Fabrication of Optical Cavities with Femtosecond Laser Pulses

Abstract:We report on fabrication of three-dimensional (3D) high-quality (Q) whispering-gallery-mode microcavities by femtosecond laser micromachining. The main fabrication procedures include the formation of on-chip freestanding microdisk through selective material removal by femtosecond laser pulses, followed by surface smoothing processes (CO2 laser reflow for amorphous glass and focused ion beam (FIB) sidewall milling for crystalline materials) to improve the Q factors. Fused silica microcavities with 3D geometries are demonstrated with Q factors exceeding 106. A microcavity laser based on Nd:glass has been fabricated, showing a threshold as low as 69μW via free space continuous-wave optical excitation at the room temperature. CaF2 crystalline microcavities with Q factor of ~4.2×104 have also been demonstrated. This technique allows us to fabricate 3D high-Q microcavities in various transparent materials such as glass and crystals, which will benefit a broad spectrum of applications such as nonlinear optics, quantum optics, and bio-sensing.
Femtosecond Laser Direct Writing of High-Q Microresonators in Glass and Crystals

Abstract:We report on fabrication of microresonators of high quality (high-Q) factors in both glass and crystalline materials by femtosecond laser 3D micromachining. Based on this novel approach, we obtained high-Q microresonators of non-in-plane geometries in glass materials such as fused silica and Nd:glass and demonstrated lasing at a pump power as low as 69 microwatts. We also fabricated on-chip microresonators of sub-100 mu m diameters in crystalline materials including calcium fluoride and lithium niobate, and demonstrated efficient second harmonic generation using the high-Q lithium niobate microresonator. Furthermore, femtosecond laser 3D micromachining allows direct integration of the microresonators with other functional microcomponents, such as a microfluidic mixer and a microheater, leading to compact microdevices with enhanced functionalities. Our technique opens new avenues for fabricating high-Q microresonators with either 2D or 3D geometries on various types of dielectric materials.

Abstract:We report on the stimulated Brillouin laser (SBL) and over-dense frequency comb generation in high-Q microbubble resonators (MBRs). Both first-order and cascaded SBL are achieved due to the rich high-order axial modes in the MBRs, although the free spectral range (FSR) of azimuthal mode of the MBR is severely mismatched with the Brillouin shift. The SBL is also generated by varying the internal pressure of MBR at fixed initially non-resonant pump light wavelength. In addition, over-dense frequency combs are realized with comb spacings that are one and two FSRs of aixal mode.

Abstract:An all-optical microwave generation using a multi-wavelength photonic crystal fiber Brillouin laser is presented. A highly nonlinear photonic crystal fiber with the length of 25m is used as Brillouin gain medium. A Fabry-Perot cavity with two fiber Bragg gratings as reflectors are designed in order to enhance the Brillouin conversion efficiency. The fiber Bragg gratings can be used to selectively excite the jth-order Stokes' wave and suppress other order Stokes' waves. The mechanism for microwave/millimeter-wave generation is theoretically analyzed. In the experiment, both 9.788 GHz and 19.579 GHz microwave signals are achieved through mixing the pump wave with the first-order and the second-order Stokes' waves.

Abstract:Optical frequency comb has been shown great values in numerous applications including molecular spectroscopy, RF photonics, millimeter wave generation, frequency metrology, atomic clock, and dense/ultra-dense wavelength division multiplexed high speed optical communications. Optical frequency comb in the microresonator supporting whispering-gallery modes has attracted a broad spectrum of interests because of its advantages such as flexible repetition rate, wide bandwidth, and compact size. The exceptionally long photon lifetime and small modal volume enhance light-matter interaction, which enables us to realize intracavity nonlinear frequency conversions with low pump threshold. With the advantages of small size, low power consumption, wide spectral coverage and adjustable dispersion, the magnesium fluoride microresonator optical frequency comb has potential applications in optical communication and mid-infrared spectroscopy.In this paper, the spectral characteristics of the optical frequency comb generated by a magnesium fluoride whispering-gallery mode microbottle resonator platform are investigated. In order to optimize the spectral distribution of the optical frequency comb of the magnesium fluoride microbottle resonator, the second-order dispersion and higher-order dispersion of the bottle resonator structure under different curvature and axial modes are solved iteratively by the finite element method, and the spectral evolution of the optical frequency comb under different axial mode excitation is simulated by solving the nonlinear Schrödinger equation through the Split-Step Fourier method. The results show that near-zero anomalous dispersion tuning can be achieved in a wide bandwidth range by low-order axial mode excitation at the optimal radius of curvature, while the high-order axial mode will lead to the microbottle resonator presenting weak normal dispersion. The weaker anomalous dispersion in the lower-order axial mode broadens the bandwidth of the optical comb, demonstrating that the third-order dispersion and the negative fourth-order dispersion can broaden the Kerr soliton optical comb; the weak normal dispersion in the higher-order axial mode suppresses the generation of the Kerr optical comb, and the Raman optical comb dominates. The selective excitation of Kerr soliton combs and Raman combs can be achieved by modulating the axial mode of the microbottle resonator under suitable pumping conditions. The work in this paper will provide guidance for the design of dispersion in magnesium fluoride microresonator and the experimental tuning of broadband Kerr soliton optical combs and Raman optical combs.

