Abstract:F OR practical purposes we may consider that endotoxins of gram-negative bacteria are the cause of endotoxic shock. In general, endotoxins are produced by bacteria which form smooth colonies. However, it should be mentioned that small quantities of endotoxin have been found in colonially rough, gram-negative rods and in some gram-positive bacteria. Endotoxins are found in the outer layers of the bacterial cell wall. They are so closely associated with other constituents of this structure that their isolation requires strong chemical treatment.1 Endotoxins are macromolecules which readily form complexes with each other and with other macromolecules. The two major constituents of endotoxins are lipids and polysacchanides. Endotoxins also contain a small percentage of peptides, so we may consider that endotoxins are lipid-polysaccharide-peptide macromolecules. All endotoxins contain phosphorus also. The polysaccharide moiety is composed of a number of different carbohydrates, such as glucose, galactose and mannose, as well as pentoses, heptoses, and hexosamines.2 Also present are di-deoxy hexoses, which are found only in endotoxins. The lipid moiety contains even-numbered saturated and unsaturated fatty acids. The chemical constituents of endotoxins are arranged in three major zones in the macromolecule: the polysaccharide, the lipid-rich, and the amino acid-rich moieties. The backbone of the molecule is polysaccharide, to which are attached amino acids. The fatty acids are also attached to the carbohydrate backbone; these are ester bound to OH groups or amide bound to NH2 groups of the carbohydrate, probably through such compounds as glucosamine.2 The endotoxin molecule is unique in its fatty acid-carbohydrate linkages, which have not been found in any other natural substance.3 Phosphoric acid is found in both the lipid and carbohydrate moieties.

Abstract:The amount of construction and demolition waste is enormous and still in rapid growth especially in the mega-city like Hangzhou, PR China. However, effective management and technical regulations for dealing with the construction waste are still not available, simple landfill is the main disposal method of C&D waste. In order to reduce the consumption of land spaces by simple landfills, this paper explores the possibility of reclaiming landfills into forest land or farmland. After analyzing the concentration and pollution degree of six heavy metals and two pesticides, the C&D waste landfill can fully satisfy the soil application function corresponding to a third-level standard of Soil Environmental Quality Standard (GB15618-1995). Thus, it can be used for forest land and farmland (except planting vegetables).

Abstract:The objective of this research is to develop a methodology for assessing environmental risks arising from the construction and demolition waste (CDW), considering some environmental criteria to identify the most critical locations. A field survey was conducted in seven municipalities in Brazil, which involved obtaining the CDW illegal dumping sites, through direct observation and photographic registration in the municipalities studied, for assessing environmental risks arising from the CDW illegal dumping and to identify areas with the highest risk of impacts according to environmental criteria. Each site was classified according to aspects such as distance between the irregular disposal points and water resources, plant cover, subnormal clusters, mean family income, parks and plazas, and health and education equipment. A total of 1252 irregular dumping sites were registered in the study area, distributed among the seven municipalities analyzed. In all municipalities surveyed, high-risk dumping sites were identified, although they do not represent most of the sites. Based on the application of this methodology in other municipalities, it will be possible to calibrate the score according to the social and environmental characteristics of each region, and it can be consolidated as a standard tool for assessing environmental impacts from the illegal CDW dumping.

Abstract:A survey on household solid waste generation and physical composition was conducted in Hanoi City, the capital of Vietnam. The study sampled 110 households in specific areas with different population density and household scale. Household solid waste was classified into 13 main categories and 25 sub-categories. The results showed that average generation rate of waste in Hanoi City is 0.63 kg per person per day with a slightly higher rate in rural areas than urban ones. The largest proportion was food and garden waste at 78.9% followed by plastic and paper. Plastic waste was segregated into plastic and nylon, and nylon was double that of plastics in household solid waste. Compared to previous studies, this study found a higher portion of organic matter in the waste characterization that could be attributed to the changes in lifestyle patterns associated with COVID-19. This situation provides challenges and opportunities for introducing biomass technology to recover energy.

