coping strategies include support from family and friends and relaxation techniques. There is a need for additional support resources to improve patient care and reduce anxiety.
Barrier to access and dental care utilization behavior with related independent variables in the elderly population of Saudi Arabia

Abstract:Objectives: The study aimed to evaluate barriers associated with access and utilization of dental services among the elderly population of Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: A systematic random sample of 350 elderly people recruited from various gathering places of the elderly including all nursing home residents ( n = 73) was included in this study. The data were collected through face-to-face structured interviews related to access and utilization of dental services, and sociodemographic, behavioral, medical, and financial barriers to dental services. Statistical analysis included frequency distributions, chi-squared tests, and regression analysis using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program. Results: Approximately 37% of the elderly had proper access to and utilization of dental services. Independent variables that affect access and utilization of dental services were low income (odds ratio [OR] = 2.23, confidence interval [CI] = 1.34–3.72), unmarried participants (OR = 3.25, CI = 1.75–6.05), community residents (OR = 5.15, CI = 2.52–10.53), smokers (OR = 1.93, CI = 1.02–3.68), irregular users of toothbrushing (OR = 3.53, CI = 2.09–5.95), no dental insurance (OR = 1.88, CI = 1.06–3.37), and unaffordable price (OR = 2.55, CI = 1.38–4.69) in the bivariate analysis. In logistic regression analysis, the significant variables that were associated with proper access and utilization of dental services were having dental insurance (OR = 2.24, CI = 1.15–3.82), affordable prices (OR = 2.19, CI = 1.21–3.70), brushing regularly (OR = 3.58, CI = 2.01–6.37), higher education (OR = 1.87, CI = 1.10–3.20), and being married (OR = 1.68. CI = 0.97–2.91). Conclusion: Lack of perceived need, no dental insurance, unaffordable price, transportation, and fear from dental treatment were the most common significant barriers to dental services.
Exploring the Challenges in Palliative Care As Perceived by the Saudi Physicians: A Cross-Sectional Study

Abstract:Background: Palliative care is essential for managing patients with life-limiting illnesses. In Saudi Arabia, providing effective palliative care is uniquely challenging due to cultural, religious, and social factors. Despite healthcare advancements, there is a gap in understanding the challenges faced by physicians in palliative care within this context. Aims: This study aimed to explore the challenges encountered in palliative care as perceived by physicians in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted using an electronic questionnaire distributed among physicians involved in palliative care at the specified healthcare institutions. The questionnaire assessed their perceptions of the challenges in palliative care and the influence of their socio-demographic backgrounds on these perceptions. Data were analyzed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Results: The age distribution of the enrolled physicians showed that a majority were between 20-40 years old (48.48%, n = 96). Male physicians accounted for 64.65% (n = 128), and females for 35.35% (n = 70). Various specialties were represented, with critical care (15.66%, n = 31) and radiation oncology (16.67%, n = 33) being the most common. Major challenges identified included limited outpatient and inpatient services (54.55%, n = 108), restricted access to allied healthcare professionals (60.61%, n = 120), ethical dilemmas due to triaging (63.13%, n = 125), lack of telemedicine facilities (57.07%, n = 113), and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pain and palliative care research (60.1%, n = 119). Strategies adopted to mitigate these challenges included creating triage systems (54.55%, n = 108), using telemedicine (60.61%, n = 120), advanced care planning (63.13%, n = 125), and providing necessary personal protective equipment (PPE) (60.1%, n = 119). Conclusion: This study highlights significant barriers in palliative care, such as limited services, ethical dilemmas, and lack of telemedicine facilities. Addressing these challenges requires ethical support for healthcare providers, integration of telemedicine, continuous education, and improved access to multidisciplinary care teams, which are crucial for enhancing palliative care quality and ensuring comprehensive patient support.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Preoperative services and education allow patients to take an active role in their recovery and reduce the risk of post-operative complications. Exploring patients’ perceptions and attitudes regarding pre-anesthesia services and education helps reveal gaps in patients’ uptake of them so that targeted educational interventions can be designed and implemented. OBJECTIVE This is an exploratory study aimed at increasing the understanding of patients’ perceptions and concerns about and the adequacy of the pre-anesthesia services and educational content provided to them at the pre-anesthesia clinic (PAC) of the National Guard Hospital (NGH) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The information gathered will be used to design and develop an electronic patient education system that will allow patients to access personalized, evidence-based pre-anesthesia information relevant to their upcoming surgeries. METHODS Quantitative research methods are used to collect relevant information from patients using a closed-ended questionnaire. The questionnaire includes items on demographics, patients’ perceptions and concerns regarding anesthesia, and the assessment of pre-anesthesia information adequacy. RESULTS Our results showed that 94% of the participants consider the PAC very important, and more than half of the participants (56%) were interested in receiving additional educational information about anesthesia via mobile applications. While 100% of the participants were satisfied with the information and services provided at the clinic, the assessment of this information and service adequacy indicated that participants were not adequately informed about anesthesia. Among the most common anesthesia-related concerns were the inability to wake up after anesthesia, becoming paralyzed after spinal anesthesia, the possibility of staying in the ICU after the surgery and developing back pain. CONCLUSIONS This gathered information will be used to design and develop an educational intervention that will deliver evidence-based, personalized and easy to understand educational instructions to patients to better prepare them for their upcoming surgery. The proposed system will overcome the problems of (i) the spread of generalized unrelated educational information and instructions, (ii) patients forgetting or misunderstanding the given instructions, (iii) issues with the accessibility of information, and (iv) a lack of communication and interaction between patients and their anesthetist.

