Abstract:TiO2 is the most photoactive material because of its superstrong photooxidizing ability, and TiO2 photocatalysis has been widely applied in sustainable water treatment and environmental remediation. However, poor sunlight or visible-light harvesting efficiency and fast recombination rate of the photogenerated charge carriers severely limit the practical applications of TiO2. To overcome these problems, the present work demonstrates a facile in-situ co-condensation method combined with hydrothermal treatment to prepare a series of graphitized carbon/TiO2 composite photocatalysts, and anatase TiO2 phase and pi-pi-conjugated polycyclic aromatic carbon structure are created simultaneously. As-prepared TiO2/C composites exhibit remarkably high visible-light photocatalytic activity in the degradation of aqueous emerging phenolic pollutants, acetaminophen (APAP) and methylparaben (MPB), and apparent rate constant of the TiO2/C composite with carbon doping level of 10.3% for APAP and MPB removal is 7.6 and 2.8 times higher than that of bare TiO2, and 6.2 and 2.6 times higher than that of Degussa P25 TiO2. Based on the results of photoelectrochemical experiments, indirect chemical probe measurements, and ESR spectroscopy, it is verified that doping TiO2 with graphitized carbon is responsible for this enhanced photocatalytic activity, which renders the improved visible-light harvesting ability, the accelerated separation of the photogenerated charge carriers, and enlarged BET surface areas. Through analyzing the intermediates yielded in the photodegradation process, the pathway of visible-light photocatalytic degradation of APAP and MPB over the TiO2/C composite is proposed. Photocatalytic Degradation of 2,4-Dichlorophenol by TiO2 Intercalated Talc Nanocomposite

Abstract:Novel nanocomposites have been prepared by intercalating TiO2 nanoparticles into talc. The nanocomposites have been verified by X-ray diffraction (XRD) from the appearance of a characteristic diffraction peak of TiO2. Thermal behavior of the prepared samples is examined by thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS), which have shown no TiO2 particles on the surface of the talc. The TiO2 particles are found in the layers of talc by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method, which have shown the increase of specific surface areas and total pore volumes and the decline of average pore diameters. As the strong adsorption ability of talc can intensify the power of photon absorption and capture-recombination carriers, more than 99.5% of 2,4-dichlorophenol can be degraded in 1h by the nanocomposite under an ultraviolet lamp in neutral solution and room temperature after reaching adsorption equilibrium, and the result of adsorbance is in accord with the first-order kinetic. The degradation rate was maintained at about 99% after 20 times. Therefore, the prepared talc/TiO2 nanocomposite is an efficient, stable, and recyclable material for wastewater treatment.
Photocatalytic degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid by electrospun TiO2 nanofibres synthesised from two different titanium molecular precursors

Abstract:The evaluation of the photocatalytic properties of electrospun TiO2 nanofibres (TiO2-NFs) synthesised in the same experimental conditions using two distinct precursors, tetraisopropyl orthotitanate (TTIP) and tetrabutyl orthotitanate (TNBT), with morphology and crystalline structure controlled by annealing at 460 °C for 3 h is presented. The presence of circular-shaped TiO2-NFs was corroborated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). By using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the chemical binding energies and their interactions of the TiO2 with the different incorporated impurities were determined; the most intense photoelectronic transitions of Ti 2p3/2 (458.39 eV), O 1 s (529.65 eV) and C 1 s (284.51 eV) were detected for TTIP and slightly blue-shifted for TNBT. By using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), the chemical element percentages in TiO2 were determined. Using X-ray diffraction, it was found that the annealed electrospun TiO2-NFs presented the anatase crystalline phase and confirmed by Raman scattering. Bandgap energies were determined by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy at room temperature. The photocatalytic degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) herbicide under exposure to ultraviolet light was studied using the TiO2-NFs obtained with the two molecular precursors. The results showed that the catalyst, prepared with the TTIP precursor, turned out to be the one that presented the highest photocatalytic activity with a half-life time (t1/2) of 28 min and a degradation percentage of 93%. The total organic carbon (TOC) in the solutions resulting from the 2,4-D degradation by the TiO2-NFs was measured, which showed a TOC removal of 50.67% for the TTIP sample and 36.14% for the TNBT sample. Finally, by using FTIR spectroscopy, the final chemical compounds of the degradation were identified as H2O and CO2.
Titanium dioxide-mediated photocatalysed degradation of few selected organic pollutants in aqueous suspensions

