Abstract:Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect at present. In recent years, the application of 3D printing in the diagnosis and treatment of CHD has been widely recognized, which presents CHD lesions in 3D solid model and provides a better understanding of the anatomy of CHD. In the future, 3D printing technology would improve the surgical proficiency, shorten the operation time, reduce the occurrence of perioperative complications, and create more personalized cardiovascular implants, therefore promote the precision of diagnosis and treatment for congenital heart disease. This article reviews the application of 3D printing technology in preoperative planning, intraoperative navigation and personalized implants of CHD, in surgical training and medical education, as well as in promoting doctor-patient communication and better understanding their condition for patients.

Abstract:Breakthrough pain (BTP) is experienced by many patients being treated with opioids for the management of chronic persistent pain. Control of BTP has been problematic since, until recently, the pharmacokinetics of older treatments was largely incompatible with the onset and duration of these pain episodes. Newer agents are now available that better approximate the timing of BTP episodes, and their use is increasingly being integrated into opioid-based pain management strategies. Successful management of BTP can improve treatment satisfaction and the quality of life of patients with chronic persistent pain of both cancer and noncancer origins. This article reviews the types of BTP, the therapeutic options available to manage BTP, and the tools designed to detect and minimize the risk of aberrant drug-related behaviors potentially associated with opioid medications.
Application of three-dimensional printing in plastic surgery: a bibliometric analysis

Abstract:Recent years have seen the publication of numerous papers on the application of three-dimensional (3D) printing in plastic surgery. Despite this growing interest, a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the field has yet to be conducted. To address this gap, we undertook a bibliometric study to map out the knowledge structure and identify research hotspots related to 3D printing in plastic surgery. We analyzed publications from 1995 to 2024, found in the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC), utilizing tools such as VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and the R package "bibliometrix". Our analysis included 1,057 documents contributed by 5,545 authors from 1,620 organizations across 71 regions, and these were published in 400 journals. We observed a steady growth in annual publications, with Europe, Asia, North America, and Oceania leading in research output. Notably, Shanghai Jiao Tong University emerged as a primary research institution in this domain. The Journal of Craniofacial Surgery and Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery have made significant contributions to the field, with Thieringer, Florian M being the most prolific and frequently cited author. Key areas of focus include medical education and surgical procedures, with "3D printing", "virtual surgical planning" and "reconstructive/orthognathic surgery" highlighted as future research hotspots. Our study provides a detailed bibliometric analysis, revealing the evolution and progress of 3D printing technologies in plastic surgery. As these technologies continue to advance, their impact on clinical practice and patient lives is expected to be profound.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) printing has been increasingly used in medicine with applications in many different fields ranging from orthopaedics and tumours to cardiovascular disease. Realistic 3D models can be printed with different materials to replicate anatomical structures and pathologies with high accuracy. 3D printed models generated from medical imaging data acquired with computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging or ultrasound augment the understanding of complex anatomy and pathology, assist preoperative planning and simulate surgical or interventional procedures to achieve precision medicine for improvement of treatment outcomes, train young or junior doctors to gain their confidence in patient management and provide medical education to medical students or healthcare professionals as an effective training tool. This article provides an overview of patient-specific 3D printed models with a focus on the applications in cardiovascular disease including: 3D printed models in congenital heart disease, coronary artery disease, pulmonary embolism, aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection, and aortic valvular disease. Clinical value of the patient-specific 3D printed models in these areas is presented based on the current literature, while limitations and future research in 3D printing including bioprinting of cardiovascular disease are highlighted.

Abstract:Statement of problem: Three-dimensional (3D) printing has had extensive applications across dentistry, but a comprehensive bibliometric analysis relating to the application of 3D printing in dentistry is lacking. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to conduct a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of the scientific literature concerning the application of 3D printing in dentistry from 2012 to 2023. Material and methods: The literature search was conducted in the Web of Science Core Collection Database. The retrieved literature data were downloaded as plain text file in "full record and cited references" format, with software programs (VOSviewer, CiteSpace, Biblioshiny, RStudio, Carrot2, and Microsoft Excel) used for bibliometric analysis and quantitative assessment. Results: The bibliometric analysis incorporated 1911 publications. Revilla-León, Marta was the most productive author. Zurich University had the highest number of publications and citations. The United States dominated the research landscape with the highest publication volume and H-index. The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry was the leading journal in both publication volume and citation frequency. Co-occurrence analysis of keyword and co-cited analysis of reference indicated a robust research environment, characterized by a strong focus on the pursuit of accuracy in dental restorative solutions, biocompatibility of materials, and clinical applications. Conclusions: Research on 3D printing in the field of dentistry continues to grow. Collaborations with leading organizations and countries have been established, with Revilla-León, Marta et al playing a pivotal role. Top journals represented included the Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry and Dental Materials. Main research domain resided in prosthodontics and implantology. Hot research topics included improvements in accuracy, dental materials, and clinical applications centered on implant guide design.

