Abstract:This study aimed to evaluate developmental patterns in athletic performance during youth and determine their association with changes in physical fitness. The testing included three athletic performance (i.e. ball speed in pitching, swing velocity in batting, 30-metre sprint time) and two physical fitness tests (i.e. medicine ball [MB] back throw and modified star excursion balance test [SEBT]). Data from 235 players (557 measurements) aged 6 to 14 were eligible for a longitudinal evaluation. The statistical analysis was based on the latent growth curve models of the athletic performance development process and the random-effect panel data multivariate regression analysis for ball speed, swing velocity, and 30-metre sprint time. The 30-metre sprint time showed a small curvature but an accelerated increase around 12‒13 years old. However, the ball speed, swing velocity, and modified SEBT demonstrated a slower or less accelerated change in the developmental pattern starting around 12‒13 years old. Multivariate longitudinal analysis revealed that developmental change in athletic performance was positively associated with age and MB back throw. Our findings highlight the developmental patterns of athletic performance associated with baseball exhibiting stagnation as well as acceleration, which may help develop effective age-appropriate strategies for improving performance in youth baseball players.

Background:In baseball, youth athletes play on smaller fields with shorter distances between bases, shorter pitching distances, and smaller mounds. Despite this, youth athletes use baseballs weighing the same amount as those used at the professional level, possibly predisposing youth baseball players to injuries.Purpose:(1) To determine the effects of throwing a smaller, lighter, and both smaller and lighter baseball on throwing arm stress in youth athletes and (2) to also investigate how changing the ball size and weight would affect elbow varus torque, shoulder distraction force, and throwing arm internal rotation velocity during the throwing motion.Study Design:Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3.Methods:This cross-sectional cohort study analyzed the kinematics and kinetics of 38 youth baseball players (mean age, 8.3 ± 0.8 years) throwing a baseball modified in size and weight. Three-dimensional motion data were collected using a retroreflective marker set and a 12-camera motion analysis system. Full-body kinematics and kinetics were calculated using commercial software. Participants threw 5 different types of baseballs 3 times each, in random order, with full effort from a pitching mound to a target 14 m away. The balls used were a 5-oz regular baseball, 5-oz (0.142-kg) baseball with a 5% reduced circumference, 4-oz (0.113-kg) baseball, 4-oz baseball with a 5% reduced circumference, and 3-oz (0.085-kg) baseball. Analysis of variance was used to determine statistical differences in elbow varus torque, shoulder distraction force, and throwing arm internal rotation velocity among baseball types. The Tukey post hoc test was used to further investigate differences between the ball groups, considering P < .05 to be significant.Results:Analysis of variance detected a significant difference in elbow varus torque among ball groups (P = .024). The Tukey post hoc test revealed a moderate difference in elbow varus torque between the 5-oz baseball (4.73 ± 1.06 percentage body weight × height [%BW × H]) and 3-oz baseball (4.06 ± 0.83 %BW × H) (P = .017; d = 0.677 [95% CI, 0.08-1.27]). No significant differences were found in shoulder distraction force or throwing arm internal rotation velocity among ball groups.Conclusion:Compared with a 5-oz baseball, throwing a 3-oz baseball resulted in decreased elbow varus torque with a moderate effect size.

Abstract:The H‐2Kd gene, which encodes a mouse major transplantation antigen, was transfected into L TK‐ mouse fibroblasts. Two transcripts of the gene were detected by S1 nuclease mapping analysis. They correspond to two previously characterized cDNA clones isolated from DBA/2 mouse liver RNA, leading to the conclusion that the H‐2Kd gene gives rise to two distinct transcripts through an alternate use of splicing sites. The non‐canonical RNA potentially encodes a so far undescribed H‐2Kd‐like molecule. It is present in all tissues tested (liver, spleen, thymus, kidney) albeit in lower amounts (approximately 10‐fold less) than the canonical RNA coding for H‐2Kd.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Strength of body segments and bat velocity during the baseball swing have been described as positively related, but the relative importance of each body segment's strength and the effect of ball location in the strike zone have not been examined. OBJECTIVE: To identify the correlation between the strength of different body segments along the kinetic chain and bat velocity with the ball placed at different locations within the strike zone, and to determine which segment's strength best predicts bat velocity. METHODS: Nineteen adult baseball hitters were assessed for bat velocity at five ball locations and tested for isokinetic trunk, shoulder, and knee strength. Strength variables significantly correlated to bat velocity were used in backward stepping linear regression. RESULTS: Trunk rotation strength was significantly correlated to bat velocity for all ball locations. Knee strength was significant for all locations except for high inside. Shoulder strength was significant only with the ball outside. Based on regression analysis, trunk rotation strength was the only significant predictor. CONCLUSIONS: Significant correlations between chosen strength variables and bat velocity were identified. Only trunk rotation strength was a significant predictor of bat velocity. Baseball hitters seeking greater bat velocity may benefit from targeting trunk rotation strength.