Abstract:The photocatalytic degradation of maleic hydrazide (1), propham (2), tebuthiuron (3), propachlor (4), chlortoluron (5), thiram (6), phenoxyacetic acid (7), 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy acetic acid (8), 4-chlorophenoxy acetic acid (9), uracil (10), 5-bromouracil (11) and bromothymol blue (12) have been investigated in aqueous suspensions of titanium dioxide (TiO2) under a variety of conditions. The degradation was studied by monitoring the change in substrate concentration employing UV spectroscopic analysis technique and depletion in total organic carbon (TOC) content as a function of irradiation time. The degradation kinetics of the compounds were investigated under different conditions, such as types of TiO2, pH, catalyst concentration, substrate concentration, temperature and in the presence of different electron acceptors, such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), potassium persulphate (K2S2O8), ammonium persulphate (NH4)2S2O8 and potassium bromate (KBrO3) besides molecular oxygen. TiO2 Degussa P25 was found to be more efficient photocatalyst for the degradation of the model compounds as compared with other photocatalysts. The degradation products were analysed using GC/MS analysis technique and probable pathways for the formation of different products have been proposed.

Modeling adsorption and photocatalytic treatment of recalcitrant contaminant on multi-walled carbon/TiO2 nanocomposite

Abstract:A nanocomposite photocatalyst consisting of titanium dioxide (TiO2) supported on multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) has been successfully prepared and used for the treatment of wastewater contaminated with tetracycline (TC), a recalcitrant antibiotic pollutant. The TiO2/MCNT composites were prepared by a simple evaporation-drying method. The properties of MWCNT/TiO2 were optimized by dispersing different amounts of TiO2 onto MWCNT. The structural and optical characteristics of the nano-engineered photocatalyst composite were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) techniques. Photocatalytic degradation of TC was conducted in a quartz glass reactor. Different kinetic models were used to demonstrate the governing mechanisms. The findings revealed that the TiO2/MWCNT composite had enhanced photocatalytic activity (95% TC removal) compared to TiO2 (86% removal). The photocatalyst nanocomposite exhibited overall pseudo-second-order reaction kinetics and favored the Langmuir adsorption isotherm. Although up to 95% degradation of TC was achieved, only 75% of it was mineralized as a result of the formation of stable refractory intermediates.

TiO2/p-BC Composite Photocatalyst for Efficient Removal of Tetracycline from Aqueous Solutions under Simulated Sunlight

Abstract:Pollution caused by antibiotics has brought significant challenges to the ecological environment. To improve the efficiency of the removal of tetracycline (TC) from aqueous solutions, a composite material consisting of TiO2 and phosphoric acid-treated peanut shell biochar (p-BC) has been successfully synthesized in the present study by the sol-gel method. In addition, the composite material was characterized using various techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS). The XPS and FTIR analyses revealed the formation of a new Ti–O–C bond, while the XRD analysis confirmed the presence of TiO2 (with an anatase phase) in the composite material. Also, the PL analyses showed a notable decrease in the recombination efficiency of electrons and holes, which was due to the formation of a composite. This was further supported by the UV-vis DRS analyses, which revealed a decrease in bandgap (to 2.73 eV) of the composite material and led to enhanced light utilization and improved photocatalytic activity. Furthermore, the effects of pH, composite dosage, and initial concentration on the removal of TC were thoroughly examined, which resulted in a maximum removal efficiency of 95.3% under optimal conditions. Additionally, five consecutive cycle tests demonstrated an exceptional reusability and stability of the composite material. As a result of the experiments, the active species verified that ·O2− played a key role in the photodegradation of TC. Four possible degradation pathways of TC were then proposed. As a general conclusion, the TiO2/p–BC composite can be used as an efficient photocatalyst in the removal of TC from aqueous solutions.

Abstract:The development of novel photocatalysts with high photocatalytic ability is important in the field of photocatalytic degradation and transformation. In this work, we combined ilmenite phase FeTiO3 and TiO2 nanoparticles (P25) through a cross-linking method to produce novel hexagonal FeTiO3/TiO2 composites coated by nanosized TiO2 particles. Their morphology, crystallinity, and light absorption ability were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS) analyses, respectively. The heterojunction effect between FeTiO3 and TiO2 could promote the spatial separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, gave the FeTiO3/TiO2 composites strong oxidizing ability, and increased absorption of Xe lamp light. When used as photocatalysts toward phenolic compounds and dyes, the 5% FeTiO3/TiO2 composite showed the highest photocatalytic activity. The intermediate product of 4-chlorophenol degradation was also characterized, and the photocatalytic mechanism was proposed. The results indicated that the as-prepared FeTiO3/TiO2 composite materials show promise as a photocatalyst for environmental remediation, which could be applied to water pollution control.

