Abstract:Regenerated cellulose/ionic liquids (ILs)-reduced graphene oxide (IRGO) nanocomposites have been prepared via a simple and green method based on 1-allyl-3-methylimidazoliun chloride (AmimCl). To one's surprise, it is found that the presence of a small amount of IRGO sheets can largely decelerate the dissolution of cellulose in AmimCl, and thus the thermal and mechanical properties of resultant cellulose/IRGO nanocomposites could be controlled simply by changing the dissolution time. Our results suggest that the residual cellulose fibrils with micrometre size are beneficial to the thermal stabilities of regenerated cellulose/IRGO films when short dissolution time is used. However, for obtaining cellulose/IRGO nanocomposites with improved mechanical properties, full dissolution and mixture of cellulose in IRGO/AmimCl solution with prolonged time are required. Compared with the regenerated pure cellulose film, our cellulose/IRGO nanocomposite prepared with dissolution time of 4 h exhibits about 23 degrees C increase in decomposition temperature, and 10.7% increase in tensile strength and remarkably 387.5% increase in strain at break, respectively.

Abstract:Regenerated cellulose fiber (RCF) is an environmentally friendly material with outstanding mechanical properties and recyclability, which has been used in a large number of applications. However, during the spinning process using ionic liquids (ILs) as solvents, the dissolved cellulose continues to degrade and even produces degradation products such as glucose, which can enter the recycled solvent and coagulation bath. The presence of glucose can seriously affect the performance of the produced RCFs and hinder their applications, so it has become critical to clarify the regulation and mechanism of this process. In this study, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethyl phosphate ([Emim]DEP) with different glucose contents was selected to dissolve wood pulp cellulose (WPC) and obtained RCFs in different coagulation baths. The effect of glucose content in spinning solution on fiber spinnability was investigated by rheological analysis, and the influence of coagulation bath composition and glucose content on the morphological characteristics and mechanical properties of the RCFs was also studied in depth. The results indicated that the morphology, crystallinity, and orientation factor of RCFs were influenced by the presence of glucose in the spinning solution or coagulation bath, resulting in corresponding changes in mechanical properties, which can provide practical reference and guidance for the industrial production of new type fiber.

Abstract:Fabricating regenerated cellulose fibers using ionic liquids is a novel and green technology. Structural changes of regenerated fibers during forming process affect the macroscopic properties of regenerated fibers. The study of the regenerated fiber forming mechanisms in conditions relevant to fiber spinning processes, especially in the process of dry-wet spinning, is necessary and meaningful. In this work, regenerated cellulose fibers were prepared from wood pulp meal with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethylphosphate ([Emim]DEP) under various coagulation bath compositions. The effect of coagulating conditions on the properties of regenerated fibers was investigated, and the internal structures and mechanical properties of regenerated fibers were characterized. The results indicated that regenerated cellulose fibers eventually developed differences in their internal structure and mechanical properties due to the different diffusion rates between spinning solution and coagulation bath. Ethanol significantly reduced the crystallinity and orientation, and elongation increased greatly. In addition, both the crystallinity and orientation of regenerated fibers increased with the decreased of ethanol content in coagulation bath when ethanol content >70 %, while the elongation was reversed. What's more, the scanning electron microscopy results revealed that the regenerated cellulose fibers' surfaces were homogeneous, indicating the regenerated fibers have great potential in the application of textile fabrics.

