Abstract:Tetracycline（TC） as a typical emerging pollutant is becoming a serious threat to the environment and human health. A combined advanced oxidation technology of UV/Ozone（O 3 ）/peroxydisulfate（PDS） process was developed to explore an efficient and economic treatment process of TC in wastewater. Furthermore,the reactive sites and transformation pathways of TC were explored and the toxicity of the intermediates was quantified with a quantitative structure-activity relationship（QSAR） assessment. The degradation performance of TC was substantially enhanced in UV/O 3 /PDS process with a k obs of 0.0949 min -1 ,which was 2.3 times higher than UV/O 3 and 3.2 times than sole UV. The results demonstrated that there was a superior synergistic effect of PDS on UV/O 3 processes for the degradation of TC. Electron paramagnetic resonance（EPR） analysis and quenching experiments show that · OH, SO 4 ·- , O 2 ·- and 1 O 2 all contributed to TC degradation in the UV/O 3 /PDS process and exhibited a synergistic effect, which inhibited the generation of harmful products. In addition, the UV/O 3 /PDS system can effectively degrade TC in a wide range of substrate concentrations and pH, and also showed excellent adaptability to various concentrations of anions（Cl-and HCO 3 - ）. This study proves the feasibility of UV/O 3 /PDS process for treating TC contaminated wastewater with complicated water matrix.
High Efficiency Removal Performance of Tetracycline by Magnetic CoFe2O4/NaBiO3 Photocatalytic Synergistic Persulfate Technology

Abstract:The widespread environmental contamination resulting from the misuse of tetracycline antibiotics (TCs) has garnered significant attention and study by scholars. Photocatalytic technology is one of the environmentally friendly advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) that can effectively solve the problem of residue of TCs in the water environment. This study involved the synthesis of the heterogeneous magnetic photocatalytic material of CoFe2O4/NaBiO3 via the solvothermal method, and it was characterized using different characterization techniques. Then, the photocatalytic system under visible light (Vis) was coupled with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to explore the performance and mechanism of degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) in the wastewater. The characterization results revealed that CoFe2O4/NaBiO3 effectively alleviated the agglomeration phenomenon of CoFe2O4 particles, increased the specific surface area, effectively narrowed the band gap, expanded the visible light absorption spectrum, and inhibited recombination of photogenerated electron–hole pairs. In the Vis+CoFe2O4/NaBiO3+PMS system, CoFe2O4/NaBiO3 effectively activated PMS to produce hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and sulfate radicals (SO4−). Under the conditions of a TCH concentration of 10 mg/L−1, a catalyst concentration of 1 g/L−1 and a PMS concentration of 100 mg/L−1, the degradation efficiency of TCH reached 94% after 100 min illumination. The degradation of TCH was enhanced with the increase in the CoFe2O4/NaBiO3 and PMS dosage. The solution pH and organic matter had a significant impact on TCH degradation. Notably, the TCH degradation efficiency decreased inversely with increasing values of these parameters. The quenching experiments indicated that the free radicals contributing to the Vis+CoFe2O4/NaBiO3+PMS system were ·OH followed by SO4−, hole (h+), and the superoxide radical (O2−). The main mechanism of PMS was based on the cycle of Co3+ and Co2+, as well as Fe3+ and Fe2+. The cyclic tests and characterization by XRD and FT-IR revealed that CoFe2O4/NaBiO3 had good degradation stability. The experimental findings can serve as a reference for the complete removal of antibiotics from wastewater.

