Abstract:Fertilized agricultural soils can be a major source of soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions to the atmosphere. Conservative soil management may have the ability to reduce N2O emissions through affecting a number of N-cycling-related soil biophysical properties. Using in situ N2O measurements combined with the techniques of quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR), amplicon sequencing, and metagenomic sequencing, we aimed to understand the effects of long-term (>10 y) conservation tillage (i.e., zero- and chisel-till vs. conventional plow-till) on soil N2O production and associated microbial guilds following inorganic N fertilizer application in maize. Between 2017 and 2019, continuous in situ measurements of N2O fluxes indicated that both zero- and chisel-till significantly lowered cumulative emissions within the growing season, compared to plow-till, mainly through shortening the duration and reducing the magnitude of post-fertilization emission events. Conservative soil management, in particular zero-till, consistently increased the Shannon diversity index of bacterial community over the growing season, compared with plow-till. High-frequency qPCR analyses further revealed a clear tillage-induced niche differentiation between nosZI- and nosZII-N2O reducers, as evidenced by the dominant gene abundance of nosZII compared to nosZI in the conservation tillage soil, which eventually probably contributed to the transformation of N2O to N2. Moreover, compared to plow-till, zero-till significantly decreased gene abundances involved in N2O production including the nirS, nirK, and narG genes, but increased abundances of N2O reduction genes such as nosZ during peak N2O emissions. Critically, the abundances of detected species involved in denitrification, such as Deltaproteobacteria_bacterium spp and Alphaproteobacteria_bacterium spp were clearly inhibited by zero-till. Overall, the reduced soil N2O emissions under reduced tillage positively and strongly depended on the nosZI-to-nosZII ratio, while increased emissions due to conventional tillage were positively associated with intensified denitrification. Such improvements in understanding of the responses of N-cycling gene abundances to tillage intensity can certainly help in the development of updated soil management practices and adaptative N application strategies to reduce reactive N emissions in agricultural ecosystems.

Abstract:Abstract As one of the important greenhouse gas, nitrous oxide (N 2 O) has attracted much attention globally under climate change context. Agricultural practices are the main sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Nevertheless, scarcity of literature is available on the effects of different tillage measures on soil N 2 O emission under spring wheat ( Triticum aestivum L. ) ecosystem in the semi-arid area of the Loess Plateau. The main objective of the experimental study was to explore the influence of conservation tillage techniques on soil physicochemical properties, nitrous oxide emission and yield in the Northern semi-arid Dingxi region of China. Four treatments viz ., conventional tillage (CT), no tillage (NT), straw mulch with conventional tillage (TS) and stubble-return with no-till (NTS) were evaluated under randomized complete block design with three replications. Our results depicted that compared with conventional tillage, bulk density and water content of topsoil was increased and soil pH value was reduced under conservation tillage techniques. Conservation tillage NT, TS and NTS increased organic carbon, TN, MBN and NH 4 + -N and reduced the accumulation of NO 3 – N. Additionally, although the N 2 O emission under NT, TS and NTS was 8.95, 41.90 and 21.05% respectively higher than under T treatment, the corresponding wheat yield was 15.40, 31.97 and 63.21% higher than T treatment. Moreover, correlation analysis showed that soil moisture and temperature were the most significant factors affecting soil N 2 O emission. The NTS treatment pointedly increased crop yield without significantly increasing soil N 2 O emission. Consequently, based on economic and environmental benefits and considering N 2 O emission and crop yield, we suggest that NTS technique is the best conservation tillage strategy in the semi-arid environmental zone of the Loess Plateau of Dingxi China.

