Abstract:This work will incorporate a few related tools for addressing the conceptual difficulties arising from sewing together classical and quantum mechanics: deterministic operators, weak measurements and post-selection. Weak Measurement, based on a very weak von Neumann coupling, is a unique kind of quantum measurement with numerous theoretical and practical applications. In contrast to other measurement techniques, it allows to gather a small amount of information regarding the quantum system, with only a negligible probability of collapsing it. A single weak measurement yields an almost random outcome, but when performed repeatedly over a large ensemble, the averaged outcome becomes increasingly robust and accurate. Importantly, a long sequence of weak measurements can be thought of as a single projective measurement. I claim in this work that classical variables appearing in the macro-world, such as centre of mass, moment of inertia, pressure and average forces, result from a multitude of quantum weak measurements performed in the micro-world. Here again, the quantum outcomes are highly uncertain, but the law of large numbers obliges their convergence to the definite quantities we know from our everyday lives. By augmenting this description with a final boundary condition and employing the notion of "classical robustness under time-reversal" I will draw a quantitative borderline between the classical and quantum regimes. I will conclude by analyzing the role of macroscopic systems in amplifying and recording quantum outcomes.

Broadening the scope of weak quantum measurements I: A single particle accurately measured yet left superposed

Abstract:Weak measurement is unique in enabling measurements of non-commuting operators as well as otherwise-undetectable peculiar phenomena predicted by the Two-State-Vector-Formalism (TSVF). This article, the first in two parts, explores novel applications of weak measurement. We first revisit the basic principles of quantum measurement with the aid of the Michelson interferometer. Weak measurement is then introduced in a simple visualized manner by a specific choice of the reflecting mirror's position and momentum uncertainties. Having introduced the method, we proceed to its refinement for a single particle. We consider a photon going back and forth inside the interferometer, oscillating between a superposed and a localized state, while subjected to alternating strong and weak measurements. This cyclic process enables directly measuring both the photon's position ("which-path") and momentum (interference), without disturbing either. An alternative explanation of this result, not invoking weak values, is thoroughly considered and shown to be at odds with the experimental data. Finally a practical application of this experiment is demonstrated, where a single photon measures the various transmission coefficients of a multiport beam-splitter yet remains superposed. This method is then generalized to measurement of the wave-function itself, performed again on a single particle.

Abstract:Summary form only given. Strong light-atom interaction is at the heart of atomic, molecular and optical physics; and is also important to quantum optics, quantum computing, nuclear magnetic resonance and laser. When an atom (or two-level system) is illuminated by a coherent beam of photons, it will cyclically absorb photons and re-emit them by stimulated emission, which is called Rabi oscillation. Here we developed a semiclassical framework to model the phenomenon via a self-consistent solution to Maxwell-Schrödinger equations. Different from Maxwell-Bloch equations, the wave function of the atom replacing for the density matrix nonlinearly interacts with the magnetic vector potential under coulomb gauge condition. A well-posed time evolution system derived from light-atom Hamiltonian is numerically solved by finite-difference time-domain method. The developed semiclassical Maxwell-Schrödinger framework could be generalized to model light-exciton interaction in semiconductor nanostructures.
Influence of Weak Measurement on Uncertainty Relations in a Quantum Dissipative System

Abstract:We investigate the influence of weak measurement on the quantum-memory-assisted entropic uncertainty relation and quantum speed limit time in a quantum dissipative system by making use of the hierarchical equations of motion method. It is demonstrated that the weak measurement and measurement reversal can suppress the entropic uncertainty during the evolution of the system, and we find a periodical crossover of the quantum speed limit time for different weak measurement strengths, which disappears when increasing the coupling strength. Similar influence of the weak measurement on uncertainty relations is then explored at the finite temperature. We also consider the effect of the counter-rotating-wave term and show that the rotating-wave approximation is an applicable approximation when studying quantum speed limit time but not appropriate when investigating the quantum-memory-assisted entropic uncertainty relation. Abstract:Quantum measurement remains a puzzle through its stormy history from the birth of quantum mechanics to state-of-the-art quantum technologies. Two complementary measurement schemes have been widely investigated in a variety of quantum systems: von Neumann's projective 'strong' measurement and Aharonov's weak measurement. Here, we report the observation of a weak-to-strong measurement transition in a single trapped 40Ca+ ion system. The transition is realized by tuning the interaction strength between the ion's internal electronic state and its vibrational motion, which play the roles of the measured system and the measuring pointer, respectively. By pre- and post-selecting the internal state, a pointer state composed of two of the ion's motional wavepackets is obtained, and its central-position shift, which corresponds to the measurement outcome, demonstrates the transition from the weak-value asymptotes to the expectation-value asymptotes. Quantitatively, the weak-to-strong measurement transition is characterized by a universal transition factor \({e}^{-{\varGamma }^{2}/2}\), where Γ is a dimensionless parameter related to the system–apparatus coupling. This transition, which continuously connects weak measurements and strong measurements, may open new experimental possibilities to test quantum foundations and prompt us to re-examine and improve the measurement schemes of related quantum technologies.