Degradation of tetracycline by activated peroxodisulfate using a sulfur-modified iron-based material

Abstract:The activation of persulfate by an iron-based catalyst presents a promising approach for the degradation of antibiotics; however, the activation efficiency remains a challenge. Herein, a sulfur-modified iron-based catalyst (S-Fe) by co-precipitation of sodium thiosulfate and ferrous sulfate in a molar ratio of 1:2 was prepared and the efficacy of the S-Fe/PDS system for the removal of tetracycline (TCH) was studied, where a higher removal efficiency was observed compared to the Fe/PDS system. Moreover, the effects of TCH concentration, PDS concentration, initial pH, and catalyst dosage on TCH removal were evaluated, and the highest efficiency was about 92.6% within a 30 min reaction time using a catalyst dosage of 1.0 g/L, a PDS dosage of 2.0 g/L, and a solution pH value of 7. The products and degradation pathways of TCH were analyzed by LC-MS. The free-radical-quenching experiments revealed that both SO4- • and •OH radicals contributed to the degradation of TCH in the S-Fe/PDS system, with the former playing a more significant role. The S-Fe catalyst also showed good stability and reusability for the removal of organic pollutants. Our findings suggest that the modification of an iron-based catalyst offers an effective approach to activate persulfate for removal of tetracycline antibiotics.

In addition, the TCH removal rate remained >85 % after three cycles, thereby verifying the stability and reusability of the 4%PdO/CFO/CK composite. Finally, free radical capture experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance identified the reactive oxygen species involved in the degradation process as 1 O 2 , • O 2 − , h + , • OH, and SO 4 •− , and we proposed a mechanism for TCH removal using the 4%PdO/CFO/CK + PMS + Vis system. Our findings provide a promising solution for removing TCH from wastewater using the 4%PdO/CFO/CK + PMS + Vis system.

Abstract:The cost-effective removal of antibiotic contaminants from the aqueous environment has become a hot research topic now. In this study, we proposed a novel coupled system, i.e., nano-Fe 3 O 4 (nFe 3 O 4 ) mediated persulfate (PDS) activation and biodegradation process, for efficient removal of tetracycline (TCH). The feasibility of the coupled system (nFe 3 O 4 + PDS + microbe) was proved by comparing it with a single AOP (nFe 3 O 4 + PDS) in batch and column experiments. The highest removal efficiencies of TCH (20 mg/L) and TOC reached 99.5 % and 43.2 % by the coupled system within 60 days. SEM spectra exhibited that nFe 3 O 4 and microorganisms were well loaded on the non-woven fabric. Meanwhile, XPS results proved that more Fe(II) was on the surface of nFe 3 O 4 in the coupled system than that in the single AOP. The presence of abundant Fe(II) in the coupled system suggested the potential electron transfer from Fe(III) with the assistance of microbes. High-throughput sequencing results indicated Proteobacteria played an important role in the coupled system. The degradation intermediates of TCH were analyzed by ultraperformance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer (UPLC-MS), and reasonable degradation pathways were proposed. The coupling of nFe 3 O 4 + PDS and biological treatment improved the TCH removal efficiency and reduced the burden of subsequent water treatment, which provided a feasible idea for the treatment of antibiotic-containing wastewater.

Abstract:For reducing the amount and fully utilizing active sites of CuO, microscale CuO coated melamine-cyanuric acid supramolecular assembly (CuO/MCSA) was developed in situ and empolyed as efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for water decontamination. The characteristics of CuO/MCSA were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, XPS, SEM, TEM and BET. CuO/MCSA showed strong catalytic ability to activate PMS for tetracycline (TC) degradation. Under the condition of pH≈7 and PMS dosage of 0.5 mmol /L, 1 g/L CuO/MCSA including less than 3.0 wt% CuO can remove about 70% of 20 mg/L TC within 5 min. And after five consecutive cycles, the degradation rate of CuO/MCSA was still around 52.6%. PMS dosage, reaction temperature and initial pH value, co-existing anions and small molecule acids all affected the performance of CuO/MCSA/PMS system on TC degradation. According to the quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) test, 1O2 played the most important role in TC degradation in CuO/MCSA/PMS system. In addition, CuO/CSA/PMS system exhibited wide applicability, which can effectively remove TC in different water bodies (deionized water, tap water and lake water) and various pollutants (TC, methylene orange and methyl blue). Overall, this work provided an effective strategy to enhance the efficient utilization of catalyst for PMS activation.

