Abstract:Long-lasting extreme weather conditions are expected to occur more frequently in the future owing to climate change, as demonstrated by the recent heat waves. In particular, the decrease in precipitation during the summer months had a significant impact on urban tree water availability. Therefore, it is imperative to develop methodologies for determining the available water supply and evaporation rates for urban trees. We mapped data from 49 urban small-leaved linden trees with varying characteristics including groundwater levels, shading situations, tree pit sizes, pavement materials, and sealing ratios. By combining these data with an adapted Penman-Monteith method to calculate evapotranspiration, we simulated the soil water storage and evapotranspiration rates of these trees during the very dry year of 2018 as an example. Model validations were performed using lysimeter and sap-flow studies on Tilia cordata trees in 2022. During the growing season, most trees experienced water stress on > 85% of the days because of weak precipitation events that failed to refill soil water storage. In contrast, trees with additional water supply through capillary rise reached water stress approximately 45 d later. The model results suggest that many trees will require additional water supply during predicted droughts in the future, which could have significant implications for urban forestry management. This model approach can be used to test and refine future water supply management strategies, making it a useful planning tool for improving the water efficiency of trees in urban areas and blue-green infrastructure.

Abstract:Abstract The hydrological functioning of urban trees can reduce stormwater runoff, mitigate the risk of flood, and improve water quality in developed areas. Tree canopies intercept rainfall and return water to the atmosphere through transpiration, while roots increase infiltration and storage in the soil. Despite this, the amount of stormwater that trees remove through these functions in urban settings is not well characterized, limiting the use of urban forests as practical stormwater management strategies. To address this gap, we use ecohydrological approaches to assess the transpiration rates of urban trees in different management settings. Our research questions are: Do transpiration rates of trees of the same species vary among different management contexts? Do relationships between environmental drivers and transpiration change among management contexts? These management settings included single trees over turfgrass and a cluster of trees over turfgrass in Montgomery County, MD, and closed canopy forest with a leaf litter layer in Baltimore, MD. We used sap flux sensors installed in 18 mature red maple ( Acer rubrum L.) trees to characterize transpiration rates during the growing season. We also measured soil volumetric water content, air temperature, relative humidity, and precipitation at each site. In agreement with our initial hypothesis, we found that single trees had nearly three times the daily sum of sap flux density ( J S ) of closed canopy trees. When averaged over the entire measurement period, J S was approximately 260, 195, and 91 g H 2 O cm −2 day −1 for single trees, cluster trees and closed canopy trees, respectively. Additionally, single trees were more responsive to VPD than closed canopy and cluster trees. These results provide a better understanding of the influence of management context on urban tree transpiration and can help to identify targets to better manage urban forest settings to reduce urban stormwater runoff.

Abstract:Abstract Urban forests provide important ecosystem services to city residents, including pollution removal and carbon storage. Climate change and urbanization pose multiple threats to these services. However, how these threats combine to affect urban trees, and thus how to mitigate their effects, remains largely untested because multi‐factorial experiments on mature trees are impractical. We used a unique urban warming experiment paired with a laboratory chamber experiment to determine how three of the most potentially damaging factors associated with global change for urban and rural trees—warming, drought, and insect herbivory—affect growth of Quercus phellos (willow oak), the most commonly planted large shade tree in the southeastern US , which is known for its resilience to these potential stressors. In a previous study, we found that the urban heat island effect was associated with reduced growth of Q. phellos and higher abundance of Parthenolecanium scale insects, key pests of oaks in cities. Here, we tested the hypothesis that tree water stress is the mechanism for these effects of warming. We found evidence that water stress is a major, interactive factor reducing urban tree growth, but found no evidence that water stress is associated with Parthenolecanium survival or abundance. Warming and Parthenolecanium only reduced growth in Q. phellos saplings that were simultaneously water stressed. Synthesis and applications . Across many temperate cities worldwide, urban trees grow less than rural trees. Our results point to water stress as the most likely driver for this pattern. Importantly, we found that water stress both reduces tree growth on its own and exacerbates effects of warming and insect pests on tree growth. Therefore, management strategies targeted at increasing tree hydration in cities may reduce effects of these three key stressors that are expected to intensify with further urbanization and climate change. Abstract:We report on the adsorption of Mn(12) single-molecule magnets bearing external biphenyl groups on Au(111) surfaces after a simple dipping procedure. Topographic AFM images confirm that the biphenyl groups favor the adsorption of the molecules without the need of functionalization with thiols or thioether groups. The first formed molecular layer covers homogenously the whole surface, whereas further growth takes place mostly in the form of molecular wires (or aggregates) and, occasionally, as molecular islands. Interestingly, the Mn(12) core is preserved for all the cases, although its aggregation state appears to influence significantly the rigidity of the molecular aggregates. Force-volume imaging experiments have demonstrated that molecules at the second layer are stiffer, that is, more rigid, than the molecules lying at the background layer. This fact clearly reveals that the interplay of attractive and repulsive forces between molecules and the molecule-surface interaction modulate the mechanical properties of the Mn(12) single-molecule magnets upon grafting. These results are very important to understand how surface-induced morphological deformations can modify the magnetic properties of these molecular systems on the translation from the macroscopic to a surface.
The economic benefits of reductions in nitrogen loads from stormwater runoff by street trees