Abstract:No-tillage cropping can increase soil carbon (C) stocks and aggregation, and subsequently impact the internal nitrogen (N) cycle and gas loss. The 15N pool dilution method was used to study gross N transformations, and relative proportions of nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions derived from denitrification versus nitrification-related processes under long-term tillage systems (no-tillage, rotary tillage and conventional tillage) in the North China Plain. In-field incubation experiments were repeated in successive growing seasons during April–November in 2007. Gross mineralization rates for rotary and mouldboard plough tillage (3.6 ± 0.3–10.6 ± 1.5 mg N kg−1 days−1) were significantly higher than for no-tillage (1.7 ± 0.8–6.8 ± 1.1 mg N kg−1 days−1). Gross mineralization was positively correlated with soil moisture and temperature, as well as with microbial biomass N and C. However, there was no consistent tillage effect on gross nitrification, and gross nitrification was positively correlated with soil moisture, but not with gross mineralization and microbial biomass. N2O emissions were higher in no-tillage (NT) than for conventional tillage (CT) during May–August. The 15N labelling indicated that 26–92 % of the N2O was directly derived from the soil ammonium (NH4+) pool. Emission rates of N2O from both nitrification and denitrification were positively correlated with NH4+ supply as expressed by gross mineralization, but not correlated with supply of nitrate as expressed by gross nitrification. The fraction of nitrified N emitted as N2O was positively correlated with changes in soil moisture and varied within 0.01–2.51 ‰. Our results showed that the tillage management impact on gross N transformation was not consistent with N2O emission, and more detailed information on the controls over N2O formation needs to be sought.

Abstract:Stover-covered no-tillage (NT) is of great significance to the rational utilization of stover resources and improvement of cultivated land quality, and also has a profound impact on ensuring groundwater, food and ecosystem security. However, the effects of tillage patterns and stover mulching on soil nitrogen turnover remain elusive. Based on the long-term conservation tillage field experiment in the mollisol area of Northeast China since 2007, the shotgun metagenomic sequencing of soils and microcosm incubation were combined with physical and chemical analyses, alkyne inhibition analysis to elucidate the regulatory mechanisms of NT and stover mulching on the farmland soil nitrogen emissions and microbial nitrogen cycling genes. Compared with conventional tillage (CT), NT stover mulching significantly reduced the emission of N 2 O instead of CO 2 , especially when 33% mulching was adopted, and correspondingly the nitrate nitrogen of NT33 was higher than that of other mulching amounts. The stover mulching was associated with higher total nitrogen, soil organic carbon and pH. The abundance of AOB (ammonia-oxidizing bacteria)- amoA (ammonia monooxygenase subunit A) was substantially increased by stover mulching, while the abundance of denitrification genes was reduced in most cases. Under alkyne inhibition, the tillage mode, treatment time, gas condition and interactions between them noticeably influenced the N 2 O emission and nitrogen transformation. In CT, NT0 (no mulching) and NT100 (full mulching), the relative contribution of AOB to N 2 O production was markedly higher than that of ammonia oxidizing archaea. Different tillage modes were associated with distinct microbial community composition, albeit NT100 was closer to CT than to NT0. Compared with CT, the co-occurrence network of microbial communities was more complex in NT0 and NT100. Our findings suggest that maintaining a low-quantity stover mulching could regulate soil nitrogen turnover toward proficiently enhancing soil health and regenerative agriculture, and coping with global climate change.

Soil CO2 Emission Reduction with No-Tillage and Medium Nitrogen Fertilizer Applications in Semi-Humid Maize Cropland in North China Plain

Abstract:To better understand the effects of tillage practices and nitrogen (N) fertilizer applications on the microbial-mediated soil CO2 emissions in the maize fields, a four-year (2018–2021) experiment was performed to compare conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT) in combination with different N rates (high N (HN) and medium N (MN) applications) on the temporal dynamics of CO2 emissions in the soil. The results showed that soil CO2 emissions were decreased by 10.3%24.5% and 18.9%31.8% under NT and MN as compared to CT and HN, respectively. The lowest and highest soil cumulative CO2 emissions occurred in the NTMN treatment (a recommended pattern) and CTHN treatment (an extensively used pattern locally), respectively. Relative to CT and HN, NT and MN increased the grain yields by 1.4%9.0% and 7.0%, respectively. NT decreased bacterial richness and alpha-diversity by 9.8% and 6.2% at the taxonomic level than CT. Meanwhile, NTMN reduced fungal diversity by 0.7%, bacterial diversity by 3.4% and bacterial richness by 0.3% compared to CTHN. NT and MN inhibited metabolic processes associated with carbon (C) cycling and enhanced C fixation pathways in prokaryotes. NTMN treatment reduced substrate availability and energy sources for fungal and bacterial activities by altering soil biochemistry, further decreasing fungal and bacterial diversity, suppressing soil CO2 emissions, and increasing yields, which were in turn enhanced by changes in soil temperature, moisture, and bulk density. This research emphasized the necessity to explore eco-friendly cropland practices in maize cultivation zones, which would contribute to the sustainable development of the agricultural sector with positive effects on reducing soil CO2 emissions and increasing crop yields. However, stability and validity need further investigation on long-term scales.
Can conservation tillage reduce N2O emissions on cropland transitioning to organic vegetable production?