Abstract:Authors describe structure-activity relationships in quinolone group and report a study of the antibacterial activity of two new compounds: pefloxacin and its demethyl derivative, AM-715. These two products take place in the field of researches carried out for extending indications of this group of antimicrobial agents by obtaining derivatives more active, with broader spectrum, less biotransformed and susceptible to be used in general infections and not only in urinary tract infections.

Abstract:Background: Telehealth involves delivering healthcare remotely through digital platforms such as telephone and video calls. Use of telehealth surged during the COVID-19 pandemic because of the need for contactless healthcare. The Saudi Ministry of Health established the "937 telephone medical consultation call center" almost 10 years ago. Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine public awareness of, utilization of, and satisfaction with the 937 call center service, and to assess associated factors. Materials and methods: This national community-based, cross-sectional study was conducted through multistage sampling with proportional allocation from 20 health directorates. Participants were selected from the general population in public places and were interviewed with a validated questionnaire. Results: Of 7951 approached individuals, 7692 agreed to participate (response rate 96.7%). Seventy-eight percent of participants were aware of the 937 service, and 56.4% had previously used the service. Most (86%) users were satisfied with the service. Long waiting times were the most frequent reason (46.6%) for dissatisfaction. In multivariable analysis, service awareness and utilization were both significantly associated with having higher education (aOR 4.03, 95%CI: 3.17-5.12 and aOR 3.42, 95%CI: 2.64-4.42, respectively). Positive impressions of telephone medical consultation services, Saudi nationality, having children, having medical insurance, and having a history of chronic disease were significantly associated with awareness of, utilization of, and satisfaction with the service. Conclusion: The study revealed high awareness of, utilization of, and satisfaction with the 937 telephone medical consultation call center, thus suggesting increased public acceptance of the service. Moreover, the study identified socio-demographic factors influencing public awareness of, utilization of, and satisfaction with telehealth. Further studies are required to increase understanding of the facilitators of, and barriers to, the use of service among various population groups.

Abstract:Background: Telemedicine is a paradigm shift that utilizes technology for remote healthcare delivery, improving the quality of care. Objectives: This study aims to assess the general population's awareness and perception regarding telemedicine in the central, northern, and western regions of Saudi Arabia. Methods: A web-based cross-sectional study was conducted in the central, northern, and western regions of Saudi Arabia from January 2024 to May 2024. A structured questionnaire was used to collect data, including sociodemographic information and questions to assess participants' awareness and perception of telemedicine. Data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 27 (Released 2020; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States), with significance at p < 0.05. Results: Out of 414 adult participants in the study, 264 (63.8%) were female, and 205 (49.5%) were below the age of 25. Approximately a quarter of the participants reported being very or moderately familiar with telemedicine. Furthermore, most participants (80.5%, 243) expressed their willingness to try telemedicine. The most common barriers to telemedicine practice were concerns about diagnostic reliability, resistance from physicians, and patient resistance. The study found no significant associations between participants' sociodemographic variables, their familiarity with telemedicine, and their readiness to adopt it. Conclusion: While there is a low level of awareness and knowledge regarding telemedicine among general populations in Saudi Arabia, there is generally a positive perception and willingness to adopt telemedicine for improved healthcare delivery. Addressing barriers to adopting such technology is crucial to ensure the country's successful implementation and widespread acceptance of telemedicine.

