Abstract:Multi-active food packaging was prepared for strawberry fruit preservation where epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG)-containing pectin matrix and natamycin (NATA)-containing chitosan (CS) matrix were utilized to complete LBL electrostatic self-assembly. The results showed that the physicochemical properties of the multi -active packaging were closely related to the addition of NATA and EGCG. It was found that NATA and EGCG were embedded in the CS/pectin matrix through intermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions. The CN/PE 15 % multi-active films prepared based on the spectral stacking theory formed a barrier to UV light in the outer layer, exhibited excellent NATA protection under UV light exposure conditions at different times, and provided long-lasting and sustained bacterial inhibition in the inner layer. In addition, the CN/PE 15 % multi-active packaging extended the shelf life of strawberry at room temperature compared with the control samples. In conclusion, the developed CN/PE 15 % packaging provided potential applications for multi-active food packaging materials.
Posttraumatic stress disorder after a school shooting: effects of symptom threshold selection and diagnosis by DSM-III, DSM-III-R, or proposed DSM-IV.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of symptom threshold and criteria set selections on the diagnosis of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in adults and children exposed to a man-made disaster and determine how well DSM-III and its successors agree. METHOD Data gathered in the course of a voluntary clinical screening for PTSD in 66 adults and 64 children 6 to 14 months after exposure to a school shooting were analyzed according to DSM-III, DSM-III-R, and proposed DSM-IV criteria for PTSD diagnosis and cluster endorsement using liberal (occurring at least a little of the time), moderate (occurring at least some of the time), and conservative (occurring at least much or most of the time) symptom thresholds. RESULTS Within DSM-III, DSM-III-R, and proposed DSM-IV, selection of liberal, moderate, and conservative symptom thresholds had robust effects on rates of diagnoses; liberal thresholds allowed the greatest frequencies of diagnosis. Compared with DSM-III and proposed DSM-IV, DSM-III-R generally diagnosed the fewest cases. Agreements between DSM-III-R and proposed DSM-IV were good, while agreements between DSM-III and its successors varied for children and adults. CONCLUSIONS Diagnostic rates and agreements were complexly influenced by interactions among threshold and revisions in symptom clusters. The present study suggests that attempts to refine PTSD classification consider specification of symptom threshold intensity and supports the view that modification of criteria sets be undertaken with caution.
Triple synergistic sterilization of Prussian blue nanoparticle-doped chitosan/gelatin packaging film for enhanced food preservation

Abstract:To mitigate food spoilage caused by microbial contamination and extend the shelf life of food, antibacterial and eco-friendly biological packaging materials as an alternative to petroleum-based plastics is encouraged. Herein, an innovative and green composite film with triple antibacterial activity has been fabricated by introducing prussian blue nanoparticles (PBNPs) into chitosan (CS)-based films blended with gelatin (Gel) for the preservation of food, named CS/Gel/PB film. Due to the incorporation of PBNPs, CS/Gel/PB film exhibits enhanced mechanical, barrier and water resistance, and thermal abilities. The inherent bacterial trapping and killing capabilities of CS (contact killing), photothermal/photodynamic killing based on the excellent photothermal property of PBNPs under NIR irradiation synergistically facilitate the sterilization against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus (antibacterial ratio = 99.99 %). The film exhibits outstanding preservation capability in product storage, significantly extending the shelf life of strawberry and pork to 15 and 7 days, respectively. Meanwhile, the cytotoxicity assessment of CS/Gel/PB against HepG2 cells ascertains a cell viability exceeding 96 %, indicating a negligible toxicity level. Additionally, this film also exhibits superior biodegradability (preliminary degradation on the 10th day and completion on the 40th day) compared with PE film. Overall, these properties demonstrate great potential of CS/Gel/PB film as a novel packaging material.

