Abstract:The rivers and streams of the large urban centers in Southeast Brazil are increasingly being degraded, demanding expanded conservation efforts. This study was conducted in the Grande River, one of the main tributaries of the Billings Complex, a reservoir that is a strategic fresh water resource for the São Paulo metropolitan region. Water quality, habitat features and fish fauna were investigated at seven sites along the longitudinal gradient with the aim of identifying the distribution patterns and relative contributions of the environmental factors. The water samples and environmental characteristics were recorded, and fish were collected during the rainy (January to March) and dry seasons (July and August) of 2009. The water quality varied along the river, with higher values of conductivity, fecal coliforms and total phosphorus in the lower reach, indicating a strong influence of the urban area. Twenty-two fish species were recorded, two of which are considered endangered. A canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated marked differences in species composition between the river’s upper and lower reaches, which was mainly attributed to vegetation cover and the presence of different meso-habitats, such as riffles and pools. Trychomycterus spp. and Astyanax paranae were associated with the upper reaches, while Astyanax fasciatus and Astyanax bockmanni, Cyphocharax modestus, Hoplias malabaricus and Hypostomus ancistroides occurred in the lower reaches. Despite the disturbance in water quality and riparian vegetation in the lower river section, no detectable changes in community structure were observed. However, the presence of some tolerant species, such as Astyanax fasciatus, Hoplosternum littorale and Hypostomus ancistroides, may indicate that the community is experiencing initial stages of disturbance.

Abstract:Severo-Neto, Francisco ; Ceron, Karoline ; Ceneviva-Bastos, Mônica ; Covich, Alan P. ; Casatti, Lilian ; Trophic interactions have been a long-standing field of interest in ecology, helping to understand the relationships between organisms and how ecosystems function. In this study, we describe the trophic relationships of fish from karst environments in headwater streams of the upper Paraguai River basin. We analyzed the stomach contents of 81 fish species from the Serra da Bodoquena, calculated the metrics associated with the trophic network, incorporating the body size component in the analyses, and evaluated the participation of each species in network/module connectivity. The analyzed community trophic organization was based mainly on autochthonous items which were the most consumed items for about 30% of fish species. The trophic network showed a modular pattern without nestedness or specialization. However, nestedness was significant within each module, demonstrating a hierarchical compound topology (i.e., species with few connections interacted with subsets of the pairs of more connected species within each module). We also found a relationship between network connectivity and fish body size, in which small species tend to connect modules through generalist feeding strategies. Thus, we demonstrated a still little-known role of small species in fish trophic networks, and how trophic segregation occurs in a highly diverse community from Pantanal headwater streams.

Abstract:Invasive fish species can play an important role in aquatic ecosystems and have a significant impact on ecosystem dynamics, which influences primary production, planktonic communities, and aquatic macrophytes. The presence and density of invasive fish can disrupt nutrient ratios and ecological processes, leading to potential ecological consequences for invaded habitats. This experimental investigation focused on the invasive armored catfish species P. ambrosettii (Loricariidae) and postulated that high densities of armored catfish in invaded environments may affect nutrient cycling due to high N: P excretion rates. Furthermore, we sought to identify how these changes in nutrient concentration impact phytoplankton, protozooplankton, and the biomass of two invasive macrophytes. We carried out a 30-day experimental study at the Nupélia Applied Ecology Laboratory at the State University of Maringá with 20 fiber cement mesocosms with a volume of 135 L. These mesocosms had continuous water circulation and were used to simulate the natural conditions of lakes invaded by P. ambrosettii . We simulated five treatments that represented density at different levels of invasion: control (no fish), low-density (one fish), medium–low (two fish), medium–high (three fish) and high-density (four fish). The treatments affected abiotic variables such as pH, dissolved oxygen, and electrical conductivity, and nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations increased with increasing fish density, as expected. In turn, nutrient concentrations had effects on chlorophyll-a and macrophyte biomass. The chlorophyll-a and Eichhornia crassipes biomass were positively related to the increase in phosphorus, while Hydrilla verticillata showed a positive relationship with both nutrients nitrogen and phosphorous. The zooplankton community showed different density behaviors in relation to treatments. Its composition was influenced by the different treatments, and it underwent significant variations along the nutrient gradient. As predicted, the different densities of P. ambrosettii led to changes in the structure of the ecosystem. In treatments with higher fish densities, the environment was characterized by low oxygenation, high conductivity, and high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus. These conditions favored the dominance of phytoplankton and aquatic macrophytes, while the density and species composition of zooplankton was low. The effects observed in this experimental study contribute to insights into the field of invasion biology and its relationships with nutrient dynamics. The effects that may arise from the invasion and high population density of the armored catfish Pterygoplichthys in invaded locations reinforce the importance of understanding these processes in the functioning of the ecosystem and how this directly or indirectly impacts the dynamics of coexisting communities in natural environments.