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N2O) is an important greenhouse gas and a catalyst of stratospheric ozone decay. Agricultural soils are the source of 75% of anthropogenic N2O emissions globally. Recently, significant attention has been directed at examining effects of conservation tillage on carbon sequestration in agricultural systems. However, limited knowledge is available regarding how these practices impact N2O emissions, especially for organic vegetable production systems. In this context, a three-year study was conducted in a well-drained sandy loam field transitioning to organic vegetable production in the Mid-Atlantic coastal plain of USA to investigate impacts of conservation tillage [strip till (ST) and no-till (NT)] and conventional tillage (CT) [with black plastic mulch (CT-BP) and bare-ground (CT-BG)] on N2O emissions. Each year, a winter cover crop mixture (forage radish: Raphanus sativus var. longipinnatus, crimson clover: Trifolium incarnatum L., and rye: Secale cereale L.) was grown and flail-mowed in the spring. Nearly 80% of annual N2O-nitrogen (N) emissions occurred during the vegetable growing season for all treatments. Annual N2O-N emissions were greater in CT-BP than in ST and NT, and greater in CT-BG than in NT, but not different between CT-BG and CT-BP, ST and NT, or CT-BG and ST. Conventional tillage promoted N mineralization and plastic mulch increased soil temperature, which contributed to greater N2O-N fluxes. Though water filled porosity in NT was higher and correlated well with N2O-N fluxes, annual N2O-N emissions were lowest in NT suggesting a lack of substrates for nitrification and denitrification processes. Crop yield was lowest in NT in Year 1 and CT-BP in Year 3 but yield-scaled N2O-N emissions were consistently greatest in CT-BP and lowest in NT each year. Our results suggest that for coarse-textured soils in the coastal plain with winter cover crops, conservation tillage practices may reduce N2O emissions in organic vegetable production systems.
No-Tillage Improvement of Nitrogen Absorption and Utilization in a Chinese Mollisol Using 15N-Tracing Method

Abstract:To better understand the mechanism of nitrogen (N) distribution, absorption, utilization and loss in fertilizer under different tillage practices, a study was conducted to quantitatively explore the fate of fertilizer N in the soil–plant–atmosphere using the 15N labelling technique under the long-term conservation tillage experiment in Northeast China. The test crop used was corn. This study compared the residual amount of 15N fertilizer in soil, the content of 15N fertilizer N in particle organic nitrogen (PON), light fraction organic matter nitrogen (LFOMN) and heavy fraction organic matter N (HFOMN) under different tillage practices. In addition, N uptake, utilization and distribution by corn, the emission of N2O and the gas loss of fertilizer N, and the fertilizer N utilization rate were also taken into account. The results showed that no tillage (NT) had a significantly lower amount of residual 15N fertilizer than a moldboard plow (MP) (p < 0.05). In general, the content under NT at the 0–30 cm soil layer was 7.85% lower than that of MP. NT led to significantly greater PON and LFOMN of soil organic N compared to MP (p < 0.05). 15N from N uptake, fertilizer absorption and utilization under NT were significantly higher than that under MP (p leave > sheath > stem > bract > ear; about 57.91–64.92% of 15N is distributed in the grain. NT resulted in significantly lower average and cumulative N2O emissions than those from MP based on the static closed chamber approach (p < 0.05). The average and cumulative emissions of soil fertilizer 15N-N2O under MP were also significantly greater than that of NT. Among the N2O emissions, 15.3% and 22.98% came from fertilizer N under NT and MP, respectively. On average, 0.1–0.16% of fertilizer N was lost in the form of N2O. There was a significant difference in fertilizer utilization between NT and MP, and NT was 4.23% larger than MP (p < 0.05). These one year findings suggest that NT plays a positive role in improving the N absorption and utilization of fertilizer in a Chinese mollisol and long-term effects need to be further studied.

