Abstract:Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) has been widely used to improve the biosynthesis of secondary metabolites such as triterpenoid saponins in medicinal plants. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms remain poorly understood. Differing from roots that accumulate protopanaxatriol-type saponins, Panax notoginseng leaves with a lower biomass mainly contain protopanaxadiol (PPD)-type saponins. Therefore, it is interesting to explore whether MeJA can activate the biosynthesis of PPD-type saponins in P. notoginseng leaves. In this study, we found MeJA could effectively induce the accumulation of PPD-type saponins, including ginsenoside Rb1, Rc, Rb2, Rb3 and notoginsenoside Fa, Fe in P. notoginseng leaves based on a newly established high-performance liquid chromatography method. Transcriptome analysis showed that differentially expressed genes (DEGs) induced by MeJA were mainly enriched in “terpenoid backbone biosynthesis”, “biosynthesis of unsaturated fatty acids”, “sesquiterpenoid and triterpenoid biosynthesis”, “fatty acid metabolism”, and “phenylpropanoid biosynthesis”. Furthermore, the expression profile and quantitative real-time PCR analysis of DEGs showed that MeJA could positively induce the molecular response of endogenous jasmonic acid (JA) signaling pathway, and increased PPD-type saponins mediated by MeJA in P. notoginseng leaves may be related to the high expression of FPS, SS, SE, DS and UGTs, and the low expression of CYP716A53v2 and β-AS. The results provide a molecular understanding for MeJA-elicited biosynthesis of triterpenoid saponins and facilitate the further characterization of the genes responsible for biosynthesis of PPD-type saponins in P. notoginseng leaves.
Methyl Jasmonate Facilitates Wound Healing of Chinese Yam Tubers Via Positively Regulating the Biosynthesis and Polymerization of Suberin Polyphenolics

Abstract:Suberin is a cell wall-associated heteropolymer composed of suberin polyaliphatics (SPA) and suberin poly -phenolics (SPP), which confers a hydrophobic barrier to plants against dehydration and pathogen invasion. Jasmonic acid (JA) plays a positive role in wound-induced SPP deposition in kiwifruit and potato tubers, but the mechanism underlying the regulation of JA on wound healing of Chinese yam tubers remains unknown. In this study, the biochemical and physiological responses to methyl jasmonate (MeJA) and diethyldithiocarbamic acid (DIECA, an inhibitor of JA biosynthesis) treatments in wound yam tubers were investigated. The results showed that exogenous MeJA promoted the production of endogenous JA with increased gene expressions of lip-oxygenase (LOX) and 12-oxo-phytodienoic acid reductase (OPR) in wound tubers. The activities and gene ex-pressions of phenylalanine ammonialyase (PAL), cinnamic acid 4-hydroxylase (C4H) and 4-coumarate-CoA ligase (4CL) in wound tubers were pronouncedly enhanced by MeJA, along with increase of SPP monomers, especially, hydroxycinnamic acids (HAs). Meanwhile, MeJA increased the activities and gene expressions of peroxidase (POD), NADPH oxidase (NOX), polyamine oxidase (PAO), and the generation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which were likely to be involved in the polymerization of SPP monomers resulting in SPP deposition. Conversely, inhibition of JA biosynthesis by DIECA reversed the positive impact of MeJA on wound healing process. The results indicate that rapid wound healing in Chinese yam tubers could be induced by MeJA via stimulating phenylpropanoid metabolism, POD activity and H2O2 generation involved in SPP deposition.

Abstract:The interplay of plant hormones and glucose (Glu) in regulating glucosinolate accumulation in Arabidopsis thaliana was investigated in this study. Glucose-induced glucosinolate biosynthesis was enhanced significantly by the addition of jasmonic acid (JA), whereas the synergistic effect of salicylic acid (SA) and Glu was less obvious. The enhanced glucosinolate accumulation is associated with elevated expression of genes in glucosinolate biosynthetic pathway, as well as the transcription factors involved in their regulation, such as MYB28, MYB29, MYB34, and MYB122. The induction of indolic and aliphatic glucosinolates after treatment with JA and Glu in JA-insensitive mutants, coi1, jar1, and jin1, was compromised. Moreover, the effect of JA and Glu on glucosinolate contents was dramatically reduced in Glu-insensitive mutants, rgs1-2 and abi5-7. These results indicate a crosstalk between JA and Glu signalling in the regulation of glucosinolate biosynthesis. JA signalling, RGS1 (the putative membrane receptor of Glu signalling), and ABI5, are involved in the synergistic effect of JA and Glu on glucosinolate accumulation.

