Abstract:This study aimed to describe the status quo of human papilloma virus (HPV)-related knowledge and attitude among Chinese male college students and explore the factors influencing HPV vaccination intention. A national, cross-sectional online survey was conducted among male college students in China to investigate their HPV-related information, knowledge, attitudes, and vaccine recommendation intentions. Path analysis based on the information, knowledge, attitude, and intention model was used to assess the relationships between predictors. In total, 823 male college students participated in the survey. More than 80% of the respondents believed that the HPV vaccine was necessary for their female partners, whereas 136 (16.52%) respondents knew nothing about HPV or HPV vaccines. Information exposure was a positive predictor of HPV-related knowledge. Knowledge subsequently had a positive impact on trust in HPV vaccines, and sufficient knowledge and a positive attitude increased the intention to recommend HPV vaccination (p < .001). Among the demographic characteristics, age and a major in medicine were positively associated with the information score (p < .05). The male college students' HPV-related knowledge was inadequate and negatively influenced their vaccine recommendation intentions. If we take advantage of the Internet and individual sources to increase students' exposure to information, we will improve their HPV-related knowledge and attitudes; thus, the intention to recommend HPV vaccination will ultimately be stronger.

Abstract:The acceptability of HPV vaccination among university students in China is not well understood. Our study was of cross-sectional study design. We collected a questionnaire about socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge of, attitude toward and acceptability of HPV vaccination. A total of 351 students were included in data analyses, among whom 47.6% were males and 70.0% aged 19-21. Only 10.3% had previously heard of HPV and 5.4% HPV vaccine. Male and female students were equally likely to accept HPV vaccine (71.8 vs 69.4%, p = 0.634) and recommend it to sexual partners (73.1 vs 76.7%, p = 0.441). The great majority of students could only afford RMB 300 (USD 50) or less for HPV vaccination. HPV vaccination acceptance was associated with being in year-one (Adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 3.78, 95% confidence interval (CI): 2.12-6.75), being from a key university (AOR = 1.88, 95% CI: 1.07-3.31), having heard of HPV-related morbidities (AOR = 1.88, 95% CI: 1.05-3.35), being concerned about HPV-related morbidities (AOR = 2.23, 95% CI: 1.16-4.27) and believing the vaccine should be given before first sexual contact (AOR = 2.44, 95% CI: 1.384.29). Female students were more likely to anticipate a late uptake of HPV vaccination (p = 0.002). The relatively lower levels of HPV knowledge but higher levels of vaccine acceptance among undergraduates highlighted the need for education on the roles of sexual behaviors in HPV transmission.

Abstract:Introduction: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine has proven to play a major role in preventing sexually transmitted diseases and related cancers among both men and women. However, the coverage of the HPV vaccination is still limited. Objective: The study aims to evaluate the awareness of HPV and HPV vaccine, as well as the willingness to take HPV vaccine, especially factors influencing vaccination willingness among male college students. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional investigation among male college students from six colleges in Jiangsu, China. A structured questionnaire was used to investigate the subjects' basic information, behavior habits, cognition of the HPV vaccine, and intention for HPV vaccination. Multivariate analysis modes were used to analyze the influencing factors of vaccine awareness and willingness. Results: We found that among 912 participants, only 24.34% of the participants had a "good knowledge" of HPV and HPV vaccine, and 34.54% showed a "positive attitude" toward the HPV vaccine after obtaining knowledge of HPV and its vaccine. Factors such as immune persistence, side effects, pricing strategy, and participants' self-assessment of HPV infection were the main factors influencing the HPV vaccination. Conclusion: Strengthening health education on the HPV vaccination and finding appropriate ways to solve the problem of "vaccine hesitancy" will be effective in improving the coverage of the HPV vaccine and preventing related diseases. In addition, the lifting of restrictions on HPV vaccination for men in China may also prove useful.

