Abstract:Extensive evidence has shown that air pollution increases the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) admissions. We aimed to explore the short‐term effect of air pollution on CVD admissions in Lanzhou residents and their lag effects. Meteorological data, air pollution data, and a total of 309,561 daily hospitalizations for CVD among urban residents in Lanzhou were collected from 2013 to 2020. Distributed lag non‐linear model was used to analyze the relationship between air pollutants and CVD admissions, stratified by gender, age, and season. PM2.5, NO2, and CO have the strongest harmful effects at lag03, while SO2 at lag3. The relative risks of CVD admissions were 1.0013(95% CI: 1.0003, 1.0023), 1.0032(95% CI: 1.0008, 1.0056), and 1.0040(95% CI: 1.0024, 1.0057) when PM2.5, SO2, and NO2 concentrations were increased by 10 μg/m3, respectively. Each 1 mg/m3 increase in CO concentration was associated with a relative risk of cardiovascular hospitalization of risk was 1.0909(95% CI: 1.0367, 1.1479). We observed a relative risk of 0.9981(95% CI: 0.9972, 0.9991) for each 10 μg/m3 increase in O3 for CVD admissions at lag06. We found a significant lag effects of air pollutants on CVD admissions. NO2 and CO pose a greater risk of hospitalization for women, while PM2.5 and SO2 have a greater impact on men. PM2.5, NO2, and CO have a greater impact on CVD admissions in individuals aged <65 years, whereas SO2 affects those aged ≥65 years. Our research indicates a possible short‐term impact of air pollution on CVD. Local public health and environmental policies should take these preliminary findings into account.

Abstract:Background Lanzhou is the largest heavy industrial city in northwest China and it is a typical geographical valley-like city. However, there are few studies on the relationship between air pollutants and COPD, and their respective sample sizes are small, resulting in inconsistent results. The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of air pollutants on COPD hospitalizations in Lanzhou, China. Methods An ecological time series study with distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM) was used for analysis. Daily COPD hospitalization data in Lanzhou from 1 January 2015 to 31 December 2019 were collected from 25 hospitals, as well as air pollutant data and meteorological data. Results A total of 18,275 COPD hospitalizations were enrolled. For 10 μg/m 3 increase in PM 2.5 , PM 10 , SO 2 , NO 2 , and 1 mg/m 3 increase in CO at lag 07 day, the RR95%CI of COPD hospitalizations were 1.048 (1.030, 1.067), 1.008 (1.004, 1.013), 1.091 (1.048, 1.135), 1.043 (1.018, 1.068), and 1.160 (1.084, 1.242), respectively. The exposure–response curves between air pollutants (except O3-8h) and COPD hospitalizations were approximately linear with no thresholds. Female, and the harmful effect of PM on aged <65 years, the effect of gaseous pollutant on those aged ≥65 years, were stronger, particularly in the cold season. Exposure to air pollutants (except O 3-8h ) might increase the risk of COPD hospitalizations. O 3-8h has a weak and unstable effect on COPD. Conclusion Exposure to air pollutants (except O 3-8h ) increases the risk of COPD hospitalizations. O 3-8h has a weak and unstable effect on COPD hospital admissions. The harmful effect of gaseous pollutants (except O 3-8h ) on COPD-hospitalized patients was stronger than that of PM.

