Abstract:AbstractHerein, the exposure of highly‐active nitrogen cation sites has been accomplished by photo‐driven quasi‐topological transformation of a 1,10‐phenanthroline‐5,6‐dione‐based covalent organic framework (COF), which contributes to hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) synthesis during the 2‐electron O2 photoreduction. The exposed nitrogen cation sites with photo‐enhanced Lewis acidity not only act as the electron‐transfer motor to adjust the inherent charge distribution, powering continuous and stable charge separation, and broadening visible‐light adsorption, but also providing a large number of active sites for O2 adsorption. The optimal catalyst shows a high H2O2 production rate of 11965 μmol g−1 h−1 under visible light irradiation and a remarkable apparent quantum yield of 12.9 % at 400 nm, better than most of the previously reported COF photocatalysts. This work provides new insights for designing photo‐switchable nitrogen cation sites as catalytic centers toward efficient solar to chemical energy conversion.

Abstract:The performance of photocatalytic H2O2 production is demonstrated by engineering the nitrogen sites (pyridine, pyrimidine, triazine) to regulate the species and densities of nitrogen atoms. All COFs can drive the H2O2 photocatalysis via both ORR and WOR channels, with the ORR pathway predominating. Photocatalytic H2O2 production is a green and sustainable route, but far from meeting the increasing demands of industrialization due to the rapid recombination of the photogenerated charge carriers and the sluggish reaction kinetics. Effective strategies for precisely regulating the photogenerated carrier behavior and catalytic activity to construct high‐performance photocatalysts are urgently needed. Herein, a nitrogen‐site engineering strategy, implying elaborately tuning the species and densities of nitrogen atoms, is applied for H2O2 photogeneration performance regulation. Different nitrogen heterocycles, such as pyridine, pyrimidine, and triazine units, are polymerized with trithiophene units, and five covalent organic frameworks (COFs) with distinct nitrogen species and densities on the skeletons are obtained. Fascinatingly, they photocatalyzed H2O2 production via dominated two‐electron O2 reduction processes, including O2‐O2•‒‐H2O2 and O2‐O2•‒‐O21‐H2O2 dual pathways. Just in the air and pure water, the multicomponent TTA‐TF‐COF with the maximum nitrogen densities triazine nitrogen densities exhibited the highest H2O2 production rate of 3343 μmol g−1 h−1, higher than most of other reported COFs. The theoretical calculation revealed the higher activity is due to the easy formation of O2•‒ and O21 in different catalytic process. This study gives a new insight into designing photocatalysis at atomic level.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been widely used in photocatalytic hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production due to their favorable band structure and excellent light absorption. Due to the rapid recombination rate of charge carriers, however, their applications are mainly restricted. This study presents the design and development of two highly conjugated triazine-based COFs (TBP-COF and TTP-COF) and evaluates their photocatalytic H2O2 production performance. The nitrogen-rich structures and high degrees of conjugation of TBP-COF and TTP-COF facilitate improved light absorption, promote O2 adsorption, enhance their redox power, and enable the efficient separation and transfer of photogenerated charge carriers. There is thus an increase in the photocatalytic activity for the production of H2O2. When exposed to 10 W LED visible light irradiation at a wavelength of 420 nm, the pyridine-based TTP-COF produced 4244 μmol h−1 g−1 of H2O2 from pure water in the absence of a sacrificial agent. Compared to TBP-COF (1882 μmol h−1 g−1), which has a similar structure but lacks pyridine sites, TTP-COF demonstrated nearly 2.5 times greater efficiency. Furthermore, it exhibited superior performance compared to most previously published nonmetal COF-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:A full-spectrum (300-700 nm) responsive porphyrin supramolecular photocatalyst with a theoretical solar spectrum efficiency of 44.4% is successfully constructed. For the first time, hydrogen and oxygen evolution (40.8 and 36.1 mu mol g(-1) h(-1)) is demonstrated by a porphyrin photocatalyst without the addition of any cocatalysts. The strong oxidizing performance also presents an efficient photodegradation activity that is more than ten times higher than that of g-C3N4 for the photodegradation of phenol. The high photocatalytic reduction and oxidation activity arises from a strong built-in electric field due to molecular dipoles of electron-trapping groups and the nanocrystalline structure of the supramolecular photocatalyst. The appropriate band structure of the supramolecular photocatalyst adjusted via the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy levels of the porphyrin gives rise to thermodynamic driving potential for H-2 and O-2 evolution under visible light irradiation. Controlling the energy band structure of photocatalysts via the ordered assembly of structure-designed organic molecules could provide a novel approach for the design of organic photocatalysts in energy and environmental applications.