Willingness to Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccination and Influencing Factors among Male and Female University Students in China

Abstract:This study compared the willingness to receive human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination and the influencing factors between male and female university students who had never been vaccinated against HPV in China. University students were recruited from seven universities in China. A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect information about demographic characteristics, willingness to HPV vaccination, and possible influencing factors including demographics, knowledge, and attitude toward HPV vaccination. The chi(2) test was used to test the difference between males and females' knowledge and attitudes to HPV vaccination. Multivariate logistic regression was employed to detect the factors associated with willingness to HPV vaccination. A total of 7335 university students participated in the survey (3570 males and 3765 females). Over 70% of the participants had previously received sex education and knowledge. The average age of sexual debut was 17.5 years old. More male students reported acceptance of premarital sex than female students did (chi(2) = 708.458, p < 0.001). Female students had better knowledge and attitudes to HPV in general, while male students perceived a higher chance of being infected by HPV compared with female students (chi(2) = 6.047, p = 0.014). The level of knowledge (male: adjusted odds ratio [AOR] = 1.935, 95% confidence interval [CI]:1.516-2.470; female: AOR = 1.227, 95% CI: 1.055-1.428) and receiving sex education (male: AOR = 1.414, 95% CI: 1.109-1.804; female: AOR = 1.289, 95% CI: 1.064-1.562) were indicators of the HPV vaccination willingness for both genders. For male students, those who had ever inoculated optional self-paid vaccines were more likely to receive the HPV vaccine than those who had not (AOR = 1.567, 95% CI: 1.242-1.977). Female students were more willing to be vaccinated against HPV, if they had higher living expenses (AOR = 1.395 and 3.717, 95% CI: 1.071-1.426 and 1.776-7.752), relatives or friends had certain cancer (AOR = 1.290, 95% CI: 1.095-1.518), ever had sexual experiences (AOR = 2.628, 95% CI: 1.788-3.863), and had ever consulted on HPV vaccination issues (AOR = 1.612, 95% CI: 1.367-1.901). In China, more active education should be provided to improve university students' knowledge and attitudes on HPV and HPV vaccination. Including HPV vaccine uptake for both males and females at recommended ages in National Immunization Program would be the most cost-effective way to prevent HPV infection.

Abstract:Objective: This study aimed to determine human papillomavirus (HPV)-related awareness and willingness to receive HPV vaccination among college students, in Wenzhou, and its associated factors. Methods: A cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted among college students in Wenzhou to investigate their knowledge, attitude, and factors affecting their willingness to receive HPV vaccination. Results: A total of 1035 questionnaires were collected, of which 1002 were valid (males: 374, females: 628). In total, 904 (90.2%) college students had heard of HPV, with a lower rate among males than females (85.3% vs. 93.2%, p < 0.05) and 693 (69.2%) had heard of the HPV vaccine, with a significantly lower rate among males than females (53.7% vs. 78.3%, p < 0.05). Overall awareness of HPV and HPV vaccine among males and females was moderate, with lower awareness among males. A total of 55.9% of males and 80.4% of females indicated that they would be willing to receive the HPV vaccine, a significant difference (p < 0.001). The price, safety of HPV vaccine, and lack of knowledge about HPV and HPV vaccine were the major barriers to HPV vaccination for college students. Compared to females, inadequate knowledge of HPV was the main barrier factor for HPV vaccination among male college students. Conclusions: The overall knowledge level of males is lower than that of females. For male college students, providing more knowledge about HPV infection is helpful to promote their willingness to vaccinate. It is necessary to promote HPV-related knowledge for male and female college students, respectively.

