Abstract:We report the fabrication of clay-mineral-based Janus microspheres that exhibit remotely steerable self-propulsion in water, facilitating their selective and active removal of radiocesium from a contaminated solution. The spray-drying of slurries of intrinsically Cs-selective illite containing iron oxide nanoparticles led to magnetic illite microspheres with superior 137Cs adsorption capability and superparamagnetic behavior. The Janus micromotor adsorbent was prepared by depositing catalytic Pt onto the half-surface of magnetic illite microspheres. The micromotor adsorbents exhibited self-propulsion at speeds as high as ~265 µm/s via asymmetric bubble generation in water containing H2O2 as a fuel. The self-propulsion of the adsorbent improved the Cs adsorption kinetics six-folds compared with the kinetics in the corresponding stationary liquid. The magnetic properties of the micromotor adsorbent enabled convenient separation and direction control of the adsorbents under an external magnetic field. In particular, the micromotor adsorbent could successfully remove more than 98.6% of 137Cs from aqueous media containing competing ions including K+, Na+, Ca2+ and Mg2+.

Abstract:Water contamination resulting from heavy metal ions (HMIs) poses a severe threat to public health and the ecosystem. Attempts are tending to develop functional materials to realize efficient and intelligent adsorption of HMIs. Herein, self-propelled structural color cylindrical micromotors (SCCMs) with reversible HMIs adsorption capacity and self-reporting property are presented. The SCCMs are fabricated by using platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) tagged responsive hydrogel of carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) and polyacrylamide (PAM) to asymmetrically replicate tubular colloidal crystal templates (TCCTs). Owing to the self-propelled motion of the SCCMs, the enhancive ion-motor interactions bring significantly improved decontamination efficiency. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the SCCMs can realize quick and naked-eye-visible self-reporting during the adsorption/desorption process based on their responsive structure color variation and superior adsorption capacity. Thus, it is anticipated that such intelligent SCCMs can significantly facilitate the evolution of sensing assays and diverse environmental fields.
Magnetic hierarchical titanium ferrocyanide for the highly efficient and selective removal of radioactive cesium from water

Abstract:Selective adsorption is the most suitable technique for eliminating trace amounts of 137Cs from various volumes of 137Cs-contaminated water, including seawater. Although various metal ferrocyanide (MFC)-functionalized magnetic adsorbents have been developed for the selective removal of 137Cs and magnetic recovery of adsorbents, their adsorption capacity for Cs remains low. Here, magnetic hierarchical titanium ferrocyanide (mh-TiFC) was synthesized for the first time for enhanced Cs adsorption. Hierarchical TiFC, comprising 2-dimensional TiFC flakes, was synthesized on SiO2-coated magnetic Fe3O4 particles using a sacrificial TiO2 shell as a source of Ti4+ via a reaction with ferrocyanide under acidic conditions. The resultant mh-TiFC exhibited the highest maximum adsorption capacity (434.8 mg g-1) and enhanced Cs selectivity with an excellent Kd value (6,850,000 mL g-1) compared to those of previously reported magnetic Cs adsorbents. This enhancement was attributed to the hierarchical structure, which reduced intracrystalline diffusion and increased the surface area available for direct Cs adsorption. Additionally, mh-TiFC (0.1 g L-1) demonstrated an excellent removal efficiency of 137Cs exceeding 99.85% for groundwater and seawater containing approximately 22 ppt 137Cs. Therefore, mh-TiFC offers promising applications for the treatment of 137Cs-contaminated water.
Facile synthesis of copper ferrocyanide-embedded magnetic hydrogel beads for the enhanced removal of cesium from water

