Abstract:Renewable energy systems, particularly in countries with limited fossil fuel resources, are promising and environmentally sustainable sources of electricity generation. Wind, solar Photovoltaic (PV), and biomass gasifier-based systems have gotten much attention recently for providing electricity to energy-deficient areas. However, due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy, a completely renewable system is unreliable and may cause operation problems. Energy storage systems and volatile generation sources are the best way to combat the problem. This paper proposes a hybrid grid-connected wind-solar PV generation Microgrid (MG) with biomass and energy storage devices to meet the entire value of load demand for the adopted buildings in an intended region and ensure economic dispatch as well as make a trade in the electricity field by supplying/receiving energy to/from the utility grid. The control operation plan uses battery storage units to compensate energy gap if the priority resources (wind turbine and solar PV) are incapable of meeting demand. Additionally, the biomass gasifier is used as a fallback option if the batteries fail to perform their duty. At any time, any excess of energy can be utilized to charge the batteries and sell the rest to the utility. Additionally, if the adopted resources are insufficient to meet the demand, the required energy is acquired from the utility. A Hybrid Grey Wolf with Cuckoo Search Optimization (GWCSO) algorithm is adopted for achieving optimal sizing of the proposed grid-connected MG. To assess the proposed technique's robustness, the results are compared to those obtained using the Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm. The GWCSO method yielded a lower total number of component units, annual cost, total Net Present Cost (NPC), and Levelized Cost Of Energy (LCOE) than the GWO algorithm, whereas the GWCSO algorithm has the lowest deviation, indicating that it is more accurate and robust than the GWO algorithm.

Abstract:Microgrids are a promising solution for decentralized energy generation and distribution, offering reliability, efficiency, and resilience. These small-scale power systems can operate independently or connect to the main grid, providing greater reliability and resilience. However, integrating renewable energy into microgrids presents challenges due to their unpredictable nature and fluctuating load of electricity. Energy management strategies play a crucial role in optimizing the operation of microgrids, aiming to balance electricity supply and demand, maximize renewable energy utilization, and minimize operational costs. Various approaches have been proposed for energy management in microgrids, including optimization algorithms, machine learning techniques, and intelligent control systems. This study proposes an optimized and efficient strategy for microgrids operating in both independent and grid-connected modes, focusing on microgrids that utilize a combination of solar and green energy sources. The proposed approach, based on the Promoted Remora Optimization (PRO) algorithm, aims to meet load power requirements at the lowest possible cost while ensuring constant DC bus voltage and safeguarding batteries against overcharging and depletion. The CRO method effectively optimized the charging process, maintaining a consistent level of charge and achieving a final SoC of 33.37 %-33.60 %. It also demonstrated high system efficiency, with an average of 87.99 %, and a range of 87.80 %-88.03 %. The optimizer efficiency ranged from 83.12 % to 86.52 %, with an average of 86.46 %. The CRO method also achieved reasonable operating costs, with a cost per power of $0.1687/kW to $0.1699/kW and a daily cost of $1,379,595 to $1,479,998. Overall, the CRO method showed promise in optimizing the charging process in terms of efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Comparative analysis with existing literature is conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach, demonstrating its superior results compared to other energy management strategies for microgrids. This study contributes to the field of microgrid energy management by providing a novel approach based on the PRO algorithm and demonstrating its effectiveness through comparative analysis.

Abstract:The growing presence of EVs in regional microgrids introduces increased variability and uncertainty in the areas’ load profiles. This paper presents a novel approach for optimizing energy and reserve minimization in a sustainable integrated microgrid with electric vehicles (EVs) by the use of the dynamic and adjustable Manta Ray Foraging (DAMRF) algorithm. The DAMRF algorithm harnesses the inherent flexibility of EVs as controllable loads and develops a comprehensive dispatch model for a large-scale EV response. The model takes into account the management, operational, and environmental costs associated with load fluctuations in the microgrid. Simulation evaluations conducted based on a practical microgrid environment validate the effectiveness of our wind–solar energy storage and management strategy. The results showcase significant improvements in energy and reserve minimization, highlighting the potential advantages of integrating EVs into sustainable microgrid systems. In addition, the DAMRF algorithm achieves lower environmental pollution control costs (USD 8000) compared to the costs associated with the Genetic Algorithm (GA) (USD 8654.639) and PSO (USD 8579.546), emphasizing its ability to effectively control and minimize environmental pollution. In addition, the DAMRF algorithm offers a more cost-effective solution for managing the power grid, and the shorter solution running time of the DAMRF is almost the same as PSO’s quicker decision-making and response times, enhancing the overall responsiveness and adaptability of the power grid management system.