Abstract:Flavonoids are rich active components in plants, widely used in pharmaceuticals and nutritional supplements. Flavonoids are the important active healthcare components in Astragalus membranaceus. Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) is an important growth regulator that promotes the accumulation of flavonoids in a variety of plants. However, the molecular regulatory mechanism of the flavonoid synthesis in A. membranaceus after MeJA treatment is unclear. We conducted metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses of A. membranaceus subjected to MeJA treatment were conducted. A group of 118 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) identified were primarily associated with the biosynthesis pathways of flavones. Flavonoid biosynthesis was one of the most enriched pathways in differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Multiple-omics analysis revealed an association between gene expression levels and the metabolic flux within the flavonoid pathway. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA) identified five co-expression modules and nineteen hub genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis. AmMYB30 interacted with the promoters of AmCHS, AmFLS, and AmF3H, thereby regulating the flavonoid signaling pathway in A. membranaceus. Elevated expression of AmMYB30 in hairy roots resulted in heightened levels of AmCHS, AmFLS, and AmF3H expression, along with an increase in total flavonoid content, indicated AmMYB30 induced flavonoid accumulation after MeJA treatment. In summary, this study identified key regulators for flavonoid biosynthesis and offered valuable insights for understanding the regulation of flavonoid biosynthesis in A. membranaceus.

Abstract:Abstract Background Safflower ( Carthamus tinctorius L.) is an important cash crop, of which the dried tube flower is not only an important raw material for dyes and cosmetics but also an important herb widely used in traditional Chinese medicine. The pigment and bioactive compounds are composed of flavonoids (mainly quinone chalcones), and studies have reported that MeJA can promote the biosynthesis of quinone chalcones, but the mechanism underlying the effect of MeJA in safflower remains unclear. Here, we attempt to use metabolomics and transcriptome technologies to analyse the molecular mechanism of flavonoid biosynthesis under MeJA treatment in safflower. Results Based on a UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS detection platform and a self-built database (including hydroxysafflor yellow A, HSYA), a total of 209 flavonoid metabolites were detected, and 35 metabolites were significantly different after treatment with MeJA. Among them, 24 metabolites were upregulated upon MeJA treatment, especially HSYA. Eleven metabolites were downregulated after MeJA treatment. Integrated metabolomics and transcriptome analysis showed that MeJA might upregulate the expression of upstream genes in the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway (such as CHSs , CHIs and HCTs ) and downregulate the expression of downstream genes (such as F3Ms , ANRs and ANSs ), thus promoting the biosynthesis of quinone chalcones, such as HSYA. The transcription expressions of these genes were validated by real-time PCR. In addition, the promoters of two genes ( CtCHI and CtHCT ) that were significantly upregulated under MeJA treatment were cloned and analysed. 7 and 3 MeJA response elements were found in the promoters, respectively. Conclusions MeJA might upregulate the expression of the upstream genes in the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway and downregulate the expression of the downstream genes, thus promoting the biosynthesis of quinone chalcones. Our results provide insights and basic data for the molecular mechanism analysis of flavonoid synthesis in safflower under MeJA treatment.