The influence of selected environmental parameters and habitat mosaics on fish assemblages in a South American estuary

Abstract:Coastal environments are faced with constant habitat modification and biodiversity loss due to human occupation. Estuaries are considered to be highly productive and shelter heterogeneous habitats such as mangrove forests, tidal creeks, tidal mud flats and sandy beaches, which are important for the maintenance of natural resources. The present study aims to evaluate how different shallow juvenile habitats (sandy beaches, mangrove shoreline habitats and dense macrophyte habitats) influence fish during their early life stages in a tropical estuary of Brazil. Monthly samples using a beach seine net from July 2012 to June 2013 were collected in eight shallow areas of the São Mateus River estuary. The fish assemblage comprised mainly juvenile and small-sized fish, which included ecologically and commercially important species. Small recruits of Atherinella brasiliensis and Ctenogobius boleosoma were most abundant in the autumn, while Rhinosardinia bahiensis and Centropomus undecimalis were highly abundant during the winter. The water salinity recorded in the mid and lower estuarine portions was the most important variable for the distribution of A. brasiliensis and Sphoeroides spengleri , whereas Anchovia clupeoides , C. undecimalis , C. parallelus and Gobionellus oceanicus were positively correlated with the water depth of the upper estuarine portion. The fish species T. paulistanus , Genidens genidens and Achirus lineatus were related to the water turbidity in the upper portion. Thus, the heterogeneous shallow water habitats (and their associated environmental parameters) of the São Mateus River estuary are potential nursery grounds for the early life stages of a variety of fish species, which highlights the importance of these areas for local biodiversity management.

Abstract:Hydrological dynamics are crucial in fish ecology. To evaluate the effect of the flood pulse on the feeding ecology of Doras higuchii in the reduced-flow section of the Belo Monte dam, Xingu River, Brazil. Collections were conducted between December 2020 and November 2021. The fish were measured and had their stomachs removed. Muscle tissue was also extracted for stable-isotope analysis. Stomach contents were inspected to assess diet, testing the influence of hydrological periods by using GLM. In addition, we evaluated the effect of the flood pulse on the δ 13 C and isotopic ratios of individuals In total, 362 specimens of D. higuchii were analysed, highlighting a diet mainly on the basis of sediment (74.9%) and aquatic insects (24.8%), not varying between periods characterising the species as a specialist for having detritivorous habit, as well as the extension of the trophic niche. There was variation in food intensity, with higher average food consumption in the flood period. The isotopic composition (δ 13 C and δ 15 N) also did not differ between periods. Finally, δ 15 N did not vary by length class. This information helps understand the interface between environmental and biological factors in an environment affected by a hydroelectric dam. Our results may help fill gaps in knowledge about the diet of doradid fishes.

Abstract:Stomach content analysis in fish provides information about the diet, different trophic groups in the ichthyofauna and concerning the transfer and energy obtaining. The aquatic environment become receptacle for emerging pollutant such as plastic, that become available to the biota. The goal of this study was to describe the feeding of the three catfish species A. luniscutis , C. spixii and G. genidens, in a sexual and spatial approach, considering that are important catfish from a Marine Protected Area in Brazil (Cananeia-Iguape Estuarine-Lagoon Complex – CIELC), subjected to differential anthropogenic disturbances. The analyzed species had a diverse diet, with the occurrence of Crustacean fragments of several groups (e.i.: amphipoda, decapods, mysidae, palinura, caridea, penaeidae, stomatopoda and brachyura), Algae, Polychaeta, Ophiuroidea, Mollusca, vegetable matter, and fish fragments (e.i. otoliths, eggs, scale, fins, and fish debris). The food items of Cathorops spixii were composed mainly of Polychaeta, vegetable matter, and Crustacea. On the other hand, the main food items of Aspistor luniscutis were fish fragments, algae, and vegetable matter and in Genidens genidens predominated Crustacea and vegetable matter. Possible plastic fragments were found and had filamentous format with blue, red, and black color variations. The data of this research contribute to the promotion of knowledge about feeding in three species of catfish. Furthermore, it highlights the pollution of an environmental marine protection area.

