Abstract:Decent quality of indoor air is important for health and wellbeing of building users. We live, work and study in indoors of various types of buildings. Often people are exposed to pollutants at higher concentrations than these that occur out-doors. Continual investigation of indoor air quality is needed for ensuring comfort and healthy environment. Measuring and analysis of occurrence of physical, chemical and biological factors is the first step for suggestion of optimization measures. Inside school buildings there are often inadequate indoor climate conditions such as thermal comfort parame-ters or ventilation. The aim of this study was determination of indoor environmental quality in selected offices in the building of elementary school in Slovakia. The values of operative temperature were not within the optimum range of values for the warm period of the year in one of the monitored offices. The intensity of illumination was lower in the two offices. Low levels of particulate matters were measured except the one office where permissible value was exceeded by 7.6%.

Abstract:From a public health perspective, it is necessary to improve indoor air quality (IAQ) in schools. This study aims to assess the state of perceived IAQ in Slovenian school classrooms and its association with the selected IAQ factors to improve the understanding of perceived IAQ for designing public health interventions aimed to improve IAQ in schools. A national cross-sectional study was performed in all 454 Slovenian primary schools in the school year 2019/2020. The questionnaires were filled out by the 3rd-grade teachers with the support of the caretakers. Teachers rated the IAQ in the classroom as the worst in winter. We found that the teachers' perceived IAQ in the classroom is statistically significantly associated with the micro location of the school and some of the IAQ factors. Poor IAQ is associated with reduced manual airing of classrooms due to the thermal comfort of the occupants. Interventions should be aimed at improving occupants' adaptive behaviors to increase the frequency of natural ventilation in classrooms.

Abstract:Slow population growth has limited the construction of new schools, leading to the renovation of existing buildings to achieve energy efficiency goals. While improvements are made to thermal insulation, heating and ventilation systems often remain outdated, presenting challenges in maintaining indoor air quality (IAQ) in schools, where children spend a significant amount of time in densely populated classrooms, and whose health is more affected by IAQ than that of adults. Therefore, this study assessed the possibilities to achieve IAQ requirements in schools ventilated by opening the windows by monitoring the carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration, temperature, and relative humidity (RH) fluctuation. The results of the study have shown that it is not feasible to achieve the defined IAQ parameters in classrooms through window opening alone. The measured CO2 concentration during lessons in many cases exceeded the limit value of 1000 ppm and did not decrease to ambient levels when the windows were opened during the break. Additionally, the internal air temperature dropped below the normative when lessons started, and RH was significantly below the recommended minimum value on all days. It was also found that the use of thermal energy decreases evenly because of inefficient air change leaving no direct economic leverage for the installation of efficient ventilation systems.

Introducing the comfort performance gap in new educational buildings: a case study

Abstract:Providing adequate indoor environmental quality is crucial in educational settings. In this paper, we implemented and tested a framework that collects occupant feedback and investigated correlations between teachers comfort and the operational characteristics of an Austrian school building in September and October 2022. Initial results show that the measured average temperatures (23.1 t-25.1 deg C) in all rooms are on the upper limit of various recommendations, such as comfort guidelines for building operation or workplace regulations. This assessment is in line with the feedback we received from the teachers. A literature review demonstrated that childrens comfort temperatures are lower compared to adults. Hence, it is reasonable to conclude that indoor temperatures during the survey period were inadequate for the pupils either, even without direct feedback. An analysis of the CO2 measurements showed that, during school hours, approximately 20% of all measurement values were above 1000 ppm, with 2% above 1500 ppm. CO2 levels above 1000 ppm are considered hygienically critical, with the latest research proposing to lower the limits below 800 ppm to ensure a healthy and effective learning environment. While we only assessed the challenges of providing a healthy indoor environment for an educational building in Austria, our literature review shows similar challenges and research efforts worldwide. Our analysis demonstrates the need for adapting design requirements, especially for school buildings, acknowledging the different comfort needs of adults and children and the importance of high indoor air quality for providing an optimum learning environment. Future research should focus on testing adapted indoor environmental quality requirements for schools, especially in urban areas, and how to integrate real-time occupant feedback in the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems.

Abstract:Abstract The current study was realized in three schools located in regional Romania. The results of this article draw upon the diversity of school’s typologies analyzed: new, existing refurbished and old. The analysis was carried using answers given by 138 children to a survey that covered questions related to their learning environment and health problems. Children were asked to rank the perceived quality of several indoor environment parameters (IAQ, outdoor air quality, illumination, noise), the stressful and friendly nature of the schools, and their overall satisfaction. The survey was accompanied by experimental measurements of air temperature, humidity, noise and illuminance levels, CO2 concentration and dust particles. The most prevalent symptoms experienced at school were sneezes (34.1%), fatigue (18.9%), runny nose (14.5%), stuffed/blocked nose (11.6%), and headache (8.7%). Out of the five main health symptoms reported at school, the majority has been recorded in the renovated school.