Abstract:Polymers from Renewable Resources, Ahead of Print. Active packaging represents an innovative alternative to improve the quality of food and extend the shelf life of the product. The main aim of this research is to develop antibacterial films based on chitosan (Cs), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONps) to find a solution of food deterioration due to the presence of pathogenic microorganisms. ZnONps were synthesized by green chemistry using the leaves extract of Petroselinum crispum. The films were fabricated with 0; 0.5; and 1% w/v of ZnONps using different proportions of Cs: PVA by the casting method. The mechanical, physicochemical, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties were assessed. Moreover, the influence of the Cs/PVA/ZnONps films in the conservation of the Isabella grape was analyzed (pH, titratable acidity, weight loss, total soluble solids, and decay rate) and it was compared to commercial coating and uncoated grapes. Results showed the increase in the content of PVA improved the mechanical properties and increased the water absorption. Besides, Young's Module, and tensile strength of the films improved with ZnO nanoparticles addition. The antimicrobial activity of the nanocomposite films against Escherichia Coli was demonstrated. Finally, it was corroborated the nanocomposite films preserve the quality and extend the shelf life of Isabella grapes 6 days more than the commercial coating affirming their use in food packaging. To the best of our knowledge, no previous work related with the development of films based on Cs/PVA reinforced with ZnONPs has tested its application as fruits packaging, determining its effect on the ripening process through physic-chemical assays.

Abstract:This manuscript explores the incorporation of Pectin extracted from Vietnamese grapefruit peels and silver nanoparticles for the improvement of antibacterial and physical properties of Chitosan‐based film as an alternative packaging material. The morphological and structural characteristics of formed films including Chitosan, Chitosan/Pectin, and Chitosan/Pectin/AgNPs films are determined through field emission scanning electron microscopy dispersive X‐ray spectroscopy (FE‐SEM‐EDX) and attenuated total reflectance Fourier‐transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR‐FTIR). The mechanical properties of formed films are determined through tensile strength (TS), and elongation at break (EAB). The antibacterial effectiveness of the formed packaging films is assessed through their effectiveness against Gram‐negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) and Gram‐positive bacteria (Bacillus subtilis). Especially, the films' physical properties are determined through water contact angle (WCA), moisture content, water solubility, swelling degree (SD), the biodegradation capacity in the soil, and the actual green grape preservation ability of all formed films through the sensory state of the green grapes after 15 days of preservation. Our research concluded that preservative films made from Chitosan 1.75 wt %, Pectin 0.55 wt %, and AgNP 31 ppm have shown a 17.5‐fold reduction in swelling degree in water compared to Chitosan films. At the same time, the ability to retain moisture, and biodegradability in soil, especially, the antibacterial ability, have been enhanced. These findings herald a sustainable option for eco‐friendly food packaging, a critical step toward minimizing plastic waste and strengthening food preservation procedures through using Chitosan‐based antibacterial films enhanced with natural additives. This research incorporated grapefruit peel‐derived Pectin and Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) into the Chitosan‐based bio‐packaging film to improve its antibacterial efficacy and physical properties such as moisture content, swelling degree, and biodegradability in soil. Systematic investigations revealed that preservative films made from Chitosan 1.75 wt %, Pectin 0.55 wt %, and AgNP 31 ppm have shown a 17.5‐fold reduction in swelling degree in water compared to Chitosan films. At the same time, the anti‐gram‐positive and anti‐gram‐negative bacteria capacity, the ability to retain moisture, and biodegradability in soil, have been enhanced. Low swelling degrees provided better barrier performance, extending the shelf life of packaged products by preventing the ingress of oxygen, and water vapor; on the other hand, higher moisture content improved the flexibility and handling characteristics of packaging films, making them easier to manipulate during packaging processes. These findings herald a sustainable option for eco‐friendly food packaging, a critical step toward minimizing plastic waste and strengthening food preservation procedures using Chitosan‐based antibacterial films enhanced with natural additives.

