Probiotics and Antimicrobial Proteins

Abstract:The number of studies claiming probiotic health effects of Lactobacillus plantarum is escalating. Lb. plantarum is a lactic acid bacterium found in diverse ecological niches, highlighting its particular capabilities of adaptation and genome plasticity. Another function that needs to be underlined is the capabilities of Lb. plantarum to produce diverse and potent bacteriocins, which are antimicrobial peptides with possible applications as food preservative or antibiotic complementary agents. Taken together, all these characteristics design Lb. plantarum as a genuine model for academic research and viable biological agent with promising applications. The present review aims at shedding light on the safety of Lb. plantarum and run through the main studies underpinning its beneficial claims. The mechanisms explaining probiotic-related features are discussed.

Abstract:Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) is a well-studied and versatile species of lactobacilli. It is found in several niches, including human mucosal surfaces, and it is largely employed in the food industry and boasts a millenary tradition of safe use, sharing a long-lasting relationship with humans. L. plantarum is generally recognised as safe and exhibits a strong probiotic character, so that several strains are commercialised as health-promoting supplements and functional food products. For these reasons, L. plantarum represents a valuable model to gain insight into the nature and mechanisms of antimicrobials as key factors underlying the probiotic action of health-promoting microbes. Probiotic antimicrobials can inhibit the growth of pathogens in the gut ensuring the intestinal homeostasis and contributing to the host health. Furthermore, they may be attractive alternatives to conventional antibiotics, holding potential in several biomedical applications. The aim of this review is to investigate the most relevant papers published in the last ten years, bioprospecting the antimicrobial activity of characterised probiotic L. plantarum strains. Specifically, it focuses on the different chemical nature, the action spectra and the mechanisms underlying the bioactivity of their antibacterial and antiviral agents. Emerging trends in postbiotics, some in vivo applications of L. plantarum antimicrobials, including strengths and limitations of their therapeutic potential, are addressed and discussed.

Lactic Acid Bacteria isolated from traditional and innovative alheiras as potential biocontrol agents

Abstract:From a selection of seven traditional and 14 innovative alheiras, 491 lactic acid bacteria (LAB) were isolated and tested for their antimicrobial activity against several food-borne pathogens. Among these, six strains revealed antimicrobial activity through potential bacteriocin production against 14 Listeria monocytogenes strains, Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212, Clostridium sporogenes ESB050, and Clostridium perfringens ESB054. Through whole genome sequencing (WGS), these strains were identified as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (2), Leuconostoc mesenteroides (1), and Pediococcus acidilactici (3). Furthermore, several orthologues of class II bacteriocins genes were identified, including Plantaricin E, Plantaricin F, Pediocin PA, Enterocin X, Leucocin A, and Coagulin A. No virulence or antibiotic resistance genes' orthologues were detected by WGS analysis. However, the selected LAB strains showed variable phenotypic patterns related to virulence genes and antibiotic resistance when assessed through classical methodologies. None of these strains demonstrated the production of biogenic amines, gelatinase or DNase. Additionally, no hemolytic activity or lipase enzyme production was observed. However, only Lpb. plantarum 9A3 was sensitive to all tested antibiotics and was thus chosen for further examination. The bacteriocins produced by Lpb. plantarum (9A3) exhibited stability across a broad range of conditions, including temperatures from 4 to 100 °C, pH values ranging from 2 to 8, exposure to surfactants and detergents (Tween 20 and 80, SDS, EDTA 0.1, 2 and 5 mM, urea and sodium deoxycholate), and enzymes (papain and catalase). Their maximum activity (AU/mL = 12,800) against four L. monocytogenes strains was observed between 21 and 36 h of growth of Lbp. plantarum 9A3, indicating a bacteriostatic mode of action. Therefore, this strain appears to be a robust candidate for potential application as a protective strain to be used in the food industry. Not only is it safe, but it also produces stable bacteriocins (harbouring genes encoding for the production of three) effectively inhibiting significant pathogens such as L. monocytogenes and C. perfringens.