Dispersion engineering in a Brillouin fiber laser cavity for Kerr frequency comb formation

Abstract:We conduct numerical and experimental investigations on Kerr comb generation in a nonlinear and non-reciprocal fiber cavity by leveraging both stimulated Brillouin backscattering and cascaded four-wave mixing. By engineering the net cavity dispersion to be either normal or anomalous, we enable the formation of diverse patterns and localized structures in the cavity field. The comb's properties depend crucially on the mismatch between the frequency spacing of the bichromatic pump and the free spectral range of the Brillouin laser cavity in both cases. Particularly, in the anomalous regime, adjusting this parameter yields coherent, stable frequency combs in the modulation instability regime. This allows control and expansion of the spectral bandwidth up to 2 THz in normal dispersion and to 6 THz under anomalous net dispersion. This versatile and easily reconfigurable method holds potential for applications in high-speed communications and microwave synthesis.

Considering the fundamental differences between backward SBS and forward SBS processes, it is challenging to observe the coexistence of both processes in the same microresonator, as well as the photon noise suppression for the forward stimulated Brillouin laser (FSBL). Here, we demonstrate the first 20-dB-noise-squeezed FSBL generation excited by the coexisting backward SBL (BSBL) in an ultrahigh-quality-factor Fabry–Pérot (FP) microresonator based on multimode fiber (MMF). Multiple FSBLs and BSBLs are cascaded through multiple intermodal SBS processes in the multimode microresonator, where the cascaded process between backward SBS and forward SBS (pump-BSBL-FSBL) provides a route towards additional noise squeezing, rendering the FSBL phase noise to be -120 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset frequency. Furthermore, we demonstrate Brillouin-Kerr soliton from a high-order BSBL, which also coexists with FSBLs. Our experimental results show the potential of MMF FP microresonator as an ideal testbed for high-dimensional nonlinear cavity dynamics and laser source with ultrahigh coherence, benefitting critical applications such as acoustic and optical signal generation, processing, and sensing.

Abstract:Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) is experimental investigated in several hundred microns in diameter microspheres with a little eccentricity by melting a fiber tip in a fusing splicer. Fourth order cascaded SBS at C-band (~1540 nm) with 27 mW can be achieved with the abundant and high Q modes in the microspheres. This kind of microcavity also supports high Q modes in O-band (~1320 nm) and second order SBS has been observed. In addition, SBS is also investigated by pumping-heating method with a heating laser at O-band and a pumping laser at C-band. We achieved a tunable SBS with high flexibility on the wavelength, thus the pumping laser can be set at a specified wavelength assisted by the heating laser. This method provides us a new approach for generation of SBS without tuning the pumping laser wavelength and will benefit various applications.

Abstract:By generating a Brillouin laser in an optical microresonator, we realize a soliton Kerr microcomb through exciting the Kerr frequency comb using the generated Brillouin laser in the same cavity. The intracavity Brillouin laser pumping scheme enables us to access the soliton states with a blue-detuned input pump. Due to the ultra-narrow linewidth and the low-noise properties of the generated Brillouin laser, the observed soliton microcomb exhibits narrow-linewidth comb lines and stable repetition rate even by using a diode laser with relatively broad linewidth. Also, we demonstrate a low-noise microwave signal with phase noise levels of -24 dBc/Hz at 10 Hz, -111 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz, and -147 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offsets for a 11.14 GHz carrier with only a free-running input pump. The easy operation of the Brillouin-Kerr soliton microcomb with excellent performance makes our scheme promising for practical applications.