Abstract:Abstract It is increasingly recognised that urban trees can contribute to reducing stormwater runoff by intercepting and retaining a fraction of rainfall received. What is less studied is the translation of this to reduced pollutant loads being transferred to receiving streams, rivers, and water bodies. In this paper, we assess interception of two tree species (Eucalyptus microcorys and Ulmus procera) in an urban park. These data are used in simple water balance modelling to predict the environmental and economic benefit of reducing nitrogen loads to receiving waterways as a function of reduced runoff volume resulting from rainfall interception by urban trees on public land (21% of the catchment area). We use a highly urbanized catchment in Melbourne, Australia to demonstrate the impact of an urban forest dominated by deciduous trees, evergreen trees or a mixed tree canopy cover. We found that doubling the urban canopy cover in the catchment, while keeping the current mix ratio of deciduous and evergreen trees, could reduce annual runoff volume by 30 mm (92 MLyr−1). Using the prescribed values that developers must pay the local water authority for nitrogen treatment as a condition of new development, we calculate that this would deliver a nitrogen load removal benefit of AUD$ 200/tree. If only deciduous trees are planted, the annual runoff reduction would decrease to 24 mm (73 MLyr−1) and increases to 37 mm (112 MLyr−1) if only evergreen trees are planted. This study highlights both the additional benefits of public street trees and the differences in deciduous and evergreen trees which should be accounted for by policy makers.

Abstract:An outdoor reduced-scale canyon street was set-up in Angers, France, to study the impact of well-watered trees on urban microclimate and human comfort, with an integrated approach of the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. Data were acquired during 26 days in summer 2020. The street is oriented north-south, with an aspect ratio of 1. It is organized in three zones: two zones with a central alignment of 5 ornamental apple trees, and one zone without trees. The water inputs are controlled through a drip-irrigation system. Each zone is instrumented to characterise the local microclimate and energy fluxes, the soil water status, and tree leaf temperature. To allow a better understanding of the physical mechanisms at stake in tree services, tree transpiration as well as crown light interception are also quantified, and the trees are characterised in terms of leaf area and crown dimensions. The data can benefit to researchers in urban meteorology and environmental physics. It can also provide reference data to run and evaluate microclimate models, especially regarding plant-atmosphere interactions.

Abstract:Urban forests provide considerable ecosystem services for city dwellers, yet the function of forest species is increasingly challenged by urban drought. Understanding drought tolerance of urban forest species would facilitate vegetation conservation and establishment within urban ecosystems. Here, we report on the drought resistance of leaves for two exotic and three indigenous tree species common to the Jing-Jin-Ji metropolitan region (covering Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei province) of north China. Xylem vulnerability to drought-induced embolism and leaf gas exchange, together with various morphological and anatomical traits that potentially relate to plant water use, were measured for pot-grown seedlings. In addition, seedlings were subjected to dry-down at two different drought intensities until death, and the tree mortality rate was recorded. We found that species differ markedly in xylem embolism resistance, with indigenous species showing more negative P50 (the water potential triggering 50% loss of xylem hydraulic conductivity), but less canopy leaf area at a given branch basal diameter, compared with exotic species. Furthermore, P50 well predicted tree mortality rate under protracted drought stress. Species characterized by more negative P50 also exhibited higher maximum leaf photosynthetic rates. In addition, leaf P50 was found to correlate with specific leaf area, while the hydraulic safety margin was related to sapwood density and the thickness of the leaf upper epidermis. Collectively, these results highlight the role of embolism resistance in dictating drought response and the promise of morphological traits as proxies of plant physiological drought resistance. Our findings contribute to understanding drought response for urban tree species and will guide the establishment and management of urban forests.