Abstract:Background: Lactiplantibacillus plantarum is a species found in a wide range of ecological niches, including vegetables and dairy products, and it may occur naturally in the human gastrointestinal tract. The precise mechanisms underlying the beneficial properties of these microbes to their host remain obscure. Although Lactic acid bacteria are generally regarded as safe, there are rare cases of the emergence of infections and antibiotic resistance by certain probiotics. Objective: An in silico whole genome sequence analysis of putative probiotic bacteria was set up to identify strains, predict desirable functional properties, and identify potentially detrimental antibiotic resistance and virulence genes. Methods: We characterized the genomes of three L. plantarum strains (54B, 54C, and 55A) isolated from Ethiopian traditional cottage cheese. Whole-genome sequencing was performed using Illumina MiSeq sequencing. The completeness and quality of the genome of L. plantarum strains were assessed through CheckM. Results: Analyses results showed that L. plantarum 54B and 54C are closely related but different strains. The genomes studied did not harbor resistance and virulence factors. They had five classes of carbohydrate-active enzymes with several important functions. Cyclic lactone autoinducer, terpenes, Type III polyketide synthases, ribosomally synthesized and post-translationally modified peptides-like gene clusters, sactipeptides, and all genes required for riboflavin biosynthesis were identified, evidencing their promising probiotic properties. Six bacteriocin-like structures encoding genes were found in the genome of L. plantarum 55A. Conclusions: The lack of resistome and virulome and their previous functional capabilities suggest the potential applicability of these strains in food industries as bio-preservatives and in the prevention and/or treatment of infectious diseases. The results also provide insights into the probiotic potential and safety of these three strains and indicate avenues for further mechanistic studies using these isolates.

Abstract:Lactobacillus plantarum (widespread member of the genus Lactobacillus ) is one of the most studied species extensively used in food industry as probiotic microorganism and/or microbial starter. The exploitation of Lb. plantarum strains with their long history in food fermentation forms an emerging field and design of added-value foods. Lb. plantarum strains were also used to produce new functional (traditional/novel) foods and beverages with improved nutritional and technological features. Lb. plantarum strains were identified from many traditional foods and characterized for their systematics and molecular taxonomy, enzyme systems ( α -amylase, esterase, lipase, α -glucosidase, β -glucosidase, enolase, phosphoketolase, lactase dehydrogenase, etc.), and bioactive compounds (bacteriocin, dipeptides, and other preservative compounds). This review emphasizes that the Lb. plantarum strains with their probiotic properties can have great effects against harmful microflora (foodborne pathogens) to increase safety and shelf-life of fermented foods.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate some probiotic properties of 42 wild Lactobacillusplantarum strains isolated from different Italian foods of animal origin. The strains were first screened for their antibiotic resistance profile (chloramphenicol, erythromycin, gentamicin, and tetracycline), subsequently they were tested for their in vitro resistance to lysozyme (100 mg L−1), low pH (3.0, 2.5 and 2.0) and bile salts (0.3, 0.5 and 1.0 %). Moreover, agglutination property was studied (adhesion to Saccharomycescerevisiae cells), as well as the presence of bsh and msa genes. The strains with the best characteristics were subjected to a further trial in order to evaluate their ability to survive to multiple stresses over time (lysozyme, low pH and bile salts) and the effect of these treatments on adhesion to yeast cells. All the strains were susceptible to chloramphenicol, erythromycin and gentamicin, while 6 strains were excluded from further evaluation because of their resistant phenotype against tetracycline. All the strains were able to grow in presence of lysozyme, as well as in MRS broth at pH 3.0. Only 4 strains showed a growth rate lower than 80 % when grown in MRS broth at pH 2.5, while a relevant growth rate decrease was observed after exposure to pH 2.0. Bile salts didn’t affect the viability of the L. plantarum cells. Twenty-one strains out of 33 tested strains were able to adhere to S. cerevisiae cells. Presence of both bsh and msa genes was detected in 6 strains. The strains resistant to all the stresses, positive to agglutination with S. cerevisiae and showing bsh and msa genes were selected for further evaluation and subjected to different stress treatments over time. The assessment of growth rates showed that exposure to lysozyme significantly increased low pH resistance in L. plantarum. This increase ranged from 2.35 to 15.57 %. The consequential lysozyme and low pH exposures didn’t affect the growth rate values after bile salts treatment, as well as the ability of the strains to adhere to yeast cells wasn’t modified by previous treatments (lysozyme, low pH and bile salts). The present work allows to increase knowledge about non starter lactic acid bacteria from Italian food products. The studied L. plantarum strains showed a good potential for their use as probiotic cultures. However, more in vivo tests are necessary to confirm this potentiality.

