Abstract:This study aims to investigate treatment efficiency and evaluate the energy efficacy of integrated electrocoagulation system combined with ozonation, Fenton, and photo-Fenton processes for successful textile dye-bath effluents' treatment. In this regard, the characterization of physicochemical parameters such as pH, turbidity, salinity, total dissolved solids (TDS), total suspended solids (TSS), electrical conductivity (EC), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) was analyzed to estimate removal efficiency of each treatment process. Moreover, the electrical energy consumption of all aforementioned processes was measured individually to work out cost-effectiveness. Fenton process appeared to be ineffective for reducing COD and other parameters. While the overall performance of ECS alone showed far better results, COD and color removal efficiencies were 57.4%, and 40%, respectively. However, the application of ECS/O3 resulted in complete decolorization and almost 99.7% COD removal under optimized operating conditions including ozone flow 300 mg/h, pH 7.1, Temperature 25 °C. ECS/photo-Fenton process resulted in COD, and color removal of 95.6%, and 97%, respectively. Electrical Energy per Order of ECS was found 1.58 kWh/m3 for minimum removal of dyes and COD. ECS/Ozonation is responsible for 100% decolorization but at a very high cost. ECS/photo-Fenton process proved to be the second-best option in terms of treatment and energy consumption. Hence, an integrated treatment system of ECS with AOPs appeared to be the most feasible and eco-friendly. That could lead to the treated wastewater for reuse and recycling purposes within the industry.

Abstract:Fenton oxidation is an advanced treatment process for printing and dyeing wastewater. The process conditions（pH value, the dosage of ferrous sulfate, the dosage of hydrogen peroxide, reaction time, etc.） of Fenton oxidation were used to optimize for the treatment of dyeing wastewater,and the cost was calculated for optimization. The results showed that under the process conditions of pH=3.5, ferrous sulfate dosage of 0.15 g/L, 30%hydrogen peroxide dosage of 0.26 ml/L, 30% sodium hydroxide dosage of 0.24 ml/L, and PAM dosage of 1 mg/L, the effluent CODcr average value was 22.8 mg/L, the COD removal rate was 67.5%, and the lowest reagent cost was 0.98 yuan/m~3.

Abstract:Ozonation is one of the most effective and efficient advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) and has shown great potential in the treatment of industrial effluent and wastewater. In the present work, the ozone-Fenton process for % COD and color removal together with electrical energy per order (EE/O) determination for distillery industrial wastewater (DIW) was established. The process was developed by combining the ozone (O3) with the Fenton (Fe2+/H2O2) process. The ozone-Fenton (O3/Fe2+/H2O2) was compared with other treatment processes such as O3, Fe2+, H2O2, O3/Fe2+, O3/H2O2, and Fe2+/H2O2 for EE/O together with % COD and color removal efficiency for DIW. The removal of color at 100% and chemical oxygen demand (COD) of 96.875% were achieved with a minimum of EE/O of 0.5315 kWh/m3 using the O3/Fe2+/H2O2 process by operating at optimum conditions. The % COD and color values obtained using O3/Fe2+/H2O2 were significantly higher than those obtained using O3, Fe2+, H2O2, O3/Fe2+, O3/H2O2, and Fe2+/H2O2 processes. The % color, % COD removal, and its associated EE/O were evaluated by varying Fe2+, H2O2, O3 inlet and COD concentration, and initial wastewater pH using the O3/Fe2+/H2O2 process. The synergy effect of the O3 and Fe2+/H2O2 processes was evaluated and reported. Our experimental findings suggest that combining O3 with the Fe2+/H2O2 process could effectively treat industrial effluent and wastewater.

Polyneuronal innervation of an adult and embryonic lobster muscle.

Abstract:Motor innervation of the deep extensor muscle in the abdomen of lobsters (Homarus americanus) was compared in adults and embryos using electrophysiological techniques. There is widespread innervation of the adult muscle by the common excitor and inhibitor axons and regionally restricted or private innervation by three more excitor axons. In the embryo the earliest sign of functional innervation revealed a single inhibitory and two to three excitatory axons thus denoting simultaneous innervation by the full complement of axons. In corroboration, serial-section electron microscopy revealed several axon profiles invading the embryonic deep extensor muscles and giving rise to well-defined neuromuscular synapses with presynaptic dense bars. Innervation patterns to homologous regions of the embryonic and adult muscles were similar, consisting of a few large inhibitory synapses and many small excitatory ones. Consequently the adult pattern of polyneuronal innervation occurs simultaneously and in toto during embryonic development.