Abstract:To address the environmental and food contamination issues caused by plastics and microorganisms, antimicrobial films using natural polymers has attracted enormous attention. In this work, we proposed a green, convenient and fast approach to prepare antimicrobial films from chitosan (CS), bacterial cellulose (BC) and ε-polylysine (ε-PL). The effects of different concentrations of ε-PL (0 %, 0.25 %, 0.5 %, 0.75 %, 1 %, w / v ) on the physicochemical properties and antibacterial activity of composite films (CS-DABC-x%PL) were systematically investigated. Furthermore, a comprehensive comparison with purely physically mixed CS-BC-x%PL films provides a deeper understanding of the subject matter. Characterization tests of the films were conducted using scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results suggested that the incorporation of 0.5 % ε-PL reduced the water solubility of the composite film by 19.82 %, along with improved the tensile strength and thermal stability by 37.31 % and 28.54 %. As ε-PL concentration increased to 1 %, the antibacterial performance of the films gradually enhanced. Additionally, the CS-DABC-0.5%PL film demonstrated effectiveness in delaying the deterioration of tilapia. These findings imply that this novel green packaging material holds significant potential in food preservation due to its promising antibacterial properties.

Abstract:This study includes development of chitosan-based films with incorporated essential thyme oil and different combinations of cross-linkers viz., ZnO, CaCl2, NC, and PEG for the safe storage of sweet cherries. The resulting films stored with sweet cherries were analyzed for different physicochemical and antimicrobial properties. Incorporation of ZnO, CaCl2, NC, and PEG in chitosan-based films maintained fruit quality by conserving higher total soluble solids, titratable acidity, and reduced weight loss. The combined ZnO + CaCl2 + NC + PEG in chitosan-based films also suppressed microbial activity. The sensorial quality of fruits stored with CH + ZnO + CaCl2 + NC + PEG treatment was also stable during storage. In conclusion, the combined CH + ZnO + CaCl2 + NC + PEG with added thyme oil application is an effective approach to maintain the postharvest quality and could be an alternative to increase the shelf life of sweet cherries, besides decreasing environmental impacts of non-biodegradable packages.

Abstract:In this study, nanocomposite films were produced by blending polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and chitosan (Cs) polymers with 70 % PVA and 30 % Cs, incorporating silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) via a solution-casting method. The research aims to investigate the impact of the biosynthesized Ag NPs by Chenopodium murale leaf extract on optical, morphological, mechanical, thermal, electrical, and antibacterial properties. XRD analysis showed a decrease in crystallinity degree with Ag NPs addition. TEM revealed Ag NPs in cubic and spherical shapes with an average size of 23.4 nm. SEM and AFM indicated surface morphology changes. FT-IR spectra showed interaction between Ag ions and the blend. The energy gap decreased with increasing Ag NPs concentration. TGA exhibited enhanced thermal stability. Mechanical properties improved significantly. AC electrical conductivity and dielectric parameters were studied. Antibacterial activity against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria was observed. Overall, PVA/Cs-Ag NPs films show promise for food packaging and optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Chitosan (CS) is a natural marine polysaccharide with good biocompatibility and biodegradability. But its poor water solubility and antibacterial activity limit its application in fruits preservation. In this study, based on the advantage of quaternary phosphonium salt (QP) and salicylic acid (SA) with good antibacterial activities and different antibacterial mechanisms, a novel antibacterial coating material was synthesized by grafting QP and SA onto CS. With the grafting of SA and QP onto CS, not only the crystallinity of CS molecules decreased and the water solubility improved, but also the antibacterial activity of CS-QP-SA against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , and Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (anthracnose) improved by the synergistic effect of QP and SA. After 20 days storage, the mango fruits treated by CS-QP-SA had a weight loss rate of 12.86 %, the fruit decay incidence was 52.00 ± 1.70 %. Hence, the CS-QP-SA films effectively extending the storage time of mango fruits to a certain extent. The results of this study indicated that CS-QP-SA might be a promising preservative for fruits and vegetables.

Abstract:The antiulcer, gastroprotective, and antisecretory effects of selected carbanilates were tested in rats. The compounds K-1905 and K-2002 were found to have beneficial effects similar to those of pentacaine in phenylbutazone- and ethanol-induced gastric injury and in cysteamine-induced duodenal lesions; their antisecretory activity was also comparable to pentacaine in pylorus-ligated rats. Compounds P2 and P3 were generally less effective than pentacaine, and compound P1 was gastrotoxic. Thus pentyloxy-substitution on the benzene ring of the parent structure (K-1905 and K-2002) is more suitable for antiulcer and gastroprotective activity than methoxy-substitution on the meta-position (P3) or alkyloxy-substitution on the para-position (P2, P1). The results indicate that the two carbanilates K-1905 and K-2002 can be considered prospective antiulcer drugs.