Abstract:To investigate correlations between environmental and meteorological factors and frequency of presentation for coronary heart disease (CHD) in Beijing. Daily measurements of levels of six atmospheric pollutants were made, data relating to meteorological conditions collected, and CHD-related outpatient visits recorded from January 2015 to December 2019 in Beijing. A time-series analysis was made, using a generalized additive model with Poisson distribution, and R 3.6.3 software was used to estimate relationships among levels of atmospheric pollutants, ambient temperature, and visits occasioned by CHD. Results were controlled for time-dependent trend, other weather variables, day of the week, and holiday effects. Lag-response curves were plotted for specific and incremental cumulative effects of relative risk (RR). The aim was to correlate meteorological-environmental factors and the daily number of CHD-related hospital visits and to quantify the degree of correlation to identify any pathological associations. Response diagrams and three-dimensional diagrams of predicted exposure lag effects were constructed in order to evaluate relationships among the parameters of air pollution, temperature, and daily CHD visits. The fitted model was employed to predict the lag RR and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) for specific and incremental cumulative effects of random air pollutants at random concentrations. This model may then be used to predict effects on the outcome variable at any concentration of any defined pollutant, giving flexibility for public health purposes. The overall lag-response RR curves for the specific cumulative effects of the pollutants, particulate matter (PM)2.5, PM10, SO 2 , CO, and NO 2 , were statistically significant and for PM2.5, PM10, CO, and NO 2 , the overall lag-response RR curves for the incremental cumulative effect were statistically significant. When PM2.5, PM10, SO 2 , CO, and NO 2 concentrations were above threshold values and the temperature was below 45 °F (reference value 70 °F), the number of CHD-related hospital visits increased with a time lag effect. The outpatient volume of CHD was predicted by the model to guide the flexible distribution of medical resources. Elevated PM2.5, PM10, SO 2 , CO, and NO 2 concentrations in the atmosphere combined and low ambient temperature increased the risk of CHD with a time lag effect.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the association between particulate matter (PM) and daily hospital visits of coronary heart diseases in Ningbo. Methods: Daily data of hospital visits from January 2014 to June 2015 (516 days in total) were obtained from the Yinzhou Health Information System in Ningbo. Daily air pollution data for PM and meteorological data were collected from the database of Ningbo Environmental Monitoring Center and Ningbo Meteorological Bureau. Time-series analysis by quasi-Poisson generalized additive model was used to examine the association between air pollution and hospital visits for coronary heart diseases by adjustment of long-term trends, seasonal patterns and meteorological variables (temperature, humidity), and day of week. Results: An increase of an IQR of PM2.5 accounted for 1.98% (95%CI:-0.59%-4.63%) increase of hospital visits for coronary heart diseases. The associations between PM2.5 and hospital visits for coronary heart diseases among female and the elderly (≥75 years) were stronger (ER=2.70%,95% CI:0.01%-5.47%; ER=3.35%, 95% CI: 0.12%-6.69%). The effects of PM2.5~10 attenuated after adjustment for PM2.5.Conclusion: PM2.5 had short-term effects on daily hospital visits for coronary heart diseases in Ningbo, and such association was stronger among female and the elderly.

Abstract:Until now, evidence for acute effects of ambient air pollution exposure on hospital admissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in the semi-arid Loess Plateau is scarce. We aimed to examine the association between short-term ambient air pollution and daily COPD admissions in Dingxi, China. Daily COPD hospital admissions data during 2018–2020 were acquired from all the tertiary and secondary hospitals in Dingxi. Air pollution and meteorological data over the same periods were also collected. A Poisson generalized additive models (GAM), combined with a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM), were employed to evaluate the association between ambient air pollution and hospital admission among patients with COPD. Stratified analyses by gender, age, and season were also performed. Our results showed that PM 2.5 , PM 10 , NO 2 , CO, and O 3 8 h were associated with COPD-related hospitalizations, and no significant influence of SO 2 was found on COPD hospital admission. When the concentration of PM 2.5 (lag07), PM 10 (lag07), NO 2 (lag03), and CO (lag07) increased by 10 μg/m 3 , the daily number of COPD admissions increased by 11.55% (95%CI, 6.35%, 17.01%), 2.50% (95%CI, 1.04%, 3.99%), 7.17% (95%CI, 0.96%, 13.78%), and 0.46% (95%CI, 0.07%, 0.99%), respectively. Moreover, the associations differed by individual characteristics; the elderly (≥ 65 years) and males were highly susceptible. The effects of PM 2.5 , PM 10 , NO 2 , and CO were more obvious in the cold season than in the warm season. This study indicates that exposure to PM 2.5 , PM 10 , NO 2 , and CO is associated with COPD hospital admissions.