Abstract:A simple one-step approach for fabricating copper ferrocyanide-embedded magnetic hydrogel beads (CuFC-MHBs) was designed, and the beads were applied to the effective removal of cesium (Cs) and then magnetically separated from water. The polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)-coated CuFC (PVA-CuFC) was first synthesized using PVA as a stabilizer and subsequently embedded in magnetic hydrogel beads made of a cross-linked network between the PVA and magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles that was prepared through the simple dropwise addition of a mixed solution of PVA-CuFC, PVA and iron salt into an ammonium hydroxide solution. The synthesis and chemical immobilization of the PVA-CuFC in the magnetic beads were simple, facile and achieved in one pot, and the process is scalable and convenient for the large-scale treatment of Cs-contaminated water. The resulting CuFC-MHBs showed effective Cs removal performance with a high Kd value of 66,780 mL/g and excellent structural stability without the release of CuFC for at least 1 month and could be effectively separated from water by an external magnet. Moreover, the CuFC-MHBs selectively adsorbed Cs with high Kd values in the presence of various competing ions, such as in simulated groundwater (24,500 mL/g) and seawater (8290 mL/g), and maintained their Cs absorption ability in a wide pH range from 3 to 11. The convenient fabrication method and effective removal of Cs from various aqueous media demonstrated that the CuFC-MHBs have great potential for practical application in the decontamination of Cs-contaminated water sources caused by nuclear accidents and radioactive liquid waste in various nuclear industry fields.
Magnetic Copper Hexacyanoferrate Core-shell Nanoparticles for Effective Cesium Removal from Aqueous Solution

Abstract:The commercial operation of nuclear power remains a challenge due to 137Cs contamination in the release of radioactive waste. Herein, we develop an efficient strategy of ion exchange for selective adsorption and magnetic recovery of Cs in solution based on copper hexacyanoferrate (CuHCF) deposited on Fe3O4 nanoparticles (NPs). The superparamagnetic CuHCF@Fe3O4 NPs will make it easier to be separated from solution. In addition, the diffusion of alkali ion in CuHCF lattice can be controlled by modulating the chemical valence of iron centers in CuHCF. In the reduced type, CuHCF@Fe3O4 NPs possess a high Cs adsorption capacity up to 273 mg·g-1 in 500 mg·L-1 CsCl solution. Even in the presence of alkaline ion, CuHCF@Fe3O4 NPs exhibit a high Cs selectivity of 0.2 L·mg-1 as well as a high Cs removal efficiency of 98 % in 100 g·L-1 NaCl solution. The excellent Cs removal performance of CuHCF@Fe3O4 NPs can be comparable to or even better than most of the transition-metal hexacyanoferrates reported recently. Moreover, CuHCF@Fe3O4 NPs can still maintain favorably stable with a Cs removal efficiency of 74% after 100 loops of adsorption and regeneration.

Abstract:In this work, we elucidate polymer-layered hollow Prussian blue-coated magnetic nanocomposites as an adsorbent to remove radioactive cesium from environmentally contaminated water. To do this, Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles prepared using a coprecipitation method were thickly covered with a layer of cationic polymer to attach hollow Prussian blue through a self-assembly process. The as-synthesized adsorbent was confirmed through various analytical techniques. The adsorbent showed a high surface area (166.16 m²/g) with an excellent cesium adsorbent capacity and removal efficiency of 32.8 mg/g and 99.69%, respectively. Moreover, the superparamagnetism allows effective recovery of the adsorbent using an external magnetic field after the adsorption process. Therefore, the magnetic adsorbent with a high adsorption efficiency and convenient recovery is expected to be effectively used for rapid remediation of radioactive contamination.

Abstract:The development of highly efficient adsorbents for the capture of 133 Cs and the removal of radioactive isotope 137 Cs from complex aqueous solutions is crucial for the chemical production and environmental remediation. Herein, Mo-based crystalline adsorbent with sub-nanometer (5.76 Å) channels was successfully prepared and used in electrochemically controlled Cs + separation process. Crystalline structures of MoIC (HNO 3 ) before and after adsorption of Cs + were clearly elucidated using powder X-ray diffractometer (PXRD). A more environmentally friendly electrochemical method was employed to achieve easy release and recapture of Cs + . Adsorption comparison experiments revealed that our material clearly outperforms the reported adsorbents for the removal or recovery of trace amount of Cs + (< 10 mg L −1 ). Furthermore, MoIC (HNO 3 ) also exhibited excellent selectivity for low concentration of Cs + over highly excess of competitive cations, such as Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ and K + , which are commonly distributed in brines. The maximum separation factors of Cs + /Mg 2+ , Cs + /Ca 2+ and Cs + /K + are 1.2 × 10 5 , 1.3 × 10 4 and 66, respectively. The remarkable selectivity can be attributed to the outstanding ion-sieving ability of sub-nanometer channels based on the differences in ionic radius and hydration energy of these cations. A real brine was introduced to further prove that one complete cycle of electrochemical adsorption and desorption can dramatically reduce the competing ions concentrations up to 980 times. We anticipate that our findings may give the prospect of opening up new path for the efficient separation of Cs + from brines using molybdenum-based adsorbent via electrochemically controlled process as a green and sustainable way.

