Abstract:Writing specifications for computer programs is not easy since one has to take into account the disparate conceptual worlds of the application domain and of software development. To bridge this conceptual gap we propose controlled natural language as a declarative and application-specific specification language. Controlled natural language is a subset of natural language that can be accurately and efficiently processed by a computer, but is expressive enough to allow natural usage by non-specialists. Specifications in controlled natural language are automatically translated into Prolog clauses, hence become formal and executable. The translation uses a definite clause grammar (DCG) enhanced by feature structures. Inter-text references of the specification, e.g. anaphora, are resolved with the help of discourse representation theory (DRT). The generated Prolog clauses are added to a knowledge base. We have implemented a prototypical specification system that successfully processes the specification of a simple automated teller machine.

Abstract:This paper puts forward a kind of novel methodology for software system development, from the point of view of the problem existed in software development -- the gap between the requirement specification level and the program implementation level. We attempt to begin from the specification level of software development to touch the process of high-level specification construction profoundly. We propose a specification language to support multiple semantic dimensions and based on which build a unified functional model of software system in a specific domain. On the bases of these, we apply transformation and refinement methods to the model and transit it from the specification level to the implementation level. We expect such a process can change the current software producing procedure in nature. We also put this methodology into the application of the software development in real-time serving domain we focus on, which turns out to be encouraging.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose an event specification language for event-based collaboration support software architecture, which incorporates some basic concepts, four event operators and four event-occurrence operators to conveniently allow complex event descriptions. The semantics of the language is also studied In the event specification language, we distinguish between event and event occurrence, identify primitive events, and introduce a small number of event operators for constructing composite (or complex) events. The novel aspect of our work lies in supporting a rich set of events and event expressions.

Abstract:Communication protocols are central to engineering decentralized multiagent systems. Modern protocol languages are typically formal and address aspects of decentralization, such as asynchrony. However, modern languages differ in important ways in their basic abstractions and operational assumptions. This diversity makes a comparative evaluation of protocol languages a challenging task. We contribute a rich evaluation of modern protocol languages based on diverse approaches. Among the selected languages, Scribble is based on session types; Trace-C and Trace-F on trace expressions; HAPN on hierarchical state machines, and BSPL on information causality. Our contribution is four-fold. One, we contribute important criteria for evaluating protocol languages. Two, for each criterion, we compare the languages on the basis of whether they are able to specify elementary protocols that go to the heart of the criterion. Three, for each language, we map our findings to a canonical architecture style for multiagent systems, highlighting where the languages depart from the architecture. Four, we identify a few design principles for protocol languages as guidance for future research.

Abstract:This paper proposes a knowledge-based specification technique (KST) for protocol development. This technique semi-automatically translates a protocol described in an informal description (natural languages or graphs) into one described in formal specifications (Estelle and SDL). The translation processes are supported by knowledge stored in the knowledge base. This paper discusses the concept, the specification control mechanism of KST and the rules and algorithms for production of FSM's which is the basis of Estelle and SDL.

Abstract:Context and motivation: Usage of Formal Specification languages is scarce in web application development as compared to safety critical/hardware systems. Question/problem: An apt formal specification language should provide the following features: Firstly, it should have well-defined semantics, so that specifications written in it can not be inherently ambiguous. Secondly, it should have tool support for automatic detection of specification bugs. Additionally, for domains like web development, it is important that specification formalisms build over familiar notations, as the benefits of learning highly mathematical notations in such domains are perceived to be low. Principal ideas/results: This work presents a State Based Language inspired by Statecharts called StaBL for specification of web applications, and how StaBL can be used for writing such specifications. We also present modifications to the language w.r.t Statechart which facilitate writing modular and scalable specification. Contribution: In particular, we present the feature of locally scoped variables with inter-state data-flow. We summarise our experience of developing specifications with StaBL, which shows that StaBL specifications, on the one hand, are able to capture most essential elements of the functional aspects of a web application while foregoing much of the verbosity of a regular programming language.

Abstract:Unifying theories distil common features of programming languages and design methods by means of algebraic operators and their laws. Several practical concerns --- e.g., improvement of a program, conformance of code with design, correctness with respect to specified requirements --- are subsumed by the beautiful notion that programs and designs are special forms of specification and their relationships are instances of logical implication between specifications. Mathematical development of this idea has been fruitful but limited to an impoverished notion of specification: trace properties. Some mathematically precise properties of programs, dubbed hyperproperties, refer to traces collectively. For example, confidentiality involves knowledge of possible traces. This article reports on both obvious and surprising results about lifting algebras of programming to hyperproperties, especially in connection with loops, and suggests directions for further research. The technical results are: a compositional semantics, at the hyper level, of imperative programs with loops, and proof that this semantics coincides with the direct image of a standard semantics, for subset closed hyperproperties.

Abstract:We identify three problems with current techniques for implementing protocols among threads, which complicate and impair the scalability of multicore software development: implementing synchronization, implementing coordination, and modularizing protocols. To mend these deficiencies, we argue for the use of domain-specific languages (DSL) based on existing models of concurrency. To demonstrate the feasibility of this proposal, we explain how to use the model of concurrency Reo as a high-level protocol DSL, which offers appropriate abstractions and a natural separation of protocols and computations. We describe a Reo-to-Java compiler and illustrate its use through examples.