Abstract:Wastewater reclamation in the textile industry has attracted considerable attention. In this study, catalytic ozonation by regenerated granular activated carbon (rGAC) and its combination with biological activated carbon (BAC) was investigated for the reclamation of a real bio-treated dyeing and finishing wastewater (BDFW). Catalytic ozonation by rGAC (O3/rGAC) was 1.6-2.0 times more efficient than ozonation alone for pollutants degradation. Although iron oxide loaded rGAC (rGAC-Fe) improved the performance of catalytic ozonation by 14%-25%, but was labile (<2 days) compared to stable rGAC (>20 days). Catalytic ozonation improved the generation of •OH, contributing 1.1-1.7 times faster of chromophores decomposition and 0.24-0.55 times more increase of biodegradability than ozonation. However, catalytic ozonation increased the acute toxicity of BDFW by two times. The combination of O3/rGAC and BAC can synergistically reduce COD, chromophores, and color in BDFW during 45-day's continuous operation, the improvements than O3/rGAC being 21.0%, 18.8%, and 13.6%, respectively. Moreover, although O3/rGAC of BDFW increased the toxicity from 98.3 to 146.5 μg-HgCl2/L, post BAC significantly reduced the toxicity to 13.1 μg-HgCl2/L. Engineering practice of water reclamation by O3/rGAC-BAC was approved to be feasible based on both the water quality of treated water and the operation cost.

Abstract:Clean water is a necessity for all life to survive and flourish. However, natural waters are being continuously contaminated due to the release of waste streams in water. Hence, it is important to remove pollutants from wastewater to fulfill human needs. Conventional treatment methods are neither efficient nor economical for wastewaters that especially contain refractory toxic pollutants. This requires novel techniques like Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), that may successfully degrade persistent micropollutants more efficiently. In this study, an azo dye Acid Red 1 was removed by three AOPs, namely Photocatalytic oxidation, Ozonation and Photocatalytic Ozonation, by employing heterogenous catalysts. TiO 2 was used as photocatalyst, whereas Fe-Zeolite has been further added as Ozonation catalyst. The study revealed that photocatalysis degraded only 28% Acid red dye after 15 min, whereas for ozonation, the degradation percentage was 95% in same time. In combined photocatalytic ozonation process using TiO 2 , 95% degradation was achieved in just 9 min and treatment time further reduced to 5 min when Fe-zeolite was added. Optimization studies for initial concentration, UV intensity and catalyst loading were performed. Finally, rate constants and Electrical Energy per Order (EEO) values were determined for all AOPs, and mechanism was proposed.
Treatment of textile matrices using Fenton processes: influence of operational parameters on degradation kinetics, ecotoxicity evaluation and application in real wastewater

Abstract:Since conventional processes for treating textile effluents have limitations, this work aimed to investigate the application of advanced oxidation technology in this type of matrix. Initially, for a textile dyes mixture in solution, the photo-Fenton/sunlight process proved to be the most efficient among other systems tested. During the tests it was found that the degradation kinetics depends of the pH and catalyst and oxidant concentrations. After 60 min under optimized conditions, the color was reduced by 98.19%, with 92.52% organic matter conversion. Ecotoxicity tests with the Lactuca Sativa vegetable indicated that the dyes were not totally oxidized to inert compounds, although the treated solution did not cause a significant toxic effect for this species. In the second stage of the research, the photodegradation in real samples of textile wastewater was evaluated. The efficiency of the photo-Fenton/sunlight process was lower than that obtained for the dyes solution, a fact attributed to the greater complexity of the real matrix. However, the data also indicated that the combination of coagulation/flocculation and advanced oxidation processes is the most suitable methodology to reduce the fraction of biodegradable compounds. In summary, research has revealed that photocatalytic degradation of dyes through advanced oxidation is an efficient treatment.

Abstract:Abstract In the past few years, there have been many researches on the use of different types of homogenous catalyst for the degradation of textile wastewater in conventional advanced oxidation processes (AOPs). However, homogenous AOPs suffer from few limitations, including large consumption of chemicals, acidic pH, high cost of hydrogen peroxide, generation of iron sludge, and necessity of post-treatment. Therefore, recently, there have been more researches that focus on improving the performance of conventional AOPs using heterogeneous catalysts such as titanium dioxide, nanomaterials, metal oxides, zeolite, hematite, goethite, magnetite, and activated carbon (AC). Besides, different supports such as AC that have been incorporated with transition metals and clays have been proven to have excellent catalytic activity in AOPs. This paper presents a comprehensive review of advances and prospects of catalytic AOPs for the decontamination of a wide range of synthetic and real textile wastewater. This review provides an up-to-date critical review of the information on the degradation of various textile dyes by a wide range of heterogeneous catalysts and adsorbents. The future challenges of AOPs, including chemical consumption, toxicity assessment, reactor design, and limitation of catalysts, are discussed in this paper. In addition, this paper also discusses the presence of ions, generation of by-products, and industrial applications of AOPs. Special emphasis is given to recent studies and large-scale combination of AOPs for wastewater treatment. This review paper concludes that more studies are needed for the kinetics, reactor design, and modeling of hybrid AOPs and the production of their corresponding intermediate products and secondary pollutants. A better economic model should also be developed to predict the cost of AOPs, as the treatment cost varies with dyes and textile effluents.