Abstract:This study explored the short-term effects of air pollutants (PM 2.5 , PM 10 , SO 2 , NO 2 , O 3 8h, and CO) on pneumonia-related hospital admissions in Lanzhou (an ex-heavily polluted city in Northwestern China). A time-series design, with a distributed lag non-linear model (DLNM), was used for statistical analysis. Daily pneumonia hospital admissions data in Lanzhou from January 1, 2014 to December 31, 2019 were collected, in addition to air pollutant and meteorological data. We used DLNM to estimate relative risk (RR), and a 95% confidence interval (CI) of pneumonia hospital admissions was associated with a 10 μg/m 3 rise in exposure to air pollutants (per 1 mg/m 3 rise in CO). Stratification analysis was also performed according to gender (male and female), age (0–14 years, 15–64 years and ≥ 65 years old), and season (warm season and cold season). A total of 20,071 pneumonia hospital admissions were enrolled for analysis. Pneumonia hospital admissions risk were 1.044 (1.029, 1.060), 1.009 (1.005, 1.013), 1.086 (1.053, 1.121), 1.073 (1.052, 1.093), and 1.157 (1.094, 1.223), respectively, corresponding to a 10 μg/m 3 rise in exposure to PM 2.5 , PM 10 , SO 2 , NO 2 , a 1 mg/m 3 rise in exposure to CO. Every 10 μg/m 3 increase in O 3 8h was associated with decrease of pneumonia hospital admissions, the RR(95%CI) was 0.949 (0.935, 0.962). The adverse effects for gaseous pollutants (except O 3 8h) on pneumonia hospital admissions were stronger than particulate matter. Six exposure–response curves between air pollutants and pneumonia hospital admissions were approximately linear without thresholds. Female and children aged 0–14 years were more sensitive to the effects of air pollutants, particularly in the cold season. Exposure to air pollutants (except O 3 8h) might be associated with increased risk of pneumonia hospital admissions. The association remained significant after adjusting for other environmental factors.
Short-term effects of particulate matter exposure on emergency room visits for cardiovascular disease in Lanzhou, China: a time series analysis

Abstract:Cardiovascular disease (CVD) has been the leading cause of death in China. Identifying the relationship between particulate matter (PM) and CVD in China is a significant challenge. In this study, daily CVD emergency room visit, environmental monitoring, and weather data from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2018, in Lanzhou were collected. Generalized additive models (GAMs) were constructed to estimate the short-term effects of daily PM2.5, PMC, and PM10 concentrations on CVD emergency room visits with different lag structures after controlling for the influence of meteorological elements and gaseous pollutants. Stratified analyses were conducted according to age (≥ 65 years and < 65 years), sex (male and female), cold season (from November to April), and warm season (from May to October). The results showed that each 10 μg/m3 increase in PM2.5 was associated with a 1.93% (95% CI 0.12-3.78%) increase in CVD emergency room visits at lag03, and no single lag model was statistically significant. The excess relative risks (ERRs) of PM10 and PMC were not statistically significant at any lag pattern. The exposure-response curves demonstrated a nonlinear upward trend for these three PM pollutants. When adjusting for other gaseous pollutants, such as NO2, SO2, CO, and O3, in the two-pollutant models, the associations between PM10 and PMC and CVD emergency room visits did not change compared with the single-pollutant models. The ERRs of PM2.5 were 1.67% (95% CI 0.03-3.34%) at lag02 after adjustment for NO2 and 1.65% (95% CI 0.02-3.30%) at lag02 after adjustment for SO2. The ERRs of PM2.5 were still statistically significant at lag03 when we adjusted for any one of the gaseous pollutants. Susceptibility to PM2.5 was increased in people aged < 65 years, in males, and in the warm season. The findings are very important for local governments to develop environmental policies and strategies to reduce ambient PM2.5 levels.