Abstract:As construction increases through a rise in development in Vietnam, the environmental performance of recycling construction and demolition waste is not well documented. This paper addresses this lack of knowledge, by mapping the current recycling system and estimating recycling performance of a key component in construction and demolition waste in Vietnam, concrete. Primary data were collected directly from six Vietnamese construction enterprises involved in the life cycle of construction and demolition waste management. The results indicated that potential net environmental benefits exist for all impact categories examined if a mechanised plant were considered. Moreover, construction demolition waste may then be used for more permanent applications such as building foundations and in new building materials. The results confirm benefits to technological advancements in concrete recycling in the construction demolition waste sector. Fostering investment and interest in such strategies could be achieved by imposing clear and consistent construction demolition waste classifications, establishing clear lines of responsibility, and coordinating activities amongst key stakeholders to promote the benefits of concrete recycling. These findings consolidate the need of further research in Vietnam and other developing nations, where more detailed life cycle inventory development and stakeholder engagement could help. Then better environmental outcomes through the concrete recycling management may be delivered.

Abstract:The study was conducted to evaluate the management of domestic solid waste in Cai Rang district, Can Tho city. The study conducted sampling of domestic solid waste from 20 households in four wards Le Binh, Hung Phu, Ba Lang, and Tan Phu within 07 days from March 6 to 12, 2023. At the same time, three groups of subjects including 120 households, 3 Environmental Managers, and 3 employees of Urban Environment Joint Stock Company were interviewed to collect information. The result showed that the average domestic solid waste generation coefficient reached 0.28 kg/person/day, and the amount of domestic solid waste generated can reach about 11,027.3 tons by the end of 2023. Of which, up to 91% of the volume of domestic solid waste was recyclable, including 52% of biodegradable organic waste, and 39% of recyclable waste. As for domestic solid waste management, there was still a limitation in classifying waste at source, this rate only fluctuates between 43.4-86.7%. Besides, the rate of households registered for domestic solid waste collection service had a difference between urban and rural areas, fluctuating from 76.7-96.7%. After being collected, domestic solid waste was transported to the Can Tho household waste incineration plant (EB plant). Meanwhile, the remaining amount of domestic solid waste was treated using unsanitary landfill methods, and thrown into rivers, causing environmental pollution, and public health. Although propaganda activities related to domestic solid waste management were carried out in four wards in Cai Rang district, Can Tho city. However, the level of implementation of these activities was not regular. From that, the study identified a number of difficulties in domestic solid waste management, including solid waste that was not completely classified at source, and garbage collection services that were not organized throughout the area. The district lacked specialized waste collection vehicles after classification, and public propaganda, and education work were limited. This research will help local authorities come up with specific solutions to improve the quality of solid waste management in Cai Rang district, Can Tho city.

Abstract:The present study examines the current practices for managing construction and demolition waste (CDW) in two tier-2 cities of Karnataka state: Hubli-Dharwad and Davanagere. The research highlights the quantification, characterization, and effective management strategies for CDW. CDW dumping sites were identified through field visits conducted across all wards of the cities and recorded using a mobile-based app. At each site, data were collected on the types of vehicles dumping CDW, the frequency of dumping, the volume of waste in the vehicles, and the quantity of CDW removed for reuse. The dumping sites were categorized into large, medium, and small based on the area and volume of waste. In total, 130 unauthorised dumping sites were identified in Hubli-Dharwad and 62 in Davanagere. The study estimated that Hubli-Dharwad generates approximately 607 tonnes per day (TPD) of CDW, while Davanagere produces around 287 TPD. The characterization of CDW revealed that in Hubli-Dharwad, CDW consists of 14.4% concrete, 25.5% brick and mortar, 39.1% soil and aggregates, and 20% other materials. In Davanagere, the composition includes 19% concrete, 29% brick and mortar, 38% soil, and 14% other materials. Based on these findings, the study proposes a system for the collection and transportation of CDW and recommends suitable recycling technologies. While the approach outlined in this paper is well-suited for urban local bodies to assess CDW, the data on CDW reuse and recycling is primarily based on informal practices. This makes accurate quantification challenging and subject to variation over time due to a lack of regulatory oversight. Additionally, the study provides only a snapshot of CDW generation and management at a specific point in time, potentially missing seasonal variations or long-term trends in waste handling.

