Abstract:Formaldehyde, as an important pollutant in indoor air, has always been of great concern. In the newly issued "Standards for indoor air quality (GB/T 18883-2022)", the standard limit of formaldehyde has been restricted to 0.08 mg/m3. In order to better promote the implementation and application of this new standard, this study reviewed and interpreted the relevant technical content for determining the standard limit, including the indoor concentration and human exposure levels of formaldehyde, the health effects of formaldehyde, and the derivation of safety reference values. It also proposed prospect for the future development and revision of quality standards for formaldehyde in indoor air.
A Novel Business Intelligence Technique to Improve High Performance within an Organization Applying Insights from Hydrogeological Case

Abstract:Using the ubiquitous satellites, smart phones and personal devices, users are generating big data and multimedia effortlessly. These multimedia (including text, audio, photos, video, images) are geo-coded and time-stamped (spatio-temporal data). Unfortunately, the share volume, velocity, variety, and variability of spatio-temporal data pose serious challenges to the current spatio-temporal data analysis tools for understanding and identifying which data are critical to improving our tactic or strategic decision making. To address this issue, our study presents how Fourier decomposition analysis and surface curvature signature, a novel business intelligence technique, can be used to enhance the visualization of big data for business decision making and competitive advantage. We use hydrogeological well data to test the technique; and the results have practical implications that can be applied by organizations to track extreme market conditions, follow online shopping behavior of web users and gain knowledge for better decision-making.

Abstract:The last two decades have witnessed rapid urbanization and economic growth accompanied by severe indoor air pollution of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in China. However, indoor VOC pollution across China has not been well characterized and documented. This study is a systematic review of field measurements of eight target VOCs (benzene, toluene, xylenes, acetaldehyde, p‐dichlorobenzene, butadiene, trichloroethylene, and tetrachloroethylene) in residences, offices, and schools in China from 2000 to 2021. The results show that indoor pollution of benzene, toluene, and xylenes has been more serious in China than in other countries. Spatiotemporal distribution shows lower indoor VOC levels in east and south‐east regions and a declining trend from 2000 to 2021. Moving into a dwelling more than 1 year after decoration and improving ventilation could significantly reduce exposure to indoor VOCs. Reducing benzene exposure is urgently needed because it is associated with greater health risks (4.5 × 10−4 for lifetime cancer risk and 8.3 for hazard quotient) than any other VOCs. The present study enriches the database of indoor VOC levels and provides scientific evidence for improving national indoor air quality standards as well as estimating the attributable disease burden caused by VOCs in China.

Abstract:Perfluorinated compounds, especially Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), are widely detected in water environments in China. Considering the potential health risks of drinking water exposure routes, PFOA and PFOS have been added to the water quality reference index of the newly issued "Standards for Drinking Water Quality (GB5749-2022)", with limit values of 40 and 80 ng/L, respectively. This study analyzed and discussed the relevant technical contents for determining the limits of the hygiene standard, including the environmental existence level and exposure status of PFOA and PFOS, health effects, derivation of safety reference values, and determination of hygiene standard limits. It also proposed prospects for the future direction of formulating drinking water standards.