Abstract:A simple strategy for attitude maneuver of an axisymmetric spinning solar sail is proposed. To achieve a large-angle slew maneuver, the center of mass along the spin axis is adjusted, which means that utilization of the moving mass along the spin axis is possible. The time-optimal problem is formulated using the maximum principle; the solution is a typical bang-bang control. To avoid solving the bang-bang control, a hybrid performance index including the transfer time and the total moving distance of the moving mass is adopted to solve the optimal control problem using the pseudospectral method. The maneuver time is identified for different spin rates, different maximum allowed offsets between mass center and pressure center, different sizes of solar sail, and different maneuver targets.
Range of Motion and Muscle Strength Changes in Japanese Professional Pitchers During the Baseball Season

Abstract:Background: There are no studies examining changes in the physical function throughout the baseball season in Japanese professional players. We examined the range of motion (ROM) and muscle strength changes in professional baseball pitchers as the season progresses. Materials and methods: Five professional baseball pitchers were included. ROM, flexibility, and muscle strength of the trunk and shoulder, elbow, hip, knee, and ankle joints were measured pre-season (PRE), mid-season (MID), and post-season (POST). Results: The total shoulder arc ROM of the dominant sides significantly decreased compared to that of the nondominant sides at MID and POST. Shoulder abduction muscle strength of the dominant sides significantly decreased at POST compared to that at PRE. In the trunk, lateral flexion ROM of bilateral sides significantly decreased at MID and POST compared to that at PRE, and the duration time of the side bridge test of the dominant sides significantly decreased at POST to that at PRE. Hip extension ROM and muscle strength and internal rotation ROM of the push-off leg significantly decreased at POST compared to that at PRE. Conclusion: The total shoulder arc ROM and shoulder abductor muscle strength of the dominant sides, trunk lateral flexion ROM and muscle strength, push-off leg hip joint extension muscle strength and ROM, and internal rotation ROM were more susceptible to changes as the season progressed. In order to maintain performance and prevent a throwing disorder, it is necessary to focus on these movements during the season and to appropriately train and condition these muscle groups.

Abstract:Background: Elbow injuries among adolescent baseball players have been outpacing those of college and professional players. In attempts to prevent injuries and maximize return-to-play potential following injury, attention has been focused on “return to throw” programs, which include long-toss throws. Because the few studies that were conducted on long-toss throwing focused primarily on college-aged athletes, it is not known what type of load is incurred at the elbow during interval throwing progression among high school baseball players. Purpose: To quantify the change in arm slot, arm speed, shoulder external rotation, and elbow varus torque across increasing throwing distances within a given athlete. Study Design: Descriptive laboratory study. Methods: Ninety-five high school baseball players performed a long-toss protocol while wearing an inertial sensor and sleeve. Each participant was tested for 5 throws at distances of 9 m, 18 m, 27 m, 37 m, and 46 m. Linear mixed-effects models and likelihood ratio tests were used to estimate the within-participant relationship between throw distance and arm slot, arm speed, shoulder external rotation, and elbow varus torque. Results: Arm slot ( P < .01), arm speed ( P < .01), shoulder external rotation ( P < .01), and elbow varus torque ( P < .01) were significantly associated with long-toss throw distance. As the throw distance increased, there was an increase in arm speed and shoulder external rotation and a decrease in arm slot for each distance. However, elbow varus torque increased with each distance up to 37 m and then remained the same at 46 m. Conclusion: The use of longer distances for conditioning and rehabilitation may be beneficial in increasing shoulder range of motion and arm speed; however, precaution needs to be taken, as throwing longer distances are accompanied by an increase in arm rotation, arm speed, and elbow torque, with a decrease in arm slot. Clinical Relevance: Return-to-throw programs have been utilized by sports medicine clinicians and coaches to help guide a player during rehabilitation. These programs involve throwing at increased efforts through increased distances with no immediate feedback on elbow stress. This investigation describes arm biomechanical changes during submaximum interval throwing and demonstrates a tool that can be utilized to measure arm stress in real time for clinicians and athletes progressing through an interval throwing program.

