Abstract:Abstract. Alpine peatlands are recognized as a major natural contributor to the budgets of atmospheric methane (CH4) but as a weak nitrous oxide (N2O) source. Anthropogenic activities and climate change have put these fragile nitrogen (N)-limited peatlands under pressure by altering water table (WT) levels and enhancing N deposition. The response of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from these peatlands to these changes is uncertain. To address this knowledge gap, we conducted a mesocosm experiment in 2018 and 2019 investigating individual and interactive effects of three WT levels (WT−30, 30 cm below soil surface; WT0, 0 cm at the soil surface; WT10, 10 cm above soil surface) and multiple levels of N deposition (0, 20, 40, 80 and 160 kgNha-1yr-1) on growing season CH4 and N2O emissions in the Zoige alpine peatland, Qinghai–Tibetan Plateau. We found that the elevated WT levels increased CH4 emissions, while N deposition had nonlinear effects (with stimulation at moderate levels but inhibition at higher levels). In contrast no clear pattern of the effect of WT levels on the cumulative N2O emissions was evident, while N deposition led to a consistent and linear increase (emission factor: 2.3 %–2.8 %), and this was dependent on the WT levels. Given the current N deposition in the Zoige alpine peatland (1.08–17.81 kg N ha−1), our results suggested that the CH4 and N2O emissions from the alpine peatlands could greatly increase in response to the possible doubling N deposition in the future. We believe that our results provide insights into how interactions between climate change and human disturbance will alter CH4 and N2O emissions from this globally important habitat.

Abstract:Approximately 17% of the land worldwide is considered highly vulnerable to non‐native plant invasion, which can dramatically alter nutrient cycles and influence greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in terrestrial and wetland ecosystems. However, a systematic investigation of the impact of non‐native plant invasion on GHG dynamics at a global scale has not yet been conducted, making it impossible to predict the exact biological feedback of non‐native plant invasion to global climate change. Here, we compiled 273 paired observational cases from 94 peer‐reviewed articles to evaluate the effects of plant invasion on GHG emissions and to identify the associated key drivers. Non‐native plant invasion significantly increased methane (CH4) emissions from 129 kg CH4 ha–1 yr–1 in natural wetlands to 217 kg CH4 ha–1 yr–1 in invaded wetlands. Plant invasion showed a significant tendency to increase CH4 uptakes from 2.95 to 3.64 kg CH4 ha–1 yr–1 in terrestrial ecosystems. Invasive plant species also significantly increased nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in grasslands from an average of 0.76 kg N2O ha–1 yr–1 in native sites to 1.35 kg N2O ha–1 yr–1 but did not affect N2O emissions in forests or wetlands. Soil organic carbon, mean annual air temperature (MAT), and nitrogenous deposition (N_DEP) were the key factors responsible for the changes in wetland CH4 emissions due to plant invasion. The responses of terrestrial CH4 uptake rates to plant invasion were mainly driven by MAT, soil NH4+, and soil moisture. Soil NO3–, mean annual precipitation, and N_DEP affected terrestrial N2O emissions in response to plant invasion. Our meta‐analysis not only sheds light on the stimulatory effects of plant invasion on GHG emissions from wetland and terrestrial ecosystems but also improves our current understanding of the mechanisms underlying the responses of GHG emissions to plant invasion.

Abstract:Global climate warming could affect the methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes between soils and the atmosphere, but how CH4 and N2O fluxes respond to whole-soil warming is unclear. Here, we for the first time investigated the effects of whole-soil warming on CH4 and N2O fluxes in an alpine grassland ecosystem on the Tibetan Plateau, and also studied the effects of experimental warming on CH4 and N2O fluxes across terrestrial ecosystems through a global-scale meta-analysis. The whole-soil warming (0-100cm, +4 degrees C) significantly elevated soil N2O emission by 101%, but had a minor effect on soil CH4 uptake. However, the meta-analysis revealed that experimental warming did not significantly alter CH4 and N2O fluxes, and it may be that most field warming experiments could only heat the surface soils. Moreover, the warming-induced higher plant litter and available N in soils may be the main reason for the higher N2O emission under whole-soil warming in the alpine grassland. We need to pay more attention to the long-term response of greenhouse gases (including CH4 and N2O fluxes) from different soil depths to whole-soil warming over year-round, which could help us more accurately assess and predict the ecosystem-climate feedback under realistic warming scenarios in the future.
Impact of Spartina alterniflora invasion on soil bacterial community and associated greenhouse gas emission in the Jiuduansha wetland of China