Abstract:Abstract 3D printing as a means of fabrication has seen increasing applications in medicine in the last decade, becoming invaluable for cardiovascular applications. This rapidly developing technology has had a significant impact on cardiovascular research, its clinical translation and education. It has expanded our understanding of the cardiovascular system resulting in better devices, tools and consequently improved patient outcomes. This review discusses the latest developments and future directions of generating medical replicas (‘phantoms’) for use in the cardiovascular field, detailing the end-to-end process from medical imaging to capture structures of interest, to production and use of 3D printed models. We provide comparisons of available imaging modalities and overview of segmentation and post-processing techniques to process images for printing, detailed exploration of latest 3D printing methods and materials, and a comprehensive, up-to-date review of milestone applications and their impact within the cardiovascular domain across research, clinical use and education. We then provide an in-depth exploration of future technologies and innovations around these methods, capturing opportunities and emerging directions across increasingly realistic representations, bioprinting and tissue engineering, and complementary virtual and mixed reality solutions. The next generation of 3D printing techniques allow patient-specific models that are increasingly realistic, replicating properties, anatomy and function.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting is an advanced tissue engineering technique that has received a lot of interest in the past years. We aimed to highlight the characteristics of articles on 3D bioprinting, especially in terms of research hotspots and focus. Publications related to 3D bioprinting from 2007 to 2022 were acquired from the Web of Science Core Collection database. We have used VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and R-bibliometrix to perform various analyses on 3,327 published articles. The number of annual publications is increasing globally, a trend expected to continue. The United States and China were the most productive countries with the closest cooperation and the most research and development investment funds in this field. Harvard Medical School and Tsinghua University are the top-ranked institutions in the United States and China, respectively. Dr. Anthony Atala and Dr. Ali Khademhosseini, the most productive researchers in 3D bioprinting, may provide cooperation opportunities for interested researchers. Tissue Engineering Part A contributed the largest publication number, while Frontiers in Bioengineering and Biotechnology was the most attractive journal with the most potential. As for the keywords in 3D bioprinting, Bio-ink, Hydrogels (especially GelMA and Gelatin), Scaffold (especially decellularized extracellular matrix), extrusion-based bioprinting, tissue engineering, and in vitro models (organoids particularly) are research hotspots analyzed in the current study. Specifically, the research topics "new bio-ink investigation," "modification of extrusion-based bioprinting for cell viability and vascularization," "application of 3D bioprinting in organoids and in vitro model" and "research in personalized and regenerative medicine" were predicted to be hotspots for future research.

Abstract:Background: Applying 3D printed bioink to bone tissue engineering is an emerging technology for restoring bone tissue defects. This study aims to evaluate the application of 3D printing bioink in bone tissue engineering from 2010 to 2022 through bibliometric analysis, and to predict the hotspots and developing trends in this field. Methods: We retrieved publications from Web of Science from 2010 to 2022 on 8 January 2023. We examined the retrieved data using the bibliometrix package in R software, and VOSviewer and CiteSpace were used for visualizing the trends and hotspots of research on 3D printing bioink in bone tissue engineering. Results: We identified 682 articles and review articles in this field from 2010 to 2022. The journal Biomaterials ranked first in the number of articles published in this field. In 2016, an article published by Hölzl, K in the Biofabrication journal ranked first in number of citations. China ranked first in number of articles published and in single country publications (SCP), while America surpassed China to rank first in multiple country publications (MCP). In addition, a collaboration network analysis showed tight collaborations among China, America, South Korea, Netherlands, and other countries, with the top 10 major research affiliations mostly from these countries. The top 10 high-frequency words in this field are consistent with the field's research hotspots. The evolution trend of the discipline indicates that most citations come from Physics/Materials/Chemistry journals. Factorial analysis plays an intuitive role in determining research hotspots in this sphere. Keyword burst detection shows that chitosan and endothelial cells are emerging research hotspots in this field. Conclusion: This bibliometric study maps out a fundamental knowledge structure including countries, affiliations, authors, journals and keywords in this field of research from 2010 to 2022. This study fills a gap in the field of bibliometrics and provides a comprehensive perspective with broad prospects for this burgeoning research area.