Abstract:The feasibility of UV-activated peroxymonosulfate (PMS) technology for the degradation of Tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP) in an aqueous solution was investigated in this study. The conditions of [PMS](0): [TCEP](0) = 20:1, T = 25 +/- 2 degrees C and pH = 5.5 +/- 0.5 cause a 94.6% removal of TCEP (1 mg L-1) after 30 min of Hg lamp irradiation. The effects of operating parameters (the oxidant doses, pH and presence of typical cations (Fe3+, Cu2+, Ni2+, NH4+), anions (Cl-, HCO3-, NO3-, HPO42-) and humic acid (HA)) were evaluated. It was found that an increase of the PMS dose and the presence of Fe3+ could accelerate the reaction, while the anions and HA inhibited the reaction. Meanwhile, TCEP removal in various water matrices was compared, and the order for TCEP removal was as follows: ultrapure water > tap water > synthetic water > secondary clarifier effluent > Jiuxiang river water. Twenty-two oxidation products were identified using an electrospray time-of-flight mass spectrometer, and the degradation pathways mainly involved radicals' addition and C-O bond cleavage. Furthermore, ECOSAR analysis revealed that the intermediate products during the TCEP oxidation process were generally not harmful to three typical aquatic species. Hence, UV/PMS can be used as an efficient technology to treat TCEP-containing water and wastewaters. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Investigation into the Synergistic Effect of the Zinc Peroxide/Peroxymonosulfate Double-Oxidation System for the Efficient Degradation of Tetracycline

Abstract:The increasingly severe antibiotic pollution has become one of the most critical issues. In this study, a zinc peroxide/peroxymonosulfate (ZnO2/PMS) double-oxidation system was developed for tetracycline (TC) degradation. A small amount of ZnO2 (10 mg) and PMS (30 mg) could effectively degrade 82.8% of TC (100 mL, 50 mg/L), and the degradation process could be well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Meanwhile, the ZnO2/PMS double-oxidation system showed high adaptability in terms of reaction temperature (2–40 °C), initial pH value (4–12), common inorganic anions (Cl−, NO3−, SO42− and HCO3−), natural water source and organic pollutant type. The quenching experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) characterization results confirmed that the main reactive oxygen species (ROS) was singlet oxygen (1O2). Moreover, three possible pathways of TC degradation were deduced according to the analyses of intermediates. On the basis of comparative characterization and experiment results, a synergistic activation mechanism was further proposed for the ZnO2/PMS double-oxidation system, accounting for the superior degradation performance. The released OH− and H2O2 from ZnO2 could activate PMS to produce major 1O2 and minor superoxide radicals (•O2−), respectively.

Abstract:Tetracyclines (TCs), including tetracycline (TTC), oxytetracycline (OTC), and chlorotetracycline (CTC), are frequently detected in natural waters, soils, and sediments, which raised great concerns about the proliferation of antibiotic resistant genes. This study investigated the degradation of TCs by sulfate radical produced by thermo-activated persulfate in aqueous solution. Increasing the temperature significantly enhanced the degradation of TTC, and the relationship between pseudo-first-order rate constant (k obs) and temperature obeyed Arrhenius equation. The degradation of TTC showed pH dependence, and k obs increased markedly with increasing pH. Seven intermediate products of TTC were temporarily identified by solid phase extraction and liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (SPE–LC–MS/MS). The transformation pathways of TTC included N-demethylation, hydroxylation–oxidation and dehydration. Detailed mechanisms for sulfate radical-induced N-demethylation and hydroxylation–oxidation were proposed. The degradation of the three TCs followed the order of OTC>CTC>TTC, highlighting the structure-specific reactivity. Interestingly, TTC was degraded extremely fast in artificial surface water (ASW), implying sulfate radical-based oxidation of TCs may be efficient in environmentally relevant conditions. The antimicrobial potency and ecotoxicological effects of the degradation products warrant further studies.