Abstract:Panax japonicus is an important medicinal plant, and flavonoids are one of its main secondary metabolites. In this study, the main roots, fibrous roots, stems, leaves and flowers of P. japonicus were analyzed using transcriptomics and widely targeted metabolomics. Through correlation analysis of transcription and metabolism, the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway in P. japonicus was analyzed, and the accumulation of flavonoid metabolites and the expression of related genes were investigated. Metabolomics revealed a total of 209 flavonoid metabolites in P. japonicus , among which flavonoids, flavonols, flavanones and flavanonols significantly accumulated in the flowers and leaves. Transcriptome sequencing revealed that key genes in the flavonoid pathway exhibited increased expression in the flowers and leaves. The expression patterns of key genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis, including PjC4H , Pj4CL , PjCHS , PjCHI , PjF3H , PjF3'H , PjCYP , and PjPAL , are consistent with their upstream and downstream metabolites, demonstrating a significant positive correlation among them. In addition, the PjUGT gene is highly expressed in five tissues of P. japonicus , indicating that PjUGT is one of the key factors for the diversity of flavonoid glycosides. The WGCNA results showed that WRKY transcription factors exist widely in the candidate modules, and it was possible that PjWRKY transcription factors are involved in regulating the expression of key genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis and the biosynthesis of flavonoid metabolites. This study reveals spatial differences in the accumulation patterns of flavonoid metabolites in different tissues and provides important clues for further understanding the regulatory mechanisms of flavonoid metabolism in P. japonicus , thus contributing to the optimization of germplasm resources of P. japonicus and the promotion of genetic diversity analysis.

Abstract:Flavonoids are key components of licorice plant that directly affect its medicinal quality. Importantly, the MYB family of transcription factors serves to regulate the synthesis of flavonoids in plants. The MYB transcription factors represent one of the largest families of transcription factors in plants and play important roles in the process of plant growth and development. MYB gene expression is induced by a number of plant hormones, including the lipid-based hormone jasmonate (JA). Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) is an endogenous plant growth regulator that can induce the JA signaling pathway, which functions to regulate the synthesis of secondary metabolites, including flavonoids. In this study, MeJA was added to licorice cell suspensions, and RNA-seq analysis was performed to identify the differentially expressed genes. As a result, the MYB transcription factors GlMYB4 and GlMYB88 were demonstrated to respond significantly to MeJA induction. Subsequently, the GlMYB4 and GlMYB88 protein were shown to localize to the cell nucleus, and it was verified that GlMYB4 and GlMYB88 could positively regulate the synthesis of flavonoids in licorice cells. Overall, this research helps illustrate the molecular regulation of licorice flavonoid biosynthesis induced by MeJA.

Abstract:MYC transcription factors belong to a subfamily of bHLH clade. MYCs play important roles in regulating plant growth and development as well as secondary metabolite synthesis in multiple species. However, there is no complete identification and analysis of the MYC genes family in the perennial epiphytic herb Dendrobium officinale . In this study, 12 MYC transcription factors (DoMYCs) were identified in D. officinale and divided into 4 groups according to the phylogenetic analysis. Particularly, DoMYC2, DoMYC5, DoMYC8 and DoMYC11 contained a Jasmonate ZIM-domain (JAZ) interaction domain (JID) and a transcriptional activation domain (TAD) in the bHLH-MYC_N region. Furthermore, the DoMYCs promoter region harbored many cis elements for light response, hormone response, stress response, and flavonoid synthesis. To investigate whether MYC and jasmonate (JA) are involved in regulating flavonoids synthesis in D. officinale , we treated the plant with Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) to explore the expression of genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis ( DoCHS8, DoF3H, DoANS, DoAOC3, DoAOS2L, DoLOX5.2 and DoMYCs ). The results manifested that MeJA treatments affected the expression of MYC transcription factors, the key genes in flavonoid and JA biosynthesis pathways, leading to enhanced synthesis and accumulation of anthocyanins, rutin, hypericin and isoquercitrin in D. officinale pseudobulb. The further correlation analysis revealed a confidential relationship among MeJA-MYC-flavonoids in D. officinale . This study strengthened the function of MYC on MeJA-induced flavonoids synthesis in D. officinale , and the uncovered MeJA-MYC-flavonoids circuit provided a molecular basis for further investigation on the regulatory mechanism of jasmonate (JA) on secondary metabolism in medicinal plants

Abstract:ABSTRACT Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth leading cause of death in the United States and a major cause of morbidity and disability. To update national estimates and examine trends for hospitalization with COPD between 1990 and 2005, we analyzed data from the National Hospital Discharge Survey (NHDS). The results indicated that an estimated 715,000 hospitalizations with COPD, or 23.6 per 10,000 population, occurred during 2005, an increase in the number and the rate of COPD hospitalizations since 1990 (370,000 hospitalizations; rate == 15.9 per 10,000 population). To reverse increases in the number of COPD hospitalizations and decrease the burden of COPD, public health programs should continue focused efforts to reduce total personal exposure to tobacco smoke, including passive smoke exposure; to occupational dusts and chemicals; and to other indoor and outdoor air pollutants linked to COPD.