Abstract:We analyze the operation of a switching-based detector that probes a qubit's observable that does not commute with the qubit's Hamiltonian, leading to a nontrivial interplay between the measurement and free-qubit dynamics. In order to obtain analytical results and develop intuitive understanding of the different possible regimes of operation, we use a theoretical model where the detector is a quantum two-level system that is constantly monitored by a macroscopic system. We analyze how to interpret the outcome of the measurement and how the state of the qubit evolves while it is measured. We find that the answers to the above questions depend on the relation between the different parameters in the problem. In addition to the traditional strong-measurement regime, we identify a number of regimes associated with weak qubit-detector coupling. An incoherent detector whose switching time is measurable with high accuracy can provide high-fidelity information, but the measurement basis is determined only upon switching of the detector. An incoherent detector whose switching time can be known only with low accuracy provides a measurement in the qubit's energy eigenbasis with reduced measurement fidelity. A coherent detector measures the qubit in its energy eigenbasis and, under certain conditions, can provide high-fidelity information.

Abstract:Quantum weak measurement has attracted much interest recently [J. Dressel et al., Rev. Mod. Phys. 86, 307 (2014)] because it could amplify some weak signals and provide a technique to observe nonclassical phenomena. Here, we apply this technique to study the interaction between the free atoms and the vacuum in a cavity. Due to the gradient field in the vacuum cavity, the external orbital motions and the internal electronic states of atoms can be weakly coupled via the atom-field electric-dipole interaction. We show that, within the properly postselected internal states, the weak atom-vacuum interaction could generate a large change to the external motions of atoms due to the postselection-induced weak values.

Abstract:In 1988, Aharonov, Albert, and Vaidman introduced a new paradigm of quantum measurement in a paper which had the unwieldy but provocative title "How the result of a measurement of a component of the spin of a spin-1=2 particle can turn out to be 100." This paradigm, so-called "weak measurement," has since been the subject of widespread theoretical and experimental attention, both for the perspective it offers on quantum reality and for possible applications to precision measurement. Yet almost all of the weak-measurement experiments carried out so far could be alternatively understood in terms of the classical (electro-magnetic wave) theory of optics. Here we present a truly quantum version, the first in which a measurement apparatus deterministically entangles two distinct optical beams, enabling us to experimentally ask a question directly analogous to that of the original proposal: "In a two-arm interferometer containing one photon in total, can the result of a measurement of the photon number in one arm turn out to be greater than 1?" Specifically, we show that a single photon, when properly post-selected, can have an effect equal to that of eight photons: that is, in a system where a single photon has been calibrated to write a nonlinear phase shift of \phi_0 on a probe beam, we measure phase shifts as large as 8\phi_0 for appropriately post-selected single photons. This is the first deterministic weak-value experiment in optics which defies classical explanation, and constitutes a realization of our proposal for weak-value amplification (WVA) of the small optical nonlinearity at the single-photon level. It opens up a new regime for the study of entanglement of optical beams, as well as further investigations of the power of WVA for the measurement of small quantities.

On the connection between weak measurement in quantum physics and analytic phase-retrieval in classical wave optics

Abstract:The physical interpretation of weak measurements has been the subject of much debate. It is known that anomalous phenomena and results that appear in weak measurements are essentially related to the phase of the quantum system being measured. Consideration of the phase is important to clarify its physical interpretation. In classical wave optics, there has long been studies on methods of measuring or retrieving the phase of a wave function. We here present that one of those methods, the analytic phase retrieval based on the properties of entire functions, has a close connection with weak measurements in quantum physics. We explain such a connection for two emblematic optical weak-measurements that have the same mathematical formalism as quantum systems: one is a system for weak measurements of polarized light displacement in a birefringent crystal, and the other is a system for the direct measurement of a wave function by weakly coupling it to a pointer. In those two systems, we show that the pre- and post-selection of polarized light provides a filtering effect similar to that utilized in the analytic phase retrieval.

Abstract:It is of great importance to determine an unknown quantum state for fundamental studies of quantum mechanics, yet it is still difficult to characterize systems of large dimensions in practice. Although the scan-free direct measurement approach based on a weak measurement scheme was proposed to measure a high-dimensional photonic state, how weak the interaction should be to give a correct estimation remains unclear. Here we propose and experimentally demonstrate a technique that measures a high-dimensional quantum state with the combination of scan-free measurement and direct strong measurement. The procedure involves sequential strong measurement, in which case no approximation is made similarly to the conventional direct weak measurement. We use this method to measure a transverse state of a photon with effective dimensionality of 65000 without the time-consumed scanning process. Furthermore, the high fidelity of the result and the simplicity of the experimental apparatus show that our approach can be readily used to measure the complex field of a beam in diverse applications such as wavefront sensing and quantitative phase imaging.