Abstract:Coastal wetlands are essential sources of greenhouse gases (GHGs) emission, and lots of them are invaded by Spartina alterniflora across different climate zones. We chose Jiuduansha wetland as a typical wetland ecosystem with minimal human activities to study the impacts and interactions between S. alterniflora invasion, soil functional microorganisms, and GHGs emission. Our findings indicated that in comparison to the mudflat and S. mariqueter habitat, the S. alterniflora invasion increased soil carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, which was highly positively related to aboveground biomass, soil organic carbon (SOC), and the ammonium‑nitrogen (NH4+-N) concentration, but negatively related to the nitrate‑nitrogen (NO3–-N) concentration. The relative abundances of soil C-decomposing bacteria increased in S. alterniflora habitat compared with S. mariqueter habitat. Compared with the P. australis habitat, S. alterniflora invasion reduced soil CO2 emission, which was negatively related to salinity. The relative abundances of soil C-fixing bacteria (phylum Chloroflexi) and functional genes (acsA-F and rbcL) decreased in S. alterniflora habitat. Moreover, the S. alterniflora invasion increased soil methane (CH4) emission compared with the S. mariqueter and P. australis habitats, which was positively related to aboveground biomass, SOC and NH4+-N concentration, and negatively related to the NO3–-N concentration. Besides, the relative abundances of CH4 oxidation functional genes were decreased in S. alterniflora habitat compared with the S. mariqueter and P. australis habitats. Meanwhile, the oxidation of CH4 to methanol was mainly regulated by mmoX gene at our study site. Thus, the soil CO2 and CH4 emissions after S. alterniflora invasion were regulated by soil environmental factors and soil C-fixing, C-decomposing, and CH4 oxidation functional microorganisms. Our results are helpful to better understand the mechanisms involved in the impacts of S. alterniflora invasions on GHG emissions in coastal wetlands.

Abstract:Rapid climate change and intensified human activities have resulted in water table lowering (WTL) and enhanced nitrogen (N) deposition in Tibetan alpine wetlands. These changes may alter the magnitude and direction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, affecting the climate impact of these fragile ecosystems. We conducted a mesocosm experiment combined with a metagenomics approach (GeoChip 5.0) to elucidate the effects of WTL (-20 cm relative to control) and N deposition (30 kg N ha-1 yr-1 ) on carbon dioxide (CO2 ), methane (CH4 ) and nitrous oxide (N2 O) fluxes as well as the underlying mechanisms. Our results showed that WTL reduced CH4 emissions by 57.4% averaged over three growing seasons compared with no-WTL plots, but had no significant effect on net CO2 uptake or N2 O flux. N deposition increased net CO2 uptake by 25.2% in comparison with no-N deposition plots and turned the mesocosms from N2 O sinks to N2 O sources, but had little influence on CH4 emissions. The interactions between WTL and N deposition were not detected in all GHG emissions. As a result, WTL and N deposition both reduced the global warming potential (GWP) of growing season GHG budgets on a 100-year time horizon, but via different mechanisms. WTL reduced GWP from 337.3 to -480.1 g CO2 -eq m-2 mostly because of decreased CH4 emissions, while N deposition reduced GWP from 21.0 to -163.8 g CO2 -eq m-2 , mainly owing to increased net CO2 uptake. GeoChip analysis revealed that decreased CH4 production potential, rather than increased CH4 oxidation potential, may lead to the reduction in net CH4 emissions, and decreased nitrification potential and increased denitrification potential affected N2 O fluxes under WTL conditions. Our study highlights the importance of microbial mechanisms in regulating ecosystem-scale GHG responses to environmental changes.

