Abstract:The two-dimensional finite-volume model ‘Hemat’ was refined to model the pathways, fate and decay factors of faecal indicator organisms for an integrated river and coastal basin water system. The numerical model was developed, calibrated and tested by modelling faecal indicator organism inputs from river sources. A comprehensive field data set was available including intensive offshore survey data collected during a two-week period; these were used as a time series for the verification of the hydrodynamic model. River discharges and water quality data were used as boundary and initial conditions for the model. The impact of alternative land-use management strategies on the water quality of the receiving estuarine and coastal waters was investigated by modelling a series of 14 scenarios. Generally, the model results show that the faecal indicator organism input from point sources of sewage effluent dominated during dry weather and base flow conditions. On the other hand, riverine sources (such as diffuse catchment sources) significantly dominated the concentrations in the bay both during and after rainfall events. Finally, it was found that a reduction in land used for animal husbandry can considerably reduce the critical peak concentration occurring after heavy rainfall events.
Impact of Escherichia coli from stormwater drainage on recreational water quality: an integrated monitoring and modelling of urban catchment, pipes and lake

Abstract:In recent years, recreational waterbodies are increasingly favoured in urban areas. In spite of the growing concerns for maintaining the required bathing water quality, the impacts of stormwater drainage are still poorly controlled. In this context, this study originally develops an integrated urban catchment-pipes-lake monitoring and modelling approach to simulate the impacts of microbial quality from stormwater drainage on recreational water quality. The modelling system consists of three separated components: the urban catchment component, the 3D lake hydrodynamic component and the 3D lake water quality component. A series of processes are simulated in the model, such as rainfall-discharge, build-up, wash-off of Escherichia coli (E. coli) on urban surfaces, sewer flows, hydrothermal dynamics of lake water and transport and mortality of E. coli in the lake. This integrated model is tested for an urban catchment and its related recreational lake located in the Great Paris region. Continuous monitoring and samplings were performed at the stormwater drainage outlet and three different sites in the lake. Comparing the measured data with simulation results over 20 months, the modelling system can correctly represent the E. coli dynamics in the stormwater sewer systems and in the lake. Although uncertainties related to parameter values, pollution sources and E. coli mortality processes could be further discussed, the good performance of this modelling approach emphasizes a promising potential for urban bathing water quality management.

Abstract:In recent years health risks associated with the non-compliance of bathing water quality have received increasing worldwide attention. However, it is particularly challenging to establish the source of any non-compliance, due to the complex nature of the source of faecal indicator organisms, and the fate and delivery processes and scarcity of field measured data in many catchments and estuaries. In the current study an integrated hydro-bacterial model, linking a catchment, 1-D model and 2-D model were integrated to simulate the adsorption-desorption processes of faecal bacteria to and from sediment particles in river, estuarine and coastal waters, respectively. The model was then validated using hydrodynamic, sediment and faecal bacteria concentration data, measured in 2012, in the Ribble river and estuary, and along the Fylde coast, UK. Particular emphasis has been placed on the mechanism of faecal bacteria transport and decay through the deposition and resuspension of suspended sediments. The results showed that by coupling the E.coli concentration with the sediment transport processes, the accuracy of the predicted E.coli levels was improved. A series of scenario runs were then carried out to investigate the impacts of different management scenarios on the E.coli concentration levels in the coastal bathing water sites around Liverpool Bay, UK. The model results show that the level of compliance with the new EU bathing water standards can be improved significantly by extending outfalls and/or reducing urban sources by typically 50%.

Abstract:In recent years, considerable investment has been committed to sewerage infrastructure and new sewage treatment plants in the catchment surrounding an estuarine basin along the north-west coast of England. Although this capital investment has resulted in a marked reduction in the input of bacterial loads, relatively high counts of faecal indicator organisms are still being encountered in the coastal receiving waters, and the local bathing waters continue to fail on occasions to comply with the European Community (EC) Bathing Water Directive (1976) mandatory standards. Details are given herein of a comprehensive modelling study aimed at quantifying the impact of various bacterial inputs into the estuary and surrounding coastal waters on the bathing water quality. The model domain includes the coastal area and the entire estuary (namely the Ribble) up to the tidal limits of its tributaries. Faecal coliforms have been used as the main water quality indicator organisms. The numerical model developed for this study combines a depth integrated two-dimensional coastal model and a cross-sectionally integrated one-dimensional river model, and is capable of predicting water surface elevations, velocity fields and faecal coliform concentration distributions across the entire model domain. The hydrodynamic model was calibrated using water level and velocity measurements from three surveys and then validated against measured data from three other surveys. In order to predict the faecal coliform concentration distributions, variable faecal coliform decay rates were used, i.e. different values of decay rates were applied to the coastal and riverine waters, for day- and nighttime, and for wet and dry weather conditions. The maximum and minimum decay rates used were 2.32/day and 0.71/day for the dry and wet weather surveys, respectively. The model was then applied to (i) assess the impact of previous discharge strategies and investigate the effectiveness of future capital investment works and (ii) predict the impact of a range of strategic options, including: the effects of adding UV treatment, constructing storm water storage tanks and incorporating various combined sewer overflow (CSO) discharge scenarios for different weather conditions.

