Abstract:Geographic studies of suicide variation typically focus on predictors at the same level as the event rates, and the possible interplay between different spatial scales does not generally figure. In this paper we focus on suicide variations between 6856 small area census units in England, but against a background provided by nine regions, broad urban-rural categories, and 155 local labour markets. Suicide death totals vary considerably between the small areas, with more areas than expected having no deaths, so we apply zero inflated regression. With this framework, we consider the relative contribution of factors at higher and lower spatial scales in explaining small area suicide contrasts, and why some areas have unduly elevated or unduly low suicide rates. We find significantly lower suicide levels in English metropolitan regions, after allowing for neighbourhood influences, but considerable heterogeneity in risks within broader spatial units. Varying incidence in general is associated significantly with all observed neighbourhood risk factors (social fragmentation, socioeconomic status, mental ill-health, ethnic mix), but low fragmentation and low psychiatric morbidity are the only significant influences on unduly low incidence.

Abstract:Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) processes through the Stark and electric-quadrupole moment (QDP) transitions of HeI (2(1)S-->n1D-->2(1)P,n=3,4) have been investigated for reliable electric-field measurements in plasmas. A linear-polarization model is formulated for various configurations of electric fields, magnetic fields, and laser polarization. To extend the model to higher-particle-density plasmas we develop a rate-equation model involving a collisional disalignment term. Disalignment rates of n1D states, Rda, due to a collision with He gas were measured. Spatial distributions in intensity and polarization of LIF were observed in a discharge plasma. For n=3 with small Rda, the same electric-field distribution in the sheath was obtained from either of the intensity ratios of the Stark to QDP component and the polarization, and the sheath potential agreed well with that by an electric probe. For n=4 with large Rda, the distribution was also correctly obtained from partially depolarized LIF wave forms by using the extended model. These results show that our extended model provides an accurate measurement of the electric field. The minimum detectable field strength was 80 V/cm for n=4. Application and limitations of the methods are discussed.
Association between social vulnerability factors and homicide and suicide rates - United States, 2016 - 2020

Abstract:Background: Differences in social and environmental factors contribute to disparities in fatal injury rates. This study assessed the relationship between social vulnerability and homicide and suicide rates across United States counties. Methods: County-level age-adjusted homicide and suicide rates for 2016-2020 were linked with data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 2020 Social Vulnerability Index (SVI), a dataset identifying socially vulnerable communities. We conducted negative binomial regressions to examine the association between SVI and homicide and suicide rates, overall and by Census region/division. We mapped county-level data for SVI and homicide and suicide rates in bivariate choropleth maps. Results: Overall SVI was associated with homicide rates across U.S. counties. While no association was found for overall SVI and suicide rates, Socioeconomic Status and Racial & Ethnic Minority Status domains were associated. The geographic distribution of SVI and homicide and suicide rates varied spatially; notably, counties in the South had the greatest levels of social vulnerability and greatest homicide rates. Conclusions: Our findings demonstrate county-level social vulnerability is associated with homicide rates but may be more nuanced for suicide rates. A modified SVI for injury should include additional social and structural determinants and exclude variables not applicable to injuries. Practical applications: This study combines the SVI with homicide and suicide data, enabling researchers to examine related social and environmental factors. Modifying the SVI to include relevant predictors could improve injury prevention strategies by prioritizing efforts in areas with high social vulnerability.
Trend and Geographical Distribution of Suicide Research: A Bibliometric Analysis of Three Decades

Abstract:We aimed to see the trend and geographic distribution of suicide research. We searched in Scopus to identify the articles published on suicide since 1991 and compared the country-wise output in regards to income and geographical location of the country. The study revealed more than twofold increase of articles from an earlier decade and a slight increased output from low and middle income countries (LMICs) over the decades. More than three-fourths of the articles published from top 15 countries where only two countries (India and China) from LMIC backgrounds were featured. About 85% of the papers were published from high-income countries, about 73% of the papers were published from Europe and North America, and about 78% of articles were published from two WHO regions (European Region and Regions of Americas). This study identifies an extreme disparity in research on suicide based on income and geographical location.

