Abstract:Wound healing is a major secondary complication in type 2 diabetes, which results in significant disability and mortality, imposing a significant clinical and social burden. Sustained activation of the Nod-like receptor protein (NLRP) inflammasome in wounds is responsible for excessive inflammatory responses and aggravates wound damage. The activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome is regulated by a two-step process: the priming/licensing (signal 1) step involved in transcription and posttranslation and the protein complex assembly (signal 2) step triggered by danger molecules. This review focuses on the advances made in understanding the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying wound healing in the diabetic microenvironment. Simultaneously, this review summarizes the molecular mechanisms of the main regulatory pathways associated with signal 1 and signal 2, which trigger the NLRP3 inflammasome complex assembly in the development of diabetic wounds (DW). Activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome-related pathway, involving the disturbance in Nrf2 and the NF-κB/NLRP3 inflammasome, TLR receptor-mediated activation of the NF-κB/NLRP3 inflammasome, and various stimuli inducing NLRP3 inflammasome assembly play a pivotal role in DW healing. Furthermore, therapeutics targeting the NLRP3 inflammasome-related pathways may promote angiogenesis, reprogram immune cells, and improve DW healing.

Abstract:A diabetic wound exemplifies the challenge of chronic, nonhealing wounds. Elevated blood sugar levels in diabetes profoundly disrupt macrophage function, impairing crucial activities such as phagocytosis, immune response, cell migration, and blood vessel formation, all essential for effective wound healing. Moreover, the persistent presence of pro-inflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen species, coupled with a decrease in anti-inflammatory factors, exacerbates the delay in wound healing associated with diabetes. This review emphasizes the dysfunctional inflammatory responses underlying diabetic wounds and explores preclinical studies of inflammation-modulating bioactives and biomaterials that show promise in expediting diabetic wound healing. Additionally, this review provides an overview of selected clinical studies employing biomaterials and bioactive molecules, shedding light on the gap between extensive preclinical research and limited clinical studies in this field.

Abstract:Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is a foremost cause of amputation in diabetic patients. Consequences of DFU include infections, decline in limb function, hospitalization, amputation, and in severe cases, death. Immune cells including macrophages, regulatory T cells, fibroblasts and other damage repair cells work in sync for effective healing and in establishment of a healthy skin barrier post-injury. Immune dysregulation during the healing of wounds can result in wound chronicity. Hyperglycemic conditions in diabetic patients influence the pathophysiology of wounds by disrupting the immune system as well as promoting neuropathy and ischemic conditions, making them difficult to heal. Chronic wound microenvironment is characterized by increased expression of matrix metalloproteinases, reactive oxygen species as well as pro-inflammatory cytokines, resulting in persistent inflammation and delayed healing. Novel treatment modalities including growth factor therapies, nano formulations, microRNA based treatments and skin grafting approaches have significantly augmented treatment efficiency, demonstrating creditable efficacy in clinical practices. Advancements in local treatments as well as invasive methodologies, for instance formulated wound dressings, stem cell applications and immunomodulatory therapies have been successful in targeting the complex pathophysiology of chronic wounds. This review focuses on elucidating the intricacies of emerging physical and non-physical therapeutic interventions, delving into the realm of advanced wound care and comprehensively summarizing efficacy of evidence-based therapies for DFU currently available.

Abstract:Diabetic foot ulcers are one of the common secondary complications associated with diabetes and are characterized by delayed or absence of healing. Of the several factors contributing to poor healing, chronic low-grade inflammation significantly worsens wound healing resulting in adverse outcomes. As the innate immune system plays a vital role in wound healing, a closer look at their alterations may provide insights into developing novel treatment strategies to promote healing. In this review, we discuss the role of the innate immune system in driving chronic inflammation both at the wound site and at the systemic level, resulting in poor healing outcomes. Specifically, we highlight the findings from preclinical and clinical studies that describe the dysregulations of the innate system at the cellular and molecular level and how they contribute to low-grade chronic inflammation in wounds. Our review of the literature shows that preexisting low-grade inflammation, which is associated with altered myeloid cell phenotype and function, is key to impaired wound healing responses in individuals with diabetes. Hence, we suggest that modulating circulating myeloid cell function and low-grade chronic inflammation could be a helpful strategy in promoting diabetic foot ulcer healing.