Abstract:Since the development of effective N2O mitigation options is a key challenge for future agricultural practice, we studied the interactive effect of tillage systems on fertilizer-derived N2O emissions and the abundance of microbial communities involved in N2O production and reduction. Soil samples from 0–10 cm and 10–20 cm depth of reduced tillage and ploughed plots were incubated with dairy slurry (SL) and manure compost (MC) in comparison with calcium ammonium nitrate (CAN) and an unfertilized control (ZERO) for 42 days. N2O and CO2 fluxes, ammonium, nitrate, dissolved organic C, and functional gene abundances (16S rRNA gene, nirK, nirS, nosZ, bacterial and archaeal amoA) were regularly monitored. Averaged across all soil samples, N2O emissions decreased in the order CAN and SL (CAN = 748.8 ± 206.3, SL = 489.4 ± 107.2 μg kg−1) followed by MC (284.2 ± 67.3 μg kg−1) and ZERO (29.1 ± 5.9 μg kg−1). Highest cumulative N2O emissions were found in 10–20 cm of the reduced tilled soil in CAN and SL. N2O fluxes were assigned to ammonium as source in CAN and SL and correlated positively to bacterial amoA abundances. Additionally, nosZ abundances correlated negatively to N2O fluxes in the organic fertilizer treatments. Soils showed a gradient in soil organic C, 16S rRNA, nirK, and nosZ with greater amounts in the 0–10 than 10–20 cm layer. Abundances of bacterial and archaeal amoA were higher in reduced tilled soil compared to ploughed soils. The study highlights that tillage system induced biophysicochemical stratification impacts net N2O emissions within the soil profile according to N and C species added during fertilization.

Effect of long-term compost and inorganic fertilizer application on background N2O and fertilizer-induced N2O emissions from an intensively cultivated soil

Abstract:The influence of inorganic fertilizer and compost on background nitrous oxide (N2O) and fertilizer-induced N2O emissions were examined over a maize-wheat rotation year from June 2008 to May 2009 in a fluvo-aquic soil in Henan Province of China where a field experiment had been established in 1989 to evaluate the long-term effects of manure and fertilizer on soil organic status. The study involved five treatments: compost (OM), fertilizer NPK (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium, NPK), half compost N plus half fertilizer N (HOM), fertilizer NK (NK), and control without any fertilizer (CK). The natural logarithms of the background N2O fluxes were significantly (P<0.05) correlated with soil temperature, but not with soil moisture, during the maize or wheat growing season. The 18-year application of compost alone and inorganic fertilizer not only significantly (P<0.05) increased soil organic carbon (SOC) by 152% and 10-43% (respectively), but also increased background N2O emissions by 106% and 48-76% (respectively) compared with the control. Total N in soils was a better indicator for predicting annual background N2O emission than SOC. The estimated emission factor (EF) of mineralized N, calculated by dividing annual N2O emission by mineralized N was 0.13-0.19%, significantly (P<0.05) lower than the EF of added N (0.30-0.39%). The annual N2O emission in the NPK, HOM and OM soils amended with 300 kg ha(-1) organic or inorganic N was 1427, 1325 and 1178 g N ha(-1), respectively. There was a significant (P<0.05) difference between the NPK and OM. The results of this study indicate that soil indigenous N was less efficiently converted into N2O compared with exogenous N. Increasing SOC by compost application, then partially increasing N supply to crops instead of adding inorganic N fertilizer, may be an effective measure to mitigate N2O emissions from arable soils in the North China plain.