Abstract:The strength of the shoulder musculature involved with internal rotation and arm extension plays an important role in the overhead throwing motion for baseball athletes, both for throwing-related performance and injury risk. The maintenance of shoulder strength is a high priority for baseball athletes throughout a season; however, little is known in regards to the expected changes in strength throughout a season. To examine pre-post changes in shoulder strength, lower body power, and body composition among collegiate baseball players after the completion of a summer baseball league season. Amateur baseball players (n = 12; age: 20.9 ± 1.0 years.; height: 181.6 ± 5.6 cm; body mass: 86.4 ± 11.1 kg; BMI: 26.0 ± 2.6 kg/m2) participated in the current study. Pre- and post-competitive season, the participants completed shoulder strength assessments and body composition and countermovement vertical jump (CMJ) tests. An upper-body isometric test (athletic shoulder [ASH] test) was used to evaluate shoulder strength for each arm. Each subject completed maximal isometric contractions for both the throwing and non-throwing arms at four separate angles of abduction (180°, 'I'; 135°, 'Y'; 90°, 'T'; and -180°, 'A') while lying in a prone position. For shoulder strength, the primary dependent variable of interest was a composite measure that represented the average of the forces produced across all four positions of the ASH test (I, Y, T, A). For the ASH test composite measure, there was a trend toward a significant arm-by-time interaction effect (p = 0.08), as shoulder strength decreased by 9.03% for the throwing arm (ES = 0.72; 95% CI = [-0.27, -0.01]), compared to only 2.03% for the non-throwing arm (ES = 0.15; 95% CI = [-0.16, 0.09]), over the course of the season. The main effects of time (p = 0.16) and arm (p = 0.58) were not significant for the ASH test composite measure. There was no relationship between lower body power and throwing arm strength at baseline (r = 0.20, p = 0.56), and only a non-significant weak relationship at post-test (r = 0.28, p = 0.41). Throughout a season, baseball players may experience reductions in shoulder strength of the throwing arm with minimal changes in shoulder strength in the non-throwing arm.

Abstract:The American Journal of Sports Medicine, Ahead of Print. Background:Improper sequencing order of maximal joint and segment velocities has been identified as an important predictor for both throwing arm kinetics and ball velocity.Purpose:To investigate the intrapitcher variation of maximal segment velocities and the relationship to throwing arm kinetics and ball velocity in high school (HS) and professional (PRO) pitchers.Study Design:Descriptive laboratory study.Methods:HS (n = 59) and PRO (n = 338) pitchers, instructed to throw 8 to 12 fastball pitches, were evaluated with 3-dimensional motion capture (480 Hz). Maximal joint and segment velocities were calculated for each pitch, and the standard deviation of the maxima was calculated per pitcher. These standard deviations were used to classify pitchers as "low variance" or "high variance" for each segmental velocity subgroup, "overall low variance" or "overall high variance" based on cumulative segment velocity variation, or "population," with any pitcher eligible to be included in multiple subcategories. Maximal velocities and throwing arm kinetics were compared among the various subgroups.Results:The HS low-variance shoulder internal rotation velocity subgroup (4949 ± 642 deg/s) had significantly lower maximal shoulder internal rotation velocity compared with HS population (5774 ± 1057 deg/s) (P < .001); similar findings were observed for PROs (5269 ± 835 vs 5824 ± 1076 deg/s; P < .001), as well as lower shoulder superior force compared with the PRO population (14.8% ± 8.8% vs 17.8% ± 8.8% body weight; P = .001). The PRO low-variance lead knee extension velocity subgroup had significantly lower maximal lead knee extension velocity (216 ± 135 vs 258 ± 125 deg/s; P = .001) and shoulder distractive force (111.5% ± 14.4% vs 115.6% ± 15.9% body weight; P = .003) compared with the PRO population. The PRO overall low-variance subgroup had significantly lower shoulder distractive force (111.8% ± 14.1% vs 119.6% ± 15.5% body weight; P = .008) and elbow anterior force (40.6% ± 5.0% vs 43.6% ± 6.2% body weight; P = .008) compared with the PRO overall high-variance subgroup.Conclusion:HS and PRO pitchers with low variance for joint and segment velocities achieved significantly lower maximal velocities in the subgroup of interest, while preserving ball velocity. PRO pitchers with overall low variance among multiple maximal joint and segment velocities demonstrated decreased shoulder distractive and elbow anterior force.Clinical Relevance:PRO pitchers with low intrapitch variation in maximal joint and segment velocities may be viewed as kinetically conservative throwers. These pitchers with similarly maintained mechanics between pitches may have an increasingly regimented form that preserves kinetic forces about the throwing arm. The opposite may be true for PRO pitchers with increased variability in segmental velocities during their pitching motion, as they showed increased throwing arm kinetics including shoulder distractive and elbow anterior force compared with the overall low-variance group, theoretically increasing their risk of injury.

