Abstract:With the frequent occurrence of drone-related criminal cases, drone forensics has become a hot spot of concern. During drone-related criminal investigations, the implicated drones are often forcibly brought down, which poses significant challenges in conducting forensic analysis. In order to restore the truth of criminal cases, it is necessary to extract data not only from the external TF card but also from internal chip memory in drone forensics. To address this issue, a drone data parser (DRDP) is proposed to extract internal and external data from criminal-implicated drones. In this paper, we present comprehensive forensics on the DJI Mavic 2 Pro, analyzing the main file structure and encryption model. According to its file structures, three case studies are conducted on various file types (DAT files, TXT files, and default files) to verify the effectiveness and applicability of the designed procedure. The results show that the encrypted data of the implicated drone, such as GPS information, flight time, flight altitude, flight distance, three velocity components (x, y, z) and other information can be extracted and decrypted correctly, which provides evidence for the identification of the case facts.
A Digital Forensics Case Study of the DJI Mini 3 Pro and DJI RC

Abstract:The consumer drone market is rapidly expanding with new drone models featuring unique variations of hardware and software. The rapid development of drone technology and variability in drone systems can make it difficult for digital forensic investigators and tools to keep pace and effectively extract and analyse digital evidence from drones. Furthermore, the growing popularity of drones and their increased use in illegal and harmful activities, such as smuggling, espionage, and even terrorism, has led to an increase in the number of drone forensic cases for authorities to manage. To assist forensic investigators, a static digital forensic case study was conducted on two drone devices recently released by Da-Jiang Innovations (DJI): the Mini 3 Pro drone, and its remote controller, the DJI RC. The study discovered the presence of several digital artefacts on both devices, including recorded media, flight logs, and other information that could help investigators trace the drone's usage and identify its operator. Additionally, this paper explored several methods for extracting and visualising the drone's flight history, and highlights some of the potential methods used to limit, obscure, or remove key types of digital evidence.

Abstract:The market for consumer drones is growing and drones are becoming ever more pervasive than before in our life. However, drones have also brought about severe privacy violations and even safety issues. Especially, drones with cameras can snap pictures or take private videos. Researchers have designed drone detection mechanisms by passively inspecting the radio frequency (RF) signal in the communication channel between a drone and its controller. However, passive detection solutions shall fail when drones are in autopilot mode without control signals from controllers. In this paper, we seek to detect autopilot drones that transmit no RF signals by developing a proactive detection system named Dr. Defender. To this end, we resort to the Wi-Fi signals prevalent at each house and propose a proactive drone detection mechanism. To facilitate the detection of drones with Wi-Fi, we first study the motion characteristics of drones, including the shifting, moving, and spinning of propellers that can uniquely represent a drone. Then we investigate the physical layer information of Wi-Fi signals, i.e., the channel state information (CSI), to reveal specific motions of a drone. Finally, we implement our CSI-based proactive drone detection system, which requires no signal transmission from a drone or its controller. We extensively validate the feasibility and performance of our solution under different distances and directions of drones relative to a window. Results show that Dr. Defender can accurately detect drones 10 meters away.

Abstract:Drones or UAVs (Unmanned Air Vehicles) have a great potential to cause concerns over privacy, trespassing and safety. This is due to the increasing availability of drones and their capabilities of travelling large distances and taking high resolution photographs and videos. From a criminological perspective, drones are an ideal method of smuggling, physically removing the operator from the act. It is for this reason that drones are also being utilised as deadly weapons in conflict areas. The need for forensic research to successfully analyse captured drones is rising. The challenges that drones present include the need to interpret flight data and tackling the multi-platform nature of drone systems. This paper reports the extraction and interpretation of important artefacts found in the recorded flight logs on both the internal memory of the UAV and the controlling application, as well as analysis of media, logs and other important files for identifying artefacts. In addition, some basic scripts will be utilised to demonstrate the potential for developing fully fledged forensics tools applicable to other platforms. Tests of anti-forensics measures will also be reported.