Effect of dissolved organic matters and inorganic ions on TiO2 photocatalysis of diclofenac: mechanistic study and degradation pathways

Abstract:Diclofenac (DCF) exists extensively in sewage treatment plant effluent, and it is one of the most reported environmental pharmaceutical contaminants. In this work, the photocatalytic degradation of DCF by titanium dioxide (TiO2) in pure water under visible light and the influence of humic acids (HA) (as a kind of dissolved organic matter (DOM), phosphate and ferrous ion (Fe2+)) were investigated. The results showed that the lower the pH was, the better the degradation effect of DCF under acidic conditions was. Different concentrations of DOM, phosphate ion, and Fe2+ could inhibit the degradation of DCF, and the higher the concentration was, the stronger the inhibition was. Different concentrations of chloride ions had little effect on the degradation. A slight elimination (8-12.9%) of total organic carbon (TOC) was observed during the mineralization of DCF with and without DOM and inorganic ions, indicating poor mineralization during the process of photocatalytic degradation, and DOM, phosphate, and Fe2+ had little effect on DCF mineralization. Furthermore, hydroxyl radicals, superoxide radicals, and singlet oxygen radicals were present during the photocatalytic degradation of DCF. DOM and inorganic ions could inhibit the intensity of hydroxyl radical and promote superoxide radicals (O2-) and singlet oxygen (1O2) to varying degrees. Finally, the degradation mechanism and main products were analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS), and nine possible intermediates were detected. Hydroxylation, dechlorination, cyclization, and oxidation were the main degradation mechanisms. However, DOM, phosphate, and Fe2+ did not affect the type of intermediate products in terms of the mass-to-charge ratio. This paper mainly studied the mechanisms of different influencing factors in simulated environments to provide a theoretical basis for the degradation of DCF in wastewater treatment plants. Degradation of pesticides chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin and chlorothalonil in aqueous solution by TiO2 photocatalysis

Abstract:Degradation of pesticides chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin and chlorothalonil in aqueous solution by TiO2 photocatalysis under UVA (365 nm) irradiation was examined. Enhancement of degradation and improvement in biodegradability index (BOD5/COD ratio) by H2O2 addition were also evaluated. UVA irradiation per se produced insignificant degradation of the pesticides. In UV/TiO2 photocatalysis (TiO2 1.5 g L(-1), pH 6 and 300 min irradiation), COD and TOC removal were 25.95 and 8.45%, respectively. In UV/TiO2/H2O2 photocatalysis (TiO2 1.5 g L(-1), H2O2 100 mg L(-1), pH 6 and 300 min irradiation), COD and TOC removal were 53.62 and 21.54%, respectively and biodegradability index improved to 0.26. Ammonia-nitrogen (NH3-N) decreased from 22 to 7.8 mg L(-1) and nitrate-nitrogen (NO3(-)-N) increased from 0.7 to 13.8 mg L(-1) in 300 min, indicating mineralization. Photocatalytic degradation followed pseudo-first order kinetics with rate constant (k) of 0.0025 and 0.0008 min(-1) for COD and TOC removal, respectively. FTIR spectra indicated degradation of the organic bonds of the pesticides. UV/TiO2/H2O2 photocatalysis is effective in degradation of pesticides chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin and chlorothalonil in aqueous solution. UV/TiO2/H2O2 photocatalysis may be applied as pretreatment of a chlorpyrifos, cypermethrin and chlorothalonil pesticide wastewater at pH 6, for biological treatment.
Photocatalytic Degradation of Dodecyl-Benzenesulfonate over Tio2-Cu2o under Visible Irradiation