Abstract:Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are one of the most costly and troublesome complications of diabetes mellitus. The wound chronicity of DFUs remains the main challenge in the current and future treatment of this condition. Persistent inflammation results in chronic wounds characterized by dysregulation of immune cells, such as M1 macrophages, and impairs the polarization of M2 macrophages and the subsequent healing process of DFUs. The interactive regulation of M1 and M2 macrophages during DFU healing is critical and seems manageable. This review details how cytokines and signalling pathways are co-ordinately regulated to control the functions of M1 and M2 macrophages in normal wound repair. DFUs are defective in the M1-to-M2 transition, which halts the whole wound-healing machinery. Many pre-clinical and clinical innovative approaches, including the application of topical insulin, CCL chemokines, micro RNAs, stem cells, stem-cell-derived exosomes, skin substitutes, antioxidants, and the most recent Phase III-approved ON101 topical cream, have been shown to modulate the activity of M1 and M2 macrophages in DFUs. ON101, the newest clinically approved product in this setting, is designed specifically to down-regulate M1 macrophages and further modulate the wound microenvironment to favour M2 emergence and expansion. Finally, the recent evolution of macrophage modulation therapies and techniques will improve the effectiveness of the treatment of diverse DFUs.

Abstract:Diabetes mellitus remains a global challenge to public health as it results in non‐healing chronic ulcers of the lower limb. These wounds are challenging to heal, and despite the different treatments available to improve healing, there is still a high rate of failure and relapse, often necessitating amputation. Chronic diabetic ulcers do not follow an orderly progression through the wound healing process and are associated with a persistent inflammatory state characterised by the accumulation of pro‐inflammatory macrophages, cytokines and proteases. Photobiomodulation has been successfully utilised in diabetic wound healing and involves illuminating wounds at specific wavelengths using predominantly light‐emitting diodes or lasers. Photobiomodulation induces wound healing through diminishing inflammation and oxidative stress, among others. Research into the application of photobiomodulation for wound healing is current and ongoing and has drawn the attention of many researchers in the healthcare sector. This review focuses on the inflammatory pathway in diabetic wound healing and the influence photobiomodulation has on this pathway using different wavelengths.

PPARα Agonist Stimulated Angiogenesis by Improving Endothelial Precursor Cell Function Via a NLRP3 Inflammasome Pathway

Abstract:Background: Impaired wound healing is a common complication of diabetes and is the leading cause of lower extremity amputation. Treatment with fenofibrate, a peroxisome proliferators–activated receptor α (PPARα) agonist, was associated with a lower risk of amputations, particularly minor amputations without known large-vessel diseases, probably through non-lipid mechanisms. The current study aimed to test our hypothesis that fenofibrate stimulates angiogenesis and restores endothelial precursor cell (EPC) function via inhibiting Nod-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3) inflammasome in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic mice. Methods: Male C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into three groups: control, STZ-induced diabetic mice and fenofibrate treated diabetic group. Wound closure was assessed by wound area and CD31 positive capillaries. Both the migration and tube formation capacities of EPCs were measured. Intracellular nitric oxide (NO) and superoxide (O2-) levels were determined. Activity of NLRP3 inflammasome in EPCs was assessed by measuring thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP), NLRP3, and caspase-1 expression. Results: Compared with the untreated diabetic mice, wound closure and capillary densities were significantly increased in fenofibrate treated group. Fenofibrate treatment restored EPC function, increased NO production, and decreased O2- level in EPCs of diabetic mice. Furthermore, fenofibrate deregulated the activity of NLRP3 inflammasome by reducing TXNIP, NLRP3 and caspase-1 expression in EPCs of diabetic mice. In vitro, fenofibrate prevented high glucose induced EPC dysfunction, deregulated NLRP3 inflammasome activity. In addition, fenofibrate inhibited IL-1β expression caused by combination use of high glucose and lipopolysaccharide. Conclusion: Fenofibrate can accelerate wound healing in diabetic mice, which at least in part was mediated by improving the impaired EPC function via a NLRP3 inflammasome pathway, suggesting the significance of PPARα agonists in the treatment of diabetes.
Targeting phenylpyruvate restrains excessive NLRP3 inflammasome activation and pathological inflammation in diabetic wound healing