Abstract:Previous studies have demonstrated that short-term exposure to ambient air pollution was associated with hospital admissions for cardiovascular diseases, but the evidence of its effects on acute myocardial infarction (AMI) in East Asian countries is limited and inconsistent. We aimed to investigate the association between air pollution and AMI hospitalizations in Chongqing, China. This time-stratified case-crossover study included 872 patients with AMI from three hospitals in Chongqing from January 2015 to December 2016. Exposures were compared between days with AMI (case days) and days without AMI (control days). Spearman's correlation coefficient was applied to explore the correlation between air pollutants and meteorological conditions. Conditional logistic regression was used to assess the associations between air pollution exposure with different lag periods and AMI hospitalizations. Stratification analysis was further implemented by sex, age, and season. Hospitalizations for AMI were signifficantly associated with air pollution. All analyzed air pollutants showed lag-specific at lag 0 day and lag 01 day, whereas a 10 mu g/m(3) increase of average concentrations in PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, and CO was associated with 1.034% (95% CI: 1.003-1.067%), 1.035% (95% CI:1.015-1.056%), 1.231% (95% CI: 1.053-1.438%), 1.062% (95% CI: 1.018-1.107%), and 1.406% (95% CI: 1.059-1.866%) increase in hospitalizations for AMI, respectively. No effect modifications were detected for sex, age, and season. Our findings suggest that short-term exposure to PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, and CO contributes to increase AMI hospitalizations, which have public health implications for primary prevention and emergency health services.

Abstract:Objective: To evaluate the relationship between ambient air pollutants and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in relatively low-polluted areas in China. Methods: Atmospheric pollutants levels and meteorological data were obtained from January 2016 to December 2020. The medical database including daily hospital admissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (ICD10: J44) was derived from the First Affiliated Hospital of Gannan Medical University. The generalized additive model was used to analyze the percentage change with 95% confidence interval in daily hospital admissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease associated with a 10 µg/m3 increase in atmospheric pollutants levels. Results: In total, occurred 4,980 chronic obstructive pulmonary disease hospital admissions (not including emergency department visits) during 2016-2020. The mean concentrations of daily PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NO2, O3, and CO were 37.5 μg/m3, 60.1 μg/m3, 18.7 μg/m3, 23.5 μg/m3, 70.0 μg/m3, and 1.2 mg/m3 in Ganzhou. Each 10 µg/m3 increment of PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and O3 were significantly associated with 2.8% (95%CI: 1.0-4.7), 1.3% (95%CI: 0.3-2.4), 2.8% (95%CI: 0.4-5.4), and 1.5% (95%CI: 0.2-2.7) elevation in daily chronic obstructive pulmonary disease hospital admissions. The estimates of delayed effects of PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and O3 were observed at lag6, lag6, lag8, lag1, respectively. The health effects of particulate pollutants (PM2.5 and PM10) may be independent of other pollutants. The adverse effects of air pollutants were more evident in the warm season (May-Oct) than in the cold season (Nov-Apr). Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that elevated concentrations of atmospheric pollutant (PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and O3), especially particulate pollutants, can be associated with increased daily count of hospital admissions for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease , which may promote further understanding of the potential hazards of relatively low levels of air pollution on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and other respiratory disorders.
Effects of Air Pollution on Hospital Visits for Pneumonia in Children: a Two-Year Analysis from China

Abstract:Although the effect of air pollution on respiratory health has been identified, few studies can be available to evaluate the association of air pollution with hospital visits for children’s pneumonia in China. To explore whether high concentrations of air pollutants (including PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and SO2) are related to hospital visits for pneumonia in children, we conducted a population-based time-series study in Ningbo, China, from January 1st, 2014 to November 1st, 2015. We used a generalized additive Poisson regression model to calculate risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals for the associations of air pollutants and hospital visits for pneumonia in children and found that these four pollutants were associated with the increased hospital visits for pneumonia in children (1.3% for PM2.5, 1.0% for PM10, 2.9% for NO2, 5.0% for SO2 per 10-μg/m3 increase in PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and SO2, respectively). Stronger associations were observed in the cold seasons and among children under 5 years.

