Abstract:Human finger excels at delicate and dynamic gripping tasks via coordinating soft tissues and rigid components, which is yet considerably challenging for robotic grippers. Herein, inspired by the human finger, a soft‐rigid structured gripper composed of three variable‐stiffness fingers with the antagonistic mechanism is proposed. Each finger can change its joint stiffness by selectively applying pretension to the springs so that it can exhibit different stiffness gradients to conform to the surfaces. Theoretical models are established to evaluate both the deformation and stiffness properties, and several experiments verify that it can increase the stiffness to 6.4 times after aggravating the antagonistic effect. Based on the variable stiffness, the finger performs sequential motion to conform to different curvatures, resulting in a larger contact area. Moreover, by stiffening joints, the proposed gripper can improve its grasping performance with a large grasping force while providing gentle contact. Furthermore, the gripper presents the capability of handling various objects with the optimal posture and gently grasping fragile objects like the paper ring and plasticine cylinder. Whereas this gripper can coordinate the relationship between high compliance and variable stiffness, the exploration of the gripper provides shed light on robotic design and practical application.

Abstract:This article presents the design principle and fabrication of a variable stiffness soft robotic gripper for adaptive grasping and robust holding. The proposed robotic gripper is based on a finger design that combines a fiber-reinforced soft actuator and a particle pack. The soft actuator is responsible for the bending motion of the finger, and the particle pack acts as a stiffness-changeable interface between the finger and the object. In the natural state, the particle pack is soft and adaptive to part geometry. It can rapidly stiffen (through vacuum) to resist external load or to freeze the currently bent contour of the finger. Experimental studies have shown that more than a 10-fold stiffness enhancement is achievable. Therefore, the proposed gripper is capable of handling objects with different shapes, weights, and rigidities, which have been a great challenge for robotic grasping. For more effective grasping, a grasping strategy is designed for the proposed soft gripper with simultaneous consideration of grasping adaption and robustness.

Abstract:We propose a novel tri-fingered soft robotic gripper with decoupled stiffness and shape control capability for performing adaptive grasping with minimum system complexity. The proposed soft fingers adaptively conform to object shapes facilitating the handling of objects of different types, shapes, and sizes. Each soft gripper finger has an inextensible articulable backbone and is actuated by pneumatic muscles. We derive a kinematic model of the gripper and use an empirical approach to map input pressures to stiffness and bending deformation of fingers. We use these mappings to achieve decoupled stiffness and shape control. We conduct tests to quantify the ability to hold objects as the gripper changes orientation, the ability to maintain the grasping status as the gripper moves, and the amount of force required to release the object from the gripped fingers, respectively. The results validate the proposed gripper's performance and show how stiffness control can improve the grasping quality.

Abstract:In most applications that involve human-robot interactions, compliant actuators with variable stiffness can be used to improve fast and safe motion for robots. The bio-inspired agonist-antagonistic setup of variable stiffness actuator (VSA) systems enable online compliance adaptation through co-contraction of actuator pairs. However, the promise of these platforms is limited by the difficulty of control. In this paper, we develop a sliding mode variable stiffness controller for a soft rehabilitation robot actuated by an antagonistic pair of McKibben muscles. To demonstrate the stability of this controller, the robotic control system is analyzed using the Lyapunov method. Finally, several simulations are conducted on the robot, and the results show that the proposed controller has good tracking performance and robustness.

Abstract:Variable Stiffness Grippers (VSGs) represent a groundbreaking advancement in robotic manipulation, embodying the seamless integration of flexibility and rigidity to meet the multifaceted challenges of modern automation. These devices leverage the adaptability of compliant modes for handling a wide range of objects yet can switch to a rigid mode for tasks requiring high strength and precision. The management of variable stiffness poses significant challenges, especially in achieving precise control over the gripper's adaptability to objects of varying compliance. This paper proposes a method to provide a combination of position control and force control of a VSG by exploiting the dynamic model and the different stiffness levels. Our research examines active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) and deterministic robust control (DRC), demonstrating their advantages over PID in managing stiffness variations in robotic grippers. We highlight ADRC and DRC's enhanced robustness and adaptability through a comparative analysis, at different stiffness levels and grasping processes. These efforts highlight the importance of sophisticated control systems, in distinguishing between stiff and rigid modes effectively, enabling VSGs to handle objects ranging from fragile.