Abstract:One of the options for improving the structure and properties of films obtained from polymer solutions is ultrasonic exposure to solutions of various chemical nature. The use of this effect on polymer solutions with various additives and agents showed not only an improvement in physical and mechanical properties, but also antibacterial properties, which contributed to an increase in the shelf life of food products. The main components of the compositions whose studies are presented in scientific articles were: polyvinyl alcohol, proteins and pullulan, they were mixed with various additives and agents, with different duration of exposure to ultrasonic treatment of solutions. The studied compositions had the following compositions: polyvinyl alcohol and hemicellulose with an antioxidant agent of tea; polyvinyl alcohol, sodium-carboxymethyl cellulose, zinc oxide nanoparticles, as well as multilayer graphene nanoplates; polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan; fish scale collagen, polyvinyl alcohol and potassium sorbate; egg white; quinoa protein and chitosan; pea protein; rice protein hydrolysate and chitosan; whey protein hydrolysate; aqueous soy extract with bee wax and essential oil of cloves; oat protein with pullulan and nizin; pullulan with the addition of nanoemulsion with cinnamon essential oil; pullulan and trehalose with tea polyphenols saturation. Some of the films made from these formulations were tested on food products such as strawberries, apples, pears and cupcakes. Based on the considered scientific data, it can be concluded that in order to improve the properties of films from polymer solutions, it is necessary to have an optimal time of ultrasound exposure to solutions, since longer ultrasonic exposure can worsen the physical and mechanical properties, namely, to reduce the tensile strength and elongation at break, in contrast to moderate exposure.

Abstract:The use of nanotechnology has contributed to conquer the disadvantages of oil-loaded food packaging by altering their properties. In this study, chitosan (CS) composite films were fabricated using a novel nano-encapsulation system: ethanol extract of propolis (EEP)-phosphatidylcholine (PC)-tea seed oil (TSO) nano-microcapsules. X-ray diffraction results indicated that the nano-microcapsules were biocompatible with CS. Uniformly dispersed EEP-PC-TSO nano-microcapsules in CS improved the UV-blocking ability, thermal stability, structural densification, yellowing, and water vapor permeability of the composite films, the release of TSO occurs gradually and under controlled conditions. Compared with a simple mixture film of CS/PC/TSO/EEP, the CS film based on nano-microcapsules containing EEP-PC-TSO was more effective at reducing total bacterial count, thiobarbituric acid reactants (TBARS), and total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N) values, extending the shelf life of pork tenderloin. In summary, this CS composite film based on EEP-PC-TSO nano-microcapsules could be applied as a potential preservative film for food packaging.

Characterization and Antioxidant and Antibacterial Activities of Carboxymethylated Tamarind Seed Polysaccharide Composite Films Incorporated with ε-Polylysine and Their Application in Fresh-Cut Green Bell Pepper Preservation

Abstract:Traditional petroleum-based food-packaging materials have poor permeability, limited active packaging properties, and difficulty in biodegradation, limiting their application. We developed a carboxymethylated tamarind seed polysaccharide composite film incorporated with ε-polylysine (CTPε) for better application in fresh-cut agricultural products. The CTPε films exhibit excellent water vapor barrier properties, but the mechanical properties are slightly reduced. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction spectra indicate the formation of hydrogen bonds between ε-PL and CTP, leading to their internal reorganization and dense network structure. With the increase of ε-PL concentration, composite films showed notable inhibition of postharvest pathogenic fungi and bacteria, a significant enhancement of 2,2'- azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) radical-scavenging activity, and gradual improvement of wettability performance. Cytotoxicity experiments confirmed the favorable biocompatibility when ε-PL was added at 0.3% (CTPε2). In fresh-cut bell pepper preservation experiments, the CTPε2 coating effectively delayed weight loss and malondialdehyde increase preserved the hardness, color, and nutrients of fresh-cut peppers and prolonged the shelf life of the fresh-cut peppers, as compared with the control group. Therefore, CTPε composite films are expected to be a valuable packaging material for extending the shelf life of freshly cut agricultural products.