Abstract:Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (formerly Lactobacillus plantarum) exhibits relevant probiotic and technological features and is widely used in food industries, improving flavour, texture and organoleptic properties of fermented products. Cell-surface proteins have a key role in the molecular mechanisms responsible for healthy effects, being the first actors in the bacteria - host interactions. Proteins present on the surface of four L. plantarum strains (two isolated from vegetable matrices and two from dairy products) were identified by proteomics with the aim to gain a comprehensive picture of differences in protein profiles potentially related to the habitat of origin and specific properties of the analyzed strains. Results highlighted a more diversified pattern of surface proteins in strains from vegetable matrices compared to those from dairy matrices (>500 proteins vs about 200 proteins, respectively). The four strains shared a core of 143 proteins, while 445 were specifically present in strains from vegetable matrices and 26 were peculiar of strains from dairy origin. Sortase A, involved in adhesion, and choloylglycine hydrolase (bile salt hydrolase) were detected only in strains from vegetable matrices. The peculiar molecular functions of identified proteins suggested that these strains, and in particular L. plantarum S61, could have a significant probiotic and biotechnological potential.
Potential Probiotic Lactic Acid Bacteria with Anti-Penicillium expansum Activity from Different Species of Tunisian Edible Snails

Abstract:This study aimed to isolate lactic acid bacteria (LAB) from the digestive tract, meat and slime of edible snails (Helix lucorum, Helix aspersa and Eobania vermiculata) and investigate their antagonistic activity against Penicillium expansum. They were then characterized for their probiotic potential. Among 900 bacterial isolates, 47 LAB exhibiting anti-P. expansum activity were identified through matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) as Levilactobacillus brevis (25), Lactococcus lactis (3), Enterococcus faecium (12), Enterococcus faecalis (4), Enterococcus casseliflavus (1), and Enterococcus mundtii (2). Sixty-two percent of the strains were tolerant to 100 mg/L of lysozyme. Seventy two percent of the isolates were able to survive at pH 3 and most of them tolerate 2.5% bile salt concentration. Moreover, 23% of the strains displayed bile salt hydrolase activity. Interestingly, all strains were biofilm strong producers. However, their auto- and co-aggregation properties were time and pH dependent with high aggregative potentiality at pH 4.5 after 24 h. Remarkably, 48.94% of the strains showed high affinity to chloroform. The safety assessment revealed that the 47 LAB had no hemolytic activity and 64% of them lacked mucin degradation activity. All isolated strains were susceptible to gentamycin, streptomycin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole. Overall, 43 LAB strains showed inhibitory activity against a broad spectrum of pathogenic Gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, fungi, and yeast. Our findings suggest that L. brevis (EVM12 and EVM14) and Ent. faecium HAS34 strains could be potential candidates for probiotics with interesting antibacterial and anti-P. expansum activities.

Abstract:Lactiplantibacillus plantarum is one of the lactic acid bacteria species most used as probiotics and starter cultures in food production. Bacteriocin-producers Lpb. plantarum are also promising natural food preservatives. This study aimed to characterize Lpb. plantarum R23 and its bacteriocins (R23 bacteriocins). The genome sequence of Lpb. plantarum R23 was obtained by whole-genome sequencing (WGS) in an Illumina NovaSeq platform. The activity of Lpb. plantarum R23-produced bacteriocin against two Listeria monocytogenes strains (L7946 and L7947) was evaluated, and its molecular size was determined by tricine-SDS-PAGE. No virulence or antibiotic resistance genes were detected. Four 100% identical proteins to the class II bacteriocins (Plantaricin E, Plantaricin F, Pediocin PA-1 (Pediocin AcH), and Coagulin A) were found by WGS analysis. The small (<6.5 kDa) R23 bacteriocins were stable at different pH values (ranging from 2 to 8), temperatures (between 4 and 100 °C), detergents (all, except Triton X-100 and Triton X-114 at 0.01 g/mL), and enzymes (catalase and α-amylase), did not adsorb to the producer cells, had a bacteriostatic mode of action and their maximum activity (AU/mL = 12,800) against two L. monocytogenes strains occurred between 15 and 21 h of Lpb. plantarum R23 growth. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum R23 showed to be a promising bio-preservative culture because, besides being safe, it produces a stable bacteriocin or bacteriocins (harbors genes encoding for the production of four) inhibiting pathogens as L. monocytogenes. Further studies in different food matrices are required to confirm this hypothesis and its suitability as a future starter culture.