Abstract:This paper introduces an integrated spatial and temporal modeling system developed mathematically for assessing microbial contaminants on animal-grazed farmlands. The model uses fecal coliform, specifically Escherichia coli, as an indicator of fecal contamination and describes the sources, sinks, transport processes, and fate of E. coli contaminants in catchments and associated streams. Spatial features include grazing location, land topography, distance to a nearby stream, and distance through the stream network to the outlet. Temporal features are population dynamics on the land surface, in flow, and on streambeds. The model applies the principles of conservation of mass balance on two different types of pools: grid cells on land surfaces and networked stream segments. The model aims to improve the prediction of the effects of different land management strategies on the fecal contamination of waterways. This is achieved by characterizing the movement of fecal contaminants from land to streams and in-stream mobilization. Processes of attenuation, diffusion, and transport govern the movement. Our study site is a hill land catchment with an area of 140 ha and is used exclusively for animal grazing. The model was calibrated with previous research results, and then tested using the data collected at the outlet of the catchment. The sensitivity of the model predictions was analyzed for different scenarios: effect of stock rate, attenuation rate, and flow volumes. The similar pattern between monitored and predicted E. coli concentration proved that the model captures the key features that control the population dynamics of fecal contaminants. Further experiments are required to expand the model's functionality for covering more mitigation options.

Abstract:This paper details a numerical model developed to predict the fate and transport of faecal bacteria in receiving surface waters. The model was first validated by comparing model predicted faecal bacteria concentrations with available field measurements. The model simulations agreed well with the observation data. After calibration, the model was applied to investigate the effects of different parameters, including: tidal processes, river discharges from the upstream boundaries and bacteria inputs from the upstream boundaries, wastewater treatment works (WwTWs), rivers and combined sewer overflows (CSO), on the concentrations of faecal bacteria in the Ribble Estuary. The results revealed that the tide and upstream boundary bacteria inputs were the primary factors controlling the distribution of faecal bacteria. The bacteria inputs from the WwTWs in the model domain were generally found not to have a significant impact on distribution of faecal bacteria in the estuary.

Abstract:The paper describes a modelling study of near-shore coastal waters, undertaken to assess the impact of various bacterial input loads on the receiving waters in a coastal basin in the UK. Total and faecal coliforms, used as the indicators for bathing water quality under the European Union (EU) Bathing Water Directive, were numerically modelled using a 2D depth integrated hydro-environmental model. Details are given of the governing equations and solution methods used in the numerical model, together with a discussion of the recent development in faecal bacterial indicator modelling. Details are also given of a field data collection exercise, which involved initially collecting existing information on effluent input loads and followed by an intensive field survey. Using the water quality model, the mortality rate of the pathogen bacteria was investigated. Three methods were used to represent the relationship between the decay rate and the level of solar radiation including: a constant decay rate, day- and night-time decay rates and a solar radiation related time varying decay rate. Relatively close agreement between model predicted and measured total and faecal coliform concentration distributions were obtained for different day- and night-time decay rates and time varying decay rates. No significant differences were found in the optimum decay rates for total and faecal coliform levels. Finally, the impact of the individual inputs on the bathing water quality of the basin was also statistically and numerically investigated. Results showed that the River Irvine was the most significant input during high river flows, and that under these conditions the bathing waters were likely to fail to comply with the European Union Bathing Water Directive. For base river flow conditions the Meadowhead effluent input was found to be critical for both total and faecal coliform level predictions.

Abstract:Surface water quality is frequently impacted by acute rainfall driven pollutant sources such as sewer overflows. Understanding the risk of exposure from faecal pollution from short term impacts is challenging due to a paucity of high-resolution data from river systems. This paper proposes practical modelling approach for forecasting arrival time and durations of elevated E. coli levels based on hydrological routing of catchment source loadings, characterized by distributed and remote sensing techniques (including sewer overflow monitoring). The model is calibrated and validated using new high resolution E. coli datasets from a UK catchment featuring both diffuse field runoff and storm overflow impacts. Hourly/Bihourly sampling of E. coli was undertaken in the river following different rainfall events across a range of seasonal conditions. The model provides a good estimate of arrival times and durations of elevated E. coli periods following rainfall events. Model outputs suggest that key sources in the catchment are event specific, with sewer overflow spills being more significant following short, intense rainfall events.