Abstract:A sensitive analytical method has been developed for identification of ubiquinones (UQn(H )) and menaquinones x (MK-n(H )) in activated sludge by liquid chromatography–atmospheric pressure chemical ionization mass spectrometry in x negative mode (LC-NI-APCI-MS). Extraction and clean-up of samples were carried out on Sep-Pak Plus Silica solid-phase extraction cartridges. Complete separation of quinones was achieved with an ODS analytical column and using isopropyl ether–methanol (17:83, v /v) as the mobile phase. The compositions of ubiquinones and menaquinones were determined directly using combined information on retention time, the molecular ion mass and fragment ion masses. The lowest instrument quantitative detection limits (LOD ) for UQ-6, UQ-10, and Vitamin K1 were estimated to be 0.4, 4 and 0.12 ng inst (S /N510) using LC-NI-APCI-MS in SIM mode, and the lowest method detection limits (LOD ) achieved by spiking meth experiment were estimated to be 0.2, 2 and 0.06 mg/g for UQ-6, UQ-10 and Vitamin K1, respectively. On the other hand, the LOD for UQ-6, UQ-10, and Vitamin K1 were estimated to be 10, 100 and 2 ng ( S /N510) using LC-NI-APCI-MS in inst full-scan mode, and the LOD were estimated to be 7, 60 and 1.2 mg/g for UQ-6, UQ-10, and Vitamin K1, respectively. meth Both LC-NI-APCI-MS and LC–UV/DAD were applied in the analysis of an activated sludge extract. UQn (n56–10), MK-n (n56–10), MK-n(H ) (n57–10), MK-n(H ) (n58–9) and MK-8(H ) were detected by LC-NI-APCI-MS, while 2 4 6 UQ-6, UQ-7, MK-7(H ), MK-9 and MK-10(H ) were not found by LC–UV/DAD. These results suggest that LC-NI-APCI2 2 MS is more sensitive than LC–UV/DAD for the analysis of quinones in environmental samples such as sediment, activated sludge and bio-film in biological processes and other aquatic environments.  2003 Elsevier B.V. How robust is the evidence for beneficial hydrological effects of urban tree planting?

Abstract:Sustainable urban water management initiatives are increasingly required to combat rapid urbanization and climate pressures. Initiatives include the role of tree planting, for which there is a need for strong evidence of benefits and drawbacks to support effective future planning. We report on the robustness of evidence from an assimilated database of urban hydrological impact studies which often had differing primary purposes. Consistent impacts were found at the local level, with trees reducing runoff and infiltration. Despite the consistency of evidence, much is undermined by the studies being somewhat lacking in robustness and scientific rigour. Many studies lack adequate controls, and models are often not strongly tested against observations. Moreover, evidence of impact at larger scales is lacking. Effects of tree characteristics were also investigated, such as maturity and species (for which evidence is consistent and detailed) and arrangement (for which there is less evidence). Realizing the full potential of trees in urban water management decision-making would benefit from more rigorous evidence.

Abstract:Street trees planted at tree pits with impermeable pavements are exposed to a high level of both, atmospheric and edaphic stress. For many species tree physiology, optimal growth, and consequently long-term vitality may be hampered under these harsh conditions. Therefore, maintaining the vitality and promoting the ecosystem services provided by urban trees, for example aesthetic values and microclimatic benefits, it is important to establish trees with a high tolerance to stressful urban environments. Measurements of leaf gas exchange, leaf water potential, leaf surface temperature and chlorophyll-fluorescence were used for identification of specific response of Corylus corluna L., Ginkgo biloba L., Liriodendron tulipifera L., and Tilia cordata Mill. ‘Greenspire’. The summer months in 2013 with a period of heat and drought over eight weeks only interrupted by two rainy days were appropriate to access tree’s strategies to cope with low water availability. During the measurement period, the influence of high temperatures, high values of vapor pressure deficit (VPD) and low soil water availability on stomatal conductance, water-use efficiency (WUE) and leaf water potential (Ψmin, Ψmax ) was highest for Liriodendron followed by Ginkgo. These species showed high reductions in WUE in case of higher air temperatures and high values of VPD. Results indicate an avoidance strategy under increasing heat and VPD. In contrast, Corylus and Tilia followed a tolerance strategy indicated by decreasing values of Ψmin and lower reductions of WUE. In conclusion, wide species-specific variation in response to high temperatures and high VPD indicates that substantial potential exists in the selection for dry and hot urban places.

