Abstract:Actinidia valvata possesses waterlogging tolerance; however, the mechanisms underlying this trait are poorly characterized. Here, we performed a transcriptome analysis by combining single-molecule real-time (SMRT) sequencing and Illumina RNA sequencing and investigated the physiological responses of the roots of KR5 (A. valvata, a tolerant genotype) after 0, 12, 24 and 72 h of waterlogging stress. KR5 roots responded to waterlogging stress mainly via carbohydrate and free amino acids metabolism and reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenging pathways. Trehalose-6-phosphate synthase (TPS) activity, alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) activity and the total free amino acid content increased significantly under waterlogging stress. The nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide-dependent glutamate synthase/alanine aminotransferase (NADH-GOGAT/AlaAT) cycle was correlated with alanine accumulation. Levels of genes encoding peroxidase (POD) and catalase (CAT) decreased and enzyme activity increased under waterlogging stress. Members of the LATERAL ORGAN BOUNDARIES (LOB), AP2/ERF-ERF, Trihelix and C3H transcription factor families were identified as potential regulators of the transcriptional response. Several hub genes were identified as key factors in the response to waterlogging stress by a weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). Our results provide insights into the factors contributing to waterlogging tolerance in kiwifruit, providing a basis for further studies of interspecific differences in an important plant trait and for molecular breeding.

Abstract:Waterlogging is becoming an increasingly significant problem for crop production and food security. As one of the largest transcription factor (TFs) families in plant crops, WRKYs are reported to be involved in various abiotic stress responses, including waterlogging resistance. However, little is known about the molecular regulation of WRKYs responding to waterlogging stress in kiwifruit plant (Actinidia chinensis). Based on the transcriptome and genome database, a total of 112 AcWRKYs, which were divided into seven subgroups, had been identified in A. chinensis cv. Donghong. Transcript levels of 7 out of these 112 AcWRKYs showed closely correlation with increasing of acetaldehyde and ethanol contents resulted from the high expression of AcPDCs and AcADHs during waterlogging response of the roots. AcWRKY117 and AcWRKY29, which were clustered into group I and II-e respectively, had been verified to trans-activate the expression of AcPDC2 based on the results of dual lucif-erase assays. Both AcWRKY117 and AcWRKY29 could bind to the w-box (5 '-TGACC (A/T)-3 ') motif located in target promoter of AcPDC2. Furthermore, contents of acetaldehyde and ethanol in both 35S::AcWRKY117 and 35S::AcWRKY29 overexpression kiwifruit calli had been significantly increased. These were consisted with the significant higher transcript levels of AcPDCs and AcADHs, as well as AcERF74 and AcERF75 which trans-activate the activity of AcADH1 promoter, in the transgenic kiwifruit calli. Moreover, the expression pattern of AcWRKY117 had been dramatically induced in 35S::AcWRKY29 transgenic lines, and vice verse. Taken together, our results provide molecular evidence for WRKYs regulation on waterlogging response in kiwifruit.
Restricted Responses of AcMYB68 and AcERF74/75 Enhanced Waterlogging Tolerance in Kiwifruit.

Thus, 19 differentially expressed transcript factors (DETFs) had been isolated using weighted gene co-expression network analysis combined with transcriptomics and transcript levels of PDCs and ADHs in waterlogged "DH". Among these DETFs, dual luciferase and electrophoretic mobility shift assays indicated AcMYB68 could bind to and trigger the activity of AcPDC2 promoter. The stable over-expression of AcMYB68 significantly up-regulated the transcript levels of PDCs but inhibited the plant growth, especially the roots. Moreover, the enzyme activities of PDC in 35S::AcMYB68 were significantly enhanced during the waterlogging response than that in wild type plants. Abstract:Citrus is one of the most economically important fruit crops around world. Drought and salinity stresses adversely affected its productivity and fruit quality. However, the genetic regulatory networks and signaling pathways involved in drought and salinity remain to be elucidated. With RNA-seq and sRNA-seq, an integrative analysis of miRNA and mRNA expression profiling and their regulatory networks were conducted using citrus roots subjected to dehydration and salt treatment. Differentially expressed (DE) mRNA and miRNA profiles were obtained according to fold change analysis and the relationships between miRNAs and target mRNAs were found to be coherent and incoherent in the regulatory networks. GO enrichment analysis revealed that some crucial biological processes related to signal transduction (e.g. ‘MAPK cascade’), hormone-mediated signaling pathways (e.g. abscisic acid- activated signaling pathway’), reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolic process (e.g. ‘hydrogen peroxide catabolic process’) and transcription factors (e.g., ‘MYB, ZFP and bZIP’) were involved in dehydration and/or salt treatment. The molecular players in response to dehydration and salt treatment were partially overlapping. Quantitative reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) analysis further confirmed the results from RNA-seq and sRNA-seq analysis. This study provides new insights into the molecular mechanisms how citrus roots respond to dehydration and salt treatment.
Waterlogging Tolerance of Actinidia valvata Dunn Is Associated with High Activities of Pyruvate Decarboxylase, Alcohol Dehydrogenase and Antioxidant Enzymes