Abstract:This study synthesizes a new adsorbent composite for the removal of Cs ions from waste effluents. The adsorbent is composed of polyethylene glycol-decorated ammonium molybdophosphate magnetic Fe 3 O 4 nanoparticles (PEG–AMP MNs) and is prepared via coprecipitation by grafting ammonium phosphomolybdate onto the surface of Fe 3 O 4 and coprecipitation with polyethylene glycol. The physical and chemical structure of the PEG–AMP MNs was investigated using various spectroscopic and analytical techniques, revealing that Fe 3 O 4 was tightly bound to the AMP particles and that the composites exhibited superparamagnetic behavior. The Cs + adsorption behavior of the adsorbent was investigated in a wide range of pH values and temperatures, using multiple Cs + contact times and initial Cs + concentration, and with interference from additional ionic species. The adsorbent achieved 99.8% removal of Cs + in the solution pH range of 1–12 and maintained its stability after adsorption. Interfering ions had little effect on the amount of Cs + adsorbed. The experimental data were fitted using Langmuir, Freundlich, Redlich-Peterson and Sips isotherms pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The results showed that the adsorption data fitted well with pseudo-second-order kinetics and the Langmuir isotherm model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 53.89 mg g −1 and equilibrium reached within 20 min. Thermodynamic experiments showed the adsorption process to be inherently endothermic. The mechanism of Cs + adsorption by PEG–AMP MNs is proposed to primarily be a combination of weak electrostatic attraction and ion exchange between NH 4 + and Cs + . More importantly, the encapsulation of a magnetic carrier allows for the efficient separation and recovery of Cs + after adsorption.

Abstract:Self-propelled micro/nanomotors have attracted great attention for environmental remediation, however, their use for radioactive waste detection and removal has not been addressed. Engineered micromotors that are able to combine fast detection and highly adsorptive capability are promising tools for radioactive waste management but remain challenging. Herein, we design self-propelled micromotors based on zeolite imidazolate framework (ZIF-8)-hydrogel composites via inverse emulsion polymerization and show their potential for efficient uranium detection and removal. The incorporation of magnetic ferroferric oxide nanoparticles enables the magnetic recycling and actuation of the single micromotors as well as formation of swarms of worm-like or tank-treading structure. Benefited from the enhanced motion, the micromotors show fast and high-capacity uranium adsorption (747.3 mg g<sup>-1</sup>), as well as fast uranium detection based on fluorescence quenching. DFT calculation confirms the strong binding between carboxyl groups and uranyl ions. The combination of poly(acrylic acid-co-acrylamide) with ZIF-8 greatly enhances the fluorescence of the micromotor, facilitating the high-resolution fluorescence detection. A low detection limit of 250 ppb is reached by the micromotors. Such self-propelled micromotors provide a new strategy for the design of smart materials in remediation of radioactive wastewater.