Abstract:Noble metal-loaded semiconductor photocatalysts have attracted extensive attention in the field of photocatalytic two-electron oxygen reduction to generate H(2)O(2 )due to their high atomic utilization rate. However, the rareness and high cost of materials significantly hinder their industrial application. Here, we introduce phosphate as an electron bridge in carbon nitride (C3N5)-cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) (C3N5-YP-XCoPc) to enable the accurate transmission of photogenerated electrons to the metal Co atoms, and then excite them as catalytic centers to achieve the efficiency of a noble metal-like loaded semiconductor photocatalyst. The photocatalytic H(2)O(2 )yield of C3N5-8P-0.9CoPc is as high as 3080.3 mu mol g(-1) h(-1), which is 8.3 and 4.4 times higher than C3N5 and C3N5-0.9CoPc, respectively. Experimental and theoretical calculations demonstrate that photogenerated electrons are precisely transported to Co atoms via phosphate molecules, exciting the Co 3d orbitals to higher energy levels, thereby making the Co atoms catalytic centers and enhancing their ability to adsorb and activate O2. Meanwhile, phosphate passivated the adsorption of H2O2 on C3N5-8P-0.9CoPc and inhibited the in situ decomposition of H2O2. This work opens up new perspectives for the development of efficient photocatalysts, while demonstrating the potential of small molecules as bridging mediators.
Regulating Relative Nitrogen Locations of Diazine Functionalized Covalent Organic Frameworks for Overall H2 O2 Photosynthesis.

Abstract:Nitrogen-heterocycle-based covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are considered promising candidates for the overall photosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). However, the effects of the relative nitrogen locations remain obscured and photocatalytic performances of COFs need to be further improved. Herein, a collection of COFs functionalized by various diazines including pyridazine, pyrimidine, and pyrazine have been judiciously designed and synthesized for photogeneration of H2O2 without sacrificial agents. Compared with pyrimidine and pyrazine, pyridazine embedded in TpDz tends to stabilize endoperoxide intermediate species, leading toward the more efficient direct 2e(-) oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) pathway. Benefiting from the effective electron-hole separation, low charge transfer resistance, and high-efficiency ORR pathway, an excellent production rate of 7327 mu molg(-1)h(-1) and a solar-to-chemical conversion (SCC) value of 0.62% has been achieved by TpDz, which ranks one of the best COF-based photocatalysts. This work might shed fresh light on the rational design of functional COFs targeting photocatalysts in H2O2 production.

Abstract:The study of hydrogen peroxide production by O 2 reduction reaction using covalent organic framework (COF) photocatalysts has attracted extensive attention in recent years. However, there are still great challenges in accurately controlling their structures to achieve rapid carrier separation and efficient O 2 reduction. Based on this, we constructed the A1 -D -A2 COF photocatalytic material (TT-DTDA-COF) with asymmetric dual acceptor sites by connecting thieno [3,2-b] thiophene, benzene, and triazine as the basic units through imine bonds. Under the synergistic effect of thieno [3,2-b] thiophene and triazine electron acceptors, the separation and transfer efficiency of TT-DTDA-COF photogenerated carriers was significantly enhanced. At the same time, according to the in -situ infrared and DFT calculation results, it was found that these two acceptor units served as O 2 reduction sites, which realized the multi -site adsorption reduction of O 2 , and effectively enhanced the efficiency of photocatalytic O 2 reduction to H 2 O 2 . The experimental results showed that the H 2 O 2 generation rate of TT-DTDACOF with A1 -D -A2 dual receptor structure was 1302 mu mol.g - 1 .h - 1 under visible light irradiation, which was 3.4 times higher than that of TB-DTDA-COF with single receptor D -A structure and higher than that of most of the materials reported so far. This study provides a new idea for accurately designing COF-based photocatalysts to achieve efficient O 2 reduction to produce H 2 O 2 .