Abstract:Kiwifruit (Actinidia spp.) is susceptible to waterlogging stress. Although abundant wild germplasm resources exist among Actinidia plants for improving the waterlogging tolerance of kiwifruit cultivars, the underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, a comparative study was undertaken using one wild germplasm, Maorenshen (A. valvata Dunn, MRS), and one cultivar, Miliang-1 (A. chinensis var. deliciosa (A.Chev.) A.Chev. cv. Miliang-1, ML). Under stress, the ML plantlets were seriously damaged with wilted chlorotic leaves and blackened rotten roots, whereas the symptoms of injury in the MRS plantlets were much fewer, along with higher photosynthetic rates, chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics and root activity under stress conditions. However, neither aerenchyma in the root nor adventitious roots appeared in both germplasms upon stress exposure. The activities of pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC) and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH), as well as their transcript levels, were constitutively higher in MRS than those in ML under both normal and stress conditions. Waterlogging stress significantly enhanced the PDC and ADH enzyme activities in both germplasms, which were 60.8% and 22.4% higher in the MRS roots than those in the ML roots under waterlogging stress, respectively. Moreover, MRS displayed higher activities of antioxidant enzymes, including SOD, CAT, and APX, as well as DPPH-radical scavenging ability, and decreased H2O2 and MDA accumulation under both normal and stress conditions. Our findings suggest that the waterlogging tolerance of the wild A. valvata germplasm was associated with high PDC and ADH, as well as antioxidant ability.

Abstract:Kiwifruit plants have a fleshy, shallow root system which is sensitive to waterlogging stress, which results in a decrease in crop yield or even plants death. Although the waterlogging stress responses in kiwifruit have attracted much attention, the underlying molecular mechanism remains unclear. In this study, waterlogging led to drastic inhibition of root growth of 'Donghong' kiwifruit (Actinidia chinensis) plants grown in vitro, which was accompanied by significant elevation of endogenous acetaldehyde and ethanol contents. RNA-seq of roots of plants waterlogged for 0, 1 and 2 days revealed that a total of 149 genes were up- or down-regulated, including seven biosynthetic genes related to the glycolysis/gluconeogenesis pathway and 10 transcription factors. Analyses with real-time PCR, dual-luciferase assays and EMSA demonstrated that AcERF74 and AcERF75, two members of the ERF-VII subfamily, directly upregulated AcADH1 (alcohol dehydrogenase). Moreover, the overexpression of AcERF74/75 in transgenic calli resulted in dramatic increase of endogenous ethanol contents through the triggering of AcADH1 and AcADH2 expression. Although the AcPDC2 (pyruvate decarboxylase) expression was also enhanced in transgenic lines, the endogenous acetaldehyde contents showed no significant changes. These results illustrated that AcERF74/75 are two transcriptional activators on alcoholic fermentation related genes and are responsive to waterlogging stress in kiwifruit.