Abstract:Photosynthesis is a fundamental process that trees perform over fluctuating environmental conditions. This study of red maple (Acer rubrum L.) characterizes photosynthesis, stomatal conductance, and water use efficiency in planted cultivars relative to wildtype trees. Red maple is common in cities, yet there is little understanding of how physiological processes affect the long-term growth, condition, and ecosystem services provided by urban trees. In the first year of our study, we measured leaf-level gas exchange and performed short-term temperature curves on urban planted cultivars and on suburban and rural wildtype trees. In the second year, we compared urban planted cultivars and urban wildtype trees. In the first year, urban planted trees had higher maximum rates of photosynthesis and higher overall rates of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance throughout the summer, relative to suburban or rural wildtype trees. Urban planted trees again had higher maximum rates of photosynthesis in the second year. However, urban wildtype trees had higher water use efficiency as air temperatures increased and similar overall rates of photosynthesis, relative to cultivars, in mid and late summer. Our results show that physiological differences between cultivars and wildtype trees may relate to differences in their genetic background and their responses to local environmental conditions, contingent on the identity of the horticultural variety. Overall, our results suggest that wildtype trees should be considered for some urban locations, and our study is valuable in demonstrating how site type and tree type can inform tree planting strategies and improve long-term urban forest sustainability.

Soil moisture and water redistribution patterns in white oak (Quercus alba) saplings and trees in fragmented urban woodlands

Abstract:In the midwestern United States, models predict extended summer heatwaves and increasingly frequent and prolonged drought conditions. In the Chicago region, the potential for large-scale mortality of white oak trees (Quercus alba) coupled with the ongoing decline of white oak sapling recruitment are major concerns for researchers and practitioners. In this study, we determined the sources of water used by mature white oak trees and saplings in three qualitatively different sites within a remnant oak forest in Chicago during the 2021 drought. We investigated soil moisture dynamics (volumetric water content, VWC) and water isotope composition of leaf tissues (δD, δ18O), rainwater, and groundwater. These data were linked to sapling height (proxy for biomass) and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) functional types. We predicted that: (i) mature oak trees use deeper water sources and conducted hydraulic redistribution (HR), and (ii) mature trees shared water with saplings during dry periods via long-distance ECM functional types. Soil moisture decreased progressively from June to October (spring to fall), with August and September having the lowest moisture (<20 % VWC). Following rainfall recharge, temporal patterns of soil moisture showed gravity drainage and then ongoing stair-stepwise drawdown consistent with plant evapotranspiration. Leaf δD and δ18O values in mature trees and saplings were consistent with water uptake from rainfall and subsequent enrichment via evapotranspiration. In two sites, mature trees and saplings demonstrated distinct δD: δ18O slopes, with mature trees more enriched than saplings. In the third site, mature trees and saplings δD: δ18O slopes overlapped but here, the ECM community was dominated by contact-type ECM and sapling height increased with distance from the mature oak. Our findings indicate that HR was not a component of site ecohydrology, and future climate conditions may present increasing challenges for white oak recruitment as both mature trees and saplings compete for limited rainfall-derived soil moisture.
The Urban Forest and Ecosystem Services: Impacts on Urban Water, Heat, and Pollution Cycles at the Tree, Street, and City Scale

