Abstract:This research introduces an innovative approach to the design and simulation of bio-based laminated structures, specifically focusing on glue-laminated bamboo (glubam) used in roof trusses. Our study fills a critical gap by investigating the mechanical behaviors of bolted connections in bamboo-based structures, which have not been comprehensively studied before. We employ a dual-phase methodology: initially, cyclic tests on bolted steel to glubam joints assess their hysteretic behavior, followed by tests on glubam planar roof trusses to evaluate structural responses under practical conditions. Our novel contribution is the development of a simplified mechanical-based hysteretic model, incorporating connector and spring elements in series or parallel within the ABAQUS software. This model significantly improves on existing models by allowing for initial calibration through a parallel genetic algorithm (PGA), enhancing both accuracy and efficiency. Subsequent incorporation of this model into the simulation of truss joints enabled the creation of an advanced hybrid roof truss model within ABAQUS. The final stage of our research demonstrates the application of a PGA-based model-updating framework, which substantially increases the model’s predictive accuracy. This work not only advances the understanding of structural behavior in bio-based construction materials but also introduces a robust framework for model updating that can be applied to other engineering simulations, contributing to more sustainable and resource-efficient construction practices.
Machine Learning and Materials Informatics Approaches for Predicting Transverse Mechanical Properties of Unidirectional CFRP Composites with Microvoids

Abstract:The mechanical properties of composites are traditionally measured using numerical and experimental approaches, which impede the innovation of materials due to the cost, time, or effort involved. This study for the first time develops a machine learning-assisted model, which aims at predicting the transverse mechanical properties of unidirectional (UD) carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites with microvoids. To this end, the stochastic microstructures are generated by random sequential expansion (RSE) and hard-core model. And the transverse elastic modulus, transverse tensile strength and transverse compressive strength are computed by micromechanics-based finite element (FE) method. Then, the reduced order representation of microstructures is determined using 2-point spatial correlations and principal component analysis (PCA). Finally, a genetic algorithm (GA) optimized back propagation (BP) neural network is implemented to capture the potential nonlinear relationship between microstructure and transverse mechanical properties. The presented data-driven techniques can reproduce the FE simulation results with an R-value of 0.89 or greater. The excellent agreement between the predicted results and test datasets verifies the successful application of data science methodologies in elucidating the microstructure-property linkages of UD-CFRP composites with microvoids, and thus provides a promising tool for accelerating the smart design and optimization of composites.
Experimental Investigation on Strength and Stiffness Properties of Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL)

Abstract:This study presents a testing campaign aimed at evaluating the strength and stiffness properties of laminated veneer lumber (LVL) specimens. LVL is an engineered wood product composed of thin glued wood veneers whose use in construction for structural applications has increased due to its sustainability and enhanced mechanical performance. Despite LVL's growing popularity, there is a lack of comprehensive information regarding stress-strain responses, failure modes, and the full set of strength and stiffness properties. These are particularly essential when LVL is employed in pure timber structures or composite systems such as steel-timber or timber-concrete load-bearing elements. This research aims to bridge this knowledge gap, focusing on crossbanded LVL panels, known as LVL-C, crafted from Scandinavian spruce wood, which is an LVL product with 20% of crossbanded veneers. The study explores LVL-C mechanical behavior in three primary orthogonal directions: longitudinal, tangential, and radial. A series of mechanical tests, including compression, tension, shear, and bending, was conducted to provide a thorough assessment of the material's performance. In compression tests, different behaviors were observed in the three directions, with the longitudinal direction exhibiting the highest stiffness and strength. Tensile tests revealed unique stress-strain responses in each direction, with gradual tension failures. Shear tests showcased varying shear stress-strain patterns and failure modes, while bending tests exhibited significant strength and stiffness values in flatwise bending parallel to the grain and flatwise bending perpendicular to the grain. This paper summarizes the comprehensive testing results and discusses the obtained strength and stiffness properties of LVL-C panels, providing valuable insights into their mechanical behavior for engineering applications.