Abstract:Apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.) is one of the most cultivated fruit crops in China. Apple trees frequently encounter waterlogging stress, mainly due to excess rainfall, soil compaction, or poor soil drainage, results in yellowing leaves and declined fruit quality and yield in some regions. However, the mechanism underlying the response to waterlogging has not been well elucidated. Therefore, we performed a physiological and transcriptomic analysis to examine the differential responses of two apple rootstocks (waterlogging-tolerant M. hupehensis and waterlogging-sensitive M. toringoides) to waterlogging stress. The results showed that M. toringoides displayed more severe leaf chlorosis during the waterlogging treatment than M. hupehensis. Compared with M. hupehensis, the more severe leaf chlorosis induced by waterlogging stress in M. toringoides was highly correlated with increased electrolyte leakage and superoxide radicals, hydrogen peroxide accumulation, and increased stomata closure. Interestingly, M. toringoides also conveyed a higher ethylene production under waterlogging stress. Furthermore, RNA-seq revealed that a total of 13,913 common differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were differentially regulated between M. hupehensis and M. toringoides under waterlogging stress, especially those DEGs involved in the biosynthesis of flavonoids and hormone signaling. This suggests a possible link of flavonoids and hormone signaling to waterlogging tolerance. Taken together, our data provide the targeted genes for further investigation of the functions, as well as for future molecular breeding of waterlogging-tolerant apple rootstocks.

Abstract:Water deficit is one of the major factors limiting crop productivity worldwide. Plant roots play a key role in uptaking water, perceiving and transducing of water deficit signals to shoot. Although the mechanisms of drought-tolerance have been reported recently, the transcriptional regulatory network of wheat root response to water stress has not been fully understood. In this study, drought-tolerant cultivar JM-262 and susceptible cultivar LM-2 are planted to characterize the root transcriptional changes and physiological responses to water deficit. A total of 8197 drought tolerance-associated differentially expressed genes (DEGs) are identified, these genes are mainly mapped to carbon metabolism, flavonoid biosynthesis, and phytohormone signal transduction. The number and expression level of DEGs involved in antioxidative and antiosmotic stresses are more enhanced in JM-262 under water stress. Furthermore, we find the DEGs related to root development are much more induced in JM-262 in phytohormone signal transduction and carbon metabolism pathway. In conclusion, JM-262 may alleviate the damage of drought by producing more osmoprotectants, ROS scavengers, biomass and energy. Interestingly, hormone signaling and cross-talk probably play an important role in promoting JM-262 greater root systems to take up more water, higher capabilities to induce more drought-related DEGs and higher resisitance to oxidative stresse.
Overexpression of Actinidia deliciosa pyruvate decarboxylase 1 gene enhances waterlogging stress in transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana

Abstract:Ethanolic fermentation is classically associated with waterlogging tolerance when plant cells switch from respiration to anaerobic fermentation. Pyruvate decarboxylase (PDC), which catalyzes the first step in this pathway, is thought to be the main regulatory enzyme. Here, we cloned a full-length PDC cDNA sequence from kiwifruit, named AdPDC1. We determined the expression of the AdPDC1 gene in kiwifruit under different environmental stresses using qRT-PCR, and the results showed that the increase of AdPDC1 expression during waterlogging stress was much higher than that during salt, cold, heat and drought stresses. Overexpression of kiwifruit AdPDC1 in transgenic Arabidopsis enhanced the resistance to waterlogging stress but could not enhance resistance to cold stress at five weeks old seedlings. Overexpression of kiwifruit AdPDC1 in transgenic Arabidopsis could not enhance resistance to NaCl and mannitol stresses at the stage of seed germination and in early seedlings. These results suggested that the kiwifruit AdPDC1 gene is required during waterlogging but might not be required during other environmental stresses. Expression of the AdPDC1 gene was down-regulated by abscisic acid (ABA) in kiwifruit, and overexpression of the AdPDC1 gene in Arabidopsis inhibited seed germination and root length under ABA treatment, indicating that ABA might negatively regulate the AdPDC1 gene under waterlogging stress.