Abstract:Moderate inflammation is essential for standard wound healing. In pathological conditions, such as diabetes, protracted and refractory wounds are associated with excessive inflammation, manifested by persistent proinflammatory macrophage states. However, the mechanisms are still unclear. Herein, we perform a metabolomic profile and find a significant phenylpyruvate accumulation in diabetic foot ulcers. Increased phenylpyruvate impairs wound healing and augments inflammatory responses, whereas reducing phenylpyruvate via dietary phenylalanine restriction relieves uncontrolled inflammation and benefits diabetic wounds. Mechanistically, phenylpyruvate is ingested into macrophages in a scavenger receptor CD36-dependent manner, binds to PPT1, and inhibits depalmitoylase activity, thus increasing palmitoylation of the NLRP3 protein. Increased NLRP3 palmitoylation is found to enhance NLRP3 protein stability, decrease lysosome degradation, and promote NLRP3 inflammasome activation and the release of inflammatory factors, such as interleukin (IL)-1β, finally triggering the proinflammatory macrophage phenotype. Our study suggests a potential strategy of targeting phenylpyruvate to prevent excessive inflammation in diabetic wounds.

Abstract:Diabetes affects an increasing number of patients, and is associated with sustained and chronic inflammation. Complications arising from diabetes, including hypoxia, neuropathy, hyperglycemia, and ischemia that contribute to a delayed and reduced healing response result in chronic slow healing wounds. Here, key differences in native versus diabetic wound healing during each phase of healing are discussed, and the roles of cells and their secreted cytokines which regulate this process are outlined. Monocyte chemoattractant protein‐1 (MCP‐1) is a pro‐inflammatory mediator which plays a key role in modulating angiogenesis. Its importance in diabetic wound healing as well as recent work using MCP‐1 and similar chemokines to reduce inflammation and improve healing are reviewed. The delayed healing response observed in diabetic patients often results in the formation of slow healing wounds, commonly presenting in the lower extremities as diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs); classification systems and current treatment options for DFUs, including debridement, off‐loading, and amputation are outlined. Common dressing strategies are highlighted, and recent work developing biocompatible and bioactive hydrogels to address and hasten chronic wound healing is focused on. Diabetic patients face an altered wound healing mechanism which results in the formation of chronic, slow healing wounds such as diabetic foot ulcers. Current and developing treatment options include debridement, off‐loading, and dressings such as hydrocolloids, film, alginates, and bioactive hydrogels. Hydrogels, in particular, are tunable, readily formulated, and easily delivered to combat associated infection, ischemia, scarring, and inflammation.

Reduced Bioactive Microbial Products (Pathogen-Associated Molecular Patterns) Contribute to Dysregulated Immune Responses and Impaired Healing in Infected Wounds in Mice with Diabetes

Abstract:Diabetic chronic ulcers are plagued with persistent nonresolving inflammation. However, diabetic wound environment early after injury suffers from inadequate inflammatory responses due to reductions in proinflammatory cytokines levels. Diabetic neutrophils have known impairments in bactericidal functions. We hypothesized that reduced bacterial killing by diabetic neutrophils, due to their bactericidal functional impairments, results in reduced bioactive bacterial products, known as pathogen-associated molecular patterns, which in turn contribute to reduced signaling through toll-like receptors, leading to inadequate production of proinflammatory cytokines in infected diabetic wound early after injury. We tested our hypothesis in db/db type 2 obese diabetic mouse wound infection model with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Our data indicate that despite substantially higher levels of infection, toll-like receptor 4-mediated signaling is reduced in diabetic wounds early after injury owing to reduced bioactive levels of lipopolysaccharide. We further demonstrate that topical treatment with lipopolysaccharide enhances toll-like receptor 4 signaling, increases proinflammatory cytokine production, restores leukocyte trafficking, reduces infection burden, and stimulates healing in diabetic wounds. We posit that lipopolysaccharide may be a viable therapeutic option for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcers if it is applied topically after the surgical debridement process, which is intended to reset chronic ulcers into acute fresh wounds.
Insulin promotes macrophage phenotype transition through PI3K/Akt and PPAR‐γ signaling during diabetic wound healing