Abstract:This study established an efficient coupled activation persulfate (PMS) process with a bimetallic modified biochar (MBC)-loaded cathode (MBC@CF) as the main body to remove tetracycline (TC) by electric field-enhanced catalytic cathodic activation of PMS (E-MBC@CF-PMS). The synergistic effect of electrocatalytic co-activation in the E-MBC@CF-PMS system (5.54) was two to three times higher than the electrically activated (2.39) / electro-catalytic (2.03) systems. The fundamental reason is that the presence of electric field enhances the efficient activation of PMS at sites like C = O and Metal-N-C (M−N−C) on the catalytic cathode surface and makes it easier for the vital element M n+ in the ligand structure to regenerate. 1 O 2 generated during electrocatalytic co-activation and electron transfer was demonstrated to dominate in the efficient removal of pollutants using free radical quenching and electron spin resonance. This study offers a fresh idea to encourage the effective and practical activation of PMS.

Abstract:Tetracycline antibiotics are a common type of antibiotics in life. In this research, Fe 2+ and Cu 2+ was used to modify granular activated carbon, and peroxydisulfate was activated under the synergistic action of electrochemistry (EC/Fe-Cu-GAC/PS). The effects of the initial concentration of tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH), initial pH, current density, and plate spacing on the degradation of TCH were investigated. Experimental results indicated that the removal efficiency of TCH was 87.27% by the EC/Fe-Cu-GAC/PS system. The removal rate of TCH decreased with the increase of initial concentration of TCH. The TCH removal rate is maintained at a high level when pH values range from 3 to 7. Increasing the amount of catalyst and persulfate in a certain range, as well as the magnitude of current density and plate spacing are helpful for TCH removal. When the initial TCH concentration is 20 mg/L, the initial pH value is 5.0, the amount of Fe-Cu-GAC is 2.0 g, the PS concentration is 2 mmol/L, the electrolyte concentration is 25 mmol/L, the current density is 15 mA/cm 2 , and the plate spacing is 9 cm, the TCH removal effect is the most effective. The free-radical experiment showed that sulfate radicals (SO 4 •− ) played a dominant role under acidic conditions. According to the data analysis, the kinetic model of the EC/Fe-Cu-GAC/PS system was consistent with the first-order reaction kinetics. According to the reaction dynamics, we get the rating of influencing factors that influence the effect of TCH removal. The EC/Fe-Cu-GAC/PS system can effectively degrade tetracycline antibiotics in water.

Abstract:At present, tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) is a widely used antibiotic, and is often detected in water, posing a serious harm to human and ecological health. In this study, spent bleaching earth (SBE) was pyrolyzed to obtain spent bleaching earth carbon (SBE@C) and the nano Fe0/SBE@C prepared after zero-valent iron loading was adopted to remove TCH in water for the first time. The combination of nano Fe0/SBE@C and PS, the strong adsorption of SBE@C coupled with the oxidation of free radicals could achieve TCH efficient removal. The effects of nano Fe0 load, nano Fe0/SBE@C dosage, solution initial pH, and PS/TCH molar ratio on TCH removal efficiency in nano Fe0/SBE@C + PS system were studied. The results indicate that the optimal reaction conditions are 5% nano Fe0 load, 0.2 g/L nano Fe0/SBE@C dosage, initial pH of 3, PS/TCH molar ratio of 100:1. Under these conditions, TCH removal efficiency could reach 91%. Meanwhile, response surface methodology (RSM) was applied to predict optimal value of reaction conditions. The removal efficiency corresponding to the predicted optimal conditions was consistent with the actual removal efficiency obtained from the experiment. Moreover, six reaction systems were tested, and TCH removal efficiency in the SBE@C + PS system was 22.6%. When nano Fe0 was loaded on SBE@C, TCH removal efficiency in Fe0/SBE@C + PS system increased to 78.2%, in which TCH was first adsorbed on the surface of nano Fe0/SBE@C, and then was degraded by the oxidation of SO4•− and •OH. Totally, the nano Fe0/SBE@C + PS system displayed excellent TCH removal efficiency, good stability and reusability, exhibiting a promise toward TCH removal.