Abstract:Reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agricultural ecosystems is vital to mitigate global warming. Conservation tillage is widely used in farmland management to improve soil quality; however, its effects on soil GHG emissions remain poorly understood, particularly in high-yield areas. Therefore, our study aimed to evaluate the effects of no-tillage (NT) combined with four straw-mulching levels (0 %, 33 %, 67 %, and 100 %) on GHG emission risk and the main influencing factors. We conducted in-situ observations of GHG emissions from soils under different management practices during the maize-growing season in Northeastern China. The results showed that NT0 (705.94 g m-2) reduced CO2 emissions by 18 % compared to ridge tillage (RT, 837.04 g m-2). Different straw mulching levels stimulated N2O emissions after rainfall, particularly under NT combined with 100 % straw mulching (2.89 kg ha-1), which was 45 % higher than that in any other treatments. The CH4 emissions flux among different treatments was nearly zero. Overall, straw mulching levels had no significant effect on the GHG emissions. During the growing season, soil NH4+-N (< 20 mg kg-1) remained low and decreased with the extension of growth stage, whereas soil NO3--N initially increased and then decreased. More importantly, the results of structural equation modeling indicate that: a) organic material input and soil moisture are key factors affecting CO2 emissions, b) nitrogen fertilizer and soil moisture promote N2O emissions, and c) climatic factors exert an inexorable influence on the GHG emissions process. Our conclusions emphasize the necessity of incorporating precipitation-response measures into farmland management to reduce the risk of GHG emissions.
Greenhouse gas emissions from the wheat-maize cropping system under different tillage and crop residue management practices in the North China Plain

Abstract:With increasing attention being placed on mitigating global warming and achieving agricultural sustainable intensification, conservation agriculture practices have gradually been implemented in the North China Plain (NCP). However, there are still knowledge gaps on the effects of conservation practices on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in this area. In this study, a four-year field experiment was conducted from 2014 to 2018 to assess the effects of tillage and crop residue management practices on the emissions of nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4). Subsequently, crop yields, area-scaled and yield-scaled total non-carbon dioxide (CO2) GHG emissions were assessed. Our research found that no-till (NT) decreased N2O emissions by 22.6% compared with conventional tillage (CT) in winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) seasons, but there was no difference between tillage practices in summer maize (Zea mays L.) seasons. Crop residue retention practice (+R) increased N2O emissions by 28.1% and 26.7% compared with residue removal practice (-R) in winter wheat and summer maize seasons, respectively. The NT soils took up more CH4 compared with the CT soils in summer maize seasons. Area-scaled total non-CO2 GHG emissions showed trends similar to those of N2O emission. Since crop residue retention improved the maize yield compared with the residue removal treatments, yield-scaled total non-CO2 GHGs emission did not differ between residue management practices in summer maize seasons. Our four-year field measurements indicated that no-till practice could be more useful as an option to mitigate non-CO2 GHG emissions in the wheat - maize cropping system.

Abstract:Stover mulching in no-tillage farming has been widely proposed as an optimized agricultural management practice to increase soil carbon storage and improve fertilizer nitrogen (N) use efficiency in current agroecosystems. However, the regulation of soil internal gross N transformation dynamics on NO 3 − -N leaching potential in response to long-term conservation tillage practices is still lacking. Here, based on a combination of 15 N-tracing incubation and in situ monitoring experiments, we investigated the effect of 9-year no-tillage and maize stover mulching on the vertical migration of fertilizer-derived NO 3 − -N into a deeper soil profile and the associated gross NO 3 − -N transformation dynamics in the Mollisol of Northeast China. The net positive NO 3 − -N production rates (varied from 3.14 to 6.22 mg N kg −1 d −1 ) were observed across all management practices in the studied Mollisol, indicating a relatively high NO 3 − -N leaching potential in the cropland of Northeast China, which was further confirmed by an average of 7.4 % fertilizer-derived NO 3 − -N being vertically transferred to the 80–100 cm soil layer after a complete maize growing period. Compared with traditional ridge tillage, long-term stover mulching in no-tillage farming significantly reduced total NO 3 − -N production by decreasing autotrophic nitrification while simultaneously enhancing total NO 3 − -N consumption by stimulating nitrate reduction and microbial NO 3 − -N immobilization, revealing a markedly reduction of net NO 3 − -N production in the no-tillage agroecosystem. Therefore, converting traditional ridge tillage toward no-tillage with maize stover mulching can effectively decrease fertilizer-derived NO 3 − -N leaching amounts and thus formulate targeted mitigation strategies for sustainable agriculture in Mollisols of Northeast China.