Abstract:Advances in the research of interactions between ultrafast free electrons and light have introduced a previously unknown kind of quantum matter, quantum free-electron wavepackets<a href="#ref-CR1">1</a>,<a href="#ref-CR2">2</a>,<a href="#ref-CR3">3</a>,<a href="#ref-CR4">4</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2321-x#ref-CR5">5</a>. So far, studies of the interactions of cavity-confined light with quantum matter have focused on bound electron systems, such as atoms, quantum dots and quantum circuits, which are considerably limited by their fixed energy states, spectral range and selection rules. By contrast, quantum free-electron wavepackets have no such limits, but so far no experiment has shown the influence of a photonic cavity on quantum free-electron wavepackets. Here we develop a platform for multidimensional nanoscale imaging and spectroscopy of free-electron interactions with photonic cavities. We directly measure the cavity-photon lifetime via a coherent free-electron probe and observe an enhancement of more than an order of magnitude in the interaction strength relative to previous experiments of electron–photon interactions. Our free-electron probe resolves the spatiotemporal and energy–momentum information of the interaction. The quantum nature of the electrons is verified by spatially mapping Rabi oscillations of the electron spectrum. The interactions between free electrons and cavity photons could enable low-dose, ultrafast electron microscopy of soft matter or other beam-sensitive materials. Such interactions may also open paths towards using free electrons for quantum information processing and quantum sensing. Future studies could achieve free-electron strong coupling<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2321-x#ref-CR6">6</a>,<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2321-x#ref-CR7">7</a>, photon quantum state synthesis<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2321-x#ref-CR8">8</a> and quantum nonlinear phenomena such as cavity electro-optomechanics<a href="/articles/s41586-020-2321-x#ref-CR9">9</a>.

Abstract:Quantum weak measurements became extremely popular in classical optics to amplify small optical signals for fundamental interests and potential applications. Later, a more general extension, joint weak measurement has been proposed to extract weak value from a joint quantum measurement. However, the detection of joint weak value in the realm of classical optics remains less explored. Here, using the polarization-dependent longitudinal and transverse optical beam shift as a platform, we experimentally realize the quantum joint weak measurement in a classical optical setting. Polarization states are cleverly pre and post-selected, and different single and joint canonical position-momentum observables of the beam are experimentally extracted and subsequently analyzed for successful detection of complex joint weak value. We envision that this work will find usefulness for gaining fundamental insights on quantum measurements and to tackle analogous problems in optics.

Abstract:The wave function is at the foundation of quantum theory, which is assumed to give a complete description of a quantum system. From early inception, the wave function was introduced as an abstract element of the theory and lacked any way to measure it directly. The situation, however, has somewhat changed with the reporting of the direct measurement of the quantum wave function via weak measurements, giving the wave function a clearly operational definition. The weak measurement method requires sequential measurements of conjugate observables position and momentum with the position measurement sufficiently weak. Surprisingly, recent research showed that performing sequential strong measurements realized the same object, in which case no approximation in weak measurements has to be made. Here, we report on experiments of direct measurements of the two-dimensional transverse wave function of photons via strong measurement, implying that an accurate and clear operational definition may be given to the wave function. We have measured the Gaussian and Laguerre-Gaussian of l = 1 spatial wave functions of photons with fidelity of 0.93. As a potential important application, we show that this direct measurement of the wave function provides an alternative way to realize digital holography of three-dimensional objects. This realization of direct measurement of the wave function has significant consequences in quantum information processing and quantum imaging.
Nonclassicality in Weak Measurements

Abstract:We examine weak measurements of arbitrary observables where the object is prepared in a mixed state and on which measurements with imperfect detectors are made. The weak value of an observable can be expressed as a conditional expectation value over an infinite class of different generalized Kirkwood quasi-probability distributions. "Strange" weak values for which the real part exceeds the eigenvalue spectrum of the observable can only be found if the Terletsky-Margenau-Hill distribution is negative, or, equivalently, if the real part of the weak value of the density operator is negative. We find that a classical model of a weak measurement exists whenever the Terletsky-Margenau-Hill representation of the observable equals the classical representation of the observable and the Terletsky-Margenau-Hill distribution is nonnegative. Strange weak values alone are not sufficient to obtain a contradiction with classical models. We propose feasible weak measurements of photon number of the radiation field. Negative weak values of energy contradicts all classical stochastic models, whereas negative weak values of photon number contradict all classical stochastic models where the energy is bounded from below by the zero-point energy. We examine coherent states in particular, and find negative weak values with probabilities of 16% for kinetic energy (or squared field quadrature), 8% for harmonic oscillator energy and 50% for photon number. These experiments are robust against detector inefficiency and thermal noise.