Abstract:At present, renewable energy sources (RESs) and electric vehicles (EVs) are presented as viable solutions to reduce operation costs and lessen the negative environmental effects of microgrids (μGs). Thus, the rising demand for EV charging and storage systems coupled with the growing penetration of various RESs has generated new obstacles to the efficient operation and administration of these μGs. In this regard, this paper introduces a multi-objective optimization model for minimizing the total operation cost of the μG and its emissions, considering the effect of battery storage system (BSS) and EV charging station load. A day-ahead scheduling model is proposed for optimal energy management (EM) of the μG investigated, which comprises photovoltaics (PVs), fuel cells (FCs), wind turbines (WTs), BSSs, and EV charging stations, with shed light on the viability and benefits of connecting BSS with EV charging stations in the μG. Analyzing three case studies depending on the objective function-Case 1: execute EM to minimize total operation cost and maximize the profits of BSS, Case 2: execute EM to minimize total emission from the μG, and Case 3: execute EM to minimize total operation cost, maximize the profits of BSS, and minimize total emissions from the μG. The main aim of the presented optimization strategy is to achieve the best possible balance between reducing expenses and lessening the environmental impact of greenhouse gas emissions. The krill herd algorithm (KHA) is used to find the optimal solutions while considering various nonlinear constraints. To demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed solution, the study utilizes the KHA and compares the obtained results with those achieved by other optimization methods. It was demonstrated that such integration significantly enhances the μG's operational efficiency, reduces operating costs, and minimizes environmental impact. The findings underscore the viability of combining EV charging infrastructure with renewable energy to meet the increasing energy demand sustainably. The novelty of this work lies in its multi-objective optimization approach, the integration of EV charging and BSS in μGs, the comparison with other optimization methods, and the emphasis on sustainability and addressing energy demand through the utilization of renewable energy and EVs.

Abstract:Energy &Environment, Ahead of Print. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) are playing an increasingly important role in modern transportation systems, as a result of the ecological crisis and the energy crisis. The enormous potential of the storage capacity of the large fleet of PHEVs, together with the flexibility they can offer power systems through effective control, cannot be ignored. Meanwhile, renewable energy sources (RESs) present significant challenges for energy management scheduling. This article analyzes a microgrid comprising several RESs, such as photovoltaics, fuel cells, wind turbines, microturbines, a battery as energy storage, and PHEVs. Monte Carlo simulation is used to address uncertainties in model development. To account for possible inaccuracies in PHEV charging predictions, electrical load consumption, hourly energy price fluctuations, and RES power output, the study uses a 24-h simulation. Furthermore, a nickel metal hydride battery is used in the microgrid to evaluate the operational impact of different storage systems. The optimization aims to minimize the total cost of the network, including the cost of load supply, the cost of PHEV charging demands, and the cost of power losses. The complexity of the problem requires a novel optimization technique, in this case, the modified manta ray foraging optimization algorithm, which provides a comprehensive global search of the entire search space. Numerical results reveal that the modified manta ray foraging optimization technique demonstrates favorable convergence properties and lower generation costs compared to the classical manta ray foraging optimization method and other recent optimization algorithms.