Abstract:Much of the global nitrous oxide emissions are derived from agricultural management driving microbial N transformations. Crop rotation, no-till, and cover cropping are feasible conservation agronomic strategies used to prevent N losses to the environment, though their effect on soil microbial N cycling at the field scale remains relatively unknown. Our goal was to determine the effect of crop rotation (continuous corn [ Zea mays L.], CCC; and continuous soybean [ Glycine max (L.) Merr.], SSS), tillage (no-till, NT; and chisel tillage, T), and cover crops (cover crop mixture, CC; and no cover crop, NCC) on the quantification of functional genes related to the N cycle from different times throughout the growing season. The study was conducted during the growing season of the cash crops following the first season of cover crops introduced after 23 years of management. Using quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) techniques, we quantified nifH (N 2 fixation), amoA (nitrification) and nirK, nirS , and nosZ (denitrification). Our results show that CCC increased nitrous oxide emissions by 44% compared to SSS and reduced soil pH by nearly 1 unit. The reduction in soil pH, coupled with an increase in fertilizer-derived ammonium, caused ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nirK copy numbers to increase. The SSS rotation showed opposite results. Bacterial denitrification via the nirK pathway was likely the N cycle mechanism behind nitrous oxide emissions in CCC. The cover crop mixture of cereal rye [ Secale cereale L.] and hairy vetch [ Vicia villosa Roth] reduced soil nitrate levels, though they did increase nitrous oxide emissions, likely due to priming and the inclusion of a legume in the cover crop mixture. Nitrous oxide emissions were affected by sampling date, crop rotation, and cover crop use, suggesting management factors that add abundantly available N alter the microbial N cycle directly or indirectly. Chisel tillage increased the abundance of all N cycle genes compared to no-till. Together, our work adds further insight into the microbial N cycle, especially nitrous oxide evolution, from three common conservation agricultural management practices, contributing to our understanding of key soil biogeochemical processes.
[Effects of Long-term Organic Amendments on Soil N2 O Emissions from Winter Wheat-maize Cropping Systems in the Guanzhong Plain].

Abstract:The primary aim of this study was to quantify the effects of long-term organic amendments on soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Using static chamber-gas chromatograph technique, we measured N2O fluxes from winter wheat-maize rotation system and related environmental factors in the Guanzhong Plain for one year (October 2014 to October 2015). Field experiments were based on the "Chinese National Loess Fertility and Fertilizer Effects Long-term Monitoring Experiment". Four treatments were control (CK, 0 kg·hm-2), NPK (NPK, 353 kg·hm-2), NPK combined with maize straw[NPKS, (353+40) kg·hm-2] and cattle waste[NPKM, (238+115) kg·hm-2]. During the experimental period, N2O fluxes from CK treatment were small[<2.9 g·(hm2·d)-1]; while emissions from fertilized treatments peaked after fertilization[up to 113.4 g·(hm2·d)-1 for NPKS] and irrigation[up to 495.0 g·(hm2·d)-1 for NPKM] during winter wheat and maize seasons, respectively. N2O flux was significantly correlated to soil water-filled pore space for all treatments (r>0.28,P<0.05). Annual N2O emissions were (0.1±0.0), (2.6±0.1), (3.4±0.7) and (2.9±0.3) kg·hm-2 for CK, NPK, NPKS and NPKM, respectively. The fertilized treatments released higher N2O emissions than CK treatment (P<0.05), indicating that fertilization stimulated N2O emissions. However, the differences in N2O emissions were not significant among the fertilized treatments (P=0.06), suggesting that organic amendments did not increase N2O emissions obviously. The direct emission factors were 0.72%, 0.83% and 0.80% for NPK, NPKS and NPKM, respectively, all of which were lower than the IPCC default of 1%. The yield-scaled N2O emission for NPKM was the lowest among the fertilized treatments.