Relationship Between Upper-Body Strength and Bat Swing Speed in High-School Baseball Players

Abstract:This study aimed to clarify the relationship between upper-body strength and bat swing speed in high-school baseball players and to examine the physical characteristics of home run hitters (sluggers). The subjects were 30 male high-school baseball players with national tournament experience at the Koshien Stadium. Bat swing speed exerted by full effort was measured with a microwave-type speed-measuring instrument. One-repetition maximum (1RM) of a bench press (BP), BP power (bench power) using a light load (30 kg), and isokinetic chest press (0.4, 0.8, 1.2 m·s(-1)) were measured as upper-body strength. The relationships between bat swing speed and upper-body strength values were examined. Additionally, the t-test was used to reveal the mean differences between 14 home run hitters (group A) and 16 mediocre hitters (group B) for each measurement value. The bat swing speed showed significant and middle correlations with the 1RM BP (r = 0.59), bench power (0.41), and isokinetic chest press (0.48-0.55). Group A had significantly higher values in bench power and isokinetic chest press (high-speed) per kilogram of body weight than did group B. The swing speed showed significant correlations (r = 0.62) with the 1RM BP in group B but not in group A. In conclusion, to improve the hitting power of high-school baseball players, it may also be important to develop bench power with light loads in addition to 1RM BP.

J Strength Cond Res 37(6): 1327-1338, 2023-Whole-body kinematics and kinetics impact pitching performance, and when coordination of momentum transfer is impacted, throwing-related injury risks increase. Although correlations between overhead throwing velocity and lower-body power measured by jump tests have been reported by previous studies, further research is needed to identify these relationships to better understand pitching mechanics and the validity and application of jump tests for the assessment of baseball pitchers. This review communicates effective whole-body pitching mechanics, including throwing arm, trunk, and pelvis, and lower body, as well as discusses the applicability of strength and power field tests to deepen training insights in establishing more efficient motor patterns. If both lower-body power and coordination of momentum transfer are optimized, baseball pitchers may experience reduced throwing arm stress. The overarching insight to be gained from this review article is that high performance in baseball pitching is multifactorial, and attention to both strength and skill coaching is paramount. As a result, the intersection of lower-body power testing and biomechanical analysis can play an important role in uniting strength and conditioning professionals, clinicians, pitching coaches, and biomechanics experts to advance pitching performance and health in the sport of baseball.

Abstract:This study aimed to reveal individual differences between the speeds of the hand and ball and clarify the factors affecting those differences. Motion data from 20 highly skilled baseball pitchers, captured using a 16-camera motion analysis system with a sampling frequency of 1,000 hz, were used for correlation and hierarchical linear model analyses. For the hierarchical linear models, the speed of the metacarpophalangeal joint was the independent variable in the 1 st level. The independent variables chosen in the 2 nd level were the variables regarding the finger length, mean peak angular velocities, and mean peak accelerations of the middle finger joint. Intra-subject correlation analysis showed high positive correlation coefficients between the metacarpophalangeal joint and ball speeds, ranging from 0.803 to 0.992. The difference between the hand and ball speeds ranged from 8.4 m∙s −1 to 12.0 m∙s −1 . The hierarchical linear model analyses indicated that the individual differences between the speeds of the hand and ball were partly accounted for by the mean peak accelerations of the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints, suggesting that the force exerted by proximal interphalangeal joint flexion plays an important role in ball speed increment.