Abstract:The quantum theory of measurement has been with us since quantum mechanics was invented. It has recently been invigorated, partly due to the increasing interest in quantum information science. In this partly pedagogical review I attempt to give a self-contained overview of non-relativistic quantum theory of measurement expressed in density matrix formalism. I will not dwell on the applications in quantum information theory; it is well covered by several books in that field. The focus is instead on applications to the theory of weak measurement, as developed by Aharonov and collaborators. Their development of weak measurement combined with what they call post-selection - judiciously choosing not only the initial state of a system ( pre-selection ) but also its final state - has received much attention recently. Not the least has it opened up new, fruitful experimental vistas, like novel approaches to amplification. But the approach has also attached to it some air of mystery. I will attempt to demystify it by showing that (almost) all results can be derived in a straight-forward way from conventional quantum mechanics. Among other things, I develop the formalism not only to first order but also to second order in the weak interaction responsible for the measurement. I apply it to the so called Leggett-Garg inequalities, also known as Bell inequalities in time . I also give an outline, even if rough, of some of the ingenious experiments that the work by Aharonov and collaborators has inspired. As an application of weak measurement, not related to the approach by Aharonov and collaborators, the formalism also allows me to derive the master equation for the density matrix of an open system in interaction with an environment. An issue that remains in the weak measurement plus post-selection approach is the interpretation of the so called weak value of an observable. Is it a bona fide property of the system considered? I have no definite answer to this question; I shall only exhibit the consequences of the proposed interpretation. Quanta 2013; 2: 18–49.

Strong coupling and single-photon nonlinearity in free-electron quantum optics

Abstract:The observation that free electrons can interact coherently with quantized electromagnetic fields and matter systems has led to a plethora of proposals leveraging the unique quantum properties of free electrons. At the heart of these proposals lies the assumption of a strong quantum interaction between a flying free electron and a photonic mode. However, existing schemes are intrinsically limited by electron diffraction, which puts an upper bound on the interaction length and therefore the quantum coupling strength. Here, we propose the use of "free-electron fibers'': effectively one-dimensional photonic systems where free electrons co-propagate with two guided modes. The first mode applies a ponderomotive trap to the free electron, effectively lifting the limitations due to electron diffraction. The second mode strongly couples to the guided free electron, with an enhanced coupling that is orders of magnitude larger than previous designs. Moreover, the extended interaction lengths enabled by our scheme allows for strong single-photon nonlinearities mediated by free electrons. We predict a few interesting observable quantum effects in our system, such as deterministic single-photon emission and complex, nonlinear multimode dynamics. Our proposal paves the way towards the realization of many anticipated effects in free-electron quantum optics, such as non-Gaussian light generation, deterministic single photon emission, and quantum gates controlled by free-electron--photon interactions.

Abstract:The interaction between free electrons and optical fields constitutes a unique platform to investigate ultrafast processes in matter and explore fundamental quantum phenomena. Specifically, optically modulated electrons in ultrafast electron microscopy act as noninvasive probes that push space–time–energy resolution to the picometer–attosecond–microelectronvolt range. Electron energies well above the involved photon energies are commonly used, rendering a low electron–light coupling and, thus, only providing limited access to the wealth of quantum nonlinear phenomena underlying the dynamical response of nanostructures. Here, we theoretically investigate electron–light interactions between photons and electrons of comparable energies, revealing quantum and recoil effects that include a nonvanishing coupling of surface-scattered electrons to light plane waves, inelastic electron backscattering from confined optical fields, and strong electron–light coupling under grazing electron diffraction by an illuminated crystal surface. Our exploration of electron–light–matter interactions holds potential for applications in ultrafast electron microscopy.

Abstract:We examine the results of the paper “Precision metrology using weak measurements” (Zhang et al. arXiv:1310.5302, 2013) from a quantum state discrimination point of view. The Heisenberg scaling of the photon number for the precision of the interaction parameter between coherent light and a spin one-half particle (or pseudo-spin) has a simple interpretation in terms of the interaction rotating the quantum state to an orthogonal one. To achieve this scaling, the information must be extracted from the spin rather than from the coherent state of light, limiting the applications of the method to phenomena such as cross-phase modulation. We next investigate the effect of dephasing noise and show a rapid degradation of precision, in agreement with general results in the literature concerning Heisenberg scaling metrology. We also demonstrate that a von Neumann-type measurement interaction can display a similar effect with no system/meter entanglement.