Abstract:Utilizing phosphate-based ionic liquids (ILs) solvents for dissolving cellulose to prepare cellulose fibers has attracted much attention for its convenience, high yield, stability and sustainability. However, the degradation behavior during dissolving of cellulose in ILs, which is an important factor for fabricating cellulose fiber, is still unclear. In this work, the degradation of wood pulped cellulose (WPC) in three kinds of phosphate-based ILs: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium diethyl phosphate ([Emim]DEP), 1-butyl-3-ethylimidazolium diethyl phosphate ([Beim]DEP) and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dimethyl phosphate ([Emim]DMP), were systematically investigated at different dissolution temperatures and dissolution times. The results indicated that the degradation degree of WPC in three ILs follows the order of [Emim]DEP > [Beim]DEP > [Emim]DMP, which is consistent with interaction results obtained by quantum chemical calculation, and degradation degree increases follows the rising of dissolution temperature and the accumulation of dissolution time. Moreover, no reducing sugar (RS) was found in any recycled ILs even when the degree of polymerization (DP) of regenerated cellulose (RC) decreased by 30.4%. In addition, according to the Fourier transform infrared and X-ray diffraction data, the results further proved that the crystallization type of RC changed from type Ⅰ to type Ⅱ. Here, preferable dissolving parameters and experiments data of multiple conditions are provided, which may provide practical reference and guidance for both scientific research and industrial.

Abstract:Microfluidic spinning technology provides a powerful platform for the preparation of functional regenerated cellulose fibers (RCFs) with geometric diversities, which have promising applications in numerous fields. Ionic liquid (IL) is considered to be an optimized solvent for the preparation of RCFs due to its excellent cellulose solubility, but its high viscosity leads to some challenges in the preparation of RCFs using microfluidic spinning. Herein, it is indicated that adding DMSO into IL/cellulose spinning dope is a facile and effective strategy to realize stable microfluidic spinning, and this strategy would not sacrifice the spinning efficiency or the mechanical properties of RCFs. In addition, the steady and oscillatory shear data proved that DMSO reduced the viscosity by hundreds of times by weakening the frictional resistance of the molecules and reducing the aggregations in solution, without affecting on the state of the cellulose entanglement network. Furthermore, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation results indicated that the pressure in the channel was greatly decreased due to the reduction in the viscosity of the spinning dope, but the laminar flow in the microchannel would not be changed. The RCFs were prepared using 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Emim]Ac)/DMSO with the mass ratio of 3:2−1:3 as the solvents. Characterization results showed that all of the fabricated RCFs were dense and glossy, and the crystallinity of RCFs was decreased with the increase of the DMSO content in the solvent, while the DP and thermal stability were not affected. Moreover, the RCFs exhibited a superior tensile strength of 197.38−218.14 MPa and an elongation of 8.60–9.67%.

Besides, the regenerated cellulose can be used for textiles, degradable membranes, hydrogels/aerogels, etc. But the regenerated mechanism of cellulose remains ambiguous. In this work, a Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculation is reported for the cellulose regeneration from a cellulose/1-n-butyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (BmimOAc)/water mixture. To investigate the microcosmic effects of the anti-solvents, we analyzed the structures and H-bonds of BmimOAc-nH2O and cellobiose-ILs-nH2O (n = 0–6) clusters. It can be found that when n ≥ 5 in the BmimOAc-nH2O clusters, the solvent-separated ion pairs (SIPs) play a dominant position in the system. With the increasing numbers of water molecules, the cation-anion interaction can be separated by water to reduce the effects of ILs on cellulose dissolution. Furthermore, the BmimOAc-nH2O and cellobiose-ILs (n = 0–6) clusters tend to be a more stable structure with high hydration in an aqueous solution. When the water molecules were added to the system, H-bonds can be formed among H2O, the hydroxyl of cellulose, and the oxygen of OAc. Therefore, the interactions between cellobiose and ILs will be decreased to promote cellulose regeneration. This work would provide some help to understand the mechanism of the cellulose regeneration from the view of theoretical calculation.