Abstract:Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have revolutionized numerous application fields since their introduction. Alongside this, advancements in mechanics and electronics have simplified and decreased the cost of system design. As a consequence, UAVs have dominated the global market across all sectors from recreational products to military applications. However, the widespread use of UAVs has also contributed to an increase in criminal activity involving them. UAVs have become a common means of delivering narcotics, arms, and ammunition, collecting sensitive personal information, and snooping in restricted areas, among other activities. This could constitute a threat to national security. Despite its growing significance, UAV forensics is still a relatively unexplored field of study. In this paper, we present new insights on UAV forensic analysis in terms of preliminary analysis, accessing the digital containers of the UAV, and retrieving vital data. With the aid of a simulated scenario, a comprehensive methodology for the analysis of retrieved data to establish conclusions on the flight path, source of origin, recover flight data, and acquire media file content is presented.

Abstract:The drone has been applied in various areas due to its small size, high mobility and low price. However, illegal uses of drones have posed huge threats to both public safety and personal privacy. There is an urgent demand for technologies that can timely detect and counter the drones. In this paper, we propose an adaptive switching spatial-temporal fusion detection method for remote flying drones in the airspace using electrical-optical cameras, which can enhance the contrast between the target and background as well as suppressing the noises and clutters simultaneously. For each incoming video frame, a dark-attentive interframe difference method and a row-column separate black-hat method are proposed to generate temporal feature maps (TFM) and spatial feature maps (SFM), respectively, in parallel. Inspired by the phenomenon that the features in TFMs and SFMs both go strong at the regions of the intended target while they do not at other regions where noises and clutters locate, we design an adaptive switching spatial-temporal fusion mechanism to fuse the SFMs and TFMs, generating adaptive switching spatial-temporal feature maps (ASSTFM). Finally, an adaptive local threshold mechanism is used in ASSTFMs to segment the targets from backgrounds. In order to validate the effectiveness of our method, we conduct both offline experiments and field tests. The experiment results manifest that our method is superior to the other seven baseline methods and works more stably for different backgrounds and various types of drones.

Therefore, it is of paramount importance to identify these malicious drones and track their origins using digital forensics. Traditional drone identification techniques for forensics (e.g., RF communication, ID landmarks using a camera, etc.) require high compliance of drones. However, malicious drones will not cooperate or even spoof these identification techniques. Therefore, we present an exploration for a reliable and passive identification approach based on unique hardware traits in drones directly (e.g., analogous to the fingerprint and iris in humans) for forensics purposes. Specifically, we investigate and model the behavior of the parasitic electronic elements under RF interrogation, a particular passive parasitic response modulated by an electronic system on drones, which is distinctive and unlikely to counterfeit. Based on this theory, we design and implement DroneTrace, an end-to-end reliable and passive identification system toward digital drone forensics. DroneTrace comprises a cost-effective millimeter-wave (mmWave) probe, a software framework to extract and process parasitic responses, and a customized deep neural network (DNN)-based algorithm to analyze and identify drones. We evaluate the performance of DroneTrace with 36 commodity drones. Results show that DroneTrace can identify drones with the accuracy of over 99% and an equal error rate (EER) of 0.009, under a 0.1-second sensing time budget. Moreover, we test the reliability, robustness, and performance variation under a set of real-world circumstances, where DroneTrace maintains accuracy of over 98%. DroneTrace is resilient to various attacks and maintains functionality. At its best, DroneTrace has the capacity to identify individual drones at the scale of 104 with less than 5% error.

Abstract:This research paper entails an examination of the Enhanced Wi-Fi protocol, focusing on its control command reverse-engineering analysis and subsequent demonstration of a hijacking attack. Our investigation discovered vulnerabilities in the Enhanced Wi-Fi control commands, rendering them susceptible to hijacking attacks. Notably, the study established that even readily available and cost-effective commercial off-the-shelf Wi-Fi routers could be leveraged as effective tools for executing such attacks. To illustrate this vulnerability, a proof-of-concept remote hijacking attack was carried out on a DJI Mini SE drone, whereby we intercepted the control commands to manipulate the drone's flight trajectory. The findings of this research emphasize the critical necessity of implementing robust security measures to safeguard unmanned aerial vehicles against potential hijacking threats. Considering that civilian drones are now used as war weapons, the study underscores the urgent need for further exploration and advancement in the domain of civilian drone security.