Abstract:Tetracycline (TC) is a widely used antibiotic that adversely affects ecosystems and, therefore, must be removed from the environment. Owing to their strong ability to oxidise pollutants, including antibiotics, and selectivity for these pollutants, an improved oxidation method based on sulphate radicals (SO4· − ) has gained considerable interest. In this study, a novel technique for removing TC was developed by activating peroxymonosulphate (PMS) using a ZnFe 2 O 4 catalyst. Using the co-precipitation method, a ZnFe 2 O 4 catalyst was prepared by doping zinc into iron-based materials, which increased the redox cycle, while PMS was active and facilitated the production of free radicals. According to electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy results, a ZnFe 2 O 4 catalyst may activate PMS and generate SO 4 · − , HO·, O 2 · − , and 1 O 2 to eliminate TC. This research offers a new method for creating highly effective heterogeneous catalysts that can activate PMS and destroy antibiotics. The study proposes the following degradation pathways: hydroxylation and ring-opening of TC based on the products identified using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. These results illustrated that the prepared ZnFe 2 O 4 catalyst effectively removed TC and exhibited excellent catalytic performance.

Abstract:A novel composite (nZVI/HNTs) was prepared via incorporating nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) on halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) for degrading tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) with existence of persulfate (PS). The adsorption process of nZVI/HNTs to TCH conformed to the Freundlich isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and its maximum adsorption capacity was 76.62 mg·g −1 . Furthermore, the nZVI/HNTs + PS system exhibited satisfactory degradation efficiency (84.21%) for TCH, and stable nZVI/HNTs (Fe leaching < 0.001 mg·L −1 ) could be reused. When nZVI/HNTs dosage, PS dosage and temperature increased, TCH degradation could be enhanced. After four cycling, nZVI/HNTs + PS system had still 65.8% degradation for TCH. The quenching tests and EPR analysis evidenced that SO 4 •− was predominant instead of •OH in such system. Three possible pathways of TCH degradation were provided through the liquid chromatograph-mass spectrometer (LC–MS) determination. Meanwhile, the biological toxicity prediction analysis indicated that the nZVI/HNTs + PS system would be an environment friendly treatment method toward TCH pollution.

Abstract:The removal of pollutants by peracetic acid (PAA) has attracted much attention. However, such removal is not achievable solely by PAA without activation. This paper investigated the efficiency and mechanism of ultrasound-activated peracetic acid (US/PAA) to remove tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH). The results indicated that US/PAA process could successfully remove organic contaminants from water, and the degradation efficiency of TCH could reach 99.4% within 30 min. Adding ultrasonic radiation into the PAA solution could effectively activate PAA, and the US/PAA process increased the degradation efficiency of TCH by 4.88 times compared to the PAA process. The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiment and the radical quenching experiment both demonstrated that singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) and organic radicals (RO·) played an important role in the degradation of TCH during US/PAA process. The effects of the PAA dose, pH, ultrasound power, and initial TCH concentration on the removal of TCH in US/PAA process were investigated. The pH was the main factor, and the highest degradation efficiency was reached at a neutral pH (6.5–8.0). Additionally, the influence of water components (Cl − , HCO 3 − , SO 4 2− , and humic acid) on the removal of TCH by US/PAA process was studied. The results showed that all water components inhibited the elimination of TCH, except 5 mmol/L HCO 3 − . Finally, the possible degradation products of TCH were identified by high performance liquid chromatography triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (HPLC-MS) analysis, and the potential degradation pathways mainly involved hydroxylation, demethylation, dehydration, and ring cleavage reaction.