Abstract:Abstract Background Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women. Up to 99% of cervical cancer cases are associated with high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV). Sexual behavior is a direct risk factor for HPV infection, and sexually active college students, therefore, receive attention for HPV vaccination. At present, most Chinese studies lack of in-depth research on influencing factors, and are limited to cervical cancer, HPV, or HPV vaccine, without comprehensive consideration. This study investigated Chinese college students’ cervical cancer prevention and treatment knowledge level, and explored the influencing factors, and understood their willingness to receive HPV vaccination. The findings of this study will lay a foundation for promoting the early screening of cervical cancer and vaccination process. Methods A total of 800 college students from four universities in Zhengzhou, China were selected by multistage random sampling method. A self-administered questionnaire on the knowledge of cervical cancer prevention and treatment, and willingness to receive HPV vaccination was carried out. A logistic regression model was conducted to analyze factors influencing knowledge of cervical cancer prevention and treatment among college students. Results Up to 87.9% of college students said they had heard of cervical cancer. The proportion of college students with good knowledge of cervical cancer prevention and treatment was 46.7%. Logistic regression showed that gender, major, grade, level of education, the father's level of education, premarital sex attitude, and mother cervical cancer screening participation had a significant influence on cervical cancer prevention and treatment knowledge level ( P < 0.05). In addition, 589 (74.0%) of college students had heard of HPV vaccine, and 92.8% of college students said they were willing to get vaccinated or recommended that their relatives and friends get vaccinated. Conclusions The knowledge level of cervical cancer prevention and treatment knowledge among college students in Zhengzhou is low. Many of them had poor knowledge about HPV vaccine, but their willingness to vaccination is high. Various health education modes should be carried out for people with different characteristics, to improve their knowledge of cervical cancer prevention and promote the vaccination process.

Abstract:This study assessed the knowledge of 12- to 15-year-old male junior high school students of HPV and HPV vaccines and their willingness to be vaccinated against it. From March to May 2023, students from six junior high schools in Zhejiang Province were randomly selected to complete an online, anonymous, self-administered questionnaire. Of the 1786 students, 618 (34.6%) reported knowledge of HPV vaccine. In general, junior high school boys have low general knowledge about HPV, the consequences of HPV infection, and the effects of HPV vaccination. Multivariate analysis showed that the subgroup scoring 6–7 on the measure of the consequences of HPV infection(7 questions with 1 score for each correct answer) compared to the subgroup scoring 0, the subgroups scoring 2 and 3 on the measure of the preventive effect of HPV vaccine(3 questions with 1 score for each correct answer) compared to the subgroup scoring 0 were were more likely to be willing to be vaccinated against HPV. Hearing that someone close to them had cancer, believing that men also need to be vaccinated against HPV, knowing that someone close to them had been vaccinated against HPV, and being concerned about cervical cancer in their female sexual partners were all more likely to generate positive responses. HPV vaccine education for this group of students should emphasize the possibility and consequences of HPV infection in males, along with the importance and benefits of HPV vaccination; actual cases of vaccination in students around them can be used to achieve this goal.

Abstract:Gene transfer for beta-thalassemia requires gene transfer into hematopoietic stem cells using integrating vectors that direct regulated expression of beta globin at therapeutic levels. Among integrating vectors, oncoretroviral vectors carrying the human beta-globin gene and portions of the locus control region (LCR) have suffered from problems of vector instability, low titers and variable expression. In recent studies, human immunodeficiency virus-based lentiviral (LV) vectors were shown to stably transmit the human beta-globin gene and a large LCR element, resulting in correction of beta-thalassemia intermedia in mice. Several groups have since demonstrated correction of the mouse thalassemia intermedia phenotype, with variable levels of beta-globin expression. These levels of expression were insufficient to fully correct the anemia in thalassemia major mouse model. Insertion of a chicken hypersensitive site-4 chicken insulator element (cHS4) in self-inactivating (SIN) LV vectors resulted in higher and less variable expression of human beta-globin, similar to the observations with cHS4-containing retroviral vectors carrying the human gamma-globin gene. The levels of beta-globin expression achieved from insulated SIN-LV vectors were sufficient to phenotypically correct the thalassemia phenotype from 4 patients with human thalassemia major in vitro, and this correction persisted long term for up to 4 months, in xeno-transplanted mice in vivo. In summary, LV vectors have paved the way for clinical gene therapy trials for Cooley's anemia and other beta-globin disorders. SIN-LV vectors address several safety concerns of randomly integrating viral vectors by removing viral transcriptional elements and providing lineage-restricted expression. Flanking the proviral cassette with chromatin insulator elements, which additionally have enhancer-blocking properties, may further improve SIN-LV vector safety.