Abstract:This paper proposes a new variable stiffness soft gripper that enables high-performance grasping tasks in industrial applications. The design of the proposed monolithic soft gripper includes a middle bellow and two side bellows (i.e., fingers). The positions of the fingers are regulated by adjusting the negative pressure in the middle bellow actuator via an on-off controller. The stiffness of the soft gripper is modulated by controlling the positive pressure in the fingers through the use of a proportional air-pressure regulator. It is experimentally shown that the proposed soft gripper can modulate its stiffness by 125% within 250ms. It is also shown that the variable stiffness soft gripper can help improve the safety and performance of grasping tasks in industrial applications.

Abstract:Traditional robots with constant stiffness demonstrate reliable output power and positioning precision, which may conversely reduce their flexibility and adaptability or even incur greater damage for accidental collisions with the environment or humans. Here, we review state-of-the-art robots with a variable stiffness mechanism, which is a key design concept that is widely used to improve robot reliability and impart new functionalities. To determine the similarities and differences between variable stiffness methods, we discuss the existing principles for variable stiffness of both rigid and soft robots, such as coupled and uncouple structures, thermal stimuli and magneto-rheological approaches. We hope this paper can help readers better understand these methods with regard to interesting applications. In addition, we also outline challenges and perspectives, where a simpler structure, larger band and faster response of stiffness modulation are required for robots in the future.

Stiffness-Tunable Soft Gripper with Soft-Rigid Hybrid Actuation for Versatile Manipulations

Abstract:Highly flexible and environmentally adaptive soft robots have received considerable attention. There remains a demand for soft robots to realize the stiffness modulation and variable workspace for robust and versatile manipulations. This article presents a compact soft gripper with a polylactic acid-based variable stiffness module (VSM) and a rigid retractable mechanism to achieve soft-rigid hybrid actuation. The soft gripper can enhance its stiffness by 18-fold without sacrificing flexibility due to the VSM. A heating circuit is designed to divide the VSM into three regions. Each region can be activated separately for varying flexible segments to amplify the dexterity. Meanwhile, the water-cooling system accelerates the heat exchange, thus reducing the cooling time from ∼400 to 39 s. The rigid retractable mechanism can adjust the initial layout of the gripper to expand the workspace and perform manipulation by opening and closing fingers. The soft finger combined with stiffness tunability can maintain its deformation after being stiffened to realize morphing. Therefore, it can efficiently perform a grasp with a high load and avoid repeated heating and cooling, especially for items with a similar shape. The performance of the gripper is further validated by measuring the grasping force and grasping demonstration with various objects, showing its robustness and dexterity in versatile tasks.

Abstract:Variable stiffness soft robots feature low stiffness during deformation and high stiffness during operation, making them versatile for various tasks. In this study, we propose a mortise-tenon inspired variable stiffness mechanism (VSM) capable of continuously regulating the structural stiffness within a wide range. The relationship between the structural stiffness of the VSM and the pneumatic pressure applied to a driving airbag was theoretically modeled and experimentally verified. A soft-rigid hybrid finger, integrating soft actuators and the VSM, was developed to explore its deformation capabilities through numerical simulations and experimental tests. Furthermore, a four-fingered hand prototype was assembled, and its grasping performance was systematically evaluated. The results demonstrated that the four-fingered hand could actively switch grasping modes by leveraging the variable stiffness of the VSM, exhibiting exceptional adaptability to various shapes and loads. The variable stiffness mechanism proposed in this study provides new technological support for the design of reprogrammable stiffness soft robots, significantly enhancing their adaptability.
A Variable Stiffness Gripper with Reconfigurable Finger Joint for Versatile Manipulations