Drone Security and the Mysterious Case of DJI's DroneID

Abstract:—Consumer drones enable high-class aerial video photography, promise to reform the logistics industry, and are already used for humanitarian rescue operations and during armed conflicts. Contrasting their widespread adoption and high popularity, the low entry barrier for air mobility—a traditionally heavily regulated sector—poses many risks to safety, security, and privacy. Malicious parties could, for example, (mis-)use drones for surveillance, transportation of illegal goods, or cause economic damage by intruding the closed airspace above air-ports. To prevent harm, drone manufacturers employ several countermeasures to enforce safe and secure use of drones, e.g., they impose software limits regarding speed and altitude, or use geofencing to implement no-fly zones around airports or prisons. Complementing traditional countermeasures, drones from the market leader DJI implement a tracking protocol called DroneID, which is designed to transmit the position of both the drone and its operator to authorized entities such as law enforcement or operators of critical infrastructures. In this paper, we analyze security and privacy claims for drones, focusing on the leading manufacturer DJI with a market share of 94%. We first systemize the drone attack surface and investigate an attacker capable of eavesdropping on the drone’s over-the-air data traffic. Based on reverse engineering of DJI firmware, we design and implement a decoder for DJI’s proprietary tracking protocol DroneID, using only cheap COTS hardware. We show that the transmitted data is not encrypted, but accessible to anyone, compromising the drone operator’s privacy. Second, we conduct a comprehensive analysis of drone security: Using a combination of reverse engineering, a novel fuzzing approach tailored to DJI’s communication protocol, and hardware analysis, we uncover several critical flaws in drone firmware that allow attackers to gain elevated privileges on two different DJI drones and their remote control. Abstract:Nowadays, a plethora of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) designs that significantly vary in size, shape, operating flight altitude, and flight range have been developed to provide multidimensional capabilities across a wide range of military and civil applications. In the field of forensic and police applications, drones are becoming increasingly used instead of helicopters to assist field officers to search for vulnerable missing persons or to target criminals in crime hotspots, and also to provide high-quality data for the documentation and reconstruction of the forensic scene or to facilitate evidence detection. This paper aims to examine the contribution of UAVs in real-time evidence detection in outdoor crime scene investigations. It should be highlighted that the project innovates by providing a quantitative comparative analysis of UAV-based and traditional search methods through the simulation of a crime scene investigation for evidence detection. The first experimental phase tested the usefulness of UAVs as a forensic detection tool by posing the dilemma of humans or drones. The second phase examined the ability of the drone to reproduce the obtained performance results in different terrains, while the third phase tested the accuracy in detection by subjecting the drone-recorded videos to computer vision techniques. The experimental results indicate that drone deployment in evidence detection can provide increased accuracy and speed of detection over a range of terrain types. Additionally, it was found that real-time object detection based on computer vision techniques could be the key enabler of drone-based investigations if interoperability between drones and these techniques is achieved.
Challenges in Drone Firmware Analyses of Drone Firmware and Its Solutions

Abstract:With the advancement of Internet of Things (IoT) technology, its applications span various sectors such as public, industrial, private and military. In particular, the drone sector has gained significant attention for both commercial and military purposes. As a result, there has been a surge in research focused on vulnerability analysis of drones. However, most security research to mitigate threats to IoT devices has focused primarily on networks, firmware and mobile applications. Of these, the use of fuzzing to analyze the security of firmware requires emulation of the firmware. However, when it comes to drone firmware, the industry lacks emulation and automated fuzzing tools. This is largely due to challenges such as limited input interfaces, firmware encryption and signatures. While it may be tempting to assume that existing emulators and automated analyzers for IoT devices can be applied to drones, practical applications have proven otherwise. In this paper, we discuss the challenges of dynamically analyzing drone firmware and propose potential solutions. In addition, we demonstrate the effectiveness of our methodology by applying it to DJI drones, which have the largest market share.