Abstract:A series of TiO2–Cu2O mixed oxides were prepared by the hydrolysis of titanium butoxide and reduction of copper acetate with hydrazine. These composite oxides were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma spectrometry (ICP), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), N2 adsorption and UV–vis techniques. Photocatalytic degradation of dodecyl-benzenesulfonate (DBS) under visible irradiation was performed, and effects of composition of catalysts and reaction conditions were studied. It was observed that TiO2–Cu2O composite oxides exhibited better photocatalytic activity than Cu2O or TiO2 alone. Among these composite oxides, the 5%TiO2–Cu2O displayed the highest activity, and the degradation percentage of DBS and COD reached 97.3% and 65%, respectively. In addition, it was found that the decomposition of DBS followed the first-order kinetics and the adsorption of DBS followed the Langmuir model. Oxygen in solution played a vital role in the elimination of COD.
Microwave assisted photocatalytic degradation of pentachlorophenol in aqueous TiO2 nanotubes suspension

Abstract:TiO2/SiO2 (Ti:Si=10:1) nanoparticles were first prepared by ultrasound-assisted hydrolysis and then treated by 10M NaOH at 110°C for 20h to form titania nanotubes. The formed samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), N2-adsorption, UV–vis absorption spectra and ESR spectrometer. Result indicates that the samples prepared are nanotubular structure with opened ends. The diameter of nanotubes is about 10nm and their length is about 100nm. The surface area of TiO2 nanotubes is 286m2/g. The ESR signals show that there are more OH on the surface of TiO2 nanotubes than that on the surface of TiO2/SiO2 nanoparticles. The photocatalytic degradation of PCP on TiO2 nanotubes assisted by microwave in aqueous solution was investigated. The result indicates that the degradation rate in the microwave assisted photocatalysis process (MPC) is faster than that in other processes including microwave assisted photolytic (MDP), microwave alone process (MP) and dark process (DP). The photocatalytic activity of TiO2 nanotubes is higher than that of P25 and TiO2/SiO2 nanoparticles. It may be contributed to the capacity of absorption to the UV–vis irradiation and specific surface area among the photocatalysts. PCP is effectively degraded in the MPC on TiO2 nanotubes. The removal of 40mg/L PCP is 93.5% and the CODcr decrease is 51.8% in 20min. Along with the degradation of PCP, pH of solution decreases from 10.32 to 7.5 and the dechlorination is completed in 12min. The major intermediates of PCP in MPC on TiO2 nanotubes were identified by GC/MS, including tetrachlorophenols, trichlorophenols, tetrachlorocatechol, tetrachlorohydroquinone. Based on the results, the possible photocatalytic degradation pathways of PCP on TiO2 in MPC were proposed.
Catalytic oxidation of PCDD/F on a V2O5-WO3/TiO2 catalyst: Effect of chlorinated benzenes and chlorinated phenols.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) is a well-proven technique, applied in a rising number of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration plants, yet the simultaneous and possibly competitive co-oxidation of other compounds, such as chlorinated benzenes (CBz) or phenols (CP), is still poorly documented. In this study, a grinded commercial catalyst (vanadium-tungsten supported on titanium dioxide) was submitted to exploratory testing: the PCDD/F present in a gas test flow were catalytically oxidised (200°C, 10,000h-1), either as such or in the presence of benzene (Bz), monochlorobenzene (MCBz), and 1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCBz) and the effect of these additions on the catalytic destruction of PCDD/F was verified experimentally. Both removal efficiency (RE) and destruction efficiency (DE) declined during the exploratory testing and, importantly, some DCBz even converted into supplemental PCDD/F. Also, the occurrence of carbon deposition negatively influenced catalytic oxidation activity. Regeneration with oxygen or air allowed to remove the deposited carbon and the original catalytic activity was largely restored after calcination. In a second part of this study, the PCDD/F-formation from DCBz, hexachlorobenzene (HCBz), o-monochlorophenol (o-MCP) and pentachlorophenol (PeCP) was demonstrated and tentatively explored. To prepare for further elucidation of the reaction mechanism, a complete isomer-specific analysis was prepared.
Heterogeneous Fenton-like removal of tri(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate by ilmenite (FeTiO3): Kinetic, degradation mechanism and toxic assessment