Abstract:The rapid development of nuclear energy in China has led to increased attention to the treatment of radioactive wastewaters. Herein, a novel magnetic adsorbent, magnetic Prussian blue‐molybdenum disulfide (PB/Fe 3 O 4 /MoS 2 ) nanocomposite, was prepared by a simple in-situ fixation of ferric oxide nanoparticles (Fe 3 O 4 NPs) and Prussian Blue (PB) shell layers on the surface of molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) nanosheets carrier. The prepared PB/Fe 3 O 4 /MoS 2 nanocomposites adsorbent displayed excellent fast magnetic separation and adsorption capacity of Cs + ( Q m = 80.51 mg/g) from water. The adsorption behavior of Cs + by PB/Fe 3 O 4 /MoS 2 conformed to Langmuir isothermal and second-order kinetic model, which belonged to chemical adsorption and endothermic reaction. The equilibrium adsorption capacity of PB/Fe 3 O 4 /MoS 2 to Cs + has reached 90 % in less than 110 min. Moreover, the adsorption properties of PB/Fe 3 O 4 /MoS 2 remained good in the pH range of 2–7. Based on this, PB/Fe 3 O 4 /MoS 2 complex was a fast and high selectivity adsorption material for Cs + , which was expected to be used in the practical treatment of cesium-containing radioactive wastewater.

Abstract:Self-propelled micromachines have recently attracted attention for environmental remediation, yet their use for radioactive waste management has not been addressed. Engineered micromotors that are able to combine highly adsorptive capabilities together with fast autonomous motion in liquid media are promising tools for the removal of nuclear waste, which is one of the most difficult types to manage. Herein, we fabricate self-propelled micromotors based on metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) via template-based interfacial synthesis and show their potential for efficient removal of radioactive uranium. A crucial challenge of the MOF-based motors is their stability in the presence of fuel (hydrogen peroxide) and acidic media. We have ensured their structural stability by Fe doping of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8). The implementation of magnetic ferroferric oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) and catalytic platinum nanoparticles (Pt NPs) results in the magnetically responsive and bubble-propelled micromotors. In the presence of 5 wt % H2O2, these micromotors are propelled at a high speed of ca. 860 ± 230 μm·s-1 (i.e., >60 body lengths per second), which is significantly faster than that of other microrod-based motors in the literature. These micromotors demonstrate a highly efficient removal of uranium (96%) from aqueous solution within 1 h, with the subsequent recovery under magnetic control, as well as stable recycling ability and high selectivity. Such self-propelled magnetically recoverable micromotors could find a role in the management and remediation of radioactive waste.
Simultaneous removal and separate recovery of radioactive Cs+ and I- ions from wastewater using a reusable bifunctional composite, Ni@Pt/K2NiFe(CN)6

Abstract:Radioactive Cs+ and I- ions are major components of nuclear wastewater, typically existing as counter ions. Due to their high water solubility and mobility, these ions can spread through contaminated water and soil into ecosystems, necessitating continuous removal and management. In this study, we synthesized a reusable bifunctional Ni@Pt/K2NiFe(CN)6 composite that can simultaneously remove radioactive Cs+ and I- ions and, for the first time, enable their separate recovery in aqueous solutions. In this material, K2NiFe(CN)6 acted as an electrochemically switched ion exchanger, controlling the adsorption/desorption of Cs+, while Pt enabled the spontaneous adsorption and electrochemical desorption of I-, and the magnetic Ni core allowed for efficient adsorbent recovery. The adsorption isotherms of both Cs+ and I- were best fitted using the Langmuir model, and the corresponding adsorption capacities were comparable to those of conventional adsorbents used for the separate removal of Cs+ and I-. Furthermore, the composite demonstrated stability over 100 sorption cycles, maintaining high recovery efficiencies of 97.9 % for Cs+ and 99.7 % for I-, thereby proving its reusability. Thus, the developed composite holds great promise for radioactive wastewater treatment and environmental restoration.
Multifunctional Biotemplated Micromotors for In Situ Decontamination of Antibiotics and Heavy Metals in Soil and Groundwater

