Abstract:The refractive indices of naturally occurring materials are limited, and there exists an index gap between indices of air and available solid materials. With many photonics and electronics applications, there has been considerable effort in creating artificial materials with optical and dielectric properties similar to air while simultaneously being mechanically stable to bear load. Here, a class of ordered nanolattice materials consisting of periodic thin‐shell structures with near‐unity refractive index and high stiffness is demonstrated. Using a combination of 3D nanolithography and atomic layer deposition, these ordered nanostructured materials have reduced optical scattering and improved mechanical stability compared to existing randomly porous materials. Using ZnO and Al2O3 as the building materials, refractive indices from 1.3 down to 1.025 are achieved. The experimental data can be accurately described by Maxwell Garnett effective media theory, which can provide a guide for index design. The demonstrated low‐index, low‐scattering, and high‐stiffness materials can serve as high‐quality optical films in multilayer photonic structures, waveguides, resonators, and ultra‐low‐k dielectrics.

Abstract:The polyimide-silica nonlinear optical (NLO) hybrid materials with covalent links between the inorganic and the organic networks were synthesized by the sol-gel method. The prepared hybrids were characterized by IR, TGA, XRD, SEM, TEM and can be easily spin-coated, ensuring long-term alignment stability at elevated temperatures. These devices exhibit large electro-optic coefficients at 832 nm. The experimental results suggest that the hybrid thin films have potential applications as passive films for optical devices.

Abstract:Flexible integrated photonics is a new technology which only started to burgeon in the past few years, opening up emerging applications ranging from flexible optical interconnects to conformal sensors on biological tissues. One of the most important factors dictating the performance of these flexible devices is the material choice. Organic polymers are generally considered to be compatible with flexible substrates. However, the low refractive indices of polymers (compared to semiconductors) cannot provide the strong optical confinement necessary for compact photonic integration. Besides polymers, semiconductor NanoMembranes (NMs), thin slices of single crystal semiconductors with sub-micron thickness, are being actively pursued for photonic device integration on flexible substrates. Unlike their rigid bulk counterparts, NMs can be tightly bent without cracking, since surface strain induced by bending linearly scales with the membrane thickness. To make photonic devices, NMs structures are usually first patterned on a rigid substrate such as silicon. The fabricated structures are then picked up by a PDMS rubber stamp and transferred on to the final flexible substrate.This multi-step hybrid process limits processing yield and throughput. Therefore, we turned to amorphous glasses – the material of choice for optics given their exceptionally low optical attenuation. In flexible photonics, using these non-crystalline materials also enables a monolithic fabrication route as they can be directly deposited on to flexible substrates without resorting to epitaxial growth. Abstract:Subwavelength nanostructures are considered as promising building blocks for antireflection and light trapping applications. In this study, we demonstrate excellent broadband antireflection effect from thin films of monolayer silica nanospheres with a diameter of 100 nm prepared by Langmuir-Blodgett method on glass substrates. With a single layer of compact silica nanosphere thin film coated on both sides of a glass, we achieved maximum transmittance of 99% at 560 nm. Furthermore, the optical transmission peak of the nanosphere thin films can be tuned over the UV-visible range by changing processing parameters during Langmuir-Blodgett deposition. The tunable optical transmission peaks of the Langmuir-Blodgett films were correlated with deposition parameters such as surface pressure, surfactant concentration, ageing of suspensions and annealing effect. Such peak-tunable broadband antireflection coating has wide applications in diversified industries such as solar cells, windows, displays and lenses.

Abstract:Organic polymer materials are widely credited with extreme versatility for thin film device processing. However, they generally lack the high refractive indices of inorganic semiconductors essential for tight optical confinement in planar integrated photonic circuits. Inorganic–organic hybrid photonic systems overcome these limits by combining both types of materials, although such hybrid integration remains challenging given the vastly different properties of the two types of materials. In this paper, a new approach is used to realize inorganic–organic hybrid photonics using chalcogenide glass (ChG) materials. Known as an amorphous semiconductor, the glass possesses high refractive indices, and can be prepared in a thin film form through solution deposition and patterned via direct thermal nanoimprinting, processing methods traditionally exclusive to polymer materials only. Sub‐micrometer waveguides, microring resonators, and diffraction gratings fabricated from solution processed (SP) ChG films can be monolithically integrated with organic polymer substrates to create mechanically flexible, high‐index‐contrast photonic devices. The resonators exhibit a high quality factor (Q‐factor) of 80 000 near 1550 nm wavelength. Free‐standing, flexible ChG gratings whose diffraction properties can be readily tailored by conformal integration on nonplanar surfaces are also demonstrated.
Template-free Fabrication of Ag Nanowire Arrays/al2o3assembly with Flexible Collective Longitudinal-Mode Resonance and Ultrafast Nonlinear Optical Response