Abstract:A community of aquatic macrophytes has an important role in reducing nutrient load and organic and inorganic contaminants in storm/runoff water. However, minimal information is available regarding the efficiency of constructed wetlands for cleaning runoff water from urban areas, especially in the tropical and subtropical regions. This study investigated the effectiveness of constructed wetland integrated with aquatic macrophytes for removal of chemical and microbial contaminants in the storm/runoff water from the urban areas. Water samples were monthly collected in the constructed wetland from the inlet of storm/runoff water, middle and outlet of discharge, and analyzed for physical and chemical properties, concentrations of nutrients, metals, and fecal coliform (FC) during the period of November, 2016 to April, 2018 in St. Lucie county, Florida, USA. The dominant plant species in the constructed wetland included cattail (Typha latifolia), waterthyme (Hydrilla verticillata) and water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), and periphyton filamentous algae (Spirogyra). The improvement of pH and electrical conductivity (EC) was not obvious, but the concentration of total suspended solids was significantly reduced. This system was effective in the removal of fecal coliform (by 68%) and particulate phosphorus (P, 72%), followed by total P (42%) and N (35%). Concentrations of metallic pollutants including cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), chromium (Cr), and copper (Cu) were mostly below the detection limit (<1 ppb) except for zinc (Zn), of which concentration was reduced by 23%. The removal of FC was consistently effective all the year round, whereas the removal of total N, P and particulate-P was effective in spring and summer, and less in autumn and winter. These results indicate that constructed wetland with a natural aquatic plant community can effectively reduce the loads of nutrients, metals, and fecal coliforms in water column. Regular harvest of aquatic macrophytes communities and collecting litters may further improve the system efficiency for cleaning storm water from urban areas.

Abstract:Forecasting the level of waterborne bacterial pathogens (E. coli as indicator) in recreational waters using a deterministic model has been a very effective tool for water quality prediction and management. The fate and transport of pathogens in water is a complex process controlled by various factors of hydrodynamics, hydrology, chemistry, and microbiology. To better understand the importance of these factors and their roles in the inactivation, transport, and removal of pathogens, it is extremely important to enhance the reliability and effectiveness of a model by increasing the accuracy of simulation and prediction. This paper reports the results of sensitivity analyses on each of these factors using a calibrated hydrodynamic model coupled with a water quality model for temperature variation and E. coli transport. A nearshore region in southern Lake Michigan was used as the modeling domain in this research. Based on the sensitivity analysis method of differential analyses coupled with one-at-a-time design, the results show that the sensitivity of the different parameters can be ranked in decreasing order as follows: solar insolation, temperature correction factor, dispersion coefficients, tributary loading, wind velocity, and settling velocity. More detailed investigation of sunlight-related parameters using Chapra's formula shows that t(90) is predominant over other factors on E. coli inactivation caused by insolation. The sensitivity of sunlight-related parameters can be ranked in decreasing order as follows: t(90), theta(d), k(e), alpha, and theta(l). The model used in this study, together with the sensitivity analysis results, can be used as a reference for similar pathogen transport investigations in other freshwater bodies. Abstract:Wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) discharges of microcontaminants negatively impact freshwater streams, underscoring the need for accurately mapping wastewater-derived contamination in water bodies across Europe (EU). In this study, we present a fast and open-source code for a microcontaminants fate and transport (MFT) model, capable of simulating contamination at a high resolution (15 arc second scale) across the EU. The model was developed using the best publicly available hydrological (HydroSHEDS) and sanitation (UWWTD) datasets and was rigorously calibrated, with a goodness of fit of 77.5% as measured by the . Importantly, the model demonstrated the ability to predict wastewater-derived contamination in water bodies, making it a valuable tool for planning the upgrade of WWTPs and improving the ecological condition of freshwater streams in the EU.