Using δ15N of periphyton and fish to evaluate spatial and seasonal variation of anthropogenic nitrogen inputs in a polluted Brazilian river basin

Abstract:Nitrogen stable isotope ratios (δ15N) of aquatic organisms have been used widely as indicators of the intensity of anthropogenic N loading into watersheds; nevertheless, this approach has rarely been applied in the Neotropics. Considering the potential utility of δ15N to assess aquatic pollution, the present study aims to use the δ15N of periphyton and its direct consumers (catfishes from the genus Hypostomus) to evaluate spatial and seasonal variation of anthropogenic nitrogen inputs. The study was carried out in 16 sites distributed along the Rio das Velhas basin, a Brazilian river basin highly impacted by anthropogenic activities, especially the discharge of domestic and industrial sewage from a region with more than five million human inhabitants. We correlated the δ15N of periphyton and Hypostomus with nitrate (NO3−) and ammonium (NH4+) concentrations in water from each site, during both the dry and wet seasons. The δ15N of periphyton and Hypostomus was correlated, and varied with NO3− and NH4+ concentrations. NO3− was considerable consistent with high δ15N values (especially in the dry season), reaching values above 30‰ in periphyton and 36‰ in Hypostomus. In contrast, NH4+ was correlated with a more depleted δ15N (especially in the wet season), reaching values of −1‰ in periphyton and 5‰ in Hypostomus. However, periphyton was more sensitive than Hypostomus to changes in NO3− and NH4+ concentrations between seasons. In addition, the Δ15N (enrichment of primary consumer relative to the primary producer) was higher in polluted sites than in unpolluted sites (especially in the wet season), suggesting that Hypostomus may be feeding on resources other than periphyton. We conclude that the δ15N of periphyton and Hypostomus reflects reactive nitrogen concentrations and suggests the occurrence of different nitrogen sources within this basin due to diverse anthropogenic activities. Unfortunately, the mixing and diversity δ15N sources mean the values of periphyton and Hypostomus are best used as an indicator of the intensity of anthropogenic nitrogen loading, but not as tracers of individual nitrogen sources.

We evaluated the variation in the ecomorphological characteristics of fish fauna considering the forest cover percentage in streams of the Iguaçu River basin, an ecoregion characterized by high endemism. Environmental variables were measured alongside fish collection by electrofishing with four samples per site. We evaluated 12 ecomorphological indices for 26 species. The combination of environmental variables resulting from forest cover loss and silting led to habitat homogenization, a significant factor in morphological structuring. Streams with lower forest cover showed a prevalence of morphological traits associated with enhanced performance in silted margins, such as caudal fin aspect ratio, dorsal and anal fin relative area, caudal peduncle relative width, pelvic fin aspect ratio. In contrast, the pectoral fin aspect ratio and ventral mouth orientation were traits positively related to the rocky substrate and forest streams. Thus, habitat loss and alteration have imposed selection pressures on species with more specialized traits and habitat use. These findings underscore the critical role of preserving forest cover in maintaining fish diversity.

To assess the possible impacts caused by the introduction of fish species from fishing grounds in natural areas in the Baixada Santista watershed (São Paulo, State, Brazil), the Aquatic Species Invasiveness Screening Kit (AS-ISK) was used. The study showed that escaped species, primarily caused by the water drainage system of fishing ground tanks and dispersion by birds, can cause significant damage to the conservation of native species. Therefore, it is imperative to establish management practices for cultivated species and frequently monitor the physical-chemical and microbiological parameters of water quality in ponds. African catfish (Clarias gariepinus), Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), Carp (Cyprinus carpio) and Trahira (Hoplias malabaricus) showed a high risk of invasion. Conversely, Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) was classified as medium risk, highlighting the importance of this species for breeding in fish farming systems and recreational fishing activities conducted in fishing grounds.