Abstract:Along with the rapid growth in construction industry, quantity of construction and demolition (C&D) waste has increased significantly in recent decades. Demolition waste (DW) is identified as one significant stream of C&D waste and it is vital to obtain reliable information of the waste quantity. However, the data of C&D waste generation in China is still insufficient. In this study, an agent-based model is developed to estimate the total volume of DW and the amount of DW generated at each stage of waste disposal in Shenzhen, China. The findings present the greater capacity of deconstruction method in reduction of DW generation than conventional demolition method. In addition, the change from conventional demolition to deconstruction method could bring about a dramatic difference in the amount of construction material saving. However, the results present that change of attitude towards the demolition method is a slow process, which explains the unsatisfactory performance of demolition waste management (DWM) in Shenzhen. Relying on the attitude change of demolition companies is not enough to improve the performance of DWM. Related stakeholders should pay additional attention on DWM. Furthermore, an optimized management framework with involvement of related stakeholders is developed in this study.

Abstract:With the continuous promotion of urbanization, the generation of construction and demolition waste (CDW) is increasing. The environmental problems and safety hazards caused as a result need to be resolved. In this paper, based on the system dynamics (SD) theory, the modeling, the cost, and the environmental benefit of CDW resource management under the life cycle assessment (LCA) are proposed. Specifically, we propose a combined policy derived through three variables, namely, fines, subsidies, and charges. The target is to reduce illegal dumping behavior and landfill volume and to improve the recycling volume and environmental benefits. The model is constructed with the help of the software VENSIM, and the validity and feasibility of the model are demonstrated with data from Nantong City. The results show that a single policy cannot simultaneously improve environmental benefits, illegal dumping, recycling, and landfill behavior. A combined policy combines the advantages of three single policies, fines, subsidies, and charges, which not only can effectively curb illegal dumping and landfill disposal under the premise of prioritizing environmental benefits, but can also promote the recycling of CDW. The reasonable range for the fine is 300–350 CNY/ton; the rational range for subsidies is 30–40 CNY/ton; and the flexible range for treatment charge is 40–80 CNY/ton. The model can be used for the quantitative assessment of urban CDW management costs and environmental benefits and can also provide a theoretical basis for the government.

Abstract:In the current age of enhanced environmental awareness, transformation to sustainable management in the construction sector is needed. China currently produces the largest amount of construction and demolition (C&D) waste around the world, but the average recovery rate of the waste was only about 5% in 2017. In order to investigate problems in current C&D waste management in China, a cross-national comparative analysis is conducted among China and seven selected countries (Japan, South Korea, Germany, Italy, Austria, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom), to compare legal texts of national policies and laws which relate to C&D waste management and are currently being used. Through the comparison, problems in management of C&D waste in China are investigated. The problems could be concluded to: (a) inadequate guidance on recycling, (b) lack of market incentives in utilising recycled materials, (c) incomplete knowledge of stakeholders' responsibilities, (d) lack of penalty for other stakeholders, and (e) inefficient supervision system. By understanding these problems, this paper further provides recommendations to enhance the performance of C&D waste management in China.

Factors influencing illegal dumping of hazardous waste in China

Abstract:In recent years, illegal dumping of hazardous waste (IDHW) in China has become a recurring problem. Effective identification and exploration of the factors influencing illegal dumping are crucial for incident prevention and hazardous waste management, but its analysis has rarely been reported. Thus, this study focused on 568 cases of IDHW officially reported by the government. Through regular expressions, the categories of dumped wastes and the provinces where the incidents occurred were extracted. Furthermore, a comprehensive set of influencing factors was constructed by text mining for the case content and by the integration from the existing literature. On this basis, the unstructured and structured data were integrated using a Boolean dataset to respectively explore the association rules of influencing factors for the overall IDHW and for major waste categories, in conjunction with the extracted province information. Subsequently, a Bayesian network was constructed by utilizing the results of association rules mining and the key factors were identified through corresponding analysis. The findings of this study reveal a close connection between various influencing factors, with distinct key factors identified for different categories of hazardous waste. Among them, law-enforcement emerges as a crucial factor in most IDHW cases, while the factor of public monitoring for metallic hazardous waste and the factor of government supervision for distillation residue waste and other waste play a key role in their respective cases of illegal dumping. These findings offer a fresh research perspective for investigating the factors influencing IDHW and present helpful insights for developing effective strategies to prevent and control such incidents.