Abstract:Hydrogen energy storage systems (HESS) play an essential role in Microgrid (MG) systems to address the inherent generation characteristics of renewable energy sources. Also, the integration of Demand Response (DR) into the Energy Management System (EMS) of a renewable-based Multi-Microgrid (MMG) can lead to substantial technical and economic benefits. This paper proposes a modified optimization algorithm for optimizing MMG Energy Management (EM). The proposed algorithm is a modified version of the Student Psychology-Based Optimization (SPBO) technique called Modified Student Psychology-Based Optimization (MSPBO). This modification aims to improve issues such as slow convergence, low solution accuracy, lack of diversity, and getting stuck in local optima. The proposed MSPBO method incorporates a local escape operator and a collaborative student class to achieve a better balance between exploiting known solutions and exploring new possibilities. The MSPBO algorithm is applied to address the EM challenge within a MMG context. Considering the integration of renewable sources as Wind turbines and solar photovoltaic and the HESS, the EM problem is formulated as a two-stage multi-objective optimization: minimizing the operating cost of conventional generators and power transactions cost in addition to the cost of HESS, while maximizing operator benefits and peak load reduction. This multi-objective problem is tackled using a hybrid ε-lexicography–weighted-sum approach that avoids the need for normalization. The performance of the proposed MSPBO is evaluated using CEC 2017 benchmark test functions, utilizing various statistical measures such as best, average, worst, rank, and standard deviation (SD) of fitness values, along with Wilcoxon's rank-sum test. The MSPBO technique is compared with other optimization algorithms for these test functions, highlighting its efficiency and adeptness in achieving a harmonious trade-off between exploiting known solutions and exploring new ones. Furthermore, the MSPBO method is applied to solve two case studies. In Case 1, which involves a single stage with conventional demand response optimization, the results achieved using MSPBO are benchmarked against other optimization techniques, revealing its superior efficacy in addressing the EM challenge. In Case 2, a more complex two-stage multi-objective problem is tackled using MSPBO, and the assessment of the integration of HESS in the MMG is evaluated. In the second stage, there is a notable enhancement in peak load reduction percentage (PRP), from 13.9% to 16.13% without the HESS and from 12.68% to 16.46% with the integration of HESS.

Abstract:Improving energy efficiency, production costs, greenhouse gas emissions, and reliability are some of the most important problems in the energy industry. Energy storage systems and demand-side management (DSM) programs are among the existing solutions for removing such problems. This study presents an improved micro energy grid (MEG) to reduce operating costs as well as greenhouse gas emissions using combined cooling, heating, and power (CCHP) systems, wind turbines (WTs), photovoltaic (PV) units, pumped-storage units, and heating and cooling storage units. In this system, pumped-storage units are employed to store energy. Price- and incentive-based programs are employed to obtain better performance on the demand side. Uncertainties of wind speed, solar power, electricity price, and electrical load are considered to achieve more accurate results. In this paper, the Latin hypercube sampling (LHS) method is applied to generate various scenarios. Then, K-means clustering approach is employed to reduce the number of scenarios. By producing and reducing the proposed scenario, the inherent uncertainty in renewables can be covered, which will result in a more efficient model. Meta-heuristic whale optimization algorithm (WOA) and Pareto model are used to solve single- and multi-objective functions and to optimally design the proposed structure considering contradictory functions, respectively. The features of the proposed developed algorithm are simplicity in execution and absence of derivative operator, increase of local and global search capability and consideration of objective functions with different nature. Moreover, fuzzy decision-making mechanism is proposed to select the optimal solution from the Pareto set of solutions. Finally, the proposed approach in different scenarios on the microgrid with various sources is discussed. The results indicate the proposed method properly obtains the optimal solution.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel model for optimizing microgrid systems by integrating multi-purpose renewable energy (MEM) and cutting-edge technologies, including electric vehicles (EVs). The proposed MEM demand response programs encompass various energy sources such as wind energy, multi-carrier energy storage technologies, boilers, combined heat and cooling units, EVs, P2G (power-to-gas), and demand response capabilities. The primary objective is to minimize the total operational cost of the microgrid system. A distinctive aspect of the proposed method lies in considering the prices of all energy carriers as unknown variables. Market prices are integrated into the modeling process, incorporating scenarios with reasonable probabilities and taking into account demand-side management programs. Moreover, the model allows for customizable programming of different parts of the multi-energy microgrids, with a focus on maintaining convexity principles for the operating area of each CHP (combined heat and power) unit. To tackle the unique complexity of this optimization problem, a developed blue whale optimization algorithm is proposed. This algorithm builds upon the main whale optimization algorithm (WOA), a promising population-based optimization approach. However, the effectiveness of WOA heavily relies on the careful setting of exploration and exploitation parameters, which may lead to being trapped in local optima. To address this challenge, the paper introduces a self-adaptation modification based on wavelet theory to enhance the WOA's performance. The proposed model and optimization method are thoroughly evaluated through simulation studies for different scenarios, showcasing their efficacy in achieving cost-efficient and sustainable microgrid operation. The combination of MEM and emerging technologies like EVs, along with the improved optimization algorithm, marks a significant contribution to advancing the planning and operation of microgrid systems towards low-cost, reliable, and environmentally-friendly energy solutions.

