Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has been widely researched and used for sustainable energy, sensing and other applications in recent years due to its energy conversion properties. However, in practical applications, TENG is often exposed to complex and harsh environments, so ensuring its stable output performance is a significant challenge. Here, a flexible, superhydrophobic and environmentally resistant TENG for energy harvesting and self-powered sensing is proposed by a cost-effective surface modification and co-blending method. The roughness, hydrophobicity and surface potential of the composites are significantly enhanced by the introduction of surface modified BN (m-BN), resulting in excellent triboelectric output (43 W/m(2)) of the m-BN/TENG. Moreover, the m-BN/TENG not only maintains 90% initial electrical output at 80% humidity but also its output performance has no noticeable change after treatment with acid and alkali. Apart from energy harvesting, the TENG has been demonstrated as a self-powered humidity sensor with a sensitivity of - 80 nA RH-1 and a selfpowered droplet detector with an ultra-fast response time of 0.6 ms. Our work provides a practical approach for stable energy harvesting and self-powered sensing of TENG in harsh environments.

Abstract:The increasing potential of wearable electronics has been motivating the development of self-powered devices to overcome the restriction imposed by conventional power supply. Herein, a kind of highly electronegative and conducing material of MXene nanosheet has been innovatively integrated with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) for electrospinning nanofibers film to fabricate flexible all-electrospun triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG). Silk fibroin (SF) was chosen for electrospinning nanofibers film to serve as electron donor for TENG with great triboelectricity and biocompatible nature. The MXene-based all-electrospun nanogenerator shows excellent stability and durability as well as extraordinary electrical performance, which supports an instantaneously maximum peak power density of 1087.6 mW/m(2) as the load resistance is 5.0 M Omega. Moreover, beyond harvesting electrical power, the fabricated TENG was utilized for real-time monitoring various types of body motion. Lastly, we used the developed TENG to power electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) chip to actuate droplet transport. Considering the excellent triboelectric performance, ease of large-scale manufacturing, and environmental friendliness, this MXene-based all-electrospun TENG provides a promising solution for developing practical, flexible, and self-powered electronic devices.

Abstract:The use of triboelectric nanogenerators to collect low-frequency mechanical energy has received widespread attention in recent years. Among these, single-electrode triboelectric nanogenerators have been studied for use as a power supply source for wearable electronic devices due to their simple and stable structure. The stability, hydrophobicity, and permeability under harsh environments are surely more pressing issues in the development and utilization of wearable devices. Herein, a superhydrophobic poly(vinylidene fluoride) nanofiber membrane with built-in polydopamine-coated carbon cloth electrode was prepared using electrostatic spinning technology and spraying process to develop an all-fiber-based single electrode triboelectric nanogenerator (F-TENG). The results show that the triboelectric nanogenerator has an open-circuit voltage of up to 270 V, a short-circuit current of up to 80 μA, and a maximum power density of about 1.79 W/m2. The F-TENG can quickly recover the electrical energy output after being affected by water droplets and has an excellent sensing performance with stability during repeated water spraying. It was suggested that the prepared F-TENG with good air permeability, flexibility, superhydrophobicity, and self-cleaning capability can be used to power IoT devices exposed to harsh environments, thus making it a self-powered energy source for wearable electronic devices.

Abstract:With the rapid advancement in Internet of Things (IoTs), it is possible to construct the self-charging power system integrated of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) and supercapacitor (SC), an excellent tool for simultaneous conversion and storage of distributed environmental energy. Particularly, the highly explored Ti3C2Tx MXene materials in field of TENG are short of high and stable power density, mainly due to charge dissipation effect on surface. Herein, the effectiveness of MXene is enhanced by encrusting TiO2 on its inner and outer surface via hydrothermal method. TiO2, inherent with dielectric properties, could serve bifunctionally as electron trapping/blocking and surface polarizing entity, mitigating the diffusion and drifting of surficial tribo-charges and thus, increasing output TENG performance. The integrated TENG based on MXene/TiO2 composites with 3 mM concentration of TiO2 outperforms with higher output voltage of 110 V, which is 1.83-fold of pristine MXene-based TENG, and achieves maximum instantaneous power density of ~1440 mW/m2. Other side, TiO2 is conductive to pseudo-faradaic reactions and the integrated MXene/TiO2 based symmetric SC exhibits enhanced specific capacitance of 231.08 F/g at 1 A/g, which is 4.52-fold of pristine MXene, with maximum energy density of 12.74 W h kg-1 at power density of 483.06 W kg-1. Finally, utilizing polyimide sheets as substrates, the flexible self-charging power system was integrated where TENG charges the SC up to 0.8 V with charging/discharging time of 37 s/40 s, showing great insights towards the demands of flexible and self-powered electronics.