Abstract:Grassland ecosystems are sensitive to invasions by plants from other functional groups which can alter soil greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes. However, the effects of plant invasion on net GHG exchanges between soils and the atmosphere, plant production, and global warming potential (GWP) of annual grasslands is poorly understood. To evaluate the impacts of perennial forb invasions on GHG budgets of an annual grassland in China, we measured soil carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) fluxes over two years in replicated invaded (dominated by Alternanthera philoxeroides or Solidago canadensis) and non-invaded (dominated by the annual grass Eragrostis pilosa or the annual forb Sesbania cannabina) field sites. On average, soil CO2 and N2O emissions from invaded sites were 30% and 76% higher, respectively, relative to sites dominated by native species. Emissions of N2O and CO2 were especially high in Solidago and Alternanthera dominated sites, respectively. Soil CH4 emissions did not vary with plant species. On average, total biomass C of invaded sites was higher than that of the native dominated sites but this reflected the high C in Solidago dominated sites. Global warming potential (GWP) was increased by Alternanthera invasions and decreased by Solidago invasions. Plant invasions affected GWP of these annual grasslands through higher emissions of some GHGs but also sometimes higher biomass C. Together, this suggests that perennial forb invasions could change the net source or sink role of annual grasslands for GHG budgets, but the effects on GWP vary among species depending on GHG responses and C storage.
Divergent Regulating Modes of Greenhouse Gas Emissions at Different Soil Layers under Altered Precipitation Regime

Abstract:How soil microbial communities regulate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as precipitation events are “repackaged” from many small events to a few larger events has received significant attention. Previous studies have quantified the net fluxes of GHG across the soil/atmosphere interface; however, they have not investigated GHG fluxes in soil profiles under altered precipitation regimes. This study investigated the joint regulation of topsoil and subsoil microorganisms on GHG emissions under changes in precipitation regime in an alpine meadow. Severely altered precipitation regimes have led to changes in NO3–, DOC, and soil moisture among different soil layers, which can be attributed to a combination of substrate migration and changes in carbon and nitrogen mineralization rates. Topsoil microorganisms exhibit high sensitivity to severe changes in the precipitation regime, which can affect their biomass, microbial composition, and metabolic activities. In contrast, the activity of subsoil microorganisms remains relatively stable. This was likely due to the heterogeneity of dominant regulators across soil layers. Under the severely altered precipitation regime, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions significantly decreased by approximately 11.08%. This decrease was primarily due to a reduction in microbial respiration in the topsoil. The decrease in both topsoil and subsoil methane (CH4) uptake likely caused the inhibition of the CH4 sink from the surface (by approximately 11.60%). While a 1.75-fold increase in nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions under the severe changes in the precipitation regime might be primarily related to the increase in subsoil N2O emissions caused by the increasing abundance of subsoil denitrifiers, as well as the addition of subsoil nitrate content and soil moisture. This study revealed the divergent modes of microbial communities at different soil layers regulating GHG fluxes, which could guide the improvement of ecological models predicting GHG emissions in response to altered precipitation regimes.

Abstract:Fertilization and drought are two of the most important global change drivers that impacting greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Soil organisms are among the fundamental biotic drivers of biogeochemical cycles and can play critical roles in mitigating global change. However, the contributions of soil macrofauna in explaining the responses of GHG emissions to fertilization and drought remain poorly understood. Here, we designed a three-factor microcosm experiment to examine how soil macrofauna (no fauna, earthworms, and millipedes) alter the responses of CO 2 , N 2 O, and CH 4 emissions, as well as the C and N contents in response to contrasting levels of N (N 0 : without N addition, N + : N addition) and available soil water (40% and 60% of soil water holding capacity). We show that soil fauna were significant regulators of CO 2 and N 2 O emissions in response to changes in water and N availability, as supported by multiple identified statistical interactions. Millipedes were observed to reduce the positive influence of soil water availability on soil CO 2 emissions in response to the addition of N. Similarly, earthworms weakened the effects of elevated N and water availability on soil N 2 O emissions. Moreover, CH 4 emissions occurred only when millipedes were present. The structural equation models revealed that earthworms and millipedes modified soil CO 2 and N 2 O emissions through their influences on soil total dissolved nitrogen and microbial biomass carbon. Overall, this study demonstrated that soil macrofauna can notably mediate the responses of GHG emissions and soil biogeochemical cycles to global environmental changes.