Abstract:Overactivation and persistent chronic inflammation are the major pathogenic characteristics of diabetic-impaired healing, and diabetic wound healing can be promoted by stimulating the transition of macrophage phenotype from pro-inflammatory (M1) to anti-inflammatory (M2). Our previous studies found that the application of insulin induced an advanced initiation and resolution of inflammatory response. To further explore the mechanism, we have investigated the effect of insulin on macrophage phenotype switch utilizing a diabetic rat model and a human monocytic THP-1 cell. We have utilized the high glucose (HG) and HG plus insulin to stimulate the M1 macrophages derived from lipopolysaccharide-treated THP-1 cells. We studied the secretion of inflammatory mediator and related signaling pathways by using western blot test, immunofluorescence, and Rac1 pull-down assay. We have found that the production of pro-inflammatory mediators, which thereafter induced macrophage polarization toward M1 phenotype, has been elevated due to consistent HG exposure. HG plus insulin stimulation, on the other hand, promoted anti-inflammatory effects. Experiments performed on diabetic burn wounds indicated that the insulin modulated macrophages transition from M1 to M2 phenotype. We found that PI3K/Akt/Rac-1 and PPAR-γ signaling pathways are involved in the anti-inflammatory effect of insulin. Insulin inhibited HG-induced activation of p38, NF-κB, and STAT1 transcriptional activity by activating Akt-Rac-1 signaling. Moreover, insulin performs anti-inflammatory effects through upregulation of PPAR-γ expression and induced P38-mediated dephosphorylation of PPAR-γ (Ser112). In conclusion, insulin downregulates inflammatory response, regulates M1 macrophage transition in response to HG, and thus improves chronic wound healing.

Abstract:A growing body of evidence suggests that the interaction between immune and metabolic responses is essential for maintaining tissue and organ homeostasis. These interacting disorders contribute to the development of chronic diseases associated with immune-aging such as diabetes, obesity, atherosclerosis, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. In Diabetic wound (DW), innate immune cells respond to the Pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMAs) and/or Damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), changes from resting to an active phenotype, and play an important role in the triggering and maintenance of inflammation. Furthermore, the abnormal activation of innate immune pathways secondary to immune-aging also plays a key role in DW healing. Here, we review studies of innate immune cellular molecular events that identify metabolic disorders in the local microenvironment of DW and provide a historical perspective. At the same time, we describe some of the recent progress, such as TLR receptor-mediated intracellular signaling pathways that lead to the activation of NF-κB and the production of various pro-inflammatory mediators, NLRP3 inflammatory via pyroptosis, induction of IL-1β and IL-18, cGAS-STING responds to mitochondrial injury and endoplasmic reticulum stress, links sensing of metabolic stress to activation of pro-inflammatory cascades. Besides, JAK-STAT is also involved in DW healing by mediating the action of various innate immune effectors. Finally, we discuss the great potential of targeting these innate immune pathways and reprogramming innate immune cell phenotypes in DW therapy.

Abstract:Background: Impaired wound healing is the most common and significant complication of Diabetes. While most other complications of Diabetes have better treatment options, diabetic wounds remain a burden as they can cause pain and suffering in patients. Wound closure and repair are orchestrated by a sequence of events aided by the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines, which are dysregulated in cases of Diabetes, making the wound environment unfavorable for healing and delaying the wound healing processes. This concise review provides an overview of the dysregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and offers insights into better therapeutic outcomes. Purpose of review: Although many therapeutic approaches have been lined up nowadays to treat Diabetes, there are no proper treatment modalities proposed yet in treating diabetic wounds due to the lack of understanding about the role of inflammatory mediators, especially Pro-inflammatory mediators- Cytokines, in the process of Wound healing which we mainly focus on this review. Recent findings: Although complications of Diabetes mellitus are most reported after years of diagnosis, the most severe critical complication is impaired Wound Healing among Diabetes patients. Even though Trauma, Peripheral Artery Disease, and Peripheral Neuropathy are the leading triggering factors for the development of ulcerations, the most significant issue contributing to the development of complicated cutaneous wounds is wound healing impairment. It may even end up with amputation. Newer therapeutic approaches such as incorporating the additives in the present dressing materials, which include antimicrobial molecules and immunomodulatory cytokines is of better therapeutic value. Summary: The adoption of these technologies and the establishment of novel therapeutic interventions is difficult since there is a gap in terms of a complete understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms at the cellular and molecular level and the lack of data in terms of the assessment of safety and bioavailability differences in the individuals' patients. The target-specific pro-inflammatory cytokines-based therapies, either by upregulation or downregulation of them, will be helpful in the wound healing process and thereby enhances the Quality of life in patients, which is the goal of drug therapy.