Abstract:The triboelectric material properties and mechanical stability of the contact layer are vital to achieving durable triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) with high output performance. Herein, a novel MXene/Ecoflex nanocomposite is introduced as a promising triboelectric material because of its highly negative triboelectric properties and mechanical stability. The MXene/Ecoflex nanocomposite with a fabric‐based waterproof TENG (FW‐TENG) is fabricated and designed to universally harvest energy from various human motions as well as the natural environment (rain and wind). The fabricated FW‐TENG delivers a maximum output peak power of 3.69 mW and a power density of 9.24 W m−2, respectively, at a matching load resistance of 4.5 MΩ under a frequency of 4.5 Hz and a force of 8 N. Furthermore, the applicability of this device in various products is investigated. The FW‐TENG can protect against a crash caused by rainy and humid weather. An FW‐TENG‐based self‐powered smart active device that detects motion on a carpet is demonstrated and is equipped with sleep monitoring motion sensors. The FW‐TENG not only has self‐powered benefits and excellent mechanical amenability but is also exceptionally reliable and stable against water intrusion, which are important characteristics to realize next‐generation wearable/portable technologies.

Abstract:Raindrops are an abundant micromechanical renewable energy source in nature, and raindrop energy harvesting has always been a research hotspot. Traditional hydropower generation is not suitable for low-frequency energy harvesting, and it is difficult to realize distributed energy harvesting. The development of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a promising strategy for converting raindrop energy in the environment into electrical energy. Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite has received much attention due to its excellent chemical stability and insulating properties for TENG. However, the deficiency of the low output performance and insufficient hydrophobicity of PDMS limits the application of PDMS in droplet energy capture. Modification of PDMS can improve the droplet energy collection capability of the liquid–solid contact triboelectric (LS-TENG). In this work, a new approach to modifying polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) as a hydrophobic negative triboelectric material using a high dielectric constant MXene and a hydrophobic nano-SiO2 was reported. The as-prepared composites′ permittivity and triboelectric performance were remarkably promoted as compared to composites without interfacial modification. In addition, the use of composites for TENG assembly improved the open-circuit voltage and short-circuit current by a factor of 47.5 and 25.21, respectively, compared to pure PDMS. Application of the composite to the assembled TENG was employed as energy harvester to light up LEDs and charge a capacitor. In addition, a cathodic protection system was designed to demonstrate its potential application in the field of electrochemistry. This provides guidance for the practical implementation of TENGs in the field of electrochemical cathodic protection.

Abstract:With the rapid development of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs), the exploration of self-powered, flexible, and wearable electronic devices has attracted widespread attention. However, the choice of tribomaterials and high humidity environment have a significant impact on the triboelectricity of TENG. Therefore, we prepared a composite fabric (HPC) with superhydrophobic and conductive properties, which was used simultaneously as a tribopositive material and electrode for the construction of promising wearable TENGs. Specifically, the loading of polydopamine, carbon nanotubes, and polypyrrole on the surface of the cotton fabric makes it have not only conductivity but also enhanced tribopositive polarity. Then, cetyltrimethoxysilane was selected to modify it to obtain superhydrophobicity. Compared with the common TENGs with a separate tribolayer and electrode, the integrated HPC-TENG shows the advantages of simpler structure and lighter wear. Moreover, compared with the unmodified fabric-based TENG, the performance of the proposed HPC-TENG is improved by nearly 7.2 times, and the maximum power density can reach 2.6 W m-2. This remarkable output can be attributed to the combination of strong electron-giving groups, high electrical conductivity, and abundant micro- and nanorough structure of the HPC fabric. More importantly, due to the water repellency of the fabric surface, the high output performance can be maintained under high humidity conditions. In addition, HPC-TENG has potential applications as pressure sensors for human motion status monitoring and multichannel sensing for smart game blanket entertainment. The newly designed HPC-TENG offers a new strategy for the development of superhydrophobic fabrics with an electrical conductivity, energy harvesting, and self-powered sensor.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) play a vital role in self-powered electronics, based on their superior energy harvesting ability and simple construction. In this work, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel is fabricated, exhibiting a three-dimensional (3D) network structure that allows PVA chains to be covered by a large amount of water. Combining MXene nanosheets with the hydrogel TENG, the composite improves the ion transport of the hydrogel and provides the streaming vibration potential (SVP) mechanism. This composite effectively enhances the output performance of hydrogel TENG. Furthermore, this work adopts different functional groups of silane (APTES, CPTMS, FOTS) to modify the surface work function of MXene nanosheets. The surface modification increases the charge density at the interface between MXene and water inside the hydrogel, improving the electrical output performance and mechanical sensitivity of MXene hydrogel TENG (MH-TENG). The result demonstrates that the electrical output performance of MH-TENGs modified by 1H,1H,2H,2H-Perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (FOTS) is approximately two times larger (output-voltage ~ 85 V/output-current ~ 240 nA) than pristine hydrogel TENG (output-voltage ~ 40 V/output-current ~ 100 nA). The MH-TENG behaves unlimited potential in the use of flexible electronics, such as movement monitoring electronics, strength sensors on the paddle, and wearable energy harvesting devices in the future.
Achieving Ultrahigh Effective Surface Charge Density of Direct‐Current Triboelectric Nanogenerator in High Humidity