Abstract:Sponge city construction (SCC) in China, as a new concept and a practical application of low-impact development (LID), is gaining wide popularity. Modelling tools are widely used to evaluate the ecological benefits of SCC in stormwater pollution mitigation. However, the understanding of the robustness of water quality modelling with different LID design options is still limited due to the paucity of water quality data as well as the high cost of water quality data collection and model calibration. This study develops a new concept of 'robustness' measured by model calibration performances. It combines an automatic calibration technique with intensive field monitoring data to perform the robustness analysis of storm water quality modelling using the SWMM (Storm Water Management Model). One of the national pilot areas of SCC, Fenghuang Cheng, in Shenzhen, China, is selected as the study area. Five water quality variables (COD, NH3-N, TN, TP, and SS) and 13 types of LID/non-LID infrastructures are simulated using 37 rainfall events. The results show that the model performance is satisfactory for different water quality variables and LID types. Water quality modelling of greenbelts and rain gardens has the best performance, while the models of barrels and green roofs are not as robust as those of the other LID types. In urban runoff, three water quality parameters, namely, SS, TN and COD, are better captured by the SWMM models than NH3-N and TP. The modelling performance tends to be better under heavy rain and significant pollutant concentrations, denoting a potentially more stable and reliable design of infrastructures. This study helps to improve the current understanding of the feasibility and robustness of using the SWMM model in sponge city design.

Numerical Modeling of Microbial Fate and Transport in Natural Waters: Review and Implications for Normal and Extreme Storm Events

Abstract:Degradation of water quality in recreational areas can be a substantial public health concern. Models can help beach managers make contemporaneous decisions to protect public health at recreational areas, via the use of microbial fate and transport simulation. Approaches to modeling microbial fate and transport vary widely in response to local hydrometeorological contexts, but many parameterizations include terms for base mortality, solar inactivation, and sedimentation of microbial contaminants. Models using these parameterizations can predict up to 87% of variation in observed microbial concentrations in nearshore water, with root mean squared errors ranging from 0.41 to 5.37 log10 Colony Forming Units (CFU) 100 mL−1. This indicates that some models predict microbial fate and transport more reliably than others and that there remains room for model improvement across the board. Model refinement will be integral to microbial fate and transport simulation in the face of less readily observable processes affecting water quality in nearshore areas. Management of contamination phenomena such as the release of storm-associated river plumes and the exchange of contaminants between water and sand at the beach can benefit greatly from optimized fate and transport modeling in the absence of directly observable data.

Abstract:Predicting the rate of Escherischia coli (E. coli) loss in a river network is one of the key conditions required in the management of bathing waters, with well verified numerical models being effective tools used to predict bathing water quality in regions with limited field data. In this study, a unique finite volume method (FVM) one-dimensional model is firstly developed to solve the mass transport process in river networks, with multiple moving stagnation points. The model is then applied to predict the concentration distribution of E. coli in the river Ribble network, UK, where the phenomena of multiple stagnation points and different flow directions appear extensively in a tidal sub-channel network. Validation of the model demonstrates that the proposed method gives reasonably accurate solution. The verification results show that the model predictions generally agree well with measured discharges, water levels and E. coli concentration values, with mass conservation of the solution reaching 99.0% within 12 days for the Ribble case. An analysis of 16 one-year scenario runs for the Ribble network shows that the main reduction in E. coli concentrations occurs in the riverine and estuarine regions due to the relatively large decay rate in the brackish riverine waters and the long retention time, due to the complex river discharge patterns and the tidal flows in the regions.
Stormwater monitoring using on-line UV-Vis spectroscopy

Abstract:Stormwater runoff contains a myriad of pollutants, including faecal microbes, and can pose a threat to urban water supplies, impacting both economic development and public health. Therefore, it is a necessity to implement a real-time hazard detection system that can collect a substantial amount of data, assisting water authorities to develop preventive strategies to ensure the control of hazards entering drinking water sources. An on-line UV-Vis spectrophotometer was applied in the field to collect real-time continuous data for various water quality parameters (nitrate, DOC, turbidity and total suspended solids) during three storm events in Mannum, Adelaide, Australia. This study demonstrated that the trends for on-line and comparative laboratory-analysed samples were complimentary through the events. Nitrate and DOC showed a negative correlation with water level, while turbidity and total suspended solids indicated a positive correlation with water level during the high rainfall intensity. The correlations among nitrate, DOC, turbidity, total suspended solids and water level are the opposite during low rainfall intensity. Nitrate, one of the main pollutants in stormwater, was investigated and used as a surrogate parameter for microbial detection. However, the microbiological data (Escherichia coli) from captured storm events showed poor correlations to nitrate and other typical on-line parameters in this study. This is possibly explained by the nature of the stormwater catchment outside of rain events, where the sources of bacteria and nutrients may be physically separated until mixed during surface runoff as a result of rainfall. In addition, the poor correlations among the microbiological data and on-line parameters could be due to the different sources of bacteria and nutrients that were transported to the stormwater drain where sampling and measurement were conducted.