Abstract:Engineered wood or mass timber has gained increasing popularity in building construction, and layered engineered wood is a major category of mass timber design since it enables manufacturing structural members with a wide range of geometry. Thus, there is a potential rising demand for structural health monitoring on engineered wood-based structural members and buildings. This study investigates the feasibility of using an important and practical acoustic emission (AE) method for damage localization, specifically two-dimensional (2D) AE source localization, in a representative layered engineered wood sample, namely laminated veneer lumber (LVL) plate. While 2D AE source localization is generally straightforward in isotropic materials, the problem becomes challenging for anisotropic materials with angle-dependent wave velocities. It is even more complicated if heterogeneity involves, which turns out to be the case for layered engineered wood. In this study, we rely on the AE feature of difference in time of arrival (dTOA) and develop three methods to address the challenges of 2D AE source localization raised by anisotropy and heterogeneity in an LVL plate. The benchmark velocity profile method (VPM) is first implemented in an LVL plate. With knowledge of the angle-dependent velocity, the source location predictions by the VPM are generally erroneous even with predicted source location outside of the region of interest. Furthermore, the general regression neural network (GRNN) is developed using different combinations of dTOA components, resulting in improved prediction performance. Third, the Gaussian process regression (GPR) is developed by maximizing the marginal likelihood of the training dataset. Moreover, to lessen the computation burden, the lower bound of the logarithm likelihood of the whole models is derived and decomposed through Jensen’s inequality and Bayes’ theorem, providing the theoretical background for training models with different combinations of dTOAs individually.

Abstract:Laminated rocks, which are composed of two types of laminae (referred to as ‘strong lamina’ (SL) and ‘weak lamina’ (WL)), are prevalent in rock engineering construction. Determining their mechanical parameters is crucial, yet obtaining them separately through conventional physical experiments is challenging. While specialized techniques like Nano-indentation testing can be employed, they are often costly (Li et al., Mar Pet Geol 143:105740, 2022), and the relationship between these test results and macroscopic mechanical properties remains uncertain. In this study, a method for estimating the mechanical parameters of SL and WL based on uniaxial tests is proposed. The elastic moduli and Poisson ratios for both materials are derived first, followed by equations estimating their compression and tensile strengths. The internal friction angles and cohesive forces are obtained through correlations of rock mechanics parameters. Two numerical simulations were conducted and compared to physical tests, and the comparison results show that the proposed method is validated. A necessary evaluation method and suggestions for further parameter adjustments are provided. Overall, this method offers significant guidance for engineering projects involving laminated rocks and is worth popularizing.
Modeling on the Effect of Automated Fiber Placement Induced Gaps in Curved Composite Laminates

Abstract:Automated placement technology has been widely used due to its excellent processing adaptability for large composite components with complex geometric structures. Whereas, it still poses challenges to study the effect of manufactured gaps induced by automated placement on curved composite parts. This study proposes a new geometric reconstruction approach based on consolidation and sweeping formation to model manufactured gaps. Additionally, a mechanical model incorporating the reconstructed geometry and the cohesive layer method is established to predict the physical behaviors of curved laminates. The micrograph of automated placementinduced gaps with 90 degrees orientation was used to verify the rationality of the geometric reconstruction approach of gaps forming in the preparation process of composite materials. According to predictions of the proposed mechanical model, the effect of - 45 degrees oriented gap defects on curved laminates was validated via four-point bending tests that confirmed alignment between predictions and experimental results for peak load, crack propagation, and failure patterns. Experimental results show that due to the differences in spatial local geometric features, orientations of gap defects would reduce the bending strength to different degrees and significantly affect the failure pattern of curved laminates. Furthermore, curved laminates with wider gaps experience a more considerable reduction in load-bearing capacity.
A nondestructive guided wave propagation method for the characterization of moisture-dependent viscoelastic properties of wood materials

Abstract:The in-situ monitoring and characterization of the mechanical properties of wood and timber materials is of great importance due to their broad structural applications. The purpose of this study was to propose a nondestructive method to assess the moisture-dependent viscoelastic behavior of structural wood using the guided Lamb wave propagation. Twelve green poplar wood specimens with different moisture content (MC) underwent the Lamb wave propagation tests and the wave characteristics were acquired. The viscoelastic properties of the wood specimens, including the shear storage and shear loss moduli and the loss factor, were then estimated through the solution of the corresponding inverse Lamb wave propagation problem using the experimentally measured Lamb wave characteristics. The structural stiffness and damping of wood specimens were affected by their MC, as the Lamb wave amplitude and velocity significantly decreased with MC. While the shear storage modulus decreased with MC, the shear loss modulus and loss factor increased with MC, resulting in a higher viscoelastic behavior. The loss factor of the wood specimens was estimated to be between 5.88% and 8.49% for different classes of MC, showing an increase of 44% with MC. The Lamb wave propagation method offers a strong tool for nondestructive characterization of the viscoelastic properties of wood materials and structures over a broad MC range. Wood materials show a significant viscoelastic behavior which is highly impacted by their MC. The loss factor can play an important role in the characterization and classification of structural wood and timber with different MC.