Abstract:We greatly appreciate Dr. Fisher's commentary that provides an excellent backdrop and well-considered perspective on our findings. We agree that our results mesh well with previous work documenting hypocortisolism among youth who experienced early adversity, especially neglect. Moreover, as also perceptively noted by Dr. Fisher, our cross-sectional data provide support for the notion that hypocortisolism is not simply a transient phenomenon, but, rather, a persistent pattern characterizing maltreated youth. Specifically, the consistency of the between group effect (from age 9.69 onwards) on a multimonth index of cumulative cortisol and the dose-dependent gradient of cortisol secretion within the maltreated group, which was related to the number of subtypes and the length of exposure to maltreatment, lend weight to this view.

Abstract:The compactness of the QCD gauge group leads to the existence of chromomagnetic monopole configurations. The interactions of these monopoles are studied using electric-magnetic duality as a guide. It is shown that the gluon-monopole interaction acquires an extra minus sign which tends to destabilize the monopole configurations. A model is presented which exploits this observation. We present a scenario where the monopoles condense, giving chromomagnetic superconductivity, via a first-order phase transition at a scale where the electric and magnetic charges are equal, i.e., ..cap alpha.. = 1/2. In this vacuum medium gluons propagate like 1/k/sup 4/ which is now seen to be the dual equivalent of the statement that the vacuum is a chromomagnetic superconductor.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To study the chemical constituents in root and rhizome of Aster tataricus. METHODS Compounds were isolated and purified by silica gel and sephadex LH-20 column chromatography. Their structures were identified by physicochemical properties and spectral analysis. RESULT Nine compounds were isolated and identified as quercetin (I), kaemferol (II), emodin (III), chrysophanol (IV), physcion (V), benzoic acid (VI), p-hydroxy-bezoic acid (VII), E-caffeic acid (VIII), E-ferulic acid hexacosyl ester (IX). CONCLUSION Compounds IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX were isolated from A. tataricus for the first time.
Human Papillomavirus (HPV) Vaccine Uptake and the Willingness to Receive the HPV Vaccination among Female College Students in China: A Multicenter Study

Abstract:Background: This study aimed to determine human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine uptake and willingness to receive HPV vaccination among female college students, in China, and its associated factors. Methods: An online cross-sectional survey of female college students across the eastern, central, and western regions of China was undertaken between April and September 2019. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to examine factors associated with the HPV vaccine uptake and willingness to receive the HPV vaccine. Results: Among the total 4220 students who participated in this study, 11.0% reported having been vaccinated against HPV. There are direct effects of indicators of higher socioeconomic status, older age (β = 0.084 and p = 0.006), and geographical region (residing in Eastern China, β = 0.033, and p = 0.024) on HPV vaccine uptake. Higher knowledge (β = 0.062 and p < 0.000) and perceived susceptibility (β = 0.043 and p = 0.002) were also predictors of HPV vaccine uptake. Of those who had not received the HPV vaccine, 53.5% expressed a willingness to do so. Likewise, social economic status indicators were associated with the willingness to receive the HPV vaccine. Total knowledge score (β = 0.138 and p < 0.001), both perceived susceptibility (β = 0.092 and p < 0.001) and perceived benefit (β = 0.088 and p < 0.001), and sexual experience (β = 0.041 and p = 0.007) had a positive and significant direct effect on the willingness to receive the HPV vaccine, while perceived barriers (β = −0.071 and p < 0.001) had a negative effect on the willingness to receive the HPV vaccine. Conclusions: Geographical region and socioeconomic disparities in the HPV vaccination uptake rate and willingness to receive the HPV vaccine provide valuable information for public health planning that aims to improve vaccination rates in underserved areas in China. The influence of knowledge and perceptions of HPV vaccination suggests the importance of communication for HPV immunization.