Abstract:Chinese sour jujube (Ziziphus jujuba var. spinosa (Bunge) Hu ex H. F. Chow) is one of woody plant with the same origin of medicine and food. Specialized metabolites including flavonoids are mainly distributed in its active ingredient, but the composition and biosynthesis mechanism of flavonoids in different harvest times are still unclear. Hence, the accumulation of flavonoids in Chinese sour jujube fruits from five harvest times was investigated, using a combined metabolomics and transcriptomics approach in this study. And a total of 1539 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) and 11592 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. The flavonoid, flavone, and flavanols biosynthtic pathways were significantly enriched in the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) enrichment analysis of DEGs and DAMs. Furthermore, a comprehensive regulatory network was built for flavonoids biosynthesis and it was discovered that one FLS gene, and one NAC transcription factors (TFs) with a high connection with flavonoids biosynthesis by weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). Finally, RT-qPCR analysis of 15 flavonoid biosynthesis-related key genes validated the transcriptome sequencing data. This study provides a basis for further research and utilization of flavonoids in Chinese sour jujube and which is beneficial to the metabolic engineering of flavonoids.

Postharvest methyl jasmonate treatment enhanced biological activity by promoting phenylpropanoid metabolic pathways in Lilium brownii var. viridulum

Abstract:Improving the content of bioactive components in horticultural plants, especially edible and medicinal plants, is of great significance for improving horticultural production efficiency. Methyl jasmonate (MeJA) is an important inducer of phytoactive components, but its role in the secondary metabolism of lily is still unclear. In this study, 0, 50, 100 and 200 μmol/L MeJA were used to treat postharvest scales of Lilium brownii var. viridulum. The results showed that exogenous MeJA increased the total phenolic acid content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) of lily scales several-fold in a short time (72 h), leading to higher antioxidant abilities. qRT–PCR results indicated that MeJA significantly activated the expression of key genes involved in phenylpropanoid metabolism, including phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), cinnamate-4-hydroxylase (C4H) and 4-coumarate-CoA ligase (4CL), consequently improving their enzyme activities. Consistent with the physiological and gene expression results, metabolome data indicated that multiple metabolic pathways were significantly enhanced by MeJA treatment, including the phenylpropanoid pathway and other downstream metabolic pathways. These results indicated that postharvest treatment with exogenous MeJA promoted the accumulation of secondary metabolites in lily scales by promoting the expression of related genes, which in turn enhanced its nutritional value. The data obtained in this study will not only help to elucidate the regulatory role of MeJA in the secondary metabolism of lily but also provide a low-cost, easy-to-operate, and highly efficient way to enhance the nutrients and medicinal ingredients of horticultural production.

Abstract:Abstract Background Flavonoid biosynthesis is strongly influenced by phytohormones. For example, methyl jasmonate (MeJA) enhances the flavonoid accumulation in pear. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the MeJA-induced flavonoid biosynthesis in pear is largely uncharacterized. Therefore, the transcriptome of pear calli treated with MeJA was analyzed to elucidate the mechanism regulating MeJA-mediated flavonoid biosynthesis. Results The application of exogenous MeJA significantly enhanced flavonoid accumulation, especially anthocyanin, in pear calli. A weighted gene co-expression network analysis identified the differentially expressed genes associated with MeJA-induced flavonoid biosynthesis. The MeJA treatment upregulated the expression of the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway structural genes ( PcCHS , PcCHI , PcF3H , PcDFR , PcANS , PcANR2a , and PcLAR1 ). The MYB family members were the main transcription factors regulating the MeJA-induced flavonoid biosynthesis, but the bHLH, AP2-EREBP, NAC, WRKY, and TIFY families were also involved. In addition to PcMYB10, which is a known positive regulator of anthocyanin biosynthesis in pear, several novel MYB candidates that may regulate flavonol and proanthocyanidin biosynthesis were revealed. Yeast two-hybrid and bimolecular fluorescence complementation assays demonstrated that PcMYB10 and PcMYC2 can directly interact with each other and bind to JAZ repressors (PcJAZ1 and PcJAZ2). Conclusions The PcMYB10–PcMYC2 molecular complex is likely involved in the regulation of jasmonate-mediated flavonoid biosynthesis at the transcript level. The data generated in this study may clarify the transcriptional regulatory network associated with the MeJA-induced flavonoid accumulation in pear calli and provide a solid foundation for future studies.