Abstract:The introduction of non-native aquarium fish species has modified the composition of fish assemblages worldwide. This anthropogenic impact alters not only the richness/abundance of local assemblages but also the taxonomic and functional composition among them. To investigate this phenomenon, we conducted a standardized sampling program in degraded headwater creeks located in the largest ornamental aquaculture center of Brazil, with the aim of quantifying spatial and temporal changes in taxonomic and functional diversity induced by fish escapes. Data were organized in two periods: "historical", which included the native species pool of the region, and "current" (divided in "past" and "present"), which included all native and non-native species recorded during 2015–2017 (past) and 2022 (present). Fish assemblages showed taxonomic and functional differentiation through time, and the continuous introduction of non-native fish from 2015 to 2022 contributed to increase species richness in local assemblages. Trait diversity did not differ across native/non-native fish assemblages, and non-native assemblages had smaller body sizes than natives. Our study provides strong evidence that escapes of non-native ornamental fish induces changes in taxonomic and functional fish diversity in small creeks, representing a significant threat to these fragile ecosystems.

Abstract:Evaluation of traits and functional diversity make assessments more robust when determining the nature and strength of the relationship between species and ecosystem processes. We investigated how anthropic interference and physical and limnological characteristics of streams changed fish functional trait distribution and their functional diversity in Neotropical streams located in Southern Brazil, encompassing Paraná, Paranapanema, Ivaí, and Pirapó river basins. We tested the hypotheses (a) that streams with very low human pressure show higher values of functional diversity due to the great variety of habitats and food resources; (b) streams with higher human pressure and more deforested are more related to fish functional traits as body morphologies indicative of weaker swimming ability and scraping feed morphology. We found that current velocity and stream width were correlated with compression and depression indices of the ventral region of the animals. Faster‐flow environments favored higher values of relative height of the caudal peduncle, relative head width, and relative mouth height values. These functional traits relate to habitat use and the size of consumed food. Altogether, these findings indicate possible partitioning of resources that would enable the co‐occurrence of species. Our results showed that human impacts influenced functional diversity and functional trait distribution. Urban land use and high conductivity were correlated with detritivorous species and species with internal reproduction. Poecilia reticulata dominated urban streams. We argue that the conservation of fish diversity in Neotropical streams requires orderly land use and occupation to avoid reducing species and functional diversity, and hence ecosystem function. in Portuguese is available with online material.

Abstract:This study investigated the impact of micropollutants on fish health from Segredo hydroelectric reservoir (HRS) along the Iguaçu River, Southern Brazil, contaminated by urban, industrial, and agricultural activities. This is the first comprehensive study assessment in the river after the severe drought in the 2020s in three fish species from different trophic levels Astyanax spp. (water column depth/omnivorous), Hypostomus commersoni (demersal/herbivorous), and Pimelodus maculatus (demersal/omnivorous). Animals, water, and sediment samples were collected from three distinct sites within the reservoir: Floresta (upstream), Iratim (middle), and Station (downstream). The chemical analysis revealed elevated concentrations of metals (Al, Cu, Fe) and the metalloid As in water, or Cu, Zn, and As in sediment, surpassing Brazilian regulatory limits, while the organic pollutants as DDT, PAHs, PCBs, and PBDEs were found under the Brazilian regulatory limits. The metal bioaccumulation was higher in gills with no significant differences among sites. The species Astyanax spp and H. commersoni displayed variations in hepatosomatic index (HSI) and P. maculatus in the condition factor index ( K ) between sites, while adverse effects due to micropollutants bioaccumulation were observed by biochemical, genotoxic, and histopathological biomarkers. The principal component analysis and integrated biomarker response highlighted the upstream site Floresta as particularly inhospitable for biota, with distinctions based on trophic level. Consequently, this multifaceted approach, encompassing both fish biomarkers and chemical analyses, furnishes valuable insights into the potential toxic repercussions of micropollutant exposure. These findings offer crucial data for guiding management and conservation endeavors in the Iguaçu River.