Abstract:We propose an optimal algorithm for the real-time scheduling of parallel tasks on multiprocessors, where the tasks have the properties of flexible preemption, linear speedup, bounded parallelism, and arbitrary deadline. The proposed algorithm is optimal in the sense that it always finds out a feasible schedule if one exists. Furthermore, the algorithm delivers the best schedule consuming the fewest processors among feasible schedules. In this letter, we prove the optimality of the proposed algorithm. Also, we show that the time complexity of the algorithm is O(M2 · N2) in the worst case, where M and N are the number of tasks and the number of processors, respectively.

Sexual behavior is a direct risk factor for HPV infection, and sexually active college students, therefore, receive attention for HPV vaccination. This study aimed to investigate the awareness of HPV and its vaccine among college students in Zhengzhou, and to explore the factors influencing their awareness of HPV vaccine, to understand college students' willingness to receive the vaccine. The findings of this study will lay a foundation for cervical cancer prevention. Methods: Using a multistage random sampling method, 650 college students from four universities in Zhengzhou were selected. A self-administered questionnaire on the awareness of HPV and its vaccine, and willingness to receive HPV vaccination was carried out. Logistic regression was used to analyze the factors influencing students' awareness of the HPV vaccine. Results: 58.0% of college students had heard of HPV, and 72.8% of college students had heard of HPV vaccine. Logistic regression showed that gender, major, grade, mean monthly consumption level, sexual history, and mother cervical cancer screening participation significantly influenced the awareness of HPV vaccine (p < 0.05). Only 27(4.2%) college students had received the HPV vaccine. 63.2% of college students expressed their willingness to get vaccinated. Conclusion: The awareness of HPV and its vaccine among college students in Zhengzhou needs improvement. Although the vaccination rate is low, most college students are willing to be vaccinated. Diverse health education programs should be conducted for different groups to improve awareness of cervical cancer prevention and promote vaccination.

Abstract:This cross-sectional epidemiological study aimed to investigate awareness regarding human papillomavirus (HPV) and willingness for vaccination among college students with or without medical background in Guizhou Province, China. A logistic regression model was used for univariate and multivariate analyses of cognition to determine factors influencing willingness for vaccination. In total, 2,540 questionnaires were collected, of which 2,360 were valid. The medical and nonmedical groups included 737 (31.2%) and 1,623 (68.8%) individuals, respectively. The medical group had heard of HPV and its vaccines more frequently than the nonmedical group, with the former also having greater awareness than the latter ( P < .001). Females (1,325, 56.1%) had heard of HPV and its vaccines more frequently than males (1,035, 43.9%), with the former also having greater awareness than the latter. The cost, safety, and efficacy of the HPV vaccine and lack of knowledge regarding HPV and its vaccines were the main barriers for vaccination. The overall level of knowledge regarding HPV and its vaccines was lower in the nonmedical group and males than in the medical group and females. To help promote willingness for vaccination among the nonmedical group and males, strategies that deepen their knowledge regarding the HPV vaccine are needed.

A cross-sectional web-based survey was conducted in June 2023 among female college students in four cities in Guangdong Province. The data were analyzed using binary logistic regression with a focus on the 3Cs model: Complacency, Convenience, and Confidence. LASSO regression was employed to analyze the variables deemed to be of significance and to construct predictive models. Out of 1399 participants, 86.5% expressed no hesitancy toward HPV vaccination. However, 11.9% exhibited hesitancy, and 1.6% refused vaccination altogether. Factors such as trust in vaccine efficacy, perception of HPV infection risk, price considerations, and constraints like distance or time were significant contributors to hesitancy. Knowledge of the HPV vaccine, socio-demographic characteristics, and the educational level of participants' mothers also played a role in vaccine hesitancy. It is recommended that targeted interventions be implemented within educational institutions with the aim of raising awareness of cervical cancer and HPV vaccines, simplifying the scheduling of vaccination appointments, and increasing affordability through the implementation of strategic purchasing measures or subsidy schemes.