Abstract:This pilot study integrated sport expertise and biomechanics methodologies within a baseball batting task. Purpose was to examine differences within a highly skilled group of baseball batters to use visual information to guide weight transfer and bat movements. One batter who played at Major League Baseball (MLB) level was compared to five batters who played at Australian Baseball League (ABL) level in a case-control design. Batters faced pitchers in a simulated competition and attempted to hit pitches, while vision was temporally occluded during ball flight or not occluded. Time of weight transfer (kinetics), as well as bat downswing initiation and duration (kinematics) from the point of ball release, were compared between the MLB batter and ABL batters. Results indicated that the MLB batter coordinated his striking pattern by completing his weight transfer earlier than the ABL batters. His bat downswing was also initiated earlier than some ABL batters, but there was no difference in duration of bat downswing between batters. All batters initiated bat downswing prior to completion of weight transfer. Understanding of motor expertise is furthered using a novel methodology.

Abstract:[Purpose] This study aimed to investigate the changes in the trunk and pelvic lateral tilt angles at the shoulder's maximum external rotation during the late cocking phase (MER) and ball release (BR) and hip muscle strength during repetitive throwing. [Participants and Methods] In this study, 12 male baseball players participated. During the throwing, which was filmed using a high-speed video camera, the trunk and pelvic lateral tilt angles toward the nonthrowing side were measured at the MER and BR. Hip muscle strength during abduction, adduction, and external internal rotations were measured on the throwing and nonthrowing sides. Repetitive throwing was performed for nine innings, with 15 pitches per inning. Throwing motion was compared during innings 1, 7, 8, and 9. Hip muscle strength was measured before and after repetitive throwing. [Results] Compared with the trunk lateral tilt angle toward the nonthrowing side at BR in inning 1, the angle in innings 8 and 9 increased. The strength of hip abduction, adduction, and external and internal rotations on the throwing and nonthrowing sides decreased after repetitive throwing. [Conclusion] Hip muscle strength decreases after 135 pitches, and throwing >120 pitches changes the trunk lateral tilt angle at BR.

Abstract:The American Journal of Sports Medicine, Ahead of Print. Background:Individual maximum joint and segment angular velocities have shown positive associations with throwing arm kinetics and ball velocity in baseball pitchers.Purpose:To observe how cumulative maximum joint and segment angular velocities, irrespective of sequence, affect ball velocity and throwing arm kinetics in high school pitchers.Study Design:Descriptive laboratory study.Methods:High school (n = 55) pitchers threw 8 to 12 fastball pitches while being evaluated with 3-dimensional motion capture (480 Hz). Maximum joint and segment angular velocities (lead knee extension, pelvis rotation, trunk rotation, shoulder internal rotation, and forearm pronation) were calculated for each pitcher. Pitchers were classified as overall fast, overall slow, or high velocity for each joint or segment velocity subcategory, or as population, with any pitcher eligible to be included in multiple subcategories. Kinematic and kinetic parameters were compared among the various subgroups using t tests with post hoc regressions and multivariable regression models created to predict throwing arm kinetics and ball velocity, respectively.Results:The lead knee extension and pelvis rotation velocity subgroups achieved significantly higher normalized elbow varus torque (P = .016) and elbow flexion torque (P = .018) compared with population, with equivalent ball velocity (P = .118). For every 1-SD increase in maximum pelvis rotation velocity (87 deg/s), the normalized elbow distractive force increased by 4.7% body weight (BW) (B = 0.054; β = 0.290; P = .013). The overall fast group was older (mean ± standard deviation, 16.9 ± 1.4 vs 15.4 ± 0.9 years; P = .007), had 8.9-mph faster ball velocity (32.7 ± 3.1 vs 28.7 ± 2.3 m/s; P = .002), and had significantly higher shoulder internal rotation torque (63.1 ± 17.4 vs 43.6 ± 12.0 Nm; P = .005), elbow varus torque (61.8 ± 16.4 vs 41.6 ± 11.4 Nm; P = .002), and elbow flexion torque (46.4 ± 12.0 vs 29.5 ± 6.8 Nm; P < .001) compared with the overall slow group. A multiregression model for ball velocity based on maximum joint and segment angular velocities and anthropometrics predicted 53.0% of variance.Conclusion:High school pitchers with higher maximum joint and segment velocities, irrespective of sequence, demonstrated older age and faster ball velocity at the cost of increased throwing shoulder and elbow kinetics.Clinical Relevance:Pitchers and coaching staff should consider this trade-off between faster ball velocity and increasing throwing arm kinetics, an established risk factor for elbow injury.