Abstract:Heavy metal contamination is widely present in the spinning field. Some heavy metal ions such as Fe 3+ may accumulate in the coagulation bath using ionic liquids (ILs) as green solvents to prepare regenerated cellulose fibers (RCFs), which seriously affect the performance of RCFs and the subsequent regeneration of ILs. This study proposed a new strategy to selectively adsorb Fe 3+ from ILs aqueous solution using carboxyl-functionalized wood microchannel (CW). The CW was optimized by citric acid concentration and reaction time using carboxyl group contents as an indicator. The physic-chemical properties of CW were characterized, and its adsorption performance for Fe 3+ was also evaluated in a water system. Furthermore, the adsorption selectivity of CW for Fe 3+ and ILs was investigated. The results demonstrate that the CW had a high adsorption ratio for Fe 3+ (94.73%), while that for ILs was 4.20%. The selective adsorption mechanism, in which the Fe 3+ is mainly separated from ILs aqueous solution by complexation with carboxyl group, was confirmed by FTIR, XPS, MIP, and DFT calculation. Accordingly, this paper may provide a new strategy to selectively adsorb Fe 3+ from ILs aqueous solution, thus offering an economical and efficient method for ILs recovery and water purification.

Abstract:Swelling and dissolution of cellulose in ionic liquids (ILs) as the pretreatment processes are key steps for the high-value conversion and utilization of cellulose. However, the molar ratio of H 2 O to ILs has a significant effect on the swelling and dissolution of cellulose, and its molecular-scale mechanism is still unclear, which limits screening out the suitable ILs and recovery of ILs from coagulation bath in the spinning process. Herein, three phosphate-based ILs were chosen to couple with water as solvents for swelling and dissolution of cellulose by combining in-situ observation and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The results show that the redissolution time of swollen cellulose is greatly reduced, especially [Emim]DEP-H 2 O has the best swelling and dissolution performance for cellulose due to its high β value and low viscosity. Meanwhile, when the molar ratio of IL to H 2 O was more than 1: -1, the IL-H 2 O system still has the ability to dissolve cellulose. While with the molar ratio further decreased, cellulose was no longer dissolved and began to swell, and the fiber diameter obtained the maximum swelling rate with 40.1% at a molar ratio of 1:3. Moreover, MD simulation was used to calculate the interaction between IL/water/cellulose, which further illustrated that the combination of IL with water molecular has a significant influence on the behavior of cellulose in IL-H 2 O systems at the molecular scale. Thus, the potential swelling and dissolution mechanism of cellulose in ILs-H 2 O binary systems was proposed based on experimental and simulation results. Furthermore, the characterization results of swollen cellulose indicate that the crystal structure and degree of polymerization (DP) were almost unchanged, but the specific surface area and pore size increased significantly, and the thermal stability and heat absorption were decreased, all the results prove that the swelling process increased the accessibility of cellulose and benefited to the subsequent dissolution. Consequently, preferable swelling and dissolving parameters of experiments and simulations will provide a new idea for the selection of suitable ILs and the recovery of ILs from a coagulation bath in the dry-wet spinning process.

Effect of degree of polymerization on regenerated cellulose ultrafiltration membrane performance through ZnCl2/AlCl3 aqueous solvent system

Abstract:The development of a direct method for preparing regenerated cellulose (RC) ultrafiltration membranes from cellulose is urgently needed. In this study, refined cotton was used as the raw material to successfully prepare RC ultrafiltration membranes at room temperature using a ZnCl2/AlCl3 solvent system combined with a nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) method. This solvent system effectively degrades cellulose, producing RC ultrafiltration membranes with varying degrees of polymerization (DP). The research results indicate that reducing the DP of cellulose significantly decreases the viscosity of the solution, facilitating the formation of an asymmetric, finger-like pore structures in the membrane. Furthermore, a decrease in DP slightly enlarges the surface pore size and significantly thickens the dense layer. At a DP of 250, the water flux of the DP250-ET membrane reached 630 L·m-2·h-1·bar-1, with a molecular weight cut-off (MWCO) of ~300 kDa, enabling efficient separation of viruses (LRV > 3.91) and IgG. The exposure of more hydroxy groups on the RC enhances the membrane's hydrophilicity, indicated by a water contact angle (WCA) of 39.5°. Compared to commercial polyethersulfone (PES) membranes, the DP250-ET membrane exhibited lower protein adsorption and excellent anti-fouling performance in practical applications (FRR > 80 %). Overall, this work confirms the significant potential of the eco-friendly ZnCl2/AlCl3 solvent system in the fabrication of RC ultrafiltration membranes, where the structure and performance of the membrane can be tailored by adjusting the DP of cellulose.