Abstract:This paper presents a numerical approach to assess efficiently the vibration performance of adhesive-free engineered wood products assembled through compressed wood dowels. Predictive finite element models are obtained by applying the Verification and Validation methodology. The models are first developed using solid elements. Then, solid-beam and solid-shell approaches based on standard solid elements are developed with first-order or higher-order theories. Beam or shell kinematic assumptions are applied throughout the cross-section of the dowels and through the thickness of the layers. From a numerical point of view, a modification of the system of algebraic equations, based on the concept of independent and dependent nodes, is developed. Dependent nodes are eliminated, resulting in a significant reduction in the number of degrees of freedom and floating-point operations. The methodology is evaluated for the calculation of frequencies and mode shapes of adhesive-free laminated timber beams and timber panels with a mix of solid elements, solid-shell and solid-beam approaches. The study highlights the efficiency of the proposed modelling approach in terms of quality of results and model size reduction.

Abstract:Cross-laminated timber (CLT) is a new generation of engineered wood product developed initially in Europe and has been used in North America for various applications. CLT is composed of at least three layers of lumber boards stacked crosswise in orthogonally alternating orientation to the adjacent layers. CLT has been gaining popularity and increasing application areas in the construction industry, such as building systems, mats for construction and temporary road applications as well as temporary bridges. It is especially identified as the prevailing material in modular construction for the future building industry. However, CLT as a relatively new structural material has limited studies related to their durability and long-term performance. Moreover, nondestructive evaluation methods to understand their mechanical behavior after exposure to harsh environment are lacking. This paper contributes to the development of a rapid nondestructive evaluation method to assess the mechanical properties using transverse vibration method and ultrasonic testing. The free vibration response triggered by the impulse excitation is captured using contact accelerometer and non-contact laser Doppler vibrometer (LDV). The LDV measurement is proven to respond similar to conventional accelerometers but more convenient as a rapid assessment method. While the longitudinal wave speed is measured by ultrasonic testing (UT) in a through-transmission mode, the modulus of elasticity was calculated in terms of measured wave speed. By investigating the different structural states and dimensions of CLT samples, the laboratory and the manufacturing facility, the influences of aging on effective dynamic modulus of elasticity (MOE) and damping are shown. The numerical and experimental results indicate the increase in moisture content decreases the fundamental frequency. Therefore, moisture content should be measured in order to examine the coupled effects of moisture content and aging on the fundamental frequency. The damping ratio extracted using half-power bandwidth method is shown as an additional information related to the moisture content. The non-contact transverse vibration method and UT are shown as an efficient nondestructive evaluation method for assessing the CLT structural state right after the manufacturing as a quality assurance method or after their service in field as a diagnostic tool.

Abstract:Among the many benefits of implementing numerical analysis on real objects, economic and environmental considerations are likely the most important ones. Nonetheless, it is also crucial to constrain the duration and space necessary for conducting experimental investigations. Although these benefits are clear, the applicability of such models must be appropriately verified. This research subjected validation of numerical models depicting the behavior of unstrengthened and strengthened laminated veneer lumber (LVL) beams. As a reinforcement, a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheet and laminates were used. Experiments were conducted on full-scale members within the framework of the so-called four-point bending testing method. Numerical simulations were performed using the Abaqus software. Two types of material models were examined for laminated veneer lumber: linearly elastic and linearly elastic–perfectly plastic with Hill's yield criterion. A distinction was made in the material properties of carbon composites based on their location on the height of the cross-section. The outlined numerical models accurately depict the behavior of real structural elements. The precision of predicting load-bearing capacity amounts to a few percent for strengthened beams and a maximum of eleven percent for unstrengthened beams. The relative deviation between numerical and experimental values of bending stiffness was at a maximum of seven percent. Applying the elastic–plastic model enables accurate representation of the load versus deflection relation and the distribution of stress and deformation of strengthened beams. Based on the findings, directives were provided for further optimization of the positioning of composite reinforcement along the span of the beam. Reinforcement design of existing laminated veneer lumber members can be made using presented methodology.