Abstract:Many environmental challenges are exacerbated within the urban landscape, such as stormwater runoff and flood risk, chemical and particulate pollution of urban air, soil and water, the urban heat island, and summer heat waves. Urban trees, and the urban forest as a whole, can be managed to have an impact on the urban water, heat, carbon and pollution cycles. However, there is an increasing need for empirical evidence as to the magnitude of the impacts, both beneficial and adverse, that urban trees can provide and the role that climatic region and built landscape circumstance play in modifying those impacts. This special section presents new research that advances our knowledge of the ecological and environmental services provided by the urban forest. The 14 studies included provide a global perspective on the role of trees in towns and cities from five continents. Some studies provide evidence for the cooling benefit of the local microclimate in urban green space with and without trees. Other studies focus solely on the cooling benefit of urban tree transpiration at a mesoscale or on cooling from canopy shade at a street and pedestrian scale. Other studies are concerned with tree species differences in canopy interception of rainfall, water uptake from biofilter systems, and water quality improvements through nutrient uptake from stormwater runoff. Research reported here also considers both the positive and the negative impacts of trees on air quality, through the role of trees in removing air pollutants such as ozone as well as in releasing potentially harmful volatile organic compounds and allergenic particulates. A transdisciplinary framework to support future urban forest research is proposed to better understand and communicate the role of urban trees in urban biogeochemical cycles that are highly disturbed, highly managed, and of paramount importance to human health and well-being.
Rainfall interception by urban trees: Event characteristics and tree morphological traits

Abstract:We measured throughfall directly beneath Norway maple and small‐leaved lime crowns to determine the interception of solitary urban trees at different sites and to investigate the relationships between rainfall characteristics, tree morphological traits, and the interception behaviour. Norway maple exhibited an average interception of 54.8% (2.58 mm), while small‐leaved lime had an average of 70.3% (3.73 mm). We observed that the leaf area index, a key parameter for describing the interception process (adj. R2 >0.53), was lowest at sites with the highest degree of surface sealing, and these sites exhibited the lowest interception compared to sites with a higher degree of permeable surface beneath the canopy. The rapid expansion of impermeable surfaces in cities has a major impact on urban hydrology by reducing rainwater infiltration and increasing runoff rates and peaks. The use of urban trees as stormwater management tools is gaining recognition for their potential to mitigate flood risk and provide additional ecosystem services. We conducted an in‐situ field experiment to measure throughfall on Norway maple (Acer platanoides) and small‐leaved lime (Tilia cordata) to assess the interception capacity of solitary urban trees under different degrees of surface sealing in the city of Freiburg, Germany. We examined the relationships between rainfall characteristics, tree morphological traits, and the interception behaviour, analysing eight trees per species over 76 recorded rainfall events from April to September 2021. Average interception values were higher for small‐leaved lime trees (70.3% ± 6.6%) than for Norway maple (54.8% ± 10.3%) surpassing those in typical forested environments. The average interception loss of all recorded events was 2.6 ± 0.6 mm for Norway maple and 3.7 ± 0.3 mm for small‐leaved lime. For both tree species, significant linear correlations were found between the relative interception and factors such as rainfall depths, the leaf area index (LAI), and the plant area index (PAI) (adj. R2 >0.45). Unlike Norway maple, small‐leaved lime demonstrated significant relationships between several tree morphological parameters and interception (adj. R2 >0.43). The LAI of both species significantly decreased with the increasing degree of surface sealing, which in turn affected interception rates. Our results enhance the understanding of the interception process by solitary trees in urban contexts and enables the parameterization of interception rates using measurable properties. To develop a comprehensive database for modelling parameters and aid urban planners in stormwater management, further field experiments involving various tree species are essential.

Abstract:One common measure to mitigate the impacts of rising temperatures within cities is increasing the amount of vegetation, especially urban trees and their canopies. To maximize the associated benefits of urban trees in a given city or neighborhood, it is important that the canopy of newly planted trees matches or exceeds the canopy of the trees that are lost. However, cities often use cross-sectional data to make decisions about the number of trees that should be planted without considering an individual tree's growth and life span. In this study, individual tree growth and longevity data were used to portray the current and future conditions of street trees in six neighborhoods near Downtown Los Angeles and to identify locations in those neighborhoods that are in urgent need of interventions for tree planting. The results of this study indicate that, under the typical tree mortality scenario, near half of the current tree canopy will disappear by 2050, and on average, approximately one percent of the existing street trees will be lost due to aging each year. The approach used in this study shows how cities can monitor the age and mortality rate of the urban tree canopy over time. This approach informs tree planting campaigns that will preserve the long-term vitality and size of urban tree canopies and contribute to the resiliency of cities in a warmer future climate.