Abstract:Background Adolescents are the primary target population for human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination. The objective of this study is to explore the acceptability of HPV vaccines and evaluate factors related to willingness to be vaccinated among Chinese adolescents. Methods A nation-wide survey was conducted across 14 schools in mainland China. The questionnaire consisted of questions relating to socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge of adolescent sexual health, cervical cancer, HPV and HPV-related disease, and students' willingness to be vaccinated. Chi-square tests and multivariable logistic regression were conducted in the data analysis. Results A total of 4,062 students participated in this study. Among them, only 17.1% of students reported having heard of HPV vaccines; however, 67.3% were willing to receive the HPV vaccine. Multivariable regression analysis showed that students who were from rural areas, have received sexual health education, have heard of cervical cancer or HPV vaccine, have a positive attitude toward vaccination, reported they were at the risk of developing cervical cancer, and those who value their parents' and teachers' opinions were more willing to receive HPV vaccination. Conclusions Awareness about the HPV vaccine is low among Chinese adolescents. The factors that most related to willingness to vaccinate among Chinese adolescents were school location, education about vaccination, HPV, and HPV vaccines. Integrating health education on HPV vaccination into existing school-based sexual health curricula may be an effective way to increase HPV vaccination coverage in mainland China.

Abstract:Despite the high effectiveness of HPV vaccines in preventing infection, vaccine hesitancy remains a concern, particularly in China. This study aimed to explore college students' attitudes toward HPV vaccination and identify associated factors. Data was collected through a cross-sectional survey using self-administered questionnaires in four cities from May to June 2022. Chi-square tests and logistic regression analyses were conducted to identify factors. Additionally, an integrated structural equation model (SEM) based on the 3Cs (confidence, convenience, complacency) was developed to understand underlying factors contributing to hesitancy. The results from 2261 valid questionnaires were enlightening. A significant 89.47% (59.4% for females) considered HPV vaccination necessary, with 9.82% remaining neutral and only 0.71% deeming it unnecessary. Factors like higher education, being a medical student, residing in urban areas, having medical insurance, more extraordinary living expenses, a family history of tumors, and a solid understanding of HPV played a role in perceiving the vaccine as necessary. Among the 1438 female respondents, 84.36% had no hesitancy toward HPV vaccination, 13.53% expressed hesitancy, and 2.11% refused vaccination. Factors like age, understanding of HPV, medical staff recommendations, living expenses, and family history influenced hesitancy levels. SEM revealed that the 3Cs significantly affected vaccine hesitancy. Factors like price, booking process, vaccination times, trust in vaccines, medical staff recommendations, efficiency, and risk perception collectively influenced hesitancy. In conclusion, this study found high acceptance of HPV vaccination but acknowledged the complexity of hesitancy factors. It recommends medical staff disseminate scientific knowledge, offer recommendations, simplify booking procedures, and expand vaccination sites to address vaccine hesitancy effectively.

Abstract:Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is the most common endocrine disorder of women of reproductive age. Although some of the primary symptoms of PCOS are reproductive abnormalities, including hyperandrogenism, menstrual dysfunction, and hirsutism, other metabolic disturbances are also common, including obesity and insulin resistance. Women with PCOS who have undergone weight-loss bariatric surgery have reported surprising postoperative benefits beyond weight loss, including resolution of menstrual dysfunction and improvement of hirsutism. Here, we use a chronic dihydrotestosterone (DHT) exposure model of PCOS in female rats and investigate the efficacy of a specific type of bariatric surgery, namely vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), to resolve the reproductive and metabolic disturbances induced by DHT treatment. We find that VSG causes loss of body weight and body fat in DHT-treated rats but does not improve glucose tolerance or restore estrous cyclicity. Although human PCOS patients have shown decreased androgen levels after bariatric surgery, the chronic nature of DHT administration in this rat model both before and after VSG renders this effect impossible in this case. Therefore, the lack of improvement in glucose tolerance and estrous cyclicity may implicate a direct effect of androgen knockdown as a mechanism for the improvements seen in human PCOS patients after bariatric surgery. In addition, the dissociation of body weight loss without improved glucose tolerance suggests that glucose intolerance may be a body weight-independent phenomenon in women with PCOS.
