Abstract:Abstract Background In a geopolitically at-risk environment, such as Palestine, gender-based violence (GBV) is still a crucial problem rooted in discriminatory laws and traditional habits exacerbated by the ongoing Israeli military occupation. Moreover, the lack of updated data makes it difficult to grasp the magnitude of the phenomenon entirely; the purpose of the current study was to explore mental health professionals’ perceptions and concerns on GBV among Palestinian women during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods Participants in the study were 30 Mental Health Professionals (MHP) selected using convenience and snowball sampling techniques from among MHP in northern West Bank, Palestine. Results A thematic content analysis revealed seven main themes of GBV during the pandemic. Palestinian MHP reported that the increased number of GBV cases among women during the COVID-19, quarantine, physical distancing measures, and closure of non-essential services significantly heightened the risks of GBV among Palestinian women. Moreover, Palestinian women involved with or married to older men or married at a very young age were at risk of GBV more than others. Results of qualitative analysis also showed that Israeli occupation and the political violence characterizing the area for decades (including restriction of movement, house demolitions, separation of family members, etc.) have also exacerbated and increased GBV in the occupied Palestinian territories. Conclusions Improving intervention skills and supervision services among Palestinian MHP to help women who face GBV is recommended. Moreover, additional research should be conducted to explore the risk and potential factors of GBV, agency, and coping strategies to deal with GBV.

Abstract:This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of intimate partner violence (IPV) among a sample of women visiting health care centers in Palestine refugee camps in Jordan. We found that different types of IPV, including physical, emotional, sexual, economic, and control behaviors by the partners were experienced by the participants. This study was among a number of studies that investigated this phenomenon in residents of Palestinian camps. It adds to existing studies in this field, however, as it focuses on the prevalence of the top five types of IPV in these women. Co-occurrence of IPV, that is, experiencing two or more types of partner violence at the same time, was noticed in these women. Experiencing control by one's partner and the presence of different attitudes between men and women toward the use of violence were factors contributing to the occurrence of this phenomenon in these women. National efforts aiming at breaking the cycle of violence should be fostered through media and public awareness campaigns. Changing people's attitudes concerning men's use and women's acceptance of violence should be the aim of these efforts.

Abstract:Lebanon’s intersecting economic and political crises exacerbate complex public health issues among both host and refugee populations. This mixed-methods study by a Lebanese service provider, in partnership with an international research institute, seeks to better understand how experiences of gender-based violence (GBV) and mental health intersect in the lives of Syrian and Lebanese women, and how to better meet these needs. It employs a randomized cross-sectional survey of 969 Abaad service users and focus groups with community members and service providers. There were significant associations between GBV and ill mental health; notably, respondents reporting transactional sex had 4 times the likelihood of severe distress (aOR 4.2; 95% CI 1.2–14.8; p ≤ 0.05). Focus groups emphasized less-visible forms of violence, such as emotional violence, and the importance of environmental factors in one’s ability to cope, noting “it always came back to the economy”. Recommendations include providing a more holistic and coordinated approach between GBV, mental health, livelihood, and basic assistance sectors; and sensitive, accessible, and higher-quality mental health services informed by GBV response actors’ experience putting in place survivor-centered programming and made available to both host and refugee community members.

Abstract:Domestic violence against women has increasingly become an important public health and social problem.Violence against women exists in both developed countries and developing countries.Risk factors of domestic violence include victim factors,perpetrator factors and cultural factors.Domestic violence grievously affects women reproductive health.It makes women more susceptible to a variety of gynecological diseases and reproductive tract infections(RTIs),unwanted pregnancy,miscarriage,pregnancy complications,even so much as death.It is not only a domestic problem,but also a social problem.Its prevention is now a long-term,comprehensive and systemic project,which requires a multi-angle and multi-sectoral collaboration.In this paper,we reviewed the prevalence of domestic violence against women and influencing factors,and its effect on women reproductive health.