Abstract:Atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) are predicted to increase as a consequence of fossil fuel emissions and the impact on biosphere–atmosphere interactions. Forest ecosystems in general, and forest soils in particular, can be sinks or sources for CO2, CH4, and N2O. Environmental studies traditionally target soil temperature and moisture as the main predictors of soil greenhouse gas (GHG) flux from different ecosystems; however, these emissions are primarily biologically driven. Thus, little is known about the degree of regulation by soil biotic vs. abiotic factors on GHG emissions, particularly under predicted increase in global temperatures, and changes in intensity and frequency of precipitation events. Here we measured net CO2, CH4 and N2O fluxes after 5 years of experimental warming (+3.4°C), and 2 years of ≈45% summer rainfall reduction, in two forest sites in a boreal–temperate ecotone under different habitat conditions (closed or open canopy) in Minnesota, USA. We evaluated the importance of microbial gene abundance and climo‐edaphic factors (soil texture, canopy, seasonality, climate, and soil physicochemical properties) driving GHG emissions. We found that changes in CO2 fluxes were predominantly determined abiotically by temperature and moisture, after accounting for bacterial abundance. Methane fluxes on the other hand, were determined both abiotically, by gas diffusivity (via soil texture) and microbially, by methanotroph pmoA gene abundance, whereas, N2O emissions showed only a strong biotic regulation via ammonia‐oxidizing bacteria amoA gene abundance. Warming did not significantly alter CO2 and CH4 fluxes after 5 years of manipulation, while N2O emissions were greater with warming under open canopy. Our findings provide evidence that soil GHG emissions result from multiple direct and indirect interactions of microbial and abiotic drivers. Overall, this study highlights the need to include both microbial and climo‐edaphic properties in predictive models in order to provide improved mechanistic understanding for the development of future mitigation strategies. Abstract:Plant invasion can significantly alter the carbon and nitrogen cycles of wetlands, which potentially affects the emission of greenhouse gases (GHGs). The extent of these effects can vary depending on several factors, including the species of invasive plants, their growth patterns, and the climatic conditions prevailing in the wetland. Understanding the global effects of plant invasion on the emission of methane (CH 4 ) and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) is crucial for the climate-smart management of wetlands. Here, we performed a global meta-analysis of 207 paired case studies that quantified the effect of non-native plant invasion on CH 4 and N 2 O emissions in tropical/sub-tropical (TS) and temperate (TE) wetlands. The average emission rate of CH 4 from the TS wetlands increased significantly from 337 to 577 kg CH 4 ha −1 yr −1 in areas where native plants had been displaced by invasive plants. Similarly, in TE wetlands, the emission rates increased from 211 to 299 kg CH 4 ha −1 yr −1 following the invasion of alien plant species. The increase in CH 4 emissions at invaded sites was attributed to the increase in plant biomass, soil organic carbon (SOC), and soil moisture (SM). The effects of plant invasion on N 2 O emissions differed between TS and TE wetlands in that there was no significant effect in TS wetlands, whereas the N 2 O emissions reduced in TE wetlands. This difference in N 2 O emissions between climate zones was attributed to the depletion of NH 4 + and NO 3 − in soils and the lower soil temperature in temperate regions. Overall, plant invasion increased the global net CH 4 emissions from natural wetlands by 10.54 Tg CH 4 yr −1 . However, there were variations in CH 4 emissions across different climatic zones, indicated by a net increase in CH 4 emissions, of 9.97 and 0.57 Tg CH 4 yr −1 in TS and TE wetlands, respectively. These findings highlight that plant invasion not only strongly stimulates the emission of CH 4 from TS wetlands, but also suppresses N 2 O emissions from TE wetlands. These novel insights immensely improve our current understanding of the effects of climatic zones on biogeochemical controlling factors that influence the production of greenhouse gases (GHGs) from wetlands following plant invasion. By analyzing the specific mechanisms by which invasive plants affect GHG emissions in different climatic zones, effective strategies can be devised to reduce GHG emissions and preserve wetland ecosystems.