Abstract:Chilling injury (CI) is a barrier to the refrigeration of kiwifruit, resulting in decreased fruit quality and increased nutrient loss during storage. Understanding the molecular basis underlying the cold response and its regulation in refrigerated kiwifruit is therefore highly important. Basic (region) leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors (TFs) have been widely studied for their roles in abiotic stress resistance in various species. In this study, we identified 81 bZIP family proteins in kiwifruit and classified them into 11 groups. Further transcriptome analysis revealed that the expression of members of the AREB/ABF family was strongly induced by low temperature and abscisic acid (ABA). Ectopic expression of AchnABF1 enhanced plant cold tolerance by upregulating the expression of several key genes associated with ABA-dependent and ABA-independent pathways in Arabidopsis thaliana. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism was suggested to be involved in the AchnABF1-mediated osmotic stress response. For instance, enhanced ROS-scavenging ability was observed in transgenic plants with enhanced activity of catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD), which resulted in decreased in situ O-2(center dot-) and H2O2 accumulation, ion leakage, and malondialdehyde (MDA) content under various abiotic stresses. In addition, AchnABF1 also participated in the osmotic stress response during both the germination and postgermination stages. We concluded that AchnABF1 may play an important role in kiwifruit during refrigeration.

Abstract:Citrus plants are sensitive to waterlogging, which can cause yield reduction. Their production heavily depends on the rootstock being used for grafting of scion cultivars, and the rootstock is the first organ to be affected by waterlogging stress. However, the underlying molecular mechanisms of waterlogging stress tolerance remain elusive. In this study we investigated the stress response of two waterlogging-tolerant citrus varieties ( Citrus junos Sieb ex Tanaka cv. Pujiang Xiangcheng and Ziyang Xiangcheng), and one waterlogging-sensitive variety (red tangerine) at the morphological, physiological, and genetic levels in leaf and root tissues of partially submerged plants. The results showed that waterlogging stress significantly decreased the SPAD value and root length but did not obviously affect the stem length and new root numbers. The malondialdehyde (MDA) content and the enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), guaiacol peroxidase (POD), and catalase (CAT) were enhanced in the roots. The RNA-seq analysis revealed that the differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were mainly linked to 'cutin, suberine, and wax biosynthesis', 'diterpenoid biosynthesis', and 'glycerophospholipid metabolism' in the leaves, whereas were linked to 'flavonoid biosynthesis', 'biosynthesis of secondary metabolites and metabolic pathways' in the roots. Finally, we developed a working model based on our results to elucidate the molecular basis of waterlogging-responsive in citrus. Therefore, our data obtained in this study provided valuable genetic resources that will facilitate the breeding of citrus varieties with improved waterlogging tolerance.

Abstract:Diacylglycerol kinase (DGK) is a lipid kinase that phosphorylates diacylglycerol (DAG) to generate phosphatidic acid (PA). Based on converting one important signaling molecule (DAG) to another (PA), DGK plays an important role in plant responses to abiotic stress, including waterlogging stress. However, no studies have been reported on the characterization of the DGK gene family in the waterlogging-tolerant kiwifruit germplasm Actinidia valvata Dunn. In this study, we identified 18 AvDGK genes in the A. valvata genome. The phylogenetic analysis showed that AvDGKs can be classified into three clusters, and members within the same cluster have similar domain distributions, exon-intron structures, and conserved motif compositions. The chromosome localization analysis revealed that all AvDGK genes are located across 18 different chromosomes. There were 29 duplicated gene pairs in A. valvata and all had undergone purifying selection during evolution. The promoter cis-element analysis revealed that the cis-elements within AvDGK genes are associated with multiple functions, including phytohormone signal transduction, stress responses, and plant growth and development. The expression pattern analyses indicated that AvDGKs play important roles in fruit development and plant responses to waterlogging stress. The AvDGK gene family in the tetraploid A. valvata genome might promote PA synthesis and subsequent signal transduction both under short- and long-term waterlogging stresses. These results provide information regarding the structural characteristics and potential function of AvDGK genes within A. valvata and lay a fundamental basis for further research into breeding to enhance the kiwifruit’s tolerance to waterlogging stress.

Two Ethylene-Responsive Transcription Factors, AdVAL2 and AdKAN2, Regulate Early Steps in Kiwifruit Starch Degradation