Abstract:A humidity‐resistive direct‐current triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) based on the triboelectrification effect and electrostatic breakdown is reported to address the output attenuation of conventional TENGs in high humidity environments. This work not only provides a promising guidance on the design of high‐performance TENG in high humidity environments, but also establishes a foundation for its practical applications in large‐scale energy harvesting. As an emerging energy‐harvesting technology, the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is considered a powerful driving force toward the new‐era of Internet of Things and artificial intelligence, but its output performance is dramatically influenced by environmental humidity. Herein, a direct current TENG (DC‐TENG) based on the triboelectrification effect and electrostatic breakdown is reported to address the problem of output attenuation in high humidity environments for the conventional TENGs. It is found that high humidity not only enhances the sliding triboelectrification effect of hydrophobic triboelectric materials, but also promotes the electrostatic breakdown process for DC‐TENG, thus contributing to the improvement of DC‐TENG output. Furthermore, taking poly(vinyl chloride) film as the friction layer, the effective surface charge density of DC‐TENG with microstructure‐designed electrode achieves a milestone value of ≈2.97 mC m−2 under 90% relative humidity, which is almost 1.42‐fold larger than that under 30% RH. This work not only establishes an effective methodology to boost the output performance of TENG in a high humidity environment, but also establishes a foundation for its practical applications in large‐scale energy harvesting.

Abstract:In this paper, we evaluate the potential of a rate-adaptive hybrid link, combining LED based optical wireless and 60 GHz technologies. These links over short backhauling distances are well suited for the deployment of small radio cells in 5G mobile networks. Results from a 4.5-month outdoor field trial indicate that the availability for both links is 100%. The throughput of the LED-based optical link is higher in 90% of all cases while the 60 GHz link has a higher minimal throughput. If both links are aggregated, the hybrid link offers minimal/average/ maximal data rates of 230/750/880 Mbps over 100 m in all weather conditions.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) represent an emerging technology in energy harvesting, medical treatment, and information technology. Flexible, portable, and self-powered electronic devices based on TENGs are much desired, whereas the complex preparation processes and high cost of traditional flexible electrodes hinder their practical applications. Here, an MXene/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel TENG (MH-TENG) is presented with simple fabrication, high output performance, and versatile applications. The doping of MXene nanosheets promotes the crosslinking of the PVA hydrogel and improves the stretchability of the composite hydrogel. The MXene nanosheets also form microchannels on surfaces, which not only enhances the conductivity of the hydrogel by improving the transport of ions but also generates an extra triboelectric output via a streaming vibration potential mechanism. The measured open-circuit voltage of the MH-TENG reaches up to 230 V even in a single-electrode mode. The MH-TENG can be stretched up to 200% of the original length and demonstrates a monotonical increasing relationship between the stretchable length and the short-circuit voltage. By utilizing the MH-TENG's outstanding stretchable property and ultrahigh sensitivity to mechanical stimuli, applications in wearable movement monitoring, high-precision written stroke recognition, and low-frequency mechanical energy harvesting are demonstrated.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) have attracted wide attention in recent years for powering wearable electronics. However, the electrical output of TENGs is severely affected in high-humidity environments, which greatly limits their applications. Herein, we reported a waterproof, humidity-resistant TENG consisting of three-dimensional (3D) micro-structured polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) film and polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofiber/zinc oxide nanorods (ZnO NRs) composite membranes triboelectric material. Hereafter, we call it 3D PDMS-ZnO/PAN TENG. The introduction of ZnO NRs on PAN nanofiber and 3D structured PDMS significantly enhances the electrical output of the fully packaged TENG, offering a maximum power density of 184.6 μW/cm2. Under the impact force of 30 N at 2 Hz frequency, the fabricated TENG can generate voltage and current of approximately 166 V and 37 μA. In addition, the TENG also exhibits an excellent electrical output performance at high humidity (up to 92 % RH) and even inside water. We further show that our TENG can work as a sustainable power source to drive commercial light-emitting diodes (LEDs), calculator, and hygrothermograph. Given its excellent electrical output performance in water and humid conditions, the TENG has a great potential for powering outdoor electronics in extreme weather.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerators (TENG) have shown great potential in harvesting energy from water. For the TENG that harvests water energy, surface hydrophobicity is crucial for its performance. In this paper, we prepare a hydrophobic composite film of Polyvinylidene Fluoride/Polydimethylsiloxane/Polytetrafluoroethylene (PVDF/PDMS/PTFE) and an electrode of Polyaniline/Carbon nanotubes/Silver nanowires (PANI/CNTs/AgNWs) by electrospinning technology and a doping method, respectively, which are served as the friction layer and top electrode of TENG. The contact angle of the hydrophobic film and electrode both reach over 120°, which makes the separation process between water and the interface complete and promotes the output of TENG. The open-circuit voltage (Voc) and short-circuit current (Isc) can reach 150 V and 60 μA approximately. In addition, the composite electrode can be applied in the preparation of complex electrode shapes. Furthermore, the different reactions of TENG to different liquids indicate that it may contribute to liquid-type sensing systems. This work presents an efficient approach to fabricating hydrophobic films and electrodes, laying a foundation for the development of TENG for harvesting water energy.