Abstract:The NF-κB pathway plays a pivotal role in impeding the diabetic wound healing process, contributing to prolonged inflammation, diminished angiogenesis, and reduced proliferation. In contrast to modern synthetic therapies, naturally occurring phytoconstituents are well-studied inhibitors of the NF-κB pathway that are now attracting increased attention in the context of diabetic wound healing because of lower toxicity, better safety and efficacy, and cost-effectiveness. This study explores recent research on phytoconstituent-based therapies and delve into their action mechanisms targeting the NF-κB pathway and potential for assisting effective healing of diabetic wounds. For this purpose, we have carried out surveys of recent literature and analyzed studies from prominent databases such as Science Direct, Scopus, PubMed, Google Scholar, EMBASE, and Web of Science. The classification of phytoconstituents into various categorie such as: alkaloids, triterpenoids, phenolics, polyphenols, flavonoids, monoterpene glycosides, naphthoquinones and tocopherols. Noteworthy phytoconstituents, including Neferine, Plumbagin, Boswellic acid, Genistein, Luteolin, Kirenol, Rutin, Vicenin-2, Gamma-tocopherol, Icariin, Resveratrol, Mangiferin, Betulinic acid, Berberine, Syringic acid, Gallocatechin, Curcumin, Loureirin-A, Loureirin-B, Lupeol, Paeoniflorin, and Puerarin emerge from these studies as promising agents for diabetic wound healing through the inhibition of the NF-κB pathway. Extensive research on various phytoconstituents has revealed how they modulate signalling pathways, including NF-κB, studies that demonstrate the potential for development of therapeutic phytoconstituents to assist healing of chronic diabetic wounds.

However, the main trigger of NLRP3 inflammasome in the wounds is not known. Neutrophils, as sentinels of the innate immune system and key stimulators of MF, are immune cells that play the main role in the early phase of healing. Neutrophils release extracellular traps (NETs) as defense against pathogens. On the other hand, NETs induce tissue damage. NETs have been detected in the diabetic wound and implicated in the impaired healing process, but the mechanism of NETs suspend wound healing are elusive. Methods WB, immunofluorescence and immunocoprecipitation were used to detect the expression of NETs, NLRP3 inflammasome and IL-1b in diabetic foot ulcer wounds and the expression and activation of NLRP3 inflammsome after lowering the level of NETs. The role of NETs in activating macrophage inflammsome was verified and its mechanism was explored. Induced type I diabetic rats by STZ injection to detect the expression of NETs in the wound and observe the effects of exogenous DNase I on the expression of inflammasome and IL-1b in the wound, inflammatory cell infiltration and wound healing. Results NLRP3 and NETs are elevated in human and rat diabetic wounds. NETs overproduced in the diabetic wounds triggered NLRP3 inflammasome activation and IL-1b release. NETs up-regulated NLRP3 and pro-IL-1b levels via the TLR-4/TLR-9/NF-kB signalling pathway. NETs elicited ROS, which facilitated the association between NLRP3 and TXNIP, and activated the NLRP3 inflammasome. DNase I alleviated the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome, regulated the immune cell infiltration, and accelerated wound healing. Conclusions NETs contribute to the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome and sustained inflammatory response in the diabetic wound. NET digestion by DNase I alleviated the activation of NLRP3 inflammasome and accelerated wound healing. Applicability of Research to Practice

Abstract:Refractory wound is a severe complication that leads to limb amputation in diabetes, and is also a leading cause of hospitalizations in diabetic patients with limited treatment regimens. However, the underlying mechanisms remain to be fully elucidated. Various factors contribute to delayed diabetic wound healing, such as growth factor, nitric oxide (NO), reactive oxygen species (ROS), matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), microRNA, endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), etc. In this review, we will discuss the recent findings on the molecular mechanisms underlying impaired diabetic wound healing.