Abstract:Conservation tillage has been recommended as one of the effective soil management practices for mitigating the negative environmental effects of synthetic ammonia application and hence achieving cleaner agricultural production. However, information about how long-term conservation tillage affects agroecosystem nitrogen balance in dryland winter wheat-summer maize cropping is limited. Based on a long-term (>9 yr) field tillage experiment and in-situ observation, we assessed the effects of different tillage practices (i.e., chisel plough tillage (CPT), zero tillage (ZT), and conventional ploughing tillage (PT)) on soil nitrogen balance and crop productivity in the 2016–2017 and 2017–2018 growing seasons. Each tillage practice was exposed to a local widely adopted N application rate (240 kg ha−1 yr−1) in both seasons. Our results indicated that, compared with PT, CPT and ZT significantly (P < 0.05) reduced N2O emissions by 39.7% (2.8 kg N ha−1 yr−1) and 55.3% (3.9 kg N ha−1 yr−1), and N leaching by 52.3% (11.8 kg N ha−1 yr −1) and 147.7% (33.3 kg N ha−1 yr−1) across the two growing seasons, respectively. CPT significantly enhanced crop aboveground N uptake by 4.0%, and increased the annual crop yield by 5.9–8.1% (0.8–1.2 t ha−1 yr−1). Although CPT and ZT enhanced NH3 volatilization by 46.7% (14.6 kg N ha−1 yr−1) and 84.3% (26.3 kg N ha−1 yr−1), the total N losses under CPT and ZT were decreased on an average by 7.4% and 22.4%, respectively. Overall, CPT and ZT significantly increased the accumulation of soil total nitrogen in the 0–100 cm layer by 34.8 and 54.1 kg N ha−1 yr−1, respectively. Taking N inputs and outputs together, CPT achieved a lower N surplus mainly due to increased crop N harvest and reduced N losses including gaseous emissions and hydrological leaching. Our findings suggest that long-term chisel plough tillage in dryland agroecosystems could serve as a promising soil management practice in increasing crop productivity and maintaining sustainability through enhancing N removal from crop biomass and decreasing N losses via N2O emission and nitrate-N leaching.

Abstract:Recent studies have shown that soil fauna can significantly affect greenhouse gas emissions. However, different functional groups and different soils can influence soil CO2 and N2O emissions to different extents. To date, little attention has been paid to whether soil fauna interactions with each other and their predators play a significant role in CO2 and N2O emissions under different tillage systems. Therefore, we studied how the interactions between soil fauna and their predators affect soil CO2 and N2O emissions from black soil following 13 years of conservation tillage (no-till) (NT) and conventional tillage (CT). We conducted a 35-day microcosm experiment with black arable soil and hay residue. The results indicated that the presence of earthworms and predator mites (EP) significantly increased the soil CO2 and N2O emissions in both NT and CT systems (P < 0.05). However, the addition of predator mites to microcosms with earthworms and Collembola treatments (ESP) did not significantly increase the soil CO2 (900.7 mg CO2-C kg−1 soil in NT, 991.0 mg CO2-C kg−1 soil in CT) or N2O (75.9 μg N2O-N kg−1 soil in NT, 79.0 μg N2O-N kg−1 soil in CT) emissions compared to earthworms and springtail (ES) treatments (CO2: 924.7 mg CO2-C kg−1 soil in NT, 914.4 mg CO2-C kg−1 soil in CT; N2O: 72.5 μg N2O-N kg−1 soil in NT, 251.4 μg N2O-N kg−1 soil in CT). Therefore, adding predators does not always increase the CO2 and N2O emissions, and the different body lengths of predators and the effect of predator-prey interactions on soil physicochemical properties should be considered. We found much higher dissolved organic carbon and nitrate availability in the E, ES and EP treatments at the time of high gas emissions on day 18, indicating that the major increase in CO2 and N2O emissions in these treatments may be due to enhanced denitrification. Our study indicates that under different tillage regimes, the interaction between soil fauna functional groups on the availability of C and N can decrease or increase soil CO2 and N2O emissions. Compared with CT soils, CO2 and N2O emissions from NT soils were lower, which demonstrates that long-term conservation tillage can reduce CO2 and N2O emissions from soil. The findings indicate that a more stable soil environment and food web with more intact functional groups are built in NT and may be more conducive to carbon and nitrogen sequestration for reducing soil CO2 and N2O emissions in the black soil region of Northeast China.