Abstract:A reconfigurable dexterous gripper is designed which can switch states, including rigidity and flexibility, for different application scenarios. Moreover, the stiffness of the fingers in the flexible state can also be tuned for different objects. Three fingers are connected to the revolute joints of the palm, and each finger has a reshape mechanism with a slider moving up and down to lock or release the fingertip joint. When the slider moves upward, the gripper works in the rigid state and the fingers are actuated by the servos. When the slider moves downward, the gripper works in the flexible state that the fingertip is supported by a spring, and the fingertip joint is rotated by an embedded motor with two group cables for tuning stiffness. This novel design provides the gripper with the advantages of high precision and strong load capacity of rigid grippers and shape adaptability and safety of soft grippers. The reconfigurable mechanism allows the gripper great versatility for grasping and manipulation, which facilitates the planning and execution of the motion of objects with different shapes and stiffness. We discuss the stiffness-tunable mechanism with different states, analyze the kinematic characteristics, and test the manipulator performance to investigate the application in rigid-flexible collaborative works. Experimental results show the practicability of this gripper under different requirements and the rationality of this proposed concept.

Abstract:In recent times, the soft robotics field has been attracting significant research focus owing to its high level of manipulation capabilities unlike traditional rigid robots, which gives room for increasing use in other areas. However, compared to traditional rigid gripper robots, being capable of controlling/obtaining overall body stiffness when required is yet to be further explored since soft gripper robots have inherently less-rigid properties. Unlike previous designs with very complex variable-stiffness systems, this paper demonstrates a soft gripper design with minimum system complexity while being capable of varying the stiffness of a continuum soft robotic actuator and proves to have potential applications in gripping objects of various shapes, weights, and sizes. The soft gripper actuator comprises two separate mechanisms: the pneumatic mechanism for bending control and the mechanical structure for stiffness variation by pulling tendons using stepper motors which compresses the actuator, thereby changing the overall stiffness. The pneumatic mechanism was first fabricated and then embedded into another silicon layer during which it was also merged with the mechanical structure for stiffness control. By first pneumatically actuating the actuator which causes bending and then pulling the tendons, we found out that the actuator stiffness value can be increased up to 145% its initial value, and the gripper can grasp and lift a weight of up to 2.075 kg.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel variable stiffness soft gripper based on the principle of air-quicksand to enhance both the grasping stability and load-bearing capacity. The design, fabrication, and testing experiments of the soft grippers were performed. The soft finger is composed of a variable stiffness layer and a pneumatically driven layer with variable height chambers. The concept behind the variable stiffness layer lies in the fact that when the chamber is filled with air, it forms a suspended quicksand configuration through laminar flow and turbulence. This arrangement increases the spacing between sand particles, leading to reduced friction. Moreover, the stiffness and hardness of the soft finger can be controlled by adjusting the pressure. To improve the grasping stability, the variable height chambers were designed to provide power, which also increased the contact area. Experimental results demonstrate that the variable stiffness layer can be softened when in contact with fragile objects, thus protecting the surface without causing any damage. The stiffness increases to provide sufficient grasping force for holding objects firmly after the inflation is stopped. The exceptional performance exhibited by this gripper design holds significant potential for various applications, such as industrial sorting and fruit picking.

Abstract:Despite good performance in grasping irregular fragile objects, soft grippers exhibiting low stiffness, and carrying capacity lack multidirectional grasping ability in the case of inclination. To address this problem, we propose a novel rigid and soft coupling variable stiffness module that employs a folded plate mechanism (FPM) to provide rigid multidirectional loading and combines it with particle jamming to achieve local variable stiffness with the characteristics of a finger grasping structure. Hence, a variable stiffness multidirectional soft grasping robot is developed to realize soft grasping and multidirectional rigid loading. The bending and stiffness control of the variable stiffness soft gripper is realized by a double-layer pneumatic driving structure with the advantages of simple control and corresponding speed. Moreover, good self-recovery is achieved with the soft outer layer since the particles can quickly return to the initial state due to partitioning of the FPM. Finally, prototype experiments verify its strong adaptability and stable multidirectional grasping ability, and experimental results show that the maximum grasping weight in each direction can be increased by more than three times with the variable stiffness.