Abstract:In this study, a fuzzy multi-objective framework is performed for optimization of a hybrid microgrid (HMG) including photovoltaic (PV) and wind energy sources linked with battery energy storage (PV/WT/BES) in a 33-bus distribution network to minimize the cost of energy losses, minimizing the voltage oscillations as well as power purchased minimization from the HMG incorporated forecasted data. The variables are microgrid optimal location and capacity of the HMG components in the network which are determined through a multi-objective improved Kepler optimization algorithm (MOIKOA) modeled by Kepler's laws of planetary motion, piecewise linear chaotic map and using the FDMT. In this study, a machine learning approach using a multilayer perceptron artificial neural network (MLP-ANN) has been used to forecast solar radiation, wind speed, temperature, and load data. The optimization problem is implemented in three optimization scenarios based on real and forecasted data as well as the investigation of the battery's depth of discharge in the HMG optimization in the distribution network and its effects on the different objectives. The results including energy losses, voltage deviations, and purchased power from the HMG have been presented. Also, the MOIKOA superior capability is validated in comparison with the multi-objective conventional Kepler optimization algorithm, multi-objective particle swarm optimization, and multi-objective genetic algorithm in problem-solving. The findings are cleared that microgrid multi-objective optimization in the distribution network considering forecasted data based on the MLP-ANN causes an increase of 3.50%, 2.33%, and 1.98%, respectively, in annual energy losses, voltage deviation, and the purchased power cost from the HMG compared to the real data-based optimization. Also, the outcomes proved that increasing the battery depth of discharge causes the BES to have more participation in the HMG effectiveness on the distribution network objectives and affects the network energy losses and voltage deviation reduction.

Abstract:Within microgrids (MGs), the integration of renewable energy resources (RERs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), combined heat and power (CHP) systems, demand response (DR) initiatives, and energy storage solutions poses intricate scheduling challenges. Coordinating these diverse components is pivotal for optimizing MG performance. This study presents an innovative stochastic framework to streamline energy management in MGs, covering proton exchange membrane fuel cell–CHP (PEMFC-CHP) units, RERs, PHEVs, and various storage methods. To tackle uncertainties in PHEV and RER models, we employ the robust Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) technique. Challenges related to hydrogen storage strategies in PEMFC-CHP units are addressed through a customized mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) approach. The integration of intelligent charging protocols governing PHEV charging dynamics is emphasized. Our primary goal centers on maximizing market profits, serving as the foundation for our optimization endeavors. At the heart of our approach is the Meerkat Optimization Algorithm (MOA), unraveling optimal MG operation amidst the intermittent nature of uncertain parameters. To amplify its exploratory capabilities and expedite global optima discovery, we enhance the MOA algorithm. The revised summary commences by outlining the overall goal and core algorithm, followed by a detailed explanation of optimization points for each MG component. Rigorous validation is executed using a conventional test system across diverse planning horizons. A comprehensive comparative analysis spanning varied scenarios establishes our proposed method as a benchmark against existing alternatives.

Abstract:This research study presents a novel approach to enhance the efficiency and performance of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESSs) within microgrids, focusing particularly on the integration of wind energy. The inherent inconsistency and unpredictability of Renewable Energy Resources (RERs) necessitate the development of effective integration solutions to accommodate them. Our article provides a customized iteration of the metaheuristic algorithm referred to as the Contracted fitness-dependent optimizer. The proposed methodology involves the adaptive adjustment of migration rates based on habitat suitability indices, while also considering variations in perturbations. The incorporation of Lévy flight and an elimination phase significantly enhances the algorithm's efficacy in problem-solving. In order to establish the superiority of our strategy over alternative optimization approaches, we conduct simulations across diverse conditions and subsequently compare the outcomes. It was calculated that the daily scheduling cost was 235.2 . In Scenario 3, the total operating expenses and arranging costs for 1 day, respectively, were determined to be 165 . Further, the highest depth of discharge level was around 77%. Moreover, a −9.18 kW and 23.02 kW maximum charging and discharging power adjustment was made. The findings of our study emphasize the economic and operational benefits associated with appropriately sized BESSs within microgrid contexts. These advantages have the potential to enhance battery longevity and promote the development of more sustainable energy systems.