Experimental Study On Flexural Behavior Of Glulam And Laminated Veneer Lumber Beams

Abstract:Poplar is one of the main fast-growing species in China. In this study, the Italian poplar is used in the manufacturing of engineered wood materials, such as glued laminated timber (glulam), laminated veneer lumber (LVL), etc. The overall objective is to take full advantage of the fast-growing species in China and make it applicable to modern timber structures. Firstly, through a series of material mechanical testing, the main physical and mechanical behavior of glulam and LVL were presented. Based on this, experimental study on a total of 31 engineered wood beams was developed and the failure modes and failure mechanism were analyzed in this paper. Then the flexural behaviors, which include load carrying capacity and bending stiffness, were investigated and made a detailed comparison among them. Finally, the influences of lamination combination, load direction, veneer thickness (for LVL members), and beam sizes upon the flexural behaviors of engineered wood beams were discussed. Experimental results have shown that structural behaviors of engineered wood beams were much better than those of sawn beams made from ordinary structural timber. For example, the ultimate load of poplar engineered wood beams exceeds that of sawn Mongolian Scotch pine (MSP) beams by 39.0%similar to 90.0%, while bending stiffness increased by 35.0%similar to 45.0%. When combining LVL with glulam in the beams, they would produce better structural performance. Also the average strain of beam cross-section showed a linear distribution, and the ultimate tensile strain of the beams is 0.006 while the maximum compressive strain of the beams is about 0.009. Moreover, the influences of lamination combination and beam sizes on the beam's flexural behavior are obvious. From this study, it shows that engineered wood materials have a good prospect in building structures of China.
Full elastic properties characterization of wood by ultrasound using a single sample

Abstract:This paper focuses on the characterization of the three-dimensional elastic properties of wood materials using the propagation velocity of ultrasonic waves in the context of the inspection and diagnosis of timber structures. The scientific innovation consists in exploiting only the velocities of the compression ( P ) waves and using a single sample. From a three-dimensional formulation of Hankinson and an analytical development which allows to define the relations between the properties of elasticity and the velocities of ultrasonic waves, the twelve elastic constants are determined by means of an optimization procedure. The experimental validation on a Douglas fir cube allows to have the three moduli of elasticity , the three shear moduli and the six Poisson's ratios . The longitudinal modulus is more than eight times greater than the radial modulus , which is more than two and a half times greater than the tangential modulus . For the shear moduli, we obtain . The Poisson's ratios meet the requirements of energy deformation positivity and stiffness matrix inversion. The values of the elastic constants obtained are in line with those from the literature.

Compressive Mechanical Properties of Larch Wood in Different Grain Orientations

Abstract:As a green and low-carbon natural polymer material, wood has always been popular in engineering applications owing to its excellent physical and mechanical properties. In this study, compression tests in conjunction with in situ test methods (DIC method) were used to investigate the compression mechanism of wood samples in the longitudinal, radial, and tangential directions. The macroscopic failure modes, energy dissipation results, and variations in the strain field were analyzed. The results showed that the load–displacement curve in each grain orientation included three stages: an elasticity stage, yield stage, and strengthening stage. Both the compressive strength and elastic modulus in the longitudinal direction were significantly higher than those in the radial and tangential directions, but there was no significant difference between the radial and tangential directions. Specimens in the longitudinal direction mainly presented fiber buckling, fiber shear slippage, and fiber fracture failure; in radial directions mainly presented compression compaction of the fiber cells; and in the tangential directions presented buckling and shear failure of the laminar layers. The energy absorption in the longitudinal direction was better than in the other directions. The strain changed significantly in the loading direction in the elastic stage while the shear strain changed remarkably in the yield stage in each grain orientation. In this paper, the compression mechanical properties of larch wood in different grain orientations were studied to provide a reference for its safe application in engineering.