Abstract:Comparative removal of COD and color from real textile wastewater using three different electrolytic advanced oxidation processes, namely, electro-Fenton (EF), peroxicoagulation (PC) and pH-regulated peroxicoagulation (PC-pH) processes were analyzed in the present study. Graphite plates were used as both electrodes in the EF process, while an iron plate replaced the graphite anode in the PC and PC-pH processes; moreover, the effect of voltage and solution pH on the performance of these processes was compared. Sludge production was observed in peroxicoagulation processes, indicating that the removal of pollutants took place by both degradation and electrocoagulation processes. The sludge production increased with an increase in solution pH, indicating that the electrocoagulation process dominates the degradation process at higher pH. A reduction of 97% in color was observed in the EF and PC-pH processes, while in the PC process was 82% after 60 min of electrolysis. At the same time, 64%, 70% and 75% of COD was removed by the EF, PC-pH and PC processes, respectively. Moreover, 47.7% of organic pollutant was mineralized via the EF process, and the sludge produced was characterized using the SEM, XRD and FTIR techniques. Furthermore, the sludge produced from the peroxicoagulation process was used as a heterogeneous EF catalyst for the degradation of textile wastewater, and removal of 97% of color, 47% of COD and 33.2% of TOC was observed.

Abstract:Textile industry wastewaters are complex and hazardous because of the variety of dyestuffs and chemicals used in the textile fiber dyeing and finishing processes. Individual wastewater treatment through physical, biological, or chemical methods has its own advantages and disadvantages. Advanced oxidation processes are considered one of the most attractive methods for treating water and wastewater containing toxic and non-biodegradable pollutants. In this study, color and COD removal efficiencies were investigated using advanced oxidation methods Fenton (Fe 2+ /H 2 O 2 ) and ultraviolet/hydrogen peroxide (UV/H 2 O 2 ) processes. The optimum values of operational parameters that affect the Fenton and UV/H 2 O 2 treatment of wastewater were determined, such as iron dosage, hydrogen peroxide dosage, process time, and pH. The optimum conditions for the Fenton process were determined as H 2 O 2 and Fe 2+ concentrations of 1 mg L −1 , process time of 30 min, and pH < 3.5. Under these conditions, removal efficiencies of 87.9%, 96.4%, and 98.4% were obtained for COD, color, and turbidity, respectively. In the UV/H 2 O 2 process, optimum conditions were determined as 30 min of processing time, 1 mg L −1 H 2 O 2 concentration, and pH = 3.5 value. Under these conditions, removal efficiencies of 86.7% and 96.5% were obtained for COD and color. The obtained experimental results were also modeled with the nonlinear regression method. When the results were evaluated, it was determined that advanced oxidation methods were very effective in removing color and COD from textile industry wastewater. In addition, based on the finding, the model presented can be used to predict the COD and color removal based on the dependent variables such as Fe 2+ , pH, time, and H 2 0 2 concentration.

Abstract:The use of Fenton's reagents in destruction of waste material present in Tambla Tributory (Durgapur,India) industrial wastewater has been investigated. Significant drop in COD removal has been observed. Optimisation of process parameters like pH, temperature, H2O2 and FeSO4 has been done. Temperature and pH played a key role in this treatment process, in addition the process initially liberated heat due to reaction between FeSO4 and H2O2. From the experimental results it has been observed that with increasing FeSO4 and H2O2 concentration the degradation of waste increases. At an optimum concentration of FeSO4 (6 gm/l) and H2O2 44.40 gm/l reduced 60% COD, whereas 220gm/l H2O2 was required for 95% COD removal. To reduce cost and the H2O2 concentration for maximum waste degradation, Fenton's oxidation process followed by biochemical treatment was tried at same experimental condition. The treatment enhanced the overall removal efficiency of COD, BOD, salinity and colour significantly. The microbial treatment by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, following Fenton's reagents treatment, showed that the COD reduction has reached to about 97% compared to 60% with Fenton's reagents and 17% with T. ferrooxidans alone in 24h, showing the synergistic effect. Thus the combined treatment results indicate the possibility to minimize the Fenton's reagents without compromising the efficiency of the process but ultimately reducing the overall treatment cost. This study seems to be very much important and economical by reducing the required H2O2 amount to about five times using a suitable micro-organism. This hybrid treatment system showed 97% COD reduction can be achieved within two days.