Abstract:The status of indoor air pollution and its control in China are reviewed by introducing the pollution characteristics of major indoor air pollutants, the strategies and measures adopted to control indoor air pollution, as well as the major problems existing in the current indoor air pollution control. Although indoor pollution of formaldehyde and benzene has been effectively alleviated in recent years in China, indoor pollution of toluene and xylenes is still serious. Besides, studies show that indoor pollution of particulate matter (PM), biological pollutants, and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) might also be serious in China. The establishment and implementation of indoor air quality (IAQ)-related regulations and standards, the research on indoor air pollution and its control, and the development of indoor environmental monitoring and cleaning industry have played significant roles in preventing and controlling indoor air pollution in China. However, problems such as lack of mandatory standards for IAQ, lack of regulation and labeling of pollutant emissions from indoor decorating and refurbishing materials, lack of an effective performance evaluation system for air cleaning products, and lack of proper maintenance of air cleaners remain to be solved for further improvement of IAQ.
[Pollutions of Indoor Fine Particles in Four Types of Public Places and the Influencing Factors].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To study the levels of pollutions caused by fine particulate matter (PM(2.5)) in the public places and investigate the possible influencing factors. METHODS:A total of 20 public places in four types such as rest room in bath center, restaurant, karaoke bars and cyber cafe in Tongzhou district in Beijing were chosen in this study; indoor and outdoor PM(2.5) was monitored by TSI sidepak AM510. Data under varying conditions were collected and analyzed, such as doors or windows or mechanical ventilation devices being opened, rooms cramped with people and smoking. RESULTS:The average concentration of indoor PM(2.5) in 20 public places was (334.6 +/- 386.3) microg/m(3), ranging from 6 microg/m(3) to 1956 microg/m(3); while in bath center, restaurant, karaoke bars and cyber cafe were (116.9 +/- 100.1)microg/m(3), (317.9 +/- 235.3) microg/m(3), (750.6 +/- 521.6)microg/m(3) and (157.5 +/- 98.5) microg/m(3) respectively. The concentrations of PM(2.5) in restaurant (compared with bath center: Z = -10.785, P < 0.01; compared with karaoke bars: Z = -10.488, P < 0.01; compared with cyber cafe: Z = -7.547, P < 0.01) and karaoke bars (compared with bath center: Z = -16.670, P < 0.01; compared with cyber cafe: Z = -15.682, P < 0.01) were much higher than those in other two places. Single-factor analysis revealed that the average concentration of indoor PM(2.5) in 20 public places was associated with the number of smokers per cube meters(9.13 x 10(-3); r = 0.772, F = 26.579, P < 0.01) and ventilation score [(2.5 +/- 1.5) points; r = 0.667, F = 14.442, P < 0.01], and there were significant correlation between the average indoor and outdoor levels in restaurant [(317.9 +/- 235.3) microg/m(3), (67.8 +/- 78.9) microg/m(3); r = 0.918, F = 16.013, P = 0.028] and cyber cafe [(157.5 +/- 98.5) microg/m(3), (67.7 +/- 43.7) microg/m(3); r = 0.955, F = 30.785, P = 0.012]. Furthermore, significant correlation was observed between the average concentration of indoor PM(2.5) [(157.5 +/- 98.5) microg/m(3)]and the number of people per cube meters (288.7 x 10(-3)) in cyber cafe (r = 0.891, F = 11.615, P = 0.042). Multiple regression analysis showed that smoking (b' = 0.581, t = 3.542, P = 0.003) and ventilation (b' = -0.348, t = -2.122, P = 0.049) were the major factors that may influence the concentration of indoor PM(2.5) in four public places. With cluster analysis, the results showed that the major factors that influence the concentration of indoor PM(2.5) was the outdoor PM(2.5) levels [(49.6 +/- 39.5) microg/m(3); b = 1.556, t = 3.760, P = 0.007] when ventilation (score > 2) was relatively good. The number of smokers per cube meters (14.7 x 10(-3)) became the major influence factor when the ventilation score = 2 (b = 140.957, t = 3.108, P = 0.013) and 51.8% increases of indoor PM(2.5) was attributed to smoking. CONCLUSION:This study indicated that smoking was the main source of indoor PM(2.5) in public places. Outdoor PM(2.5) should be correlated with indoor PM(2.5) concentration under drafty situation.
Indoor air quality analysis of residential buildings in northeast China based on field measurements and longtime monitoring

Abstract:Outdoor air contamination was frequently observed and focused in northeast China in winter when severe cold days are common and understanding dynamic characteristics of indoor air quality in this area is essential for occupants' ventilation strategies. Herein, using spectrophotometric method, GC-MS (Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer) method, TSI DustTrak particle tester and Telaire 7001 CO2 tester, we investigated the concentration change of formaldehyde (HCHO), volatile organic compounds (VOCs), PM2.5 and CO2 of 21 houses for 4 seasons under 2 conditions (airtight and natural ventilation). Moreover, 6 houses were selected to install convenient sensors for longtime monitoring. Outdoor temperature, concentration of PM2.5, residents' opening window behavior, indoor infiltration rate, temperature, relative humidity and the furniture surface area were also recorded for comparison and correlation analysis. According to the detected results, worst indoor conditions were revealed that average concentrations of HCHO (autumn), TVOC (summer), PM2.5 (winter) and CO2 (winter) were 0.094 mg/m3, 0.924 mg/m3, 0.073 mg/m3, and 883 ppm, respectively. Indoor concentration of PM2.5, TVOC and CO2 exceeded the standard limit and they changed with seasonal characteristics. The observed 4 factors have different effects on indoor air quality. Based on this research, it is recommended that outdoor condition be considered while opening and closing window in winter and ventilation be strengthened in summer.