Abstract:We aim to identify how relative importance of potential drivers of national suicide rates has changed over time. We apply statistical model averaging techniques to a dataset that covers 25 potential suicide determinants for 172 countries over 20 years. Our application of the weighted average least squares (WALS) approach indicates that some inferences are unstable across time. Suicide determinants related to religious affiliations tend to become less important in recent years. The opposite is true for non-educational measures of human capital, such as life expectancy at age 65, and labour market variables, such as unemployment. Our analysis sheds some light on the differential effects of potential suicide determinants on male and female suicidality and their evolution over time.

Abstract:An important component of the Voluntary Bovine Johne's Disease Control Program is to determine herd infection status for Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP). To help prevent the transmission of MAP, dairy and beef herds providing replacement cattle should know their infection status. Herds acquiring cattle should be fairly confident that the source herd is at low risk for MAP infection. The current requirements for a herd to be considered Level 1 of the test-negative component requires ELISA testing 30 animals followed by fecal culture confirmation of ELISA-positive cattle. Since the ELISA is approximately 25-50% sensitive, many infected herds are classified as low risk and enter Level 1 based on this testing scheme.

Abstract:OMEGA - Journal of Death and Dying, Ahead of Print. This study provides a decadal analysis of national suicide data over 90 years, offering a comprehensive view of long-term trends and current levels in the United States. We analyzed mean decadal suicide numbers, rates, and confidence intervals from the 1930s to the early 2020s across demographic categories including sex, race, and age. Our findings reveal that suicide rates in the 2020s are the highest since the 1930s. The data indicate significant variations across groups; the 2020s show the highest suicide rates for both Whites and Nonwhites, and individuals under 44 years of age. Conversely, men's suicide rates were slightly lower than those in the 1930s, whereas rates for women and older adults peaked during the 1930s. The results underscore the need for ongoing surveillance of suicide trends and proactive suicide prevention measures by governmental and other relevant organizations.

Abstract:Assaying chromium nickel and manganese for specific migrations with a 4%-acetic acid under specific time and temperature related conditions is an obligatory part of the hygienic safety surveillance. Routine surveillance of a larger number of imported cooking utensils has shown the specific migrations to be more or less above the maximum allowances for chromium and/or nickel, and less frequently so for manganese. Further tests with repeated extraction, however, revealed that the levels of all three metals in most of the unfit samples were within the allowed limits. With respect to our findings, and to a longer period of use of the cooking utensils, amendments to the current regulations demanding obligatory testing after repeated extraction seem justified.

Abstract:Suicide is a very contemporary issue in the USA. Despite the social characteristics related with suicide, the discipline of sociology has remained relatively silent on the issue. This paper builds upon Durkheim's approach by using social capital theory as a framework to examine suicide rates across 2688 US counties. Using ordinary least-squared regression modelling, we found that counties with higher rates of social capital, diversity, and population density experienced lower suicide rates. Counties that had higher levels of divorce, unemployment, poverty, education, and median age experienced higher suicide rates.

Abstract:Background The study objective was to investigate the age-related variation of social factors in suicide. Method Age-related variations in marital status, living arrangements, employment and social interaction were investigated in an entire 12-month suicide population in Finland ( n = 1067); these findings were compared with appropriate census data. Results Several social factors varied across age groups among suicides, with some age-related sex differences. Compared with the general population, the suicides were more commonly never married (especially men aged 30–39 years), divorced, and widowed (especially women aged 60–69 years); living alone was more frequent among the suicides, as was living with parents among male suicides aged 25–39 years. A history of psychiatric admission was especially common among young male suicides who had never married or were living with parents. Living alone was particularly frequent among middle-aged male suicides who had misused alcohol. Conclusions While most of the age-related variation in social factors found in suicide seems to parallel the natural variation of these factors in the general population, some social findings in suicide might be related to the victims' psychopathology and excessive alcohol use.

Influence of magnetic resonance of the knee on GPs' decisions: a randomised trial.