Abstract:Due to the increasing economic and cultural value of bathing waters and the shellfish industry in the UK and worldwide, water quality in estuarine and coastal waters has attracted considerable public attention in recent years. To obtain accurate predictions of the concentration distributions of faecal indicator organisms (FIOs) in coastal waters for better management of bathing water compliance, it is necessary to build an integrated modelling system to predict the complete diffuse and point source inputs from river and catchment basins. In the present paper, details are given of the development of such an integrated modelling system for simulating the transport and decay processes of FIOs, from catchment areas upstream from the coastal region, in which a distributed catchment module, a 1D river network module and a 2D estuarine and coastal module are linked dynamically by boundary inputs and outputs. Extensive measured data from the catchments, river networks and estuaries have been collated to determine the model parameters. Verification results of the distribution of water levels, flows and velocities, and suspended sediment and Escherichiacoli concentrations, at controlled monitoring sites are presented, which show that the integrated model predictions generally agree well with the measurements, although locally appreciable errors can occur. The model results also highlight the importance of including the flux of FIOs via sediments being an important factor in terms of assessing the quality of bathing waters. The main factors influencing the relatively high concentration values in the bathing region are analysed, based on the model predictions and measured data, with four categories of FIO concentration levels being reviewed.

To intercept and treat runoff, low-impact or "green infrastructure" approaches such as using biofilters are adopted. Yet, actual biofilter pollutant removal is poorly understood; removal is often studied in laboratory columns, with variable removal of viable and culturable microbial cell numbers including pathogens. Here, to assess bacterial pollutant removal in full-scale planted biofilters, stormwater was applied, unspiked or spiked with untreated sewage, in simulated storm events under transient flow conditions, during which biofilter influents versus effluents were compared. Based on microbial biomass, sequences of bacterial community genes encoding 16S rRNA, and gene copies of the human fecal marker HF183 and of the Enterococcus spp. marker Entero1A, removal of bacterial pollutants in biofilters was limited. Dominant bacterial taxa were similar for influent versus effluent aqueous samples within each inflow treatment of either spiked or unspiked stormwater. Bacterial pollutants in soil were gradually washed out, albeit incompletely, during simulated storm flushing events. In post-storm biofilter soil cores, retained influent bacteria were concentrated in the top layers (0–10 cm), indicating that the removal of bacterial pollutants was spatially limited to surface soils. Abstract:In coastal area, raw wastewater can be directly discharged in the sea during extreme rain events or failure of the sewage network. The highly urbanized and touristic area of Nice is directly exposed to this risk. In order to protect the bathing population and to apply the European regulation (DCE, 2000), Nice municipality has decided to work on a forecasting tool of transport and fate of fecal bacterial indicators such as Escherichia coli. This paper deals with the first step of this approach which consists in developing a three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation coupled with water quality parameters. The model used is based on Reynolds-Averaged Navier–Stokes's equations for the calculation of the velocities and water depth (TELEMAC3D), and wave energy balance equation to account for the wave induced current (TOMAWAC). Two field measurements were conducted on a real wastewater pollution coming from a sewage pipe located at −38 m depth. The first campaign has validated the vertical diffusion of the effluent through the water column by the means of variable depth samples and has stressed the hourly variability of sewage bacterial quality. Due to the lack of data regarding this last point, the model could not be fully validated. The second campaign has been designed to overcome this issue and to gather all the data needed to proceed to the validation of our hydro-ecological simulation. The comparison of the field measurements and the simulations has successfully demonstrated the accuracy of the model. But the uncertainty associated with the laboratory analysis (MPN) are high, making the calibration and validation processes a complex task. Nevertheless, further research needs to be done regarding the variability of microbial quality in order to develop an operational tool allowing the forecast of bacterial pollution. The next step of this study will be to establish the hourly variation of microbial quality in the wastewater during dry and raining periods.

Abstract:The decay rate of faecal bacteria is influenced by many environmental factors, such as, sunlight intensity, temperature, salinity, sediment concentrations etc, however, it was normally treated as a first order constant process in hydro-environmental model studies The paper detailed a numerical model developed for faecal bacteria fate and transport in receiving waters in a coastal basin in the UK. Faecal coliform, used as the indicators, were numerically modelled using a hydro-environmental model. Dynamic decay rate, which includes effect of salinity, temperature and light intensity were used in current study, compare to most other studies constant decay rate were normally used. In particular, the numerical model used in this study includes the effects of sediment on bacteria transport processes in surface water. This model was first validated by comparison with the field measurements of faecal bacteria concentrations. The model simulations agreed well with the observation data.