Abstract:In this study, 31 workers at a university were randomly selected for indoor environmental monitoring in Wuhan. Two indicators, formaldehyde and total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), and using 139 monitoring points, monitored the indoor environment (including home and workplace) as well as the interior space of the main furniture. This study carried out the environmental quality assessment for TVOC based on the dB index method and the health risk assessment of indoor formaldehyde for the university staff receptors and, then focused on health risk in home environment to carry out detailed environmental health management. The results showed that TVOC in the three types of home spaces exceeded about 80% of the national standard. The excessive formaldehyde ratios for kitchens (79%), bedrooms (77%) and living rooms (74%) were calculated. Formaldehyde health risks all exceeded the United States Environmental Protection Agency, (USEPA) acceptable risk threshold. The formaldehyde concentrations in workplaces were about 0.03 mg·m−3. While the risk contribution of the home environment to the total average health risk (0.0014, whether male and female) is about 96%. For the adapted and unadapted persons, 90% and 55% of the monitoring points were located within the long-term tolerable range of TVOC decibel application, respectively. Long-term exposure to such an environment can lead to the Sick Building Syndrome (SBS). On the other hand, through comparison of the concentration of pollutants in the interior spaces of furniture and home spaces, it was determined tentatively that the pollutants were mainly concentrated in rarely used furniture. In summary, the air pollution in the studied homes of university staff was much serious than that in workplaces, which showed a need to manage TVOC and formaldehyde pollution by the three means: the purchase of green products, removal of internal pollution from furniture, and creating a good indoor volatile diffusion environment to create a healthy home environment.

Indoor air quality and its health effects in offices and school buildings in the Yangtze River Delta

Abstract:Indoor air quality is closely related to human health, and increasing studies have highlighted that poor indoor air quality presents a threat to occupants' health in office and school buildings. This paper aims to analyze the exposure levels and health effects of indoor air pollutants in office and school buildings in the Yangtze River Delta, China. The published studies from 1980 to 2020 concerning indoor pollutants (including formaldehyde, PM 2.5 , PM 10 , CO 2 , TVOC, benzene, toluene, xylene, ammonia, microbial pollutants, and radon) in this zone were systematically reviewed. The Composite Index Method was used to evaluate indoor air quality, and DALYs (disability-adjusted life years) were evaluated by the IND and ID methods to quantify the health effects of inhaled air pollutants. The review found that PM 2.5 concentrations exceeded current standards in China in 57% of the study samples in office buildings, while formaldehyde, benzene, TVOC, and ammonia exceeded existing standards in 60%, 62%, 61%, and 86% of the samples, respectively. In school buildings, 55% and 100% of the samples with the formaldehyde and ammonia concentrations exceeded the limits in standards, respectively. The evaluation of indoor air quality showed that office and school buildings in the Yangtze River Delta were at a medium and light pollution level, respectively. Furthermore, based on the DALYs value, the health risks of studied pollutants were ranked as PM 2.5 > formaldehyde > ammonia > benzene > toluene > xylene. This review pointed out that in over half of the studies, the levels of pollutants (PM 2.5 , formaldehyde, benzene, TVOC, and ammonia) in office and school buildings exceeded the limits set by the current indoor air quality standard. PM 2.5 and formaldehyde played important roles in impacting human health. Additionally, the levels of pollution varied among cities, and there were differences in health effects caused by different air pollutants, which should be noticed. This review provides valuable information on the levels and health effects of major pollutants, contributing to the control of main pollutants in school and office buildings.

Risk Assessment of Population Inhalation Exposure to Volatile Organic Compounds and Carbonyls in Urban China.

Abstract:Over the past three decades, China has experienced rapid urbanization. The risks to its urban population posed by inhalation exposure to hazardous air pollutants (HAPs) have not been well characterized. Here, we summarize recent measurements of 16 highly prevalent HAPs in urban China and compile their distribution inputs. Based on activity patterns of urban Chinese working adults, we derive personal exposures. Using a probabilistic risk assessment method, we determine cancer and non-cancer risks for working females and males. We also assess the uncertainty associated with risk estimates using Monte Carlo simulation, accounting for variations in HAP concentrations, cancer potency factors (CPFs) and inhalation rates. Average total lifetime cancer risks attributable to HAPs are 2.27×10−4 (2.27 additional cases per 10,000 people exposed) and 2.93×10−4 for Chinese urban working females and males, respectively. Formaldehyde, 1,4-dichlorobenzene, benzene and 1,3-butadiene are the major risk contributors yielding the highest median cancer risk estimates, >1×10−5. About 70% of the risk is due to exposures occurring in homes. Outdoor sources contribute most to the risk of benzene, ethylbenzene and carbon tetrachloride, while indoor sources dominate for all other compounds. Chronic exposure limits are not exceeded for non-carcinogenic effects, except for formaldehyde. Risks are overestimated if variation is not accounted for. Sensitivity analyses demonstrate that the major contributors to total variance are range of inhalation rates, CPFs of formaldehyde, 1,4-dichlorobenzene, benzene and 1,3-butadiene, and indoor home concentrations of formaldehyde and benzene. Despite uncertainty, risks exceeding the acceptable benchmark of 1×10−6 suggest actions to reduce exposures. Future efforts should be directed toward large-scale measurements of air pollutant concentrations, refinement of CPFs and investigation of population exposure parameters. The present study is a first effort to estimate carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks of inhalation exposure to HAPs for the large working populations of Chinese cites.