Abstract:Photocatalytic oxygen reduction to produce hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a promising route to providing oxidants for various industrial applications. However, the lack of well-designed photocatalysts for efficient overall H2O2 production in pure water has impeded ongoing research and practical thrusts. Here we present a cyanide-based covalent organic framework (TBTN-COFs) combining 2,4,6-trimethylbenzene-1,3,5-tricarbonitrile (TBTN) and Benzotrithiophene-2,5,8-Tricarbaldehyde (BTT) building blocks with water-affinity and charge-separation. The ultrafast intramolecular electron transfer (<500 fs) and prolonged excited state lifetime (748 ps) can be realized by TBTN-COF, resulting in a hole accumulated BTT and electron-rich TBTN building block. Under one sun, the 11013 μmol h-1 g-1 yield rate of H2O2 can be achieved without any sacrificial agent, outperforming most previous reports. Furthermore, the DFT calculation and in-situ DRIFTS spectrums suggesting a Yeager-type absorption of *O2 intermediate in the cyanide active site, which prohibits the formation of superoxide radical and revealing a favored H2O2 production pathway.

Abstract:A controllable activation of n → π* electronic transition is presented to boost the photocatalytic H2O2 evolution in ionic carbon nitrides through the simultaneous introduction of structural distortions and defect sites. The best catalyst (2%Ox‐KPHI) shows an apparent quantum yield of 41% at 410 nm without the need for any cocatalysts, outperforming most previously reported carbon nitride‐based photocatalysts. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a crucial chemical used in numerous industrial applications, yet its manufacturing relies on the energy‐demanding anthraquinone process. Solar‐driven synthesis of H2O2 is gaining traction as a promising research area, providing a sustainable method for its production. Herein, a controllable activation of n → π* electronic transition is presented to boost the photocatalytic H2O2 evolution in ionic carbon nitrides. This enhancement is achieved through the simultaneous introduction of structural distortions and defect sites (─C ≡ N groups and N vacancies) into the KPHI framework. The optimal catalyst (2%Ox‐KPHI) reached an apparent quantum yield of 41% at 410 nm without the need for any cocatalysts, outperforming most previously reported carbon nitride‐based photocatalysts. Extensive experimental characterizations and theoretical calculations confirm that a corrugated configuration and the presence of defects significantly broaden the light absorption profile, improve carrier separation and migration, promote O2 adsorption, and lower the energy barriers for H2O2 desorption. Transient absorption spectroscopy indicates that the enhanced photocatalytic performance of 2%Ox‐KPHI is largely attributed to the preferential migration of electrons at defect sites over extended timescales, following the diffusion of geminate carriers across the PHI sheets.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) have been demonstrated as promising photocatalysts for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production. However, the construction of COFs with new active sites, high photoactivity, and wide-range light absorption for efficient H2O2 production remains challenging. Herein, we present the synthesis of a novel azobenzene-bridged 2D COF (COF-TPT-Azo) with excellent performance on photocatalytic H2O2 production under alkaline conditions. Notably, although COF-TPT-Azo differs by only one atom (-N=N- vs. -C=N-) from its corresponding imine-linked counterpart (COF-TPT-TPA), the COF-TPT-Azo exhibits a significantly narrower band gap, enhanced charge transport, and prompted photoactivity. Remarkably, when employed as a metal-free photocatalyst, COF-TPT-Azo achieves a high photocatalytic H2O2 production rate up to 1498 μmol g-1 h-1 at pH =11, which is 7.9 times higher than that of COF-TPT-TPA. Further density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the -N=N- linkages are the active sites for photocatalysis. This work provides new prospects for developing high-performance COF-based photocatalysts.
Enhanced pre-sensitization in metal-free covalent organic frameworks promoting hydrogen peroxide photosynthesis