Abstract:Density of renewable energy sources in distribution systems has developed a novel structure, called microgrid (MG), which consists of small-scale power grids with controllable and uncontrollable loads. MGs are a combination of different distributed generation resources (DGRs) which act as a controllable system at the distribution voltage level and supply power or heat to a group of local loads. Due to the high fluctuations of available power at the distribution voltage level, MGs may fail to supply major consumers. Therefore, several MGs are used by dividing consumers into smaller units; each unit is supplied by one MG. In this study, renewable sources such as wind turbine (WT), photovoltaic (PV) cell, and hydrogen storage system are considered as MGs. A novel energy management strategy is proposed using hydrogen storage system and considering uncertainties of renewable sources in the MG. This strategy aims to minimize the operating costs of batteries and hydrogen storage systems as well as unsupplied and surplus energy costs considering load supply constraints. Various resource constraints are employed in the proposed strategy. Moreover, demand response (DR) program is applied for MG optimal operation. The proposed model is implemented on a system using MATLAB software and meta-heuristic gray wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm. The results indicate applying hydrogen storage system and demand-side management (DSM) program could reduce the final cost of MGs and the proposed method has high efficiency in solving complex problems.

Abstract:Microgrids have been widely used due to their advantages, such as flexibility and cleanliness. This study adopts the hierarchical control method for microgrids containing multiple energy sources, i.e., photovoltaic (PV), wind, diesel, and storage, and carries out multi-objective optimization in the tertiary control, i.e., optimizing the economic cost, environmental cost, and the degree of energy utilization of microgrids. As the traditional multi-objective particle swarm algorithm is prone to local convergence, this study introduces variable inertia weight and learning factors to obtain a modified particle swarm algorithm, which is more advantageous in multi-objective optimization. Compared to the traditional particle swarm algorithm, the modified particle swarm algorithm increased the photovoltaic absorbed rate from 0.7724 to 0.8683 and the wind energy absorbed rate from 0.6064 to 0.7158 in one day, which resulted in an increase in energy utilization by 14.89%, and a reduction in financial environmental costs from RMB 135,870 to RMB 132,230. The simulation of the optimization effect of the conventional particle swarm algorithm and the modified particle swarm algorithm on the microgrid were carried out, respectively, in MATLAB, which verifies the advantage of the modified particle swarm algorithm on the optimization of microgrids. Then, the optimization results, i.e., the data of the power scheduling process of the four power sources, were made into a table and imported into the microgrid model in Simulink. The simulation results indicated that the microgrid was able to output stable voltage, current, and frequency. Finally, the changes in microgrids affected by the external environment were further investigated from the aspects of the market environment and natural environment. Moreover, we verified the presence of a contradiction between the optimization of the microgrid economy and environmental protection. Thus, microgrids need to adjust their optimization focus according to the natural conditions in which they are located.

Abstract:The proposed wind–solar–storage microgrid system model contains algorithmic solvers and energy management strategies. The multiobjective optimization method calculates the capacity scaling of the PV, wind turbine, and battery storage system for load demands. The TOPSIS technique is combined, which can effectively consume new energy and reduce the comprehensive cost of the system to obtain a comprehensive optimal solar, wind, and storage capacity scale under the current load state. How to effectively utilize renewable energy and improve the economic efficiency of microgrid system and its ability to consume renewable energy has become one of the main problems facing China at present. In response to this challenge, this paper establishes a multiobjective capacity optimization model with the minimum levelized cost of energy, the maximum proportion of renewable energy consumption, and the minimum comprehensive system cost. Based on this model, a new improved beluga whale optimization algorithm is proposed to solve the multiobjective optimization problem in the capacity allocation process of wind–solar–storage microgrid system with the goal of ensuring that the microgrid can meet the maximum load demand at different moments throughout the year. In this paper, opposition‐based learning, artificial bee colony, dynamic opposite, and beluga whale optimization are combined to improve the population diversity and convergence accuracy, thereby enhancing the optimization performance of the algorithm. Finally, after finding the optimal Pareto front solution, the Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to an Ideal Solution is used to help decision‐makers select the optimal solution. Using real load data and meteorological data, the results of this paper show that the multiobjective capacity allocation optimization method of grid‐connected scenic storage microgrid system based on the improved beluga whale optimization algorithm can improve the economics of the wind–solar–storage microgrid system and promote the photovoltaic consumption simultaneously, providing a solution for the realization of low‐carbon power and regional economic development. The best‐found levelized cost of energy for the wind–solar–storage microgrid system is 0.192 yuan/kWh.