Abstract:Low output performances and output retention rates in high humid environments represent serious challenges that have interrupted the large-scale application of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) as portable power supplies and self-powered sensors. Existing approaches of tribo-material optimization and device structure design remain limited in solving the problems of low electrical outputs and output retention rates for TENGs. Here, achieving high electrical outputs and output retention rate in a TENG based on a multi-effect inner-layer and a superhydrophobic outer-layer is first proposed by an organic-inorganic composite and simple self-assembly electrospinning. The inner-layer consisting of polyimide (PI) and 0.85Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3-0.15SrTiO3 (NBT-15ST) ceramic particles (CPs) can distinctly enhance the electrical performances of the device by coupling charge storage effect and hysteretic dielectric polarization. Under a maximum instantaneous force of 50 N, the device delivers a voltage of 1020 V and a current density of 32.5 μA cm−2. Meanwhile, the superhydrophobic outer-layer with novel biomimetic multilevel structures endowing the device with a superior output retention rate of 50% at a high relative humidity of 80%. This work provides a new strategy to optimize the electrical outputs of the TENG and extends its application in humid conditions.

Abstract:Triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) is a new energy technology, which can effectively convert ambient various mechanical energy into electricity by coupling effect of triboelectrification and electrostatic induction, yielding self-powered microelectronic devices. However, the surface charge density of triboelectric materials and the performance degradation and failure of TENG caused by wear are the key bottlenecks for its practical application. Here, we propose a high-performance and long-life TENG for harvesting wind energy that uses polyvinyl chloride/molybdenum disulfide (PVC/MoS2) composite membranes and polyamide (PA) membranes as matching triboelectric materials, and aluminum (Al) sheets with micro-nano structures as electrodes. Adding a small amount of MoS2 with excellent lubricating properties can not only effectively increase the surface charge density of composite films but also improve its wear resistance, which enhances the output performance and extends the life time of the TENG. The optimized TENG can generate an output voltage, current and maximum power up to 398 V, 40 μA and 1.23 mW, respectively, which can power tens of commercial light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and a water thermometer. Moreover, the friction coefficient of PVC after the doping of 2.5 wt% MoS2 is 0.29, which is 19.4% lower than that of pure PVC film, providing a new way to improve the surface charge density and the durability of triboelectric materials.

A Multifunctional and Highly Flexible Triboelectric Nanogenerator Based on MXene-enabled Porous Film Integrated with Laser-Induced Graphene Electrode

Abstract:The ambient dissipated energy such as the vast scale of mechanical energy in the agricultural system (e.g., leaf swing energy) and the writing motion existing extensively in our daily life are underutilized. Herein, to address these issues and overcome the limitations of conventional batteries, we fabricated a highly flexible and effective triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) based on MXene and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) composite (PDMS/MXene) film and laser-induced graphene (LIG) electrode. The introduction of conductive and electronegative MXene into PDMS to fabricate porous film, not only enhances the electrical conductivity but also increases the triboelectronegativity. As a result, the output performance is significantly improved, 7-fold greater than the pure flat PDMS-based TENG. The developed TENG with excellent performance, considerable adhesion, and outstanding flexibility was successfully applied for harvesting leaf swing energy and being used as a writing board to collect writing energy. Furthermore, we developed a MXene-based TENG array acting as a self-powered sensor for handwriting recognition. In this regard, MXene-enabled TENG possesses a great promising in harvesting mechanical energy from the agricultural field (e.g., leaf swing energy) and human activities (e.g., writing), moreover, it can further be applied in writing or tactile sensing for pad, robotics, and man-machine interaction field.