Abstract:Cellulose films regenerated from aqueous alkali–urea solution possess different properties depending on coagulation conditions. However, the correlation between coagulant species and properties of regenerated cellulose (RC) films has not been clarified yet. In this study, RC films were prepared from cellulose nanofiber (CNF) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) under several coagulation conditions. Cellulose dissolved in aqueous LiOH–urea solution was regenerated using various solvents at ambient temperature to investigate the effects of their dielectric constant on the properties of RC film. The crystal structure, mechanical properties, and surface morphology of prepared RC films were analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), tensile tester, and atomic probe microscopy (AFM), respectively. It is revealed that the preferential orientation of (110) and (020) crystal planes, which are formed by inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bonding in cellulose crystal regions, changed depending on coagulant species. Furthermore, we found out that tensile strength, elongation at break, and crystal structure properties of RC films strongly correlate to the dielectric constant of solvents used for the coagulation process. This work, therefore, would be able to provide an indicator to control the mechanical performance of RC film depending on its application and to develop detailed researches on controlling the crystal structure of cellulose.

Abstract:Superbase-based ionic liquids (ILs) have demonstrated excellent dissolution capability for cellulose, and employing the dry-jet wet spinning process, high-tenacity regenerated textile fibers have been made. Among a range of superbase-based ILs, [mTBDH][OAc] exhibited not only good spinnability but also exceptional recyclability, making it highly suitable for a closed-loop production of regenerated cellulose fibers. To further optimize the spinning process, we investigated the influence of the cellulosic raw materials and the IL with residual water on spinnability and fiber properties. In addition, single-filament spinning and multifilament spinning using spinnerets with different hole densities were investigated to reveal the upscaling challenges of the dry-jet wet spinning process. The air gap conditions, for example, temperature and moisture concentration were simulated using COMSOL multiphysics. The results indicate that the presence of a small amount of water (3 wt%) in the IL has a positive effect on spinnability, while the mechanical properties of the fibers remain unchanged.

Abstract:With over 20 years of continued development of ionic liquids (ILs) for natural polymer processing and conversion, the design and facile preparation of ILs is still a hot research topic. In this study, a hydrogen bonding acceptor strengthening strategy was applied to design ether functionalized protic ILs, which were synthesized by a solvent-free neutralization reaction of methoxyacetic acid (Mea) and 1,5-diazabicyclo [4.3.0]-5-nonene (DBN). The ether-functionalized protic ILs ([DBNH][Mea]) were identified as a satisfactory solvent for the simultaneous dissolution of silk fibroin (SF) and cellulose at mild conditions, thus delivering a new dissolution processing platform toward value-added SF-based regenerated fiber materials. The strengthened simultaneous dissolution mechanism of SF and cellulose in [DBNH][Mea] by the introduction of an ether structure moiety in the anion was experimentally and computationally verified, and the results indicated that the ether structure moiety endowed it with more hydrogen-bonding acceptor sites, thus presenting stronger hydrogen-bonding disruption ability and outstanding solubility to SF and cellulose under mild conditions. Rheological study of the SF/cellulose/[DBNH][Mea]/DMSO solutions was conducted systematically, and the correlations between apparent viscosity (η), activation energy (Εη), overlap concentration (c*), structural viscosity index (Δη), storage modulus (G′) and loss modulus (G′′) of the solutions were highly correlated to the mass ratio of SF to cellulose. A series of SF/cellulose composite fibers were prepared by wet spinning using ethanol as the coagulation bath, and the obtained composite fibers were analyzed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), elemental analysis, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and mechanical tests. It was found that the composite fibers had high compatibility and the postdrafting technique is beneficial for enhancing the mechanical robustness.