Trophic structure of a nektobenthic community exploited by a multispecific bottom trawling fishery in Northeastern Brazil

Abstract:We used complementary stable isotope (SIA) and stomach content (SCA) analyses to investigate feeding relationships among species of the nektobenthic communities and the potential ecological effects of the bottom trawling of a coastal ecosystem in northeastern Brazil. Carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) compositions were determined for five basal sources and 28 consumers, from zooplankton to shrimp and fish species. Fishes and basal sources showed a broad range of δ15N (fishes: 6.49-14.94‰; sources: 2.58-6.79‰) and δ13C values (fishes: -23.86 to -13.71‰; sources: -24.32 to -13.53‰), while shrimps and crabs exhibited similar nitrogen and carbon ratios. Six trophic consumer groups were determined among zooplankton, crustaceans and fishes by SIA, with trophic pathways associated mostly with benthic sources. SCA results indicated a preference for benthic invertebrates, mainly worms, crabs and shrimps, as prey for the fish fauna, highlighting their importance in the food web. In overall, differences between SCA and the SIA approaches were observed, except for groups composed mainly for shrimps and some species of high δ15N values, mostly piscivorous and zoobenthivores. Given the absence of regulation for bottom trawling activities in the area, the cumulative effects of trawling on population parameters, species composition, potentially decreasing the abundance of benthic preys (e.g., shrimps, worms and crabs) may lead to changes in the trophic structure potentially affect the food web and the sustainability of the fishery.
Influence of characteristics of tropical reservoirs on the fish trophic guilds structure

Abstract:Reservoirs and their morphological characteristics are expected to alter the continuity of matter, energy, and nutrient transfer, which can modify resource availability, food supply, and fish trophic structure. We studied 29 reservoirs in Southern Brazil to verify the main factors related to the structure of their fish trophic guilds. We tested the hypothesis that environmental and morphological variables influence the organization of fish trophic guilds more than spatial variables (i.e., hydrological distance between the reservoirs). Additionally, we tested which variables linked to environmental, morphological, and spatial characteristics are most associated with the predominance of herbivores, omnivores, detritivores, insectivores, invertivores, and piscivores fishes. To assess the influence of these predictors, we used variance partitioning with distance-based redundancy analysis. Contrary to our assumptions, the structure of fish trophic guilds revealed that the spatial features were the most important predictors. Still, associations between and with the other predictors also revealed significant explanations. Trophic guilds that showed spatial segregation were herbivores and omnivores which can be associated with the evolutionary processes from the locality of each reservoir in distinct ecoregions. Overall, environmental and morphological characteristics like concentration of total nitrogen, age, size, and water retention time are associated with a greater or lesser abundance of herbivores, detritivores, omnivores, and piscivores. Our findings have important implications for the management of reservoirs by helping to guide policies and actions involving fishing stocks.

Abstract:Changes in physical habitat that are associated with anthropogenic disturbances facilitate the establishment and expansion of non-native species in receiving environments. Here, we evaluated the relative importance of ecosystem variables for the presence and abundance of the invasive fish Poecilia reticulata in Brazil. We collected fish species and assessed environmental variables through an established physical habitat protocol in 220 stream sites located in southeastern and midwestern Brazil. A total of 14,816 P. reticulata individuals were collected in 43 stream sites, and 258 variables that describe the physical characteristics of streams were assessed, including measures of channel morphology, substrate size and type, habitat complexity and cover, riparian vegetation cover and structure, and human influence. Dimensionality reduction methods were employed to limit redundancy, resulting in a smaller set of the most relevant environmental variables. Subsequently, we used random forest models to assess the relative importance of these variables in determining the presence and abundance of P. reticulata. The presence of this invasive fish was primarily explained by human disturbance variables related to urbanization (total impact, pavement, artificial structure areal cover, riparian canopy cover, electrical conductivity, mean thalweg depth, and sand), whereas channel morphology (mean bank full height) and fish cover variables (natural fish cover, and aquatic macrophyte areal cover) were important predictors of its abundance. Identifying which ecosystem variables are favorable to the establishment of non-native species is an important step in preventing future biological invasions, as well as managing those that already occur.