Abstract:Per capita average annual freshwater availability is gradually reduced due to increasing population, urbanization and affluent lifestyles. Hence, management of wastewater is of great concern. The wastewater from different industries can be treated by various conventional treatment methods but these conventional treatment technologies seem to be ineffective for the complete removal of pollutants especially refractory organic compounds that are not readily biodegradable in nature. Detergents, detergent additives, sequestering agents like EDTA, Pesticides, Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, etc. are some of the recalcitrant organic compounds found in the wastewater. One of the treatment technologies for the removal of recalcitrant organic compounds is Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP). The production of hydroxyl free radical is the main mechanism for the AOP. AOP is a promising technology for the treatment of refractory organic compounds due to its low oxidation selectivity and high reactivity of the radical. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), Ozonation, Ultra-violet (UV) radiation, H2O2/UV process and Fenton’s reaction are extensively used for the removal of refractory organic compounds thus reducing Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), Total Organic Carbon (TOC), phenolic compounds, dyes etc. to great extent. From the studies, we found that Fenton’s reagents appear to be most economically practical AOP systems for almost all industries with respect to high pollutant removal efficiency and it is also economical. From the energy point of view, the ozone based process proves to be more efficient but it is costlier than the Fenton’s process.

Abstract:A simple process of synthesizing coated filter element substrates (FES) containing zinc oxide (ZnO) nanorods and ZnO graphene-oxide nanocomposite for a pilot-scale industrial dye-effluent treatment plant is proposed. This work reports a detailed analysis of the photocatalysis mechanism on real industrial effluent streams containing a mixture of dyes. The analysis is very relevant for conducting advanced oxidation process-assisted effluent remediation at a field-level treatment operation. Estimation of the dye concentration shows nearly complete (≥98%) degradation from an initial dye sample concentration. A detailed study for the analysis of the initial reactive dyes and their degradation products was performed for quantification and identification of the degradation products through various spectral techniques. A design of the remediation mechanism through degradation pathways is proposed for characterizing the organic compounds in the degraded dye products. A regeneration and reusability study was performed on the FES presenting the durability of the FES-designed synthesis process originally for 11 cycles and regenerated FES for six cycles for achieving a threshold of 60% degradation efficiency. The experimental results demonstrate the efficacy of FES through the designed immobilized approach for the complete remediation of textile dye effluents for a 4 h treatment plant process and the consistent operability of the FES for the combined dye wastewater treatment operations.

Abstract:Abstract The Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) are promising environmentally friendly technologies for the treatment of wastewater containing organic pollutants in general and particularly dyes. The aim of this work is to determine which of the AOP processes based on the Fenton reaction is more effective in degrading the methyl orange (MO) dye. The comparative study of the Fenton, photo-Fenton (PF) and electro-Fenton (EF) processes has shown that electro-Fenton is the most efficient method for oxidizing Methyl Orange. The evolution of organic matter degradation was followed by absorbance (discoloration) and COD (mineralization) measurements. The kinetics of the MO degradation by the electro-Fenton process is very rapid and the OM degradation rate reached 90.87% after 5 min. The influence of some parameters such as the concentration of the catalyst (Fe (II)), the concentration of MO, the current density, the nature and the concentration of supporting electrolyte was investigated. The results showed that the degradation rate increases with the increase in the applied current density and the concentration of the supporting electrolyte. The study of the concentration effect on the rate degradation revealed optimal values for the concentrations 2.10 −5 M and 75 mg L −1 of Fe (II) and MO respectively.