Abstract:The development of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) technology which can directly convert ambient mechanical energy into electric energy may affect areas from green energy harvesting to emerging wearing electronics. And, the material of triboelectric layer is critical to the mechanical robustness and electrical output characteristics of the TENGs. Herein, a MXene enhanced electret polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) film with a high mechanical property and surface charge density is developed. The MXene/PTFE composite film was synthesized by spraying and annealing treatment. With the doping of MXene, the crystallinity of composite film could be tuned, leading to an enhancement in the tensile property of 450% and reducing the wear volume about 80% in the friction test. Furthermore, the as-fabricated TENG with this composite film outputs 397 V of open-circuit voltage, 21 µA of short-circuit current, and 232 nC of transfer charge quantity, which are 4, 6, and 6 times higher than that of the TENG made by pure PTFE film, respectively. Therefore, this work provides a creative strategy to simultaneously improve the mechanical property and electrical performance of the TENGs, which have great potential in improving device stability under a complex mechanical environment.

High-Performance Yet Sustainable Triboelectric Nanogenerator Based on Sulfur-Rich Polymer Composite with MXene Segregated Structure

Abstract:State-of-the-art triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) typically employ fluoropolymers, highly negative chargeable materials in triboelectric series. However, many researchers nowadays are concerned about environmental pollution caused by poly-and per-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) due to their critical immunotoxicity as fluoropolymers are likely to release PFAS into the ecosystem during their life cycle. Herein, a sulfur-rich polymer (SRP)/MXene composite, offering high-performance yet sustainable TENG is developed. Value-addition of sulfur into SRP-based TENG has huge advantages since sulfur is abundant waste from petroleum refining and possesses the highest electron affinity (-200 kJ mol-1) among polymerizable atoms. MXene segregated structure is introduced into SRP to achieve homogeneous distribution without electrical percolation by utilizing below 0.5 wt% of MXene, resulting in a significantly enhanced dielectric constant without a drastic increase of dielectric loss. Due to homogeneous MXene distribution, SRP/MXene composite-based TENG demonstrates 2.9 times and 19.5 times enhances peak voltage and peak current compared to previous SRP-based TENGs. Additionally, it exhibits reusability without critical reduction of modulus and TENG performance due to dynamically exchangeable disulfide bonds. Finally, after the corona discharging and scaling-up process to a 4-inch wafer size, SRP/MXene composite-based TENG exhibits an 8.4 times improvement in peak power density, reaching 3.80 W m-2 compared to previous SRP-based TENGs.

Abstract:To meet the growing demand for flexible, self-powered, and portable electronic devices—vital for advancing soft robots, electronic skins, and energy-harvesting technologies—we've refined our approach to creating polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) modulating polyethylene glycol (PEG) to facilitate cation movement along polymer chains, significantly boosting the hydrogel's performance in triboelectric nanogenerators (PPh TENG), which is further enhanced by adding with layered Ti 3 C 2 nanosheets, serving as ionic conductors. These nanosheets introduce an efficient electrostatic mechanism known as the streaming vibration potential (SVP), significantly augmenting the device's functionality. Moreover, we used 3-chloropropyltrimethoxysilane (CPTMS) and 1H, 1H, 2H, 2H-perfluorooctyltriethoxysilane (FOTS) to modify the surface of MXene nanosheets to fabricate Cl-MXene and F-MXene hydrogel TENGs, as named by Cl-MPPh and F-MPPh TENGs, respectively. The SVP effect is enhanced by these modified MXene nanosheets in the hydrogel, which is more substantial than unmodified MXene nanosheets. This is attributed to the higher charge density in the electric double layer formed between the MXene nanosheets and water. The Cl-MPPh and F-MPPh TENGs demonstrate open-circuit voltages of 190 V and 212 V, respectively. Our theoretical calculations show a marked increase in the distribution of electric potential. This increase occurs on both sides of the MXene nanosheets as water molecules move through them. The F-MPPh TENG exhibits exceptional sensitivity to mechanical stimuli, which holds promising potential for integration into motion sensors designed to monitor human body movements, including the bending of elbows and wrists.