Abstract:BACKGROUND Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the knee for meniscus and ligament injuries is an accurate diagnostic test. Early and accurate diagnosis of patients with knee problems may prevent the onset of chronic problems such as osteoarthritis, a common cause of disability in older people consulting their GP. AIM To assess the effect of early access to MRI, compared with referral to an orthopaedic specialist, on GPs' diagnoses and treatment plans for patients with knee problems. DESIGN OF STUDY A multi-centre, pragmatic, randomised controlled trial. SETTING Five hundred and fifty-three patients with knee problems were recruited from 163 general practices across the UK from November 2002 to October 2004. METHOD Eligible patients were randomised to MRI or consultation with an orthopaedic specialist. GPs made a concomitant provisional referral to orthopaedics for patients who were allocated to imaging. GPs recorded patients' diagnoses, treatment plans, and their confidence in these decisions at trial entry and follow-up. Data were analysed as intention to treat. RESULTS There was no significant difference between MRI and orthopaedic groups for changes in diagnosis (P = 0.79) or treatment plans (P = 0.059). Significant changes in diagnostic and therapeutic confidence were observed for both groups with a greater increase in diagnostic confidence (P<0.001) and therapeutic confidence (P = 0.002) in the MRI group. There was a significant increase in within-group changes in diagnostic and therapeutic confidence. CONCLUSION Access to MRI did not significantly alter GPs' diagnoses or treatment plans compared with direct referral to an orthopaedic specialist, but access to MRI significantly increased their confidence in these decisions.

Abstract:This study extends the neuroendocrine role of central interleukin-1 beta (IL-1 beta) during the stress of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge to include inhibition of the somatotropic [GH-releasing hormone (GHRH)-somatostatin (SRIF)-GH] axis in juvenile male rats and clarifies the role of CRF in the mediation of LPS/IL-1-induced changes in GHRH and SRIF neurosecretion. The results of the in vivo component of this study demonstrated that LPS treatment (2.5 mg/kg twice daily for 5 days) caused a significant attenuation of body weight gain for 2 days (2.4 +/- 1.7% vs. 10.3 +/- 1.8% BW/day in saline controls; P < 0.05) and failure of catch-up growth thereafter even though a small transient suppression of food intake returned to normal by the second of 4 days of treatment. Associated with the first day of growth attenuation was an acute suppression of all plasma GH parameters, including GH mass (area under the curve, 1.972 +/- 0.1837 vs. 6.402 +/- 1.7 micrograms/ml.6 h for saline controls; P < 0.05), in animals receiving an acute bolus of LPS, which was blocked by prior microinjection of IL receptor antagonist protein (IRAP) into the third ventricle. In contrast, GH parameters associated with the second day of LPS-suppressed body weight gain were increased (GH mass, 9.4 +/- 2.2 vs. 3.5 +/- 0.5 micrograms/ml.4 h in saline controls; P < 0.05). These increases were reversed after another 2 days of LPS treatment. In a series of in vitro experiments using medial basal hypothalamic (MBH) explants incubated with LPS [100 ng/ml alone or with 10(-7) M IRAP or 10(-6) M CRF antagonist (CRF-ANT)], GHRH release from MBH incubated with LPS was significantly greater than that in controls (231 +/- 79% vs. 71 +/- 34% of baseline release; P < 0.05), and this stimulation was antagonized by both IRAP and CRF-ANT. SRIF release was significantly increased by incubation with LPS (163 +/- 28% vs. 97 +/- 20% of the baseline for controls; P < 0.05) and blocked (to 88 +/- 14% of the baseline) by IRAP, but not by CRF-ANT. Finally, when MBH explants were incubated with IL-1 beta (10(-9) M), there was a significant inhibition of in vitro GHRH release (37.9 +/- 6.7% vs. 74.9 +/- 16.6% for controls), which was reversed by IRAP and CRF-ANT, and a significant stimulation of SRIF release (168.7 +/- 37.5% vs. 98.0 +/- 11.6% for controls), which was reversed by IRAP, but not CRF-ANT.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Abstract:Phosphodiesterase9A (PDE9A) is a cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP)-specific enzyme widely expressed among the tissues, which is important in activating cGMP-dependent signaling pathways. In our previous genome-wide association study, a single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) (BTA-55340-no-rsb) located in the intron 14 of PDE9A, was found to be significantly associated with protein yield. In addition, we found that PDE9A was highly expressed in mammary gland by analyzing its mRNA expression in different tissues. The objectives of this study were to identify genetic polymorphisms of PDE9A and to determine the effects of these variants on milk production traits in dairy cattle. DNA sequencing identified 11 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and six SNPs in 5′ regulatory region were genotyped to test for the subsequent association analyses. After Bonferroni correction for multiple testing, all these identified SNPs were statistically significant for one or more milk production traits (p < 0.0001~0.0077). Interestingly, haplotype-based association analysis revealed similar effects on milk production traits (p < 0.01). In follow-up RNA expression analyses, two SNPs (c.-1376 G>A, c.-724 A>G) were involved in the regulation of gene expression. Consequently, our findings provide confirmatory evidences for associations of PDE9A variants with milk production traits and these identified SNPs may serve as genetic markers to accelerate Chinese Holstein breeding program.
Time-varying living arrangements and suicide death in the general population sample: 14-year causal survival analysis via pooled logistic regression