Abstract:Tri(2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP), a common organophosphate flame retardant, was frequently detected in the environment and posed threats to human health. In this work, the main component of ilmenite FeTiO3 was synthesized by the sol-gel method and employed as the catalyst for the degradation of TCPP by activating persulfate (PS) under UV irradiation. The degradation processes were fitted by the pseudo-first-order kinetic. The kobs value in UV/FeTiO3/PS system was up to 0.0056 min-1 and much higher than that in UV/PS (0.0014 min-1), UV/FeTiO3 (0.0012 min-1) and FeTiO3/PS (0.0016 min-1) systems, demonstrating a distinct synergistic effect in TCPP removal. The degradation efficiency of TCPP increased with the increase of UV intensity, PS concentration and catalyst dosage, and with the decrease of pH. By quenching experiment and EPR analysis, ·OH was confirmed to be the dominant radical in the reaction of the UV/FeTiO3/PS system. The possible degradation pathways of TCPP were dechlorination, dealkylation, and further oxidation of alkyl groups based on the theoretical calculation of frontier molecular orbits. The toxicity of degradation intermediates evaluated by luminescence inhibition rate of photoluminescence was higher than TCPP. Thus, TCPP can be degraded in the UV/FeTiO3/PS system effectively at the premise of introducing controlling measures to reduce the toxicity of degradation intermediates.
Catalytic Decomposition of PCDD/Fs over Nano-TiO2 Based V2O5/CeO2 Catalyst at Low Temperature

Abstract:Catalytic decomposition of PCDD/Fs (Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and furans) over nano-TiO2 based V2O5/CeO2 catalyst is investigated at 180 degrees C based on a stable PCDD/Fs generating system. Step impregnation method is used to prepare the powder catalyst, and catalyst characterization is conducted by XRD and TPR. Effects of oxygen, water vapour and sulphur dioxide on PCDD/Fs destruction are studied in terms of destruction efficiency. Oxygen plays a positive role on PCDD/Fs destruction by accelerating the conversion of V4+Ox and V5+Ox, Ce3+Ox and Ce4+Ox. The destruction efficiencies of PCDD/Fs increase from 67.6% to 77.8% with oxygen contents increasing from 11 vol.% to 21 vol.%. In the absence of oxygen, PCDD/Fs can still be destroyed with destruction efficiency of 33.7% due to the lattice oxygen atoms stored by V2O5 and CeO2. Water vapour negatively affects the destruction of PCDD/Fs by competitive adsorption. On the other hand, negative destruction efficiencies of TCDD and TCDF are observed in the presence of water, and the values become lower with water vapour contents increasing. This result demonstrates water vapour facilitates the removal of Cl-present on the catalyst surface. SO2 inhibits the activity of catalyst by poisoning active sites of catalyst. With SO2 concentration increasing from 0 to 100 ppm, destruction efficiencies of PCDD/Fs significantly decrease from 67.6% to 51.9%. Finally, catalyst regeneration is also investigated at 180 degrees C in the presence of oxygen. Most of PCDD/Fs residues in the catalyst will be destroyed, and catalyst is regenerated without PCDD/Fs contaminated.
Effective photodegradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid on TiO2 nanocrystals anchored on SBA-15 mesoporous material

Abstract:This study investigated the photodegradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) using TiO2 nanoparticles supported on SBA-15 molecular sieve, obtained by the in situ anchoring (ISA) method. Results obtained by X-ray diffraction (XRD) revealed that the incorporation of the TiO2 did not destroy the characteristic structure of the molecular sieve. Raman spectrum showed active modes for anatase phase of TiO2 nanoparticles anchored onto SBA-15 matrix. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images illustrated an arrangement organized into rope-like structures. UV–Vis spectra indicated that TiO2 anchored into SBA-15 exhibited light absorption in the UV region. Zeta potential analysis was performed that revealed a negative surface charge for samples, which affected the adsorption process. TiO2/SBA-15 catalyst showed an efficiency photocatalytic of 82.11% in the degradation of 2,4-D herbicide in 180 min of UV radiation. Moreover, considerable loss of the photocatalytic activity was not observed when reusing the catalyst three times, with 82.11%, 74.4%, and 74% of photocatalytic efficiency in the first, second, and third cycles, respectively. The Allium cepa bioassay demonstrated that 2,4-D initial solution (10–5 M) induced chromosomal damage and inhibited the growth of roots, after 24 h of exposition. However, the residues coming from the photocatalytic assay exhibited similar results to the negative control (distilled water). Therefore, the material TiO2/SBA-15 showed promising results in the degradation of 2,4-D herbicide.