Abstract:The probiotic potential of Lactiplantibacillus pentosus CF-6HA isolated from traditionally fermented Aloreña table olives was analyzed in vitro and in silico. Results obtained suggested that this strain can be catalogued as "talented" bacterium exhibiting bacteriocin production with antimicrobial activity against human/animal and plant pathogens, such as Pseudomonas syringae and Verticillium dahliae. The robustness, safety and probiotic potential of L. pentosus CF-6HA was confirmed by in silico analysis. In addition, a plethora of coding genes for defense and adaptability to different life styles besides functional properties were identified. In this sense, defense mechanisms of L. pentosus CF-6HA consist of 17 ISI elements, 98 transposases and 13 temperate phage regions as well as a CRISPR (clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats)/cas system. Moreover, the functionality of this strain was confirmed by the presence of genes coding for secondary metabolites, exopolysaccharides and other bioactive molecules. Finally, we demonstrated the ability of L. pentosus CF-6HA to biotransform selenite to nanoparticles (SeNPs) highlighting its potential role in selenium bioremediation to be exploited in foods, agriculture and the environment; but also for the bio-enrichment of fermented foods with selenium.
Antibacterial Activity of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum‎ from Dairy Products ‎Against Some ‎Foodborne Bacteria

Abstract:Lactiplantibacillus plantarum‎, one of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), is found in various foods, ‎‎including dairy products, meat, and vegetables, and most of these bacteria offer beneficial ‎‎effects to humans and animals as potential probiotics with broad-spectrum antimicrobial ‎‎activities. The aim of this study was evaluating the antibacterial efficacy of L. ‎plantarum‎ ‎against ‎some foodborne bacteria isolated from dairy products. This research involved 34 dairy ‎products, ‎including local and imported milk, cheese, and yogurt sold locally in Baghdad ‎province, Iraq, during May ‎‎2022. For the isolation of L. ‎plantarum‎, a special medium called ‎MRS (de Man Rogosa and ‎Sharpe) was applied. Colonies were purified and identified by routine ‎bacteriological methods, ‎Vitek2 system, and confirmed by the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) ‎targeting the ‎16S rRNA‎ ‎gene followed by the amplicon sequencing. Other aerobic bacteria ‎contaminating dairy products ‎were also isolated onto sterile selective media specific for each ‎microorganism, and the isolates ‎were identified by routine diagnostics tests followed by ‎verification with Vitek2 system. Then, ‎the culture supernatant of L. ‎plantarum‎ was tested for its ‎antagonistic activity toward foodborne ‎bacteria by the use of agar well diffusion assay. The ‎findings showed the isolation of 2 L. ‎plantarum‎‎, 3 Pseudomonas aeruginosa‎, 4 Escherichia coli, ‎one isolate of Bacillus subtilis, and ‎another Staphylococcus hominis. The filtered supernatant of ‎L. ‎plantarum‎ was significantly ‎efficient in inhibiting the growth of the above bacteria. Each of E. ‎coli and B. subtilis‎ revealed ‎zones of inhibition of 36 and 38 mm in diameter, respectively, ‎while P. aeruginosa‎ and S. ‎hominis had inhibition zones diameters of 27 and 29 mm, ‎respectively. This suggests that the L. ‎plantarum‎‎ supernatant possesses a broad-spectrum ‎activity against foodborne bacteria. To ‎conclude, locally made dairy products can hold different ‎contaminating bacteria, which can be ‎eliminated by using probiotics, such as L. ‎plantarum‎, to ‎avoid foodborne diseases onset‎.