Abstract:Brillouin fiber laser with the non-resonance pumping configuration, has compact set-up, good wavelength tunability and high-power single-frequency-emission capability, being regarded as an important technique for highly-coherent light generation. Such Brillouin fiber lasers, using single-mode fiber (SMF) as the Brillouin gain medium, generally have high lasing thresholds and mode-hopping instabilities, resulting from the relatively-low Brillouin gain coefficient of the conventional SMF. Here, we report a compact, non-resonance-pumping Brillouin photonic crystal fiber laser that can generate kHz-level-linewidth single-frequency lasing with tens-of-mW lasing threshold. Mode-hopping instability of this laser is largely suppressed thanks to the short (∼20 m) cavity length, which gives rise to a free-spectral-range (FSR) value of ∼10 MHz properly matching the tens-of-MHz Brillouin gain bandwidth. Experimental results of both self-heterodyne and frequency-noise measurements indicate a laser linewidth of ∼1.4 kHz, corresponding to high linewidth-narrowing ratio of ∼18. No lasing line of high-order Stokes was observed in experiments as the laser pump power was gradually increased to ∼200 mW, giving a nearly-linear lasing slope.

Soliton Microcomb Generation in a III-V Photonic Crystal Cavity

Abstract:Photonic crystals, material structures in which the dielectric function varies periodically in one, two, or three dimensions, can provide exquisite control over the propagation and confinement of light. By tailoring their band structure, exceptional optical effects can be achieved, such as slow light propagation or, through the creation of photonic bandgaps, optical cavities with both a high quality factor and a small mode volume. Photonic crystal cavities have been used to realize compact nano-lasers and achieve strong coupling to quantum emitters, such as semiconductor quantum dots, color centers, or cold atoms. A useful attribute of photonic crystals is the ability to create chirped mirrors. Chirping has underpinned advances in ultra-fast lasers based on bulk mirrors, but has yet to be fully exploited in integrated photonics, where it could provide a means to engineer otherwise unattainable dispersion profiles for a range of nonlinear optical applications, including soliton frequency comb generation. The vast majority of integrated resonators for frequency combs make use of microring geometries, where only waveguide width and height are varied to engineer dispersion. Generation of frequency combs has been demonstrated with one-dimensional photonic crystal cavities made of silicon nitride, but the low index contrast prevents formation of broad soliton combs. We overcome these challenges by using a photonic-crystal Fabry-Pérot resonator made of gallium phosphide, a material with a high refractive index and a Kerr nonlinearity 200 times larger than that of silicon nitride. We employ chirped photonic crystal mirrors to provide anomalous dispersion. With subharmonic pulsed pumping at an average power of 23.6 mW, we are able to access stable dissipative Kerr frequency combs. We demonstrate soliton formation with a 3-dB bandwidth of 3.0 THz, corresponding to a pulse duration of 60 fs.

Abstract:Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in a high-Q resonator is capable for narrow-linewidth laser generation for various applications but is limited by on-resonance pump to SBS matching from single-longitudinal lasing. In this Letter, we present a narrow linewidth laser via SBS that is enhanced in a monolithic high-Q fiber resonator. The unique cross-polarization pump scheme based on fiber birefringence prevents high-order SBS and ensures single-frequency Brillouin lasing with high intracavity conversion efficiency. Fundamental linewidth of 50 Hz is achieved. Moreover, our scheme also allows precise characterization of Brillouin frequency shift and gain bandwidth of some nonlinear materials.

Abstract:Soliton microcombs have shown great potential in a variety of applications ranging from chip scale frequency metrology to optical communications and photonic data center, in which light coupling among cavity transverse modes, termed as intermode interactions, are long-existing and usually give rise to localized impacts on the soliton state. Of particular interest are whispering gallery mode based crystalline resonators, which with dense mode families, potentially feature interactions of all kind. While effects of narrow-band interactions such as spectral power spikes have been well recognized in crystalline resonators, that of broadband interactions remains unexplored. Abstract:Micro-optical frequency combs are miniaturized coherent light sources exhibiting a tremendous influence on precision spectroscopy, optical clocks, and high-speed optical communications. The rare-earth-doped lithium niobate (LN) is a promising platform to integrate the lasers and comb sources on the same chip of single material. However, microcombs generated in rare-earth-doped LN thin film (LNTF) have not yet been fully explored. To explore the protocols of generating optical combs in ytterbium-doped LNTF, the comb-like laser is studied in the 1060 nm band, and the dissipative Kerr soliton is experimentally demonstrated in the telecom band in a Z-cut wafer. The over-coupled fundamental transverse electric mode with anomalous dispersion is excited at an on-chip pump power of 75.7 mW to generate the robust bright soliton. The broadband spectrum of the Kerr soliton ranges from 1480 to 1660 nm with 110 comb lines, whose repetition rate is 197.8 GHz. The mode-locking of the soliton can be achieved as a result of the photorefractive effect of ytterbium-doped LNTF instead of complex feedback schemes. Numerical simulations are highly accordant with the experimental results. This work expands the microcomb-generating platform and increases the potential for integrated on-chip applications including precision ranging and frequency division.