Innovations: Technology and Techniques in Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery

Abstract:Innovations, Ahead of Print. Objective:Three-dimensional printing (3DP), or additive fabrication, is a process in which a physical 3D model is created using a multitude of 2-dimensional images. This process has been applied to numerous surgical subspecialties with growing interest for the use of 3DP in adult structural heart disease. This scoping review evaluates the use of 3DP in transcatheter and surgical aortic and mitral valve interventions as well as left atrial appendage occlusion in terms of its practical and clinical application.Methods:Articles were identified through PubMed and Embase using MeSH search terms as well as independent searches. A total of 645 articles were screened, and 37 were retained for qualitative analysis.Results:Operative planning was coded in 100% of articles, complication prevention in 43%, medical education in 5.4%, patient education in 0%, and simulation in 5.4%.Conclusions:The main uses of 3DP in acquired structural heart disease are centered around operative planning and complication prevention, with moderate use regarding surgical simulation and infrequent use regarding medical and/or patient education. Although patient anatomy varies greatly, deploying 3DP as a large-scale tool remains a possibility. The more 3D models are made, the more can be learned about demographic subsets of patient populations. Due to the lack of standard operating procedures for the creation of 3DP models, the cost-effectiveness of these models is hard to determine and likely center specific. More research into this facet could inform centers that wish to implement this tool.

Abstract:3D printing has shown great promise in medical applications with increased reports in the literature. Patient-specific 3D printed heart and vascular models replicate normal anatomy and pathology with high accuracy and demonstrate superior advantages over the standard image visualizations for improving understanding of complex cardiovascular structures, providing guidance for surgical planning and simulation of interventional procedures, as well as enhancing doctor-to-patient communication. 3D printed models can also be used to optimize CT scanning protocols for radiation dose reduction. This review article provides an overview of the current status of using 3D printing technology in cardiovascular disease. Limitations and barriers to applying 3D printing in clinical practice are emphasized while future directions are highlighted.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology in congenital cardiology and cardiac surgery has experienced a rapid development over the last decade. In presence of complex cardiac and extra-cardiac anatomies, the creation of a physical, patient-specific model is attractive to most clinicians. However, at the present time, there is still a lack of strong scientific evidence of the benefit of 3D models in clinical practice and only qualitative evaluation of the models has been used to investigate their clinical use. 3D models can be printed in rigid or flexible materials, and the original size can be augmented depending on the application the models are needed for. The most common applications of 3D models at present include procedural planning of complex surgical or interventional cases, in vitro simulation for research purposes, training and communication with patients and families. The aim of this pictorial review is to describe the basic principles of this technology and present its current and future applications.

Abstract:3D printing has been applied to multiple areas since 1980. Biomedical applications have grown significantly and become the mainstream of 3D printing applications. In this review, we elucidated the publication distribution of biomedical 3D printing using the CAS Content Collection. From 2010 to 2021, journal and patent publications grew steadily, except for the decline in patent publications in 2021. In general, journal publications are higher than patents. There are approximately 90 countries participating in the 3D printing application in this field. We are reporting the publication distributions related to the following categories: (1) four major techniques: powder bed fusion, extrusion, jetting, and photopolymerization; (2) substances: polymers and inorganic substances; (3) biomedical fields: tissue/organs, orthopedic/prosthetic, pharmaceutical, and others. We investigated the correlation between these search terms and revealed the co-occurrence of the concepts appearing in publications related to 3D printing in biomedical applications. This review provides an overview of the current advancement and trends of 3D printing applications in the biomedical area.

Abstract:Background: Three-dimensional printing is an additive manufacturing method that builds objects from digitally generated computational models. Core technologies behind three-dimensional printing are evolving rapidly with major advances in materials, resolution, and speed that enable greater realism and higher accuracy. These improvements have led to novel applications of these processes in the medical field. Methods: The process of going from a medical image data set (computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasound) to a physical three-dimensional print includes several steps that are described. Medical images originate from Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine files or data sets, the current standard for storing and transmitting medical images. Via Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine manipulation software packages, a segmentation process, and manual intervention by an expert user, three-dimensional digital and printed models can be constructed in great detail. Results: Cardiovascular medicine is one of the fastest growing applications for medical three-dimensional printing. The technology is more frequently being used for patient and clinician education, preprocedural planning, and medical device design and prototyping. We report on three case studies, describing how our three-dimensional printing has contributed to the care of cardiac patients at the University of Minnesota. Conclusion: Medical applications of computational three-dimensional modeling and printing are already extensive and growing rapidly and are routinely used for visualizing complex anatomies from patient imaging files to plan surgeries and create surgical simulators. Studies are needed to determine whether three-dimensional printed models are cost effective and can consistently improve clinical outcomes before they become part of routine clinical practice.