Abstract:The paper aims are to assess and evaluate the hygiene and quality of the indoor environment in selected indoor areas of the kindergarten, to analyse the construction, technical and technological solutions of the building in accordance with the concept of designing healthy buildings and their environment. The paper will propose the operation of the building in terms of hygiene and perceived air quality. The paper assumes in-situ monitoring of the indoor environment of the nursery school using a multifunctional measuring instrument for analysing the quality of the indoor environment and comfort (Testo 480 + accessories). The research goal is to update and expand information on the quality of the indoor environment of kindergartens during the heating season. The aim is to design a concept for improving the quality of the environment in nursery schools and to prepare documents for relevant recommendations, including recommendations concerning, for example, construction or utility materials for nursery schools and the mode of their operation.

Abstract:Associations have been shown between poor classroom indoor air quality (IAQ) and schoolchildren's risk of asthma, increased absenteeism, and impaired performance on standardized tests. Mechanically ventilated classrooms often lack an adequate fresh air supply. There is also concern that outdoor pollutants, particularly vehicle exhaust products, may penetrate classrooms. The purpose of this work was to characterize IAQ in elementary school classrooms and estimate average effective fresh air ventilation rates under cold, mild, and warm season conditions. IAQ measures were made in third-grade classrooms of 12 elementary schools. Particulate matter, CO2, CO, NO2, total VOCs, and formaldehyde concentrations, as well as relative humidity and temperature, were measured for 24-h periods in each season. Effective fresh air ventilation rates were estimated using a transient mass balance modeling approach. The schools measured had generally adequate temperature and humidity control, extremely low non-occupant related pollutants, and little to no incursion of outdoor vehicle-related pollutants. However, there was a lack of adequate fresh air ventilation in many cases. Ventilation adequacy varied within the schools across seasons but with no consistent pattern, perhaps reflecting variations in class size as well as seasonal demands on the HVAC systems and/or HVAC seasonal operating mode. Transient mass balance method effective fresh air ventilation estimates near or above ASHRAE-recommended fresh air ventilation rates for people-related pollutants corresponded well with good CO2 control in the classrooms.

Abstract:Nowadays, there is an increased trend in the construction of nearly zero energy buildings which can be also characterized as green buildings. Several studies confirm that wooden buildings fulfil these requirements. However, there is no detailed research related to the quality of the indoor environment in new wooden family houses. For this reason, this paper focuses on monitoring of the indoor environmental quality in a selected wooden family house. Short-term measurements are aimed at investigation of physical parameters (air temperature, relative humidity, air velocity and noise) and chemical factors such as concentrations of particulate matters and CO2. At the same time, environmental impacts were also assessed for impact categories such as: global warming potential (GWP), ozone depletion potential (ODP) acidification potential (AP), eutrophication potential (EP), photochemical ozone creation potential (POCP) ex-pressed as kilogram CO2eq, CFC11eq, SO2eq, PO43–eq and kilogram of C2H4eq within “Cradle to Grave” boundary by using the life cycle assessment (LCA) method. The main contribution of this study is demonstration that wooden build-ings have substantial share in the reduction of environmental impacts. So far, results indicate that the design of wooden houses correspond with the increasing demands of occupants in terms of environmental, social and energy performance.
Examination and Optimization of Classroom Indoor Environments in China’s Hot Summer and Cold Winter Regions

Abstract:The school's indoor environment significantly affects students' health and learning performance. Although related studies have been carried out in many regions, only a few have examined indoor classroom environments and proposed the energy-saving optimization of heating and ventilation in winter in China's hot summer and cold winter areas. This study aims to comprehensively investigate classroom indoor environmental quality in China's hot summer and cold winter areas, and propose targeted optimization strategies. It first examined the indoor environment, including indoor air, acoustic, visual, and thermal quality, of two typical middle schools. The indoor CO2 concentration in winter was found to be unsatisfactory. Subsequently, how the indoor layout, outdoor wind and occupancy density influence indoor CO2 concentration was examined through simulation, which indicated that high occupancy density is the main cause. Finally, this study proposed several ventilation optimization strategies and performed an energy analysis to maintain sufficient air quality and a comfortable thermal environment in high-density classrooms. The results show that compared with the intermittent mode, the fixed ventilation and heating mode could maintain a more comfortable indoor environment and achieve a 30% energy saving. A reference for the improvement of classroom indoor environment in hot summer and cold winter areas was provided.