Abstract:The present study aims to characterize three industrial wastewater samples collected from petrochemical, food and beet sugar industries to determine the pollution potential and select the appropriate pre-treatment approach. According to the biodegradability profile of the multi-sourced mixed (composite) sample, the advanced oxidation process (AOPs) namely, Fenton (F) and Electro-Fenton (EF) were adopted as pre-treatment techniques and the operating parameters such as time, type of electrodes, pH, voltage, iron and H 2 O 2 concentrations were critically examined. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) was conducted to compare the performance efficiency of F& EF AOPs for treating the composite samples and the total operating costs for both approaches were assessed. The results revealed that, the initial values of the composite sample were 7.11, 19.2, 32.6, 19.3, 937, 1512, 860, 3.9, 2110 and 2.34 for pH, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Electrical Conductivity (EC), Salinity, BOD, COD, Oil and grease (O&G), Total Phosphorous (TP), Total Suspended Solids (TSS) and Total Kjeldahl Nitrogen (TKN), respectively. In addition, EF process achieved more removal efficiency for COD, O&G, BOD, TSS, and TKN (84.3%, 69%, 85%, 72% and 71.27%) compared to Fenton which displayed 78.43%, 66%, 69%, 70.1%, and 61%, respectively. Moreover, there are statistically significant differences ( p < 0.05) between the initial and final (pretreated) values of the composite industrial wastewater for the addressed parameters and EF was significantly ( p < 0.05) more effective than F process. The total operating costs were 3.117 and 2.063$ for F and EF, respectively, which confirmed that EF is more efficient and cost effective than F process. It was concluded that electro-Fenton process is favorable, eco-friendly and cost-effective option for pretreating real complicated multi-sourced industrial wastewater. The present study demonstrated a new avenue for achieving efficient management of industrial wastewater generated from similar industries.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are the technologies that generally use the hydroxyl radicals, the ultimate oxidant for the remediation of organic contaminants in wastewater. These are highly effective novel methods speeding up the oxidation process. AOPs can combine with Fenton (H2O2/Fe2+), photo-Fenton (H2O2/UV/Fe2+), and electro-Fenton, heterogeneous photooxidation using titanium dioxide (TiO2/hv), singlet molecular oxygen process, singlet oxygen-photo-Fenton process, sonolysis, peroxidation combined with ultraviolet light (H2O2/UV), UV alone, UV/O3, UV/S2O8-2, UV/Chlorine, peroxone (O3/H2O2), peroxone combined with ultraviolet light (O3/H2O2/UV), O3/UV system, O3/TiO2/ H2O2 and O3/TiO2/Electron beam irradiation. Ozone (O3), catalyst or ultraviolet (UV) irradiation to offer a powerful treatment processes of wastewater. Future research should be focused on enhancing the properties of heterogeneous catalysts in AOPs. This review report of different AOPs utilized for the removal of various phenolic compounds and textile dyes in wastewater.

Abstract:This study aims to investigate the feasibility of three Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs), Electrocoagulation (EC), ozonation and Fenton's oxidation for the treatment of real phenalkamine condensate. Three methods were compared based on COD removal efficiency. Phenalkamines are the Mannich reaction product of cardanol, formaldehyde, and amines. These are widely used in coatings for marine and offshore constructions and as curing agents in industrial adhesives. Cardanol is a derivative obtained by thermal treatment of cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL). The effluent from the cashew nut industry consists of phenolic compounds of high persistence, and they are potentially carcinogenic and mutagenic. The phenalkamine condensate has high pH, high chemical oxygen demand (COD). Fenton oxidation showed the highest COD removal efficiency, with maximum efficiency of 80 % and 94 % achieved after the first stage and five stage Fenton's oxidation respectively at optimized operating conditions. In comparison, EC process and ozonation resulted maximum COD removal efficiency of 54.26 % and 30.64 % respectively at optimum reaction conditions. This study revealed that Fenton's oxidation is the most effective method for the treatment of phenalkamine condensate.

Abstract:Methyldopa is a widely used antihypertensive medicine. The wastewater from methyldopa production is of high chroma, high concentration of organic pollutants and resistance to biodegradation. The processes of Fenton oxidation-PAM flocculation-A/O (anoxic and aerobic biodegradation) have been applied to treat the wastewater. The experimental results show that the optimized conditions for Fenton oxidation treatment of the wastewater are:pH 5.0,n(Fe2+) ∶ n(H2O2) = 1 ∶ 4,concentration of H2O2 5.0 g/L,concentration of FeSO4·7H2O 10.2 g/L and reaction time 2.0 h. The optimized conditions for PAM flocculation of the wastewater are:pH 7.0,concentration of PAM 16.7 mg/L. After the Fenton oxidation - PAM flocculation treatment,CODCr removal efficiency and the decoloration rate are 74% and 95% respectively. The ratio of BOD5/CODCr increases from 0.17 to 0.38. The biodegradability of the wastewater is significantly improved after Fenton oxidation treatment. Then,the A/O processes are conducted for further treatment,70% - 80% CODCr could be removed again.