Abstract:This study focuses on the implementation of an efficient hybrid power system in two main phases. Firstly, it aims to optimize the performance of individual renewable energy sources (RESs), ensuring their maximum efficiency. Secondly, it employs artificial intelligence to enhance energy flow within the microgrid. The primary focus is on ensuring the reliability, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness of microgrid operations. In the first phase, the system focuses on optimizing power generation from PV and wind turbines (WTs). To maximize power extraction from the PV system, the study utilizes turbulent flow of water-based optimization (TFWO) and gorilla troops optimizer (GTO) algorithms. An advanced hybrid TFWO-ANFIS and hybrid GTO-ANFIS-based MPPT techniques are proposed, enhancing energy capture efficiency. These advanced MPPT techniques combine the adaptability of ANFIS with the optimization capabilities of metaheuristic algorithms, resulting in improved energy capture efficiency. Additionally, the system improves the performance of WTs by implementing the Zero d-axis current (ZDC) strategy. The second phase focuses on efficient energy storage and utilization of backup systems. It uses optimization algorithms to manage battery charging, hydrogen production, and the Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) approach. The outcomes of the proposed study showcase optimized backup system operation, resulting in cost savings and increased utilization of RESs. The proposed system is comprehensively assessed across diverse operational scenarios. Four different cases are presented, each differing in the degree of involvement of backup sources. The results validate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy in managing power generation and load demand, ensuring optimal system performance. A comparative analysis of two algorithms is conducted, utilizing a set of 9 benchmark test functions. The results of this analysis highlight the superior speed and accuracy of TFWO in reaching the best solution. TFWO exhibited a faster convergence rate towards the optimal solution. The optimization algorithms succeed in reducing the operating cost significantly, notably reaching a 4.05 % reduction in the third scenario.

Abstract:The development of hybrid systems that combine different energy sources has become increasingly important to meet the growing demand for clean and sustainable energy. These systems can offer a reliable and efficient solution to reduce dependence on conventional energy sources and address the issues of climate change and environmental degradation. This study focuses on two types of hybrid systems, namely PV/biomass and PV/diesel, which are commonly used in off-grid areas or places with limited access to electricity. The proposed optimization framework aims to determine the optimal sizing of each component in the system, including PV panels, batteries, and backup sources, to maximize the performance and efficiency of the hybrid system. The Gradient Pelican Optimization Algorithm (GPOA), which is an advanced optimization technique, is proposed to solve the optimization problem. The algorithm is modified to include a local escaping operator, which allows the algorithm to escape local optima and achieve better solutions. The outcomes of the simulation show that the GPOA algorithm outperforms other well-known algorithms in terms of accuracy and computational efficiency. The simulation results also demonstrate that the PV/biomass hybrid system outperforms the PV/diesel hybrid system in terms of cost and environmental impact. The proposed framework and optimization methodology can be useful for designing and optimizing other hybrid systems and can be applied to various applications, including off-grid and remote areas, distributed power systems, and microgrids. The findings of this study can also contribute to the development and promotion of renewable energy and sustainable development.