Regeneration of cellulose dissolved in ionic liquid using laser-heated melt-electrospinning

Abstract:A "green" and highly efficient route was proposed to fabricate ultrafine cellulose fibers. The processing steps include cellulose dissolution, gel preparation, melt-electrospinning and fiber coagulation. High DP cellulose can be easily dissolved in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BmimCl) when the blend was stirred at 110 °C for 2 h. The maximum solubility can reach up to 16.7 wt%. A homogeneous ternary cellulose/BmimCl/ethanol or cellulose/BmimCl/water gel was made by the methods of crystallization and casting for the purpose of fixing the shape of the cellulose/BmimCl solution. After laser-heating and electrospinning, multiple jets were ejected from the gel tip and then frozen on a super cold target. Pure cellulose fibers without beads and blocks were achieved after coagulation. The results of WAXD and FTIR indicated that the regenerated cellulose fibers were amorphous and chemically stable. More importantly, this approach can be applied to other polysaccharides for the preparation of ultrafine fibers.
Crystallinity of Regenerated Cellulose from [bmim] Cl Dependent on the Hydrogen Bond Acidity/basicity of Anti-Solvents

Abstract:Cellulose, regarded as a potential sustainable resource for the future, can dissolve and regenerate in ionic liquids (ILs) upon adding anti-solvents. Improving the regeneration conditions, like changing the anti-solvents, could optimize the properties of regenerated cellulose-based materials. Previous studies pointed out that the diffusion processes of anti-solvents plays a significant role in the determination of the properties of regenerated cellulose fibers/films. However, the cellulose regeneration mechanism from ILs has not been clarified. Here, attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy was introduced to monitor the molecular diffusion processes of four anti-solvents in situ. The crystallinity of regenerated cellulose showed a negative correlation with respect to the diffusion coefficient. In addition, the interaction of imidazolium cations and anti-solvent molecules was evaluated from the peak shifting during the diffusion processes. Furthermore, Taft and Kamlet scales were used to quantify the interaction between IL cations/anions and anti-solvent molecules, eliciting distinct cellulose regeneration paths in different anti-solvents.

Abstract:Regenerated cellulose fibers (RCFs) help to overcome the limitations of synthetic fibers and retain the advantages of natural fibers. This paper describes the traditional and new cellulose solvents, along with their dissolution mechanisms and development of fiber‐spinning. Some effective strategies and methods for improving the mechanical strength of RCFs and promoting the implementation of industrial production are summarized. Cellulose is the most abundant and "green" biomass resource on earth and gains tremendous attention. It is expected to become an alternative for traditional chemical and petroleum resources. This review describes the traditional solvents used for industrial processes, the non‐derivative organic solvents, and the aqueous solution systems, along with their dissolution mechanisms and development of fiber‐spinning processes. The problems associated with the industrial production of viscose fibers and cuprammonium fibers are also discussed. This paper focuses on the research status of regenerated cellulose fibers (RCFs) prepared with green and no‐pollution aqueous solutions and provides some effective strategies and methods for improving the mechanical strength of RCFs and promoting the implementation of industrial production. Lastly, the current developments of RCFs are summarized and prospected and it would serve as a guide for the developmental trend and research direction of RCFs in the future.

Abstract:The high viscosity of ionic liquids, even at relatively high temperatures, can greatly affect the production of cellulose fibers through the wet-spinning process. The high viscosity mainly by due to the hydrogen bond interaction between the cations and anions of ionic liquids. It is possible to reduce the viscosity by modulating the hydrogen bond interaction. In the present work, copper chloride (CuCl2) was dissolved in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([Bmim]Cl)-cellulose solution, followed by the formation of a complex with the chloride anions by converting it to [CuCl4](2-) anion. Through this strategy, the extrusion velocity of the solution improved, and the produced fibers obtained smoother surfaces and shrunken diameters.