Abstract:The ubiquitous pollution by antibiotics and heavy metal ions has posed great threats to human health and the ecological environment. Therefore, we developed a self-propelled tubular micromotor based on natural fibers as an active heterogeneous catalyst for antibiotic degradation and adsorbent for heavy metal ions in soil/water. The prepared micromotors can move in the presence of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) through a bubble recoil mechanism. The MnO2 NPs and MnFe2O4 NPs loaded on the hollow fibers not only enabled self-driven motion and magnetic control but also served as activators of peroxymononsulfate (PMS) and H2O2 to produce active free radicals SO4•− and •OH. Benefiting from the self-propulsion and bubble generation, the micromotors can effectively overcome the disadvantage of low diffusivity of traditional heterogeneous catalysts, achieving the degradation of more than 90% TC in soil within 30 min. Meanwhile, due to the large specific surface area, abundant active sites, and strong negative zeta potential, the micromotors can effectively adsorb heavy metal ions in the water environment. In 120 min, self-propelled micromotors removed more than 94% of lead ions, an increase of 47% compared to static micromotors, illustrating the advantages of on-the-fly capture. The prepared micromotors with excellent catalytic performance and adsorption capacity can simultaneously degrade antibiotics and adsorb heavy metal ions. Moreover, the magnetic response enabled the micromotors to be effectively separated from the system after completion of the task, avoiding the problem of secondary pollution. Overall, the proposed micromotors provide a new approach to the utilization of natural materials in environmental applications.

Abstract:A large amount of radioactive cesium (Cs) has been released into natural environment following the nuclear accident in Fukushima, Japan in 2011. Much effort has been directed at capturing Cs and remediation of the contaminated environment. However, conventional sorbents, such as Prussian blue and zeolites cannot be easily recovered once spread into an open environment. Here, we develop new nano-sorbent based on the magnetic nanoparticles (MNP) functionalized with Prussian blue (PB) that possess both high Cs adsorption capacity (96 mg Cs/g sorbent) and large distribution coefficient (3.2 × 104 mL/g at 0.5 ppm Cs concentration). The developed sorbents possess good value of saturation magnetization (20 emu/g) allowing for rapid and ease of sorbent separation from the Cs solution after treatment using magnetic field. This Cs magnetic nano-sorbent can offer high potential for the use in large scale remediation of a Cs contaminated environment as well as the possibility of novel Cs decorporation drugs that can be magnetically assisted for accelerated excretion of radiocesium from the human body.

Separation and Removal of Radionuclide Cesium from Water by Biodegradable Magnetic Prussian Blue Nanospheres

Abstract:As the main component of radioactive wastewater, the cesium ion has seriously endangered the environment and human health. Prussian blue nanoparticles (PB NPs) are used as adsorbents for the purification of cesium-containing wastewater because of their ability to selectively adsorb cesium ions. In this work, novel magnetic Prussian blue nanospheres (MPBNs) were developed from polylactic acid nanospheres as a carrier, loaded with Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) inside and PB NPs outside for the removal of cesium ions with the help of magnetic separation. Meanwhile, the effects on the adsorption efficiency of MPBNs, such as pH, time, temperature and initial concentration of cesium ion solution, were studied. The adsorption isotherms, kinetic models and adsorption thermodynamics were investigated to research the absorption mechanism. The results showed that MPBNs were spherical with a rough surface, and their particle size, iron content and saturation magnetization were 268.2 ± 1.4 nm, 40.01% and 41.71 emu/g, which can be recovered by magnetic separation. At 293 K, MPBNs could reduce the cesium ion solution from 40 mg/L to 4.8 mg/L, and its cesium ion removal rate and adsorption capacity were 82.46% and 16.49 mg/g, respectively. The optimum pH of MPBNs for cesium ion adsorption was 5~9, the adsorption equilibrium time was 60 min, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 17.03 mg/g. In addition, MPBNs were separated rapidly by an external magnetic field, and the adsorption process was an endothermic reaction. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics of MPBNs were in accordance with the Freundlich model and quasi-second-order fitting model, respectively, and the adsorption process of MPBNs was controlled by the diffusion step in particles. Notably, these MPBNs could be effectively separated from water by a magnetic field, facilitating engineering applications in cesium-containing wastewater.