Abstract:We utilized a co-sputtering technique without any templates, featuring growing and etching synchronously, to delicately fabricate dense and ultrafine Ag nanowire arrays/alumina matrix composite films. Both the diameter and separation distance of the Ag nanowire arrays in the composites are not only within the scope of sub-10 nm but also tunable, which is very hard to accomplish for the conventional optical lithography- or template-based method. It is exhibited that the collective longitudinal plasmon resonance of the composite films, covering a wide range from visible to the near infrared region, is extremely sensitive to the geometrical parameters of the Ag nanowires, owing to the strong plasmonic coupling among neighboring nanowires. The experimental observations were also theoretically supported by the near-field electromagnetic numerical simulation. More interestingly, the fabricated composite films demonstrated ultrafast nonlinear optical response in the visible light region under femtosecond laser excitation, possessing a short relaxation time of 1.45 ps for the longitudinal mode (L mode) resonance. These results indicate that the proposed composite films as a building block with exotic optical properties could provide an opportunity to construct integrated nanodevices for plasmonic optical applications.

Abstract:ZnO-Au nanocomposite thin films have been previously reported as hybrid metamaterials with unique optical properties such as plasmonic resonance properties and hyperbolic behaviors. In this study, Au composition in the ZnO-Au nanocomposites has been effectively tuned by target composition variation and thus resulted in microstructure and optical property tuning. Specifically, all the ZnO-Au nanocomposite thin films grown through the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method show obvious vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN) structure with the Au nanopillars embedded in the ZnO matrix. Moreover, the average diameter of Au nanopillars increases as Au concentration increases, which also leads to the redshifts in the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) wavelength and changes in the hyperbolic behaviors of the films. As a whole, this work discusses how strain-driven tuning of optical properties and microstructure resulted through a novel Au concentration variation approach which has not been previously attempted in the ZnO-Au thin film system. These highly ordered films present great promise in the areas of sensing, waveguides, and nanophotonics to name a few.

Abstract:Advances in nanotechnology have provided opportunities to precisely control the morphology of nanostructures and the ability to explore their structure–property relationships. In this work, well-defined PbTe nanostructures with different morphologies were prepared by a one-step microwave synthesis process. The synthesized PbTe nanostructures were incorporated into solid-state silica gel glass matrices by a facile sol-gel approach for application as optical limiters. Nonlinear optical (NLO) and optical limiting (OL) properties were measured by 532-nm laser pulses with a pulse duration of 35 ps to understand the relationship between the NLO properties and the morphology of six PbTe nanostructures (i.e., nanosheets, nanorods , particle assemblies, hoppercubes, nanocubes, and nanoflowers). The PbTe nanostructures had notably different NLO and OL properties, which strongly correlated with the structural characteristics both in liquid and gel glass matrices. The NLO mechanism was also explored and attributed to excited state absorption, which relates to the size and morphology of the nanostructures. The PbTe particle assemblies had the strongest NLO response under laser irradiation, whereas the PbTe nanocubes had the weakest response, both in liquid and a solid-state gel glass matrices. Importantly, a large OL effect was observed for PbTe particle assemblies doped into silica gel glasses, where the OL threshold surpassed that of previously reported semiconductor nanocrystals. This result suggests these materials can be considered as potential candidate for practical applications in the fields of nonlinear optics. Our work provides insights into the morphology dependence of NLO properties and a strategy to optimize the performance of nanostructures through structural design.

Abstract:Hybrid semiconductor nanomaterials (HSNs) possess unique and interesting optical properties and functionalities that find important applications in emerging technologies. Compared to single component nanomaterials, hybrid nanomaterials offer the possibility and flexibility to control their properties by varying the composition of the materials and related parameters such as morphology and interface. Hybrid nanomaterials are essentially composite materials with relevant physical dimensions for the interface region between different components on the atomic up to nanometer scales, the same length scale of nanomaterials. This article provides an overview of some of the fundamental optical properties of hybrid semiconductor nanomaterials as well as their exploitation for potential applications in different fields. A number of examples from recent research are discussed to illustrate the points of interest and to highlight the salient features of HSNs.