Abstract:Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) form a group of bacteria to which most probiotics belong and are commonly found in fermented dairy products. Fermented foods and beverages are foods made through desired microbial growth and enzymatic conversions of food components. In this study, 43 LAB were isolated from Ethiopian traditional cottage cheese, cheese, and yogurt and evaluated for their functional and safety properties as candidate probiotics. Twenty-seven isolates, representative of each fermented food type, were selected and identified to the species level. Limosilactobacillus fermentum was found to be the predominant species in all samples studied (70.4%), while 11.1% of isolates were identified as Lactiplantibacillus plantarum. All 27 isolates tested showed resistance to 0.5% bile salt, while 26 strains were resistant to pH 3. The LAB isolates were also evaluated for antagonistic properties against key pathogens, with strain-specific features observed for their antimicrobial activity. Five strains from cottage cheese (Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 54B, 54C, and 55A, Lactiplantibacillus pentosus 55B, and Pediococcus pentosaceus 95E) showed inhibitory activity against indicator pathogens that are key causes of gastrointestinal infections in Ethiopia, i.e., Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica var. Typhimurium, Staphylococcus aureus, Shigella flexneri, and Listeria monocytogenes. Strain-specific immunomodulatory activity monitored as nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) and interferon regulatory factor (IRF) activation was documented for Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 54B, 55A and P. pentosaceus 95E. Antibiotic susceptibility testing confirmed that all LAB isolates were safe concerning their antibiotic resistance profiles. Five isolates (especially Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 54B, 54C, and 55A, Lactiplantibacillus pentosus 55B, and P. pentosaceus 95E) showed promising results in all assays and are novel probiotic candidates of interest for clinical trial follow-up.

Abstract:Five Lactobacillus plantarum strains (which were previously isolated from Turkish pastırma), were evaluated for the possibilities of using in the food industry. Antimicrobial properties, metabolic activities, exopolysaccharide production and antibiotic resistance were investigated. It was also assessed probiotics features such as adhesion ability, survival in simulated gastric environment and acid tolerance analysis. Antimicrobial activity was characterized based on effects of several enzymes, different temperature and pH. All strains showed remarkable antimicrobial activity and antimicrobial substances were found resistant to enzymes, high temperature and low pH. Metabolic activities and exopolysaccharide production of the strains were found relatively weak. Determinate to antibiotic susceptibility patterns 14 different antibiotics used and strains were found reliable in terms of transferable resistance genes except for erythromycin. All strains showed resistance to acidic condition and gastric environment. However, adhesion ability of strains was found relatively low. All findings showed that, these strains potential candidate for use in food industry especially as natural food preservatives because of antimicrobial activity capacity and one strain (S2) have remarkable potential to use as starter cultures or probiotics.

In Vitro Evaluation of Probiotic Properties of Lactobacillus plantarum UBLP40 Isolated from Traditional Indigenous Fermented Food

Abstract:In this study, traditional indigenous fermented food isolate Lactobacillus plantarum UBLP40 was screened for in vitro probiotic properties, antibiotic susceptibility, hemolytic activity, production of lactic acid, hydrogen peroxide, bile salt hydrolase and phytase, and antioxidative activity. Results showed that Lact. plantarum UBLP40 can survive simulated gastrointestinal conditions, adhere to mucin, possess a hydrophobic cell surface, ability to auto-aggregation, and possessed antimicrobial activity against Micrococcus luteus MTCC 106, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus subsp. aureus ATCC® BAA-1720, Pseudomonas aeruginosa MTCC 1688, and Escherichia coli MTCC 1687. Lact. plantarum UBLP40 produced 48.59 U/mg phytase and 1.78 ± 0.01 gm % lactic acid and showed the ability to produce hydrogen peroxide and bile salt hydrolase. Moreover, the usual antibiotic susceptible profile and non-hemolytic activity indicated the safety of the strain. The intracellular extract of UBLP40 showed 13.8 ± 1.4% (equivalent to ~8 µM butylated hydroxytoluene) α,α-diphenyl-β-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, reducing activity equivalent to 1 µg L-cysteine, Fe2+ chelation equivalent to 5 µM ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, and exhibited 17.73 ± 4.40 µM glutathione per gram of protein. In conclusion, this study demonstrates that Lact. plantarum UBLP40 is a potential probiotic candidate.