Improved gray wolf optimization algorithm for solving placement and sizing of electrical energy storage system in micro-grids

Abstract:Micro-grids consist of distributed power generation systems (DGs), distributed energy storage devices (DSs), and loads. Micro-grids are small-scale networks at low voltage levels that are use to provide thermal and electrical loads of small locations where there is no access to the main electrical grid. Given the environmental and economic issues for these areas, micro-grids can be a good solution for energy production. In this paper, determining the size and location of optimal electrical energy storage systems is presented. In other side, a new method based on the cost benefit analysis for optimal sizing of an energy storage system in a microgrid (MG) is proposed. The uncertainties associated with renewable energy sources and the occurrence of defects in the grid connection network and the effect of the contribution of load responses in a micro-grid are taken into account. The combined system consists of wind turbines and fuel cells. Basically, wind power is not definitively available. The new proposed method is based on two-stage randomization design (TSRD) for modeling the effect of wind power uncertainty so that the predicted wind energy error is considered as the main random parameter in the model. A standard probability distribution function is used to represent the error variations. Given the continuity of the mentioned function, the probability error function is extracted using the new discrete method and a certain number of scenarios with a certain probability. Finally, the problem has been transformed into an optimization problem, and a gray wolf optimization (GWO) algorithm has been used to solve it. In the proposed developed model based on local and global search, the algorithm tries to reach the final result in the shortest possible time and with the most precision. The results of the simulation show the efficiency of the proposed method in solving the micro-grid problem.
Cost Optimization and Energy Management of a Microgrid Including Renewable Energy Resources and Electric Vehicles

Abstract:Penetration of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) is capable of alleviating numerous global environmental and energy challenges. Utilization of a significant number of PHEVs with significant capacity and control capabilities can increase electrical grid flexibility. However, optimum management of such vehicles with renewable energy sources (RESs) would be one of the primary difficulties needing to be investigated. In the form of a microgrid, the operation of substantial RESs' and PHEVs' penetration would be achieved when operating within a microgrid. The problem has been formulated and approached as a single-objective optimization model aiming to minimize the total cost of the grid-tied MG. The converged barnacles mating optimizer (CBMO) algorithm is deployed to tackle the problem. The derived results verify the desired performance of the method compared to well-established ones. In scenario 1, the CBMO method determines the MG operating costs that are lower than those given by some well-established methods including the genetic algorithm (GA), imperialist competitive algorithm (ICA), and particle swarm optimization (PSO). The cost computed by the CBMO is 263.632 euro ct/day. Likewise, the values of cost for scenarios 2 and 3 utilizing the hybrid CBMO method are 300.1364 euro ct/day and 336.2154 euro ct/day, respectively. The findings confirm the usefulness of the proposed CBMO algorithm with an excellent convergence rate. Comparing the average solution time of the CBMO algorithm with those provided by other algorithms reveals the excellent performance of the CBMO method. The obtained results indicate that the mean simulation time of the suggested CBMO approach in the first case is 5.19 s, whereas the time required by the GA, PSO, and ICA is 12.92 s, 10.73 s, and 7.27 s, respectively.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel optimization strategy for hybrid-renewable energy systems in microgrids. The multi-objective optimization approach is formulated for a PV-wind-diesel-battery hybrid system. Its main objectives are to minimize the levelized cost of energy (LCOE) and loss of power supply probability (LPSP) whilst maximizing the use of renewable energy sources (RES). The proposed optimization strategy combines the Taguchi method with a novel fuzzy decision-maker-based multi-objective optimization algorithm. It implements, a) an energy management strategy to optimize the use of the energy sources, b) a Taguchi method to determine the upper bounds of the model's decision variables, c) a multi-objective moth flame optimization algorithm to optimize the size of the renewable energy sources, and d) a fuzzy decision-making approach to obtain the best Pareto front. The proposed strategy was implemented to optimize the design of a hybrid renewable energy system based on three different scenarios consisting of 10, 15, and 20 residential houses located in Sønderborg, a town in the Region of Southern Denmark. The results of the proposed model in terms of loss of power supply probability and levelized cost of energy for the scenarios I, II, and III are [0.224, 0.754], [0.313, 0.612], and [0.368, 0.547] respectively. In addition, the optimal design of the hybrid renewable-based microgrid system for scenarios I, II, and III are [PV: 32 kW, AD: 4.86, WT: 6], [PV: 36 kW, AD: 4.73, WT: 7], and [PV: 47 kW, AD: 5, WT: 7], respectively. The effectiveness of the proposed multi-objective optimization algorithm (MOMFO) in solving the optimization problem was examined and the results were further compared with those of the Non-Dominated Sorting Algorithm II(NSGA-II), Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MOPSO), and Multi-Objective Social Engineering Optimizer (MOSEO).