WD-1D-VGG19-FEA: An Efficient Wood Defect Elastic Modulus Predictive Model

Abstract:As a mature non-destructive testing technology, near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy can effectively identify and distinguish the structural characteristics of wood. The Wood Defect One-Dimensional Visual Geometry Group 19-Finite Element Analysis (WD-1D-VGG19-FEA) algorithm is used in this study. 1D-VGG19 classifies the near-infrared spectroscopy data to determine the knot area, fiber deviation area, transition area, and net wood area of the solid wood board surface and generates a two-dimensional image of the board surface through inversion. Then, the nonlinear three-dimensional model of wood with defects was established by using the inverse image, and the finite element analysis was carried out to predict the elastic modulus of wood. In the experiment, 270 points were selected from each of the four regions of the wood, totaling 1080 sets of near-infrared data, and the 1D-VGG19 model was used for classification. The results showed that the identification accuracy of the knot area was 95.1%, the fiber deviation area was 92.7%, the transition area was 90.2%, the net wood area was 100%, and the average accuracy was 94.5%. The error range of the elastic modulus prediction of the three-dimensional model established by the VGG19 classification model in the finite element analysis is between 2% and 10%, the root mean square error (RMSE) is about 598. 2, and the coefficient of determination (R2) is 0. 91. This study shows that the combination of the VGG19 algorithm and finite element analysis can accurately describe the nonlinear defect morphology of wood, thus establishing a more accurate prediction model of wood mechanical properties to maximize the use of wood mechanical properties.

Effect of Structural Design on the Pore Structure, Water Resistance, and Mechanical Properties of Engineered Wood/Bamboo Laminated Composites

Abstract:An important principle in rational manufacturing design is matching the properties of composites to their intended uses. Herein, six laminated composites (LCs) were manufactured using fibrous moso bamboo and poplar veneer units, and their pore structure, water resistance, and mechanical properties were evaluated. The LC density (640–1290 kg/m3) increased significantly with increasing bamboo veneer unit content. The LC surface texture and roughness depended on the density and type of surface layer. With increasing LC density, the water absorption rate (WAR), width swelling rate (WSR), and thickness swelling rate (TSR) decreased exponentially and the mechanical properties increased linearly. This behavior was closely related to the changes in pore structure caused by density. Notably, the water resistance and mechanical properties of the LCs with densities higher than 910 kg/m3 were superior to the highest levels specified in GB/T 20241–2006 for ''laminated veneer lumber'' and GB/T 30364–2013 for "bamboo scrimber flooring". Thus, these engineered materials are promising for outdoor structures and flooring.

Abstract:Due to the high cost of laboratory testing, many researchers are considering developing methods to predict the behavior of unreinforced and reinforced wood beams. This work aims to create either numerical or analytical models useful for extrapolating already conducted tests to other schemes/materials used as reinforcement. In the case of timber structures, due to the complexity of timber, this task is difficult. The first part of the article presents an analysis of the suitability of using a simplified mathematical model based on the equivalent cross-section method to describe the behavior of unreinforced and reinforced with carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite full-size laminated veneer lumber (LVL) beams. The theoretical results were compared with the results of conducted experimental tests. The scope of the analysis includes the estimation of modulus of rupture, bending stiffness, and determination of the neutral axis position. The equivalent cross-section method showed good agreement in determining the bending stiffness and neutral axis position of the strengthened sections. However, the suitability of using the equivalent cross-section method to estimate the load-carrying capacity of a cross-section reinforced with fiber composites still needs to be confirmed, which, according to the authors, is due to the differences between the assumed (linear) and actual (nonlinear) strain distribution in the compression zone. The second part uses the equivalent cross-section method to estimate the predicted bending stiffness of LVL beams strengthened with aramid-fibre-reinforced polymer (AFRP), glass-fibre-reinforced polymer (GFRP), and ultra-high modulus carbon-fibre-reinforced polymer (CFRP UHM) sheets. Study On Material And Structural Behaviors Of Engineered Wood Composite Beams