Abstract:Drones, also known as unmanned air vehicles (UAVs), have revolutionised various industries, from farming to national security. (Wexler., Lesley. 2016) However, their broad use has revealed a severe weakness in cybersecurity. (Jean-Paul Yaacoub 2020) The urgent necessity to defend UAV networks from new cyber threats is explored in-depth in this research, making it a crucial subject for both technological development and national security. The two essential areas of our study are assault simulation and threat analysis in cybersecurity. This work demonstrates how easy it is to hack a drone mid-flight using only a Raspberry Pi3 and open-source online tools. This work illustrates the ability to penetrate a DJI drone currently used by the mercenary soldiers in the Ukraine war. (Greg Myre March, 2023) This research examines strategies used to attack UAV networks, such as the de-authentic attack and the man-in-the-middle attack. This work investigates the weaknesses in these networks' sophisticated attack simulations with a Raspberry PI 3 and the Alpha network adaptor from Amazon, showing that basic tools are needed to perform cyberattacks on drones. This research proposes creative solutions and preventative methods for protecting UAV operations and highlights the seriousness of the problem. As drones become more prevalent daily, maintaining their security becomes crucial. This work provides a compelling perspective on protecting vital infrastructure and preserving our skies by bridging the gap between the latest technologies and cybersecurity.

Flying Eyes and Hidden Controllers: A Qualitative Study of People's Privacy Perceptions of Civilian Drones in The US.

Abstract:Abstract Drones are unmanned aircraft controlled remotely or operated autonomously. While the extant literature suggests that drones can in principle invade people’s privacy, little is known about how people actually think about drones. Drawing from a series of in-depth interviews conducted in the United States, we provide a novel and rich account of people’s privacy perceptions of drones for civilian uses both in general and under specific usage scenarios. Our informants raised both physical and information privacy issues against government, organization and individual use of drones. Informants’ reasoning about the acceptance of drone use was in part based on whether the drone is operating in a public or private space. However, our informants differed significantly in their definitions of public and private spaces. While our informants’ privacy concerns such as surveillance, data collection and sharing have been raised for other tracking technologies such as camera phones and closed-circuit television (CCTV), our interviews highlight two heightened issues of drones: (1) powerful yet inconspicuous data collection, (2) hidden and inaccessible drone controllers. These two aspects of drones render some of people’s existing privacy practices futile (e.g., notice recording and ask controllers to stop or delete the recording). Some informants demanded notifications of drones near them and expected drone controllers asking for their explicit permissions before recording. We discuss implications for future privacy-enhancing drone designs.
Research on Vision-Based Servoing and Trajectory Prediction Strategy for Capturing Illegal Drones

Abstract:A proposed strategy for managing airspace and preventing illegal drones from compromising security involves the use of autonomous drones equipped with three key functionalities. Firstly, the implementation of YOLO-v5 technology allows for the identification of illegal drones and the establishment of a visual-servo system to determine their relative position to the autonomous drone. Secondly, an extended Kalman filter algorithm predicts the flight trajectory of illegal drones, enabling the autonomous drone to compensate in advance and significantly enhance the capture success rate. Lastly, to ensure system robustness and suppress interference from illegal drones, an adaptive fast nonsingular terminal sliding mode technique is employed. This technique achieves finite time convergence of the system state and utilizes delay estimation technology for the real-time compensation of unknown disturbances. The stability of the closed-loop system is confirmed through Lyapunov theory, and a model-based hardware-in-the-loop simulation strategy is adopted to streamline system development and improve efficiency. Experimental results demonstrate that the designed autonomous drone accurately predicts the trajectory of illegal drones, effectively captures them using a robotic arm, and maintains stable flight throughout the process.

Abstract:Drones have been widely utilized in various fields, but the number of drones being used illegally and for hazardous purposes has increased recently. To prevent those illegal drones, in this work, we propose a novel framework for reconstructing 3D trajectories of drones using a single camera. By leveraging calibrated cameras, we exploit the relationship between 2D and 3D spaces. We automatically track the drones in 2D images using the drone tracker and estimate their 2D rotations. By combining the estimated 2D drone positions with their actual length information and camera parameters, we geometrically infer the 3D trajectories of the drones. To address the lack of public drone datasets, we also create synthetic 2D and 3D drone datasets. The experimental results show that the proposed methods accurately reconstruct drone trajectories in 3D space, and demonstrate the potential of our framework for single camera-based surveillance systems.