Abstract:Journal of Interpersonal Violence, Ahead of Print. Violence against women is considered as one of the most serious social problems in all the societies. It is common that the abused women experience physical, psychological, and health problems, as well as reproductive health issues. Domestic violence affects women's health behaviors and ability to seek any form of health care. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between health-promoting behaviors and reproductive health needs in women experienced domestic violence. This cross-sectional study was conducted from May 5 to September 21, 2021, on 380 abused women. Cluster sampling was performed in health centers of Karaj. Data were collected using demographic survey questions, Domestic Violence Survey, Reproductive Health Needs of Domestic Violated Women scale, and health-promoting behaviors questionnaire. The mean (standard deviation) scores for reproductive health needs and health-promoting behaviors were 158.88 (20.24) and 131.08 (20.53), respectively. Psychological violence had the highest (69.5%) prevalence among all types and 37.6% of women reported severe violence. The results of Spearman's rank correlation coefficient test indicated that all dimensions of the reproductive health needs of abused women (men's participation, self-care, support and health services, and sexual and marital relationships) positively and significantly related to the total score and various dimensions of health-promoting behaviors (interpersonal relationship, health responsibility, physical activity, spiritual growth, nutrition, and stress management). The dimensions of health-promoting behaviors together can explain 21.6% of the changes in reproductive health needs based on linear regression. Violence is a global public concern and paying attention to the various health dimensions in abused women is an important aspect of the health policies. Developing health-promoting behaviors in abused women improves their reproductive health state and society as a whole.

Exposing Obstetric Violence in the Eastern Mediterranean Region: A Review of Women's Narratives of Disrespect and Abuse in Childbirth

Abstract:Background Obstetric violence (OV) threatens the provision of dignified, rights-based, high-quality, and respectful maternal care (RMC). The dearth of evidence on OV in the Eastern Mediterranean Region poses a knowledge gap requiring research to improve rights-based and respectful health practice and policy. While efforts to improve the quality of maternal health have long-existed, women's experiences of childbirth and perceptions of dignity and respect are not adequately or systematically recorded, especially in the said region. Aim This study centered on the experiences of women's mistreatment in childbirth to provide an overview of OV and offer recommendations to improve RMC. Methods A scoping review was conducted, and a total of 38 articles met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed using Bowser and Hill's framework of the seven typologies of Disrespect and Abuse (D&A) in childbirth. D&A in childbirth (or violations to RMC) is a manifestation of OV and served as a proxy to analyze its prevalence in the EMR. Findings and Discussion This study indicated that across the EMR, women experienced every type of D&A in childbirth. This happens regardless of health systems' strength or country's income, with 6 out of 7 types of D&A found in almost two-thirds of included countries. In the EMR, the most common types of D&A in childbirth are physical abuse (especially overused routine interventions) and non-dignified care (embedded in patriarchal socio-cultural norms). The intersections of these abuses enable the objectification of women's bodies and overuse of unconsented routine interventions in a hierarchical and patriarchal system that regards the power and autonomy of doctors above birthing women. If unchecked, the implications include acceptance, continuation, and underreporting of D&A in childbirth, as well as passivity toward human-rights violations, which all further cause the continuing the cycle of OV. Conclusion In order to eliminate OV, a paradigm shift is required involving infrastructure changes, education, empowerment, advocacy, a women-centered and gender-sensitive approach to health system strengthening, and policy development. Recommendations are given at individual, community, health systems, and policy levels to ensure that every woman achieves her right to health and birth in a dignified, respectful, and empowered manner.
A silent pandemic of violence against providers in obstetrics and gynecology: A mixed‐methods study based on a global survey