Abstract:In this work, a novel highly dispersed PdO/g-C 3 N 4 /kaolinite (P/CNK) composite was synthesized to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) under visible light for tetracycline hydrochloride (TCH) degradation. The 4 %P/CNK catalyst showed the best catalytic ability for TCH degradation within 20 min (94.5 %) over the vis/PMS system. The favorable specific surface area and pore volume of CNK allowed for the high dispersion of PdO and the adsorption of PMS, while PdO anchoring on CNK endowed the catalyst with channels and acceptors that could accommodate a large number of electrons to achieve rapid transfer between electrons. Furthermore, kaolinite is inexpensive, and the plentiful hydroxyl groups on the kaolinite surface can accelerate the self-decomposition of PMS. The 4 %P/CNK system also showed excellent degradation efficiency under different pH conditions and maintained its catalytic activity (87.1 %) after five cycles. The intermediates produced during the degradation of TCH and the corresponding differences in aquatic toxicity were identified. The results of electron paramagnetic resonance and reactive oxygen species quenching experiments showed that 1 O 2 was the key reaction species, while O 2 − and h + were secondary species during the degradation process. In addition to TCH, 4 %P/CNK also had good degradation and mineralization effects on sulfamethoxazole, chlortetracycline, and carbamazepine. This work provides a deep foresight into the efficient degradation of antibiotic pollutants by kaolinite-based catalytic materials in a photocatalytic coupled PMS system.

Abstract:Tetracycline (TC), a commonly used antibiotic in wastewater, poses environmental and health risks, thus demanding advanced catalysts for its effective removal. In this work, for the first time, we integrated cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) and MXene quantum dots (MQDs) to form magnetic heterojunctions for rapid degradation of TC in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). Anchoring MQDs on the CoFe2O4 nanoparticles remarkably promoted the overall degradation rate of TC to 98.2% within 20 min via both radical and non-radical pathways. The first-order kinetic constant was 0.170 min-1, 3.5 and 15.5 times higher than that of CoFe2O4 and MQDs alone, respectively. Quenching experiments revealed that the addition of p-benzoquinone (p-BQ) and furfuryl alcohol (FFA) reduced the degradation of TC within 20 min to 56.2% and 28.4%, respectively, indicating that the primary reactive oxygen species for TC degradation in the CoFe2O4/MQDs + PMS system are •O2- and 1O2. CoFe2O4/MQDs also exhibited superparamagnetic property, which enabled their effective recovery by external magnetic field. Their reusability was verified by retaining 81.4% of catalytic efficacy in the consecutive 8th cycle. The CoFe2O4/MQDs + PMS system also exhibited excellent practicability in natural water samples as the degradation rates in both tap water and lake water environments exceeded 90%. Three potential pathways for TC degradation were proposed based on the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) characterizations and TC progressively transformed into 13 intermediates. This work may contribute to the ongoing efforts to develop advanced catalysts and strategies for mitigating the environmental impact of antibiotic pollution, offering a pathway toward sustainable and efficient water treatment technologies.

Abstract:Coupled advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) based on ultrasound and transition metal-activated persulfate (PS) have attracted considerable attention for the degradation of antibiotics. NiFe2O4@CuO composites with core–shell structure were prepared by hydrothermal-freeze-drying-synchronous pyrolysis and coupled with ultrasound to degrade oxytetracycline (OTC) via activated PS. The coupled oxidation process (15-NFO@CuO/US/PS) can substantially enhance the degradation rate of OTC due to the synergistic effects from both ultrasonic and metal activation. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy reflects that the synergistic interaction between the metals on the 15-NFO@CuO surface can effectively enhance the redox cycling process of metal ions and promote PS activation. Free radical quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy (EPR) identified and confirmed the presence of sulfate radicals (SO4 •−), hydroxyl radicals (•OH), and superoxide radicals (O2 •−). In addition, the degradation pathways and intermediates of OTC were proposed based on liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix (3D-EEM) analysis.