Abstract:The evolution of drone technology in the past nine years since the first commercial drone was introduced at CES 2010 has caused many individuals and businesses to adopt drones for various purposes. We are currently living in an era in which drones are being used for pizza delivery, the shipment of goods, and filming, and they are likely to provide an alternative for transportation in the near future. However, drones also pose a significant challenge in terms of security and privacy within society (for both individuals and organizations), and many drone related incidents are reported on a daily basis. These incidents have called attention to the need to detect and disable drones used for malicious purposes and opened up a new area of research and development for academia and industry, with a market that is expected to reach $1.85 billion by 2024. While some of the knowledge used to detect UAVs has been adopted for drone detection, new methods have been suggested by industry and academia alike to deal with the challenges associated with detecting the very small and fast flying objects. In this paper, we describe new societal threats to security and privacy created by drones, and present academic and industrial methods used to detect and disable drones. We review methods targeted at areas that restrict drone flights and analyze their effectiveness with regard to various factors (e.g., weather, birds, ambient light, etc.). We present the challenges arising in areas that allow drone flights, introduce the methods that exist for dealing with these challenges, and discuss the scientific gaps that exist in this area. Finally, we review methods used to disable drones, analyze their effectiveness, and present their expected results. Finally, we suggest future research directions.

Abstract:The increasing use of civil unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) has the potential to threaten public safety and privacy. Therefore, airspace administrators urgently need an effective method to regulate UAVs. Understanding the meaning and format of UAV flight control commands by automatic protocol reverse-engineering techniques is highly beneficial to UAV regulation. To improve our understanding of the meaning and format of UAV flight control commands, this paper proposes a method to automatically analyze the private flight control protocols of UAVs. First, we classify flight control commands collected from a binary network trace into clusters; then, we analyze the meaning of flight control commands by the accumulated error of each cluster; next, we extract the binary format of commands and infer field semantics in these commands; and finally, we infer the location of the check field in command and the generator polynomial matrix. The proposed approach is validated via experiments on a widely used consumer UAV.

Abstract:As drones attracts a lot of income, the drones business has opened their market to normal people, making drones to be used in daily lives. In any case, as it got more clear for drones to be used by more people, prosperity and security issues have raised as setbacks are significantly more responsible to happen: colliding with people by letting totally go or assaulting got properties. For the end goal of prosperity, it is principal for observers and drones to be aware of an approaching drones. A couple of structures are planned to be operable on meanders aimlessly with camera. Taking into account the camera pictures, the structure closes region on picture and merchant model of drones considering machine classification. Some system propose a visual-inertial drones system for consistent development area, to be explicit REDBEE, that routs challenges in shooting scenes with strong parallax and dynamic establishment[1]. REDBEE, which can run on the top tier business low-power application processor (for instance Snapdragon Flight load up used for our model drones), achieves consistent execution with high acknowledgment accuracy.These methodologies are for locally accessible moving things recognizable proof structure on camera drone. Such structure can truly manage the tradeoff of the area accuracy and estimation speed on an energy-useful hardware whose handling power is basically below average contrasted with PCs and servers. Some systems uses Artificial Intelligence and designed to be operable on drones with camera. Based on the camera images, these system deduces location on image and vendor model of drone based on machine classification. They are built with OpenCV library[2]. Close by the above we have Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), DNNs gain depiction from data with a critical capacity, and brought huge jump advances for taking care of pictures, time-series, ordinary language, sound, video, and various others[3]. Recently, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV)-built applications have conquered aerial sensing research. In this paper, we compared some of the drone detection techniques and their performances to get a better idea for drone detection in future.

Abstract:Drones have created a new threat to people's privacy. We are now in an era in which anyone with a drone equipped with a video camera can use it to invade a subject's privacy by streaming the subject in his/her private space over an encrypted first person view (FPV) channel. Although many methods have been suggested to detect nearby drones, they all suffer from the same shortcoming: they cannot identify exactly what is being captured, and therefore they fail to distinguish between the legitimate use of a drone (for example, to use a drone to film a selfie from the air) and illegitimate use that invades someone's privacy (when the same operator uses the drone to stream the view into the window of his neighbor's apartment), a distinction that in some cases depends on the orientation of the drone's video camera rather than on the drone's location. In this paper we shatter the commonly held belief that the use of encryption to secure an FPV channel prevents an interceptor from extracting the POI that is being streamed. We show methods that leverage physical stimuli to detect whether the drone's camera is directed towards a target in real time. We investigate the influence of changing pixels on the FPV channel (in a lab setup). Based on our observations we demonstrate how an interceptor can perform a side-channel attack to detect whether a target is being streamed by analyzing the encrypted FPV channel that is transmitted from a real drone (DJI Mavic) in two use cases: when the target is a private house and when the target is a subject.