Abstract:Microscale alterations in soil physical characteristics resulting from long-term soil health practices can contribute to changes in soil nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions. In this study, we investigated soil N 2 O emissions in relation to pore characteristics influencing soil gas diffusivity under long-term tillage and cover cropping practices. Intact soil cores from tillage (conventional tillage, Conv. T versus no tillage, NT) and cover crop (hairy vetch, HV versus no cover crop, NC) treatments were used for N 2 O measurements and computed tomography (CT) scanning. Using X-ray CT technique with a resolution of 59 μm, pore structure parameters including macroporosity, number of macropores, anisotropy, fractal dimension, tortuosity, and connectivity were determined. The results showed that Conv. T and HV emitted significantly higher N 2 O than NT and NC, respectively. A similar trend was observed for macroporosity, Conv. T soils had 27.4 % higher CT-derived macroporosity than the NT soils and HV increased macroporosity by 31.1 % over the NC treatment. The number of macropores and fractal dimension were significantly higher whereas degree of anisotropy was significantly lower under HV compared to NC. In the upper 3 cm of soil, HV had a connected porosity, whereas the pores were disconnected and isolated in NC. These CT-derived properties; however, were not impacted by tillage treatments. N 2 O emissions were positively and significantly correlated to relative soil gas diffusivity, CT-derived macroporosity, number of macropores, and fractal dimension. Our results demonstrated that soil macroporosity and relative gas diffusivity could lead to improved understanding and predictability of N 2 O emissions under high soil moisture conditions.

Abstract:To evaluate the impact of N placement depth and no-till (NT) practice on the emissions of NO, N2O, CH4 and CO2 from soils, we conducted two N placement experiments in a long-term tillage experiment site in northeastern Colorado in 2004. Trace gas flux measurements were made 2–3 times per week, in zero-N fertilizer plots that were cropped continuously to corn (Zea mays L.) under conventional-till (CT) and NT. Three N placement depths, replicated four times (5, 10 and 15 cm in Exp. 1 and 0, 5 and 10 cm in Exp. 2, respectively) were used. Liquid urea–ammonium nitrate (UAN, 224 kg N ha−1) was injected to the desired depth in the CT- or NT-soils in each experiment. Mean flux rates of NO, N2O, CH4 and CO2 ranged from 3.9 to 5.2 μg N m−2 h−1, 60.5 to 92.4 μg N m−2 h−1, −0.8 to 0.5 μg C m−2 h−1, and 42.1 to 81.7 mg C m−2 h−1 in both experiments, respectively. Deep N placement (10 and 15 cm) resulted in lower NO and N2O emissions compared with shallow N placement (0 and 5 cm) while CH4 and CO2 emissions were not affected by N placement in either experiment. Compared with N placement at 5 cm, for instance, averaged N2O emissions from N placement at 10 cm were reduced by more than 50% in both experiments. Generally, NT decreased NO emission and CH4 oxidation but increased N2O emissions compared with CT irrespective of N placement depths. Total net global warming potential (GWP) for N2O, CH4 and CO2 was reduced by deep N placement only in Exp. 1 but was increased by NT in both experiments. The study results suggest that deep N placement (e.g., 10 cm) will be an effective option for reducing N oxide emissions and GWP from both fertilized CT- and NT-soils.