Abstract:The present study evaluates the probiotic properties of three Lactobacillus plantarum strains MJM60319, MJM60298, and MJM60399 possessing antimicrobial activity against animal enteric pathogens. The three strains did not show bioamine production, mucinolytic and hemolytic activity and were susceptible to common antibiotics. The L. plantarum strains survived well in the simulated orogastrointestinal transit condition and showed adherence to Caco-2 cells in vitro. The L. plantarum strains showed strong antimicrobial activity against enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli, Shiga toxin-producing E. coli, Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium, Choleraesuis and Gallinarum compared to the commercial probiotic strain Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG. The mechanism of antimicrobial activity of the L. plantarum strains appeared to be by the production of lactic acid. Furthermore, the L. plantarum strains tolerated freeze-drying and maintained higher viability in the presence of cryoprotectants than without cryoprotectants. Finally, the three L. plantarum strains tolerated NaCl up to 8% and maintained >60% growth. These characteristics of the three L. plantarum strains indicate that they could be applied as animal probiotic after appropriate in vivo studies.

Abstract:Lactobacillus plantarum species (recently re-named Lactiplantibacillus (Lpb.) plantarum subsp. plantarum ) can be isolated from both either the mammalian gut or specific fermented foods where they may be present at high concentrations. Whilst Lpb. plantarum strains have been proposed as potential probiotic candidates, the ability of resident strains consumed in fermented foods to interact with the host is unclear. The main objective of this study was to investigate the cellular location and ability of three different food-borne Lpb. plantarum strains isolated from different sources (table olives and cheese) to modulate the immune response of a murine macrophage-like cell line (J774A.1). For that purpose, macrophages were exposed to the three different Lpb. plantarum strains for 24 h and the expression of a panel of genes involved in the immune response, including genes encoding pattern-recognition receptors (TLRs and NLRs) and cytokines was evaluated by qRT-PCR. We also utilized chemical inhibitors of intracellular pathways to gain some insight into potential signaling mechanisms. Results showed that the native food strains of Lpb. plantarum were able to modulate the response of J774A.1 murine macrophages through a predominately NOD signaling pathway that reflects the transient intracellular location of these strains within the macrophage. The data indicate the capacity of food-dwelling Lpb. plantarum strains to influence macrophage-mediated host responses if consumed in sufficient quantities.

Abstract:Lactiplantibacillus plantarum stands out as a remarkably diverse species of lactic acid bacteria, occupying a myriad of ecological niches. Particularly noteworthy is its presence in human breast milk, which can serve as a reservoir of probiotic bacteria, contributing significantly to the establishment and constitution of infant gut microbiota. In light of this, our study attempted to conduct an initial investigation encompassing both genomic and phenotypic aspects of the L. plantarum PU3 strain, that holds potential as a probiotic agent. By employing the cutting-edge third-generation Nanopore sequencing technology, L. plantarum PU3 revealed a circular chromosome of 3,180,940 bp and nine plasmids of various lengths. The L. plantarum PU3 genome has a total of 2962 protein-coding and non-coding genes. Our in-depth investigations revealed more than 150 probiotic gene markers that unfold the genetic determinants for acid tolerance, bile resistance, adhesion, and oxidative and osmotic stress. The in vivo analysis showed the strain’s proficiency in utilizing various carbohydrates as growth substrates, complementing the in silico analysis of the genes involved in metabolic pathways. Notably, the strain demonstrated a pronounced affinity for D-sorbitol, D-mannitol, and D-Gluconic acid, among other carbohydrate sources. The in vitro experimental verification of acid, osmotic and bile tolerance validated the robustness of the strain in challenging environments. Encouragingly, no virulence factors were detected in the genome of PU3, suggesting its safety profile. In search of beneficial properties, we found potential bacteriocin biosynthesis clusters, suggesting its capability for antimicrobial activity. The characteristics exhibited by L. plantarum PU3 pave the way for promising strain potential, warranting further investigations to unlock its full capacity and contributions to probiotic and therapeutic avenues.

Abstract:The objective of this study was to assess the prevalence, types, sociodemographic and clinical-related factors of complementary and alternative medicine use among Moroccan women with breast cancer. A cross-sectional study was carried out at the National Institute of Oncology in Rabat. 400 patients with breast cancer were recruited for face-to-face interviews. Data were collected using a questionnaire addressing personal/medical characteristics and the use of CAM therapies. 88.5% of women used at least one CAM therapy, 73.2% of them reported began to use CAM at the onset of breast cancer symptoms. Type of CAM commonly used were prayers, listening and/or reading the Koran and use of naturel products like honey or fenugreek. High education level was independent factors related to CAM use. Interventions should be focused on open communication and further researches are needed to explore the safety and the outcome of CAM use.