Abstract:Pre-sensitization caused by the intersystem crossing (ISC) of the photosensitizers for selective generation of singlet state oxygen (1O2) plays a crucial role in 2-electron O2 photoreduction toward high-yield hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which has long been ignored. Here, the metal-free, crystalline imine-linked triazine covalent organic frameworks with cyano group-substituted (CN-COF) or non-substituted (H-COF) edge units have been developed to regulate the pre-sensitization. The incorporation of cyano group endowed CN-COF with a strong D-π-A structure, which caused a broad visible-light responsive absorption and dramatically increased charge separation, while providing highly stable photogenerated electrons. Such collaborative effect facilitated the ISC process from singlet to triplet excited states, which enabled the activation of O2 from ·O2 − (H-COF) to 1O2 (CN-COF) under visible light irradiation, resulting in significantly improved activity and selectivity for H2O2 production. The CN-COF exhibited a high H2O2 yield rate of 2623 μmol h−1 g−1, and a remarkable apparent quantum efficiency of 9.8 % at 420 nm with an excellent selectivity of 94 %. This work suggests a promising cyanation approach to enhance the photosensitization of O2 to 1O2 based on metal-free organic semiconductors toward efficient O2-to-H2O2 photosynthesis.

Custom‐Design of Strong Electron/Proton Extractor on COFs for Efficient Photocatalytic H2O2 Production

Abstract:The development of photocatalysts with continuous electron extraction and rapid proton transfer could kinetically accelerate the artificial photosynthesis, but remains a challenge. Herein, we report the topology-guided synthesis of a high-crystalline triazine covalent organic framework (COF) decorated by uniformly distributed polar oxygen functional groups (sulfonic group or carboxyl) as the strong electron/proton extractor for efficient photocatalytic H2O2 production. It was found that the polarity-based proton transfer as well as electron enrichment in as-obtained COFs played a crucial role in improving the H2O2 photosynthesis efficiency (i.e., with an activity order of sulfonic acid- (SO3H-COF) > carboxyl- (COOH-COF) > hydrogen- (H-COF) functionalized COFs). The strong polar sulfonic acid group in the high-crystalline SO3H-COF triggered a well-oriented built-in electric field and more hydrophilic surface, which serves as an efficient carrier extractor enabling a continuous transportation of the photogenerated electrons and interfacial proton to the active sites (i.e., C atoms linked to -SO3H group). As-accelerated proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET), together with the stabilized O2 adsorption finally leads to the highest H2O2 production rate of 4971 μmol g-1 h-1 under visible light irradiation. Meanwhile, a quantum yield of 15% at 400 nm is obtained, superior to most reported COF-based photocatalysts.

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) can be used as photocatalysts for the direct photosynthesis of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) from oxygen, water and sunlight. However, their highly symmetric structure can lead to weak adsorption of O 2 and, therefore, unsatisfactory photocatalytic performance. Here we explore the local asymmetric electron distribution induced by Pauli and electron–electron repulsion in COFs to construct localized bonding sites for O 2 species, which promotes photocatalytic H 2 O 2 production. Experimental results and theoretical calculations reveal that TAPT–FTPB COFs (where TAPT is 1,3,5-tris-(4-aminophenyl) triazine and FTPB is 5-(5-formylthiophen-2-yl)thiophene-2-carbaldehyde) with an asymmetric electron distribution show strong O 2 adsorption interaction and a record-breaking solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency of 1.22% for direct photosynthesis of H 2 O 2 from oxygen and water, which is higher than in the photosynthesis of plants (~0.1%). A flow-type photocatalytic microreactor integrated with TAPT–FTPB COFs exhibits 100% sterilization efficiency for killing bacteria and 97.8% conversion for photocatalytic 2-thiophene methylamine coupling. This work reports a strategy for manipulating the local electron distribution in COFs, opening the door for research on the rational design of high-performance photocatalysis with a local asymmetric electron distribution.