The Primary Drivers of Greenhouse Gas Emissions Along the Water Table Gradient in the Zoige Alpine Peatland

Abstract:Zoige alpine peatland as the highest and largest peat swamp area in the world plays an important role in regulating global climate change and stabilizing GHG emissions, and GHG emissions are getting more and more concern due to water table decline induced by the combined effects of climate warming and digging ditches in Zoige alpine peatland. Therefore, emissions of CH4, CO2, and N2O were investigated in situ along different water table transects in Zoige peatland. Results showed that the CO2 and N2O fluxes increased along the reduced water table gradient except the lowest water table sites, while CH4 flux was decreased. Meanwhile, the global warming potential decreased from 798.6 to 430.9 g CO2 eq m− 2 h− 1 with the declined water table. Stepwise multiple regression analysis demonstrated that SOC was the primary factor explaining the variations of CO2 and N2O fluxes across different water table levels, and soil water content was the most important factor to explain the CH4 flux. Water table was the primary driver to determine the GHG fluxes, and the CO2 and N2O emissions were also dependent on the SOC variations. Overall, our results would be beneficial to understand the mechanism of water table effect on GHG emission in alpine peatland ecosystem and provide supports for alpine peatland management in the future.
Effect of In Situ Large Soil Column Translocation on CO2 and CH4 Fluxes under Two Temperate Forests of Northeastern China

Abstract:Global warming has a significant impact on soil carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) fluxes in temperate forests. However, due to a lack of field observations, limited information is available about the responses of soil CO2 and CH4 fluxes to changes in temperature during the non-growing season and throughout the year in temperate forests. The broadleaf and Korean pine mixed mature forest (MF) and adjacent secondary white birch forest (BF) at different succession stages in the Changbai mountain region in northeastern China were selected, to study the effect of in situ soil column translocation on CO2 and CH4 fluxes in temperate forests. On average, the air temperature and soil temperature at 5 cm depth under BF stands from October 2018 to October 2022 increased by 0.64 and 0.42 °C during the non-growing season and by 0.49 and 0.43 °C throughout the year, respectively, compared with those under MF stands. Based on multi-year measurements in field experiments, it was shown that during the non-growing season, fluxes of CO2 and CH4 from soil columns under MF and BF stands ranged from 0.004 to 1.175 and from 0.015 to 1.401 (averages of 0.321 and 0.387) μmol CO2 m−2 s−1, and from −1.003 to 0.048 and from −1.037 to −0.013 (averages of −0.179 and −0.250) nmol CH4 m−2 s−1, respectively, accounting for approximately 20.8% and 25.3%, and 48.8% and 69.1% of the corresponding average fluxes during the growing season. When undisturbed soil columns of MF were transferred to a BF stand, to simulate warming, the cumulative soil CO2 emissions and CH4 uptake increased by 23.5% and 15.3% during the non-growing season, and by 9.5% and 16.3% across the year, respectively. However, when soil columns of BF were transferred to a MF stand, to simulate cooling, the cumulative soil CO2 emissions decreased by 16.9% and 0.1% during the non-growing season and across the year, respectively. Upon cooling, the cumulative soil CH4 uptake decreased by 21.8% during the non-growing season but increased by 15.4% across the year. The soil temperature and moisture at 5 cm depth in soil columns could explain 84–86% of the variability in CO2 fluxes and 16–51% of the variability in CH4 fluxes under the two forest stands throughout the field measurement period. The results of the in situ soil column translocation experiments highlight that a small climate warming in nature can increase soil CO2 emissions and CH4 uptake in the temperate forests of northeastern China, particularly during the non-growing season, which should be considered when predicting soil C fluxes in the temperate forests of northeastern China under global warming scenarios.