Abstract:Ambient particulate matter is one of the main risk factors of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) in developing countries. However, the studies were scant in China concerning the health effects of the fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ; particulate matter ≤ 2.5 μm in diameter) on hospital visits for COPD. We applied a generalized additive model (GAM) to calculate relative risks (RRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the associations between hospital visits for COPD and an interquartile range (24.50 μg/m 3 ) increment of ambient PM 2.5 concentrations in Yinzhou District between 2016 and 2018. The ambient PM 2.5 concentration was positively associated with hospital visits for COPD at a distributed lag of 0–7 days (RR = 1.073, 95% CI, 1.016, 1.133). In the stratified analysis, we found that the association between ambient PM 2.5 and COPD was stronger during the warm season (April to September) than that during the cold season (October to March), but we did not observe statistically significant differences in age groups (< 60 years and ≥ 60 years) or gender groups (male and female) related to the effects of PM 2.5 . The associations between ambient PM 2.5 and COPD became partially attenuated after the adjustment for gaseous pollutants in subgroups. Our findings could provide evidence that regulations for controlling both PM 2.5 and gaseous pollutants should be implemented to protect the overall population.
Air Pollution and Hospital Visits for Acute Upper and Lower Respiratory Infections among Children in Ningbo, China: A Time-Series Analysis

Abstract:Acute upper and lower respiratory infections are main causes of mortality and morbidity in children. Air pollution has been recognized as an important contributor to development and exacerbation of respiratory infections. However, few studies are available in China. In this study, we investigated the short-term effect of air pollution on hospital visits for acute upper and lower respiratory infections among children under 15 years in Ningbo, China. Poisson generalized models were used to estimate the associations between air pollution and hospital visits for acute upper and lower respiratory infections adjusted for temporal, seasonal, and meteorological effects. We found that four pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, NO2, and SO2) were significantly associated with hospital visits for acute upper and lower respiratory infections. The effect estimates for acute upper respiratory infections tended to be higher (PM2.5 ER = 3.46, 95% CI 2.18, 4.76; PM10 ER = 2.81, 95% CI 1.93, 3.69; NO2 ER = 11.27, 95% CI 8.70, 13.89; SO2 ER = 15.17, 95% CI 11.29, 19.19). Significant associations for gaseous pollutants (NO2 and SO2) were observed after adjustment for particular matter. Stronger associations were observed among older children and in the cold period. Our study suggested that short-term exposure to outdoor air pollution was associated with hospital visits for acute upper and lower respiratory infections in Ningbo.

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the univariate and bivariate effects of ambient temperature and air pollutants on 57,251 inpatients with AECOPD (Acute Exacerbation of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) in Ganzhou from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2019. We categorized the daily mean temperature and air pollutant variables based on the exposure–response curve of the Distributed Lag Non-Linear Model. The Relative Excess Risk due to Interaction (RERI) with 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) between daily mean temperature (Tmean) and air pollutants including NO 2 , PM 2.5 , and PM 10 were − 0.428 (95% CI − 0.637, − 0.218), -− 0.227 (95% CI − 0.293, − 0.161), and − 0.119 (95% CI − 0.159, − 0.079). Further stratification analysis showed the relative risk (RR) (95% CI) of high NO 2 (> 33 μg/m 3 ) at low Tmean (≤ 28 °C) was 1.119 (95% CI 1.096, 1.142). Low temperatures with high PM 10 in men and high PM 2.5 in women were associated with a higher risk of AECOPD hospitalization. The results indicate a higher risk of hospitalization for AECOPD when there is with high concentrations of air pollution at low temperatures.