Abstract:The growing generation of construction and demolition waste (CDW) has emerged as a prominent challenge on global environmental agendas. However, the effectiveness of CDW management (CDWM) strategies varies among cities. Existing literature predominantly evaluates the effectiveness of CDWM at the project level, offering a localized perspective that fails to capture a city's comprehensive CDWM profile. This localized focus has certain limitations. To fill this gap in city-scale evaluations, this study introduces a novel model for assessing CDWM effectiveness at the municipal level. An empirical investigation was conducted across 11 cities within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) to operationalize this model. The model defines five distinct levels of CDWM effectiveness. Findings indicate that Hong Kong consistently achieves the highest level (level I), while the majority of cities fall within levels III and IV. This pattern suggests that CDWM effectiveness in the GBA is moderately developed, with uneven progress in CDW management outcomes and supporting systems. Essentially, there is a lack of synchronous development of CDWM results and guarantee systems. The proposed evaluation model enriches existing CDWM research field and offers a framework that may inform future studies in other countries.

Abstract:Rapid population growth with industrialization, modernization, and urbanization has stimulated construction activities. Demolition activities have widely been undertaken to replace old buildings and civil structures with better, bigger, and/or newer ones. The construction and demolition activities generate tremendous amounts of construction waste (CW) and demolition waste (DW) consisting of a large variety of materials with varying properties. Many types of CW and DW contain various types of pollutants such as fine residues, heavy metals, and persistent organic chemicals; thereby having deleterious impacts on the environment and human health. This study comprehensively analyzes various data and survey on the generation and characteristics of CW and DW, their current management methods, as well as the environmental and health effects of CW and DW constituents and their management. Based on the comprehensive analysis, the strategies for sustainably managing CW and DW are devised to alleviate negative impacts of current CW and DW management. Sustainable management of CW and DW should be considered at each stage of a construction project (from planning/design to post-construction). It is hoped that this study will contribute to reducing the burden of CW and DW on the construction industry and local communities.

Abstract:Abstract Incineration plants for electricity generation have offered a solution to the challenges of domestic solid waste treatment in many countries. However, their emissions, fly ash (FA) and bottom ash (BA), have had a detrimental impact on environmental quality. This study investigated the morphology, element composition, and concentration of metals in FA and BA from municipal solid waste incineration plants using scanning electronic microscopy/energy-dispersive X-ray and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry techniques. It also evaluated the distribution ratios of metal species across five fractions: exchangeable, carbonate-bound, oxide-bound, organic-bound, and sulfide-bound, and residual. The total metal content in both FA and BA was comparable, with calcium having the highest concentration (28,170–135,130 mg·kg −1 dry weight) and silver having the lowest (5.26–19.3 mg·kg −1 dry weight). However, the percentage proportion of metals differed between the extracted fractions. Except for cadmium in FA, ecological risk assessment indicated low direct bioavailability and potential risk of metals in both FA and BA. These findings contribute to the hazard assessment of FA and BA generated from waste incinerators and provide a scientific basis for developing treatment techniques for this type of waste.

Consequently, the article underscores the significance and urgency of effectively implementing measures for hazardous waste management to shield the environment and public health. Abstract:Construction and demolition waste (C&D waste) are widely recognized as the main form municipal solid waste, and its recycling and reuse are an important issue in sustainable city development. Material flow analysis (MFA) can quantify materials flows and stocks, and is a useful tool for the analysis of construction and demolition waste management. In recent years, material flow analysis has been continually researched in construction and demolition waste processing considering both single waste material and mixed wastes, and at regional, national, and global scales. Moreover, material flow analysis has had some new research extensions and new combined methods that provide dynamic, robust, and multifaceted assessments of construction and demolition waste. In this paper, we summarize and discuss the state of the art of material flow analysis research in the context of construction and demolition waste recycling and disposal. Furthermore, we also identify the current research gaps and future research directions that are expected to promote the development of MFA for construction and demolition waste processing in the field of sustainable city development.