Abstract:Freeze-thaw cycles (FTCs) and increasing nitrogen (N) availability may affect soil carbon (C) and N turnover and thus stimulate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in cold regions. However, the combined effects of FTCs and increased N availability on GHG fluxes remain unexplored, especially in high-altitude alpine meadows. We conducted an incubation study to investigate the effects of different forms and levels of N additions on soil trace gas fluxes during three FTCs in an alpine meadow on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. Our results showed that the N2O and CO2 emissions as well as CH4 uptake substantially increased during FTCs. N additions generally enhanced the freeze–thaw-related soil N2O emissions but inhibited soil respiration and CH4 oxidation. NO3–-N additions induced significantly higher cumulative N2O emissions during FTCs than NH4+-N additions. The soil respiration rates were significantly reduced with increasing levels of N additions and were positively correlated with the soil DOC and MBC contents. Soil CH4 uptake was substantially inhibited by increasing levels of NH4+-N additions, but was significantly reduced only by high levels of NO3–-N additions. Our results indicate that N addition plays an important role in affecting soil GHG fluxes during FTCs. The effects of different forms and levels of N additions on soil GHG fluxes should be considered in future estimations of GHG budget in alpine meadows under a changing climate.

Abstract:Carbon fluxes (CO2 and CH4) are important indicators of the response of alpine meadow ecosystems to global climate change. Alpine meadows on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau are sensitive to climate change. Although the temporal allocation of precipitation can vary, its intensity is expected to increase, and its frequency is expected to decrease in the future. In this study, a manipulative field experiment was conducted to investigate how carbon fluxes are altered in response to moderate and severe changes in the precipitation regime. Fluctuations in CH4 flux were large under a severely altered precipitation regime (range of −0.048–0.038 mg m−2 h−1). Severe changes in the precipitation regime significantly reduced soil CH4 uptake by approximately 54.3%. This was probably affected by the decrease in the dissolved organic carbon concentration and changes in the microbial community (mainly Gammaproteobacteria), which were induced by variation in soil water conditions under various precipitation regimes. Under moderate changes in the precipitation regime, the average value of CO2 fluxes (ecosystem respiration) was 698.21 ± 35.19 mg m−2 h−1, which was significantly decreased by 20.7% compared with the control. This likely stems from the suppression of enzyme activity (particularly α-1,4-glucosidase and β-1,4-glucosidase) and the alteration of microbial community structure in this treatment, which led to a decrease in organic matter breakdown and a reduction in the release of CO2 to the atmosphere. However, CO2 fluxes were slightly (i.e., not significantly) decreased under the severely altered precipitation regime. Such different responses of CO2 flux are probably driven by differences in microbial strategies. This study not only increases our understanding of the mechanisms underlying the adaptation of alpine meadow ecosystems to global climate change but also provides new insight into the carbon source/sink functions of alpine meadows.

Abstract:Wetland ecosystems store large amounts of carbon, and CO2 and CH4 fluxes from this ecosystem receive the double impact of climate change and human activities. Nonetheless, research on how multi-gradient warming and nitrogen and phosphorus additions affect these wetland greenhouse gas emissions is still limited, particularly in alpine wetland ecosystems. Therefore, we conducted a field experiment on the Tibetan Plateau wetlands, investigating the effects of warming and nitrogen and phosphorus additions on the CO2 and CH4 fluxes in alpine wetlands. Results indicated that warming enhanced the CO2 absorption and CH4 emission in the alpine meadow ecosystem, possibly related to changes in plant growth and microbial activity induced by warming, while we noticed that the promotion of CO2 uptake weakened with the increase in the magnitude of warming, suggesting that there may be a temperature threshold beyond which the ecosystem's capacity for carbon sequestration may be reduced. Nitrogen addition increased CH4 emission, with the effect on CO2 absorption shifting from inhibition to enhancement as the amount of applied nitrogen or phosphorus increased. The interaction between warming and nitrogen and phosphorus additions further influenced CH4 emission, exhibiting a synergistic enhancement effect. This study deepens our understanding of the greenhouse gas responses of alpine wetland ecosystems to warming and nitrogen and phosphorus additions, which is significant for predicting and managing ecosystem carbon balance under global change.
Responses of Bacterial Communities to Simulated Climate Changes in Alpine Meadow Soil of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau

Abstract:ABSTRACT The soil microbial community plays an important role in terrestrial carbon and nitrogen cycling. However, microbial responses to climate warming or cooling remain poorly understood, limiting our ability to predict the consequences of future climate changes. To address this issue, it is critical to identify microbes sensitive to climate change and key driving factors shifting microbial communities. In this study, alpine soil transplant experiments were conducted downward or upward along an elevation gradient between 3,200 and 3,800 m in the Qinghai-Tibet plateau to simulate climate warming or cooling. After a 2-year soil transplant experiment, soil bacterial communities were analyzed by pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA gene amplicons. The results showed that the transplanted soil bacterial communities became more similar to those in their destination sites and more different from those in their “home” sites. Warming led to increases in the relative abundances in Alphaproteobacteria , Gammaproteobacteria , and Actinobacteria and decreases in Acidobacteria , Betaproteobacteria , and Deltaproteobacteria , while cooling had opposite effects on bacterial communities (symmetric response). Soil temperature and plant biomass contributed significantly to shaping the bacterial community structure. Overall, climate warming or cooling shifted the soil bacterial community structure mainly through species sorting, and such a shift might correlate to important biogeochemical processes such as greenhouse gas emissions. This study provides new insights into our understanding of soil bacterial community responses to climate warming and cooling.

Abstract:Invasive Spartina alterniflora ( S. alterniflora ) has significant impacts on sediment biogeochemical cycling in the tidal wetlands of estuaries and coasts. However, the impact of exotic Spartina alterniflora invasion on greenhouse gases (GHGs) production dynamics in sediments remain limited. Here, we investigated the dynamics of sediment physicochemical properties, GHGs production rates, and microbial gene abundances in a native Cyperus malacensis habitat and three invasive S. alterniflora habitats (6-, 10-, and 14-year) in the Minjiang River Estuary, China. The methane (CH 4 ), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) production rates varied both spatially and seasonally, while microbial gene abundances (bacterial and fungal gene abundances) and organic matter (TOC and TN) only varied spatially. GHGs production rates were also characterized by higher values in surface sediment (0–10 cm) compared to subsurface sediment (10–20 cm) and by seasonal variations with higher values in summer than in winter. S. alterniflora invasion can significantly increase CH 4 and CO 2 production rates, organic matter, and microbial gene abundances ( p < 0.05). Temperature, organic matter and microbial gene abundances were the most dominating factor controlling the spatio-temporal variations of CH 4 and CO 2 production rates. Overall, our findings highlighted the significant role of S. alterniflora invasion in regulating GHGs production rates in coastal wetland sediments and provided fundamental data for estimating GHGs emissions and carbon sequestration in the complex tidal wetlands.

Abstract:Background The impacts of land use on greenhouse gases (GHGs) emissions have been extensively studied. However, the underlying mechanisms on how soil aggregate structure, soil organic carbon (SOC) and total N (TN) distributions in different soil aggregate sizes influencing carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), and nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions from alpine grassland ecosystems remain largely unexplored. Methods A microcosm experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of land use change on CO 2 and N 2 O emissions from different soil aggregate fractions. Soil samples were collected from three land use types, i.e., non-grazing natural grassland (CK), grazing grassland (GG), and artificial grassland (GC) in the Bayinbuluk alpine pastureland. Soil aggregate fractionation was performed using a wet-sieving method. The variations of soil aggregate structure, SOC, and TN in different soil aggregates were measured. The fluxes of CO 2 and N 2 O were measured by a gas chromatograph. Results Compared to CK and GG, GC treatment significantly decreased SOC (by 24.9–45.2%) and TN (by 20.6–41.6%) across all soil aggregate sizes, and altered their distributions among soil aggregate fractions. The cumulative emissions of CO 2 and N 2 O in soil aggregate fractions in the treatments of CK and GG were 39.5–76.1% and 92.7–96.7% higher than in the GC treatment, respectively. Moreover, cumulative CO 2 emissions from different soil aggregate sizes in the treatments of CK and GG followed the order of small macroaggregates (2–0.25 mm) > large macroaggregates (> 2 mm) > micro aggregates (0.25–0.053 mm) > clay +silt (< 0.053 mm), whereas it decreased with aggregate sizes decreasing in the GC treatment. Additionally, soil CO 2 emissions were positively correlated with SOC and TN contents. The highest cumulative N 2 O emission occurred in micro aggregates under the treatments of CK and GG, and N 2 O emissions among different aggregate sizes almost no significant difference under the GC treatment. Conclusions Conversion of natural grassland to artificial grassland changed the pattern of CO 2 emissions from different soil aggregate fractions by deteriorating soil aggregate structure and altering soil SOC and TN distributions. Our findings will be helpful to develop a pragmatic management strategy for mitigating GHGs emissions from alpine grassland.