Abstract:Studies on the effects of short-term air pollution exposure on hospitalization for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are relatively scarce in developing regions. The time-series study was used to explore the acute effects of air pollutants on hospitalization for T2DM in Lanzhou, China. A distribution lag nonlinear model based on the generalized additive model was used to analyze the hospitalization impact of air pollution on T2DM. Stratified analysis by gender, age and season was obtained. The results were indicated as the relative risk ( RR ) with 95% confidence interval (CI) for single-day lags (from lag0 to lag7) and cumulative lag days (from lag0-1 to lag0-7). The strongest correlations (RR, 95% CI) of hospitalization for T2DM and PM 10 (RR = 1.003, 95% CI 1.000, 1.001) at lag7 and NO 2 (RR = 1.022, 95% CI 1.000, 1.045) at lag0-4 were observed for an increase of 10 μg/m 3 in the concentrations and CO (RR = 1.091, 95% CI 1.017, 1.170) at lag0-4 for an increase of 1 mg/m 3 in the concentration. The hazardous impacts of PM 10 , NO 2 and CO were greater for females, people aged ≥ 65 years and in the cold season. However, there was no significant association between PM 2.5 , SO 2 and O 3 8h and the number of hospitalizations for T2DM.

Abstract:In this study, we estimated the short-term effects of ambient air pollution on respiratory disease hospitalization in Taiyuan, China. Daily data of respiratory disease hospitalization, daily concentration of ambient air pollutants and meteorological factors from 1 October 2014 to 30 September 2017 in Taiyuan were included in our study. We conducted a time-series study design and applied a generalized additive model to evaluate the association between every 10-μg/m3 increment of air pollutants and percent increase of respiratory disease hospitalization. A total of 127,565 respiratory disease hospitalization cases were included in this study during the present period. In single-pollutant models, the effect values in multi-day lags were greater than those in single-day lags. PM2.5 at lag02 days, SO2 at lag03 days, PM10 and NO2 at lag05 days were observed to be strongly and significantly associated with respiratory disease hospitalization. No significant association was found between O3 and respiratory disease hospitalization. SO2 and NO2 were still significantly associated with hospitalization after adjusting for PM2.5 or PM10 into two-pollutant models. Females and younger population for respiratory disease were more vulnerable to air pollution than males and older groups. Therefore, some effective measures should be taken to strengthen the management of the ambient air pollutants, especially SO2 and NO2, and to enhance the protection of the high-risk population from air pollutants, thereby reducing the burden of respiratory disease caused by ambient air pollution.

Abstract:Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the overall impact of PM2.5, PM10, NO2, SO2, CO, and O3 on the admission of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. Methods: We collected data on cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease admissions from two hospitals in Shenyang Liaoning, China from Jan 2014 to Dec 2017, as well as daily measurements of six pollutants at 11 sites in Shenyang. The generalized additive model was used to assess the association between daily contaminants and admission to cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. Results: The single-contamination model showed a significant correlation between NO2, O3, PM10 and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases at lag0 day. Air pollutants had lag effects on different gender groups. Excess relative risks (ERs) associated with a 10 μg/m3 increase were 1.522(1.057, 1.988) on lag02 for NO2, 0.547% (0.367%, 0.728%), 0.133% (0.061%, 0.205%) on lag3 for O3 and PM10. The dual pollutant model showed that the effects of NO2, O3, and PM10 after adjusting the influence of other pollutants were still statistically significant. Conclusion: Short-term exposure to ambient air pollution (NO2, O3, and PM10) may be associated with an increased risk of daily cardiovascular and cerebrovascular admission, which may provide reliable evidence for further understanding of the potential adverse effects of air pollution on cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases.