Abstract:Objectives To quantify and qualify the experience of workplace violence (WPV) in a global sample of providers in obstetrics and gynecology (OBGYN). Methods We performed a mixed‐methods analysis on data from a global survey. Survey content was designed around categorical and open‐ended questions in relation to WPV; the occurrence and character, the physical and psychological consequences, training and support structures, and perceived triggers of the experience of WPV. Quantitative data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and text data using mixed deductive‐inductive content analysis. These data were integrated using convergent joint display. Results Between October 2023 and January 2024, survey responses were collected from 77 individual countries. Among the final sample, 764/1016 (75.2%) had experienced WPV, 699/1016 (68.8%) verbal, and 123/1016 (12.1%) physical violence. The violence affected physical health, psychological health, or job satisfaction for 106/764 (13.9%), 36/7642 (47.4%), and 222/764 (29.1%) of individuals respectively; 216/764 (28.3%) received support. Main WPV triggers were staff shortages, lack of security personnel, and long waiting times, identified by 38.8%, 37.5%, and 37.3% of respondents respectively. Qualitative data indicated that violence caused severe and long‐lasting suffering. Catalysts for WPV were often reported as complex interplays between unmet or unrealistic expectations and insufficient resources. Lack of support for WPV was explained as violence being "part of the job" and a culture of assumed resilience among providers. Conclusion WPV against OBGYN providers seems to be ubiquitous, arises from a complex interplay of factors, and causes significant injury while receiving insufficient mitigation and support.

Abstract:Gender based violence (GBV) remains one of the most serious threats to the health and safety of women worldwide. The problem is even more pronounced in refugee populations where women are at increased risk of violence. Continuing international conflict has resulted in several million people seeking asylum in other countries each year, over half of whom are women. A systematic literature review of articles published between 2010 and 2020 was conducted. Databases included PubMed, PsychINFO and Google Scholars. Thirteen studies met the inclusion criteria. Study findings indicate that refugee women are extremely vulnerable to gender-based violence and although international NGOs and UN agencies have published guidelines relating to the prevention and management of GBV, they usually fail to address the complex dynamics and factors contributing to GBV exposure of female refugees. From our review is obvious that these services and/or interventions are either not available or the affected populations don’t have satisfying access, use, uptake and quality, due to a range of different barriers. In conclusion, it is unlikely that the flow of refugees will diminish significantly in the near future. A genuine commitment to protect refugee women from gender-based violence needs more action to tackle the various causes of vulnerability to violence, and to provide adequate services for those experiencing such violence, is needed.

Abstract:This study aimed to systematically review studies that examined the prevalence of gender based violence (GBV) that included intimate partner violence (IPV) and non-IPV among women in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). This evidence is an important aspect to work towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) target of eliminating all forms of violence in SSA. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines were followed. Ovid Medline, CINAHL, Cochrane Central, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science were used to source articles with stringent eligibility criteria. Studies on GBV in SSA countries that were published in English from 2008 to 2019 were included. A random effect meta-analysis was used. Fifty-eight studies met the inclusion criteria. The pooled prevalence of IPV among women was 44%, the past year-pooled prevalence of IPV was 35.5% and non-IPV pooled prevalence was 14%. The highest prevalence rates of IPV that were reported included emotional (29.40%), physical (25.87%) and sexual (18.75%) violence. The sub-regional analysis found that women residing in Western (30%) and Eastern (25%) African regions experienced higher levels of emotional violence. Integrated mitigation measures to reduce GBV in SSA should focus mainly on IPV in order to achieve the SDG’s that will lead to sustainable changes in women’s health.

Abstract:The United Nations defines that violence against women is any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual, or mental harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion, or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life. The main objective of the study was to find out the effects of violence against women. This paper was based on qualitative data using both the primary and secondary data sources. In this purpose the snow-ball sampling method was used to select the 110 victimized respondent women. In the study area, out of 110 women, all the women who had heard about women violence and higher number of women faced coercive sex during pregnancy period. All the women were facing health problem up to now because of the violence directed against them. It also makes the women to remain in the position of inferiority complex all these lead to women's reproductive health as well as well-being more vulnerable throughout the life.
Reproductive health care utilization among refugees in Jordan: Provisional support and domestic violence