Abstract:An optically transparent Ag nanorods/AAM composite film was prepared by AC electrodeposition of Ag within the nanoporous anodic alumina membrane (AAM). Because the incident light excited different surface plasmon resonance modes along different directions, the composite film displayed an optical anisotropy for the rod-shape of Ag particles. Its three-order nonlinear optical properties were measured by z-scan technique, and the values of |Reχ(3)| and |Imχ(3)| were about 2.6028×10−6 and 5.7614×10−7 eus, respectively.
Self-Assembled BaTiO 3 –Au x Ag 1– x Low-Loss Hybrid Plasmonic Metamaterials with an Ordered “Nano-Domino-like” Microstructure

Abstract:Metallic plasmonic hybrid nanostructures have attracted enormous research interest due to the combined physical properties coming from different material components and the broad range of applications in nanophotonic and electronic devices. However, the high loss and narrow range of property tunability of the metallic hybrid materials have limited their practical applications. Here, a metallic alloy-based self-assembled plasmonic hybrid nanostructure, i.e., a BaTiO3–AuxAg1–x (BTO) vertically aligned nanocomposite, has been integrated by a templated growth method for low-loss plasmonic systems. Comprehensive microstructural characterizations including high-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy (HRSTEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and three-dimensional (3D) electron tomography demonstrate the formation of an ordered "nano-domino-like" morphology with Au0.4Ag0.6 nanopillars as cylindrical cores and BTO as square shells. By comparing with the BTO–Au hybrid thin film, the BTO–Au0.4Ag0.6 alloyed film exhibits much broader plasmon resonance, hyperbolic dispersion, low-loss, and thermally robust features in the UV–vis–NIR wavelength region. Abstract:Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) technology, for electro-optical modulation and acoustic wave filtering in next-generation optical and wireless communications, is driving optoelectronic device performance to new heights. Hybrid integration allows LNOI to be an enabling technology for optical computation, microwave photonics, and quantum information, with large-scale photonic integration, high optical reconfigurability, and strong nonlinear interaction at the single photon level. Key areas of future research identified: large-size low-defect thin film lithium niobate wafer and high-performance device fabrication.
Field enhancement and large optical nonlinearity in Ag nanocomposite polymer film

Abstract:We report a simple in situ synthesis for Ag nanocomposite polymer film. The extinction spectrum and the distribution of the local field intensities for Ag nanoparticles are performed by means of the dipole discrete approximation. The local field intensity is enhanced over 20 times to that of the incident light at the peak wavelength of the extinction spectrum. Nonlinear optical measurements, performed by using the Z-scan techniques, are presented afterwards. Giant enhancement of nonlinear optical responses is found for Ag/PMMA film compared with pure PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) film. The nonlinear refractive index gamma of the Ag/PMMA film is measured to be 3: 708 x 10(-2) cm(2) GW(-1). The enhanced optical properties are due to the surface plasmon resonance of Ag nanoparticles. These results are in agreement with the previous field calculations. Analyzed with respect to Stegeman figures of merit, Ag/PMMA nonlinear polymer film shows promise for practical use in ultrafast optical devices.

Abstract:By using sequential ion implantation, Feng Chen and co‐workers implement a three‐layer hierarchical nanostructure in LiNbO3 crystal with embedded plasmonic Cu and Ag nanoparticles in article number <a href="https://doi.org/10.1002/smll.202003172">2003172</a>. Under excitation of a femtosecond laser, the ultrafast dynamic response of the nanostructure is tailored through the scattering mechanism at the interface between Cu and Ag nanoparticle layers. The optical nonlinearity is enhanced owing to the synergistic effect of the plasmonic nanoparticles, which suggests potential applications in nonlinear photonic devices.

Abstract:Recent advances in manufacturing and technology of ordered hybrid micro/nanostructures have acquired many breakthroughs. With the aid of the cooperation of various materials, the ordered hybrid micro/nanostructures exhibit high‐quality performance and mechanical stability and allow the modulation on the light–matter interaction in a controllable manner, thereby enabling a wide variety of innovative applications. This article reviews recent developments of ordered hybrid micro/nanostructures, with emphasis on the periodic laminar structure, colloidal crystal, and its derivative patterns. Herein, the elegant optical properties derived from structures are mainly referred to. Besides, the fabrication techniques of ordered structures are briefly described. Moreover, an updated overview of the literature on optical application examples of ordered hybrid micro/nanostructures is listed in detail. Finally, the current challenges and directions for future development are elucidated. This review gives a summary of hybrid micro/nanostructures with particular emphasis on laminar structures, 2D/3D colloidal crystals, and derived structures. In the design and construction of these structures, biomimicry is of crucial importance. As can be seen from the examples discussed in this review, numerous micro/nanostructures rely on hybrid materials. Current challenges and future perspectives of the field are elucidated.

Abstract:Nano-optic retarders and polarizers based on dielectric and metal nano-gratings were fabricated by UV-nanoimprint lithography. Different from conventional nanostructure-based optical devices, atomic layer deposition, a highly uniform and conformal deposition process, were utilized to fill trenches of the both dielectric and metal nano-gratings. The resulted immersion nano-grating design opens a path for innovative nano-grating based optical devices and integrated optical devices. As an example, a high-performance fully-buried aluminum nanowire-gird polarizer was developed which allowed us to achieve a monolithically integrated visible circular polarizer. The ability to integrate multiple nanostructure-based optical layers opens a path for innovative integrated optical devices as well as a new strategy for driving both miniature and cost.