Abstract:The invasion of predators can result in taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic losses in the structure of fish fauna causing ecological damage in the invaded area. We tested the hypothesis that the invasion of the silver croaker ( Plagioscion squamosissimus ) altered the structure of fish assemblages in a Neotropical reservoir. Using data from long-term fisheries of the Jaguari Reservoir, Brazil, we calculated taxonomic (richness, evenness and beta diversity), functional (richness, evenness and beta diversity) and phylogenetic (richness, dispersion and beta diversity) metrics of diversity of fish assemblages per year and correlated them with the abundance of the invasive fish. We found that the invasion of P . squamosissimus affected all three facets of diversity. Alpha diversity decreased after the invasion, while beta diversity (both taxonomic and functional) and phylogenetic dispersion increased as P. squamosissimus abundance increased. Plagioscion squamosissimus was successful in the invasion process and became the most abundant predator in the reservoir few years after the first record. The generalist reproductive and feeding strategies of this predator, and the distant phylogenetic relationship with the local ichthyofauna may have facilitated its success. As a top predator in the food network, the invader likely interacted with the community mainly through predation and competition, thereby reshaping the fish community structure. We conclude that the P. squamosissimus invasion negatively affected the local biodiversity by detrimental changes to its taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic structure.

Abstract:Small-sized fishes play a crucial ecological role in the dynamics of riverine systems, but their low dispersal capacity and high endemism make them highly vulnerable to environmental change. In the Neotropical region, each watershed typically supports unique populations of small-sized fishes, and in this study, we used Psalidodon paranae (Characidae) as a model to understand the relationships between its population patterns (including age, growth, and reproductive biology) and environmental characteristics. Standardised monthly sampling of P. paranae was carried out at ten sampling sites from June 2010 to May 2011, and environmental variables (including water quality and river characteristics) were measured to characterise these sites. Multivariate techniques and generalised linear models were used to analyse the longitudinal distribution of P. paranae , which was significantly influenced by river depth and width, and suspended solid concentrations. Linear and non-linear models were used to describe the length–weight relationship (resulting in an isometric pattern, b = 3.0256) and the growth patterns ( L ∞ = 21.8 cm, k = 0.51 year −1 , and Φ′ = 2.3989). The analysis of gonadal maturity was combined with somatic and reproductive indices, allowing the identification of spawning periods (occurring mainly during the austral summer) and areas (sites with headwater characteristics). Our results indicate that P. paranae has a good adaptability to the different environmental conditions, and this first assessment of age and growth parameters constitutes a reference for monitoring and further evaluation of long-term changes.

Abstract:The Anil River estuary (ARE), which is crucial for São Luís Island's socioeconomic well-being, faces substantial human pressure due to its urban location, hastening the eutrophication process. This study, which was conducted from 2022 to 2023, aimed to assess trophic levels across the ARE. Using a multiparametric probe, we analysed the pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, oxygen saturation, salinity, and total dissolved solids quarterly during the rainy and dry seasons at six sampling points. The nutrient analysis included nitrite, nitrate, ammonium ions, phosphate, total nitrogen (TN), and total phosphorus (TP). Trophic index (TRIX) values categorised the ARE as eutrophic (sector 1) or hypereutrophic (sector 2). The dry season exhibited relatively high trophic levels, indicating that the ARE was hypereutrophic. Sector 2, influenced by concentrated nutrients and chlorophyll-a, exhibited increased trophic status from domestic and industrial effluent discharge. Rainy season data at the downstream from the point 3 recorded the maximum DIN:DIP ratio, indicating phosphorus limitation. Monitoring estuarine trophic states is vital for kerbing eutrophication and preserving local biodiversity in the anil river estuary.

Abstract:This study examined the effect of habitat types and ontogenetic stages on the diet shift of Coreius guichenoti (Sauvage and Dabry de Thiersant, 1874), a critically endangered fish species. Based on the stable isotope analysis method, the following was explored: the variations in δ13C and δ15N values, isotopic niche width and four basal food sources (Mollusks, Macrocrustaceans, Aquatic insect larvae and particulate organic matters (POMs)) among three essential habitat types (the spawning ground, natural riverine feeding and nursery area, and Three Gorges Reservoir area) and between two ontogenetic stages (immature and fully mature stages). A diet shift associated with habitat type changes was observed, but there were no obvious differences in diet composition between the two ontogenetic stages. Dietary plasticity and a preference for specific foods were the important determinants of feeding behavior through the life history of this species. POM was important for the survival of this species in the resource-limited spawning ground, but this species fed more heavily on higher-order consumers in resource-abundant areas. This study highlights the importance of maintaining free connectivity among different habitats (particularly spawning grounds) to ensure the long-term sustainability of potamodromous fish species as well as the full investigation of all types of critical habitats for understanding the trophic ecology of a single fish species.