Abstract:The Zoige peatland on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the largest alpine peatland in the world, is currently experiencing unprecedented water stress due to climate change and human activities. However, the consequences for emissions of greenhouse gases have not been well studied. We conducted a 40-month in situ field experiment (including deep, shallow and control water table treatments) to examine the effect of drainage on greenhouse gas emissions (CO2, CH4 and N2O). The results showed that drainage significantly increased the emission rates and the total cumulative emissions of CO2 (i.e., ecosystem respiration) and N2O, and reduced CH4 emissions. However, under drained conditions, the cumulative emissions of CO2 and N2O increased significantly during the growing season (May to September) only, whereas the cumulative emissions of CH4 decreased significantly during both the growing season and the non-growing season (October to April). In addition, drainage significantly increased the biomass of aerobic bacteria and methanotrophs. These results indicate that emissions of greenhouse gases in the Zoige peatland are sensitive to short-term drainage and that future studies should consider the response of greenhouse gas fluxes to environmental changes in the non-growing season.
Effects of litter and root inputs on soil CH 4 uptake rates and associated microbial abundances in natural temperature subalpine forests

Abstract:Climate change altered the quantities of aboveground plant litter and root input, and their effects on soil CH 4 uptake rates and underlying mechanisms remain unclear. To investigate these factors, a three-year detritus input and removal treatment (DIRT) study including six treatments (namely, CK, control; NL, litter removal; DL, double litter; NR, root exclusion; NRNL, root exclusion plus litter removal; and NRDL, root exclusion plus double litter) was conducted in broadleaf and coniferous forest subalpine forest ecosystems. The results showed that both the subalpine forest soils acted as sink for atmospheric CH 4 across all treatments, while the broadleaf forest had consistently higher CH 4 uptake rates than the coniferous forest. Based on the annual mean values, root exclusion (NR, NRNL and NRDL) significantly decreased soil CH 4 uptake rates by 35.9 %, 31.0 % and 43.4 % in the broadleaf forest and 36.7 %, 31.9 % and 40.6 % in the coniferous forest compared with CK treatments, respectively. Meanwhile, the mean soil CH 4 uptake rates were significantly reduced by 23.6 % and 17.3 % in the broadleaf forest and the coniferous forest under the DL treatments, respectively; nevertheless, the NL treatment significantly increased CH 4 uptake rates by 19.68 % and 14.4 %, respectively. The results clearly demonstrated that root exclusion exerted a greater influence on soil CH 4 uptake rates than plant litter manipulations. Correlation and redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that the separation of root exclusion treatments from aboveground plant litter manipulations was based on higher soil water content, NH 4 + -N and NO 3 − -N concentrations, and lower DOC (dissolved organic carbon) concentrations and methanotroph pmoA gene abundance. The results suggest that future alterations in aboveground plant litter and root input, particularly a reduction in root input, can exert a stronger influence on regulating soil CH 4 uptake than aboveground litter manipulations in subalpine forests with cold and humid climatic conditions in response to future climate scenarios.