Abstract:The research uncovers that diverse bark characteristics of urban trees distinctly affect stemflow's ion concentrations, leading to varied soil chemistry around the trees. This species‐specific influence of bark on stemflow chemistry demonstrates the bark's role as a biogeochemical mediator in urban ecosystems. These findings underscore the complex interactions between urban forestry and ecosystem services, highlighting the importance of species selection in urban planning for enhanced environmental benefits. This study investigates the influence of bark properties on nutrient fluxes in urban environments, focusing on the relationship between bark wettability, chemical composition, and the concentrations of nutrients in stemflow and adjacent soil across eight urban tree species. Through a comprehensive analysis involving chemical assays and ecohydrological measurements, we explored how variations in bark characteristics affect water interaction and subsequent chemical dynamics within urban landscapes. Contrary to the initial hypothesis that bark properties would significantly influence nutrient flux, results revealed a complex scenario where environmental and anthropogenic factors in urban settings seemingly overshadow the direct impact of bark characteristics on nutrient dynamics. Our findings indicate that while bark properties such as wettability and chemical composition do vary among tree species, these variations do not directly correlate with significant differences in stemflow or soil nutrient concentrations. This suggests a homogenising effect of urban environments on ecohydrological processes, highlighting the need for a broader understanding of urban forest ecology that incorporates both biological traits and urban‐specific environmental influences. This research contributes to the field of urban ecohydrology by underscoring the complexity of nutrient fluxes in urban forests and suggesting that effective urban tree management requires an integrated approach that considers the interplay between tree physiological traits and urban environmental conditions. Our study calls for further research to unravel the intricate dynamics of urban ecosystems, aiming to enhance the sustainability and ecological benefits of urban forests.

Abstract:The volume of stormwater generated by streetscapes in cities is a primary driver of urban stream degradation. Large infiltration trenches can be integrated into streetscapes to potentially retain large volumes of runoff and increase growth rates of nearby trees. To test this, a field study was conducted where three structural soil infiltration trenches receiving runoff (12 m long, 0.6 m wide and 0.6 deep) were installed alongside a carpark in Melbourne, Australia, with sizing determined by space constraints in a typical streetscape. The three structural soil trenches had raised outflow drainage, which created internal water storage for runoff received from a carpark. To separate the effects on tree growth of i) the presence of structural soil from ii) passive irrigation into the structural soil, three structural soil trenches (6 m long, 0.6 m wide and 0.6 deep) not receiving runoff and without outflow drainage were also installed. Runoff capture, exfiltration, outflow and tree growth was monitored over 19 months. Only one system performed close to the design intent and retained 18 % of runoff, due to slow soil exfiltration rates (<0.1 mm h −1 ). Compacted soil generated pervious-area runoff that filled the structural soil trenches not receiving impervious-area runoff from the carpark. Tree growth near these structural soil trenches was poor (59 % relative growth) compared with trees receiving runoff from the carpark (112 % relative growth), due to a lack of drainage, emphasising the need for drainage of stormwater systems in heavy textured soils to promote tree growth. This study highlights that options for creating storage for stormwater in streetscapes have the potential to meet local runoff infiltration targets. However, meeting local runoff volume reduction targets will require alternative ways to reduce surface runoff.

Abstract:Sap flow, the transport of fluid in the water-conducting xylem tissues of plants, is commonly measured in studies of plant-water relationships by the heat pulse velocity method. Publications have been rare of long-term sap flow measurements for individual trees in a suburban environment. Plant-water relations in urban settings are essential for promoting urban greening where there is a perceived danger to infrastructure and buildings from planting trees in streets on clay sites. The function of residential houses built on reactive clays can be significantly impaired and walls of buildings cracked if considerable amounts of water are extracted from the soil by the root system of a tree or a group of trees in close proximity, leading to localised soil shrinkage settlement. This part of the wider study aimed to monitor sap flow of eight individual Australian native trees from two species using the heat ratio method (HRM) in the field over 12 months. The analysis of monthly sap flow volume showed a similar pattern for all monitored trees, although daily water demand varied substantially. Methods for estimating tree leaf surface area, crown shape and crown volume were investigated and the equation for calculating thermal diffusivity (k) and sap flow velocity on the basis of the HRM was reviewed. It has been proposed that k may vary substantially depending on how thermal conductivity (K) is estimated, which could lead to significant discrepancies for estimations of plant transpiration. Two K models (KHog and KVan) were investigated and it was found that the impact on mean daily sap volume was negligible for the trees in this study.