Abstract:<p>Soft robotic manipulators are continuum robots made of soft materials and flexible components. The goal of soft robotic manipulators research is to enable these manipulators to adapt their shapes to cluttered environments and to have safer interactions with human. However, there is still a problem with effectively using soft robotic manipulators in practical applications. The challenges of soft robotic manipulators in terms of materials and structure design, stiffness control, perception, and function control remain to be overcome. Here, an overview of recent advances in this field is presented, covering device architectures, actuation, variable stiffness, and sensing. Actuator technologies are discussed and roughly divided into three categories: a) tendon-driven actuation, b) fluidic actuation, and c) stimuli-responsive actuation, which is based on smart materials. Considering the working principle of stiffness variation technologies, stiffness variation technologies can be divided into two categories: a) using the interactions between structural elements, b) direct material rigidity tuning strategies. A briefly review of soft sensing technologies is presented. From the functional perspective, sensor technologies are divide into two categories: proprioception and exteroception. A conception for designing soft robotic manipulators is proposed from the perspective of soft robotic manipulator applications. Finally, the challenges this field faces are discussed.</p>

Abstract:Versatile and secure grasping in robotic systems remains a difficult challenge to address when objects possess a wide range of different properties (size, weight, friction coefficient, etc.). The human hand is often the primary source of inspiration for many technologies addressing this challenge, and a notable feature of our hands is that they can vary their stiffness to match the requirements of the task, e.g., become stiffer or more compliant depending on specific requirements. Many robotic devices have been proposed in the literature mirroring this capability, either using an adjustable internal tension mechanism similar to what happens with human tendons or another physical phenomenon yielding the same effect. This article proposes a new type of soft robotic fingers using a novel method to produce a variable stiffness achieved by modifying the kinematic structure of the fingers using snap-fit joints, a very simple alternative to most variable stiffness mechanisms. The resulting modification of the geometry and kinematics of the fingers, including their number of degrees of freedom, allows to greatly alter the intrinsic stiffness of the grasp produced by these fingers. A notable feature of the proposed new design is that one pair of fingers can be used to switch the stiffness of another pair if a dual arm robot is used.

Abstract:Purpose Variable stiffness structure can significantly improve the interactive capabilities of grippers. Shape memory alloys have become a popular option for materials with variable stiffness structures. However, its variable stiffness range is limited by its stiffness in two phases. The purpose of this paper is to enhance the manipulation capabilities of tendon-driven flexible grippers by designing a wide-range variable stiffness structure. Design/methodology/approach Constitutive models of shape memory alloy and mechanical models are used to analyze the performance of the variable stiffness structure. A separated solution was used to combine the tendon-driven gripper and the variable stiffness structure. The feed-forward control algorithm is used to enhance the control stability of the variable stiffness structure. Findings The stiffness variable capability of the proposed variable stiffness structure is verified by experiments. The stability of the feedback control algorithm was verified by sinusoidal tracking experiments. The variable stiffness range of 8.41 times of the flexible gripper was tested experimentally. The interaction capability of the variable stiffness flexible gripper is verified by the object grasping experiments. Originality/value A new wide-range variable stiffness structure is proposed and validated. The new variable stiffness structure has a larger range of stiffness variation and better control stability. The new flexible structure can be applied to conventional grippers to help them gain stiffness variable capability and improve their interaction ability.