Abstract:One relevant aspect in the development of the Semantic Web framework is the achievement of a real inter-agents communication capability at the semantic level. The agents should be able to communicate and understand each other using standard communication protocols freely, that is, without needing a laborious a priori preparation, before the communication takes place. For that setting we present in this paper a proposal that promotes to describe standard communication protocols using Semantic Web technology (specifically, OWL-DL and SWRL). Those protocols are constituted by communication acts. In our proposal those communication acts are described as terms that belong to a communication acts ontology, that we have developed, called CommOnt. The intended semantics associated to the communication acts in the ontology is expressed through social commitments that are formalized as fluents in the Event Calculus. In summary, OWL-DL reasoners and rule engines help in our proposal for reasoning about protocols. We define some comparison relationships (dealing with notions of equivalence and specialization) between protocols used by agents from different systems.

Abstract:One relevant aspect in the development of the Semantic Web framework is the achievement of a real inter-agents communication capability at the semantic level. Agents should be able to communicate with each other freely using different communication protocols, constituted by communication acts. For that scenario, we introduce in this paper an efficient mechanism presenting the following main features: - It promotes the description of the communication acts of protocols as classes that belong to a communication acts ontology, and associates to those acts a social commitment semantics formalized through predicates in the Event Calculus. - It is sustained on the idea that different protocols can be compared semantically by looking to the set of fluents associated to each branch of the protocols. Those sets are generated using Semantic Web technology rules. - It discovers the following types of protocol relationships: equivalence, specialization, restriction, prefix, suffix, infix and complement_to_infix.

Abstract:Abstract We show how a bi-directional grammar can be used to specify and verbalise answer set programs in controlled natural language. We start from a program specification in controlled natural language and translate this specification automatically into an executable answer set program. The resulting answer set program can be modified following certain naming conventions and the revised version of the program can then be verbalised in the same subset of natural language that was used as specification language. The bi-directional grammar is parametrised for processing and generation, deals with referring expressions, and exploits symmetries in the data structure of the grammar rules whenever these grammar rules need to be duplicated. We demonstrate that verbalisation requires sentence planning in order to aggregate similar structures with the aim to improve the readability of the generated specification. Without modifications, the generated specification is always semantically equivalent to the original one; our bi-directional grammar is the first one that allows for semantic round-tripping in the context of controlled natural language processing.

Abstract:In the programming paradigm proposed in the series, assignments have become operations on physical objects and programs have turned out to be expressions of operations on physical objects (O-expressions). Safety properties and progress properties of 0-expressions are formally defined, and formal specifications based on these properties are proposed with examples. An 0-expression with an explicit goal is said to be a stand-alone 0-expression (saloe for short) and a complete program may consist of more than one saloe. A theorem on how to deduce properties of a program from formal specifications of its constituent saloe is given. Many examples can be found for exploring formal definitions of program properties.

Abstract:Data-flow-oriented formal specification languages, such as SOFL, bridge formal methods to industrial applications, allowing software developers to effectively use formal methods in developing practical software systems. In this paper, we introduce an extension to SOFL specification language for specifying concurrent software systems. SOFL is designed by integrating different notations and techniques on the basis that they are all needed to work together effectively in a coherent manner for specification constructions and verifications. We mainly introduce two notions, region and channel, to the SOFL language so that concurrency can be specified both graphically and formally, thus making SOFL specifications both intuitive and precise.

Abstract:Various vulnerabilities have been found in message parsers of protocol implementations in the past. Even highly sensitive software components like TLS libraries are affected regularly. Resulting issues range from denial-of-service attacks to the extraction of sensitive information. The complexity of protocols and imprecise specifications in natural language are the core reasons for subtle bugs in implementations, which are hard to find. The lack of precise specifications impedes formal verification. In this paper, we propose a model and a corresponding domain-specific language to formally specify message formats of existing real-world binary protocols. A unique feature of the model is the capability to define invariants, which specify relations and dependencies between message fields. Furthermore, the model allows defining the relation of messages between different protocol layers and thus ensures correct interpretation of payload data. We present a technique to derive verifiable parsers based on the model, generate efficient code for their implementation, and automatically prove the absence of runtime errors. Examples of parser specifications for Ethernet and TLS demonstrate the applicability of our approach.

Abstract:A protocol testing theory is presented based on formal methods.The system under tester, protocol specifications, test requirements and implementation relationships between under tester and tester are specified. The test activity is controlled by the test suite and the test principle is defined by three operations: pass, fail, and inconclusive. Finally, the test result is given by a verdict function. A formal programmable language, which is an input and output labeled transition system (IOTS), is recommended to specify the concept and framework of the protocol testing theory.

Abstract:jq is a widely used tool that provides a programming language to manipulate JSON data. However, the jq language is currently only specified by its implementation, making it difficult to reason about its behaviour. To this end, we provide a formal syntax and denotational semantics for a large subset of the jq language. Our most significant contribution is to provide a new way to interpret updates that allows for more predictable and performant execution.