Abstract:Objectives: Conflict and displacement are associated with poverty, disruption of services, loss of identity, reduced care for reproductive needs, and reduced provision of health care, among other things. This article uses the framework outlined by Obermeyer and Potter to test how refugee and native status influence utilization of reproductive health services and experience with domestic violence in a context of high refugee inhabitants and strong refugee-focused non-governmental organization presence. This article addresses the following: (1) coverage, source, and method of contraceptives; (2) variation in reproductive health experience by source of contraception; and finally, (3) factors determining variation in the utilization of reproductive health services and domestic violence experiences for individuals living in and out of refugee camps. Methods: The data is the 2012 Jordan Demographic and Health Survey, and the method utilized is logistic regression. Results: Findings suggest that refugee women serviced by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency have greater access to health-related resources (family planning and contraception), but they have weaker positions in the family as evidenced by domestic violence experiences. Conclusion: It is plausible that provisional resources are the easiest for an aid organization to provide, while the complications of identity loss and the loss of a sense of space pose a challenge for refugees and aid organizations.

Abstract:Violence against women (VAW) is a significant public health problem. With the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the frequency and severity of VAW has escalated globally. Approximately one in four women in Nepal have been exposed to either physical, psychological, and/or sexual violence in their lifetime, with husbands or male partners being the perpetrators in most cases. VAW prevention has been under-researched in low- and middle-income countries, including Nepal. This study aims to explore the perspectives of local stakeholders, including healthcare providers and survivors of violence in Madhesh Province. The overarching goal is to provide insights for designing prevention and support programs that are acceptable to communities and cater to the needs of survivors.

Abstract:Violence against women is a global public health problem with about one in three women experiencing either physical and or sexual intimate partner violence during their lifetime. Globally as many as 38% of homicides committed against women are by a male intimate partner. Violence against women may have negative effects on their mental, physical, and reproductive health (WHO fact sheet, 2016). Untreated individuals who have experienced violence or life-threatening situations may develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This disorder has the potential to be life-changing and cause negative psychological and medical issues (Rokach, Ahmed, & Patel, 2017). This potentially life-changing nature and consequence of violence affecting women world-wide deserves greater attention to ensure elimination of risk factors, financial support of investigational studies to promote detection of victims, and research to increase therapeutic efficacy of remediation. These efforts should be bolstered by all physicians, mental health experts, social service specialists, and public health advocates.
Survey of violence against women at a refugee settlement in Uganda

Abstract:Sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) can have long-term repercussions on the mental and physical health of survivors. The threat of SGBV increases for women and girls in times of crisis and is on the rise in humanitarian emergencies. For example, women in refugee camps are at risk of SGBV. Associate Professor Tamaki Hatano is working to promote awareness of this situation and help establish a future where SGBV is eradicated. In her work, she conducts interviews with female refugees in order to hear their stories and learn of their experiences. At present, Hatano is studying the Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement in Uganda. Although her work has been interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2015 and 2016 she visited the Settlement and interviewed 30 women. In doing so, she found that SGBV, including rape and violence in the form of theft and threats, is pervasive. This work also highlighted the impact of SGBV on physical and psychological health and how it can alter life paths. This work confirmed to Hatano that there is a need for improved systems in place, including the establishment of a culture in which women feel safe reporting SGBV and also feel assured that their experiences will be taken seriously and that they will be protected. In enhancing awareness and understanding of SGBV, Hatano envisions a future where it is eradicated.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Armed conflict and insecurity have been linked to deteriorations in reproductive health and rights globally. In Nigeria, armed violence has taken a significant toll on women's and girls' health and safety. However, knowledge is limited about how conflict shapes attitudes surrounding their ability to make autonomous decisions on relationships and childbearing. Drawing on a socioecological framework and terror management theory, we aimed to investigate the association between conflict, insecurity, and attitudes toward women's and girls' reproductive autonomy in Nigeria.METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study using data from two sources: the World Values Survey (WVS) and the Uppsala Conflict Data Program-Georeferenced Event Dataset (UCDP-GED). Nationally representative data on attitudes of 559 men and 534 women was collected by WVS in 2017-2018. Linear probability models estimated the association between attitudes toward five dimensions of women and girl's reproductive autonomy (contraception, safe abortion, marital decision-making, delayed childbearing, early marriage), respondents' perceptions of neighborhood insecurity using WVS data, and geospatial measures of conflict exposure drawn from UCDP-GED.RESULTS: Exposure to armed conflict and perceived neighborhood insecurity were associated with more supportive attitudes toward access to safe abortion among both men and women. Among women, conflict exposure was associated with higher support for contraception and the perception that early marriage can provide girls with security. Conflict-affected men were more likely to support a delay in girls' childbearing.CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that conflict and insecurity pose a threat to, but also facilitate opportunities for, women's and girls' reproductive autonomy. Contraception, abortion, early marriage, and postponement or childbearing may be perceived as risk-aversion strategies in response to mortality threats, livelihood losses, and conflict-driven sexual violence. Our findings foreshadow changes in fertility and relationship patterns in conflict-affected Nigeria and highlight the need for health programming to ensure access to contraception and safe abortion services.