Abstract:Research interest in three-dimensional (3D) printing has been greatly aroused since 1990 due to its outstanding merits, such as freedom of design, mass customization, waste minimization and fast prototyping complex structures. To formally elaborate the research status of the 3D printing field, a bibliometric analysis is applied to evaluate the related publications from 1990 to 2020 based on the Science Citation Index Expanded database and Social Science Citation Index database. The overview with detailed discussions is cataloged by keywords, citation, h-index, year, journal, institution, country, author, patent and review. The statistical results show that the United States plays a dominant role in this research field, followed by China and the UK. Singapore is the most productive country with the highest average citations per publication (ACPP), and the second most cooperative country. Among all the institutions, Chinese Academy of Sciences is most productive, and Harvard University has the highest ACPP and h-index. Among all the journals, Materials ranks first in the number of publications in this field. The most attractive research area is “Materials science, Multidisciplinary”, with 4053 publications. Moreover, the major hot topics derived from authors’ keywords are “3D printing”, “additive manufacturing” and “tissue engineering”. Commercial and medical applications appear to be the initial driving force and end goal for the development of the 3D printing technology.
Three-dimensional printing in congenital heart disease: A systematic review

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) printing has shown great promise in medicine with increasing reports in congenital heart disease (CHD). This systematic review aims to analyse the main clinical applications and accuracy of 3D printing in CHD, as well as to provide an overview of the software tools, time and costs associated with the generation of 3D printed heart models. A search of different databases was conducted to identify studies investigating the application of 3D printing in CHD. Studies based on patient's medical imaging datasets were included for analysis, while reports on in vitro phantom or review articles were excluded from the analysis. A total of 28 studies met selection criteria for inclusion in the review. More than half of the studies were based on isolated case reports with inclusion of 1-12 cases (61%), while 10 studies (36%) focused on the survey of opinion on the usefulness of 3D printing by healthcare professionals, patients, parents of patients and medical students, and the remaining one involved a multicentre study about the clinical value of 3D printed models in surgical planning of CHD. The analysis shows that patient-specific 3D printed models accurately replicate complex cardiac anatomy, improve understanding and knowledge about congenital heart diseases and demonstrate value in preoperative planning and simulation of cardiac or interventional procedures, assist surgical decision-making and intra-operative orientation, and improve patient-doctor communication and medical education. The cost of 3D printing ranges from USD 55 to USD 810. This systematic review shows the usefulness of 3D printed models in congenital heart disease with applications ranging from accurate replication of complex cardiac anatomy and pathology to medical education, preoperative planning and simulation. The additional cost and time required to manufacture the 3D printed models represent the limitations which need to be addressed in future studies.

Abstract:Three-dimensional（3 D） printing is a novel promising technology based on 3 D imaging and layer-by-layer additive fabrication.It has a profound influence on all aspects of our lives and is playing an increasing important role in many areas including engineering, manufacturing, art, education and medicine. "3 D bioprinting" has been put forward with the technical progress in 3 D printing and might be a possible way to solve the serious problem of human organ shortage in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Many research groups flung them into this area and have already made some gratifying achievements.However, it is a long way to fabricate a live organ. Many elements lead to the limitation of 3 D bioprinting. This review introduces the background and development history of 3 D bioprinting, compares different approaches of 3 D bioprinting and illustrates the key factors of the printing process. Meanwhile, this review also points out existing challenges of 3 D bioprinting and has a great prospect. Some points proposed in this review might be served as reference for the research of this field.

Abstract:Since 1989, three-dimensional (3D) printing has developed rapidly in biomedical engineering because it is individually customizable. By printing medical products at clinics, this powerful tool can be used by doctors, which will enhance the response to surgery and increase the creative freedom of surgeons. In this article, we reviewed the progress of 3D printing in biomedicine with particular emphasis on the types of 3D printing methods that are most suitable for the clinical application, and proposed the concept of Printing@clinic. The four levels of Printing@clinic are discussed, from surgical implants to direct printing during surgery. Three major applications of Printing@clinic, which could be rapidly implemented in the clinical setting, are fabricating prosthesis to assist with surgeries, printing 3D implantable scaffolds, and bioprinting for tissue repair. We believe that Printing@clinic will be an attractive service in the decades to come.

Abstract:Cardiovascular disease is still one of the leading causes of death in the world, and heart transplantation is the current major treatment for end-stage cardiovascular diseases. However, because of the shortage of heart donors, new sources of cardiac regenerative medicine are greatly needed. The prominent development of tissue engineering using bioactive materials has creatively laid a direct promising foundation. Whereas, how to precisely pattern a cardiac structure with complete biological function still requires technological breakthroughs. Recently, the emerging three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting technology for tissue engineering has shown great advantages in generating micro-scale cardiac tissues, which has established its impressive potential as a novel foundation for cardiovascular regeneration. Whether 3D bioprinted hearts can replace traditional heart transplantation as a novel strategy for treating cardiovascular diseases in the future is a frontier issue. In this review article, we emphasize the current knowledge and future perspectives regarding available bioinks, bioprinting strategies and the latest outcome progress in cardiac 3D bioprinting to move this promising medical approach towards potential clinical implementation.