Abstract:Soft grippers are a novel kind of front-end actuators for robotics that offer great benefits such as easy control, superior grabbing capability, and close contact with the environment. They have vast application possibilities in numerous industries such as agricultural picking, item sorting, and medical rehabilitation. In this paper, a soft gripper with a variable structure and electrostatic adsorption is proposed. The gripper includes three fingers uniformly dispersed in the shape of a circle, which can adapt to varying sizes of grabbing objects by dynamically modifying the opening angle of the fingers. Aimed at addressing the existing issue of lacking multi fingers soft pneumatic grippers in grabbing tiny flat items, it is enhanced by embedding an electroadhesion films (EAFs) at the bottom of the soft pneumatic fingers (SPFs) of the gripper. It is simulated that the diameter adjustment range of this gripper is 0-482mm, and the angle adjustment range is 0-180° via ABAQUS simulation. Finally, the adaptive grabbing capacity of the soft gripper was validated via experiments. The trials reveal that the gripper can grab items of different sizes by altering the opening angle of the fingers and the maximum load of the gripper can reach 10.91N during specific grasping operations. The findings confirm that the soft pneumatic grippers (SPGs) with variable structure and electroadhesion (EA) described in this paper has a high gripping range and the capacity to grab thin flat items. We believe that its excellent gripping performance will encourage different uses of this gripper in everyday life and industry.

Abstract:Grasping is a key task for robots to interact with humans and the environment. Soft grippers have been widely studied and some have been applied in industry and daily life. Typical soft grippers face two challenges: lack of stiffness and insufficient adaptability to various objects. Inspired by the human hand, this paper proposes a soft-rigid hybrid pneumatic gripper composed of fingers with soft skin and rigid endoskeletons, and an active palm. Through different combinations of the four joints’ locking states within the rigid endoskeleton, each finger obtains 9 different postures in its inflating state and 13 different postures in its deflating state, endowing the gripper with the capability of adapting to a wider variety of objects. Simultaneously, due to the endoskeletons, the lateral stiffness of the gripper is significantly enhanced (load-to-weight ratio∼7.5 for lateral grasping). We also propose a series of grasping strategies for grasping objects with different sizes and shapes to utilize the versatile configurations of the gripper. Experiments demonstrated that the gripper conformed well to the surfaces of cylindrical and prismatic objects and successfully grasped all tool items and shape items in the Yale–CMU–Berkeley object set.

Abstract:Abstract The robotic hand plays an extremely significant role in completing various robotic tasks, especially for a robot to complete different grasping tasks. In this paper, we propose a novel multi-fingered bionic hand with variable stiffness for robotic grasp. First, based on the analysis of the human hand, we design the modular finger with variable stiffness mechanism and the flexible thumb with dual-link independent mechanism. Second, the multi-fingered bionic hand composed of three modular fingers and one flexible thumb is presented, which possesses 14 degrees-of-freedom (DoFs). Then, the parameters of the designed hand are analyzed to obtain the stiffness characteristics and working space. Furthermore, the grasping control method based on position control and force control is proposed for robotic grasp. Finally, a series of experiments are designed to verify the effectiveness of the designed hand and the proposed method. The experimental results show that (1) the designed variable stiffness mechanism can be used to adjust the stiffness of hand fingers, (2) the proposed method can effectively control the grasping force under different stiffness conditions, and (3) the designed hand can successfully grasp different types of objects by various grasping strategies.

Abstract:Rigid robotic grippers are not capable of self-adjusting their grip size based on any real-time changes in the dimensions of the target object. This problem of self-adjustment can be addressed by soft robotic grippers. In the past few decades, new methods, and techniques to develop and control soft actuators have been explored by researchers worldwide. Soft robotic grippers can be categorized into three technologies which are controlled actuation, controlled adhesion, and controlled stiffness. Using these three technologies soft robots can mimic the morphology of the gripping and locomotion mechanisms of various animals. This study is aimed to present an introductory review for researchers who want to explore the field of soft robotics. While previous reports focussed on granular jamming structures to control stiffness, the present study emphasized laminar jamming structures and discussed the recent soft actuators developed using these structures. It was observed that soft actuators with a longitudinal strain like mckibben and peano HASEL exert high forces compared to bending actuators. Also, sandwiched laminar jammers can generate greater stiffness compared to homogeneous laminar jammers.