Reliable data related to the health of mothers and reproduction is required to inform public health policies. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the impact of armed conflict on services and outcomes related to maternal and reproductive health. Objective: To explore the impact of armed conflict on services and outcomes related to maternal and reproductive health in North Wollo, Amhara, and Ethiopia by 2022. Methods: This study used an institutional and community-based exploratory design. Six focus group discussions and 44 in-depth interviews were conducted with healthcare professionals, administrators, women, and Non Governmental Organization workers. Each item was recorded in audio, verbatim transcription was made and converted into English. By using OpenCode version 4.03 thematic analyses was performed. Results: Three overarching themes were identified. The first theme was the inadequate standards of maternal and reproductive health services. This includes the breakdown of infrastructure, shortages of medicines and medical supplies, and the lack of sterility of available limited materials and procedures. The second theme was poor maternal and reproductive health status. It includes poor pregnancy, delivery, reproductive and fertility-related health outcomes. The last theme was the limited access to maternal and reproductive services. Conclusion: Armed conflicts have enormous effects on services and results related to the health of mothers and reproductive processes. Addressing these effects is essential for designing and implementing public health measures to improve services related to the health of mothers and the reproductive system. Reproductive health encompasses all aspects of an individual's physical, mental, and social well-being and is not limited to the lack of illness or disability in relation to the reproductive system and its operations. Reproductive health is the state in which an individual can have a fulfilling and safe sexual life, reproduce, and have the autonomy to choose whether, when, and how often to do so. 5 One of the majority significant measures to lower maternal related illness and death are maternal and reproductive healthcare services. As a result, over the past 20 years, Ethiopia has given this subject particular attention. One of the six main focuses of a nation's reproductive health plan is maternal health. 6 By 2030, the global maternal mortality ratio is expected to drop to fewer than 70 per 100,000 live births. 7 The world is not on track to achieve this goal. Abstract:The topic of obstetric and gynecological aggression is a widespread topics, but at the same taboo. The reason is the stigma and fear of women who have been subjected to medical violence. This is something that is not spoken out loud, is not put on public display, because behind it lies pain and shame. Therefore, they do not attach any importance to the topic of obstetric violence. According to modern data, every third woman in the world suffers from the inhumane actions of obstetricians. And these actions lead to irreparable consequences in the life of every woman. The purpose of the study is to assess the impact of obstetric violence on the quality of a woman's life. Background. To identify the main ways of overcoming this problem. It was established that the negative experience of visiting a gynecologist associated with feeling of pain causes a feeling of fear before the next examination, this reduces visits to preventive examinations, which can lead to the detection of diseases at later stages of its development and complicate the treatment. The negative experience of visiting a gynecologist associated with the feeling of pain worsens the quality of life of a woman according to the indicators of the “Mental health” component.