Abstract:Introduction Brain tumors pose a major challenge in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) due to limited resources and high costs, resulting in an hampered service delivery of neurosurgical care and significant disparities in patient outcomes compared to high-income nations. Therefore, our systematic review aims to identify barriers to service delivery in providing adequate surgical care for the management of brain tumors in LMICs. Methods We searched Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, and CINAHL, from inception to October 20, 2022. The data from the eligible studies was extracted and analyzed qualitatively. Results The final analysis included 35 articles, which highlighted significant challenges in providing adequate surgical care for brain tumors in LMICs. Among the cited studies, 10% reported lack of multidisciplinary team structures, 61% noted delayed patient presentation, 16% highlighted delays in neuroimaging, 10% reported delays in scheduling surgery, lack of training for specialized surgery (3%), lack of intra-operative facilities (19%), power supply interruption (6%), and lack of advanced diagnostic and specialized surgery facilities (19%). Strategies for addressing these challenges include cross-border collaboration (7%), public education, and awareness (13%), establishing multidisciplinary teams (20%), utilizing alternative surgical techniques (13% awake craniotomy, 7% intraoperative ultrasound, 13% intraoperative cytology smear), and establishing satellite hospitals for low-risk care (7%), standard operating procedure and infection control (13%). Conclusion Targeted interventions considering economic constraints are essential to improve the availability, affordability, and quality of neuro-oncological services in developing countries. International collaborations and building capacity are vital for improving patient outcomes and service delivery, as well as forming multidisciplinary teams and utilizing resource-saving, innovative methods.

Abstract:Objectives: The demand for orthopedic surgery is expected to increase as the Saudi population grows and ages. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the interest of medical students and interns in orthopedic surgery and the factors that influence their interest. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted using a structured questionnaire adapted from a similar study and modified by the authors. The questionnaire was distributed via email to more than 500 medical students from the second year to the internship year. The questionnaire was designed to assess knowledge, interest, and students' perception of orthopedics. Results: Five hundred and ten responses were obtained; 382 (74.90%) were from women. Gender, family orientation, private practice, and perceptions of orthopedic surgery as a stressful specialty or a specialty in crisis were variables that did not influence participants' perceptions of orthopedic surgery. Further, 13% of participants showed early interest in orthopedic surgery, especially during their third year of medical school. Most of the interested participants recognized that having strong level of knowledge, future academic opportunities, a controllable lifestyle, direct patient care, experience during their clerkship, a high salary, immediate satisfaction, and a prestigious specialty were important aspects that determined their interest in considering a future career in orthopedic surgery. Work preferences that had a significant impact on interest included working with patients not requiring long-term care, working only in the hospital, working outside the hospital, and working only during the day. Conclusion: There was no difference between genders in terms of interest in orthopedic surgery. This study might serve as a basis for future research assessing the interest of medical students in orthopedic surgery as well as identifying and managing the barriers that prevent students from pursuing careers as orthopedic surgeons.
Perceptions and Behaviors Regarding Early Screening and Breast-Related Complaints Among Saudi Women

Abstract:Background Breast cancer (BC) is a global public health issue, contributing to a significant death toll among women. Breast cancer is the most common type among Saudi women, accounting for over a quarter of all new cancer cases. The current approaches for detecting BC include mammography, clinical breast exams, and breast self-examination (BSE). Early diagnosis of BC is crucial for reducing mortality and morbidity. This study aims to investigate attitudes and behaviors regarding early screening and self-examination of breast cancer in Saudi Arabia. Materials and method This cross-sectional study was conducted over eight months. The sample size calculation with a 95% confidence interval and 0.05 precision rate is 600 of the total targeted group. The study included Saudi females aged 30 and above. Data were collected via an online questionnaire. The questionnaire evaluated various aspects, including information regarding sociodemographics, barriers, and attitudes toward breast cancer screening. Results The majority of participants were aged 41-50 (40.7%) and married (76.2%). Over a third (31.9%) had been diagnosed with benign breast tumors, with MRI being the most common examination method (39.2%). Regarding screening practices, 55.7% had been screened previously, with a high intention for future screening (76.8%). Attitudes toward screening were positive, with 83.4% willing to undergo testing if free, painless, and conducted by a female provider. Barriers to screening included fear of examination (30.2%) and shame about exposing the body (25.6%). Conclusion The study provides valuable insights into the demographic characteristics, prevalence of benign breast tumors, screening practices, and attitudes toward breast cancer screening among Saudi women aged 30 and above. Factors such as age, marital status, income, occupation, and geographical residency influence screening behavior and intentions. Efforts to promote awareness, reduce barriers, and improve access to screening services are essential for enhancing breast cancer detection and prevention within this population.