Abstract:Diabetic wound healing is a complex physiological process often hindered by the underlying metabolic dysfunctions associated with diabetes. Despite existing treatments, there remains a critical need to explore innovative therapeutic strategies to improve patient outcomes. This article comprehensively examines the roles of non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs), specifically microRNAs (miRNAs), long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), and circular RNAs (circRNAs), in regulating key phases of the wound healing process: inflammation, angiogenesis, re-epithelialization, and tissue remodeling. Through a deep review of current literature, we discuss recent discoveries of ncRNAs that have been shown to either promote or impair the wound healing process in diabetic wound healing, which were not covered in earlier reviews. This review highlights the specific mechanisms by which these ncRNAs impact cellular behaviors and pathways critical to each healing stage. Our findings indicate that understanding these recently identified ncRNAs provides new insights into their potential roles in diabetic wound healing, thereby contributing valuable knowledge for future research directions in this field.

Abstract:CERMINE is a comprehensive open source system for extracting structured metadata from scientific articles in a born-digital form. Among other information, CERMINE is able to extract authors and affiliations of a given publication, establish relations between them and present extracted metadata in a structured, machine-readable form. Affiliations extraction is based on a modular workflow and utilizes supervised machine learning as well as heuristic-based techniques. According to the evaluation we performed, the algorithm achieved good results both in affiliations extraction (84.3% F1) and affiliations parsing (92.1% accuracy) tasks. In this paper we outline the overall affiliations extraction work flow and provide details about individual steps' implementations. We also compare our approach to similar solutions, thoroughly describe the evaluation methodology and report its results. The CERMINE system, including the entire affiliations extraction and parsing functionality, is available under an open-source licence.

Abstract:Lower extremity ulceration is one of the serious and long-term diabetic complications rendering a significant social burden in terms of amputation and quality-of-life reduction. Diabetic patients experience a substantial wound-healing deficit. These lesions are featured by an exaggerated and prolonged inflammatory reaction with a significant impairment in local bacterial invasion control. Experimental and clinical evidences document the deleterious consequences of the wound's pro-inflammatory phenotype for the repair process. From a biochemical standpoint, hyperinflammation favours wound matrix degradation, thus, amplifying a pre-existing granulation tissue productive cells' invasiveness and recruitment deficit. Tumour necrosis factor perpetuates homing of inflammatory cells, triggers pro-apoptotic genes and impairs reepithelialisation. Advanced glycation end-products act in concert with inflammatory mediators and commit fibroblasts and vascular cells to apoptosis, contributing to granulation tissue demise. Therapeutic approaches aimed to downregulate hyperinflammation and/or attenuate glucolipotoxicity may assist in diabetic wound healing by dismantling downstream effectors. These medical interventions are demanded to reduce amputations in an expanding diabetic population.

Abstract:Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder resulting in an increased blood glucose level and prolonged hyperglycemia, causes long term health conse-quences. Chronic wound is frequently occurring in diabetes patients due to compromised wound healing capability. Management of wounds in diabetic patients remains a clinical challenge despite many advancements in the field of science and technology. Increasing evidence indicates that alteration of the biochemical milieu resulting from alteration in inflammatory cytokines and matrix metalloproteinase, decrease in fibroblast and keratinocyte functioning, neuropathy, altered leukocyte functioning, infection, etc. , plays a significant role in impaired wound healing in diabetic people. Apart from the current pharmacotherapy, different other approaches like the use of conventional drugs, antidiabetic medication, antibiotics, debridement, offloading, platelet-rich plasma, growth factor, oxygen therapy, negative pressure wound therapy, low-level laser, extracorporeal shock wave bioengineered substitute can be considered in the management of diabetic wounds. Drugs/therapeutic strategy that induce angiogenesis and collagen synthesis, inhibition of MMPs, reduction of oxidative stress, controlling hyperglycemia, increase growth factors, regulate inflammatory cytokines, cause NO induction, induce fibroblast and keratinocyte proliferation, control microbial infections are considered important in controlling diabetic wound. Further, medicinal plants and/or phytoconstituents also offer a viable alternative in the treatment of diabetic wound. The focus of the present review is to highlight the molecular and cellular mechanisms, and discuss the drug targets and treatment strategies involved in the diabetic wound.