Abstract:Abstract Today in addition to the design of structures, layout solutions, and the design of suitable materials, the modern construction industry also addresses meeting the requirements for the energy performance of a building, with which the topic of the quality of the indoor environment is fully intertwined. Comfort in the use of buildings, and especially the provision of thermal comfort, is a fundamental aspect in the design of technical equipment systems, where a properly selected system regulating the indoor environment can affect b oth t he e nergy p erformance o f t he building and the quality of the indoor environment. One of the important factors is the air quality, where the main factor that af-fects the indoor environment is the concentration of CO 2 , whose value affects the biological functions of the human organism. The subject of this research is an evaluation of the indoor air quality in a kindergarten because children are more sensitive to environmental influences.

Abstract:Indoor air quality is a characteristic that depends on air pollutants inside a building and that can be affected by different ventilation strategies. There is strong evidence linking poor indoor air quality (IAQ) and harmful health effects, especially on vulnerable collectives, such as children in schools. Due to this concern, this work aims to provide guidance on the design of highly efficient ventilation strategies to improve the air quality of schools' classrooms. For this, IAQ monitoring has been carried out in eight educational in real conditions centres using CO2 concentration as an IAQ indicator. Variables such as the presence of students and their number, activity developed in the classroom and ventilation strategy used together with break time duration have been also recorded to analyse their influence on CO2 concentration levels. Concluding results have allowed us to determine the maximum number of students allowed in a closed room to maintain CO2 levels at normal concentrations and the time needed to reduce these CO2 levels depending on the ventilation strategy adopted. Moreover, it has been discussed how surrounding school conditions (pollution or noise) and the building isolation are impacting the final IAQ in the classrooms studied.
Optimising Mechanical Ventilation for Indoor Air Quality and Thermal Comfort in a Mediterranean School Building

Abstract:The growing concern over indoor air quality (IAQ) and thermal comfort in classrooms, especially post-COVID-19, underscores the critical need for optimal ventilation systems to bolster students' health and academic performance. This study explores the potential for improving indoor air quality and thermal comfort in the most energy- and cost-optimal manner using a demand-controlled ventilation (DCV) system coupled with a carbon dioxide control sensor. This is achieved through precooling via night purging in summer and by introducing warmer corridor air into the classroom in winter. The methodology employs both computer simulation and a real-world case study. The findings reveal that while natural ventilation in winter can achieve IAQ standard (EN 16798-1) thresholds for classrooms under favourable outdoor conditions, it results in uncontrolled and excessive energy loss. The retrofitted DCV system, however, maintained CO2 levels below the recommended thresholds for at least 76% of the year depending on classroom orientation and only exceeded 1000 ppm for a maximum of 6% of the year. This study also indicates that utilising the external corridor as a sunspace can further enhance the system's efficiency by preheating incoming air. This comprehensive study highlights the significant potential for integrating mechanical and passive solutions in school ventilation systems. This contributes to the attainment of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 11 and ensures healthier and more energy-efficient learning environments that benefit both students and the environment.

Abstract:Abstract Currently, thermal comfort and indoor air quality are essential elements in designing modern and intelligent buildings or improving existing ones, so that they would provide proper indoor conditions. The article focuses on the thermal sensations of the students of Kielce University of Technology and determining whether the given parameters of the internal environment contributed to their well-being. 164 people aged 16 - 24 participated in the study, which was conducted with the use of a microclimate meter and questionnaires. It turned out that the temperature range from 19.3 °C – 27.6 °C is acceptable and comfortable for nearly 78% of people. As a result of further analysis, it turned out that the research group definitely prefers and feels better in colder temperatures.

Abstract:Thermal comfort and lighting conditions are essential aspects of indoor environmental quality. They are considered to influence the productivity of room users. The paper presents the experimental test results of research conducted in the university educational building of Kielce University of Technology (Central Poland) using anonymous questionnaires and physical measurements of indoor air parameters with a high-precision microclimate meter. It covers the analysis of the subjective assessment of thermal sensations, acceptability and preference, as well as productivity, lighting and air quality in eleven rooms (both lecture rooms and classrooms). The study analyses the impact of the indoor environment (mostly air temperature and illuminance) on the subjective sensations of the respondents they expressed in the questionnaires. The experiments have enabled us to provide valuable insights into developing the proper indoor environmental conditions to maximise room users' comfort and productivity.