Abstract:Photodynamic inactivation (PDI) is a novel sterilization technology that has proven effective in medicine. This study focused on applying PDI to food packaging, where chitosan (CS) films containing photosensitizing riboflavin (RB) were prepared via solution casting. The CS-RB composite films exhibited good ultraviolet (UV)-barrier properties, and had a visually appealing highly transparent yellow appearance. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) confirmed even dispersion of RB throughout the CS film. The addition of RB led to improved film characteristics, including the thickness, mechanical properties, solubility, and water barrier properties. The CS-RB 5% composite films produced sufficient singlet oxygen under blue LED irradiation for 2 h to inactivate two food-borne pathogens (Listeria monocytogenes and Vibrio parahaemolyticus) and one spoilage bacteria (Shewanella baltica). The CS-RB composite films were assessed as a salmon packaging material, where inhibition of bacterial growth was observed. The film is biodegradable, and has the potential to alleviate the issues associated with the excessive use of petrochemical materials, such as environmental pollution and limited resources. The CS-RB composite films showed potential as a novel environmentally friendly packaging material for shelf-life extension of refrigerated food products.

Abstract:This study aimed to explore an innovative approach to enhancing the shelf-life and quality of meat products through the application of an active packaging system. The study involved the development of new free-standing carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) nanocomposite films incorporated with nanoencapsulated flavonoids derived from pomegranate extract. The loaded flavonoids, known for their antioxidant and antimicrobial properties, were nanoencapsulated via a self-assembly approach in a mixture of chitosan and sodium alginate to improve their stability, solubility, and controlled release characteristics. Chemical structure, size, and morphology of the obtained nanoparticles (Pg-NPs) were studied with FTIR, zeta-sizer, and TEM. The Pg-NPs showed particle size of 232 nm, and zeta-potential of -20.7 mV. Various free-standing nanocomposite films were then developed via incorporation of Pg-NPs into CMC-casted films. FTIR, SEM, thermal and mechanical properties, and surface wettability were intensively studied for the nanocomposite films. Barrier properties against water vapor were investigated at 2022 g·m-2d-1. The nanocomposite films possessed superior properties for inhibiting bacterial growth and extending the shelf-life of beef and poultry meat for 12 days compared with the Pg-NPs-free CMC films. This study presented a promising approach for development of active packaging systems with improved antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, and economic and environmental impacts.
Photodynamic antibacterial chitosan/nitrogen-doped carbon dots composite packaging film for food preservation applications

Abstract:In this study, we synthesized nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) with remarkable photodynamic antibacterial properties by a hydrothermal method. The composite film was prepared by solvent casting method, compounding N-CDs with chitosan (CS). The morphology and structure of the films were analyzed by Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), and transmission electron microscope (TEM) techniques. The films' mechanical, barrier, thermal stability, and antibacterial properties were analyzed. A preservation test of the films was studied on the samples of pork, volatile base nitrogen (TVB-N), total viable count (TVC), and pH were determined. Besides, the effect of film on the preservation of blueberries was observed. The study found that, compared with the CS film, the CS/N-CDs composite film is strong and flexible, with good UV light barrier performance. The prepared CS/7 % N-CDs composites showed high photodynamic antibacterial rates of 91.2 % and 99.9 % for E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. In the preservation of pork, it was found that its pH, TVB-N, and TVC indicators were significantly lower. The extent of mold contamination and anthocyanin loss was less in the CS/3 % N-CDs composite film-coated group, which could greatly extend the shelf life of food.