Abstract:Engineered wood composites (EWC) are advanced structural materials. Modern technique of wood processing is introduced into wood composites, and then the application field is widely extended for wood as well as the physical and mechanical properties of wood are greatly improved. Nowadays EWC mainly include glued laminated timber (glulam) and laminated veneer lumber (LVL). Their processing technique and some material properties are reported in this paper. Based on a series of material mechanical testing and beam testing, the physical and mechanical properties of materials and flexural behavior of the test beams were obtained. Failure modes and failure mechanism of poplar glulam beams and poplar LVL beams are discussed. Also the flexural behavior are studied and then compared with some sawn timber beams. The experimental results have shown that structural behaviors of engineered wood composite beams are much better than those of sawn beams like Mongolian Scotch (MS) pine beams. According to the test data, the load-deflection curves and the strain profile at midspan are presented and the comparison of them are carried out. Size effect upon binding strength is also reported and some design proposals are put forward. Furthermore, some further study subjects, such as long-term performance, connection methods, appropriate structural style, and reinforcing methods of wood material, are indicated.

Abstract:Blood represents a very important biological fluid and has been the target of continuous and extensive research for diagnostic, or health and drug monitoring reasons. Recently, metabonomics/metabolomics have emerged as a new and promising 'omics' platform that shows potential in biomarker discovery, especially in areas such as disease diagnosis, assessment of drug efficacy or toxicity. Blood is collected in various establishments in conditions that are not standardized. Next, the samples are prepared and analyzed using different methodologies or tools. When targeted analysis of key molecules (e.g., a drug or its metabolite[s]) is the aim, enforcement of certain measures or additional analyses may correct and harmonize these discrepancies. In omics fields such as those performed by holistic analytical approaches, no such rules or tools are available. As a result, comparison or correlation of results or data fusion becomes impractical. However, it becomes evident that such obstacles should be overcome in the near future to allow for large-scale studies that involve the assaying of samples from hundreds of individuals. In this case the effect of sample handling and preparation becomes very serious, in order to avoid wasting months of work from experts and expensive instrument time. The present review aims to cover the different methodologies applied to the pretreatment of blood prior to LC-MS metabolomic/metabonomic studies. The article tries to critically compare the methods and highlight issues that need to be addressed.
Finite Element Modeling of the Dynamic Response of Plywood

Abstract:Modeling the dynamic properties of wood and wood-based composites is a challenging task due to naturally growing structure and moisture-dependent material properties. This paper presents the finite element modeling of plywood panels' dynamic properties. Two panels differing in thickness were analyzed: (i) 18 mm and (ii) 27 mm. The developed models consisted of individual layers of wood, which were discretized using three-dimensional finite elements formulated using an orthotropic material model. The models were subjected to an updating procedure based on experimentally determined frequency response functions. As a result of a model updating relative errors for natural frequencies obtained numerically and experimentally were not exceeding 2.0%, on average 0.7% for 18 mm thick panel and not exceeding 2.6%, on average 1.5% for 27 mm thick panel. To prove the utility of the method and at the same time to validate it, a model of a cabinet was built, which was then subjected to experimental verification. In this case, average relative differences for natural frequencies of 6.6% were obtained.

Abstract:To support more sustainable construction, this paper experimentally investigates the cyclic behavior of laminated timber (Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL)) and glubam (Glue Laminated Bamboo) connections with slotted-in steel plates in terms of experimental test, numerical simulations and parameter identification. Experimental tests included eight different configurations: two materials (LVL and glubam), two bolt diameters (8 and 10 mm), and one or two bolts. Two different cyclic-loading protocols were applied for each type of connection: only tension and tension/compression. The observed behavior is then compared to a finite element model developed in OpenSeesPy, which takes into account factors such as sliding, contact, pinching, cyclic stiffness, and strength degradation. To identify the best set of parameters for the model, three different approaches are considered: genetic algorithm, fast deterministic neural network, and probabilistic Bayesian method. First, the model identification is carried out by means of a genetic algorithm-based optimization. The parameter-identification results are evaluated in terms of elastic stiffness, yielding point, and ductility. Next, a sensitivity analysis is performed to determine the significance of the parameters, and an innovative approach combining neural network and sensitivity analysis is proposed for fast and preliminary parameter identification. Then, probabilistic Bayesian identification is employed to calculate the posterior distribution of the model parameters identified and the confidence bounds of the estimated response. Finally, different model identification parameters are compared and suggestions for algorithm selection are provided.