Abstract:The article presents the results of measurements of temperature, relative humidity and CO2 concentration in six single-family houses’ bedrooms located in Poland, in Wrocław and vicinity, during two climatic seasons: summer–autumn and winter. Two buildings with natural ventilation (NV) were tested, three with mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MV) and one with hybrid ventilation (HV)—mixed mode natural and mechanical. The behavior of residents regarding opening windows was analyzed and the influence of the changing internal and external conditions on their active reactions was examined. The analysis confirms and adds to the global discourse on the key impact of user behavior on securing healthy indoor air quality in housing, regardless of ventilation system or building energy standard. A disconnect exists between the observed window opening practices and typical design principles, assuming adjustment to a given ventilation system or changing weather conditions. The observations showed that in both analyzed seasons it was possible to obtain a good quality internal environment, in terms of CO2 level, regardless of the ventilation system used in the building. However, unfavorable results were observed for one bedroom, in which the inhabitants do not adapt their behavior to local technical conditions. Taking into account the level of relative humidity (RH), much higher values were observed in the NV bedrooms in both analyzed periods. The obtained results were divided into IAQ classes in accordance with the EN 16798-1. The recorded values of the internal temperature confirm the significant influence of the location of the room in the building and the actions taken by the residents.

Abstract:The hospital setting is among the more complex and challenging indoor environments with its different users and risk factors. The sick building syndrome (SBS) in association with environmental risk factors and measurements of environmental parameters remains underresearched. The aim of our study was to combine the results of i) self-perceived indoor environmental quality in the observed hospital wards, ii) SBS symptoms and iii) identified deviations of the measured environmental parameters from the legally required and/or recommended values for the hospital environment. Based on that, we aimed to identify measures for improving indoor environmental quality. A cross-sectional study was conducted at a Slovenian hospital in 2019 on a sample of 258 healthcare workers and 78 allied health professionals/other employees. Data were gathered using the standardized questionnaires MM NA Hospital and MM NA Office. Measurements of environmental parameters were conducted at ten measurement locations at different hospital wards/units. The most frequently self-reported SBS symptoms over the previous three months included fatigue (healthcare workers: 42.6%; allied health professionals/other employees: 30.8%) and a heavy head (healthcare workers: 29.8%; allied health professionals/other employees: 20.5%). The most frequent environmental risk parameters were unpleasant odor (39.1%) and stale air (34.6%). A significant difference in the measurements of environmental parameters (air temperature, relative humidity, horizontal illumination, carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration, and noise level) was identified at measurement locations of hospital wards/units compared to the legally required and/or recommended values (p = <0.001). Our study underlines the importance of raising awareness among healthcare workers and allied health professionals/other employees about ensuring appropriate environmental factors in the hospital setting.

Abstract:Maintaining indoor environmental (IEQ) quality is a key priority in educational buildings. However, most studies rely on outdoor measurements or evaluate limited spatial coverage and time periods that focus on standard occupancy and environmental conditions which makes it hard to establish causality and resilience limits. To address this, a fine-grained, low-cost, multi-parameter IOT sensor network was deployed to fully depict the spatial heterogeneity and temporal variability of environmental quality in an educational building in Sydney. The building was particularly selected as it represents a multi-use university facility that relies on passive ventilation strategies, and therefore suitable for establishing a living lab for integrating innovative IoT sensing technologies. IEQ analyses focused on 15 months of measurements, spanning standard occupancy of the building as well as the Black Summer bushfires in 2019, and the COVID-19 lockdown. The role of room characteristics, room use, season, weather extremes, and occupancy levels were disclosed via statistical analysis including mutual information analysis of linear and non-linear correlations and used to generate site-specific re-design guidelines. Overall, we found that 1) passive ventilation systems based on manual interventions are most likely associated with sub-optimum environmental quality and extreme variability linked to occupancy patterns, 2) normally closed environments tend to get very unhealthy under periods of extreme pollution and intermittent/protracted disuse, 3) the elevation and floor level in addition to room use were found to be significant conditional variables in determining heat and pollutants accumulation, presumably due to the synergy between local sources and vertical transport mechanisms. Most IEQ inefficiencies and health threats could be likely mitigated by implementing automated controls and smart logics to maintain adequate cross ventilation, prioritizing building airtightness improvement, and appropriate filtration techniques. This study supports the need for continuous and capillary monitoring of different occupied spaces in educational buildings to compensate for less perceivable threats, identify the room for improvement, and move towards healthy and future-proof learning environments.