Abstract:Starch degradation is considered as an early step in the initiation of kiwifruit postharvest ripening and softening after ethylene treatment, which is driven by various transcription factors (TFs) and genes in the carbohydrate pathway. Studies regarding starch degradation have been conducted after ethylene treatment then removal, but early ethylene responsive genes and their function in triggering starch degradation remains unclear. In this study, a continuous sampling approach was conducted with 2 h intervals throughout 24 h treatment. As a result, starch degradation and accumulation of total soluble solid were accelerated after 10 h ethylene treatment. Based on RNA-seq and Real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) data, three beta-Amylase genes, AdBAM3, AdBAM3.1 and AdBAM3L, were significantly up-regulated in ethylene treated samples. Weighted Gene Co-expression Network Analysis (WGCNA) identified TFs that are highly correlated with these three BAM genes, based on gene expression patterns. AdVAL2 (a B3 domain-containing transcription factor) and AdKAN2 (a MYB-like domaincontaining transcription factor) were found to transcriptionally repress the promoter activity of AdBAM3 and AdBAM3L, respectively. Additionally, the expression of both AdVAL2 and AdKAN2 was observed to be repressed by ethylene treatment. Transient overexpression analysis confirmed the inhibitory effect of AdVAL2 and AdKAN2 on the expression of BAM genes, resulting in starch accumulation in kiwifruit. Altogether, continuous sampling during ethylene exposure has revealed that these early ethylene responsive TFs could be the potential triggers for starch degradation.
Effects of Drought and Flooding on Phytohormones and Abscisic Acid Gene Expression in Kiwifruit

Abstract:Environmental extremes, such as drought and flooding, are becoming more common with global warming, resulting in significant crop losses. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the plant water stress response, regulated by the abscisic acid (ABA) pathway, is crucial to building resilience to climate change. Potted kiwifruit plants (two cultivars) were exposed to contrasting watering regimes (water logging and no water). Root and leaf tissues were sampled during the experiments to measure phytohormone levels and expression of ABA pathway genes. ABA increased significantly under drought conditions compared with the control and waterlogged plants. ABA-related gene responses were significantly greater in roots than leaves. ABA responsive genes, DREB2 and WRKY40, showed the greatest upregulation in roots with flooding, and the ABA biosynthesis gene, NCED3, with drought. Two ABA-catabolic genes, CYP707A i and ii were able to differentiate the water stress responses, with upregulation in flooding and downregulation in drought. This study has identified molecular markers and shown that water stress extremes induced strong phytohormone/ABA gene responses in the roots, which are the key site of water stress perception, supporting the theory kiwifruit plants regulate ABA to combat water stress.

Abstract:Drought stress has detrimental effects on crop productivity worldwide. A strong root system is crucial for maintaining water and nutrients uptake under drought stress. Wild watermelons possess resilient roots with excellent drought adaptability. However, the genetic factors controlling this trait remain uninvestigated. In this study, we conducted a bulk segregant analysis (BSA) on an F2 population consisting of two watermelon genotypes, wild and domesticated, which differ in their lateral root development under drought conditions. We identified two quantitative trait loci (qNLR_Dr. Chr01 and qNLR_Dr. Chr02) associated with the lateral root response to drought. Furthermore, we determined that a small region (0.93 Mb in qNLR_Dr. Chr01) is closely linked to drought adaptation through quantitative trait loci (QTL) validation and fine mapping. Transcriptome analysis of the parent roots under drought stress revealed unique effects on numerous genes in the sensitive genotype but not in the tolerant genotype. By integrating BSA, fine mapping, and the transcriptome, we identified six genes, namely L-Ascorbate Oxidase (AO), Cellulose Synthase-Interactive Protein 1 (CSI1), Late Embryogenesis Abundant Protein (LEA), Zinc-Finger Homeodomain Protein 2 (ZHD2), Pericycle Factor Type-A 5 (PFA5), and bZIP transcription factor 53-like (bZIP53-like), that might be involved in the drought adaptation. Our findings provide valuable QTLs and genes for marker-assisted selection in improving water-use efficiency and drought tolerance in watermelon. They also lay the groundwork for the genetic manipulation of drought-adapting genes in watermelon and other Cucurbitacea species.