Abstract:With the rapid development of Chinese urban industry,the pollution of volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons(VCHs),such as trichloroethylene(TCE) and tetrachloroethylene(PCE) is particularly notable.In the urban development process,the redevelopment of industrial sites polluted by VCHs to public places such as residential,commercial areas or schools is frequently endanger the publics health.Therefore,the environmental assessment before re-development of polluted sites has an important significance.In this paper,their production and consumption in the worldwide were introduced.The present distribution of volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons in soil and groundwater were also summarized.Combining with the relevant regulations and environmental quality standards in soil and groundwater,general measures were supplied for volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons control.The work would be meaningful for the development of volatile chlorinated hydrocarbons emission standards and pollution control.
Indoor formaldehyde levels in residences, schools, and offices in China in the past 30 years: A systematic review

Abstract:Exposure to formaldehyde causes a variety of adverse health outcomes, while the distributions of indoor formaldehyde in different building types are still not clear in China. In this study, based on the systematic review of previously published data and Monte Carlo simulation, we assessed geographical and temporal distributions of indoor formaldehyde concentrations in residences, schools, and offices across China. A total of 397 studies covered 34 provincial-level regions since 1986 were collected. The results showed that indoor formaldehyde concentrations in residences, schools, and offices in nationwide were decreasing over years due to the publishment of indoor air quality standards since 2002. During 2011 to 2015, the median concentrations of indoor formaldehyde in newly renovated residences, schools, and offices were 153 mu g/m(3), 163 mu g/m(3), and 94 mu g/m(3), with an exceeding rate of 82%, 46%, and 91% considering a standard threshold of 100 mu g/m(3) at that time, while the exceeding rate was less than 5% for buildings that were renovated beyond one year. Our findings release the temporal trends and geographic distributions of indoor formaldehyde concentrations in residences, schools, and offices in China in the past 30 years, and provide basic data for the comprehensive evaluation of disease burden attributable to indoor formaldehyde exposure.

Abstract:Human exposure to dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) and the subsequent risk to human health remain an important concern due to the "new" input of DDTs in the environment, especially since exposure to DDTs in indoor microenvironments is often ignored. In this study, we identified a new source of DDT emission in indoor environments and evaluated the health risk from the exposure to DDTs by investigating DDTs in indoor and outdoor dust, air, and coatings of household items in rural areas of Qingyuan, South China. The concentrations of DDTs in house dust and air were < MQL (method quantification limit)–3450 ng/g (median 42.4 ng/g) and 22.7–965 pg/m 3 (median 49.5 pg/m 3 ), respectively, which were significantly higher than the outdoor DDT values. Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) was the main isomer in air samples, while DDT was the dominant isomer in indoor dust. Significant correlations between different DDT isomers were observed in indoor samples but not in outdoor samples. Furniture coating was identified as a source of DDTs in the indoor dust. The total daily exposure dose of DDTs (1.75 × 10 –2 ng/kg bw/day for adults and 1.28 × 10 –1 ng/kg bw/day for toddlers) through inhalation, dust ingestion, and dermal contact was found unlikely to pose a health risk. Our findings provide new insights into the emission sources and health risks caused by DDT indoors, highlighting the need to further investigate the toxicity mechanisms of parent DDT compound.