Abstract:AbstractThe aim of the study was to investigate the degradation kinetics of tetracycline antibiotic by nanosized titanium dioxide under ultraviolet irradiation. Enhancement of photocatalysis by addition of Hydrogen peroxide was also evaluated. Various experimental parameters such as initial tetracycline concentrations, initial titanium dioxide concentration, initial pH, reaction times, initial Hydrogen peroxide concentrations, as well as water matrix using ultrapure water, drinking water and secondary effluent were investigated. The initial rate of photocatalytic degradation of tetracycline well fitted the Langmuir–Hinshelwood kinetic model (R2 = 0.9926) with a reaction rate constant of 1.4 mg/L min. The degradation rate depended on initial tetracycline concentration and initial pH. The degradation rate also increased with higher titanium dioxide density and reached a plateau at titanium dioxide concentration of 1.0 g/L. The tetracycline degradation rate was higher in drinking water compared to ultrapure water. The addition of Hydrogen peroxide to titanium dioxide suspension significantly enhanced the tetracycline degradation rate and substantially reduced the time required to degrade 100 % of tetracycline. Changes of chemical oxygen demand values during photolysis indicated that tetracycline transformed into intermediate products without complete mineralization. The ultraviolet visible spectra obtained before and after ultraviolet irradiation in the presence of titanium dioxide can indicate the formation of 4a,12a-anhydro-4-oxo-4- dimethylaminotetracycline.

Abstract:Catalytic oxidation of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/F) is a well-proven technique, applied in a rising number of Municipal Solid Waste Incineration plants, yet the simultaneous and possibly competitive co-oxidation of other compounds, such as chlorinated benzenes (CBz) or phenols (CP), is still poorly documented. In this study, a grinded commercial catalyst (vanadium-tungsten supported on titanium dioxide) was submitted to exploratory testing: the PCDD/F present in a gas test flow were catalytically oxidised (200 degrees C, 10,000 h(-1)), either as such or in the presence of 'benzene (Bz), monochlorobenzene (MCBz), and 1,2-dichlorobenzene (DCBz) and the effect of these additions on the catalytic destruction of PCDD/F was verified experimentally. Both removal efficiency (RE) and destruction efficiency (DE) declined during the exploratory testing and, importantly, some DCBz even converted into supplemental PCDD/F. Also, the occurrence of carbon deposition negatively influenced catalytic oxidation activity. Regeneration with oxygen or air allowed to remove the deposited carbon and the original catalytic activity was largely restored after calcination. In a second part of this study, the PCDD/F-formation from DCBz, hexachlorobenzene (HCBz), o-monochlorophenol (o-MCP) and pentachlorophenol (PeCP) was demonstrated and tentatively explored. Removal of perfluorooctanoic acid by MWCNT-modified carbon-doped titanium dioxide in a peroxymonosulfate/simulated sunlight system

Abstract:Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is widely used as an industrial surfactant and has been detected in various aquatic systems. Herein, a series of multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-modified carbon-doped TiO 2 catalysts (xCNT/C-TiO 2 ) were prepared through a one-step calcination process and applied as adsorptive photocatalysts. Characterization and density functional theory (DFT) calculation results revealed that carbon doping introduced impurity energy levels between the band structures of TiO 2 . Moreover, the MWCNTs acted as photosensitizers that expanded the wavelength absorption range. The xCNT/C-TiO 2 composites achieved efficient adsorption through multiple pathways (metal-ligand interaction, electrostatic attraction, π-anion interaction, and hydrophobic adsorption), and the adsorbed PFOA was degraded by the simulated sunlight/xCNT/C-TiO 2 /peroxymonosulfate (PMS) systems. The 2CNT/C-TiO 2 sample exhibited the highest PFOA removal efficiency and degraded more than 90 % of the organic contaminant (2 mg/L, defluorination rate of 39.2 %) in 3.5 h. Furthermore, PFOA could be removed during repeated usage of the catalyst system without chemically regenerating the photocatalyst. The enhanced adsorption and photocatalytic removal by xCNT/C-TiO 2 were due to the following reasons: (i) the MWCNTs in the composites provided a different adsorption pathway than the pre-existing monodentate mode and introduced more hydroxyl groups that could adsorb PFOA; (ii) the carbon doping in the TiO 2 lattice reduced the band gap, leading to the more efficient utilization of visible light; (iii) MWCNTs inhibited the recombination of photogenerated charge carriers caused by doping, and this also promoted the production of active species and the direct oxidation of PFOA by photo-induced holes. Finally, enhanced monodentate adsorption mode and photodegradation mechanism were proposed based on experimental results and DFT calculations.