Abstract:Domestic solid waste management (DSWM) in Vung Tau City (VTC) is emerging as an envi-ronmental problem behind rapid urban development. The amount of DSW increased rapidly, leading to a disturbance in the collection, transportation, and challenges in the implementation of DSWM at the source. This study aims to assess the situation and develop and analyze the scenarios of the DSWM system for VTC, thereby proposing strategies to improve the DSWM system for the city in 2024 - 2033. The scenarios of the DSWM system were built based on the situation analysis, the national and regional SWM regulations, and scientific assumptions that have been studied in Viet Nam. This study showed that the amount of DSW in VTC has in-creased rapidly at the rate of 7,4%/year over the past decade and reached 457.9 tons in 2022. About 80% of the DSW is collected by 500 informal collectors, who work spontaneously and are unmanaged. The minimalist and optimal DSWM models have been built and evaluated. The results showed that these two models of the DSWM should be applied in two phases, 2024-2028 and 2029-2033, respectively. According to this roadmap, the amount of DSW to the land-fill was estimated to reduce 26% of the total waste generation. The amount of recovered recy-clable waste is also estimated to be increased five times compared to 2023. Furthermore, the quality of DSW in the treatment area is suitable for composting and handling by waste-to-energy solutions.

Abstract:The illegal dumping of construction waste (CW) poses an increasingly serious environmental pollution problem with the accelerated rate of urbanization. As CW disposal capacity struggles to match municipal needs, some CW is being diverted to higher resource endowment cities rather than recycled. To address this situation, it is necessary to obtain reliable information on the characteristics and evolution of CW generation networks in China. This study combines a modified gravity model with Social Network Analysis (SNA) to analyze the spatial association networks of CW generation in four Chinese urban agglomerations between 2000 and 2020. Results reveal the evolution characteristics of the CW generation network, including increasing density and correlation and decreasing network efficiency. Furthermore, the Quality Assurance Procedure (QAP) indicates that urbanization level and population size are positively correlated with CW generations, whereas distance plays a negative role, but resources are insignificant for network formation. The findings provide insight into current patterns of waste distribution and a theoretical basis for government policy formulation in the future.

Abstract:Improper waste management has assumed a worrisome dimension in cities across many developing countries. One of its commonest features is open dumps. Open dumps in Enugu and Nsukka were investigated in this study. Waste samples were collected from ten dumps located in low-income, low-to-middle income, and high-income zones of the study area. The composition of waste was determined following standard methods and results obtained subjected to statistical analyses. Selected open dumps were subjected to detailed inspection in order to identify possible environmental impacts. Soil samples were also collected from the top soil and subsoil (15 cm) of selected dumps and analyzed for As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Pb, Ni, Cd, and Zn. The sources of contamination were determined using the principal component analysis (PCA) and cluster analysis (CA). Results of heavy metal analyses were used to determine extent of soil pollution. Food waste ranged from 29.6 to 56.5% with an average of 42.2%. Analysis along income line showed a decline in the proportion of food and rubber waste from lower to high income. The order of heavy metals concentration in waste dump soils investigated was as follows: Mn > Zn > Cu > Cr > Pb > As > Ni > Cd > Hg. The pollution indices (PI) of the dumpsites ranged from 1.87 for Ni to 1634.6 for Cu in the topsoil, and 0.62 for Ni to 1354.74 for Cu in the subsoil, indicating a severe level of pollution. Pollution load index (PLI) ranged from 25.38 to 75.07 with a mean of 60.75 for the dump surface and from 51.46 to 21.7 with a mean of 33.86 below the dump soil. Forty-three percent (43%) of the topsoil and 40% of the subsoil exhibited ecological risk index values greater than 320, indicating extreme degree of ecological risk. The first principal and second principal components with 36% and 28.2% variance respectively represent the growing impact of electronic waste disposal, specifically mobile phones, personal computers, and other potable electronic devices with short life span on waste dumps. The third principal component (10.2%) represents input from households and other forms of chemicals such as insecticides, paints, and detergents.