Abstract:A simple one-step approach to fabricating Prussian blue-embedded magnetic hydrogel beads (PB-MHBs) was fabricated for the effective magnetic removal of radioactive cesium (137Cs) from water. Through the simple dropwise addition of a mixed aqueous solution of iron salts, commercial PB and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to an ammonium hydroxide (NH4OH) solution, the formation of hydrogel beads and the encapsulation of PB in beads were achieved in one pot through the gelation of PVA with in situ-formed iron oxide nanoparticles as the cross-linker. The obtained PB-MHBs, with 43.77 weight % of PB, were stable without releasing PB for up to 2 weeks and could be effectively separated from aqueous solutions by an external magnetic field, which is convenient for the large-scale treatment of Cs-contaminated water. Detailed Cs adsorption studies revealed that the adsorption isotherms and kinetics could be effectively described by the Langmuir isotherm model and the pseudo-second-order model, respectively. Most importantly, the PB-MHBs exhibited excellent selectivity for 137Cs in 137Cs-contaminated simulated groundwater (55 Bq/g) with a high removal efficiency (>99.5%), and the effective removal of 137Cs from real seawater by these PB-MHBs demonstrated the excellent potential of this material for practical application in the decontamination of 137Cs-contaminated seawater.

Abstract:Micro/nanomotors have attracted extensive attentions in aquatic environmental remediation, but the random motion and uncontrollability restricts the precise location and timely adjustment in micro environmental remediation, such as in microchannels and microwells. Herein, we demonstrated visible light-driven cadmium sulfide quantum dots doped cuprous oxide (Cu2O@CdSe) micromotors adsorbent with excellent removability to cationic dye, in along with effective motion regulation. The Cu2O@CdSe micromotors adsorbent with type II heterostructure was fabricated by simple in-situ deposition and exhibited outstanding motion controllability and instant response under visible light illumination. The existence of a staggered gap between Cu2O and CdSe formed a heterojunction, effectively inhibiting recombination of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and improving photocatalytic activity of Cu2O@CdSe micromotors. Negative phototactic self-propulsion with maximum speed to similar to 42.3 mu m/s was achieved in biological environments because of the formation of the asymmetric chemical concentration gradient around the motors. Additionally, by modulating the direction and on/off state of asymmetric light field, it is capable of steering motor moving with multiple controllable modes, such as horizontal, vertical, stop/go and patterned propulsion, which will facilitate the on-demand orientation once in the complex microchannel. Furthermore, the capability of Cu2O@CdSe micromotors adsorbent is confirmed with a rapid adsorption rate of 96% on methyl blue after 10 min. Additionally, the stability of micromotors is evaluated. Although with inevitable oxidation or photocorrosion for all Cu2O micromotor, the strong adsorption ability is promised with 5 times recycling in low concentration of dye solution. Such attractive micromachines with boosted motility and lower production cost hold a considerable promise for a complex environmental remediation. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Synthesis and characterization of magnetic hexacyanoferrate (II) polymeric nanocomposite for separation of cesium from radioactive waste solutions

Abstract:Nanocrystalline potassium zinc hexacyanoferrate loaded on nanoscale magnetite substrate was successfully synthesized for significantly enhanced removal of cesium from low-level radioactive wastes. A description was given for preparation and properties of these precursors. The physicochemical properties of these nanocomposites were determined using different techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). Data clarified that supporting potassium zinc hexacyanoferrates on iron ferrite nanoparticles increased their thermal stability. Further, Fourier transform infrared spectra confirmed that the nanocomposites were well coordinated and incorporated in the polymer matrix. The average particle sizes, of these nanoparticles, determined by SEM had a good agreement with XRD results. Based on characterization data, the prepared zinc hexacyanoferrates were proposed to have a zeolitic rhombohedral structure with cavities can host alkali metal ions and water molecules. The magnetic analysis showed a super-paramagnetic behavior. Batch technique was applied to evaluate the influences of initial pH value, contact time, and competing cations on the efficiency of cesium removal. The sorption process was fast initially, and maximum separation was attained within 2h of contact. Cesium exchange was independent from pH value and deviate from ideal exchange phenomena. In neutral solutions, Cs(+) was retained through exchange with K(+); however, in acidic solution, phase transformation was proposed. Sorption capacity of these materials attained values amounted 1965 mg g(-1). The synthesized nanocomposites exhibited different affinities toward Cs(I), Co(II), and Eu(III) elements and showed a good ability to separate them from each other.