Abstract:The present paper reports a novel method to improve the properties of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) polymer foils suitable for applications in food packaging. It relates to the adsorption of chitosan-colloidal systems onto untreated and oxygen plasma-treated foil surfaces. It is hypothesized that the first coated layer of chitosan macromolecular solution enables excellent antibacterial properties, while the second (uppermost) layer contains a network of polyphenol resveratrol, embedded into chitosan nanoparticles, which enables antioxidant and antimicrobial properties simultaneously. X-ray photon spectroscopy (XPS) and infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed successful binding of both coatings onto foils as confirmed by gravimetric method. In addition, both attached layers (chitosan macromolecular solution and dispersion of chitosan nanoparticles with incorporated resveratrol) onto foils reduced oxygen permeability and wetting contact angle of foils; the latter indicates good anti-fog foil properties. Reduction of both oxygen permeability and wetting contact angle is more pronounced when foils are previously activated by O2 plasma. Moreover, oxygen plasma treatment improves stability and adhesion of chitosan structured adsorbates onto PP and PE foils. Foils also exhibit over 90% reduction of Staphylococcus aureus and over 77% reduction of Escherichia coli as compared to untreated foils and increase antioxidant activity for over a factor of 10. The present method may be useful in different packaging applications such as food (meat, vegetables, dairy, and bakery products) and pharmaceutical packaging, where such properties of foils are desired.

Abstract:ε‐polylysine and chitosan functionalized hydrophobic pulp board is demonstrated as an antimicrobial food storage container. Chitosan functionalization solves the intrinsic hydrophilic properties of ε‐polylysine and prevents the bacterial growth for 15 days. As a proof‐of‐concept study, lunch boxes made of our antimicrobial pulp boards keep the strawberries fresh for at least 5 days. The production of paper‐based food packaging materials is of vital importance as the release of microplastics into aqueous environment and food chain has aroused significant public concern. In this study, antibacterial pulp board was demonstrated by co‐spraying chitosan (CS) and ε‐polylysine (ε‐PL) on wet sheet and dried to form fibrous pulp board (ε‐PL‐CS). ε‐PL functionalization showed great antibacterial performance while its hydrophilicity limited its further application for food packaging. Interestingly, ε‐PL‐CS pulp board not only demonstrated excellent antibacterial performance (99.99% against both bacteria Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli), but also maintained high hydrophobicity (ca. 135°) and water resistance due to the positive charge of ε‐PL and CS as well as penetration of CS into pulp board. In addition, CS functionalization significantly improved the mechanical strength of the pulp board by around 100% (20 MPa). More importantly, the ε‐PL‐CS pulp board could successfully prevent bacteria growth within 15 days at room temperature due to their high hydrophobicity and smooth surface, indicating the long‐term stability as packaging materials. Satisfactory strawberry storage stability of ε‐PL‐CS cardboard lunch box provided great application promise for the development of antimicrobial packaging materials.

Abstract:The development of sustainable and functional packaging materials has become a very promising way to reduce pollution from traditional plastics. To address the shortcomings of natural materials with single function, poor antimicrobial and mechanical properties, and to develop more competitive green food packaging, a sodium carboxymethyl cellulose based multifunctional packaging film interspersed with wheat straw cellulose fibers (CF) and cellulose nanofibers (CNF) was proposed in this study, where CF and CNF increased the surface area of the film and loading capacity of the functional materials at the micrometer and nanometer levels, respectively. A biodegradable supramolecular polymer, polydiacetylene (PDA), was introduced into the film. Then, ZnO nanoparticles and PDA carboxylate head group coordination self-assembly strategy was utilized to build a PDA/Zn 2+ intercalation composite structure, which was able to produce a highly sensitive specific response to biogenic amine and endowed the film with the ability of visual indication, as well as to effectively improve the film's antimicrobial, ultraviolet light shielding, gas barrier, and water resistance properties. Moreover, the dense structure enables the film to withstand more than 50 reciprocal folds of nearly 180°, far exceeding that of ordinary packaging paper (about 10 folds). Composite packaging film enabled effective quality retention and spoilage monitoring of high protein products, especially shrimp with high biogenic amine release. This study provides a valuable reference for the application of supramolecular polymers, such as PDA, in food packaging materials, and gives a diversified development idea for plastic alternative packaging and multifunctional food packaging.