Abstract:Background: Over the past decade, research has attempted to elucidate the cause of throwing-related injuries in the baseball athlete. However, when considering the entire kinetic chain, full body mechanics, and pitching cycle sequencing, there are hundreds of variables that could influence throwing arm health, and there is a lack of quality investigations evaluating the relationship and influence of multiple variables on arm stress. Purpose: To identify which variables have the most influence on elbow valgus torque and shoulder distraction force using a statistical model and a machine learning approach. Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: A retrospective review was performed on baseball pitchers who underwent biomechanical evaluation at the university biomechanics laboratory. Regression models and 4 machine learning models were created for both elbow valgus torque and shoulder distraction force. All models utilized the same predictor variables, which included pitch velocity and 17 pitching mechanics. Results: The analysis included a total of 168 high school and collegiate pitchers with a mean age of 16.7 years (SD, 3.2 years) and BMI of 24.4 (SD, 1.2). For both elbow valgus torque and shoulder distraction force, the gradient boosting machine models demonstrated the smallest root mean square errors and the most precise calibrations compared with all other models. The gradient boosting model for elbow valgus torque reported the highest influence for pitch velocity (relative influence, 28.4), with 5 mechanical variables also having significant influence. The gradient boosting model for shoulder distraction force reported the highest influence for pitch velocity (relative influence, 20.4), with 6 mechanical variables also having significant influence. Conclusion: The gradient boosting machine learning model demonstrated the best overall predictive performance for both elbow valgus torque and shoulder distraction force. Pitch velocity was the most influential variable in both models. However, both models also revealed that pitching mechanics, including maximum humeral rotation velocity, shoulder abduction at foot strike, and maximum shoulder external rotation, significantly influenced both elbow and shoulder stress. Clinical Relevance: The results of this study can be used to inform players, coaches, and clinicians on specific mechanical variables that may be optimized to mitigate elbow or shoulder stress that could lead to throwing-related injury.
Differences in Muscle Power Between the Dominant and Nondominant Upper Limbs of Baseball Players

Abstract:We examined the differences in muscle power between the dominant and nondominant upper limbs of 33 healthy, right-handed, university baseball players (mean age, 20.4 ± 1.1 years) with an average baseball experience >11 years. After measuring maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of hand grip, elbow flexion, and shoulder internal rotation in both upper limbs, the muscle power of each joint was measured at 40%, 50%, and 60% MVC. No significant differences were observed in the main factors affecting MVC and elbow flexion power loads between dominant and nondominant upper limbs. For handgrip power, load factors at 40% MVC in the dominant hand were lower than those at 60% MVC in the same hand and those at 50% and 60% MVC in the nondominant hand. Significant differences were observed in shoulder internal rotation power between dominant and nondominant upper limbs, with the dominant limb having greater power at all loads. Correlations between muscle power of both upper limbs for handgrip and elbow flexion were significant and moderately high at all loads. For shoulder internal rotation power, the degree of correlation was significant and moderately high at 40% MVC but low to moderate at 50% and 60% MVC. Therefore, baseball players have marked lateral dominance in shoulder internal rotation power unlike handgrip and elbow flexion power, although the relationship between shoulder internal rotation muscle powers of both upper limbs becomes lower with increasing load. The dominance of muscle power of each joint varied even in the same upper limb. It is thus beneficial for baseball players to train with even loads on both arms or adopt simultaneous workout of both arms after adjusting for strength differences.