Abstract:Flavonoids, a class of phenolic compounds, are one of the main functional components and have a wide range of molecular structures and biological activities in Polygonatum. A few of them, including homoisoflavonoids, chalcones, isoflavones, and flavones, were identified in Polygonatum and displayed a wide range of powerful biological activities, such as anti-cancer, anti-viral, and blood sugar regulation. However, few studies have systematically been published on the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway in Polygonatum cyrtonema Hua. Therefore, in the present study, a combined transcriptome and metabolome analysis was performed on the leaf, stem, rhizome, and root tissues of P. cyrtonema to uncover the synthesis pathway of flavonoids and to identify key regulatory genes. Flavonoid-targeted metabolomics detected a total of 65 active substances from four different tissues, among which 49 substances were first study to identify in Polygonatum, and 38 substances were flavonoids. A total of 19 differentially accumulated metabolites (DAMs) (five flavonols, three flavones, two dihydrochalcones, two flavanones, one flavanol, five phenylpropanoids, and one coumarin) were finally screened by KEGG enrichment analysis. Transcriptome analysis indicated that a total of 222 unigenes encoding 28 enzymes were annotated into three flavonoid biosynthesis pathways, which were "phenylpropanoid biosynthesis", "flavonoid biosynthesis", and "flavone and flavonol biosynthesis". The combined analysis of the metabolome and transcriptome revealed that 37 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) encoding 11 enzymes (C4H, PAL, 4CL, CHS, CHI, F3H, DFR, LAR, ANR, FNS, FLS) and 19 DAMs were more likely to be regulated in the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway. The expression of 11 DEGs was validated by qRT-PCR, resulting in good agreement with the RNA-Seq. Our studies provide a theoretical basis for further elucidating the flavonoid biosynthesis pathway in Polygonatum.

Abstract:Abstract Semi-parametric methods are virtually neglected in the bankruptcy prediction literature. This paper compares the logit model, as the standard parametric model for bankruptcy prediction, to the semi-parametric model developed by Klein and Spady (1993). Special care is devoted to the effect of choice-based sampling prediction accuracy. The choice of the sampling and estimation method lead to a similar trade offs. Using choice-based sampling and logit model leads to minimization of risk exposure. Samples unbalanced across groups and the semi-parametric method allow for better overall prediction accuracy and thus profit maximization.

Abstract:Ginseng ( Panax ginseng C. A. Mey.) is an important and valuable medicinal plant species used in traditional Chinese medicine, and its metabolite ginsenoside is the primary active ingredient. The FAR1/FHY3 gene family members play critical roles in plant growth and development as well as participate in a variety of physiological processes, including plant development and signaling of hormones. Studies have indicated that methyl jasmonate treatment of ginseng adventitious roots resulted in a significant increase in the content of protopanaxadiol ginsenosides. Therefore, it is highly significant to screen the FAR1/FHY3 gene family members in ginseng and preliminarily investigate their expression patterns in response to methyl jasmonic acid signaling. In this study, we screened and identified the FAR1/FHY3 family genes in the ginseng transcriptome databases. And then, we analyzed their gene structure and phylogeny, chromosomal localization and expression patterns, and promoter cis-acting elements, and made GO functional annotations on the members of this family. After that, we treated the ginseng adventitious roots with 200 mM methyl jasmonate and investigated the trend of the expression of four genes containing the largest number of methyl jasmonate cis-acting elements at different treatment times. All four genes were able to respond to methyl jasmonate, the most significant change was in the PgFAR40 gene. This study provides data support for subsequent studies of this family member in ginseng and provides experimental reference for subsequent validation of the function of this family member under methyl jasmonic acid signaling.