Abstract:Silica micro-bubble resonators (MBRs) with cavity quality factor as high as Q = 5 x 10(7) are fabricated. The total dispersion of MBRs is analyzed. The thin-wall structure opens a new anomalous dispersion window and thus supports the dispersion compensation for hyper-parametric frequency conversion processes. Experimentally, Kerr parametric oscillation is observed in a 136 mu m diameter MBR, frequency comb generation is also realized. Abstract:Solitons in microresonators have spurred intriguing nonlinear optical physics and photonic applications. Here, by combining Kerr and Brillouin nonlinearities in an over-modal microcavity, we demonstrate spatial multiplexing of soliton microcombs under a single external laser pumping operation. This demonstration offers an ideal scheme to realize highly coherent dual-comb sources in a compact, low-cost and energy-efficient manner, with uniquely low beating noise. Moreover, by selecting the dual-comb modes, the repetition rate difference of a dual-comb pair could be flexibly switched, ranging from 8.5 to 212 MHz. Beyond dual-comb, the high-density mode geometry allows the cascaded Brillouin lasers, driving the co-generation of up to 5 space-multiplexing frequency combs in distinct mode families. Abstract:Brillouin lasing has been widely applied to microwave oscillators, optical gyroscopes, optical sensors, and other fields owing to its strong and flexible dynamics. Microspheres with ultrahigh quality factors and small mode volume are very suitable for generating Brillouin lasing, but it is difficult to integrate them on a chip. Here, we utilize subwavelength grating waveguide as a photonic coupler to connect the silica microsphere with a silicon chip and realize on-chip backward Brillouin lasing. It is experimentally indicated that when the on-chip pump power reaches 24.8 mW, the backward Brillouin lasing with an on-chip slope efficiency of 5% will be excited. Our method makes it easier to realize on-chip Brillouin acousto-optic interaction and greatly expands the application range of microspheres.

Abstract:Microresonator frequency combs (microcombs) are enabling new applications in frequency synthesis and metrology from high-speed laser ranging to coherent optical communications. One critical parameter that dictates the performance of the microcomb is the optical quality factor (Q) of the microresonator. Microresonators fabricated in planar structures such as silicon nitride (Si3N4) allow for dispersion engineering and the possibility to monolithically integrate the microcomb with other photonic devices. However, the relatively large refractive index contrast and the tight optical confinement required for dispersion engineering make it challenging to attain Si3N4 microresonators with Qs > 10 000 000 using standard subtractive processing methods. In this work, we achieve ultra-smooth Si3N4 microresonators featuring mean intrinsic Qs around 11 million. The cross-section geometry can be precisely engineered in the telecommunications band to achieve either normal or anomalous dispersion, and we demonstrate the generation of mode-locked dark-pulse Kerr combs as well as soliton microcombs. Such high-Qs allow us to generate soliton microcombs with photodetectable repetition rates, demonstrated here for the first time in Si3N4 microresonators fabricated using a subtractive processing method. These results enhance the possibilities for co-integration of microcombs with high-performance photonic devices, such as narrow-linewidth external-cavity diode lasers, ultra-narrow filters and demultiplexers.

Abstract:Stable oscillations of optical vortices and acoustic modes in a Brillouin laser are demonstrated for the first time based on chiral photonic crystal fiber, which robustly supports helical Bloch modes that carry circularly polarized optical vortex and display circular birefringence. Topology‐selective stimulated Brillouin scattering effect dictates that the lasing vortex modes can be externally selected by pumping the appropriate mode. Optical vortices, which have been extensively studied over the last decades, offer an additional degree of freedom useful in many applications, such as optical tweezers and quantum control. Stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS), providing a narrow linewidth and a strong nonlinear response, has been used to realize quasi‐continuous wave lasers. Here, stable oscillation of optical vortices and acoustic modes in a Brillouin laser based on chiral photonic crystal fiber (PCF) is reported, which robustly supports helical Bloch modes (HBMs) that carry circularly polarized optical vortex and display circular birefringence. A narrow‐linewidth Brillouin fiber laser that stably emits 1st‐ and 2nd‐order vortex‐carrying HBMs is implemented. Angular momentum conservation selection rules dictate that pump and backward Brillouin signals have opposite topological charge and spin. Additionally, it is shown that when the chiral PCF is placed within a laser ring cavity, the linewidth‐narrowing associated with lasing permits the peak of the Brillouin gain that corresponds to acoustic mode to be measured with resolution of 10 kHz and accuracy of 520 kHz. The results pave the way to a new generation of vortex‐carrying SBS systems with applications in optical tweezers, quantum information processing, and vortex‐carrying nonreciprocal systems.