Abstract:Aims While past research suggested that living arrangements are associated with suicide death, no study has examined the impact of sustained living arrangements and the change in living arrangements. Also, previous survival analysis studies only reported a single hazard ratio (HR), whereas the actual HR may change over time. We aimed to address these limitations using causal inference approaches. Methods Multi-point data from a general Japanese population sample were used. Participants reported their living arrangements twice within a 5-year time interval. After that, suicide death, non-suicide death and all-cause mortality were evaluated over 14 years. We used inverse probability weighted pooled logistic regression and cumulative incidence curve, evaluating the association of time-varying living arrangements with suicide death. We also studied non-suicide death and all-cause mortality to contextualize the association. Missing data for covariates were handled using random forest imputation. Results A total of 86,749 participants were analysed, with a mean age (standard deviation) of 51.7 (7.90) at baseline. Of these, 306 died by suicide during the 14-year follow-up. Persistently living alone was associated with an increased risk of suicide death (risk difference [RD]: 1.1%, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.3–2.5%; risk ratio [RR]: 4.00, 95% CI: 1.83–7.41), non-suicide death (RD: 7.8%, 95% CI: 5.2–10.5%; RR: 1.56, 95% CI: 1.38–1.74) and all-cause mortality (RD: 8.7%, 95% CI: 6.2–11.3%; RR: 1.60, 95% CI: 1.42–1.79) at the end of the follow-up. The cumulative incidence curve showed that these associations were consistent throughout the follow-up. Across all types of mortality, the increased risk was smaller for those who started to live with someone and those who transitioned to living alone. The results remained robust in sensitivity analyses. Conclusions Individuals who persistently live alone have an increased risk of suicide death as well as non-suicide death and all-cause mortality, whereas this impact is weaker for those who change their living arrangements.

Abstract:Abstract Background Suicide is among the top 10 leading causes of premature morality in the United States and its rates continue to increase. Thus, its prevention has become a salient public health responsibility. Risk factors of suicide transcend the individual and societal level as risk can increase based on climatic variables. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the association between average temperature and suicide rates in the five most populous counties in California using mortality data from 1999 to 2019. Methods Monthly counts of death by suicide for the five counties of interest were obtained from CDC WONDER. Monthly average, maximum, and minimum temperature were obtained from nCLIMDIV for the same time period. We modelled the association of each temperature variable with suicide rate using negative binomial generalized additive models accounting for the county-specific annual trend and monthly seasonality. Results There were over 38,000 deaths by suicide in California’s five most populous counties between 1999 and 2019. An increase in average temperature of 1 °C corresponded to a 0.82% increase in suicide rate (IRR = 1.0082 per °C; 95% CI = 1.0025–1.0140). Estimated coefficients for maximum temperature (IRR = 1.0069 per °C; 95% CI = 1.0021–1.0117) and minimum temperature (IRR = 1.0088 per °C; 95% CI = 1.0023–1.0153) were similar. Conclusion This study adds to a growing body of evidence supporting a causal effect of elevated temperature on suicide. Further investigation into environmental causes of suicide, as well as the biological and societal contexts mediating these relationships, is critical for the development and implementation of new public health interventions to reduce the incidence of suicide, particularly in the face increasing temperatures due to climate change.