Abstract:Photocatalytic two-electron oxygen reduction to produce high-value hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is gaining popularity as a promising avenue of research. However, structural evolution mechanisms of catalytically active sites in the entire photosynthetic H 2 O 2 system remains unclear and seriously hinders the development of highly-active and stable H 2 O 2 photocatalysts. Herein, we report a high-loading Ni single-atom photocatalyst for efficient H 2 O 2 synthesis in pure water, achieving an apparent quantum yield of 10.9% at 420 nm and a solar-to-chemical conversion efficiency of 0.82%. Importantly, using in situ synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy we directly observe that initial Ni-N 3 sites dynamically transform into high-valent O 1 -Ni-N 2 sites after O 2 adsorption and further evolve to form a key *OOH intermediate before finally forming HOO-Ni-N 2 . Theoretical calculations and experiments further reveal that the evolution of the active sites structure reduces the formation energy barrier of *OOH and suppresses the O=O bond dissociation, leading to improved H 2 O 2 production activity and selectivity.

Abstract:The single Pt atoms are stabilized on TCOF through three‐coordinated N1‐Pt‐C2 sites, which show excellent photocatalytic activity toward H2 production coupled with benzylamine oxidation. Single Pt atoms are anchored into TCOF via photocatalytic reduction method at subzero temperature. The single Pt atoms are stabilized on TCOF through three‐coordinated C2‐Pt‐N1 sites. TCOF‐Pt SA3 shows excellent photocatalytic activity toward H2 production coupled with benzylamine oxidation. The strong metal–support interactions between Pt and TCOF promote the exciton dissociation and the charge carriers separation. In photocatalysis, reducing the exciton binding energy and boosting the conversion of excitons into free charge carriers are vital to enhance photocatalytic activity. This work presents a facile strategy of engineering Pt single atoms on a 2D hydrazone‐based covalent organic framework (TCOF) to promote H2 production coupled with selective oxidation of benzylamine. The optimised TCOF‐Pt SA photocatalyst with 3 wt% Pt single atom exhibited superior performance to TCOF and TCOF‐supported Pt nanoparticle catalysts. The production rates of H2 and N‐benzylidenebenzylamine over TCOF‐Pt SA3 are 12.6 and 10.9 times higher than those over TCOF, respectively. Empirical characterisation and theoretical simulation showed that the atomically dispersed Pt is stabilised on the TCOF support through the coordinated N1‐Pt‐C2 sites, thereby induing the local polarization and improving the dielectric constant to reach the low exciton binding energy. These phenomena led to the promotion of exciton dissociation into electrons and holes and the acceleration of the separation and transport of photoexcited charge carriers from bulk to the surface. This work provides new insights into the regulation of exciton effect for the design of advanced polymer photocatalysts.

Abstract:Developing photocatalysts capable of visible-light-driven water splitting to produce clean hydrogen (H2) is one of the premier challenges for solar energy conversion into clean and sustainable fuels. Inspired from the structure feature of photosystem I in nature, we have designed and synthesized a series of robust covalent organic frameworks (NKCOFs = Nankai University COFs) based on electric donor–acceptor moieties, in which the electron-donor group of pyrene can be used for harvesting light. Meanwhile, benzothiadiazole with different functional groups was introduced as an electron acceptor to tune the light-adsorption ability of COFs. Notably, the activity of NKCOF-108 for photochemical H2 evolution under visible light was among the highest in COFs without hybridization with other materials. We attribute the high hydrogen evolution rate of NKCOF-108 to its distinct structural features and wide visible-light-response range. The highly ordered layered structure ensures that sufficient active sites are accessible for H2 production, and the donor–acceptor design can promote the separation of photogenerated carriers. Our findings have provided an effective strategy to design photocatalysts for light-driven H2 evolution.