Abstract:Air quality in school environments is of particular interest due to the significant amount of time children spend in these settings. Children, being a particularly sensitive demographic, are exposed to various pollutants at school or kindergarten. In this regard, our studies have focused on monitoring the concentrations of three main categories of pollutants: VOCs (volatile organic compounds), VICs and PM (particulate matter). We conducted two experimental campaigns in seven classrooms within public educational institutions. The average concentration values of TVOC (total volatile organic compounds) ranged from 554 μg/m3 to 2518 μg/m3, of CO2 from 1055 ppm to 2050 ppm, of NH3 (Ammonia) from 843.2 μg/m3 to 1403.4 μg/m3, of PM2.5 from 25.1 μg/m3 to 89.9 μg/m3, and of PM10 from 63.7 μg/m3 to 307.4 μg/m3. In most instances, the registered values exceeded the limit values set by national or international regulations. Furthermore, this study highlights the significant impact of a heat recovery ventilation system in improving indoor air quality by substantially reducing the levels of CO2 and PM. However, it also underscores the need for further measures to more efficiently reduce TVOC concentrations. The aim of our paper was to enhance the understanding of pollution levels in school environments, increase awareness of the importance of indoor air quality, and highlight the adverse effects of polluted air on the health of occupants.

Simulating the Natural Seasonal Ventilation of a Classroom in Poland Based on Measurements of the CO2 Concentration

Abstract:There are many different factors affecting indoor air quality: environmental ones such as temperature, humidity, human activities within the building, smoking, cooking, and cleaning, but also external pollutants such as particulate matter, biological contaminants, and viruses or allergens. This study investigated the indoor air quality (IAQ) of a primary-school classroom in Cracow, Poland, based only on CO2 concentration levels exhaled by occupants. In the 1960s, over a thousand schools were built in Poland using similar technology. Most of them are still in use, and in many cases, modernization works are being carried out to improve their building envelope and the comfort of their use. The analyzed school is one of several hundred similar ones in southern Poland. Therefore, analyzing the possibilities of improving IAQ is an important topic, and the results can be used in the modernization process for many other buildings. Measurements indicated that the CO2 levels significantly exceeded acceptable standards, signaling poor air quality during usage time. This problem was connected mainly with the low efficiency of the natural ventilation system being used in the classroom. It is worth emphasizing that this type of ventilation system is the most commonly used ventilation solution in Polish schools. To address this problem, the classroom environment was simulated using CONTAM software, and the model was validated by comparing the simulated measurement data against the collected measurement data. Next, simulations for the entire heating season in Cracow were conducted, revealing that the IAQ remained consistently poor throughout this period. These findings highlight the persistent problem of inadequate ventilation in the classroom, which can have adverse effects on the health and performance of students and teachers. This article shows the usefulness of CONTAM for modeling not only gravity ventilation but also the window-opening process. The validated CONTAM model will be subsequently utilized to simulate annual IAQ conditions under various ventilation strategies in order to identify the most effective methods for maintaining acceptable IAQ while minimizing energy consumption. In our future analysis, the validated model will be used to test the following systems: demand-controlled ventilation (DCV), exhaust ventilation, and DCV/balanced ventilation with heat recovery.

Abstract:Indoor air quality (IAQ) and indoor air pollution are critical issues impacting urban environments, significantly affecting the quality of life. Nowadays, poor IAQ is linked to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, allergic reactions, and cognitive impairments, particularly in settings like classrooms. Thus, this study investigates the impact of indoor environmental quality on student health in a university classroom over a year, using various sensors to measure 19 environmental parameters, including temperature, relative humidity, CO2, CO, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), particulate matter (PM), and other pollutants. Thus, the aim of the study is to analyze the implications of the indoor microclimate for the health of individuals working in the classroom, as well as its implications for educational outcomes. The data revealed frequent exceedances of international standards for formaldehyde (HCHO), VOC, PM2.5, NO, and NO2. HCHO and VOCs levels, often originating from building materials and classroom activities, were notably high. PM2.5 levels exceeded both annual and daily standards, while NO and NO2 levels, possibly influenced by inadequate ventilation, also surpassed recommended limits. Even though there were numerous exceedances of current international standards, the indoor microclimate quality index (IMQI) score indicated a generally good indoor environment, remaining mostly between 0 and 50 for this indicator. Additionally, analyses indicate a high probability that some indicators will exceed the current standards, and their values are expected to trend upwards in the future. The study highlighted the need for better ventilation and pollutant control in classrooms to ensure a healthy learning environment. Frequent exceedances of pollutant standards can suggest a significant impact on student health and academic performance. Thus, the present study underscored the importance of continuous monitoring and proactive measures to maintain optimal indoor air quality.