Abstract:Introduction: Watermelon is an annual vine of the family Cucurbitaceae. Watermelon plants produce a fruit that people love and have important nutritional and economic value. With global warming and deterioration of the ecological environment, abiotic stresses, including drought, have become important factors that impact the yield and quality of watermelon plants. Previous research on watermelon drought resistance has included analyzing homologous genes based on known drought-responsive genes and pathways in other species. Methods: However, identifying key pathways and genes involved in watermelon drought resistance through high-throughput omics methods is particularly important. In this study, RNA-seq and metabolomic analysis were performed on watermelon plants at five time points (0 h, 1 h, 6 h, 12 h and 24 h) before and after drought stress. Results: Transcriptomic analysis revealed 7829 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) at the five time points. The DEGs were grouped into five clusters using the k-means clustering algorithm. The functional category for each cluster was annotated based on the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database; different clusters were associated with different time points after stress. A total of 949 metabolites were divided into 10 categories, with lipids and lipid-like molecules accounting for the most metabolites. Differential expression analysis revealed 22 differentially regulated metabolites (DRMs) among the five time points. Through joint analysis of RNA-seq and metabolome data, the 6-h period was identified as the critical period for watermelon drought resistance, and the starch and sucrose metabolism, plant hormone signal transduction and photosynthesis pathways were identified as important regulatory pathways involved in watermelon drought resistance. In addition, 15 candidate genes associated with watermelon drought resistance were identified through joint RNA-seq and metabolome analysis combined with weighted correlation network analysis (WGCNA). Four of these genes encode transcription factors, including bHLH (Cla97C03G068160), MYB (Cla97C01G002440), HSP (Cla97C02G033390) and GRF (Cla97C02G042620), one key gene in the ABA pathway, SnRK2-4 (Cla97C10G186750), and the GP-2 gene (Cla97C05G105810), which is involved in the starch and sucrose metabolism pathway. Discussion: In summary, our study provides a theoretical basis for elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying drought resistance in watermelon plants and provides new genetic resources for the study of drought resistance in this crop.
Elucidating the Molecular Responses to Waterlogging Stress in Cucumis melo by Comparative Transcriptome Profiling

Abstract:Waterlogging is a serious abiotic stressor that drastically hinders the growth and productivity of melon (Cucumis melo) around the world, due to the reduction in available oxygen levels in the waterlogged tissues. However, the mechanism underlying the responses to waterlogging stress in melon is largely unknown. In this study, physiological and transcriptome data of the waterlogging-sensitive accession ‘L39’ and the waterlogging-tolerant accession ‘L45’ were investigated under conditions of normal water supply and waterlogging stress. The results showed that ‘L45’ exhibited higher chlorophyll contents and lower REL (relative electrolyte leakage) and MDA (malondialdehyde) contents compared with ‘L39’ under waterlogging stress. Additionally, waterlogging stress only led to the stomatal closure and chloroplast damage of ‘L39’. In total, 1748 genes were differentially expressed in the leaves of waterlogging-stressed ‘L45’ compared with control, whereas 3178 genes were differentially expressed in ‘L39’. Further analysis indicated that genes related to chlorophyll synthesis and photosynthesis were more depressed in ‘L39’, while sugar cleavage, glycolysis, and fermentation genes were highly induced in ‘L39’ compared with ‘L45’. The expression of genes involved in ROS (reactive oxygen species) scavenging and hormone signaling significantly differed between ‘L39’ and ‘L45’ in their response to waterlogging stress. Moreover, a total of 311 differentially expressed transcription factors were waterlogging-responsive, among which members of the ERF (ethylene response factor), bHLH (basic helix-loop-helix), and WRKY families might play crucial roles in waterlogging tolerance in melon. This study unraveled the molecular responses to waterlogging stress in melon and could provide helpful candidate genes for further molecular breeding of waterlogging-tolerant melon varieties.

Abstract:The grafted seedlings of Actinidia valvata Dunn., susceptible A. deliciosa A Chev. two rootstocks and Donghong, Hongyang, Xiangjihong three scion are used as experimental materials. This experiment detects the growth index of stem and leaf, the porosity of root, the relative permeability of membrane, MDA content and superoxide dismutase activity in different varieties of kiwi seedlings. The results show that the growth rate of grafted seedlings leaf in flood-resistant rootstock is more fast﹔ and flood-resistant rootstock also increases the internode length. Under the flooding stress, the membrane permeability of the flood-resistant kiwi rootstock increased﹔ porosity rate of increase in flood-resistant rootstock is higher than control root-stock﹔ and the MDA content and SOD activity increases first and then decreases. In conclusion, compared with the A. deli-ciosa, A. valvata shows a strong resistance to flooding, and performance in growth.