Abstract:Regenerated cellulose fibers (RCFs) are widely used biodegradable and eco-friendly materials made from woody biomass that can replace synthetic fibers. In this work, we explored the feasibility of fabricating RCFs using phosphoric acid with hydrogen peroxide (PHP)-treated wheat straw in an N, N -dimethylacetamide/lithium chloride (DMAc/LiCl) solvent system. The effects of upstream pretreatment conditions on the obtained cellulose-enriched fraction (CEF), the solubility of CEF in DMAc/LiCl, the mechanical properties of RCFs, and the interfacial interaction of residual lignin were systematically studied. CEF could be completely dissolved in DMAc/LiCl, and its wet spun RCFs had tensile strengths of 184 MPa and toughness values of 25 MJ/m 3 ; it demonstrated remarkable wet strength (84 MPa), wet toughness (11 MJ/m 3 ), and dyeing properties. The existence of residual lignin negatively affected the RCF mechanical properties; however, it enhanced its resistance to water infiltration. The present work provided a new approach for producing RCFs from woody biomass.

Abstract:Owing to their unique physicochemical features, ionic liquids (ILs) are extensively utilized to dissolve cellulose for the preparation of regenerated cellulose fibers (RCFs) in the textile industry. However, Cu 2+ is introduced during the cellulose dissolution process and gradually accumulates, seriously affecting the RCF performance and IL recovery. Herein, to achieve an efficient and selective adsorption of Cu 2+ from ILs aqueous solutions, a facile and green method based on the in situ growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework-67 in wood hydrogels (ZIF-67@WH) is presented. The morphology, functional groups, crystallinity, thermal stability, and pore structure of the resulting ZIF-67@WH were investigated using various characterization techniques, and the adsorption selectivity, adsorption thermodynamics, adsorption kinetics, and recoverability were examined in depth by performing batch experiments. The ZIF-67@WH exhibits high adsorption selectivity for Cu 2+ and ILs with adsorption ratios of 92.8 % and 2.2 %, respectively. The selective adsorption mechanism was elucidated by means of FT-IR, XPS, DFT, and MD. As the key for the selective adsorption, the N site in ZIF-67 dramatically promotes the coordination with Cu 2+ , while the adsorption for ILs mainly occurs via hydrogen bonding and van der Waals interactions with adsorption energies of –80.61 and –35.33 kcal mol −1 , respectively. The results demonstrate that this approach constitutes a feasible technique for the efficient separation of Cu 2+ and ILs in the textile industry.

Abstract:A facile cellulose solvent 1,3-diallyl-2-ethylimidazolium acetate ([AAeim][OAc]) with high electrical conductivity has been designed and synthesized for the first time, via a quaternization reaction and ion exchange method. The dissolution characteristics of cellulose in this solvent were studied in detail. Meanwhile, the co-solvent system was designed by adding an aprotic polar solvent dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in [AAeim][OAc]. The effects of temperature and the mass ratio of DMSO to [AAeim][OAc] on the solubility of cellulose were studied. Furthermore, the effects of regeneration on the molecular structure and thermal stability of cellulose were determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermal gravity analysis (TGA) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The findings revealed that the synthesized ionic liquid (IL) has a relatively low viscosity, high conductivity and a good dissolving capacity for bamboo dissolving pulp cellulose (Degree of Polymerization: DP = 650). The macromolecular chain of the cellulose is less damaged during the dissolution and regeneration process. Due to the increased number of "free" anions [OAc]- and cations [AAeim]⁺, the addition of DMSO can significantly increase the solubility of the cellulose up to 12 wt % at the mass ratio of 3:1, indicating that the synthesized IL has a potential application in the electrospinning field.