Abstract:As an important medicine homologous food, Chinese jujube is rich in nutrition and medicinal value. To enhance the bioactive compounds level of Chinese jujube products, three kinds of fungi strains (Rhizopus oryzae, Aspergillus niger and Monascus purpureus) were firstly selected to evaluate their effects on total soluble phenolic compounds (TSPC) and total soluble flavonoids compounds (TSFC) contents during liquid state fermentation of Chinese jujube. As the best strain, the highest contents of TSPC and TSFC could increase by 102.1% (26.02 mg GAE/g DW) and 722.8% (18.76 mg RE/g DW) under M. purpureus fermentation when compared to the unfermented sample, respectively. Qualitative and quantitative analysis of individual polyphenol compounds indicated that proto-catechuic acid, p-hydroxybenzoic acid and chlorogenic acid showed the highest level in the fer-mented Chinese jujube at the 7th day, which was enhanced by 16.72-, 14.05- and 6.03-fold when compared to the control, respectively. Combining with RNA sequencing, function annotation of CAZymes database and polyphenol profiling, three potential transformation pathways of poly-phenol compounds were proposed in the fermented Chinese jujube by M. purpureus, such as the conversion of insoluble bound phenolic acids, rutin and anthocyanin degradation. These findings would be beneficial for better understanding of the biotransformation mechanism of polyphenol compounds in fungi fermentation.

Abstract:The biosynthesis and accumulation of secondary metabolites play a vital role in determining the quality of medicinal plants, with carbohydrate metabolism often influencing secondary metabolism. To understand the potential regulatory mechanism, exogenous sugars (sucrose, glucose/fructose) were applied to the leaves of Cyclocarya paliurus, a highly valued and multiple function tree species. The results showed that exogenous sugars enhanced the accumulation of soluble sugar and starch while increasing the enzyme activity related to carbohydrate metabolism. In addition, the plant height was increased by a mixture of exogenous mixed sugars, the addition of sucrose promoted the net photosynthetic rate, while all types of exogenous sugars facilitated the accumulation of flavonoids and terpenoids. Based on weighted gene co‐expression network analysis (WGCNA), two key gene modules and four candidate transcription factors (TFs) related to carbohydrate metabolism and secondary metabolite biosynthesis were identified. A correlation analysis between transcriptome and metabolome data showed that exogenous sugar up‐regulated the expression of key structural genes in the flavonoid and terpenoid biosynthetic pathway. The expression levels of the four candidate TFs, TIFY 10A, WRKY 7, EIL 3 and RF2a, were induced by exogenous sugar and were strongly correlated with the key structural genes, which enhanced the synthesis of specific secondary metabolites and some plant hormone signal pathways. Our results provide a comprehensive understanding of key factors in the quality formation of medicinal plants and a potential approach to improve the quality.

Abstract:Background: Foreign body aspiration claims thousands of lives each year.1It is the fourth leading accidental cause of death under three years of age and the third cause of death under one year of age. The aim of the study was to evaluate the presentation and management of different types of foreign bodies in tracheobronchial tree in children. Methods:This descriptive study carried out in the ENT department of Holy Family Hospital Rawalpindi, from January 2011 to June 2013. Children from emergency /OPD of ENT or pediatric unit with suspicion of foreign body aspiration were included in the study. Relevant history and demographic details were recorded. The findings of chest x-ray were also documented. All patients underwent rigid bronchoscopy under general anesthesia. Bronchoscopic findings with type and location of retrieved foreign body were noted down. Results: A total of 168 cases went under bronchoscopy for the removal of foreign body. 69% were male. Mean age was 2.9 years. Cases which presented directly (direct cases) to us were 131(78%) and rest were referred from pediatric unit (referred cases). Total chest X-ray performed were 105(62.5%) though visible foreign body was present in only 16.19% cases. Paroxysm of cough was the main symptom (51.7%) and decreased breath sound was the main sign on presentation (88.6%). Foreign body was recovered in 94% of direct cases and 75.6% in referred cases. Ground nuts were the most common foreign body (71.52%) and the right bronchus was the most common location of foreign body lodgment (58.27%). Conclusion: Rigid bronchoscopy is an effective procedure for the removal of foreign bodies in tracheobronchial tree in children.