Ambient air pollution and daily hospital admissions for respiratory system-related diseases in a heavy polluted city in Northeast China

Abstract:Respiratory disease admission has been increasing in the recent 5 years due to heavy air pollutions and bad weather conditions in China. We investigated the short-term association of ambient air pollution with daily counts of hospital admissions due to respiratory infection diseases with stratified analysis by age (0-18, 19-65, and > 65 years old), gender (male, female), season (spring, summer, autumn, winter), and disease type (lung infections, asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive disease), URI (upper respiratory infections)) in heavy polluted city of Shenyang in China. Daily ambient air pollution concentrations, weather conditions, and hospital admission counts for 53 months (from November 1, 2013 to March 25, 2018) were extracted from related authorities in electronic databases. Associations between outdoor air pollution levels and hospital admissions were estimated for time lags of 0-7 days using quasi-Poisson additive regression models, adjusted for meteorological variables, holidays, day of week, and season, as well as eliminating autocorrelations. Single pollutant analysis results showed lung infection diseases were related to all pollutant concentration change with no lag effects. After adjusting for other pollutants and confounding factors, we found NO2 was associated with daily admissions of lung infections (ER = 6.75%, 95% CI 1.24, 12.55), asthma (ER = 20.36%, 95% CI 4.26, 38.95; lag day 5, ER = 18.48%, 95% CI 2.83, 36.51), and COPD (ER = 13.27%, 95% CI 0.46, 27.71); CO was associated with lung infections and asthma with lag effects on lag days 1 and 4; and PM2.5 was associated with COPD admissions on lag day 6. Respiratory hospital admissions in female over 65 years old and autumn were more associated with increased air pollutant levels. Our study results might add more detail evidences for relationship studies between air pollution exposure and respiratory diseases and contribute to the precise respiratory disease prevention and air pollution control strategies.

Abstract:There is growing interest in the association between ambient air pollution and acute myocardial infarction (AMI). The objective of this study was to explore the association in 14 Chinese cities using a time-stratified case-crossover design. We identified 80,787 hospital admissions for AMI between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2015 from electronic hospitalization summary reports. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate the percent changes with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) in AMI admissions in relation to an interquartile range increase in ambient air pollutant concentrations. All analyzed air pollutants, with the exception of ozone, were positively associated with daily AMI admissions on lag2 and lag3 days. An interquartile range increase in particulate matter <10 mu m in aerodynamic diameter, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, and carbon monoxide concentrations on lag2 day was significantly associated with a 0.8% (95% CI 0.1%, 1.6%), 2.0% (95% CI 1.2%, 2.9%), 2.2% (95% CI 1.4%, 3.1%), and 1.1% (95% CI 0.4%, 1.8%) increase in AMI admissions,. respectively. We also observed a significant association in relation to ozone on lag4 day (percent change: 1.3%; 95% CI 0.2%, 2.4%). Subgroup analyses indicated no effect modification of risk by age (>= 65 years and <65 years) or gender. In conclusion, this is the first multicity study in China, or even in other developing countries, to report the short-term effects of air pollution on AMI morbidity. Our findings contribute to the limited scientific data on the effects of ambient air pollution on AMI in developing countries. (C) 2017 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
Short-term association between air pollution and daily genitourinary disorder admissions in Lanzhou, China

Abstract:The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between short-term exposure to ambient air pollution and the number of daily hospital admissions for genitourinary disorders in Lanzhou. Hospital admission data and air pollutants, including PM 2.5 , PM 10 , SO 2 , NO 2 , O 3 8h and CO, were obtained from the period 2013 to 2020. A generalized additive model (GAM) combined with distribution lag nonlinear model (DLNM) based on quasi-Poisson distribution was used by the controlling for trends, weather, weekdays and holidays. Short-term exposure to PM 2.5 , NO 2 and CO increased the risk of genitourinary disorder admissions with RR of 1.0096 (95% CI 1.0002–1.0190), 1.0255 (95% CI 1.0123–1.0389) and 1.0686 (95% CI 1.0083–1.1326), respectively. PM 10 , O 3 8h and SO 2 have no significant effect on genitourinary disorders. PM 2.5 and NO 2 are more strongly correlated in female and ≥ 65 years patients. CO is more strongly correlated in male and < 65 years patients. PM 2.5 , NO 2 and CO are risk factors for genitourinary morbidity, and public health interventions should be strengthened to protect vulnerable populations.