Abstract:There has been an increased concern on indoor air quality (IAQ) in residences since the majority of individuals' time is mainly spent indoors. We inspected and measured indoor environmental parameters in 399 homes in northeast China in order to study IAQ. We systematically measured multilevel environmental parameters (physical, chemical, and biological) in children's bedrooms during all seasons. The results indicated that the median values for indoor temperature, relative humidity, total volatile organic compounds (TVOC), and formaldehyde concentrations throughout the year were within the Chinese national standards. However, the median carbon dioxide concentrations exceeded 1000 ppm during spring, autumn, and winter. In the same seasons, the air change rate (ACR) was below the minimum required level of 0.5 h −1 . Di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), di-n-butyl phthalate (DnBP), and di-isobutyl phthalate (DiBP) were predominantly detected in settled dust, displaying median concentrations of 126.9, 41.5, and 16.3 μg/g, respectively. Notably, phthalate concentrations were significantly higher in urban houses as compared to rural houses. Furthermore, median concentrations of Dermatophagoides farinae (Der f) and endotoxin were 689.4 ng/g and 3689.1 EU/g, respectively, trending higher in winter than summer. There was a negative correlation between ACR and chemical pollutants (TVOC, formaldehyde, and DiBP). In conclusion, northeast Chinese homes had poor indoor air quality with ubiquitous exposure to modern chemical compounds and insufficient ventilation.

Abstract:To reveal ambient air pollution level of volatile organic compounds in university laboratories,27 university laboratories completed in different years were sampled for ambient air in accordance with GB50325-2010 national standard methods to measure the total volatile organic compounds(TVOC) concentration.It was found that 3 out of 27 laboratories exceeded pollution standards in TVOC.A significantly higher TVOC concentration was shown in chemical laboratories than in biological ones and others(P0.05).And little difference was found among laboratories of the same subject and in different years of completion(P0.05).It is,therefore,concluded that the quality control of construction and decoration materials,laboratory management and indoor air ventilation are recommended for reduction of volatile organic compounds concentration in lab ambient air.
Phthalate Levels in Chinese Residences: Seasonal and Regional Variations and the Implication on Human Exposure

Abstract:Indoor pollution of manmade semivolatile organic compounds (SVOCs) such as phthalates are a growing threat to human health. Herein we summarize the dust-phase phthalate concentrations in Chinese residences reported from 2011 to 2021 and simulate corresponding airborne concentrations based on equilibrium models. The simulation considers seasonal and regional variations in indoor temperature and PM2.5 concentration, in contrast to the common practice of using constant values. Results show that variations in these two environmental factors lead to up to ten- and six-fold variations in the monthly median gas- and particle-phase concentrations of phthalates, respectively, in residences in individual climate zones. For higher-vapor-pressure species di-n-butyl phthalate and di-isobutyl phthalate, the resultant seasonal and regional variations in aggregate non-diet intake can reach six- and three-fold, respectively. These results have important implications on exposure assessment of SVOCs and epidemiological evaluation of their health effects.
Significant but Spatiotemporal-Heterogeneous Health Risks Caused by Airborne Exposure to Multiple Toxic Trace Elements in China

Abstract:Airborne trace elements (TEs) pose a notable threat to human health due to their toxicity and carcinogenicity, whereas their exposures and associated health risks in China remain unclear. Here, we present the first nationwide assessment of spatiotemporal exposure to 11 TEs in China by coupling a bottom-up emission inventory with a modified CMAQ model capable of TE simulation. Associated health risks of 11 TEs are then evaluated using a set of risk assessment models. Our results show that the CMAQ model could reasonably reproduce the spatiotemporal variations of 11 TEs in China compared to observations. We find significant but spatiotemporal-heterogeneous cancer risks associated with high-level exposure of TEs in China. Gridded cell concentrations of hexavalent chromium, arsenic, and nickel in eastern and central China usually exceed China's air quality standard limits, resulting in significant cancer risks that affected over 85% of the entire population in China in 2015. National annual mean population-weighted concentrations of 11 TEs decrease by 9.8–35.6% from 2012 to 2015, largely attributed to emission reduction from coal combustion. Abstract:Airborne particles were collected from both indoor and ambient environments of residential and office buildings on Peking University campus in summer 2003.HCHs and DDTs were analyzed.The mean residuals in the samples from the indoor and the ambient environments were 0.139ng·m -3 and 0.163 ng·m -3 for ∑HCH and 0.401ng·m -3 and 0.424 ng·m -3 for DDT,respectively.There were no significant difference between the indoor and the ambient environments.However,the concentrations in ng·g -1 for both HCHs and DDTs in indoor air were much higher than those in the ambient environment due to relatively low level of TSP indoor.Similar profiles were found for HCH isomers both indoor and outdoor,suggesting a common origin.The indoor environment of the office building studied,where HCHs were often used in experiments,was contaminated by the chemicals.