Abstract:The photocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) towards hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a promising but challenging alternative to the industrial anthraquinone process. Crystalline porous covalent organic frameworks (COFs), a new generation of semiconductors, have attracted significant attention because they possess broad visible-light harvesting, tunable energy levels, and facile separation and migration of photogenerated charge pairs. The modulation of the energy levels of COFs could facilitate charge transport, resulting in better photocatalytic performance. Herein, the π-conjugation system of COFs was extended via a post-sulfurization process, leading to a considerably enhanced photocatalytic activity. Along with the sulfurization process, imine-linked COFs were converted into thiazole-linked COFs to extend the conjugation structure of COFs in the x and y directions, resulting in a higher transport of electrons. The thiazole-linked 4PE-N-S presents the best photocatalytic H2O2 generation performance with a rate of 1574 μmol g−1 h−1, which is about 5.8 and 3.7 times higher than that of imine-linked4PE-N and 4PE-TT, respectively.Our findings provide new prospects for the design and synthesis of highly active organic photocatalysts for solar-to-chemical energy conversion.

Abstract:Abstract Solar-driven photosynthesis is a sustainable process for the production of hydrogen peroxide, the efficiency of which is plagued by side reactions. Metal-free covalent organic frameworks (COFs) that can form suitable intermediates and inhibit side reactions show great promise to photo-synthesize H 2 O 2 . However, the insufficient formation and separation/transfer of photogenerated charges in such materials restricts the efficiency of H 2 O 2 production. Herein, we provide a strategy for the design of donor-acceptor COFs to greatly boost H 2 O 2 photosynthesis. We demonstrate that the optimal intramolecular polarity of COFs, achieved by using suitable amounts of phenyl groups as electron donors, can maximize the free charge generation, which leads to high H 2 O 2 yield rates (605 μmol g −1 h −1 ) from water, oxygen and visible light without sacrificial agents. Combining in-situ characterization with computational calculations, we describe how the triazine N-sites with optimal N 2p states play a crucial role in H 2 O activation and selective oxidation into H 2 O 2 . We further experimentally demonstrate that H 2 O 2 can be efficiently produced in tap, river or sea water with natural sunlight and air for water decontamination.

Single Pt Atoms Confined into a Metal–Organic Framework for Efficient Photocatalysis

Abstract:It is highly desirable yet remains challenging to improve the dispersion and usage of noble metal cocatalysts, beneficial to charge transfer in photocatalysis. Herein, for the first time, single Pt atoms are successfully confined into a metal–organic framework (MOF), in which electrons transfer from the MOF photosensitizer to the Pt acceptor for hydrogen production by water splitting under visible‐light irradiation. Remarkably, the single Pt atoms exhibit a superb activity, giving a turnover frequency of 35 h−1, ≈30 times that of Pt nanoparticles stabilized by the same MOF. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy further unveils that the single Pt atoms confined into the MOF provide highly efficient electron transfer channels and density functional theory calculations indicate that the introduction of single Pt atoms into the MOF improves the hydrogen binding energy, thus greatly boosting the photocatalytic H2 production activity.
Protonation of an Imine‐linked Covalent Organic Framework for Efficient H2O2 Photosynthesis under Visible Light up to 700 nm

Abstract:Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are promising photocatalysts for H2O2 production from water via oxygen reduction reactions (ORR). The design of COFs for efficient H2O2 production indubitably hinges on an in-depth understanding of their ORR mechanisms. In this work, taking an imine-linked COF as an example, we demonstrate that protonation of the functional units such as imine, amine, and triazine, is a highly efficient strategy to upgrade the activity levels for H2O2 synthesis. The protonation not only extends the light absorption of the COF but also provides proton sources that directly participate in H2O2 generation. Notably, the protonation simplifies the reaction pathways of ORR to H2O2, i.e. from an indirect superoxide radical ([[EQUATION]]) mediated route to a direct one-step two-electron route. Theoretical calculations confirm that the protonation favors H2O2 synthesis due to easy access of protons near the reaction sites that removes the energy barrier for generating *OOH intermediate. These findings not only extend the mechanistic insight into H2O2 photosynthesis but also provide a rational guideline for the design and upgradation of efficient COFs.