A Global Perspective on Religious Participation and Suicide

Abstract:Although sociological research in the Durkheimian tradition has generally accepted that religious involvement protects against suicide, few studies have examined this theoretical proposition outside Western industrialized settings. Using multilevel models to analyze data from the World Health Organization Mortality Database and the World Values Survey (1981–2007) across 42 countries in seven geographical-cultural regions, this study explores whether religious participation is more protective against suicide in some regions than others and, if so, why. Results indicate that while religious participation is protective in Latin America, eastern Europe, northern Europe, and English-speaking countries, it may aggravate the risk of suicide in East Asia, western Europe, and southern Europe. This regional variation is the result of differences in both the degree of integration/regulation of religious communities and suicide underreporting. Overall, the findings support the network perspective of Durkheim’s classical theory and suggest that researchers should be more cautious about suicide underreporting in less industrialized settings.

[Mutation analysis of the CACNL1A3 gene in Japanese hypokalemic periodic paralysis families].

Abstract:Recent genetic research has revealed that hereditary periodic paralysis is an ion channel disorder. Genetic linkage analysis has mapped the autosomal dominant hypokalemic periodic paralysis (HypoPP) locus to chromosome 1q31-32, where the dihydropyridine sensitive calcium channel alpha 1 subunit (CACNL1A3) is located. Subsequently, two predominant missense point mutations were found in the CNCNL1A3 gene. Both mutations substitute arginine to histidine (Arg528His and Arg1239His). The Arg528His mutation is characterized by incomplete penetrance in females, whereas Arg1239His is not. We analyzed Japanese hypokalemic periodic paralysis patients (familial, sporadic and thyrotoxic), and detected the Arg528His mutation in one HypoPP family. This family shows more severe symptoms in successive generations, and the severity of the symptoms is higher in males than in females within the same family.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Studies exploring suicide mortality on a global scale are sparse, and most evaluations were limited to certain populations.AIM: To assess global, regional and national trends of suicide mortality.METHODS: Suicide mortality data for the period 2000-2019 were obtained from the mortality database of the World Health Organization and the Global Burden of Disease Study. Age-standardized rates (ASRs; expressed per 100000) were presented. To assess trends of suicide mortality, joinpoint regression analysis was used: The average annual percent change (AAPC) with the corresponding 95% confidence interval (95%CI) was calculated.RESULTS: A total of 759028 (523883 male and 235145 female) suicide deaths were reported worldwide in 2019. The global ASR of mortality of suicide was 9.0/100000 population in both sexes (12.6 in males vs 5.4 in females). In both sexes, the highest rates were found in the region of Africa (ASR = 11.2), while the lowest rates were reported in Eastern Mediterranean (ASR = 6.4). Globally, from 2000 to 2019, ASRs of mortality of suicide had a decreasing tendency in both sexes together [AAPC = -2.4% per year; 95%CI: (-2.6)-(-2.3)]. The region of the Americas experienced a significant increase in suicide mortality over 2000-2019 unlike other regions that had a declining trend. Out of all 133 countries with a decline in suicide mortality, Barbados (AAPC = -10.0%), Grenada (AAPC = -8.5%), Serbia (AAPC = -7.6%), and Venezuela (AAPC = -6.2%) showed the most marked reduction in mortality rates. Out of all 26 countries with a rise in suicide mortality, Lesotho (AAPC = +6.0%), Cyprus (AAPC = +5.1%), Paraguay (AAPC = +3.0%), Saudi Arabia (AAPC = +2.8%), Brunei (AAPC = +2.6%), Greece (AAPC = +2.6%), Georgia (AAPC = +2.1%), and Mexico (AAPC = +2.0%), are among those with the highest increase in mortality.CONCLUSION: Decreasing trends in suicide mortality were observed in most countries across the world. Unfortunately, the mortality of suicide showed an increasing trend in a number of populations. Further research should explore the reasons for these unfavorable trends, in order to consider and recommend more efforts for suicide prevention in these countries.
